To help you plan ahead, we’ve rounded up 10 of the best tours to book in Port Douglas.

With its vast tracts of rainforest and reef, it isn’t hard to see why the pretty seaside village of Port Douglas is a popular spot for a holiday. Looking for inspiration? Cast your gaze to our list of tours to book when in Tropical North Queensland, from Port Douglas reef tours to cultural Dreamtime walks and hardcore rainforest hikes.

Don’t miss: Where to find the best Port Douglas swimming spots

Sailaway to Mackay Coral Cay

The quintessential thing to do while in Port Douglas is enjoy a reef tour. Sailaway to the Great Barrier Reef on a full-day reef sailing tour led by qualified marine biologists who will take you to a quiet corner of the outer reef and seek out coral gardens you can explore at your own pace. Sail to stunning Mackay Coral Cay onboard the luxury catamaran and step off the powder-white sand into an underwater garden where you will see vibrant corals, giant clams, turtles and abundant fish life. This Port Douglas reef tour focuses on small groups, which means the snorkelling can be somewhat tailored to individual needs.

Paddle-board near Port Douglas

You’ll find plenty of places to paddleboard around Port Douglas. But there’s something about paddleboarding along the peaceful Mossman River that makes the sport feel more meditative. The Windswell Port Douglas paddleboarding tour screams ‘memorable family activity’ or ‘girls’ own adventure’ and is one of the most ecologically sensitive ways to explore the scenic waterway. Drifting downstream under the tangled limbs of giant strangler fig trees is a thoughtful exercise, as is doing on-board yoga followed by a tropical fruit tasting and refreshing dip in the river, located in Kuku Yalanji Country. There’s also a rope swing for big and little kids.

Enjoy a sunset sail

The beauty of Port Douglas and Tropical North Queensland really unfolds from the water. Set sail with Indigo Charters , one of the region’s most elegant yachts, for a two-hour sunset cruise where you can admire the long, white beaches of Port Douglas, the blue and green seas, rainbow-coloured reefs and soft, verdant landscapes. In addition to the sunset cruise, Indigo Charters can tailor an experience to suit: from swimming with the turtles at Low Isles to playing with dolphins at Brampton Island and a full-day sailing and snorkelling expedition that includes a sunset sail on the way home. BYO alcoholic drinks and toast the sunset.

Take a cultural walk into the rainforest

Join one of the elders from the Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre on Mossman Gorge Dreamtime Walks to learn about the history of the Kuku Yalanji First Nations people. Spend an hour or two with one of the Indigenous guides and you will tap into knowledge that is thousands of years old as the tour meanders around culturally significant sites and over cool rainforest streams that ribbon around Mossman Gorge. As well as providing a poetic narrative about the natural environment, the guides thread together practical demonstrations such as how to make bush soaps and identify native food sources. The tour finishes with bush tea and damper.

Explore a hidden cloud forest

Embark on a hardcore hike with Back Country Bliss up to the top of the aptly named Devils Thumb hike, an enormous boulder-sized digit overhanging the rainforest. The challenging tour is for Amazonian types who are up for the challenge of hiking the 10-kilometre return track that features this spectacular granite rock formation, Devils Thumb (Manjal Jimalji), at its halfway point. Nature lovers will enjoy traversing through a variety of terrain along the track which starts off hugging Cabin Creek before looping into lowland rainforest that leads to a clearing carpeted in pretty coral ferns. High-five your mates when you get to the top of the rock to enjoy unimaginably excellent views over the Daintree and Coral Sea.

See the Daintree National Park on a small-group luxury tour

Enjoy the glittering emerald panorama of the Daintree Rainforest and kaleidoscopic colours of the Great Barrier Reef on a small-group luxury package with Daintree Tours . The Reef & Rainforest package includes a full day tour that visits three outer reef snorkelling sites in the shimmering Coral Sea, as well as a rainforest tour that loops in Mossman Gorge, and includes wildlife and crocodile spotting along the way. In addition to the Daintree Tours, which includes interpretative rainforest walks, secluded lunch sites, and a crocodile-spotting river cruise, Daintree Tours designs custom itineraries that will align with individual interests.

Get a taste of Port on a Plate

From farm-fresh tropical fruit, to stellar cafes, restaurants and ice creameries , Port Douglas is paradise for people who love their food and wine. What makes gourmands’ heart’s sing is not just the farm-to-fork movement, which has been a way of life up here for decades, or the sunny cafes and farmers’ markets, it’s intimate foodie tours such as Port on a Plate , which is a half-day epicurean adventure that collects ingredients at the farmgate to use in a three-course BBQ lunch cooked by your very own private chef and tour guide. The tour includes a chocolate tasting, tropical fruit wine tasting, visit to a barramundi farm and private lunch in an orchard.

Swim with dwarf minke whales

The Port Douglas-based Silversonic whisks visitors out to the Outer Reef while trying to leave as few footprints as possible. Glide through the silvery seas onboard the 29-metre fast aluminium catamaran to get views of the coastline cloaked in dense rainforest and the underwater wonder that is the Great Barrier Reef. The Silversonic Port Douglas Dive & Snorkel Adventures tour departs daily bound for the Agincourt ribbon reefs where passengers can snorkel or dive in the deep blue waters which are filled with marine life and colourful corals. The boat has an exclusive permit to swim with dwarf minke whales if encountered during their migration along Australia’s east coast between June and August.

Get Scuba Certified in Port Douglas

The advantage of getting your PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certification in Tropical North Queensland is that you can put it to good use on a tour of the reefs off Port Douglas. The three-to-four-day Quicksilver Dive course starts in the purpose-built dive training centre in Port Douglas where your time will be divided between the classroom and the heated dive pool. Once you’ve progressed to a certain level, you will complete your PADI training in the warm waters of the Great Barrier Reef. After your course, you are certified to dive anywhere on earth up to a depth of 18 metres.

Learn Indigenous painting techniques

Artist Brian ‘Binna’ Swindley of the Janbal Gallery in Mossman sees art as a universal language to communicate and connect with people about his culture. The gallery is open to visitors who are interested in purchasing local Aboriginal art. It’s also open to those who are interested in learning Indigenous painting techniques as Binna draws on his heritage to tell stories that relate to his Kuku Yalanji heritage and culture. Find inspiration to paint your own canvas using a palette of colours inspired by the Tropical North Queenlsand landscape, to which Binna has strong ancestral ties to or sign up for a boomerang workshop to bring home your own bespoke souvenir.

  • Matthew H 2 contributions 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles Family of four fantastic snorkeling day trip. We had a fantastic day snorkelling with abc. Three members of our family were anxious at the start of the trip, but by the end of the trip all three said they loved the snorkeling out on the reef. The crew are great, they give you lots of information about the reef and the marine life while travelling on the boat and are in the water with you giving you more information and assistance if needed. Being a small group of people on the boat you get plenty of laughs. If back in Port Douglas we would book another trip with abc. Thanks Jason, Callum and Sam. What people love about port douglas tours.

6 days Cairns & Port Douglas Tour was consisting of 6 independent Tours with all different participants. The tour was well organized and the representavive person informed us every night by WhatsApp message about next day tour, hotel or city transfer. The selection of food when offered was good. Although no one meet us in person from Tour Agency, we had a well organized tour provided by local Tours. It was an interesting experience.
Overall, this trip was a dream come true to mystical magical places around Australia!!! Only blips were on the hotels not the tour operator.
I'm in my 60s...this tour was a mix of comfortable accommodation and enjoyable light activities. It was a small group of like minded people. We loved it !!

INTRO Travel

"The Oz east coast trip with Intro is an amazing way to explore the entire east coast trip fast! It is well organised and as described, with the option to do extra activities along the way too. My leader was Molly who has fantastic. She got the group to each destination safe and sound, without any hassle, and with lots of laughs! She also was extremely knowledgeable about each destination we went to and about the general Aussie culture. She was extremely approachable to any queries that you had and gave me lots of tips and advice for working in OZ after! It is also a great way to make lifelong friends and travel safely. I would definitely recommend. I would also suggest bringing a suitcase or wheely backpack as it is much easier to travel with. 😊

"I really liked the itinerary, it was varied with some active days like the hike to Hells gate and back. Other days we could do our own thing which was great. Most of the hostels were to be expected, however the one in Airlie Beach was awfully dirty and lacking basic things such as lockers and safes. Apart from that, I enjoyed the trip!

"Guide was great - friendly, organised, knowledgeable. Back office support was really bad eg. not contacting hotels in previous 3 weeks so hotels didn't know how many were arriving. Taking weeks to confirm if they could provide a single room for a traveller.

About Port Douglas Tours

Port douglas.

Four Mile Beach Port Douglas Australia

Positioned between Cairns and the Daintree Rainforest on the coast, Port Douglas is an ideal starting point for exploring the region. Daily tours depart from the village, providing various options for experiencing the Great Barrier Reef and Rainforest.

Crystalbrook Marina is the departure point for Great Barrier Reef tours, with the sites visited considered among the best and most pristine in Australia. You can choose to visit the Low Isles on a stunning sailboat or take a luxury yacht to the outer reef. With options to dive, snorkel, swim, or paddle, the choice is entirely yours.

Daily day tours to the Daintree Rainforest also depart from Port Douglas. You can relax and explore the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation on a comfortable guided tour.

Port Douglas Reef Tours

Port Douglas Tours Wavedancer Low Island

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is an expansive network of more than 2,900 individual reefs that stretch from Cape York in the north to Lady Elliott Island in the south. Covering a staggering 348,000 km2, this marine park is home to a wide variety of fringing and barrier reefs, continental islands, coral cays, and 70 distinct bio-regions, making it the most diverse ecosystem on the planet. Port Douglas is particularly renowned for its beautiful coral cays and islands, as well as its close proximity to some of the most breathtaking outer edge reefs.

Whether you're a seasoned swimmer or a non-swimmer, young or old, there's a way for everyone to marvel at the stunning beauty of the Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas. With a variety of tour options available, it's easy to find a way to experience the reef that's perfect for you. Don't miss out on the chance to witness this natural wonder up close.

Daintree Rainforest & Cape Trib

Daintree Rainforest & Cape Trib

A very beauitful and special part of the world, the Daintree is certainly not to be missed. This remote area is situated north of Port Douglas and has the largest continuous area of tropical rainforest on the Australian continent. Along the coastline north of the Daintree River, the tropical rainforest grows right down to the edge of the sea where fringing reef is met on the shoreline, this is commonly referred to as 'where the Rainforest meets the Reef'.`

Getting there is all part of the adventure. You can either take a fully guided 4WD Safari, or choose to self drive and explore this pretty region at your own leisurely pace. The journey to the Daintree travels along the Cook Highway north of Port Douglas and features beautiful scenery ranging from secluded palm fringed tropical beaches, hidden coves and rugged headlands to the rich green of lush sugar-cane fields and rainforest covered mountains.

The Daintree River ferry is the gateway to the Daintree Coast and Cape Tribulation, and is the only cable ferry operating within tropical Australia.

Once over the river there are many natural attractions to visit including rainforest walks, freshwater swimming holes and remote beaches. There are also plenty of adventure activities that take place such as sea kayaking, horse riding, jungle surfing, snorkelling, night walks and more.

Guided tours depart daily from Port Douglas, and there are plenty of accommodation options should you wish to stay longer and immerse yourself in the rainforest experience. Our consultants would be more than happy to help tailor a unique rainforest package to suit.

Port Douglas Attractions

Explore the rainforest on elevated walkways at Mossman Gorge, Experience a day trip to Kuranda, Go croc spotting on a Daintree River cruise, meet some local wildlife at Hartley’s or Wildlife Habitat. Kuranda Train & Skyrail

Kuranda Train & Skyrail

The Kuranda Train & Skyrail is one of the most sought after trips in Far North Queensland. The journey to and from Kuranda Village offers two very different experiences combining, history, heritage, rainforest and environment. Kuranda Village has been operating as a tourist destination since the 1970's with the famous Kuranda Markets being the drawcard, and which are still drawing visitors today.

The first operation of the Kuranda Train commenced in 1936 and the Skyrail Cableway, a world first for viewing the rainforest in a safe and environmentally way, commenced operation in 1995.

Time spent in Kuranda Village will allow you to explore the variety of market stalls inside the Original Markets and Heritage Markets, take a rainforest walk or enter the various wildlife attractions within the village.

There are also options to add on various elements to your day including Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, Rainforestation, Birdworld, Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Kuranda Koala Gardens or Hartleys Croc Park.

Climate & Seasons

port douglas best tours

Port Douglas has a tropical climate with hot summers and warm winters. Between the months of November to May our temperatures are warm to hot with high humidity.Perfect Weather at Low Island

Our rainfall peaks in the months of Feb, March and April, with the wettest month of the year typically being February. Although its wet, it brings relief from the humidity and the rainforests are just spectacular with waterfalls in full flow.

Our winter months are generally dry and clear and a popular time for visitors as we are enjoying warmer weather than most other parts of the country.

Mossman Gorge Guide

As we are a destination renowned for World Heritage Listed Rainforest, no journey to Cairns would be complete without a rainforest experience. Travelling north up the scenic Cook Highway is the Daintree National Park which comprises of two sections - Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation, covering an expanse of more than 1,200 sq km.

Mossman Gorge is renowned for its crystal-clear waters that cascade over granite boulders, Indigenous culture and spectacular rainforest walks. Most tour itineraries include a visit to Mossman Gorge.

Beyond Mossman is the Daintree River, famous for its boat cruises, croc spotting and bird watching. Once across the Daintree River the Cape Tribulation section of Daintree National Park then stretches from Cow Bay to the Bloomfield River, covering 17,000 ha of coastal range.

Cape Trib beach is fringed with the increasingly rare littoral (beachside) rainforest and interesting fringing reefs, and is renowned as the place where where two spectacular World Heritage sites meet - the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.

This area of rainforest is a hive of activity from bush walking, kayaking and horse riding treks to snorkelling, exotic fruit tastings and 4WD safaris. Accommodation is readily available, and it is highly recommend to spend at least one night in the rainforest to experience the closeness of nature and the wonders of this ancient land.

Self Drive Port Douglas

port douglas best tours

Port Douglas is a spectacular one hour drive north of Cairns along one of the most scenic coastal roads in Australia, featuring amazing views of rainforest covered mountains on one side, and the Coral Sea on the other.

Rex Lookout is one of many highlights along the way with views along the ranges back towards Cairns. Hiring a car gives you the freedom to explore the region at your own pace and go wherever your heart desires.

You can visit all the best attractions at your own leisurely pace, or explore further afield in our surrounding regional areas such as the Atherton Tablelands, Daintree & Cooktown. Most roads are sealed, so unless you are planning to go to Cooktown via the Bloomfield Track, you will not need a 4WD.

If hiring a car it is possible to make your own way to our various attractions around the region. Kuranda is approx a 1 hour drive south from Port Douglas, and up the Kuranda Range, however if you don't want to miss out on the Train & Skyrail experience then we can organise a bus transfer to return you to your vehicle at the end of the day, as the Skyrail Terminal and Kuranda Train Station are in two seperate locations.

Wildlife Habitat at Port Douglas makes for a lovely half day out for the family, especially if you add on the Breakfast with the Birds. Afterwards wander off breakfast around the park, then perhaps enjoy an afternoon of shopping along Macrossan Street.

A visit to Mossman Gorge is a must, and the kids will love Hartleys Crocodile Adventures located just 25 minutes from Port Douglas on the Cook Highway. You can arrive at anytime of the day to the wildlife & national parks.

Great Barrier Reef

A remarkable example of natural beauty and the only living structure on Earth that can be seen from space, the Great Barrier Reef is a masterpiece of Mother Nature.

If there’s one thing that we can all agree on, it’s that the Great Barrier Reef is undoubtedly one of the most phenomenal natural wonders of our world. Comprising over 3,000 individual reefs along the Queensland coastline spanning almost 350,000 square kilometres, the Great Barrier Reef is almost the size of 70 MILLION football fields. And as it’s also the only living thing on the planet that can be seen from outer space, that makes the Great Barrier Reef total bucket list material.

In this underwater wonderland, you will discover endless varieties of corals in every conceivable colour, shape and form that remind you of mythical underwater cities. Swim amongst the schools of fish and other marine life flashing by. Giant clams to small shells, starfish and sea cucumbers, anemones, green sea turtles, eels, rays, sponges – your senses will go into overdrive with everything there is to see on the spectacular Great Barrier Reef.

Trips to the Great Barrier Reef depart from both Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation and cater for all age groups and water abilities in full and half-day tours. Whether you’re a pro scuba diver or are just longing to find Nemo, discovering the utter magic of the underwater world is a memory that will stay with you forever. Go to a pontoon or multiple sites, enjoy 'dry' options of glass-bottomed boats and semi-submersibles. Sail or motor your way there, it's up to you. Which way will you discover it?

Grab your snorkel and fins – everyone knows it’s better where it’s wetter! Plan the very best Great Barrier Reef trip that suits you. Sign up to our newsletter here for all the up-to-date local information and holiday deals to get you out on the reef.

Best Time Of Year To Visit The Reef

snorkeling on the reef

Port Douglas offers a fantastic getaway throughout the year, thanks to its warm tropical climate and a variety of outdoor activities. The region experiences two distinct seasons: the 'wet' and the 'dry', which are often referred to as the 'green' and the 'dry' due to the lush rainforests that surround the area. Don't be discouraged by the 'green season,' as it has its own unique beauty.

The Green Season | December - April The green season typically begins with the first monsoonal rains in December and lasts until April. During this period, 75 to 90% of the annual rainfall occurs, accompanied by high humidity. Average temperatures range from 24°C to 33°C (75°F to 91°F).

The green season is a dramatic and stunning time when the flora and fauna of the tropical rainforests come alive. The rainfall is vital for the rainforest's existence. This period is particularly exciting for nature lovers and photographers as the tropics are at their most beautiful, with waterfalls flowing abundantly.

Great Barrier Reef tours welcome the gentle winds at this time of year. You are more likely to experience a “glass out conditions” in the green season due to the low winds. Glass out conditions offer optimal visibility and make for ideal snorkelling & diving on the reef. The calm waters allow for clear views of the underwater world, making it easier to spot marine life, admire vibrant corals, and appreciate the reef's beauty in its full glory.

The Dry season | May to November The dry season, from May to November, brings lower humidity, clear skies, and pleasant temperatures both day and night. Average winter temperatures range from 19°C to 24°C (66°F to 75°F). Less chance of rain gives visitors more options when planning a Reef Tour. You might even spot whales during their migration on your way to and from the reef.

This period corresponds to the peak tourist season, attracting visitors seeking a respite from the colder southern states. Families, especially during school holidays, are advised to book tour to the reef in advance as we have up to 50% more visitors during this time of year.

We had a lovely day out on the cat, Food was good Just poor visibility of the coral and fish , a little disappointing . Would recommend to go to the reef if you really want to snorkel.

Geoffrey Dale

Great crew, looked after everybody extremely well, brilliant day out!

Ryan Turner

I had a great time on the Poseidon. The thing that stood out to me most was the excellent staff. They were incredibly friendly, funny, helpful, knowledgable, and fun to be around. The gear they give you is great, the spots they take you to are beautiful (not too much bleaching), and the food is tasty. I went on a day when the boat was at less than half capacity (only 30-something passengers) so it made for easy communication between crew and passengers along with short food and drink lines. I definitely recommend the Poseidon Cruise.

Maxine Schofield

We had a fab day the 4 grandchildren were just amazed at the experience have not stopped talking about the swim the dive the fish etc
One of the best experiences of my life. The snorkelling was sensational. The small number of people on the boat made this trip very special, we had personal interaction with Steve and Charlotte. The lunch on board was fabulous. Loved the sail home! Good short tour around the island. A very special day!

Bernard Doughty

Need to be active and fit with good swimming to get best from visit by snorkelling. Sub was very good as was underwater view. Buffet was good but a bit rushed. Too much hard sell on trip. Take lycra suit option for water.

Bronwyn Rayner

A great day out despite the rocky waves. Great to have a marine biologist aboard. Lunch was very good. Staff were caring when I threw up!
