  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: You’ll likely do a fair amount of walking and hiking, so comfortable and sturdy walking shoes or trekking boots are essential.

Winter (October to April):

  • Warm Winter Clothing: Winters in Gulmarg are cold, with heavy snowfall. Dress in warm, insulated clothing, including a heavy winter coat, thermal layers, and woolen sweaters.
  • Snow Gear: If you plan to engage in winter sports like skiing or snowboarding, rent or bring appropriate snow gear, including waterproof pants, snow boots, and gloves.
  • Accessories: Don’t forget a warm hat, earmuffs, and a good-quality scarf to protect your face and neck from the cold.
  • Snow Boots: Sturdy snow boots with proper insulation and grip are essential for navigating snowy terrain comfortably and safely.
  • Hand and Foot Warmers: These can be a lifesaver, especially if you’re spending extended periods outdoors.
  • Extra Socks and Gloves: Cold, wet hands and feet can be uncomfortable, so pack extra socks and gloves.
  • Thermal Underwear: Wearing thermal or moisture-wicking layers close to your skin can help keep you warm and dry.

Srinagar to Gulmarg One Day Trip

Srinagar to Gulmarg One Day Trip

Our plan for a Srinagar to Gulmarg one day trip was actually a last-minute decision. It was our last week in Srinagar and we were supposed to head back to Delhi over the weekend. A grand trip that covered almost all of the tourist attractions in Kashmir was coming to an end.

But before we went back home, we wanted one last drive in the beautiful valleys of Kashmir. Gulmarg was the nearest place that we could reach without having to drive too long. Hence, a one day trip to Gulmarg from Srinagar was finalized for Wednesday.

The plan was to start as early as possible from Srinagar to avoid the traffic and have breakfast in Gulmarg only. We would then spend the entire day in Gulmarg and return by evening.

Journey So Far:

  • Srinagar to Dawar in Gurez Valley – Day 15
  • Dawar to Chakwali – Day 16
  • Gurez Valley to Srinagar – Day 17
  • Srinagar to Aharbal Waterfall – Day 18
  • Srinagar to Sonamarg to Kargil – Day 19 & 20
  • Kargil to Hambuting La Pass – Day 21
  • Kargil to Hunderman Village – Day 22
  • Drang Drung Glacier – Day 23
  • Zanskar Valley to Srinagar – Day 24, 25, 26

We were in Gulmarg only a few weeks ago and I had already been there a couple of times before that as well. This was going to be my 4th trip to Gulmarg overall and I had already seen everything that there was to see. Still, the beauty of the place is such that I was still excited to be there one more time.

Quick Navigation

Before I move on with the travelogue, let me provide some details on how you can day trip to Gulmarg from Srinagar. Is it doable? Yes, it is. More than half of the tourists actually visit Gulmarg on a day trip only.

You can also take a look at the following video of Gulmarg that I shot during one of my winter trips. You can see how beautiful the place looks after the snowfall.

Will you be able to visit all of the tourist places in Gulmarg ? The answer to that is again a yes. Gulmarg is not that big to be very honest. The entire town is settled around a meadow that also serves as the golf course in summer and ski ground in winter.

So in a total of around 2-3 hours at most, you can just walk around the golf course and see all that there is to see in Gulmarg. If you wanted to go for a Gondola ride, add a couple of hours for that. So in a total of about 6 hours, your trip to Gulmarg will be completed.

Srinagar to Gulmarg One Day Trip

How to Reach Gulmarg for a Day Trip

But this can only be done if you were traveling by either your own vehicle or a private taxi. There is no direct bus or shared cab from Srinagar to Gulmarg . You will have to break your journey into 2 to 3 parts.

From Parimpora or Batmaloo in Srinagar, you will first have to board a bus or shared cab for Magam. From Magam, you will then board a second bus or shared cab for Tangmarg. After you reach Tangmarg, go to the bus stand and board a bus for Gulmarg.

Traveling this way, it will be a bit of a hassle to reach Gulmarg and a lot of your time will be spent traveling. Do not get me wrong, you can still plan a day trip but the time you spend in Gulmarg will be very less compared to the time you will spend to reach there and then travel back to Srinagar.

So the best way is to either hire a private taxi or rent a bike in Srinagar . A bike will cost anywhere between Rs. 1500 to Rs. 2000 for a day. A private taxi also will cost between Rs. 2000 to Rs. 2500 for a day trip.

If you want to travel by public transport, your total fare for the day will be around Rs. 300 per person.

How to Plan a Day Trip to Gulmarg from Srinagar

If you were traveling by your own vehicle or a private taxi, below is how you should plan your day trip to Gulmarg.

Start early from Srinagar, possibly by 7 am. You will avoid traffic and will get to Gulmarg in about 90 minutes easily. Have your breakfast in Gulmarg and go for the Gondola ride first.

The reason why I recommend Gondola first is to make sure you avoid the tourist rush. Sometimes, if there were a lot of tourists around, it can take over an hour to wait in the queue.

The gondola ride starts between 9 am to 10 am. Be there before 9 am and you will easily finish your visit to Phases 1 and 2 by noon.

Come back to Gulmarg, rest for a while, and have your lunch. For the next hour or 2, visit the Maharani temple, St. Mary’s Church, and Strawberry Valley. All these places are located within the Gulmarg Golf course within a short distance from each other.

You will finish your sightseeing in 2 hours at most. You can hire a pony as well if you do not want to walk around.

Start on your way back to Srinagar by 4 am and you will reach your hotel by 6 pm. If you had another hour to spare, you can also go for a drive towards Bota Pathri .

By Public Transport

Planning a day trip by public transport will be a little difficult. You will not be able to start early because you may not find a bus or shared cab before 8 am. By buses and shared cabs, you will reach Gulmarg sometime between 11 am and noon.

You can walk around the golf course, see Maharani temple, and St. Mary’s church, and start on your way back by 3 pm. You will not be able to include a Gondola ride unless you were traveling in the offseason and there was no tourist rush at all.

Srinagar to Gulmarg

Coming back to the travelogue, we started from our hotel at 7 am and reached Gulmarg by 8.30 am. We were there so early that even the dhabas were just starting to open.

Srinagar to Gulmarg One Day Trip

The next hour was spent at one of the dhabas having breakfast and getting something to eat. Once that was done, we were now confused about what to do next. We had all been to Gulmarg before and there was no place left to visit anymore.

On top of it, the moment the sun came up on our heads, it started to turn really hot. I was actually surprised by it because it was the month of October and I was not expecting Gulmarg to be that hot during the day.

Nonetheless, we pondered our options and mutually decided to spend the day in Gulmarg only. The only activity that we were interested in was playing golf and nothing else really.

We went to Hotel Green Park . It was the same hotel that we had stayed in during our previous visit. Thankfully, they had rooms available and we checked in.

Playing Golf in Gulmarg

The rest of the day was spent just sitting in front of the hotel in shade, enjoying the views and chit-chatting. At around 4 pm, when the weather cooled down a bit, we went to the golf course.

None of us knew how to play golf but it was fun nonetheless. I think we were there for over an hour having fun. It is not that costly either and I will highly recommend indulging in a game of golf while you were in Gulmarg.

After golf, we took a drive to Strawberry Valley to see the sunset from there.

We returned to our hotel after it got dark, had dinner, did some more chit-chatting, and called it a day.

The plan for today was to return to Srinagar. There was no need to hurry so the morning was a relaxed one. We walked around for a bit, had a late breakfast, and started from our hotel by 10 am.

The return journey took longer because there was already a lot of traffic on the roads. We reached back our hotel after 1 pm I think and logged into our office laptops.

We were all feeling a little sad after returning from Gulmarg, to be honest. Our trip lasted way longer than we anticipated and we actually ended up visiting Gulmarg and Sonamarg twice during the same trip.

We were scheduled to go back to Jammu on Saturday and Delhi on Sunday. This left us just with one more day in Srinagar, Friday, which we spent buying souvenirs for family and friends.

We bought dry fruits, saffron, Kashmiri spices (as instructed by family), handicraft gift items, shawls, woolens, and a lot many other things.

  • Journey Ahead: Srinagar to Jammu to Delhi

Was the trip fun? Yes, it definitely was. The worst part of this trip I think was the return journey only because we were all feeling sad. We left Kashmir with heavy hearts. Please click on the link above to continue reading the last part of this travelogue.

You can call Gulmarg a happy destination. Because I am sure you will feel nothing but happy in this beautiful hill station of Kashmir. Gulmarg is known as an ultimate skiing destination and one of the top winter destinations in India. It also has the world’s highest Gondola ride. Apart from these there are lots of interesting things to do in Gulmarg.

Meadows of Gulmarg

In short, Gulmarg is spectacular in winter. Infact, this was one of the reasons I was skeptical to visit this place in the spring. Also the fact that we were exploring more of offbeat Kashmir in our trip, I had thought of skipping the popular Gulmarg. But boy! I was so wrong. The place is simply breathtaking in any season. And for a first timer in Kashmir, Gulmarg should be on your Jammu and Kashmir tour , no matter what.

I do have to thank Agni for literally dragging me there. Yeah! Yeah! The wife is not always right! The husband also has great ideas (sometimes!).

A beautiful stream in Kashmir

Gulmarg literally means “the meadow of flowers” . In summer, the green vistas of this place are dotted with colourful flowers. The place with its breathtaking beauty, mesmerizing landscapes, gondola ride and adventure activities is undoubtedly an all season destination. Read along to know our experience here along with things to do in Gulmarg, how to reach, where to stay and other relevant information.

Where is Gulmarg?

Things to do in Gulmarg

Gulmarg is a beautiful hill station located in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. The town is located at an altitude of 8690 feet in the Pir Panjal range of the western Himalayas.

Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak had named this place ‘Gulmarg’ in the 16th century. He used to visit here with his wife Habba Khatoon .

Gulmarg Travel Guide

Gulmarg was also one of the favourite destinations of Emperor Jahangir. It is believed that he had collected as many as 21 wild flowers from here for his own gardens.

During the British rule, Gulmarg served as a retreat for the British soldiers just like Darjeeling , Shimla and Mussoorie.

Gulmarg in shared taxi

You will not get any shared cab from Srinagar. You have to take a shared cab to Tangmarg. From there, you have to take another cab to Gulmarg.  Local buses are also available, but only upto Tangmarg.

What is the best time to visit Gulmarg?

The best time to visit Gulmarg actually depends on what you want to do there. If you are the one to enjoy snow and snow activities, then winter is your time. There are some who visit here to beat the heat of the plains. For them, summer will be the best time. For those looking for greenery in the valleys and flowers, July to September will be a good time. April to June is perhaps the busiest season.

Things to do in Gulmarg in 1 Day

There are a lot of things to do in Gulmarg. As much as we wanted to stay for a night here, we finally opted for a day trip. We decided we would stop for a night here the next time we visit in the winters.

We started quite early from Srinagar and soon we were out of the city. The first glimpse of the mountains seems to show us what to expect for the day. Soon we reached Magam, a small village on the way.

Finally, we reached Tangmarg from where the uphill road starts. The landscape too changes gradually. The plains and fields of mustard are gradually replaced by tall pines and cedars. The green meadows looked soothing to the eyes.

Meadows of Gulmarg

Soon we reached Gulmarg, our destination for the day. The bus stop and parking area is a small place. The place itself is quite a small hill station totally dependent on tourism. There are a number of shops and eateries in the market area. You will also find a lot of guides and ponies in this area. Cars from outside are not allowed beyond this point.

Gulmarg Club House

As soon as we reached the parking area, a number of guides and pony owners approached us. Yes, you will be approached by them and they will ask you to take the help of guides or take a pony ride. If you wish to take a pony ride, you can definitely do so. It will help the local economy.

However, a guide is not required to explore this place. All the places are well marked and there is not much extra a guide to add to the stories.

Ponies at Gulmarg can take you around

If you like to walk around, then ponies are also not needed to explore Gulmarg. The attractions, though not very near, are also not quite far away. If you like to walk around, you can definitely explore the place on foot, especially if you are staying for the night. Let me share with you what we did.

We had reached Gulmarg by 9 AM and decided to explore the place on foot. The pony owners warned us that the places are all far away, but yet we stuck to our decision. We knew that the Gondola ride would start at 11 AM. So we decided to visit the Maharaja Palace first.

1. Looking for History in Maharaja’s Palace

Maharaja Palace

The Maharaja Palace was nearest to the Parking Area. Not that we found much history there, the palace was once a royal palace of King Ranbir Singh of Kashmir. The palace might have been quite grand once upon a time, but time has definitely taken its toll on this wooden structure. The palace looks beautiful from the outside surrounded by tall pine and cedar trees.

Unfortunately, the palace was closed that day. There was a lone guard sitting in front of the palace. Although he did not allow us entry, he did share a few interesting stories about the place. He mentioned that the Maharaja Palace is supposedly haunted and only a braveheart can venture to the place after the sun is down. Well, the worn down building along with the sky high trees did give an eerie appeal to the place.

READ MORE: AHARBAL WATERFALLS – THE NIAGARA OF KASHMIR

After admiring the Maharaja Palace from outside, we decided to head out for our next destination. The guard also informed us that there is a viewpoint just a few steps away from the palace. It is not exactly a viewpoint, but you get a great view of the Baramulla plains and the mountains from there. Pakistan is just beyond those mountains, the guard informed.

Maharaja Palace has a nominal entry fee of Rs 30.00.

2. Gulmarg Golf Course

Gulmarg Golf Course

To be honest, I was awestruck seeing so much green. It was here I decided for the first time that Gulmarg is a happy place.

Gulmarg was once a retreat for the British troops in India. The British quite loved a game of golf and so they developed golf courses in this quaint hill station. The gold course was opened in 1911 and is one of the highest ones in the world. The first Golf Championship was played here in 1922.

The Gulmarg Golf Course was redesigned and reopened in 2011. I do not understand anything about golf. However, I found the place quite beautiful. Everywhere is green and it is so soothing to the eyes.

3. St Mary’s Church

View of St Marys Church in meadows

St. Mary’s Church is located just near the Golf Course. The century old Victorian Church looks quite beautiful standing in the middle of the meadows. The church has grey stone walls and is decorated beautifully inside. It is believed that the church was built in 1902 and was renovated later in 2013.

4. Go for the Gulmarg Gondola Ride

Gulmarg Gondola

After marveling at the St. Mary’s Church, we decided to go towards the Gondola Station. Gulmarg Gondola is by far the biggest attraction of Gulmarg. The cable car takes you from Gulmarg to the top of Apharwat Peak. Believe me, this cable car ride is a ‘once in a lifetime’ kind of experience.

Gulmarg Gondola is one of the world’s highest operating cable cars . This ropeway is capable of ferrying 600 people per hour. The ropeway is divided into 2 phases – Phase 1 and Phase 2. Gulmarg is the starting point while Apharwat is the end point. Kongdori in between is the centre point and the end point of Phase 1.

The Gondola Station is about 1.5 km walking distance from the parking area. If you want to take a pony, it will cost about Rs 200-250.00.

Gulmarg Gondola Boadring Station

The Gulmarg Gondola Boarding Point is a huge building. There is a ticket counter outside from where you will get tickets for both Phase 1 and Phase 2. You can get a ticket to Phase 1 only and then get your ticket to Phase 2 from the Phase 1 cable station.

We got our tickets for Phase 1 only and went inside the boarding station. The inside is quite impressive. Soon we were in the middle of a long queue waiting for our own cable car ride.

View from the cable car at Gondola ride

Gulmarg Gondola Phase 1

Fortunately for us, we did not have to wait more than 10 minutes in the queue. We heard that in peak tourist seasons, the waiting time is considerably longer, both while buying the tickets as well as at the boarding point.

We boarded the cable car and were off. It takes about 10 minutes to reach Kongdori, the Phase 1 station. In between we saw snow, pine trees, Gujjar settlements and more snow. It was an interesting ride. Once we were at Phase 1 station, we got down and stepped out. And this is what we saw!

First view of the snow at Kongdori Phase 1 of Gondola ride

There was snow and snow everywhere. All my desire to see snow in Kashmir was totally fulfilled. First we saw snowfall at Naranag and then on our way to Sonmarg. And finally in Gulmarg we were literally rolling in snow. As we walked down, we saw a few tourists trying their hand on skiing. Several others were playing with the snow while many were enjoying other snow activities.

Views of mountains at Kongdori

What did we do? Well, I was totally ecstatic to see so much snow. Agni was equally happy! We walked, fell down on snow, had a snowball fight and did all the crazy things we wanted to do. Later I went for a snowmobile ride that made me all giddy with joy. I actually felt like a kid who has been given her favourite chocolate! Yes, Gulmarg is definitely a happy place!

There is an eating area where there are a few restaurants. We went there to have Kahwa and Kashmiri Pulao. We did not go to Phase 2 and decided to spend our time at Kongdori itself.

Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2

Boarding Station at Gulmarg gondola Phase 1

The boarding station for Phase 2 is just beside that of Phase 1. It takes another 10 -12 minutes to reach Apharwat Peak , the end point of Phase 2. The views from the peak are quite breathtaking. If you have time, you can trek to the Alpather Lake located about 5 km away. However, remember that the trail is quite steep. There are no eateries in Phase 2.

If you are planning to trek to Alpather Lake, start early and visit Phase 2 first.

The end of Phase 2 is actually not the Apharwat Peak. It is a part of Kongdoori Mountains, a shoulder of the Apharwat Peak. The top of Apharwat Peak is towards Alpather Lake and you have to trek to reach there.

Mountain peaks of kashmir

After enjoying a considerable amount of time at Phase 1, we returned back to Gulmarg. We decided to walk around a bit and finally return back to the parking area.

The ticket cost for Gulmarg Gondola Ride for phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdori) is Rs 740 for Indians and Rs 1210 for foreigners for extended duration.

The ticket cost for phase 2 is Rs 1210 Indians and Rs 1900 for foreigners.

5. Maharani Temple

Maharani Temple at Gulmarg

On our return, we stopped at the Maharani Temple. The temple, located on a small hillock is said to be the royal temple of the Dogra Dynasty. The temple was built by Maharaja Hari Singh and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is known as Maharani Temple because the queen Maharani Mohini Bai used to pray here everyday.

The priest of the temple is a Muslim. So yes, there is no religious intolerance here.

It was almost 4 PM when we returned back to the main parking area. We had a lot of fun in Gulmarg that day. We had in fact done all the touristy things that day. After all, Gulmarg is a fully tourist destination and there is a reason for the popularity of the place.

If you are staying here for the night, then there are a few more places that you can visit.

6. Strawberry Valley

This is a small area having a strawberry plantation. It is not really a valley. The plantation can only be seen in the winter months. So if you do not have much time in hand, you can easily skip this place.

Yes, Gulmarg is perfectly safe for tourists. Gulmarg is one of the main tourist destinations in Kashmir and is visited by a large number of tourists all through the year. This place is usually unaffected by the unrest that might be found in other parts of Kashmir. However, take an informed decision before visiting any place.

2 days are enough to explore the attractions in Gulmarg. There are a number of things to do in Gulmarg. One day is to explore Gulmarg and the second day is for the Gondola ride upto Phase 2. You can also visit Gulmarg as a day trip from Srinagar.

What clothes you need to carry will depend on the time you are visiting. For the winter months from December to February, carry heavy woolen, jacket, thermals, gloves, woolen socks, mufflers and windproof jackets. During the months of March and April and October carry light woolens and jackets. Between May to August, carry cotton clothes and light jackets. Gulmarg Gondola is a ropeway project started jointly by the Jammu and Kashmir Government and a French firm Pomagalski. This is considered to be Asia’s highest and longest cable car line. The entire ride consists of 2 stages – Phase 1 from Gulmarg to Kongdori and Phase 2 from Kongdori to Apharwat Peak.

There is no need to take a guide at Gulmarg. The places are all well marked and well known. Infact, there is no need for taking a guide for the Gondola ride as well, though a lot of guides will approach you. However, you can employ the services of a guide to help in their economy.

Prepaid network does not work in Kashmir and so you need to have a postpaid connection there. 3G network is available in Gulmarg around the market area and beginner slopes.  We found networks of Airtel, BSNL, Vodafone and Jio in Gulmarg. Most of the hotels provide free Wifi.

Srinagar is located about 50 km from Gulmarg. The entire road from Srinagar to Gulmarg is in an excellent condition. From Tangmarg, you start to gain altitude.

It is difficult to find snow in Gulmarg during May. The temperature rises to about 35 degrees and the snow melts. Infact, you might find only patches of snow in the second phase as well. However, it is prudent to remember that weather in mountains can change anytime.

You can buy Kashmiri handicrafts, pashmina shawls, brass items and stone jewellery and dry fruits. However, you will get all these items in Srinagar itself, where options will be more. So we recommend you to buy any souvenirs from Srinagar itself.

Most people go for the short tour of Dal Lake, however I believe if you truly want to be captivated by the Dal, take a rowboat to Char Chinar. It’s a small island in the middle of the lake. The rowboats taking around 3 hours to and from the island but it’s well worth the peaceful and beautiful journey. If you time it just right, on the way back, as the shikara head home and dusk settles in on the Dal Lake, the lights come on for an enchanting evening spectacle.

As our flight arrives late afternoon , I was wondering if it would be best to take an evening flight to Sri Nagar on the same day (30 June) so that we don't lose any time to start exploring Kashmir from the next day.

While we would like to cover the most beautiful places in Kashmir, we don't want to itinerary to be so packed that we are just rushing from one place to another without being able to fully appreciate what each place has to offer. So if we have to skip a place or two we are OK with that. Also in Srinagar I would like to take a little time to enjoy all that the city has to offer, gardens, historical monuments, floating markets, shopping, and of course the local cuisine. We would like at least a night's stay at a houseboat and do a shikara ride, enjoy a very good traditional wazwan, do a good tour if possible as we are all big foodies.

Ideally we would like to stay in a mix of four and three star accomodation in each place.

I am looking for suggestions to work out an itinerary. We are also looking for a tourguide for the whole trip with a dedicated car with driver/guide throughout the trip.

Also I have a few questions

1. Will it be raining a lot during that time?

2. Any suggestions for where we can have a really good wazwan?

3. Any place where we might be able to get some snow?

Looking forward to hearing from all the Kashmir experts.

Thank you so much.

May try Wazwan in Ahdoos / Shamiyana / Mughal Durbar.

Your dates coincide with the Amarnath Yatra. Therefore, there will be traffic restrictions in Pahalgam and Sonmarg.

Thabk you so much for your prompt response. I was wondering if the travel restrictions would be an issue for moving around and exploring those places.

Ahdoos , mughal darbar are famous restaurants where tourist flock for wazwan and are always busy locals generally visit Broadway for wazwan

As of now snow is there at gandola phase 1 n 2 and thajawas glacier as you have 10 days u may consider sinthan top for easy access to clearer snow

srinagar to gulmarg travel time

Planning a trip to Kashmir in 2nd week of July. Please help me decide on following:

We are planning to go to Gulmarg straight from Srinagar airport and CheckIn there for 1N. Next morning Gulmarg sightseeing.

Which are the must see places in Gulmarg and how much time it takes?

Doodhpathri – Is it better than Gulmarg? Can we just spent some time walking in meadows and take hired car to Shaliganga river point. We don’t want Pony ride as my husband have shoulder issues, so we want to avoid Pony rides.

What else can be seen at Doodhpathri or on way from Srinagar.

If I have to select any one between Gulamarg or Doodhpatri in July, Which one it should be?

1. Drive in morning to Pahalgam and stay One Night. Any particular spot or place to see on the way from Srinagar?

2. Next morning planning to visit Betaab Valley and Chandanwari . How long it takes to see both places in relaxed way and not much hurry. We aren’t doing Aru Valley .

3. What else is close by which can be covered with above places and return back to Srinagar by evening?

4. Pahalgam zoo is it worth going?

Please help me decide with the above.

The landscape of Doodhpathri is somewhat similar to Gulmarg, but there are no significant tourist spots apart from the river. The Pony Wallas have created some spots for their benefit.

You can visit Avantipura Ruins on the way to Pahalgam from Srinagar.

In July, tourists are allowed to visit Chandanwari after 11 a.m. for the Yatra season. It takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach Betaab Valley and Chandanwari.

Instead of visiting gulmarg for entire day if lavender bloom is already over in gulmarg go to botapathri ningnallah strawberry valley around gulmarg. Drunk waterfall is mesmerizing only when it's frozen so no point. It's not a natural fall.

While going to Pahalgam go straight as due to yatra there will be restrictions on entry times. In your return you can visit apple valley and awantipora ruins. Chandanwadi isn't recommended during yatra time as it will be littered and crowded with lot many security checks if at all its allowed for tourists as till last yr chandanwadi was close for tourists during yatra period
