2022 Mayakoba leaderboard, scores: Russell Henley sets 36-hole record at World Wide Technology Championship

The notorious fast starter will look to finish the world wide technology championship with the same bravado.

World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba - Round Two

Many of the best ball strikers in the world made their way to Mayakoba this week for the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship. At the halfway point, it is not world No. 2 Scottie Scheffler, two-time defending champion Viktor Hovland, or two-time major champion Collin Morikawa leading the way; rather, it's 33-year-old Russell Henley.

The former Georgia Bulldog will have plenty on his mind over the coming days with his alma mater taking on the Tennessee Volunteers on the gridiron Saturday, and with him going for his first victory on the PGA Tour since 2017. Standing at 16 under -- a 36-hole scoring record at this event -- and three strokes clear of Sam Ryder and Will Gordon, Henley will attempt to do what what he has not been able to over the last five years -- close out a golf tournament.

Henley has been close to capturing his fourth PGA Tour title on a number of occasions, but has fallen short at each turn. Just last year, he collapsed down the stretch at the 2021 Wyndham Championship. Months later, he was caught by Hideki Matsuyama at the 2022 Sony Open, where he ultimately fell in a playoff.

With plenty of golf yet to be played, Henley will have to fight not only the competition but his inner demons around El Camaleon Golf Club. With many unknown quantities occupying the first page of the leaderboard, just slightly further behind, a couple of the pre-tournament favorites may be licking their chops as both Hovland and Morikawa stand at 8 under and eight strokes adrift.

1. Russell Henley (-16)

Russ is cooking at the moment, but that is not to say we have not seen this movie before. A prolific fast starter, it has been the final 36 holes which has tripped up Henley ever since his last victory at the 2017 Houston Open. His accurate driving and precise iron play is likely to persist, but keep an eye on the putter as it has often been the problem child of his when attempting to close out tournaments.

"I felt great the last two days," said Henley. "Mentally felt confident and believing in what I was doing. Hit a lot of fairways and had some nice par saves today that kept my round going. Obviously very happy with where I am."

Other contenders

T2. Sam Ryder, Will Gordon (-13)

4. Patton Kizzire (-12)

5. David Lingmerth (-11)

T6. Brian Harman, Martin Laird, Harry Higgs (-10)

T9. Maverick McNealy, Greyson Sigg, Matt Kuchar, Scott Piercy, Patrick Rodgers (-9)

Playing on a sponsor's exemption this week, Higgs is taking full advantage of his opportunity down in Mexico. His second round of 9-under 62 was extremely timely as the former SMU Mustang entered the week having missed 16 of 20 cuts including his first three of the 2022-23 PGA Tour season. Losing his PGA Tour card last season and missing all three cuts in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, quality performances have been hard to come by.

"I mean, all over the place," Higgs said of his current state of mind. "Like I have had a lot of poor days and a lot of consecutive poor days, and then I've also had not as many as I would like, but I've had some days that were great where I had full control, I was making good decisions, I was kind of, as we all say, getting out of my own way."

Harman's ace propels him into contention

Back-to-back rounds of 5-under 66 have Brian Harman in the thick of it at Mayakoba for the first time in his career. Playing at El Camaleon for the 10th time in his career, the 35-year-old had previously done no better than a T30 finish. Kickstarting his day with a hole-in-one on the par-3 4th, Harman will have a memory regardless of if this form continues over the weekend.

"You know, this place kind of had my number over the years, haven't really done very good here and today was kind of one of those days, just kind of chopping around, wasn't doing that great," said Harman. "Just settled down, made a couple really good swings, started with that one into the wind, just hooded a 50 [degree wedge] and slung it back in there."

2022 Mayakoba updated odds, picks

Odds via Caesars Sportsbook

  • Russell Henley: 11/10
  • Will Gordon: 9-1
  • Sam Ryder: 11-1
  • Brian Harman: 18-1
  • Viktor Hovland: 20-1
  • Patton Kizzire: 22-1
  • Collin Morikawa: 28-1
  • Maverick McNealy: 30-1
  • Matt Kuchar: 35-1
  • David Lingmerth: 35-1
  • Martin Laird: 45-1

After opening with an even-par 71, Morikawa shot inside the top 20 with an 8-under 64 on Friday. Coming into the week with his iron play in form, he has carried this approach play and coupled it with a few nice putts in his second round. There are numerous question marks at the top of this leaderboard and that should give way to a weekend charge from a player such as Morikawa, who will give himself plenty of birdie looks over the next couple days. It will take a momentous effort being eight strokes off the pace, but at roughly double his pre-tournament price could be worthy of an investment.

"Eight's a lot, but eight's still doable come this weekend," said Morikawa of the deficit. "This golf course, the way it's playing, you can post two really good low ones on the weekend. I'm definitely going to need that if I'm going to be in contention, but after today I'm feeling pretty good."

2022 Mayakoba leaderboard: Will Gordon leads, Viktor Hovland chasing at World Wide Technology Championship

Two of the top 11 players in the world are within striking distance in mexico.

will-gordon-getty.jpg

The first round of a sneaky good Mayakoba event is in the books, and while the top of the leaderboard doesn't jump off the page, the field's strength sits just beyond the leaders.

Will Gordon and Russell Henley are Nos. 1-2 at the top of this board after firing 62 and 63 respectively in Round 1, but the heavyweights are a few strokes back and looking to roll to the top on Friday and beyond. Let's take a look at how Thursday played out at Mayakoba.

1. Will Gordon (-9): Gordon made eight birdies and an eagle en route to his first-round lead. The former Vanderbilt golfer had a strong year on the Korn Ferry Tour last season, accumulating six top 10s (including a win) and finishing sixth on the KFT points list. His best finish on the PGA Tour, however, is a T3 at the 2020 Travelers Championship. He said after his 62 that he's eschewing what he tried to do in the past by tempering his expectations.

"I think that's what I've tried to do in the past, but honestly I'm just going to try to enjoy the moment and continue just to move forward," Gordon said. "I don't know what the rest of the week holds, nothing's promised and nothing's given, so I've just got to continue to try to go out and earn it."

Gordon's season has gotten off to a really nice start as he's made the cut at each of his first four events of the year. It was fascinating to hear him discuss what he's learned and how he's grown mentally because of the success of those he's competed with on the KFT.

"There's a lot of guys kind of my age and younger that are having a lot of success out here and guys that have been out here and had some major success that I grew up playing with," Gordon said. "So ... it does kind of take the fear away in a sense because you know you can do it, but you've still got to go out and do it and earn it. So it's been good to see the KFT class play well this fall and I've gotten to see a bunch of those guys, so it's been a cool transition this fall."

Other contenders

2. Russell Henley (-8)

T3. Scott Piercy, Francesco Molinari, Sam Ryder, Harris English (-7)

T7. David Lingmerth, Martin Laird, Scottie Scheffler, Viktor Hovland (-6)

The big dogs reside there at the T7 spot with Hovland going for his third consecutive victory at this tournament and Scheffler aiming for his fifth PGA Tour win in 2022. They played together on Thursday and shot a best ball 60.

"For the most part you're doing your own thing, but it's nice when you're on the golf course and you can see other players hitting really good shots," Scheffler said. "I think that's good kind of momentum for the group, when somebody starts playing well, the other guys can kind of feed off of it sometimes."

Hovland's last nine rounds at Mayakoba look like this: 67-69-63-65-67-65-62-67-65. That makes for a 65.6 average over the last three seasons, which is absolutely ridiculous. Still, Hovland says he can (and should) play better than he did on Thursday.

"I think the last two years I've started 4 and 5 under (He was 4 under in the first round of both wins), so even improved on that," Hovland said. "Obviously I made a couple putts and holed out from the bunker. Did a lot of good stuff today, but at the same time I felt like I hit some really bad shots, too. So I feel like there's still opportunities to improve."

Where's Morikawa?

I'm not going to get concerned about Collin Morikawa (or any top 10 player in the world) at the start of November of any year. However, he shot 71 on Thursday and is currently T90. If he finishes outside the top 25 (which looks like a probability right now), that would mark three straight events to start his season in which he hasn't notched a top 25 appearance. It's something that's worth monitoring.

2022 Mayakoba odds, picks

  • Scottie Scheffler: 6-1
  • Viktor Hovland: 13/2
  • Russell Henley: 9-1
  • Will Gordon: 14-1
  • Harris English: 18-1
  • Maverick McNealy: 18-1
  • Tom Hoge: 22-1
  • Francesco Molinari: 22-1

It's a pretty interesting board right now. Scheffler is a bit too short for my taste, although I do kind of love Hovland at 13/2. Hoge at 22-1 is speaking my language. I've been riding the Hoge train for weeks now, and he can't stop shooting scores in the mid 60s. He's one of the best iron players in the world that nobody knows about. The value here is probably with Tony Finau -- who was my pre-tournament pick -- at 35-1. He's 3 under and just four back of third place. That's nothing for a scorer like Big Tone at a place like Mayakoba, and I'm  believing that he shook any rust he had off in Round 1.

Shooting 8-under 63 at El Camaleon Golf Course is impressive, but to back it up and do it two days in a row that qualifies as golfing your ball.

Add in the fact that Russell Henley is the only player in the field that is bogey-free through 36 holes and well, let’s just say Henley is in the zone as he improved to 16-under 126 to lead by three strokes over Will Gordon and Sam Ryder at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

“I felt great the last two days,” Henley said. “Mentally felt confident and believing in what I was doing. Hit a lot of fairways and had some nice par saves today that kept my round going. Obviously very happy with where I am.”

As he should. Henley, who last won in 2017, made birdie on three of his final four holes to pull ahead. Henley going low early is nothing knew for him. Since the start of the 2020-21 season, of the seven opening 36-hole scores of 126 or better on Tour, Henley has recorded three of them.

“He’s a guy when he gets going he’s not scared to keep the pedal down and that’s what he’s doing this week,” said Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio’s John Rollins.

Henley has hit 24 of 28 fairways on a course that demands accuracy off the tee and he’s taken advantage of preferred lies being implemented after more than an inch of rain on Wednesday.

“Just being in a good head space for those tee shots is a good start,” Henley said. “Things were going my way.”

That’s putting it mildly for the 33-year-old Henley who is bidding for his fourth PGA Tour title.

Sam Ryder's dream start

pga tour mayakoba leaderboard

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO – NOVEMBER 04: Sam Ryder of United States lines up a putt on the 17th hole during the second round of the World Wide Technology Championship at Club de Golf El Camaleon on November 04, 2022 in Playa del Carmen. (Photo by Orlando Ramirez/Getty Images)

Sam Ryder always likes to birdie the first hole, and he did just that on Friday by sinking a 40-foot putt. As the saying goes, you can’t birdie them all if you don’t birdie the first. Ryder nearly did, pouring in seven birdies in his first nine holes to shoot 29 and race to a five-stroke lead at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

“I didn’t really miss a shot on the opening nine,” Ryder said.

The 32-year-old, who played his college golf at Stetson University, signed for 6-under 65 at El Camaleón Golf Course and a 36-hole total of 13-under 129, tied for second with Will Gordon, and three strokes behind leader Russell Henley.

Ryder is still seeking his first PGA Tour title and tried his best not to think about his lead as he played the back nine.

“But it’s impossible to not know that, OK, I’ve got five shots on the field right now or, you know, it creeps in,” he said.

Ryder made his lone bogey of the day at 10, blaming it on “an uncommitted swing,” but made some clutch par saves including at No. 13, where he hit into a penalty area but managed to save par.

How did his birdie putt on 17, which rimmed out, not go in, he was asked after the round?

“I don’t know how that missed, but I made plenty,” he said. “The hole was looking pretty big. Anything I got within 20 feet I felt like I had a good chance.”

Ace alert for Brian Harman

pga tour mayakoba leaderboard

Brian Harman plays a shot on the 7th hole during the second round of the World Wide Technology Championship in Playa del Carmen. (Hector Vivas/Getty Images)

Since a result of T-26 in his debut at El Camaleon in 2012, Brian Harman has never recorded a better finish in nine starts and missed the cut last year.

“This place kind of had my number over the years,” Harman said.

Credit to Harman for continuing to come back, and this year it may pay dividends as he opened with a pair of 66s to sit at 10-under 132 at the midway point of the tournament.

Harman was stuck in neutral on Friday, even through 12 holes, when he made his third hole-in-one on the PGA Tour at the 113-yard, par-3 fourth hole.

“Watched both the guys in front of me hit pitching wedge and I figured I could hook a 50-degree and get it there,” he said. “It hit and we got to watch it spin right back. That was my first since I got two in one day.”

ACE ALERT 🚨 @HarmanBrian cards a 1️⃣ at No. 4. pic.twitter.com/IyaV7C9ggX — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) November 4, 2022

That was in the final round of the 2015 Barclays. Did it pop into his mind when he got to the par-3 eighth?

“I didn’t even think about it,” he said. “The funny thing is when I made the first one my caddie ‘Country’ said, ‘Well, they come in bunches’ and eight holes later I dunked another one.”

Harman celebrated the ace by reeling off three straight birdies on his way to posting 66. Harman found the fairway just five of 14 times on Friday, which made it hard to take advantage of preferred lies and scrambled for par six of eight times.

“This course has always kind of given me the heebie-jeebies off the tee,” he said. “I think if I can clean up my driver, I’ll have a good chance.”

The Big Rig has weekend plans

pga tour mayakoba leaderboard

Harry Higgs plays a shot on the second hole during the second round of the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship at Club de Golf El Camaleon (Orlando Ramirez/Getty Images)

Could Harry Higgs be breaking out of his slump this week south of the border?

Higgs, who finished 147th in the FedEx Cup standings, has been entrenched on the struggle bus. “Almost all the time I go on the first tee for a competitive round and I don’t really know what’s going to happen, which is a really not fun place to be,” he said.

Friday was not one of those days. The 30-year-old SMU grad hit 17 of 18 greens, made seven birdies and an eagle to shoot 62 and make his first cut in four starts of the 2022-23 season.

“I somehow hit a miracle 7-iron to a foot and a half on 9, my last hole. You know, it was great, don’t have to think about it, tap it in for birdie, and my brother and I were just standing there like, ‘This was like really fun,’ ” he said.

So was holing a lob wedge for eagle from 86 yards at the par-4 third hole.

“I thought it was going to be really good so all I said was ‘in,’ and that’s usually the curse. It either will like fly in the hole and come out or it will lip out,” he said. “Fortunately, I called for it early and it fell in the hole.”

Higgs is playing this week on a sponsor’s exemption and is making the most of his opportunity, improving to 10-under 132 at the halfway point.

“I have a lot to play for. I had a very poor year by my standards and kind of fighting uphill for the entirety of this year. This week is a bonus that World Wide Technologies gave me a sponsor exemption,” he explained.

A lousy attitude has been part of Higgs’s problems but on Friday he and his brother, who caddies for him, said he was “spiraling up” and not down for a change.

“He said he saw something different in me today,” said Higgs of brother Alex. “He said he’s kind of unlocked it, right? So I’m going to go sit and have lunch and hear what he has to say about it.”

Big names have mixed results

pga tour mayakoba leaderboard

Collin Morikawa plays a shot on the 13th hole during the second round of the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship. (Hector Vivas/Getty Images)

Of the three top-ranked players in the field, Collin Morikawa had the best day on Friday.

Morikawa, the World No. 9, rebounded from an indifferent even-par 71 on Thursday to shoot a bogey-free 8-under 63 in the second round, one stroke shy of his career-low on Tour.

“I just didn’t really make too many mistakes,” said Morikawa, who had three birdies in a row on each nine.

Still, he’s got more ground to make up as he sits at 8-under 134, T-14 and eight behind Henley at the midway point.

Two-time defending champion Viktor Hovland, ranked No. 11, has his work cut out for himself if he’s going to three-peat. Hovland, who opened with 65, made just three birdies on Friday en route to posting 2-under 69. He’s tied with Morikawa too.

“Eight’s a lot, but eight’s still doable come this weekend,” Morikawa said. “This golf course, the way it’s playing, you can post two really good low ones on the weekend. I’m definitely going to need that if I’m going to be in contention, but after today I’m feeling pretty good.” (Data Golf gives Morikawa a 2.1 percent chance of winning…so they’re saying there is a chance!)

World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler is going to need a big weekend to regain the top spot in the world. He needs to win or finish solo second and heads into the weekend 10 back of Henley after shooting even-par 71. His putter let him down. There aren’t strokes gained statistics available this week, but PGA Tour Radio’s Will Haskett estimated that Scheffler lost around 3 strokes to the field on the greens. He’s at 6-under 136 and in a share of 29th going into the weekend.

2021 Mayakoba leaderboard: Matthew Wolff sets course record, leads Aaron Wise by two after Round 1

Wolff somehow also leads a golfer who made two eagles in his first four holes.

wolff-mayakoba-2021.png

For the second consecutive season, a former Oklahoma State superstar is the story at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. One year after his former OSU teammate (Viktor Hovland) won for the second time on the PGA Tour, Matthew Wolff leads by two as he looks for a second Tour victory of his own.

Wolff shot a El Camaleón Golf Course record 61 Thursday at in a round that included five birdies on either side of the golf course and no blemishes whatsoever. He's up two on Aaron Wise and three on Chris Kirk (who aced his first hole of the day) and a handful of others.

Let's dive deeper into Wolff's round and his chances of winning to end what has been an odd year for him and take a look at who could make a little run at him over what should be a very fun next 54 holes.

1. Matthew Wolff (-10): After a chaotic 2021 overall, Wolff emerged a few weeks ago at the Shriners Children's Open with a runner-up finish to Sungjae Im. It was his best performance in a year and provided a ton of hope for the future. The momentum has carried over into Mayakoba, which is extremely exciting considering Wolff's talent level and ceiling. Toss a suddenly-thriving Wolff into an already crazy contingent of golfers at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings, and anticipation for 2022 only gets turned up.

"I don't want to say [I'm back]," Wolff said. "I'm really confident in my game right now and I've proven over time when stuff goes well and I am confident I can kind of carry it over. So right now my swing feels really good, my head's in a good spot and I'm just happy to be out here regardless of the result. I'm just, you know, like I said, I'm just happy. I'm blessed to be out here. And it's not easy and there's a lot of up-and-downs, but you've just kind of got to go with it and that's something I'm learning as I'm getting older and being out here longer."

2. Aaron Wise (-8): Nobody is more pleased with Wise's performance than … well, me. He was my one-and-done pick this week and came in off two consecutive top-10 finishes. He shot 29 on the front side of the golf course and 63 overall even with a bogey on the back side. His best stuff is not quite as good as Wolff's, but based on how he's been playing, I suspect he'll be around and very much in the mix until the end of this week.

"I just feel like I have pretty good vibes around here," Wise said. "Every now and again you find those courses where you just come and you're comfortable the moment you're on the grounds and this is one of those for me. I feel like I make my fair share of putts around here, I hit good iron shots and I get a lot of wedge opportunities, which is really good. At the end of the day you've still got to play good golf, but just coming here, I just feel happy, I feel good vibes and I feel like that translates into the golf."

T3. Talor Gooch, Chris Kirk, Billy Horschel, Sergio Garcia (-7): How about Kirk starting his event with an ace on a par 3?! He made another eagle on his fourth hole and was 5 under through four holes! He played the next 14 in just 2 under for the 64, but six birdies and two eagles portends well for the rest of the week for him.

T7. Joel Dahmen, J.J. Spaun, Russell Henley, Bill Haas (-6): Quite a crew here. Haas' last top 10 anywhere came at the 2019 John Deere Classic. He's currently ranked No. 744 in the world, which would be his lowest year-end ranking since 2003.

T11. Ian Poulter, Andrew Landry, Chez Reavie, Rickie Fowler, Adam Long, Sepp Straka, Brandt Snedker, John Huh, Andrew Novak (-5): The season of Oklahoma State golfers returning to form continues! Fowler played in the final pairing at the CJ Cup at Summit a few weeks ago, just a week after Wolff nearly won Shriners, and he's thriving again this week. As always, it's about limiting mistakes for him. He made eight birdies Thursday, which is not unusual for him (he's inside the top 40 in birdie average this season). If he can figure out how to clean up the other stuff, we'll see him truly contend for the second time in three tournaments as this weekend unfolds, which, like Wolff's good play, would be thrilling going into 2022.

TOUR Championship leaderboard without FedExCup Starting Strokes

Change Text Size

The TOUR Championship utilizes the FedExCup Starting Strokes format to reward players who’ve had the best seasons thus far. They’ve earned an advantage over their competition for the final week that decides the FedExCup.

From a betting perspective, players’ scores this week (not including the Starting Strokes) are also important. There are active betting markets for the low 72-hole score this week.

Collin Morikawa is behind top seed Scottie Scheffler in the race for the FedExCup but is one shot clear of his rival in the low 72-hole score chase.

Morikawa’s Saturday 4-under 67 moved him to 17-under for the week, one shot clear of Scheffler who moved to 16-under with another silky 66.

Sahith Theegala has moved into third place at 14-under following a 66 of his own, a score that included a self-imposed two-shot penalty for accidentally moving sand in a bunker. The young gun still has a chance to chase down the leaders on Sunday.

Veteran Australian Adam Scott is fourth at 12-under with Wyndham Clark rounding out the top five at 11-under heading to the final round.
