Mediterranean Cruise Ports of Call

Discover some of the world-renowned destinations that await you on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.

Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.

As one of the greenest islands in Greece, Corfu is an emerald treasure amidst the colorful Mediterranean landscape. From Paleokastritsa, hike to the mountaintop for unparalleled views of the Ionian Sea. Or get a taste of Corfu when you team up with a famous chef, and handpick local produce that they’ll use to prepare your lunch. Experience it all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

On a Mediterranean cruise to Livorno, travel to Florence or Pisa where artifacts abound. Capture snapshots of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, stop by Michelangelo’s David statue at the Accademia and walk up to the “Gates of Paradise” at the Baptistery. Or explore the countryside and meander through the region’s rolling hills that bear vineyards and green olive groves.

Nestled within Boka Bay lies a medieval gem. Kotor is enrobed in ancient houses, palaces and churches that speak to its 12th-century origins. On a Greek cruise, dine on Montenegrin cuisine in the home of a local chef, appreciate 14th-century Venetian art at St. Tryphon’s Cathedral and taste regional wines along the riviera. Or see another side of the city when you kayak through the tunnels of Lipa Cave.

As the largest port in the Mediterranean, Marseille is the gateway to opportunity. On a Mediterranean cruise, spend the day in Arles, and explore the landscapes that inspired much of Van Gogh’s artwork. Stroll through the MuSaMa, a soap museum, and create your own blend alongside a master soap maker. Or roam the city’s most popular landmark, Notre-Dame de la Garden, a Catholic basilica that overlooks the city.

Famous for its beaches and spirited lifestyle, Mykonos is the heartbeat of Greece. Embark on a jeep safari past the city’s windmills, lighthouses and lakes. Walk past temples and marble-lined sanctuaries in Delos, the birthplace of famous Greek gods. Or soak up a day of relaxation on the beach with the city’s Cycladic architecture as your backdrop — all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Santorini is the epitome of Greece. Wander into the welcoming cafes in Oia, a village teeming with whitewashed buildings and blue-domed roofs. Continue to some of the world’s oldest vineyards and taste the bouquet of wines produced on the island, making sure to visit the black-sand beach of Kamari before heading back to your Mediterranean cruise ship.

Why Cruise the Mediterranean

In lands where the culture is as flavorful as the cuisine, the splendor of the Mediterranean speaks for itself.

World-Class Dining

Captivating cuisine

With mouthwatering entrees and confections, the Mediterranean invites you to embark on a gourmet tour through iconic cities. Reawaken your taste buds with Italian classics like pastas, pizzas and gelato. Or fill your plate with gyros, keftethes and baklava on a Greek cruise. From breakfast to dinner and every delectable dessert in between, the best is before you with Princess.

Bold reds and crisp whites

The countryside of Italy and Greece are home to some of the most flavorful wines around the globe. With sun and warm temperatures year-round, vineyards are flourishing with grapes by the harvest season. Sip on Italy’s red wines, or sample Greece’s white blends. From sweet Lambruscos to earthy Bordeauxs, fill up your glass on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Ancient Ruins

Where history comes to life

From towers and temples to cities and shorelines, the Mediterranean is sprinkled with remains of civilizations past. Step back in time on a tour through ancient ruins on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess. Imagine life as a gladiator at the Colosseum, explore Greek mythology at the Parthenon and discover the archeological excavations of Pompeii — a lost city and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Art Galleries & Museums

Artistic ingenuity abounds

From the treasures on land to the jewels within museums, the Mediterranean is a true work of art. On an Italian cruise, see portraits from the Renaissance period at the Uffizi Museum in Florence, and admire Michelangelo’s masterpieces at the Vatican Museum in Rome. Or walk in the footsteps of celebrated artists that called these regions home — like Picasso and Dali — and allow their work to spark your creativity.

Sun-Kissed Beaches

A vision of natural beauty

Visions of sparkling coasts and crystalline waters welcome you to the Mediterranean. Dip your toes on the black-sand coast of Santorini on a Greek cruise. Head to Salerno to spend the day in Positano relaxing on the white beaches and admiring the pastel houses that decorate the cliffs around you. Or travel to Mykonos with your loved ones and daydream on the city’s long stretch of golden sand and stroll in the sunshine.

Mediterranean excursions

Our award-winning Mediterranean cruise shore excursions bring you to iconic beaches, landmarks and ancient artifacts. See the yacht-lined shores of Kotor while riding on a tuk tuk, an electric rickshaw. Savor the flavors of “Koum Kouat” liqueur, created from Corfu’s exclusive citrus plant. Or stroll along the streets of Dubrovnik’s Old town, one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in the world.

Local connections

From chefs and beverage makers to artists and guides, meet the many personalities that call the Mediterranean home with our Local Connections program. On a Mediterranean cruise, voyage to an olive tree farm just outside of Provence, and join your hosts for a unique olive oil tasting. Or explore the Archaeological Museum of Naples with a local artist, and accompany them for lunch to dive even deeper in Italy’s art scene.

More ashore

Enjoy even more opportunities to experience the colors, cultures and flavors of the Mediterranean with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. Witness the beautiful sunset in Mykonos on a Greek cruise. Sit front-row for a flamenco dance, and savor a paella dinner during an evening in Barcelona. Or stroll the illuminated streets of Genoa with gelato in hand after a traditional Italian dinner.

Mediterranean Cruise Onboard Experience

Curated comfort, world-class entertainment and international flavors await you.

The Best Europe Cruises for 2021 and Beyond

If you want to see the Northern Lights in Norway, Seabourn’s wintertime Norway cruises are your best bet.

After a pandemic year without any European cruises available to Americans, sailing options are returning for the summer 2021 season. Cruise lines are testing the waters with a limited number of ships and new health and safety protocols in place with most cruises restricted to passengers who have been vaccinated.

There are benefits to being first in line postpandemic. Ships will sail at reduced capacity and popular attractions are unlikely to be crowded. You may find you have a museum or café practically to yourself. As restrictions ease, the traffic is bound to pick up in 2022, which already is looking like a year when ships will sail full due to pent-up demand.

Here are our picks for cruises this summer and beyond.

Norway: Seabourn wintertime cruise

Seeing the Northern Lights is practically guaranteed on Seabourn’s new wintertime Norway itineraries debuting in December. The 12- to 14-day sailings also introduce the line’s first purpose-built, polar-class expedition yacht, the 264-passenger Seabourn Venture , equipped with two custom, six-seat submarines, two dozen Zodiacs, and expedition kayaks for intimate exploration of Norway’s winter landscape. Excursions, which include the opportunity to camp on land overnight for optimal Northern Lights viewing, are led by a 26-person expedition team. Alternatively, you may opt to just stay cozy in your fancy suite and get a wake-up call should the lights appear. Most departures are from Tromsø, Norway, or Copenhagen, with fares for 12-night sailings starting from $10,999 per person.

Greece: A crusie with Seabourn, Silversea, Ponant, Windstar, or Variety Cruises

With its historic sites, whitewashed towns, the popular beaches of Mykonos, and views galore in the cliffside towns of Santorini, Greece opened its doors to international travelers in May. Nearly a dozen cruise lines are returning to the Aegean this summer and fall so there are ample options for those seeking to sail the Greek isles.

Ultraluxury lines such as Seabourn and Silversea are in the mix for summer 2021, along with boutique lines such as France-based Ponant and Windstar , with its 148-passenger, four-masted Wind Star sailing ship.

Or explore for a week on Greek-owned Variety Cruises ’ 157-foot, 49-passenger sailing yacht Galileo , going beyond the norm to lesser-known Cycladic and Dodecanese islands such as Levitha, where a summertime restaurant for sailors is run by the one family who lives on the island.

Adriatic: Viking’s 10-night Malta and Adriatic Jewels Cruise

Viking’s Malta and Adriatic Jewels Cruise includes port stops in Croatia.

When Viking Ocean Cruises returns to cruising this summer, it will have three ships sailing from Valletta on Malta to Greece, Italy, and Spain. Our pick is Viking’s 10-night Malta and Adriatic Jewels Cruise, roundtrip from Valletta. The ship gets you to Kotor, Montenegro (you’ll want to be on deck as you sail through a river valley surrounded by peaks); the fairy-tale-like Old Town of Dubrovnik, Croatia; the Croatian city of Split with its 4th-century Roman palace; and Gozo, Malta, where according to legend giants built the prehistoric palace, which predates Stonehenge. There’s also opportunity in Croatia and Malta to see filming locations for HBO’s Game of Thrones . Sail on the 930-passenger Viking Venus , a new ship from Viking. Fares from $3,599 per person.

Basque Country: Lindblad Expeditions Lisbon to Bordeaux cruise

New from Lindblad Expeditions in April 2022 is a unique cultural exploration cruise from Lisbon to Bordeaux . The itinerary begins in Porto, Portugal, and continues through Basque country to the epicenter for French wine, Bordeaux, with a strong focus on food and drink throughout the cruise.

Spain and France: National Geographic Resolution

Sail on the new, polar-class, 126-passenger National Geographic Resolution , where you can work out in the yoga studio or linger in the infinity-style hot tubs when not on shore sipping port at the wine cellars in Porto. During the cruise, you will have the opportunity to spend a day collecting mussels with local fishermen in Galicia, Spain, visit Bilbao’s Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim art museum, and sample tapas and sparkling wine in a French Basque fishing village. Fares from $6,870 per person.

River Cruise: AmaWaterways’ AmaMagna cruise

Get into the heart of great European cities such as Budapest on a Danube river cruise.

River cruises return this summer , with Viking, Uniworld, Scenic, and AmaWaterways among the lines relaunching ships—although not their whole fleets—on rivers that include Portugal’s Douro, France’s Seine and Rhône, and the multi-country Rhine and Danube. A great way to sail the Danube is on AmaWaterways ’ impressive, double-wide, 196-passenger AmaMagna , traveling between Budapest and Vilshofen, Germany, stopping in Bratislava, Slovakia, and with an overnight in Vienna. Sip the local gruner veltliner and riesling in Wachau Valley or dance like you are in The Sound of Music in Salzburg. Back on the ship, check out in wellness classes on the spacious roof deck or dining in onboard restaurants that include a fancy Chef’s Table venue (where you might score a taste of Siberian caviar) and a wine bar. Attention Disney and Pixar fans. If, after seeing the movie Luca , which debuts June 18, your family gets a hankering to visit Italy, Disney Cruise Line has you covered. The 1,750-passenger Disney Magic will sail in Europe spring and summer 2022, with several sailings stopping in Italy. A six-night departure from Barcelona to Rome on June 4, 2022 (fares for a family of four sharing a cabin start at $6,732 per person), gets you to Genoa, which is key. Scenes from the movie, a 1950s coming-of-age story, are inspired by the area southeast of Genoa. An Ultimate Italian Riviera shore excursion ($159 per person) takes you to the town of Camogli and other sites that will look familiar to Luca fans. Disney is being mum about any possible movie-related character appearances and experiences.

You can alternatively book a 37-night segment to visit 33 places in the Mediterranean, or a 53-night segment that will get you from Lisbon to Stockholm, including the British Isles, Scandinavia, and Russia. Norwegian line Hurtigruten explores remote parts of the British Isles on a 12-night itinerary (from $6,741 per person) next spring and summer, with the recently updated 532-passenger Maud. Sailing roundtrip from Dover, United Kingdom, passengers will visit places known for Neolithic sites, bird colonies, whiskey, and woolens. Among the destinations are Rathlin Island in Northern Ireland, with easy access to the basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway, and Scotland’s Inner and Outer Hebrides, including the rocky and wild St. Kilda archipelago, home to the second-largest gannet colony in the world. Plan to sip on Islay Island, Scotland, home to nine distilleries, and have an opportunity to purchase crystal in Waterford, Ireland. For those looking to reduce their footprint as they return to travel, it’s worth noting that the ship was recently reconfigured to run partially on biofuel and lower emissions.

Debuted in October 2021, Rotterdam welcomes up to 2,668 guests. The name hearkens back to the line's founding in the late 19th century, when its first ship, Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. Though the ship's name is rooted in the cruise line's past, its amenities are anything but antiquated.

Among Rotterdam's standout facilities is World Stage, a performance venue that features a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that creates a panorama of light and sound for audience members. For more entertainment, passengers can catch a performance at any of the ship's numerous music venues, including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King's Blues Club.

When travelers aren't grooving to live tunes, they can test their luck at the onboard casino or relax at the spa. Meanwhile, kids can play the day away at the Kids Club. Foodies will be pleased to hear the ship offers eight dining options, including Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French brasserie, and Tamarind, which highlights the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Cabins range in size from 143 square feet to 1,290 square feet, with some of the luxury suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, whirlpool baths and verandas with hot tubs.

Sailings aboard Rotterdam depart from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Amsterdam to destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip: The art collection aboard Rotterdam is valued at more than $4.1 million and has 2,645 pieces of diverse works ranging in value from $500 to $620,000. Take some time to walk around the ship to explore the collections. Each of the three stairwells has a theme that reaches from top to bottom: architecture, music or zoology. – Jill Schildhouse, Contributor

A resident historian is also on board to offer lectures and educational programming about upcoming port destinations. When hunger strikes, Viking Saturn offers an array of dining options, from fresh seafood at World Café to afternoon tea service at Wintergarden to traditional Norwegian cuisine at Mamsen's. What's more, each accommodation includes 24-hour room service. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

Best European cruises: 6 ships that stand out across the pond

Ashley Kosciolek

Prospective cruisers often ask me what the best Europe cruises are, but that question is difficult to answer because Europe is massive. It encompasses some 45 countries and includes such cruise regions as the Mediterranean, the Baltic and Northern Europe, the British Isles and the Canary Islands.

While cruisers are spoiled for choice in this part of the world, it can be difficult to know where to begin when researching voyages.

To help you out, I've narrowed down my favorites for the best cruises to Europe for different types of travelers, including families, couples and solo travelers.

Note: Pricing was accurate at the time of publication. Fares are subject to change without notice, and they do not include additional fees or port taxes.

Best European cruises for families: Disney Dream

one day cruise in europe

Disney Cruise Line is great for kids; if you're planning a cruise in Europe with kids, Disney Dream is a logical choice for best European cruise for families.

Character meet 'n' greets, awe-inspiring nighttime entertainment and fun dining experiences mean your kiddos will never be bored. The ship's stellar kids clubs go above and beyond with a likeness of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and a replica of the Millennium Falcon from "Star Wars" (with visits from R2-D2 and a squad of stormtroopers).

Disney Dream is not the line's newest ship, meaning it's a bit more manageable in terms of both size and price. It's not the oldest, either, so families will find more things to do on board than on the line's smallest vessels.

Ashore, Disney's family-friendly excursions will take you to laze on the beach, explore museums and learn about history.

Disney Dream sails three- to 12-night cruises to Northern and Western Europe, the British Isles and the Mediterranean. Cruise fares start from $308 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. You can visit ports like Belfast and Liverpool on cruises from Southampton; Florence and Rome (Civitavecchia) on Barcelona sailings; and Reykjavik, Copenhagen and Lisbon on open-jaw itineraries.

If you're a couple seeking an upscale Mediterranean experience that offers real value and a chance to reconnect with your partner, look no further than Viking .

Viking includes at least one free shore excursion per port in its fares. That means you can wander Europe's romantic cobblestone streets hand in hand with your sweetie without paying a penny extra.

Plus, all cabins on Viking's ships have balconies, which is great if you want some fresh air but feel like keeping to yourself. Complimentary room service is available 24/7, so you can order dinner to your cabin for a relaxing alfresco dining experience for two.

Best for solo cruisers: Norwegian Epic

one day cruise in europe

When Norwegian Epic debuted in 2010, it introduced Norwegian Cruise Line 's first cabins for solo travelers. Designed with single beds and a bit less square footage, these so-called studio cabins are clustered around an exclusive lounge reserved for solos. Special activities allow folks traveling alone to mingle and make new friends.

Since Norwegian Epic began sailing, nearly all of the line's new ships — Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva — have been built with accommodations for one, which don't charge occupants a single supplement . However, it's Norwegian Epic that has a presence in the Western Mediterranean, offering solo cruisers a chance to explore Europe on a ship with staterooms just for them.

On board, passengers have plenty of choices for activities and dining. In addition to the usual cruise-ship offerings — pool games, dance parties, game shows, trivia and movie screenings — Epic offers many fun diversions, including an adults-only beach club at the back of the ship, spa treatments, a bowling alley and even gaming lessons (the latter three for a fee).

The vessel sails five- to 12-night voyages back and forth between Rome and Barcelona, calling on ports that include Naples, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Marseille, Cannes and Florence (Livorno). At press time, last-minute fares started from $90 per person, per night, for a studio cabin for one.

Best European party cruises: Virgin Voyages' Resilient Lady

one day cruise in europe

If your Europe bucket list includes the Greek Isles, you don't want to sail with children, and you enjoy a lively party atmosphere, you can't go wrong with Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady. The third ship in the line's fleet, Resilient Lady offers some of the best cruises to the Greek Islands.

Expect a casual vibe where passengers dress up like mermaids, crew dress up like drag queens, and performers look like real people. Toss in an onboard tattoo parlor, a food court ( it's not a buffet ), free fitness classes and an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on the ship, and you've got a product that has turned the cruise industry on its head.

Wild nights on board include raucous and sometimes raunchy theater shows, impromptu dance parties and Scarlet Night, a poolside bash reminiscent of a rave where everyone's dressed in red. If that's not enough, attend enough daily activities, and you might be invited to a secret nighttime tour of the crew bar, drinks included.

The ship offers a regular program of 7-, 10- and 14-night voyages, starting from $148 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. The itineraries involve a mix of ports in Greece, Montenegro, Croatia and Turkey, depending on the specific sailing you choose.

What began more than 130 years ago as a way for Norway's residents to move themselves and cargo up and down the Norwegian coast continues today as both a means of transportation and a way for cruisers to experience the country's culture.

On the cruise line's Norwegian Coastal Express route, Hurtigruten's Richard With ship calls on 34 ports in just seven days. Some are quick stops in the middle of the night while cargo is loaded and unloaded, but you technically could get off the ship in each port if you wanted to. That in itself makes this itinerary buzzworthy.

Still need convincing? These voyages also cross into the Arctic Circle and sail into Geirangerfjord (northbound from Bergen to Kirkenes) and Trollfjord (southbound from Kirkenes to Bergen), affording absolutely breathtaking views and, of course, bragging rights.

The two routes can be combined into longer 13-day sailings, meaning you'd sail round-trip from Bergen and see all the fjords. Seven-night northbound itineraries from Bergen to Kirkenes start at $331 per person, per night, for an inside cabin.

Bottom line

Ultimately, the best cruise to Europe is a bit subjective in that it depends where in Europe you'd like to go and what your travel style is. Be sure to weigh a combination of destination, price and onboard vibe when deciding which is best for you and your travel party.

It was a great cruise. The food was amazing, the crew was really helpful, and the tours and tour guides were great. The only thing to imporve on if the WiFi which only worked half the time.
The Wi-Fi didn’t work as expected and it caused quite an inconvenience. The excursion plan is not as clear either. Overall it’s still a good tour but I think my last Danube river with Avalon is better than this rhino river cruise.
Great company to cruise with. Ship carries 110 passengers. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner each day. Plenty of stops to sightsee. The castles along the Rhine make trip a very enjoyable cruise. All staff were great.

There’s so much variety across the continent and its islands, and with Carnival you have options for experiencing many of these places by sea. Cruise the Mediterranean and soak in the espresso-fueled, yet somehow unhurried, cobblestone-lined street life from a sidewalk café. Snow-capped peaks go great with postcard-perfect glaciers across Northern Europe destinations… plus you’ll find some of the greenest British Isle views on the same itinerary! Western Europe cruises visit the region from which the explorers of the New World kicked off their voyages. If your head is spinning with all the possibilities… great! How To Fully Relax And Unwind On Your Seven-day Cruise To Europe

Cruises out of europe for a relaxing vacation.

By Robert Schrader | Published on June 5, 2023

With a seven-day cruise to Europe, the possibilities for adventure are endless. Decisions and preparations can seem endless, too, though they don't have to be. By tackling a short to-do list before you depart and being mindful of a few important things as you travel, you can ensure your next week-long European cruise  is smooth sailing, no matter where it takes you. Speaking of which — that's a great place to start!

Where To Sail From — And To

Sunset in Santorini, Greece

As you'll know if you're well-versed on how to plan a European vacation, you'll also need to account for a few variables. Will you or anyone in your party need a day (or a few) to overcome jet lag upon arrival? Do you want to do sightseeing in your place of origin before or after your cruise? How well do you know the city, and if you don't, how much research do you need to do to make sure your departure (and the time leading up to it) is smooth?

Once you decide where you'll be sailing from and when you'd like to travel, you'll need to compare routes and see which is best for you. If, for example, the coasts of Spain and France are your priority, you might choose a western Mediterranean cruise . In addition to stopping in cities like Cannes in France  and Barcelona in Spain, other destinations on these cruises include Rome, Venice and Florence in Italy.

Another possibility for a seven-day cruise to Europe it to sail east. Some eastern Mediterranean cruises focus on one country or region — for example, the Greek Isles, including Santorini , Mykonos  and Crete . Others head to even more far-flung destinations, such as the Turkish port city of Kuşadası or Dubrovnik, the Croatian city where many pivotal scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed..

Explorer of the Seas Docked in New Zealand's Port

Europe's Ultimate Port Excursions

The key to choosing amazing port excursions is to look at your trip as a whole and make sure there's variety. Some people cruise through Europe precisely because they want to sun themselves on as many amazing beaches as possible. In this case, you should absolutely hit the sand as often as possible!

However, for most travelers, the most satisfying European vacation  is the most diverse one. Families, for example, might make sure that each of their children has at least a day to do what they want. One child might want to explore the temples of Ephesus in Turkey , while the other may prefer to take a vaporetto (water taxi) to the glassmaking island of Murano near Venice, Italy .

Couples taking a seven-day cruise to Europe should plan to balance exploration and relaxation. If your cruise travels between attraction-heavy cities like Athens, Venice or Barcelona, for example, you might focus the time between on lesser-known beaches — such as Cefalù in Sicily — or smaller towns and villages like France's Èze, which is not far from Cannes.

Port Shopping Local Straw Market

The Secret To Amazing Sea Days

The good news? When booking cruises out of Europe that lasts a week or less, you won't have too many idle days at sea. The better news? If you're clear about what will serve you best during the days and/or nights you'll need to spend away from dry land, you can ensure you make the most of them, ideally before you even set sail.

If you're on a couple's cruise, for example, you could use a sailing day for dining or drinking, particularly if your onshore excursions have been of the more active sort. Although everyone needs to fuel themselves, it can be difficult to enjoy a meal at a leisurely pace if you know you've got a long hike or an extensive day of exploring museums to tick off your European cruise itinerary. Likewise, if you rent a car and need to drive, local spirits are obviously a no-go!

Usually, the idle periods of a seven-day cruise to Europe serve a slightly different purpose for families, no matter what age the kids are. Teens and tweens may retreat to their devices while parents head to dinner or to enjoy entertainment. Or, if you have younger kids, you might procure onboard childcare so that you and your partner can have some time to yourselves before the next port of call.

Family Walking to Get Pizza, Sorrento's

The Power Of (Good) Packing

The key to packing well for a cruise is to hit the sweet spot. For example, when it comes to clothing, keep in mind that outfits are about combinations. Just because you're traveling for a week  doesn't mean you need seven tops, seven bottoms and seven pairs of shoes! One thing I like to do before traveling is to have a little fashion show in my closet and see how many different looks I can create with the fewest possible pieces. The same is true for toiletries or beauty appliances. Do you really need a flat iron when your hair is just going to curl anyway, or five different colognes when everything will just smell like the sea?

On the other hand, you'll want to make sure (and double-check) that you have packed everything essential. Think: medications you can't easily obtain abroad, important toys for your kids and books or magazines that aren't available on an e-reader. When packing something, try and rate on a scale of one to 10 how difficult it would be to find abroad. If it's a one, maybe leave it behind and save room for something else. If it's a 10, then by all means pack it!

Then, there's what you'll bring back (or won't, if you aren't much of a shopper). Travelers very into retail therapy might take along an extra empty bag to fill. For those more intent on coming home with memories, the essential thing is to pack a huge memory card and maybe even a USB stick or external hard drive just in case your phone gets too full of photos. The key, no matter your situation, is to be mindful of the type of traveler you are and to anticipate what you will (and won't) need.

Day-By-Day Cruise Itinerary Example

Want to know what a well-planned European cruise vacation looks like? Here's an example of one of the best cruise trips to Europe you can take!

Day 1:  Having arrived in Athens  two full days earlier (one for sleeping, one for sightseeing), you and your travel crew are ready to set sail!

Day 2:  Arrive in Mykonos, an island that's as famous for postcard-perfect beaches as it is for its charming old town and windmills. Have a low-key day with a nice meal in town or a swim and sunbathe, but maybe not both. Pace yourself and don't push too hard!

Day 3:  Head to Santorini , an island that's as beautiful as Mykonos , but the scenery and civilization are more intertwined. Hang out in coastal Oia, where you can enjoy jaw-dropping views as you sip (or take shots of!) ouzo and eat fresh-grilled octopus.

Day 4:  Your next stop is Crete, a larger Greek Island where towering inland mountains (and, in particular, Samaria Gorge) make perfect hiking destinations. Have smaller kids or an older person traveling with you? Not to worry! Chania Beach is one of Europe's most relaxing beaches.

Day 5:  Spend your sailing day doing whatever soothes you. For more forward-looking travelers, this may involve planning out the last few days of the cruise or even onward European travel if you plan to stay on the continent. Contemplative travelers may choose to edit photos or journal while your kids (or you — no judgment!) use onboard WiFi to catch up on their favorite series. Or, you might simply enjoy onboard food and drink.

Day 6:  Arrive in Palma, the largest city on the Spanish island of Mallorca . If you prioritized the beach in Greece, you might spend time dining and sipping fabulous drinks in Palma's Old Town. Conversely, Mallorca beaches such as Cala Mesquida and Cala Formentor are perfect if you want to veg out before arriving in Barcelona.

Day 7:  Although you can experience Barcelona sights such as Parc Güell, the Sagrada Familia church and Barceloneta Beach in just one day, it's best to spread things out more. Use your last cruise day to relax with paella or tapas upon arriving in the Catalonian capital, then endeavor to spend another day or two sightseeing.

We Took Our 5-year-old Son on a European River Cruise — Here's Why It Was the Ultimate Family Vacation

Most river cruise lines offer few accommodations for families, but German cruise line A-Rosa is working to change that.

Courtesy of A-Rosa Cruises

"Keep up, mummy," bellowed Sebastian, my fearless 5-year-old, as he and my husband, Eamonn, descended into Antwerp Cathedral's eerie crypt. This subterranean vault, accessed via a narrow coiling staircase off the church nave, is a small room with a low ceiling and crumbling hollow tombs. A shiver crept up my spine as I stood among the remains of this former burial chamber. This was my cue to return to the ground floor of Antwerp's extraordinary Gothic cathedral.

While Sebastian and Eamonn explored the dimly lit crypt, I took the opportunity to gaze at the church's three Baroque masterpieces by Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens, before we reconvened at the cathedral's bar and bistro, De Plek, moments later. The bar, inside a chapel of the cathedral, serves the church’s own brews, including a dark and blond ale. Only in beer-loving Belgium, I thought to myself, would you find beers served inside a church.

We were visiting Antwerp on day six of a seven-night family river cruise on the Rhine aboard A-Rosa Cruises ' A-Rosa Sena . Starting in Cologne, Germany, our voyage would take us northwest to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Dordrecht in the Netherlands, then to Antwerp before returning to Cologne.

Kerry Spencer/Travel + Leisure

River cruising and families don't — typically — go together, with most river cruise lines catering to a much older market and offering few family facilities, if any at all. German river cruise line A-Rosa Cruises has set about changing this with the launch of the family-orientated A-Rosa Sena, which debuted in June 2022.

The hybrid ship, partially electric-powered, is the largest on the Rhine, carrying up to 280 guests, and the vessel also boasts some nifty industry firsts. There's a jaunty kids' club; 12 large family cabins measuring 301 square feet, sleeping up to five with built-in bunkbeds; and a dedicated kids' splash pool on the top deck.

The main pool, adjacent to the splash pool, is almost 250 square feet, making it big enough to swim short laps. For grown-ups, there's a spa, a buzzy lounge, a sun deck bar, and a wine room for tasting local libations.

It's all part of A-Rosa's mission to draw more families to river cruising — and it's working, says Serkan Bilici, A-Rosa Sena's assistant hotel manager. "We currently have 32 children onboard, and all of our family cabins are occupied," Bilici told Travel + Leisure . "During summer, this was even higher, with over 40 children sailing, from babies up to teens, and guests from over 20 different countries."

"We also offered swimming lessons aboard selected sailings in August, which were very popular," Serkan adds. Indeed, there were babies, toddlers, older children, and teens on our weeklong October sailing.

The ship, which primarily operates in English and German, ensures that children are well taken care of. Typically, there are two hosts at the kids' club, and on our sailing, host Mai organized a "Meet the Captain" event, treasure hunts, and arts and crafts sessions. The children were given independence too, free to choose exactly how they spend their time at the club, with games, books, and plenty of space for young passengers to relax.

The kids' club is a real treat for families. Decorated with nautical-themed artwork, the space is soft and inviting, with children reading, coloring, and building dens while we played countless rounds of Snakes and Ladders with Sebastian.

It wasn't the family facilities alone that lured us in, though — our voyage, " Rhine Experience Amsterdam & Rotterdam ," was a big pull.

Admittedly, this northwest section of the Rhine, flat and more industrial, doesn't have the cinematic drama of the more southerly stretch, where vineyards, castles, and medieval towns flank the waterway. But with overnight stays in ludicrously pretty Amsterdam and modern and buzzy Rotterdam, our itinerary excited us.

We explored Cologne's ravishing twin-spire cathedral on a gloriously crisp fall day. Later, we roamed Rotterdam’s famous Piet Blom-designed cube houses and the city's excellent Maritime Museum, where the entire rooftop is dedicated to children.

Lesser-known Dordrecht, one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, felt like wandering a real-life fairytale. Compact and walkable, its cobbled streets are jam-packed with wonky, characterful merchant houses, antique stores, artisan workshops, and quaint cafes.

We split our day here between exploring the town's enchanting streets and De Biesbosch National Park on the edge of Dordrecht. If it hadn't been lashing down with rain, we would have cycled from Dordrecht's center to the reserve, which takes around 40 minutes. Instead, we made the breezy 10-minute journey via the local Waterbus service.

We'd just heard of De Biesbosch a few weeks earlier, yet it's among Europe's largest freshwater tidal zones, home to some 300 dam-building beavers. Made up of around 22,000 acres of streams, rivers, willow forests, marshes, and meadows, it was a welcome discovery.

As well as beavers, the reserve is rich in birdlife, including osprey, sea eagles, kingfishers, and kestrels. Canoes and boats can be hired and are the best way to explore this vast network of swampy paths and islands.

A-Rosa offers some excursions geared towards families, such as a trip to Antwerp Zoo or Madurodam, a miniature park in the Netherlands. We opted to do our own thing at each destination, carefully balancing time onboard with time in each river port.

"But I don’t want to leave the boat," Sebastian would grumble each morning we left the ship. However, his reluctance was soon forgotten as we explored family-friendly museums and thrilling nature reserves, and he was treated to a warm waffle with lashings of chocolate in Antwerp.

Early on in our voyage, after a less than harmonious night's sleep that saw Sebastian climb into our king-size bed at 2 a.m., I almost wept with gratitude when I remembered the kids' club had programming start right after breakfast. So, while Sebastian happily played, we caught a blissful extra hour of rest before heading to the NEMO Science Museum in Amsterdam, a big hit with families thanks to its five floors demystifying sciences.

Our penultimate day aboard saw us spend a whole day sailing. It was our chance to carve out time to relax. My husband joined a salmon-curing class while I visited the sauna, where I was instantly reminded that A-Rosa is a German tour operator — with mostly German passengers — meaning bathing suits are optional and rarely worn. I also indulged in a Thalgo facial, where Jelena, a former spa manager with Cunard and Celebrity Cruises, gave my dull-looking skin a blissful facial massage.

We accompanied Sebastian to a pizza-making class with some of the other kids led by the chef in the ship's pastry galley. His jaw dropped as he experienced a real-life Willy Wonka moment; only the chocolate-filled conveyor belts were replaced with vats of colorful churning ice cream.

As he ate his chaotic-looking pizza with his newfound friends, Eamonn and I pondered whether to choose a sliver of dressed salmon, pork goulash, or both for dinner. Another mealtime highlight was osso buco, a divine sauce-laden veal shank.

Veal was a reoccurring theme, with juicy, seared cuts of the meat served one evening and meatballs another. A nightly children's buffet also featured popular dishes such as spaghetti bolognese and macaroni and cheese. A highlight for Sebastian: the three homemade ice creams set out each evening, complete with various toppings. In addition to the main buffet restaurant, A-Rosa Sena has a specialty steak restaurant where passengers can dine on salmon sashimi and beef entrecôte for an additional fee.

One evening, we dined off the ship in Amsterdam and ate supper at a cozy bistro on a corner of Prinsengracht. Dining on bowls of lightly curried mussels at a sun-dappled canal-side table, we imagined milestones and romantic dinners were celebrated over the restaurant's intimate candlelit tables inside.

Later, instead of joining the quiz in the ship's lounge, we crashed out in our cabin to watch one of the family movies ("Peter Rabbit" was selected by Sebastian). Our Deck 3 room had a balcony, plenty of closet space, a sofa bed, and a flatscreen TV as big as you'd find in any luxury hotel. Some nights, we drifted to sleep with the blackout curtains slightly ajar, allowing moonlight to drift in as we lazily floated along the Rhine. Thinking of our entire trip, traveling to five cities in three countries over eight days any other way would have been, frankly, whiplash-inducing and undoubtedly exhausting, But this way, taking in the gentle bends of the Rhine, felt unhurried, perfectly punctuated with cities that matched the energy and curiosity of our almost 6-year-old.

In the end, it wasn't just the sights that made the trip memorable, but the serene pace of the river that allowed us to truly savor each moment with our son.

'You're not fighting the crowds' in Europe when you visit on a river cruise

one day cruise in europe

Europe has no shortage of marquee tourist hot spots , but Diamond Meadows’ first river cruise there didn’t include them.

The 28-year-old graduate student took a cruise along the Rhine and Moselle rivers that took her to cities like Koblenz and Trier in Germany (she supplemented the sailing with train travel around Austria, Switzerland and elsewhere).

Meadows was traveling with her mom and her mom’s boss, who uses a wheelchair. The group chose the CroisiEurope Cruises sailing for the ease of sailing with a mobility device . But she discovered other upsides.

“It takes you exactly into the heart of the city,” said Meadows, who is based in Tennessee. Their roughly 160-guest vessel offered convenient drop-offs in smaller destinations, allowing them “to access so much more.”

Many European destinations were packed with tourists last summer . But river cruises in the continent can offer a more laid-back way to travel with small ships visiting a mix of popular and less-crowded ports.

Are river cruises better than ocean cruises?

Jen Campbell Boles, founder of the travel agency Explore More Family Travel, said that while cruising in general is a “great value for seeing Europe,” river sailings are particularly immersive. “One quote we always use in the travel industry is, ‘Ocean cruise liners take you to the destination, river cruises take us through the destination,’” she said.

Passengers visit not only major cities but also quaint villages and often disembark within walking distance of attractions. When they are done exploring, they return to a ship with an average of 150 guests.

“It's more intimate, it's cozier,” said Campbell Boles. “You're not fighting the crowds, obviously.”

That was part of the draw for Jim Jones, 57, who took Avalon Waterways river cruises with his wife in 2011 and 2014.

“The smaller cities were an attraction,” said Jones, who is based in Phoenix and works for a software company. He enjoyed visiting Avignon in the south of France, for example, which was once the seat of the papacy . “I’m a total history geek,” he said. On their first cruise, he recalled, “just about every town” they visited had a farmers’ market, allowing them to sample local food.

'Access to hidden-gem ports': Why this luxury yacht is the best option for beach lovers

Unlike ocean cruise ships, with their large casinos and plentiful bars, onboard “it was very relaxed and a much slower pace.”

River cruise vessels tend to have “less bells and whistles,” Campbell Boles said (though she added that guests get a more personalized experience as a result of their small size).

Adam Duckworth, president and founder of Travelmation, echoed that. He said the cruises are less about the ship than where it’s going. “This is truly an experience about itineraries.”

Are European river cruises cheaper than land-based trips?

While travelers can find land-based accommodations that are less expensive than river cruises, there are other factors to consider.

River cruises tend to bundle more costs, such as alcohol in the fare, than a mainstream ocean cruise line, Duckworth said (though exact policies vary by line). At least one excursion per day is typically included, as well, Campbell Boles added.

She said demand for Europe is still “through the roof” and land-based pricing is particularly high. “Even if you're staying in the highest category stateroom or suite, you're spending less than an equivalent hotel,” she said.

Are luxury cruise ships worth the money? We did the math for Silversea's Silver Nova.

Would you spend $14,000 on a cruise? Here's why these travelers splurged.

Transportation from one destination to another is also built into a river cruise, whereas travelers might have to take a train or make other arrangements to visit a mix of places. “I mean that really adds up in Europe, so this is a great way to see a lot more variety,” Campbell Boles said.

Passengers can also add pre- and post-cruise stays, allowing them to “get the best of both worlds.”

“What we say is that a river cruise oftentimes can be a premium product,” added Duckworth. “But for what you're experiencing – the comfort, the (lower) stress, the luxurious experience on board – we find it to be actually the best value through Europe from our experience.”

Are European river cruises kid-friendly?

Since river cruises require a certain amount of free time – most are at least seven days long – they have tended to be popular with older guests, according to Duckworth.

But in the past couple of years, he has noticed more multigenerational travel in the sector. “We're seeing grandparents bring their grandkids, we're seeing young professionals go on a river in Europe for the first time,” Duckworth said.

Some operators have offerings that are particularly well-suited to younger guests. Adventures by Disney offers river cruises with AmaWaterways, and Uniworld Boutique River Cruises has a Generations Collection .

How long should I go on a cruise?: How long and short cruises compare

Even if programming is curated with kids in mind, though, Duckworth cautioned that river cruise vessels don’t offer the same breadth of amenities as large ocean ships. “If your kids want to go to a waterpark and they want to go on a FlowRider and they want to play putt-putt all day, there are great lines for you, but a European river cruise is probably not one of them currently,” he said.

Some lines also don’t allow kids or have varying age requirements, so it’s important to do some research beforehand.

For those going for the first time, Campbell Boles suggested starting with a cruise on the Danube or Rhine since they are “kind of the most iconic.”

“I mean, it’s Europe,” she added. “It’s going to be great no matter what river you go on.”

Top Europe FAQs

Where can I cruise to in Europe?

A Celebrity European cruise vacation takes you to some of the most exciting cities in the world, from Iceland and the Fjords in Northern Europe to the Mediterranean,  the Canary Islands and the stunning Greek Isles. You’ll set sail on spectacular new adventures on any European cruise with Celebrity.

We depart from eight incredible ports in Europe including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Venice, and Rome just to name a few. There are plenty of ways to embrace the best of everything in the region. View our European itineraries for more details.

When’s the best time to cruise?

We offer a wide variety of Europe itineraries with our newest Edge-class ships sailing during the summer and Celebrity Infinity year round. Each region of Europe offers different experiences guests can enjoy.

Enjoy the quintessential Mediterranean summer with spectacular beaches, warm weather, and delicious food, or sail through the Norwegian fjords between May and August, when they are at their most beautiful. Visit unique destinations like the Holy Land in the cooler months, from February to April.

How long are European cruises?

From 4-night getaways to 14-night sailings, we have options for everyone in Europe year round. Get away for a weekend to Belgium and the Netherlands or set off on a week-long adventure to the Mediterranean, Norwegian Fjords or the exquisite paradise of the Canary Islands.

What should I pack?

What to pack for a cruise to Europe depends on where you’re headed, and when. For the Mediterranean in summer, you’ll need beachwear, a sun hat, and light clothes for a hot climate. The British Isles, on the other hand, is often cool and damp, even in the height of summer, so you should pack a light waterproof jacket. The same applies to Iceland, Ireland, and Scandinavia. You could be basking in hot sunshine, but there are no guarantees.

If you’re traveling as the seasons change, in April and May, or between September and November, you’ll need to pack for all eventualities. Remember to include comfortable shoes for walking around ruins and through old castles, and something to cover your shoulders if you want to go inside churches and mosques.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through cover ups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

What can I see while I’m there?

Yes, you can request seat assignments in instances where the airline makes them available to Celebrity Cruises®. Most air carriers charge a fee for early seat assignment requests and when this occurs you will be directed to contact the airline directly to confirm your seating.

Europe has a rich, diverse mix of cultures and countries that you can immerse yourself in. See medieval towns like Tallinn, Estonia, or chic Scandinavian capitals such as Stockholm and Copenhagen.

In the Mediterranean, visit Rome, Barcelona, Athens, Florence, and Pisa for a culture and history fix. You will see astonishing natural beauty, too, from geysers and volcanoes in Iceland to the rolling green hills of Ireland, and the majestic scenery of the Norwegian fjords.

Pick an itinerary that matches your interests and pace yourself; some places are best explored with a guide, while in others, it can be fun to just sit and people-watch with a glass of local wine or a cold beer.

Should I book tours ahead of time?

If you are traveling in peak season, we recommend you book your Shore Excursions through My Celebrity Cruises as soon as you confirm your sailing as many attractions in Europe are extremely popular.

Booking a shore excursion with Celebrity also means you’ll be visiting attractions with a professional guide, and on a tour that guarantees to return you to the ship on time.

Whether you're looking for a private, customizable experience, a carefully curated guided tour with a small group, or an unforgettable trip to iconic local landmarks, we have the right option to discover any destination, granting in-depth knowledge, expertise, and a truly extraordinary experience.

Can I get around with English?

Many languages are spoken in Europe, from French, German, Italian, and Spanish to Estonian, Swedish, and Danish. Most people working in the hospitality industry speak at least some English.

Is a European cruise good for families?

A cruise to Europe is a great family vacation option as kids will be exposed to multiple cultures, not to mention millennia of history and different cuisines. You’ll find attractions that are great fun for the whole family, from the pretty Tivoli Gardens amusement park in Copenhagen to the ABBA Museum in Stockholm.

Kids will love exploring castles in Scotland and Ireland, basking in the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, or spotting whales on a boat tour. The Norwegian fjords are packed with outdoor activities such as RIB rides, hikes, and kayaking, while a trip to the Mediterranean is a fantastic way to make ancient history come to life for kids in locations like the Colosseum in Rome, or the Parthenon in Athens.

Do I need a visa to cruise to Europe?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .

The vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries.

This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

What type of currency will I need?

Most, but not all countries in Europe use the Euro as their official currency. All the places you will visit on your European cruise will have ATMs, and credit cards are widely accepted. Carry cash for things like taxi fares or purchases in markets. Some countries don’t use the Euro; in Britain, for example, the currency is the pound, while Sweden and Turkey both have their own currencies.

The 10 Most Affordable Cities in Europe to Visit This Year

Inflation effects us all, but travel remains a high priority for many searching for some respite from home stresses. Ahead of the summer holidays, the United Kingdom Post Office has released their annual City Costs Barometer , showcasing the best destinations to visit that won’t break the bank.

For the 17th year running, the barometer takes data from 37 different cities across Europe, analyzing prices to calculate the most affordable city break destinations. The survey calculates the average cost for a two-night weekend stay, taking into account prices for a visit to a top heritage tourist attraction, a museum, a sightseeing bus tour, and a public transport travel card valid for the duration of the stay. Food and drink costs included in the sums range from a regular cup of filter coffee to a three-course evening meal for two people, including house wine.

The data from this survey should prove helpful to those looking to book a cheap destination holiday this summer. The interest in city breaks has grown this year in the UK, with two in five Brits opting for a city break for their next holiday, but the appeal is universal. And, this data shows that prices are down in 60 percent of cities featured, thanks to significant accommodation price drops around the continent.

Bird's eye view of Vilnius old town from Gediminas' Tower Lithuania

Vilnius is one of Europe's most underrated cities for its Cathedral and epic hiking.

The winning city for 2024 is the Lithuanian capital. Vilnius previously held the crown of best value city in 2015, 2019, and 2020, but last year only just lost out on first place to Lisbon . Its fourth win is a result of low prices across the board—the cost of a weekend racks up to about $300, more than 10 percent lower than the runner-up city, and less than half the cost of 18 out of the 37 cities featured.

Vilnius has grown in popularity recently—we named it one of Europe’s most underrated cities to visit. There are plenty of hikes to take in the surrounding countryside, many of which offer epic vistas over the city (like Gediminas Hill), and don’t skip a visit to the Vilnius Cathedral or the secret St. James Church bell tower.

In second place comes last year’s winner. Thanks to a 26 percent rise in the average accommodation cost, Lisbon slipped down a rank for 2024. The average cost for two nights in three-star accommodation is $193 this year, compared to $150 last year, raising the total cost to $335. The city is one of just three in Western European to make the top ten.

tower of Chamber of commerce buildings at central town square in Lille France

Lille, France takes third place and is notable as an affordable alternative to Paris.

In more surprising news, Lille came in third place, shooting up seven places from 10 in 2023. This is largely due to a 30 percent fall in costs, seeing the average cost of accommodation drop from $235 to $166. Interest in the French city has surged in recent years as travelers from London seek a more pocket-friendly alternative to Paris —Lille is less than 90 minutes away from London via Eurostar.

Athens dropped from fourth to fifth place, while Riga, Budapest , Bratislava, Prague , and Warsaw fill in the rest of the top 10. The list of Europe’s most expensive cities is equally as interesting—Amsterdam retains its top spot for another year with an average cost of $850 per weekend, closely followed by Belfast ($800), Edinburgh ($765), and Helsinki ($745).

Krakow Old Town town houses at Main Square

Krakow, Poland can, in parts, be mistaken for Rome.

Starting with the cheapest, the top 10 European cities for overall value in 2024 are:

  • Vilnius, Lithuania
  • Lisbon, Portugal
  • Lille, France
  • Krakow, Poland
  • Athens, Greece
  • Riga, Latvia
  • Budapest, Hungary
  • Bratislava, Slovakia
  • Prague, Czech Republic
  • Warsaw, Poland
