2. Shettihalli Church: The Floating Church

Constructed by French missionaries in the 1860s, the church is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture in India and is among the best places to visit in Hassan. Later, in the 1960s, the Shettihalli Rosary Church was submerged in water, which is why it’s also known as The Submerged Church or The Floating Church. To redirect the waters of the Hemavathi River, the Gorur reservoir was built. This resulted in a number of villages getting submerged in water, and so the villagers had to relocate, abandoning this church. Now, the church is a sought-after picnic spot and part of Hassan’s tourism circuit. It attracts many tourists every year when it is submerged in water during the monsoon season. When Shettihalli Rosary Church is half underwater, tourists can get a closer view via a coracle ride.

How To Reach: The Shettihalli church can be easily accessed via road and railway. Buses are available for Shettihalli from  Bangalore ,  Mangalore  and  Mysore . Additionally, local buses regularly ply from Hassan’s bus station to the Shettihalli church. The bus will drop you on a road leading to the church, from there it’s a 10 min walk to reach the chapel ruins. The Mysore Junction Railway Station is the closest railway station to Hassan which is approximately 40 km from Shettihalli.

3. Hasanamba Temple: Open Only For Two Weeks During Diwali

A unique temple that is only open for two weeks during Diwali, Hasanamba Temple is dedicated to the goddess Shakti. Devotees present raw rice and light a lamp as an offering. It is believed that the lamp keeps burning and the rice never rots until the next time the temple’s doors open. The awe-inspiring architecture is a reflection of Hoysala’s faith in Jainism. Constructed in 983 CE by Chamundaraya, the general of King Rajamalla of the Ganga dynasty, Bhagwan Bahubali Statue is among the top attractions to visit in Hassan. Also known as the Gomateshwara statue, the monolith statue of Bahubali is a Jain deity that stands at a height of 17 metres. You might think, from where did the place get its name, Hassan, them let me enlighten you. The place is named Hassan as a short form for Hasanamba , the goddess that presides over the district.

From 1000 – 1334 CE , the Hassan district was famous for being the seat of the Hoysala Empire . The district is located 187 km away from Bangalore. Hassa is known for its amazing architectural prowess of temples .

Due to its old-world environment and the history of the Hoysala Empire make, the district is a major tourist attraction . If you are looking forward to visiting here, the best time would be from June to February.

1. Gorur Dam

Gorur Dam or popularly known as Hemavathi Dam , is one of the most popular places to visit in Hassan district. The dam was built in the year 1979 for irrigation and drinking purpose and household work.

The surrounding area of the dam is known to be a popular picnic spot for tourists and even locals. If you are an avid bird watcher, then you might wanna bring your binoculars here with you.

Timing: 9 am to 5 pm

How To Reach: There are KSRTC travels between Hassan and Gorur on a daily basis.

Where To Stay: The Karle, The Rappa, and The Hemavathi Resorts.

2. Shettihalli Church

This beautiful Gothic-era church was built in the 1860s and is one of the most popular places to visit in Hassan city. In the 1960s , almost a hundred years later, it was submerged underwater. This is why it is called the “ The Submerged Church or The Floating Church .”

When the Gorur Dam was built, many of the villages around the church went underwater, which is why the church was abandoned.

Timing: 6 am to 6 pm

How To Reach: There are both buses and trains available to reach the church from Bangalore, Mysore, and Mangalore. The bus drops you off about 10 mins from church. The nearest train station is about 40kms away.

3. Hasanamba Temple

This is a unique temple that only opens for two weeks each year, during Diwali. The temple is devoted to the goddess Shakti. As an offering to the goddess, each year, devotees give raw rice and a lite lamp. 

It is believed that the lamp keeps on burning, and the rice never rots till the next year when the temple opens again. One of the best features of the temple is the jaw-dropping architecture focusing on Jainism, which was the faith of the Hoysala dynasty. 

Time: 7 am to 10 pm

Entry Fee: Free. For direct darshans, it is INR 1,000, and for special entry, it is INR 300. 

How To Reach: The temple is about 1km from the main city, so take a local bus. 

Where To Stay: The Ashok, Hotel Southern Star, and Hotel Sarayu. 

4. Lakshmi Devi Temple

This yet another temple was constructed in the 12th century during the rule of the Hoysala Dynasty. This majestic temple is full of inscriptions and sculptures that are intricate and beautiful. 

For history lovers , this is perfect for them as the architecture dates back to the ancient era. The best feature of the temple is considered to be the Chatuskuta houses of four shrines . 

Timing: 9:30 am to 6 pm

How To Reach: The best transportation service is to hire a private car since there are no direct local buses to the temple.

5. Maharaja Park

The maharaja park is a well-organized theme park with lots of activities there to enjoy for the whole family. The beauty of the park is also something to look upon. With well-manicured trees, bushes, and dollops along with broad walkways.

How To Reach: It is just 2.2 km from the Hassan bus stop. From there you can get on a local bus as well.

6. Ishvara Temple

The temple is widely popular for its historical significance, intricate architecture, and rich heritage. The unique craftsmanship of the temple can be witnessed up close.

7. Bhagwan Bahubali Statue

This gigantic statue was created somewhere in 983 CE by Chamundaraya , General of the King Rajamalla from the Ganga Dynasty . The statue is also known as the Gomateshwara statue ; the bahubali is a Jain deity who was popular for its panoramic views. 

Once every 12 years, the Mahamastakabhisheka festival happens where the statue is bathed with saffron, milk, ghee, and curd. 

Timing: 8 am to 7 pm

How To Reach: The nearest train station is the Shravanabelagola and the nearest bus stand is also 1 km away.

8. Kedareshwar Temple

Built-in the 1220 CE by the Hoysala King, Veer Ballala . It is a gem that is dedicated to lord Shiva . Standing on the banks of the Narmada , the temple is built with soap rock. Intricate detailed sculptures and carvings of Shiva and Vishnu are done.

Timing: 10 am to 5 pm (Closed on Fridays)

• Belur : Belur (also known earlier as Velapuri, Velur and Belapur in olden times) is situated on the banks of Yagachi River and was one of the capitals of the Hoysala Empire. Renowned for its magnificent Hoysala temple complex, the Chennakeshava Temple (also called Vijaya Narayana Temple), which was built by Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana to commemorate his victory over the Cholas in 1116 AD. The temple is believed to have been built by master craftsmen – Dasoja and Chavana, a father and son duo. It is proposed to be listed under UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
• Halebeedu : Halebeedu (formerly known as Dwarasamudra) was the ancient capital of the Hoysalas just 17 km away from Belur. The Hoysala dynasty ruled over much of South India for close to 200 years and during this time they built spectacular temples; both Hindu as well as Jain. In the 14th century, the armies of Alauddin Khilji and Muhammad Tughlak defeated the Hoysalas and raided their empire. It is recorded that enormous wealth and riches were looted. The city never recovered and fell into neglect. In fact, Halebeedu means "old house/ old ruins". However, few temples survived this devastation like the ones in Halebeedu and today when you see them, you will be mesmerised by some the most stupendous expressions ever sculpted in stone. It is proposed to be listed under UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
• Manjarabad Fort: The Manjarabad Fort is located in Sakaleshpur and is constructed atop a hill, about 988 m above the ground-level. This fort was built by Tipu Sultan in 1792 with the aim to ward off enemy infiltrations from Mangaluru and Madikeri side. The unique aspect of this fort is that it is built in a star shaped design. It has a form with 8 angular tips stretching in 8 directions with a plus shaped well at the centre. A short climb to the top offers a scenic view of the Western Ghats with its hillocks, dense forests and valleys.
• Maharajana Durga: 14 kms from Alur town, Maharajana Durga is a hillock with a large precipitous rock. Remains of an old fort, built in octagonal shape with a pond at the center can be seen in Maharajana Durga.
• Haranahalli: Home to an 11 th century Hoysala fort now in ruins and also features a Someshwara temple.

• Bisle Ghat Trek: This is a sprawling 40-hectare reserved forest area in Sakleshpur. Surrounded by the Western Ghats, Bisle Ghat is near the border of Hassan, Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada districts. It has a scenic stretch of pristine reserve forest, mountain ranges, and trekking trails. The view from the Bisle Ghat Viewpoint is truly spectacular. There are several hillocks like Pushpagiri, Kumara Betta, Yennikallu which are ideal for trekking. Various species of flora and fauna are found here including Teak, Rosewood, Indian Copal, Tulip and Malabar Kino along with Elephants, Bison, Sambar, Wild Boar and other wild animals. The local people surrounding this region care for the rich forests here and help in its conservation. They usually help to douse out wildfires and also patrol the area for poaching and other illegal activities.
• Tea Estate Tour: While the region is known for coffee plantations, there’re a few anomalies as well. Kadamane tea estate is a rare tea estate in Hasana. The Kadamane Estate is a mini town on its own with a hospital, temple, church, a tea factory, staff quarters and main bungalow. Besides these you can see tea gardens as far as your eyes can reach.
• Coffee Plantation Visits: Particularly recommended during December where coffee is harvested and processed. Visits are often organized by homestay owners as well as private tour operators.
• Bird Watching: Bird Watching is a popular activity in multiple parts of Hasana district- particularly in forests of Sakaleshpura, in coffee plantations and in backwaters of Gorur dam.

Tourist Attractions

• Shettihalli Rosary Church: Build by the French missionaries in India during 1860s, this church is a fine example of Gothic-style architecture. The area around the church got deserted after the construction of the Gorur Dam; as during the monsoon the region got flooded and the church used to get submerged. The fact that this church remains submerged in water during monsoons makes it special as well as surreal at the same time. If you happen to visit the place during peak monsoon season, only one-third of the chapel could be visible. The view of the submerged church looks hauntingly beautiful during the monsoon. A new church has been built on higher ground nearby with edifices from this church.
• Gorur: Gorur is home to several Hoysala temples and one of the biggest reservoirs in Karnataka - Gorur Dam. At the entrance of Gorur, one can see the temple dedicated to Lord Paravasudeva. A temple dedicated to Lord Yoganarasimha is built on the banks of Hemavati River and very close to the dam. There are other lesser known temples as well in Gorur. The dam is constructed across Hemavati River, which is an important tributary of the Cauveri River. Built in 1979, the reservoir has been providing water for drinking and irrigation purposes. Hemavati Dam is very vast and covers a catchment area of 2,810 sq. km. This dam is 4,692 m long and 58.5 m high. Thus, the dam has become a popular picnic spot. A garden covered with a green lawn right next to the dam enhances the visual appeal of the place.
• Sri Rama Devara Katte, Holenarasipura: Rama devara betta, also known as Rama devara Katte in Hole Narasipura is an offbeat destination to visit while in Hasana district. This place is not to be confused with Ramadevara betta in Ramanagara district. Rama devara katte is a scenic spot where the Hemavathi river tips over a stone wall to form a mini waterfall. Water cascading over a 10 feet tall wall forms an eye catching sight.
• Jenukallu Gudda: 55 kms from Hasana, a popular hill with max height of 1389 meters
• Yagachi Dam: One of the major dams in the district, 38 kms from Hasana
• Ramanathapura: Scenic location on the banks of River Kaveri, 50 kms from Hasana. Also known as ‘Dakshina Kashi’ because of several fine temples, the oldest being Prasanna Rameshwara.
• Magajahalli Waterfalls: 20 foot high waterfall 21 kms from Sakaleshpur. Locally known as Abbi Gundi and offers a spectacular view of Pushpagiri mountain range.

Religious Places

• Hasanamba Temple: Inside the temple premises, there are three temples dedicated to Hasanamba, Darbar Ganapati and Siddeshwara. Although the Goddess has been known by the name Hasanamba, it is not a single Goddess but a trinity. The three of the Shakthi-Swaroopinis are settled together here. Another interesting feature here is the Hasanamba Temple is opened only once in a year (for few days) during Deepavali celebrations. A unique phenomenon here is that while closing the doors, the deity is adorned with flowers and a ghee lamp is lit. When the doors are reopened next year, the thick smoke engulfs the sanctum sanctorum with the lamp still burning. Even the flowers retain their freshness for the entire year.Another legend associated with this temple is of The Saptamatrikas namely Brahmi, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani and Chamundi (female counterparts/ shaktis of the male gods). On a search to find a place to settle down, they reached Hassan and were struck by its natural beauty and decided to make it their permanent home. In the three anthills inside the Hasanamba temple, Brahmi, Kaumari, and Maheshwari decided to stay. Indrani, Varahi and Vaishnavi chose the three wells in Devigere Honda (Devigere Kalyani), a lake in the immediate vicinity of Hasanamba Temple. Chamundi settled in Kenchamba’s Hosakote around 35 kms far from Hasanamba Temple.At the sanctum sanctorum, there is a small stone near the deity’s statue called Sose Kallu. It is believed to be of a woman who used to be tortured by her mother in law. During a squabble, she was hit on her forehead and got injured. Unable to bear the pain, she pleaded the Goddess to protect her. Moved by the daughter-in-law’s plea and loyalty, the Goddess, offered her a blessing to stay close to her. The daughter-in-law is said to still reside there in the form of this small stone. The stone is believed to keep moving towards the feet of the Goddess covering a distance of a paddy grain every year. It is said that the Kali Yuga will stop once the stone touches the feet of the Goddess.Another prominent attraction here is Kallappana Gudi. It is believed that long ago, four thieves tried to steal the ornaments of the temple. Goddess Hasanamba cursed and turned them into stones which can still be seen today.
• Shravanabelagola : Shravanabelagola is home to the 18 m high statue of Lord Gometeshwara; considered to be one of the world’s tallest free-standing monolithic statues. Constructed in 981 AD by Chamundaraya, a Ganga warrior, it is carved out of a single block of granite and looms atop the picturesque Vindhyagiri Hill. It is visible up to 30 km away. There are nearly 700 steps hewn in the rock-face which must be climbed to have a close-up view of this colossal magic. It is amazing to see so much grace and poise etched on a sculpture of such big scale. The statue truly reflects the idea of great strength devoid of rage and anger. This massive monolithic statue of Lord Gomateshwara will definitely leave you in awe. The surrounding enclosures has images of all the Jain Tirthankaras.
• Mosale: Mosale is a small village in Hassan which has 2 breathtaking Hoysala temples dedicated to Lord Nageshwara and Lord Chennakeshava. Built around 12th century, it is made of soapstone and are identical to each other, standing a few feet apart. Both temples have a garbhagriha, a sukanasi, a four-pillared navaranga and an entrance porch. The gable top of sukhanasa is crowned by the royal emblem of Sala (founder of the Hoysala dynasty) slaying the tiger.The Nageshwara Temple has a beautiful Nandi idol in front and a linga. The carvings include scenes of Kailash mountain with figures of various gods like Saraswati, Chamundeshwari, Natha, Sridevi, Lakshmidevi, Gauri, Maheshvari, Brahma, Sadasivamurti, Chitradhara and Bhumidevi. The Chennakeshava Temple has a beautiful idol of Lord Vishnu and the prabhavali is finely decorated with His various incarnations. Sculptures of various Gods include Garuda, Kesava, Sankarshana, Janardana, Venugopala, Aniruddha, Madhava in addition to Bhudevi, Sridevi and Chamaradharini sculptures.
• Shantigrama: Shantigrama is about 15 kms from Mosale Hosahalli and 14 kms from Hasana city. Shantigrama is famous for the temple of Sri Varada Yoga Bhoganarasimha Swamy. The temple was built in the 12th century during Chola kingdom and was renovated by Queen Shantaladevi.
• Mahalakshmi Temple, Doddagadavahalli: The temple dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi at Doddagadavahalli is credited with several firsts in Hoysala architecture. It is believed to be the first temple built in Hoysala style. This is also the only Hoysala temple where an idol of Goddess Mahalakshmi is enshrined and both Vaishnava and Shaiva ways of worship are practiced. This temple is also the only example of chatush-kuta or four-shrined order of temple built in Hoysala style. Though the temple is named after Goddess Mahalakshmi, there are shrines dedicated to Lord Mahavishnu, Lord Bhoothanatha and Goddess Mahakali.
• Kedareshwara Temple: Located nearby Hoysaleshwara Temple, this temple is a gem of Indian architecture. It is told that a tree took root in the tower and destroyed it. The outer walls, the tower and the doorway are magnificently carved. The basement of the temple, which stands on a high platform has a large number of friezes which depicts elephants, horses, lions, mythical animals, swans and stories from the Epics.
• Parshwanatha Swamy Temple, Basadihalli: It is believed that Halebeedu used to have many Jain Basadis but today only 3 remain. Situated nearby the Hoysaleshwara Temple, the Parshwanatha Swamy Temple is the most beautiful of the three basadis. There are rich carvings and 12 pillars that hold the dome of the temple. The pillars are well polished. A 14 ft figure of Lord Parshwanatha is made from black stone with a 7 headed serpent carved above the head.
• Veeranarayana Temple, Belavadi: Belavadi is home to the famous Veeranarayana Temple which is the biggest Thrikutachala (three shrined) temple built by the Hoysalas. Here, the idols of Veeranarayana, Venugopala and Yoga Narasimha are located in a single temple complex. The Venugopala idol is classified as one of the most graceful idols of all. It also houses the highest number of pillars in any Hoysala temples with around 152 of them in total; each unique from the other.
• Lakshminarasimha Temple, Javagal: One of the lesser known gems of Hoysala architecture, the Lakshminarasimha Temple, is a Vaishnava temple dedicated to Lord Narasimha ( the half man half lion incarnation of Lord Vishnu ), who is accompanied by his consort, Goddess Lakshmi. The other two shrines of this Thrikutachala temple are of Lord Vishnu and Lord Venugopal ( playing the flute ).  The outer wall here are quite fascinating and has stunning workmanship on it with carved sculptures. The Dashavatars (10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu) are exquisitely depicted here. The base has 6 rectangular moldings which has fine carvings of swans (birds), makara (aquatic creatures), epics and other stories (from Ramayana, Mahabharata and stories of Lord Krishna), leafy scrolls, horses and elephants.
• Malekal Tirupathi: Home to Venkataramanaswami temple on a hill accessible via 1700 steps.
• Kondaji: Noted for Chennakeshava temple where sculpture of main deity is four meters tall
• Holenarasipura: Home to popular Lakshmi Narasimha temple
• Basavapattana: Home to three temples- Shantishara, Lakshmikantha and Pranatharthihareshwara.

• Agrahara Belaguli: An ancient agrahara (settlement of scholarly Brahmins) and home to several ancient monuments.
• Arasikere: Known for Ishwara temple, Halavarakallu temple and a large ancient water tank

About Hassan

Being a temple architectural capital, Hassan is one of the important districts in  the Karnataka State of south India. Located at an altitude of 934 m above sea level, Hassan is a city of pleasant climate. The city was under the control of the Hoysala Dynasty from 11 th century till 14th century. The finest Shiva temples in and around Hassan was built by the Hoysala when the rulers was at the peak bringing in every place in southern India under their control. However, an earlier ruler of Hassan was the Jain. Hassan is the home town for Master Control Facility for ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) .  This credit goes to a Chieftain, Channa Krishnappa Naik .

Hassamba , the powerful Goddess resides over the temple in Hassan, which got its name from the Goddess. A fair is organized every second week of October when the Hassamba Temple is opened for devotees. The major occupation of Hassan is agriculture.  Hassan serves as a base from where the tourists can visit many other monuments.

There are lots of sightseeing to be done by tourists in and around Hassan. The splendid architecture of various temples in Belur, Shravanabelagola, Halebid, etc. are strikingly beautiful. On Aug. 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse will be visible from within a broad path sweeping from remote Russian Siberia to eastern Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon drifts in front of the sun while it's slightly larger in apparent size so that the moon completely covers the sun's disk.

Peaking at 2 minutes, 18 seconds, the Aug. 12, 2026, total solar eclipse will be the first time mainland Europe has experienced totality in the 21st century.

This large fjord system on the eastern coast of Greenland is about 68 miles (110 kilometers) long and could provide a haven of calm water and clear weather for cruise ships. Totality will take place 24 degrees above the west-southwest horizon.

Time and duration of totality: 5:48 p.m. GMT; 1 minute, 37 seconds

This geothermal spa in southwestern Iceland, located beside a geothermal power station, is close to the Sundhnukagigar volcano near Grindavík, which erupted in 2023 and 2024.

This 19th-century church is a favorite location among aurora photographers and will be busy on Aug. 12, 2026.

Head to this lighthouse and nearby Skarðsvík Beach on Iceland's Snaefellsnes Peninsula for this region's longest totality on land.

Time and duration of totality: 5:47 p.m. GMT; 1 minute, 42 seconds

This lighthouse at the extreme tip of the Reykjanes Peninsula is just a few miles from Keflavik Airport. It will be a good place to observe the behavior of seabirds.

Chance of clouds: 19% 

Just north of the centerline in eastern Spain, this city of 666,000 on the Ebro river will have plenty of hotel rooms and, unlike anywhere farther west, a view of a partially eclipsed sunset soon after totality.

Time and duration of totality: 8:32 p.m. CEST; 1 minute, 2 seconds

Chance of clouds: 31% 

Sight lines will be everything if you plan to view the eclipse from Spain's east coast. However, from Valencia's huge Malvarrosa beach, the eclipsed sun will be 4.5 degrees above the western horizon.  

Location: Mallorca, Spain

Time and duration of totality: 8:31 p.m. CEST; 1 minute, 36 seconds

Chance of clouds: 35% 

The totally eclipsed sun will hang just 3 degrees above the western horizon from Mallorca in Spain's Balearic Islands, giving the sun's corona a golden look. It's risky with clouds common on the horizon, but the views from Sant Elm of the eclipse alongside the island of Sa Dragonera could be spectacular.

Time and duration of totality: 8:26 p.m. CEST; 1 minute, 46 seconds 

Chance of clouds: 54% 

This city of 270,000 on the northern edge of the path of totality, famous for its many "sidrerías" (cider bars), will toast an eclipsed sun 10 degrees above the west-northwest horizon. 

Location: Galicia, Spain

Time and duration of totality: 8:27 p.m. CEST; 1 minute, 15 seconds

A Coruña will see the highest eclipse in Spain, 12 degrees above the west-northwest horizon. Potential viewing sites include the Roman-era Tower of Hercules —  the oldest lighthouse in the world — on a peninsula close to the city center.

Time and duration of totality: 8:29 p.m. CEST; 1 minute, 42 seconds

Chance of clouds: 23% 

The small city of Palencia (not to be confused with Valencia), which is most famous for a statue of Christ that looks down over the city, is full of beautiful architecture. The sky here is nearly dark, and in August, it will likely be clear. The eclipsed sun will sit 9 degrees above the west-northwest horizon.  

Location: Los Serranos, Valencia, Spain

Time and duration of totality: 8:31 p.m. CEST; 1 minute, 15 seconds

Chance of clouds: 16% 

The Aras de los Olmos Starlight Reserve, located in the mountains west of Valencia, is home to an observatory . It could make the ideal place to enjoy totality 5 degrees above the western horizon, watch a partially eclipsed sunset, and then see both the Milky Way and the peak of the Perseid meteor shower .

Segovia, about an hour from Madrid, is famous for its Roman-era aqueduct with more than 160 granite arches. It will offer almost a minute of totality 8 degrees above the west-northwest horizon.

Also about an hour outside Madrid, Guadalajara is known for Sigüenza Castle, Sigüenza Cathedral and the nearby Barranco del Río Dulce (Sweet River Ravine) Natural Park, where you'll find waterfalls, trails and rock formations. The eclipsed sun will sit 7 degrees above the west-northwest horizon.

Surely New York would be crawling with residents, pouring out of the skyscrapers and into the streets, or else retreating into their apartments. It’s Day One of the invasion, and the city is a ghost town.

It’s kind of a fluke that Samira agreed to come along for a field trip to a Manhattan marionette theater, led by a nurse (Alex Wolff) who should have worn quieter clothes. When the aliens land, they immediately start picking off the noisiest humans. Scream, and you’re toast. Call out for your missing partner or child, and a Death Angel is guaranteed to spring from off-screen and rip you in half. While the characters try their best to keep silent, the film’s sound designers do the opposite, using low tones to make the whole theater rumble (Imax and 4DX viewers can literally feel the attack unfolding off-screen).

In the two previous films, the thrill came from watching how characters reacted to these sinewy, double-jointed monsters, whose rattling, Venom-looking heads fold open in a series of flaps as they stop to listen. The terrifying creatures can’t see, but their sense of hearing is hyper-acute, which is why our world went quiet . For some reason, all that stuff it took humans 474 days to learn in the other movies is already known by the characters in this one (like using running water to confound the aliens).

As Samira hides out in the marionette theater with a crowd of strangers (including Djimon Hounsou, the film’s lone connection to the previous installment), military choppers fly overhead, broadcasting instructions: Keep silent. Stay off the bridges. Carefully make your way to the South Street Seaport, where ships are standing by to evacuate people. As an inexplicably small crowd of survivors move south, Samira and Frodo walk in the opposite direction. She wants that pizza.

Through it all, she remains more committed to protecting her cat — which is ironic, since the animal seems all but guaranteed to attract the wrong kind of attention. It is Frodo who finds Eric and leads him to Samira. Their instant bond feels contrived, though a more charitable viewer might be moved by this nothing-to-lose connection between two lonely souls — what writer-director Lorene Scafaria called “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.”

To his credit, Sarnoski orchestrates a few high-tension set-pieces. But there aren’t nearly enough of these for a movie set in the “Quiet Place” world, as Sarnoski (who put Nicolas Cage through all kinds of nonsensical behavior in “Pig”) winds up putting sentimentality ahead of suspense.

Just compare these movies to the century’s best zombie franchise: “A Quiet Place” ranks up there with “28 Days Later” in its immersive, world-turned-upside-down intrigue. “Part II” was bigger and scarier, à la “28 Weeks Later.” “Day One” ought to have been the mind-blowing origin story, and instead it’s a Hallmark movie, where everyone seems to have nine lives — not just that darn cat.

When the next presidential debate of 2024 takes place and who will moderate it

President Biden and former President Donald Trump have agreed to one more showdown on the debate stage before the 2024 presidential election . 

The September rematch will come after both candidates formally accept their party's nomination. The first debate , hosted Thursday by CNN in Atlanta, came unusually early in the election season given that both are still the presumptive nominees before their party conventions. 

When is the second presidential debate?

ABC News will host the second debate between President Biden and Donald Trump on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. 

Who will moderate the next debate?

ABC News has yet to announce the moderators of the second debate. 

The qualifications are similar to the first debate, making it unlikely that non-major party candidates will meet the ballot access and polling requirements to earn a spot on stage. 

Candidates need to earn at least 15% support in four approved national polls and be on the ballot in enough  states to be able to win 270 votes  in the Electoral College — the threshold to win the presidency. 

How many more debates will there be for 2024?

There are no more presidential debates scheduled before the election. Mr. Biden and Trump agreed to only two debates — one hosted by CNN and the other by ABC News. 

They are bypassing the tradition of three meetings organized by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, which has overseen presidential debates since 1988. The commission's three debates were scheduled to take place in September and October at universities in Texas, Virginia and Utah. This year's debates were agreed upon without any involvement by the commission. 

The commission met with sharp criticism by both Trump — who has accused the commission of being biased against Republicans — and by close advisers to Mr. Biden who view commission procedures as outmoded and fussy. The co-chair of the commission, Frank Fahrenkopf, told CBS News' podcast "The Takeout" that top White House communications adviser Anita Dunn "doesn't like us," and he said on a Politico podcast that this was the reason Mr. Biden's team went around the commission to negotiate directly with Trump's campaign.

CBS News invited both campaigns to participate in a vice presidential debate on either July 23 or Aug. 13, which the Biden campaign accepted. Trump has yet to name a running mate.
