The Black Canyon Trail has long been a must-ride route for bikepackers on the hunt for uninterrupted singletrack. Logistically speaking, the BCT is typically done via shuttle; and shuttling is generally convenient from Phoenix’s city centre, as well as from Flagstaff. However, for those looking for a longer trip, or to ride the BCT without the challenges of organizing a shuttle, this is it. The Fools Loop starts and finishes in downtown Phoenix, close to amenities and the airport for those flying in. Made up of urban paths, flowy singletrack, and rugged forest service roads, the loop takes in some other excellent trails and sights along the way.

Following chunky and unforgiving service roads through Tonto National Forest and singletrack along the BCT, this route passes through countless saguaro forests, rugged canyons, and rolling desert plains that are sure to impress visitors and Arizona locals alike.

The Fool's Loop, Gravel Bikepacking Route, Arizona

The Fool’s Loop starts off by navigating through the sprawling city of Phoenix, following urban pathways and canal trails, passing through city green spaces like the Tempe Beach Park, Grand Canal and the Central Arizona Canal. After a quick stop in North Scottsdale for a late breakfast or lunch, the route quickly changes directions by introducing the popular singletrack within Brown’s Ranch Trailhead and a section of the newly developed Maricopa Trail. Within this trail system, there are endless options to tag on a longer day of trail riding if you so desire.

The Fool's Loop, Gravel Bikepacking Route, Arizona

The eastern edge of the Fool’s Loop travels through the beautiful Tonto National Forest, following rough gravel service roads lined with saguaro cacti. After leaving Tonto, the route traverses across to the northern end of the infamous Black Canyon Trail, one of the longest continuous singletrack trails in Arizona. The trail leads south past Black Canyon City and New River before meandering back into the city of Phoenix, which likely involves the taste of cold beer and a good meal for most.

Route Development: The Fool’s Loop was stitched together with help from Ray Hemmele of the Arizona Bikepacking community and Erick Cedeño, the owner of Bicycle Nomad . In February 2021, we worked with John Schilling on a major update to the route—cleaning up a few sections and adding the Northern terminus of the Black Canyon Trail into the route. The “Tonto” of Tonto National Forest translates to “stupid” or “crazy”, which describes some of the looks passersby gave me on some of the more remote sections. The conditions are most often very rugged, loose, and rocky, and are most comfortably ridden on a hardtail or full-suspension mountain bike.

Trail Notes

  • Tonto National Forest is home to a wealth of remote and rugged forest service roads that provide fantastic views of valleys and mountains in the distance.
  • Start and finish in downtown Phoenix with access to Sky Harbor Airport, Airbnbs, Warmshowers hosts, bike shops, and great food.
  • A great mix of paved roads, rough gravel, big climbs, and huge sections of flowy singletrack.
  • A loop that integrates the Black Canyon Trail, which can be comfortably ridden on a hardtail or gravel bike with decent sized tires.
  • Brown’s Ranch Trailhead and Cathedral Rock make for a fantastic day of mellow singletrack leaving the city.
  • Massive and vibrant murals of downtown Phoenix scattered through the Arts District and Roosevelt Row.
  • Similar to other routes in the area , the Fool’s Loop can be ridden all year long, but the winter months will offer more reasonable daily highs and chilly nights.
  • Locals also suggest not riding the route from June to September due to lack of water and potentially dangerous daytime temperatures.
  • I rode the loop in November and felt this would be one of the most ideal times to ride. Early spring (February/March/April, depending on the winter) would be rewarding too, with a dazzling show of desert blooms.
  • The route passes through an Arizona State Land Trust (section by the Cave Buttes Recreation Area) which requires a permit to travel through. Permits can be purchased online here for $15 .
  • The route starts and ends at the 44th St Sky Train station, which is bike-friendly and provides direct transportation to and from Sky Harbor International Airport.
  • There isn’t much in Tonto National Forest besides cacti and a few water sources , you’ll want to have at least two days of food, plenty of water storage, and a way to purify dirty water.
  • The western side of the loop , heading south, is less remote than the Tonto side and there are nicely spaced resupply points listed on the map.
  • Levels along the Agua Fria have posed an issue to riders during periods of high water, but provide a source of water. On the other hand, these water sources were completely dry when I rode it so crossing wasn’t an issue, but finding water was. Do some research before you go.
  • Bring bright colored clothes and a blinkie light for the bits on the road and in the city.
  • Check out AirBnb.com and WarmShowers.org for cheap accommodations in Phoenix.
  • Horseshoe Campground in Tonto National Forest by the Horseshoe Lake Reservoir.
  • Sheeps Crossing Campground is just 22km North of Horseshoe.
  • Dispersed camping options between Sheeps Crossing and Cordes Junction.
  • 50’s Diner & Motel in Cordes Junction.
  • Bumble Bee Ranch and plenty of other dispersed camping options along the Black Canyon Trail.
  • Lodging in Black Canyon City.
  • Plenty of stores on the ride out of Phoenix , but North Scottsdale is one of the last resupply points before entering Tonto. There is a grocery store, great lunch spots, and a bike shop here.
  • Water access at both Horseshoe Campground and Sheeps Crossing, but will need treatment.
  • No reliable water or food between Sheeps Crossing and Cordes Junction, so plan accordingly.
  • Big breakfast at the 50’s Diner & Motel in Cordes Junction . Also a 24/7 McDonalds if you show up late.
  • Gas Station in Spring Valley is well stocked.
  • Market in Black Canyon City as well as the Rock Springs Café just down the road for lunch, baked goods, and pie.
  • Yes, there is a good chunk of pavement and some city riding , but in the case of this loop, it adds to the experience and makes it a great loop for drop bar mountain bikes, hardtails, and full-suspension mountain bikes. I would not ride this route on anything smaller than a 2.2″ tire.
  • Camp relatively near water when possible (but not too close). Even in the winter months some of the water sources can be dried up, so some flexibility along the route will keep you out of potentially sticky situations.
  • Tubeless is a must. The area is known for being riddled with cacti and therefore stray thorns are hard to see and will cause flats all day long. Check out our article on traveling tubeless .
  • Expect some long climbs and maybe a bit of pushing out of Bloody Basin. I was very close to running out of water along this stretch.
  • Black Canyon Trail is a super fun ride, but there are also plenty of gravel service roads that run parallel to it should the riding be a bit much for your drop-bar bike.

eBIKE DESTINATIONS TOUR | SEASON TWO

Phoenix, arizona, the ultimate winter ebike location.

Back for a second season, our eMTB Destination Tour seeks to give viewers insight to some eBike friendly locations that we think should make it on your road trip hit list. Whether you’re looking for the best eMTB trails we can find, a little weekend trip with the family or an epic winter getaway with your crew, we hope these episodes will offer some well-rounded looks at some of the best eMTB trails and the communities around them.

For 2023 we were lucky enough to hook up with some amazing partners to keep the gas tank full, burritos in our bellies and keep the camera guy paid. Without their support, these types of projects wouldn’t be possible, so we’d like to extend a huge thank you to Pivot Cycles, Endura Clothing, ABUS helmets and bike locks and Maxxis Tires.

With Pivot Cycles being our title sponsor it only made sense for us to pick up our enduro-ready Shuttle LT eBikes in person and hit some of our favorite trails on South Mountain in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe, Arizona. The city of year round sun is home to Pivot Cycles and after a long, cold winter beat down, some fun in the sun was exactly what we needed. With over one million inhabitants it’ll come as no surprise that there’s a lot to do off the bike, but the close proximity of South Mountain and a number of other spots located nearby makes Phoenix, and Tempe more specifically, an excellent destination to ride a mountain or e-mountain bike too. If the riding at South Mountain and other local networks isn’t enough to keep you entertained, nearby Mesa, AZ has a growing network of awesome trails and the world famous trails and views of Sedona are

Phoenix is a fast-growing city of around 1.6 million inhabitants located in the center of Arizona, in the south west of the U.S, forming the primary population of the Valley Of The Sun. This makes it the fifth most populated city in the United States, and it packs a metropolitan area with nearly five million people making it the most populated and widest spread city in Arizona. Surrounding this huge metropolitan sprawl are a series of low mountain ranges in each direction, and within the city boundaries are a number of isolated peaks.

Up until the 1940’s the primary driver of the economy was agriculture, with the “Five C’s” (Cotton, cattle, citrus, climate, and copper) forming the backbone of the area’s revenue. Since then, Phoenix and the surrounding areas became a hot spot for the tech sector, with multiple company headquarters and major manufacturing plants moving to the area, and the city has had a thriving tourism industry since the 1920’s which now amounts to over 19 million visitors per year.

Located within the Sonoran Desert, Phoenix has a hot desert climate with extremely high temperatures sustained from June through to September, and very mild winters. Rainfall is consistently low, making for dry trail conditions most of the year, so the prime riding season extends from October through to May, with Summer being too hot for most.

ACCOMMODATION

As a major city with so many tourists visiting, it’ll come as no surprise that there is no shortage of options for places to stay in Phoenix, with thousands of hotel rooms and Airbnbs to choose from. That said, in this widely spread city you can be left with a significant drive to visit certain locations, so the priorities for your trip should dictate the area in which you stay.

For our stay, we opted to seek out an Airbnb that would be located close to the South Mountain area with its large trail network, so that we had the most direct access to the extensive eMTB trail network. We found a property in an excellent location that fitted our needs perfectly – the Ahwatukee Foothills Escape Property hosted by Vanessa Roark is less than a two minute pedal to two different trailheads in the South Mountain Complex. This comfortable and spacious home provided us with the perfect base to rest and recoup in between our long days riding and filming. For mountain bikers and hikers visiting the area it’s an excellent option to provide quick access to the trails and close enough drive to some restaurants and activites.

The primary focus for our time in Phoenix was the huge South Mountain trail area, sitting on the south side of the city. With over 100 miles of trail nestled in the 16,000+ acre area, South Mountain is a great location for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking, and most importantly for us, legal and excellent for riding electric mountain bikes.

The riding area on South Mountain tops out at roughly 2,500ft, with around 1,400ft of vertical descent available down to the flats below. Spanning most of the length of the riding area is the National Trail, a 13-mile long two-way trail with a wide variety of terrain from green graded flowy singletrack to some very gnarly rock gardens and exposed sections. To ride this out-and-back would involve 26 miles covered with 3,300ft of elevation change and some very challenging sections along the way. The National Trail can also be used to link up most of the other trails on South Mountain, which vary all the way from green and blue graded trails for all abilities up to some seriously technical and challenging double black diamond trails for advanced level riders.

Pivot Cycles played a major part in opening up the area to eMTBs. Every mountain bike that Pivot Cycles has developed has seen test miles at South Mountain, and that includes their Shuttle eMTB line. It was critically important that when discussions began around eMTB access at South Mountain, the governing bodies understood the full spectrum of what that meant. “We had a vested interest in making sure it happened,” said Ben Webster, Pivot’s Production Line Manage. From supplying intel, opinions and funding as well as lots of man-hours to do trail maintenance, South Mountain, and especially the National Trail’s great condition are largely due to Pivot’s influence.

For riders who also bring a non-eBike with them, there are some amazing locations that are also worth a visit nearby. In neighboring Mesa, Arizona the Hawes Trail offers some amazing speed, flow and fun. Of course no trip to the Southwest would be complete without a stop in the stunning red rocks of Sedona, which is a couple of hours to the north. South Mountain can of course be ridden on an acoustic bike too, though we’d highly recommend an eMTB to take the edge off some of the more challenging sections of climb and maximize enjoyment of more descents, especially in the warmer months.

OFF THE BIKE

The big city of Phoenix has lots of options to entertain visitors off the bike. Golf is a major attraction in the area, with over 200 golf courses to choose from and frequent competitions in the area. Family-friendly activity highlights include the impressive Desert Botanical Gardens and the Phoenix Zoo, which are conveniently located in close proximity to one another for a fun two-activity trip.

Dining options are seemingly endless, and there’s an energetic nightlife with many bars and clubs to choose from. During our stay we hunted out what TV hosts had labeled as the “Best pizza in the world”, sampling the award winning Pizza Bianca and Chris Cocalis’s choice of the Chicago-style pies at Lou Malnati’s. We’re not convinced that either topped the excellent A Dopo from our Knoxville, TN stop of our 2022 eMTB Destinations tour , but they were both enjoyed regardless to refuel after our long days in the saddle.

Outside of Phoenix itself are a long list of attractions nearby, from national monuments and castles through to National Forests. Phoenix is a great base location from which to visit the Grand Canyon, Lake Havasu and the Petrified Forest amongst many others, which are all around three hours away.

It’s safe to say that Phoenix is an excellent destination to visit whether you ride eMTBs or not, and the excellent eBike-friendly trail network on South Mountain makes it even sweeter.

We’d like to thank Pivot Cycles , Endura , ABUS and Maxxis Tires for making our 2023 eMTB Destination Tour series possible and allowing us to help share eBike friendly locations to our readers. After having traveled long distances only to arrive and find out that eBikes are not welcome, we wanted to do what we could to prevent others from similar frustrations. Hope to catch you on the highways or the trails.

If you’d like to see us visit and share more places, please leave a comment or suggestion so we can keep this series going.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

Phoenix is the capital city of Arizona and is located in the central region of the state. People may know it for its year-round sun, desert beauty, and world-class resorts and golf, but as the fifth-largest city in the U.S., it also offers sophisticated urbanscapes, southwest culture and lots of outdoor adventure.

Sometimes, bigger really is better. Phoenix (the "Valley of the Sun" to locals) invites you to enjoy major destinations for recreation and relaxation, must-visit venues in the culinary and cocktail kingdoms, and long-standing arts, civic and cultural institutions. And that just scratches the surface of things to do in Phoenix.

Be a good sport(s fan)

The Valley Metro public light rail system pulls up right outside Chase Field , the downtown Phoenix ballpark that's home to MLB's Arizona Diamondbacks. Footprint Center , the arena that's home to the NBA's Phoenix Suns, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and the IFL's Phoenix Rattlers, is just a few blocks west. On any game day, you'll find flocks of fans pre- and post-gaming at nearby sports bars, upscale eateries and neighborhood taquerias.

Get back to nature

South Mountain Park Preserve , the nation's largest municipally managed park, is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts to experience Phoenix activities. Hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders have more than 50 miles of trails, while bicyclists can test their endurance on the roadways that climb across three mountain ranges. On "Silent Sundays," the park even closes its main road to motor vehicles, allowing cyclists and hikers to enjoy the roadways without the buzz of automotive traffic.

Discover next-level relaxation

The luxury resort scene in Phoenix includes a long list of historic and modern properties that go big. Families enjoy epic-sized pools with monumental play features. Wellness travelers find spa treatments and fitness programs that add euphoria to vacation days. And for those who find their bliss on a golf course , many of the area's top resorts boast some of the best year-round courses in the country.

Whet your palate …

Some of the country's most innovative restaurateurs hone their culinary creations and prowess in Phoenix. The best-known restaurants in Phoenix have racked up regular plaudits from national newspapers and magazines and nominations from the James Beard Foundation. In 2022, local chefs and restaurants were named semifinalists in eight different categories.

… Then wet your whistle

The city's cocktail and craft brew culture are as strong as some of the pours you'll find therein. While beer and cider drinkers sample flights and drafts at a local microbrewery or meadery, those in search of higher spirits can content themselves with a well-composed tipple in one of the city's many other popular gathering spots.

Embrace creative culture

The galleries and exhibits at the Musical Instrument Museum draw from a collection of more than 8,000 instruments from around the globe, including opportunities to see and hear the instruments played … and sometimes play them yourself. Those who might prefer to leave the playing to the professionals, meanwhile, can reserve tickets for a Phoenix Symphony or Arizona Opera performance at Symphony Hall, one of many performance venues that make downtown a cultural center with a vibrant arts scene all around.

Discover more about desert life—then and now

One of Phoenix's first cultural institutions, the Heard Museum has grown into an international destination to learn about Native American art and history, while the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archeological Park is a must-see Phoenix attraction that takes visitors on a path to remnants of a ballcourt and platform created by the Hohokam people who lived in this area from A.D. 450 to 1450. And at the 140-acre Desert Botanical Garden , more than 50,000 desert plants illustrate the beauty and variety of desert plant life.

So thankful to Alex and his great staff. We are in AZ for vacation borrowing a friend's mountain bike and the back tire went flat. They came out to the house, picked up the bike and had it back in 2 hours working better than ever. Ironically, we had popped by their shop in December wondering if they could put air in our son's tires and they filled the tires and his basketball- saved this family on multiple vacations! Very grateful!

My new "go-to" for e-bikes and repairs. Roque Electric Cyclery shop was a "Lectric eBike Certified Location" so I brought my Lectric 3.0 there for some warranty work. I was pleasantry surprised how friendly and willing they were to make the quick fix while I waited. They went above and beyond to check out a few other things and answer my many questions. While I was there, I decided to have some Tannus Armours installed too. Dave was GREAT and I wouldn't hesitate to return for any additional service or sales.

A wonderful bike shop with friendly and knowledgeable owners. The repairs that they've made on my e-bike always make my bike feel brand new - and even better. Highly recommended. They also have great deals on e bikes and they do rentals.

Hi Gub, Thank you for the kind words! We are very glad to hear that your bike is performing better than ever. We know you have many options for bike shops to trust with your cycling needs, we want to thank you for choosing us! Have fun out there and we look forward to helping you again in the future!

I toured an Arizona neighborhood that banned cars and found a walkable oasis in the middle of a Phoenix suburb

  • Culdesac is a car-free neighborhood in Tempe, Arizona.
  • The housing startup has 200 residents who use bikes, scooters, and ride-share services to get around.
  • Take a look inside the walkable oasis filled with courtyards, local shops, and plenty of shade.

Insider Today

Walkable neighborhoods are on the rise. In a country run by cars, many millennials and Gen Zers are willing to spend more to live in a community where it's easy to get around without a vehicle, according to a 2023 study by the National Association of Realtors .

Enter Culdesac — the budding Arizona block making a name for itself as the "first car-free neighborhood built from scratch in the US."

Located in Tempe, home of Arizona State University, Culdesac is a community where cars are banned. It's been a project in the making since 2018. Last year, the neighborhood opened to residents. Now, 200 people live on the 17-acre block, a company representative told Business Insider. Eventually, Culdesac plans to house 1,000 residents.

As a New Yorker without a car, Culdesac intrigued me. So, on a recent trip to Arizona, I visited the car-free neighborhood and thought it felt like an urban oasis in the Phoenix suburb .

Culdesac is in the greater Phoenix area.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

The neighborhood is located on the east side of Tempe, just about 10 miles from Phoenix.

I recently got a private tour — and the chance to chat with the CEO.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

During my visit, I met with CEO and cofounder Ryan Johnson. After years of working in the real estate and transportation industries — and traveling to walkable places around the world — he was inspired to create a neighborhood free of cars.

From New York City to Budapest, Johnson says his travels launched a passion for cities.

"I saw those places and said, 'Wow, this is a much better way to build a city — with thoughtful architecture, great transportation systems,'" he told BI.

Johnson added that developments in the transportation industry, from ride-share apps to public transit systems and electric bikes , have made living car-free possible in places like Arizona.

Johnson, who grew up in Phoenix and currently lives at Culdesac, hasn't had a car in 14 years.

All around the property, I spotted electric bikes and scooters.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

Visitors and delivery drivers can park their cars at Culdesac, but residents cannot.

The company representative told BI that for residents with cars, "it's regulated through their lease agreement that they won't park on-site or on any public streets within 0.25 miles."

Some residents park their cars elsewhere in Tempe, while others, like Johnson, don't have a vehicle at all. Residents get around on foot, bicycles, electric bikes, and electric scooters. The neighborhood has more than 1,000 bike parking spots.

One Culdesac resident previously told BI that living without a car can be challenging outside the neighborhood, as the surrounding city was built for vehicles.

However, according to the company's website , Culdesac provides residents with a mobility package worth almost $3,000 a year to make transportation easier. It includes a complimentary Valley Metro pass for the light rail that goes through Phoenix and Tempe and discounts on ride-share apps like Lyft and Waymo , a self-driving cab service.

My tour began in the plaza.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

The plaza, located across from the neighborhood light rail stop, is the communal center of Culdesac. It's marked by a sculpture by artist Matthew Salenger that doubles as a canopy.

Here, there are games, shaded tables, and weekly events.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

Every Thursday evening, Culdesac hosts Little Cholla, a public outdoor night market with music, vendors, food trucks, art, and activities such as line dancing and yoga.

There's also a two-story gym.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

A two-story building in the plaza with giant windows is home to the neighborhood fitness center. It offers workout classes and is lined with equipment.

Across from the plaza, there are local shops run by residents.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

From thrifted clothing to unique dishware and candles, there's plenty of local shopping at Culdesac.

According to the company's website , there are about 11 micro-retail shops, including a market, a laundromat, a medical spa, an art studio, and a plant shop.

These micro-retailers have the option to live in their workspace.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

The company representative told BI that the small-business owners at Culdesac are residents, and some even live in their stores thanks to a zoning permit that allows them to do so.

All the stores have kitchens and bathrooms, and some have bedrooms.

Steps from the plaza, the neighborhood has a restaurant with outdoor seating.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

In April 2023, Culdesac's Cocina Chiwas opened. It's a family-owned Mexican restaurant serving Chihuahuan cuisine.

As I strolled the communal paths, I noticed that Culdesac didn't feel as hot as the surrounding streets. That's because there's no asphalt on the property.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

It's no secret that the Phoenix area is hot — sometimes dangerously so in the summers. So Culdesac was built to keep pedestrians cool without asphalt — a road material that gets hotter in the sun.

In the residential areas, the walkways are narrow.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

Culdesac intentionally placed the buildings close together to create as much shade as possible.

The buildings' color is also no accident. Culdesac chose white because it reflects sunlight rather than absorbs it.

Between residential buildings, there are courtyards with grills, tables, hammocks, and firepits.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

More than half of the entire property is open, landscaped space.

Culdesac has apartments ranging from studios to three-bedroom floor plans.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

Culdesac currently has 172 units. More will open in the fall, and the neighborhood will eventually have 760 units.

Studios start at $1,300 a month, one-bedrooms are $1,400, two-bedrooms are $2,100, and three-bedrooms are $2,900 a month.

On the outer rim of Culdesac, there's a bike shop with tune-up services.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

Archer's Bike Shop sells manual and electric bikes. And Culdesac residents get complementary services and product discounts.

Culdesac seems like a place where people can not only live car-free but also get to know their neighbors.

phoenix arizona bicycle tour

After my visit to Culdesac, I chatted with Brad Biehl, a 24-year-old resident from Colombus, Ohio. Biehl has lived in the neighborhood for six months. He said one of the best parts of living there is the sense of community.

"We're usually in environments where we walk from our door to our car and from the car into the place," Biehl said. "But here, to go anywhere, I usually pass at least two or three of my neighbors, even when I'm just walking to the light rail right around the corner."

Biehl added that he's optimistic about the future of Culdesac when more residents and retailers come in.

"While there are still not a ton of people here yet, there's way more going on than I would've expected there to be," he told BI. "The number of serendipitous interactions that have taken place with the limited number of residents makes me super excited for what people will experience here."

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Thunderbirds – hosts of the WM Phoenix Open presented by Taylor Morrison – announced the 2024 edition of “The People’s Open” raised a tournament record $17.5 million ($17,521,024) for Arizona charities. This marks the seventh time in tournament history the Thunderbirds and the WM Phoenix Open have raised more than $10 million for charity in a single tournament. The previous record was set last year ($14.5 million).

"Thunderbirds Charities and the Thunderbirds are proud to announce this record-breaking charitable donation exceeding $17.5 million from the 2024 WM Phoenix Open that will benefit Arizona charities," said 2024 Tournament Chairman George Thimsen. "The WM Phoenix Open is a key philanthropic event that directly impacts organizations who support those in need, reflecting our ongoing commitment to the Arizona community. The hard work and collaboration with our city and state leaders, PGA TOUR players, sponsors, vendors, volunteers and enthusiastic fans has led to this enormously positive impact on our communities."

The Thunderbirds and the WM Phoenix Open have now raised more than $142 million ($142,112,248) since 2010 when WM was named title sponsor, and more than $208 million ($208,158,814) for Arizona Charities in its 89-year history as one of the five longest-running events on the PGA TOUR. In the last nine years alone, the tournament has raised more than $105 million.

“Congratulations to the Thunderbirds on their record-breaking donation to Arizona charities from the 2024 WM Phoenix Open,” said Scott Bradley, WM Four Corners Area Vice President. “In the 15 years WM has served as title sponsor, The Thunderbirds and the WM Phoenix Open have raised more than $142 million for local charities, in turn making our community a better place for all residents.”

The announcement was made at the new Thunderbirds Charities Pediatric Burn Unit within the Diane and Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center - Valleywise Health. Valleywise Health Foundation, a longtime charity partner of The Thunderbirds and Thunderbirds Charities, provides philanthropic support to Valleywise Health programs, education, research and capital improvement projects. Valleywise Health (VH), Arizona’s only public teaching healthcare system serving all regardless of their ability to pay (more than 70 percent of VH patients are financially vulnerable), serves Arizona’s most critical healthcare needs by providing exceptional care, without exception, every patient, every time.

Thunderbirds Charities most recent donation of $500,000 went to Valleywise Health Foundation’s ALL IN Campaign that supports program and patient needs and helps augment voter-approved bonds designated solely for renovating and rebuilding aging facilities. The Halle Arizona Burn Center and Thunderbirds Charities Pediatric Burn Unit is set to open this June. Treating some of the most complex and traumatic burn and wound cases, the Diane and Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health is one of the nation’s largest and busiest academic burn centers with approximately 7,000 outpatient visits and more than 1,000 inpatient admissions each year. The new 75,000 square-foot Halle Arizona Burn Center will be a state-of-the-art facility, the epitome of excellence in burn care.

“Thanks to a generous gift from Thunderbirds Charities, the new Thunderbirds Charities Pediatric Burn Unit will be a safe space for children to heal, work through the trauma associated with their injuries, and get back to being a kid," said Kate Fassett, Chief Advancement Officer for Valleywise Health Foundation. "This truly meaningful gift will help children and families for generations to come."

“This long-standing partnership between Valleywise Health and Thunderbirds Charities is so special to us, and we’re immensely grateful for the more than $1.1 million Thunderbirds Charities has given Valleywise Health since 2010,” said Lia Christensen, Chief Administrative Officer at Valleywise Health.

(Gray News) - Jolene has done it again, but this time it was something positive.

Rolling Stone crowned Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” as the greatest country song of all time.

On Friday, the publication posted the ‘200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time’ list, which ranged from Willie Nelson to Shania, from George Strait to Beyoncé.

However, the 78-year-old superstar took the No.1 spot.

“Jolene is Dolly Parton’s pinnacle as a singer, songwriter, and storyteller: the ultimate country heartbreak song,” the publication said.

According to Rolling Stone , Jolene” has inspired great interpretations by artists, but it’s the song that sums up Dolly Parton at her ‘realest and greatest.’

So far, the song has been covered by numerous artists, including Miley Cyrus, Kelly Clarkson and most recently Beyonce.

Queen Bey recorded the iconic song for her highly anticipated country album, Cowboy Carter.
