Ibiza's number one and original hippy market, it has refused to move with the times. The stands are piled high with authentic and retro items, everything from kaleidoscope kaftans to beads and bangles. Silke, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The market is full of creative artisans and artistes, not just selling their wares but performing music. It's an eclectic and electric experience for all the family.'A wide variety of products are on offer, from handstitched leather bags and a huge range of jewellery right through to homewares such as hand-woven baskets and art prints. Clothing is also highly sought-after, and there's no shortage of cool, beach-ready apparel. Prices are reasonable for such unique and often handcrafted items. Silke adds, ‘In 1973, the hotel invited hippy artisans to sell their wares to guests. Today, there are more than 450 stalls. You'll find stands selling white dresses and shirts – the typical Adlib Ibiza style, which was created during the hippy movement and is still very popular.'If you fancy just sitting back to soak up the atmosphere, there's food and drink for all tastes in the foodie areas. There are even activities for the kids and a playground for your little ones. Even if you're eyeing not buying, the psychedelic time travel is worth the visit alone.

Ibiza Island Tour with Can Marca Caves, Las Salinas and Portinatx

This tour shines the spotlight on all four corners of the island. Calling by Las Salinas, Portinatx and San Miguel, you'll also stop by the party town of San Antonio or upscale Santa Eulalia. Lucia, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Ibiza once relied on salt production, and while the salt pans are still in use, they are now protected as part of a much larger nature reserve in order to safeguard the wildlife – in particular the many species of birds that use the area as a staging post as they migrate from Africa to Europe. Look out for the distinctive pink flamingos wading through the ponds.'In the morning, you'll pass by the snowy-white salt flats of Las Salinas. A huge patchwork of wetlands, it was the isle's chief earner for over 2,000 years. In the cutesy village of San Jose, you can grab a coffee in the town square or visit the attention-grabbing 18th century fortress church. The village retains a traditional Ibizan vibe, and enjoys a scenic location on the foothills of Sa Talaia, Ibiza's tallest mountain, which reaches 475 metres.After a short photo stop in San Antonio or Santa Eulalia – depending on your departure point – you'll have some free time to potter around the pretty coastal resort of Portinatx and choose from one of the local restaurants for a typical lunch. After time exploring the old town, you'll head to the renowned Las Dalias Hippy Market. Martina, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Back in 1985 the market started with just five stalls. Fast forward to 2023, its 38th year, and though it has expanded to 250 stalls, it retains its distinct hippie charm more than ever.'First up, stroll around Dalt Vila, enclosed by monumental defensive walls with seven bastions, each offering a unique viewpoint of the city and the sea. Located at the highest point of Dalt Vila, the 13th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria offers more great views of Ibiza Town. Or perhaps you'd prefer to browse the designer boutiques and luxury shops of the modern Marina district down by the harbour. It's a vibrant and elegant area lined with waterfront cafés, bars and restaurants. After a couple of hours in the old town, you'll head for the famous Las Dalias Hippy Market. More of an institution than a market, it's a real potpourri of artisans and artists who design, make and sell their own handicrafts. Here you can pick up a fantastic variety of craft and fashion - from beads and bangles to original paintings of local beauty spots. You can even book a massage, or sit down for refreshments.

The sunset in Ibiza is all-around iconic, whether you’re watching it from a private boat or from Sunset Strip in San Antonio. However, the most critical thing to know is exactly what time the sun sets .

Depending on the month you’re visiting the island, the sunset times will change. If you know what time to look out for, you’ll have ample opportunity to grab a cocktail and kickback to enjoy a spectacular honey-hued sunset.

Sunsets in Summer

Months: from June – September

The summer season for Ibiza needs no real introduction. Picture long hot summer days, cloudless skies, star-filled evenings, and incredible sunsets. The most fun season to visit Ibiza is during the summer months, when it’s the peak party season and temperatures reach 30°C or higher.

The sun sets in a south-westerly direction, and in late-June and July the sun starts to dip around 9 PM. By September the evenings start at 8.30 PM.

You can expect plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures during the day, and bright coloured skies before nightfall. Keep in mind that the island is jam-packed with partygoers and beach lovers, so allow sufficient travel time to your sunset spot.

Sunsets in Autumn

Months: from September to December

Autumn is characterised by an increase in rainfall, with the wettest month being October. However, the weather remains balmy with an average temperature of 23°C. The afternoons are warm with the cool sea breezes.

The sun begins to set at around 8.30 PM in September, and by October you’ll get to catch an early sunset at around 7.30 PM. November, the sunsets will start to set at 5.30 PM, so grab an early dinner and enjoy the gorgeous view.

Sunsets in Winter

Months: from December to March

Winter season on the island is not as harsh as other Central European countries. The average temperature between December and February is around 11°C. Storms and rainfall often occur during winter.

If you’re looking for a quiet time in Ibiza (and to escape the bustling crowds), this is the time to go. You’ll catch the sun setting in a southwest direction. In December, the sun drops as early as 5.30 PM and starts an hour later in February at 6.15 PM.

Sunsets in Spring

Months: from March – June

In early springtime, the climate in Ibiza is slightly cooler with daytime temperatures ranging between 10°C to 21°C. There is a decent amount of rainfall, along with a refreshing evening breeze.

The island becomes shrouded in the fragrance of blooming flowers. Soft rains occur, but this only adds appeal to the weather in Ibiza. You’ll catch the warm sunsets in a northwesterly direction around 6.48 PM.

By May, you can start feeling the sun’s rays become balmy, and the incredible sunsets start to show off at around 8.46 PM.

Note : You should try and arrive 15-20 minutes before the sun is scheduled to start setting – or even earlier.

1. Cala Benirrás Beach

Located on the northern side of the island, Cala Benirrás Beach provides one of the most famous sunset spots in Ibiza. Listen out for the drums’ beat, the most renowned tradition that’s been going since the ’70s.

On Sundays, Cala Benirrás Beach comes alive and is one of the island’s busiest places. Local drummers perform on the beach behind an awe-striking sunset sinking behind Es Cap Bernat’s breath-taking islet.

The beach is sheltered and intimate, making it the perfect sunset spot for picnics. As a result, the place does get busy – especially on Sundays – so it’s best to get there early to find parking in time.

2. Cala Comte

Cala Comte is another famous beach in Ibiza, and for a good reason. It’s sparkling clear waters are out of this world – perfect for beachgoers and snorkelling enthusiasts.

As the sun sets, you’ll be rewarded with picturesque views of the skies colours dramatically changing.

Head to Sunset Ashram’s bar and restaurant perched on the rocks overlooking the golden unspoiled sands on the west coast, at Cala Comte.

Enjoy a mix of tunes from the DJs playing sunset sessions as you select from a tasty menu under beach umbrellas, ready to embrace the sunset.

3. Es Vedrà

Looming off the south coast of Ibiza stands the rock of Es Vedrà, the famous island that raises much controversy.

Many urban myths surround this island, from being the tip of the sunken city of Atlantis, the island that invigorated the Sirens from Homer’s Odyssey, and as the third most magnetic place on earth. While it’s unlikely that these are true, this place’s magic is most likely what inspired these legends.

The best place to see the sunsets is Torre des Savinar or Sa Pedrera de Cala d’Hort. At dusk, Es Vedrà fascinates with its beauty. 4. Cala Conta

Cala Conta’s beaches are one of the most popular sets of seasides on the west front of the island. It’s popularly known for sublime days spent frolicking in the transparent blue waters or lolling on the warm sands.

It’s a 15-minute drive from San Jose and San Antonio, and many make their way to this beach for the sunsets.

You’ll find two beaches next to each other and a nudist beach, all with views of the beautiful islet of S’illa des Bosc (Forest Island).

Here you’ll find plenty of restaurants to watch the sunset from – make sure you arrive early to snag a table and grab a cocktail before the sunset.

Alternatively, spend the day on a beach-hopping cruise before settling down to watch amazing sunset views.

5. Sunset Strip

One of the most famous parts of the island to enjoy the extraordinary evening sky is San Antonio’s Sunset Strip. The strip of bars and restaurants hug the bay and offer a clear view of the setting sun.

It’s home to iconic bars such as Café Mambo, Savanna, Café del Mar , and numerous other pubs with terraces. 

Because of its popularity, some places require reservations during golden hour, while at others you just need to turn up early. If you’re on a budget, the alternative is to take your drink and find a rock to sit on, and enjoy the spectacular views and a lively atmosphere.

If you’re looking to let loose, hop on one of Ibiza’s party boats to explore parts of the island on a sunset cruise and stop over at popular beach clubs.

6. Las Salinas

For a serene picture of the sun’s reflection setting over the water, head to Las Salinas. It’s a beach stretch backed by pine trees, dunes, and salt flats. Here you can witness the mirror reflection of the sky’s different hues turning rich casts of colours on the waters.

7. Es Codolar Beach

Close to Playa d’en Bossa, is the quieter beach of Es Codolar. Fewer people visit the beach, mostly because it’s covered in pebbles. However, this is soon forgotten when you experience the sunsets.

Punta Galera is on the western side of Ibiza. It can be reached by car but it is a very dangerous road so you may want to plan on visiting Punta Galera from the sea. A boat is a great place to watch the sunset in Punta Galera or get out and sit on its flat rocks and enjoy the view.

12. Na Xamena Cliffs

13. Las Puertas Del Cielo

This bar and restaurant is near the village of Santa Agnes. Its name translates to The Gates of Heaven and that is an apt description of the sunset which can be enjoyed from this spot.

The boat was fully packed making it quite tight quarters. Not much room to move about. I understand that the more bodies the more revenue but it’s was just too crowded to really enjoy yourself. Crew was great considering what limited interaction we had with them. Drinks were plentiful and the tapas was really nice. Snorkeling gear was only the mask ( no tubes) just sitting in a bucket and the lenses were pretty cloudy. Bring your own stuff if you really want to do some serious snorkeling. The cruise was a nice pace and the scenery was great. The “cave” that you go into is just a small indent in the rocky shore. Not really a cave in my opinion. We pulled in and honked the horn and backed right out. About a 20 second event. Not a lot of “rules” for swimming. Life jackets were optional ( kinda scary ) and paddle boards were limited so it was first come first serve. Jumping off the side of the boat was done by several people without being scolded. Like I said, not a lot of safety protocols which made it more like going out on a friend’s boat for the day. The price was fair for what we got. Seemed like everyone on board enjoyed themselves. If you want to ‘do as the locals do’ then venture off the promenade with a caña (beer) or two, and take a seat with residents and revellers of the island on the beach.

Like the sunsets, the magical islet of Es Vedrá is a definite ‘must see’ when touring Ibiza. The legendary rock has an awesome presence and mysterious magnetism that people flock to witness season after season. Many myths surround this natural wonder; some say it’s the remains of Atlantis, others say it’s the birthplace of the Phoenician goddess Tanit. If you venture to the north of the island, past the quaint town of San Miguel, you’ll wind up at Benirrás Beach. This weekly DIY dusk concert is an authentic White Isle experience that’s worth organising a road trip for.

The backdrop to this stunning sunset location features a very distinct rock formation known locally as the ‘Finger of God’. After this stop, we will border one of the natural reserve islands, Conejera Island whose millenary history begins in Phoenician times in the 3rd century BC.

We will cross the passage of the reefs of one of the islands, and we will head towards the pirate’s tower (Torre d’en Rovira) and we will realize, the historical past of the island of Ibiza, where Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Pirates created an illuminated and dark past at the same time.

Bordering the coast, we will arrive at the Cala Bassa area where, slowly entering its bay, on the right we will see the hippy’s cave and on our left the legendary pirates’ cave.

In this legendary cave, we will make a short stop outside, where we can enter swimming or with paddleboards, this legendary cave has an exit to the exterior that illuminates the entrance, being used in the past by pirates and smugglers of Tobacco to have a connection with the sea from the coast, this naturally lighted cave is not dangerous, since even children enter it, some of them standing with paddleboards.

After this short visit, we will anchor not far from there, in a small secluded bay of emerald green seabed, where we can swim, snorkel, and see numerous rockfish and hopefully octopus on the rocks or the mimicry of cuttlefish, all this local fauna is not dangerous in any case.

At the end of this beautiful and peaceful stay, the sun will be close to the horizon, and we will head towards the most iconic coast of Ibiza to watch the sunset.

Once we reach the coast of Mambo café. The sun will be almost near the horizon, and we will serve very cold cava to enliven the observation of this beautiful astronomical phenomenon, where the solar disk will be hidden in the sea with an orange to reddish colour, After these beautiful moments, we will observe the fusion of colours in the twilight sky, that indicate the arrival of night, at this moment we will head to port and disembark almost at night.

The boat was fully packed making it quite tight quarters. Not much room to move about. I understand that the more bodies the more revenue but it’s was just too crowded to really enjoy yourself. Crew was great considering what limited interaction we had with them. Drinks were plentiful and the tapas was really nice. Snorkeling gear was only the mask ( no tubes) just sitting in a bucket and the lenses were pretty cloudy. Bring your own stuff if you really want to do some serious snorkeling. The cruise was a nice pace and the scenery was great. The “cave” that you go into is just a small indent in the rocky shore. Not really a cave in my opinion. We pulled in and honked the horn and backed right out. About a 20 second event. Not a lot of “rules” for swimming. Life jackets were optional ( kinda scary ) and paddle boards were limited so it was first come first serve. Jumping off the side of the boat was done by several people without being scolded. Like I said, not a lot of safety protocols which made it more like going out on a friend’s boat for the day. The price was fair for what we got. Seemed like everyone on board enjoyed themselves. The Most Awe-Inspiring Places to Watch the Sunset in Ibiza

Ibiza sunsets are the stuff of legend, providing the perfect opportunity to kick back and watch the sky turn to fiery reds and pinks over the sea – before heading out to to party into the early hours. Whether you want to be at one with nature, sipping cocktails in a beach bar , or larging it up on the infamous Sunset Strip, we’ve picked out the best spots on the island to enjoy this daily awe-inspiring spectacle.

A particularly stunning spot to watch the sun go down is on the cliffs above Cala d’Hort , opposite Es Vedrà , which is a rocky and uninhabited island just off the southwest coast of Ibiza. A mythical place, folklore says not only that the island is the third most magnetic place on earth, but that it’s the birthplace of Phoenician goddess Tanit. Legend also has it as home to the sirens and sea nymphs who tried to lure Ulysses from his ship in Homer’s Odyssey. There is an ancient ruined tower on the cliffs , historically used to keep watch for pirates, and now a very picturesque place from which to watch the sunset.

1. Sunset Strip, San Antonio

The legendary Sunset Strip in San Antonio is one of the most famous places in Ibiza to watch the sun dip under the horizon. This strip of bars has a clear view to the setting sun and is home to iconic bars like the Café del Mar and Café Mambo . There are numerous other bars with large terraces along the strip, though sunset is inevitably a popular time and some require reservations and have minimum spends; for others, you just need to turn up early and hope for the best. The cheaper option is to take your drink and sit on the rocks. Wherever you end up sitting, expect lots of people, a lively atmosphere, and spectacular views.

2. Benirrás Beach

Sunset Ashram

A renowned place to watch the sunset, Sunset Ashram is a bar and restaurant on the beautiful unspoilt beach at Cala Comte, and has a resident DJ playing music throughout the day and guest DJs playing sunset sessions. Relaxed and unpretentious, the bar is on the rocks that divide the beach, with seating under rustic beach umbrellas, and the restaurant serves very tasty Mediterranean, Indian and Japanese food. If you want to come and enjoy a cocktail and watch the sun go down, it’s best to call ahead and reserve a table as it gets very busy later in the day.

Cotton Beach Club

Whitewashed to Balearic perfection, Cotton Beach Club sits on top of the cliffs on the southwest coast, overlooking Cala Tarida in a prime position for watching the sun sink into the sea. FAY, the beach club’s Asian fusion restaurant, makes the perfect setting for a romantic dinner with sunset views – you can enjoy a fine dining experience on the rooftop or the sea-front terrace. The wine and cocktail list is extensive and the food (particularly the ceviche) is excellent.

3. Las Salinas

One of Ibiza’s most famous beaches – Las Salinas – is a long stretch of sand, backed by the sand dunes, pine trees, and salt flats set on the southern tip of the island. Watching the sun go down over the still water and the salt flats is something not to be missed. Las Salinas is extremely popular and very busy in high season, and the beach has numerous beach bars, providing drinks, food, and music throughout the day and evening. Sa Trixna , at the far end, is a bit of an an institution on the island and has been around since the 1970s – the relaxed, hippy feel makes it an ideal venue to enjoy a sundowner.

What better way to watch the sun dip in the sky and drop into the sea than on a boat – whether that be for romance or a full-on party cruise. There are various companies offering sunset excursions, usually running for three or four hours, with the majority departing from San Antonio. On a recent Tuesday in May, three neither rich nor famous ladies are running full-tilt through the streets of Cannes, France, past the star-studded red carpet during the opening of its 77th annual film festival. In just a few hours, Meryl Streep will arrive to receive her Honorary Palme d'Or prize. And the latest films from legends like Francis Ford Coppola, George Miller and Kevin Costner will have their world premieres.

Meanwhile, we three amigos are dodging the French police, skirting a wall of metal barricades, and elbowing through a crush of paparazzi snapping photos — of everyone but us.

“If you fall, I’m not carrying you back to the boat!” shouts my ship-mate Jo, as her flip-flops smack the pavement. “I’m not going to fall!” I shout back, gaining speed despite being in a somewhat sozzled state courtesy of the iconic Carlton Cannes hotel — a truly wonderful spot to witness Hollywood royalty roll by sur La Croisette. But that’s beside the point. We’ve got to get back to the floating resort called Scarlet Lady before we’re left stranded on the French Riviera without her 20 restaurants, two outdoor pools, full-service spa, fitness center and our own Mega Rock Star cabin with an ocean-facing balcony, fully stocked bar and dedicated butler.

In my defense, being deposited on shore during the Cannes film festival is really THE time to wear impossibly high heels if there ever was one. Because being dressed for the unexpected, spontaneous bursts of joy that just happen-to-happen before, during, or after an on-land excursion is, in my humble opinion, the entire point of cruising in the first place.

For better or worse, cruising is back. Carnival , Norwegian and Royal Caribbean all reported entering the year with record highs for individual bookings and cruise pricing. Though Virgin Voyages is a relatively small player in the mega-ship space with only three ships in operation (its fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, will set sail September 2025 from New York City), the company is leaning heavily into its “ Shore Things ” excursions. Exclusive or novel on-land tours are a clear way to differentiate their product offerings and increase bookings. Having recently raised $550 million from investors , the pressure to do so is high.

On average, only 30% of Virgin sailors book tours according to Shore Things manager Ali Samms, which means there’s room to grow. Of course, others are doing the same ; evermore elaborate excursions are becoming table-stakes for the industry.

“We usually offer 15 to 20 tours per port, at varying price points,” Natasha Salzedo, Virgin Voyages Director of Itineraries and Destinations, explains. “Everyone has different expectations, so I’m hoping we can find something everyone can connect with and really delve into the destination. ‘Off the beaten path’ means something a little different for everybody, but really being able to uncover hidden gems that a sailor would have never known about or weren’t able to experience before — that’s the idea.”

This summer and into the fall, Scarlet Lady is sailing seven-night Mediterranean itineraries out of Barcelona dubbed “ Irresistible Med ” and “ French Daze & Ibiza Nights .” Choosing the latter, I convinced Jo, my friend of 28 years, who, like me, gave birth in the dire circumstances of 2020, to celebrate this Mother’s Day by going all-in and signing up for excursions in every possible port of call, including Marseilles, Cannes, Mallorca and Ibiza. To us, the prospect of a whole week without wiping noses or soothing toddler tantrums is like telling us we’re about to be beamed to the moon. We don’t believe it until…

Sip Lounge Champagne Bar

We’re welcomed onboard with champagne flutes and ushered into a swanky lounge bar, where we’re checked-in to our Tom Dixon-designed RockStar suite, complete with vinyl record player and adjustable mood lighting. There are 1,330 cabins and 78 RockStar quarters aboard the Scarlet Lady, where we expect to receive “RockStar” treatment.

Which is fitting, as this is a very Branson boat. Meaning, it’s an adults-only party staffed by omnipresent DJs. There are solo traveler itineraries, with plenty of opportunities for singles to coagulate. And, on Scarlet Night, the week’s biggest party, people end up dancing in the pool with hired dancers and drag queens. Here are the highlights:

Cassis, France

MARSEILLE | DAY 2

The Calanques Coast by Boat and Foot

At first glance, Marseille is massive, gritty and chaotic. But as our tour bus heads east down the highway, the busy port soon gives way to the vineyards of Cassis, a cheerfully-colored seaside town, famous for its dramatic cliffs and crisp rosé wine. We admire the hand-painted boats along the docks until it's time to get in one, a small sightseeing charter, which takes us out for a close-up look at Les Calanques — a dramatic coastline of powder-white limestone cliffs, covered in tall, thin pine trees that grow straight up from the rocks, and seem to peer over the azure bays below.

Our Franglish-speaking tour guide, Audrey, grew up outside Marseille, and provides us with a basic overview of each place-of-interest. She points out Port-Miou, a natural cove with its own small, sandy beach, though evidently it would be too cold (in May), or too time-consuming for our group to stop and swim. So, we head back to Cassis, and are left with under two hours “at leisure.” At this point, we’re starving, so four of us take the boat captain’s advice and head to La Vieille Auberge , one of many French bistros along the harbor. “Go there, not there” he grunts through leathery-tan skin. “Next door, people get sick.” Like they say, locals know best. It’s touristy, but we don’t care, because the tuna tartare is fresh, the Sancerre is flowing and the daube provençale (beef bourguignon) is served in its own copper pot. We’re in France mes amis , let the gourmet games begin!

CANNES | DAY 3

Red, White, & Rosé Days

Bright and early (around 9am cruise time) we’re speeding towards the shore in a small tender boat, chatting away with a serial-cruising couple from Dallas, when suddenly the Cannes coastline unfurls before our eyes. The buildings look pink, nestled into hillside cliffs, gently waking up with the morning sun. La Côte D’Azur.

Firmly on land, our guide Sandrine from Nice shepherds us into a bus, which drives (painfully) away from Cannes, just as it prepares for its film festival close-up. Alas, we have no choice. This is a group tour, which require a go-with-the-flow mentality, so we hurtle along the coast past Pierre Cardin’s bizarre bubble house, the stunning red rocks of Cap Roux and through the Provençal countryside towards Taradeau, grounds of Château Saint-Martin , which dates back to 1740. The cellar tour and wine tasting is an opportunity to socialize with other sailors. After the third pour of light and fruity Eternelle Favorite rosé, everyone is sharing their experiences and feeling appreciative of the thirsty 18th-century monks who originally made this place a wine-making priory. Their stone cellar is still in use.

By 2:30pm, we’re deposited back in Cannes, with the caveat that we must return to the boat by 7:30pm. That’s five glorious hours to be here on this night of nights, when the whole city comes alive with excitement. Women are decked out to the nines with the GDPs of small nations hanging on their necks. We scurry along the Croisette to the Carlton Cannes hotel because we cliché Americans are still in love with the 1995 movie French Kiss . Remember when Meg Ryan pratfalls over the dessert tray? This is that hotel. There’s zero chance we’re getting a table. But we have to try. I give the doorman my warmest smile, and the next thing you know, we’re escorted past a lobby press conference and a bright-eyed bartender is asking how we like our martinis. Clean with ice cold Tanqueray in a coupe glass, merci .

PALMA DE MALLORCA | DAY 5

Culture in Valldemossa and Lunch in Deià

After Cannes, it’s a blessing that we have a day in-between excursions at sea. These are days to rest, exercise, play, work (the free-wifi actually works thanks to Starlink), and then try not to overeat — all food is included in your ticket price — on this floating party resort. The reprieve gives us the energy we’ll need for what happens today: our first-ever visit to Mallorca, which rises from the Balearic sea like a Moorish dream. The word that comes to mind is: exquisite.

Our official Mallorcan guide, Dominik Gelada Rabiger deserves a mention, because he gives the best tour yet. On group jaunts like these, the quality of your experience depends almost entirely on the guide. Rabiger was born and raised here, speaks English, German and Spanish, and knows everything there is to know about this island. On the bus ride through the Tramuntana mountains to Valldemossa, he regales us with the island’s history (Mallorca switched between Roman, Byzantine, and Moor rule before becoming the autonomous region of Spain it is today). Next, we tour the grand old monastery La Cartuja, once home to kings, monks, and the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin and his French mistress, novelist Amantine Dupin (1804-1876), who used the pseudonym George Sand. Frankly, the town is really milking the couple’s three months here, when Chopin was quarantined with tuberculosis, for all the tourist dollars it can — but we don’t mind. We’re treated to a 15-minute piano recital in the concert hall, which occurs eight times daily in summer, and then emerge to a sunny afternoon, free to buy cutesy souvenirs like these Spanish espadrilles .

Our next stop solidifies my stance: great excursions can justify a cruise. An al fresco lunch overlooking the sea has been organized in Deià, at La Residencia, a Belmond hotel . If you follow luxury hotels, you know Belmond is one of the world’s best brands, and this particular property — formerly owned in the 1980s by Richard Branson himself (word is he’s been trying to buy it back ever since) — is everything a hotel lover could ask for, starting with the stone entrance. To get to lunch, we hike the pavers up to Restaurante Miro’s terrace, past lush landscaping overflowing with lavender, lemon trees, olive trees and the seductive scent of white jasmine.

The tables are beautifully set with local wines (read: unavailable back home), homemade breads, and plenty of Mallorcan olives and olive oil. Salads are a mix of tomato and mozzarella full of Jabugo ham from pure-bred Ibérico pigs dressed in balsamic cream, followed by beef tenderloin with potato gnocchi in a red wine sauce. We wash it all down with a Raimat cabernet , and finish the elegant meal with perfect rectangles of homemade almond cake, served with a side of deeply comforting almond gelato.

Let’s just say, I’m already counting the days until I return to stay here for as long as humanly possible. Fun fact: United Airlines flies direct from Newark to Palma.

IBIZA | DAY 6-7

Ibiza Beach Club Experience

To culminate the week, an overnight stay in Ibiza is the night many on this party-happy cruise ship have been waiting for. For us mamas, the idea of clubbing until 4am sounds more like a nightmare. Judging from our short stint at the Scarlet Lady’s nightclub, the Manor, we wouldn’t last more than 30 minutes inside Ibiza’s Pacha, the famed oontz-oontz nightclub where everyone else is headed. Instead, we merry sailors (now a tight-knit group of four) head to the Six Senses resort on the north side of the island, just a 30-minute Uber ride away. Ibiza’s sunset, seen from the Beach Caves restaurant at Six Senses, is spectacular. The strum of the guitar from the long-haired, barefoot smiling Spanish buddha, Juan Calero Navalon, is the kind of transporting experience that encapsulates why people travel in the first place.

By the next morning, we’re ripe for rest and relaxation. Thankfully, the ‘beach club experience’ involves lying down on a full sized foam mattress (with pillows!) right out on the sand at the Nassau Beach Club . This venue is the most touristy yet, but once again, that doesn’t bother us because we’re shaded by a large umbrella, drinking a complimentary pitcher of Sangria, enjoying the views. These people bring hooch beachwear to another level. Diamond mesh doesn’t cover anything, honey!

Very soon, our adventure will come to a close and we’ll be flying coach from Barcelona back to real life. But daytime in Ibiza is a bit like daytime in Las Vegas — it’s just what we need to emotionally move on. It also helps that Gaya, our exceptionally helpful “Mega Rockstar Agent,” essentially a cabin butler, has already organized our car transfer back to the airport without us having to lift a finger. A hospitality graduate from Mumbai, she has looked after our every need throughout the week.

7 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE BOOKING

• Bookings: Virgin heavily promotes Shore Excursions weeks before boarding via email marketing blasts. Don’t ignore them. Book your excursions early, or they will be sold out, because there are not enough seats to go around.
• Passport: You do not need to carry your passport. Store it in your safe on the boat; just make sure you’re back on board on time! Your tour guide will remind you of your curfew time at least thrice.
• Paperwork: You’ll be asked to sign a ticket contract before embarkation and liability waivers on tour buses. It’s par for the course.
• Tips: No tips are needed for tour guides. Tipping is included in your voyage fare.
• Refunds: Shore Things are fully refundable, if you cancel 48 hours before the start of the excursion taking place. You can use the Virgin Voyages App to do this, which the company makes you download before boarding. It’s where you’ll find your itinerary, communicate with staff, or order food and drinks to your cabin.
• Pricing: Virgin Voyages uses dynamic pricing to dictate tour pricing (the higher demand for a specific tour, the higher the price). Per their website, “Please be aware that price will vary by voyage and can be found in your app or by calling Sailor Services.” When you see ‘Starting from,’ take it with a grain of salt. Our Shore Things ranged from $320 to $530.
• Tour Operators : “This Shore Thing operator has received third-party certification based on the Global Sustainable Tourism Council criteria” is listed on each of the above tours. If it’s not listed, choose one that is.
