Exploring San Diego on the Hop On Hop Off San Diego Old Town Trolley Tour

When you live near a tourist destination, you don’t always think to do the touristy things! We’ve been visiting San Diego for years, and in our quest to discover something new to do, decided to explore the city via San Diego Old Town Trolley Tours, an awesome Hop On Hop Off San Diego tour. This ended up being one of the most fun decisions we’ve ever made on a trip!

The San Diego Old Town Trolley stops at ten locations along a 25-mile loop around San Diego. You can easily explore the city’s attractions, museums, beaches, historic sites, shops and restaurants. It is truly the best San Diego sightseeing bus tour. I highly recommend this tour, especially if you are new to the city or just want an overview of everything San Diego has to offer.

► Travel Insight Save money exploring San Diego theme parks and attractions with a San Diego CityPASS , which includes the Old Town Trolley Tour and lots of other attractions!

So where does the Hop On Hop Off San Diego Old Town Trolley Tour go? Here are the Old Town Trolley stops:

Start in Old Town

Old Town San Diego

Known as the birthplace of California, Old Town is in the heart of San Diego. We love visiting Old Town San Diego! There is always something fun to explore, and they have the best Mexican food in San Diego!

Founded in 1769, Old Town San Diego is the site of the first Spanish settlement in California.

Today, Old Town State Historic Park is a lively attraction with 50 shops and restaurants and 36 museums and historic sites – many of which are free to explore.

The Whaley House Museum, one of San Diego’s most famous sites, is also just steps away from Old Town. (Old Town Trolley Tour San Diego Gold Pass includes free admission to the Whaley House Museum, which is said to be the most haunted house in America!)

If this sounds like a lot to cram into a day when you’re already planning on take the Old Town Trolley around San Diego – you are right! Your best bet is to come the day before and spend a few hours in Old Town. Enjoy a great dinner at one of the park’s many Mexican restaurants, and then spend the night.

We booked a room at the Best Western Plus Hacienda Hotel , which is literally adjacent to the park. The hotel was lovely and it was great to be able to spend time in Old Town at night and not have to worry about finding parking (or driving home after a few margaritas)!

The next morning, we were able to enjoy breakfast at the hotel and roll right over to the San Diego Old Town Trolley Tours ticket booth to catch the first tour at 9am.

San Diego Embarcadero

Explore San Diego on the Old Town Trolley Tour.

Stop B on the San Diego Hop On Hop Off Tour is located along the Embarcadero, near the USS Midway Museum, Maritime Museum and the Star of India.

This location is also home to a great public art display along the waterfront titled “A National Salute to Bob Hope and the Military.” Fifteen life-size bronze statues stand proudly on the waterfront in San Diego, with the USS Midway Museum as their backdrop, paying tribute to our American military. Definitely worth a quick stop if just for the photo opp!

Seaport Village

san diego trolley tour route map

Stop C is Seaport Village, one of San Diego’s most popular tourist spots. Seaport Village San Diego is a 14-acre waterfront shopping, dining, and entertainment destination. It features a promenade with spectacular views of the Coronado Bridge, Coronado Island and boats on the bay.

Downtown San Diego

Explore San Diego on the Old Town Trolley Hop-On-Hop-Off Tour.

The next group of stops on the San Diego Old Town Trolley Tour route (Stops D-G) hit different neighborhoods downtown.

If you are looking to do some shopping, Horton Plaza is a great multi-level open air mall. The historic Gaslamp Quarter is a neighborhood filled with restaurants and bars (definitely comes more alive at night) but in the daytime there are some sights to see if you hop off.

Because it was free with our trolley tour and we had never been there before, we took the opportunity to check out the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum – actually pretty interesting!

Coronado Island

Hotel Del Coronado Beach

Cross San Diego Bay via the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and hop off at Stop H on Orange Avenue, the main shopping and dining area of Coronado. The Hotel Del Coronado is two blocks south, and Coronado Beach is also two blocks away.

► Check out these family-friendly things to do in Coronado .

The iconic Hotel del Coronado is certainly one of San Diego’s most famous hotels. And luckily you don’t need to book a room to enjoy it! Wander through the hotel’s shops, grab a drink or snack at the Sun Deck Bar (and enjoy it while looking out at the sea!) or simply spend some time on the beach.

Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo

hop on hop off san diego trolley tour

Each of the San Diego attractions at Stop I can easily be a full day. The San Diego Zoo is easily one of the best and largest zoos in the country, and Balboa Park is home to 16 museums and 1200 acres of gardens and some truly amazing architecture.

Because we are “museum people” and there was an exhibit on Cannibalism at the Museum of Man that my teenage son wanted to see, we stopped. But if you’re schedule permits save this area for a day when you can dedicate a big chunk of time to explore.

Explore San Diego on the Old Town Trolley Hop-On-Hop-Off Tour.

Little Italy

In all the years we’ve been visiting San Diego, I had never even been to Little Italy. The Old Town Trolley Tour made it easy to hop off at Stop J and walk around, see what the neighborhood is all about.

Cap off your day with a made-fresh-daily gelato in Little Italy. And if you have kids (or just happen to like fire trucks), be sure to stop and check out the San Diego Firehouse Museum.

I’ve been to California a few times but never San Diego… Now I’m wondering if I’d ever be able to pull myself away from the beach to check out all of the city’s beautiful architecture!

I did the route 1 drive from LA to San Fran a few years back but unfortunately we didnt venture far enough south to discover San Diego. This post makes me want to go!!

This does look like a fun way to explore the city! I actually really like exploring local areas like a tourist sometimes. It gives you a whole new perspective on how fun your city can be! It’s really cool that so many of San Diego’s museums were included in the price too!

Wow, I honestly didn’t realize there was so much to do in San Diego. I live in LA so I’ve made the drive a couple times, just day trips, and I guess I didn’t research enough beforehand! I need to try again and do it right this time.

I have heard how wonderful the zoo is from multiple people now, maybe I should make it a weekend trip so I can spend a whole day there. I’m on the same page as your son, I want to see that cannibalism exhibit haha. How was it?

' src=

September 19, 2018 at 10:09 pm

You should definitely go for a weekend if you can get away overnight! We discovered a lot of things by taking the trolley that I didn’t even know were there. My husband and son really liked the cannibalism at the Museum of Man! It was very well done, educational and not too gross LOL. I walked around the park and went to the botanical gardens while they were there 🙂

I didn’t realize there was so much to see in San Diego! It sounds like a fun way to explore the city and see some of the sights you might not know exist. It would be hard to choose between the zoo and seeing Balboa Park and all of its museums.

I like this informative post. My cousin lives in Carlsbad, I’m sure she will take us everywhere if we go there again. But I think taking a trolley tour like you and your family did is a must-do. You have your family time while visiting the city, and you get to see a lot of things. Thank you for the post. Pinned it as well.

Pros of taking the Hop On Hop Off Trolley Tour in San Diego

One of the biggest benefits of the San Diego Hop On Hop Off Trolley is the wealth of information that it provides. The trolley is operated by knowledgeable and friendly tour guides who are well-versed in the city’s history and culture.

You can learn a lot about San Diego and get insights that you may not have gotten otherwise. The tour guides are also available to answer any questions you may have about the city, making the experience more interactive and engaging.

Another significant advantage of the Hop On Hop Off Trolley is that it is an excellent way to get around the city, especially if it’s your first time in San Diego. If you plan on visiting several different attractions in the city, the trolley can be an excellent option as it saves time and effort.

This is especially true if you’re short on time and want to see as much as possible in a limited time frame. The trolley is also an excellent choice for families with children, as they can enjoy many different attractions while staying comfortable on the trolley.

Cons of taking the Hop On Hop Off Trolley Tour in San Diego

One potential downside of the San Diego Hop On Hop Off Trolley is the cost. The trolley can be quite expensive, especially if you’re on a tight budget. However, it is essential to consider the value of the experience and weigh it against the cost.

If you’re not eager to see many attractions or prefer to explore the city at your own pace, the trolley may not be the best option for you. But if you want a comprehensive, engaging, and informative experience, then the cost may be worth it.

Another potential drawback is that the trolley can be quite crowded, especially during peak tourist season. Sometimes, finding a seat on the trolley can also be a challenge, and you may be forced to stand or wait for the next trolley. It’s essential to be aware of this and plan your trip accordingly to avoid any inconvenience.

However, in my experience at the only stop where we did not have enough room for everyone waiting, the driver called for another trolley to come to pick them up and we passed the trolley less than 2 minutes after leaving the stop.

Old Town Trolley Tours History

Old Town Trolley Tours has been in business for over 30 years now. They got their start in Key West, Florida, where three friends lived and worked restoring that community’s historic areas to their former glories. As they took note of the growing interest in Key West, which was drawing visitors from all over the world, they decided to establish their own tour company. The result was Old Town Trolley Tours, which now operates in several cities all across the United States.

What’s to See on an Old Town Trolley Tours

An Old Town Trolley Tour in San Diego stops at 12 different sites: Old Town Market, Maritime Museum of San Diego , Embarcadero Marina, Seaport Village , Marriott Marquis, Gaslamp Quarter , Petco Park , Barrio Logan, Hotel del Coronado , Coronado , Balboa Park , and Little Italy . You can hop-on and hop-off your trolley at any or all of these attractions, making an Old Town Trolley Tour a terrific way to experience San Diego’s many charms.

An Old Town Trolley Tour isn’t just about the convenience of being ushered around the city in style, moving with ease from San Diego landmark to San Diego landmark. As you ride along, your well-informed local guide will provide you with an entertaining and knowledgeable narration that’s sure to expand your knowledge about this remarkable city.

Old Town Trolley’s hop-on, hop-off tours in San Diego are available in your choice of 1-day or 2-day formats. Old Town Trolley also offers a few other tours in the San Diego market. These include the Ghosts & Gravestones Frightseeing Tour, which lasts approximately 90 minutes and takes you to some of San Diego’s most haunted sites. Stops include Pioneer Park, El Campo Santo Cemetery, and the Whaley House, all purported to be haunted. In fact, the Whaley House has so many documented paranormal experiences that the Travel Channel has named it the most haunted house in America. The San Diego City Lights tour, which proudly bills itself as San Diego’s only historic trolley night tour; and San Diego Seal Tours , a one-of-a-kind tour experience that lets you see San Diego by bus and boat, all on the same outing. Tips for Riding with Old Town Trolley Tours

  • If you were to ride your Old Town Trolley Tour from start to finish without getting off a single time—while most people decide to take advantage of the hop-on, hop-off privileges, certainly some individuals do just enjoy the ride in this fashion—it would last you about two hours. Otherwise, it’s easy to turn the tour into an entire day’s adventure.
  • Each stop on the tour route is scheduled to be visited by a trolley once every 30 minutes. However, conditions beyond Old Town’s control (traffic, weather, number of passengers at a given stop) can conspire to slow things down from time to time.
  • The trolleys are not heated, so while San Diego’s weather is more often than not lovely, you’ll want to dress in layers if the forecast calls for cooler temperatures.
  • If you’re looking to buy your Old Town Trolley Tours tickets in person, head to San Diego’s Old Town Market. There’s also plenty of parking available here.
  • Old Town Trolley Tours can accommodate individuals in wheelchairs, but they request 24-hour advance notice to make such arrangements possible.

Affordable, Sustainable Travel on San Diego’s Trolley System

Multiple Trolleys in Downtown San Diego

San Diego is a large city with so much to offer, and when you’re visiting (or commuting), you’ll need a reliable way to get around that’s quick and affordable. The San Diego Trolley connects many of San Diego’s top tourist destinations, as well as local neighborhoods , and is safe, easy to use, and reliable.

Know that the San Diego Trolley and the Old Town Trolley Tours are not the same thing. While both are enjoyed by visitors and local commuters, the San Diego Trolley is a series of light rail trolleys and trolley lines used to get around town. While the Old Town Trolley Tours is an all day tour that takes you on a bus that looks like a trolley all around San Diego showing you the highlights.

San Diego had an extensive trolley network in the late 19th and early 20th century, although those initial streetcars were eventually discontinued as cars became more mainstream. However, demand for more comprehensive public transit resurged in the 1970s, and San Diego opened their trolley system in 1981. The San Diego Trolley has been a key part of the city’s infrastructure ever since.

San Diego Trolley Passing the Convention Center

The San Diego Trolley currently has three main lines - the Blue, Orange, and Green lines. Currently, the Blue line runs south from downtown to the Mexican border. The Orange Line runs east of downtown to La Mesa and El Cajon. The Green Line runs north of downtown and then east through Mission Valley, meeting up with the Orange Line in El Cajon and running further to Santee.

The city just extended the Blue Line north to La Jolla , UC San Diego and UTC Mall and just outside Pacific Beach . This extension opened in 2021.

They also run the Silver Line, which is a downtown circulator that connects the three lines. This line only runs on selected days when the system is experiencing high volumes of traffic (usually weekends and holidays).

The San Diego Trolley is very safe and clean, with roomy, well-lit cars and stations. Many of the trolley stops connect to San Diego’s bus lines, which are run by the same transportation agency.

The Metropolitan Transit System has been San Diego’s main public transportation agency since the 1880s and operates a comprehensive network of trains, buses, and jitneys. The trolley also connects to other popular public transit services, such as the Coaster commuter train and the Pacific Surfliner Amtrak train .

Since traffic in San Diego can get very congested, the Trolley is often the quickest way to get from point A to point B. It’s also a safe alternative to driving if you’re going to be enjoying San Diego’s incredible nightlife.

Modern and bright, let Todd show you why the family-friendly, 4-star Carte Hotel San Diego Downtown, Curio Collection By Hilton in Downtown is one of the best hotels near the Cruise Port. Take a tour around the pool, lobby and more!

Where You Can Go on The San Diego Trolley

The San Diego Trolley has stops in many of San Diego’s most popular tourist destinations as well as many of its most populated suburbs. It’s important to note that the San Diego Trolley doesn’t go to every neighborhood or travel destination in the city. However, you can connect to buses or use rideshare services to fill in the gaps as you travel around San Diego.

San Diego Trolley Crossing Broadway in Downtown San Diego

If you’re planning on exploring all that downtown San Diego has to offer, the Trolley is one of the best ways to get there. All three of San Diego’s Trolley lines meet in the downtown area. The Green Line has stops in Seaport Village in the Embarcadero , the Gaslamp District , and the Convention Center area. The Blue and Orange Lines have stops in the East Village as well as the Civic Center area.

The Orange Line is used mainly by commuters, as it runs through San Diego’s eastern suburbs and doesn’t pass through any major commercial districts. However, the Blue Line and the Green Line both run to many of San Diego’s most popular destinations.

Trolley Passing in East Village

The Blue Line currently connects downtown with the city’s southern communities, including Barrio Logan , National City, and Chula Vista . The San Ysidro station, which is the line’s end point, provides easy access to Tijuana, the Mexico border and the Las Americas premium outlets, which is a popular shopping destination.

A Blue line extension is now open north of the downtown San Diego. This extension runs through the Mission Bay and La Jolla areas. It also connects to the University of California, San Diego as well as the UTC Mall .

The Green Line also connects to many popular tourist destinations outside of downtown. From the downtown area, it runs north to Little Italy and Old Town , two neighborhoods that are known for their dining and drinking options. From there, the trolley runs east, connecting to both Fashion Valley Mall and Mission Valley mall, as well as to the new Snapdragon Stadium and San Diego State University.

The trolley is the best way to get around when there is a festival, street fair or popular convention going on. Some great examples are the annual Comic-Con Convention at the San Diego Convention Center and the annual Día de los Muertos celebration in Old Town . Parking is very limited so getting to / from on the trolley is the easiest and cheapest way to attend these events.

There are some key destinations that the San Diego Trolley doesn’t serve. The Trolley doesn’t go to Balboa Park or the San Diego Zoo , and it also doesn’t go to any of the popular beach neighborhoods, like Coronado and Ocean Beach .

The Trolley also does not connect to North County destinations like the San Diego Zoo Safari Park or LEGOLAND . However, if you are looking to visit any of these neighborhoods or attractions, there are commuter trains, buses , and rideshare options to get you there without having to rent a car.

What to Expect on The San Diego Trolley

San Diego Trolley next to the Westgate Hotel

The San Diego Trolley is very safe and easy to use. You can generally expect a very pleasant experience when using the Trolley to get around, regardless of where you are or the time of day. As with any public transit system, you should always be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Many of the Trolley stations are in very walkable areas. Some also have attached transit centers where you can transfer to local bus lines. Some of the MTS transit centers also have park and ride centers where you can safely leave your car.

Before you ride the Trolley, you’ll need to purchase a Compass Card. A Compass Card is reusable and can store both individual fares and long-term passes. The Compass Card can be used on both the Trolley and San Diego’s bus system.

There are two ways to purchase a Compass Card. The first is to purchase one at the station from a self-serve kiosk ticket vending machine. The kiosks are clearly marked. Here, you can pay with either cash or card. You can also download the Compass Card app and purchase fares on your mobile phone with a credit or debit card.

Once you have your pass, you’ll be able to board the Trolley. There are no fare gates or conductors at the stations, although you will need to tap your card at the fare box for validation. Conductors may come through and check your fare while you’re on the train, which is why it’s so important to have a ticket before you board. If you’re caught riding without a ticket, you could be subject to fines.

Before getting on the train, be sure to check and make sure you are on the right platform. Each platform is labeled with the direction of the train. Each train is also labeled with its final destination on the front and side of the cars. As you ride, listen for the voiceover that announces the name of each station as you arrive.

Best Time to Use the San Diego Trolley

Trolley Passing Through Core Columbia

The San Diego Trolley runs from approximately 4:30 AM until 12:30 AM. During most of the day, trolleys arrive every 15 to 20 minutes. Early in the morning and late at night, trolleys run every 30 minutes. The Blue Line, which sees the most ridership, runs approximately every 7 minutes between 6 AM and 7 PM.

It’s best to ride the Trolley during the day and early evening, when the trains come most often. Trains are likely to be most crowded during the morning and afternoon rush hours, but you’ll likely still be able to get a seat. You can still use the Trolley at night to get to your destination, you’ll just need to plan for additional travel time.

Be sure to check the Trolley schedule before you go to give yourself enough time to get to your destination. You can check the Trolley schedule using the Compass Cloud app or the MTS website. There are also timetables posted at each station.

The San Diego Trolley is a very affordable way to get around town. One-way fares are $2.50 for adults and kids and $1.25 for senior, disabled, and Medicare customers. There is also a $2 fee for purchasing a new Compass card.

If you’re going to be using the Trolley multiple times in one day, you may want to consider purchasing a day pass. Day passes cost $6. Those who are going to be in San Diego for an extended period of time can also purchase a regional 30-day pass, which is $72. The MTS also offers discounted 30 day passes for seniors and disabled customers as well as students and youth customers. These monthly passes are $23.

Be sure to always double check directly with the Metropolitan Transit System for any updates to the latest pricing for the San Diego Trolley.

The Santa Fe Depot, located in downtown San Diego at Kettner and Broadway, is the main hub for Amtrak and the Coaster commuter rail, with train service from downtown San Diego to Oceanside and beyond. There are also plenty of connecting services from the Oceanside station, including the SPRINTER inland rail that travels east to Escondido.

Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner will take you along the beautiful coastline from San Diego to Solana Beach and Oceanside, and onward to Anaheim, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and more destinations.

For Amtrak schedules and updates, visit Pacific Surfliner .

Hop on the Coaster

The North County Transit District's COASTER trains connect downtown San Diego and Old Town with coastal communities north of the city, including Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad and Oceanside. These trains offer visitors car-free access to some of the most charming beach communities in the region, as well as a relaxing ride with breathtaking coastal scenery. More than 20 trains run on weekdays, with additional service on weekends. The entire COASTER route from Oceanside to the Santa Fe Depot downtown takes about an hour. An adult round-trip fare from downtown San Diego to Oceanside is inexpensive and children 5 and under ride for free.

For COASTER schedules and information, visit the COASTER .

Take the Sprinter

The east-west SPRINTER light-rail train system connects Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido. The 22-mile route runs along the state Route 78 corridor, serving 15 stations and running every 30 minutes. Adult one-way fares are inexpensive and children 5 and under ride free. A regional day pass, valid on the SPRINTER, Trolley and buses throughout the county, is also available.
