New Order is a notorious post-punk and electro dance music band formed in 1980 by the remaining members of Joy Division following Ian Curtis’ death. With critical acclaim, a devoted fan base, and strong commercial appeal, the band oozes confidence and influence, hailing from Manchester, England.

In 1976 singer Ian Curtis, guitarist/keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, and drummer Stephen Morris formed the post-punk band Joy Division after attending a Sex Pistols show. Following a hugely successful debut album “Unknown Pleasures” in 1979 and a highly anticipated follow-up “Closer”, lead singer Curtis committed suicide on 18 May 1980. It was the day before the band had scheduled to embark on their first American tour, however after Curtis' death, members disbanded and looked for other outlets for their musicality. New Order was subsequently born, named after a Guardian article entitled “The People’s New Order of Kampuchea”, with Sumner taking over the role as vocalist. Stephen Morris’ girlfriend Gillian Gilbert was added to the lineup in late 1980 in time for New Order’s debut single “Ceremony”. Borrowing in large part the dark, moody allure of Joy Division’s sound, the band’s debut full-length “Movement” became the first to feature prominent use of synthesisers and became popular in the club scene.

In aid of their elusive, mysterious image, following a year-long hiatus, New Order released the landmark hit single “Blue Monday” in 1983 with its distinctive computer disk design. The record became the highest-selling 12” of all time for its combination of aesthetically-cold lyrics and drum pad produced club rhythms. The studio album “Power, Corruption and Lies” followed in 1983 highlighting the influence of techno, and notably Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder. Following the release New Order signed a U.S. contract with Quince Jones’ Qwest label, who issued the band’s third-full length “Low-Life” in 1985. The “Low-Life” album packaging was the first to feature photos and band info, and marked a move by New Order to connect with their fans.

The full-length “Brotherhood” arrived in 1986, followed by their U.S. breakthrough album “Substance”, a collection of singles and remixes. New Order’s most club-orientated album arrived in 1989 entitled “Technique”, which found its way on to many dance floors across the world aided by the hits “Fine Time” and “Round and Round”. In 1990 the group recorded the English World Cup Football Anthem “World in Motion”, following which the band took an extended hiatus. During this time Morris and Gilbert formed the Other Two, Hook founded the group Revenge, and Sumner collaborated with Johnny Marr and Neil Tennant in the band Electronic.

When New Order did return in 1993 they earned their biggest hit to date “Regret” taken from the album “Republic”. Following a period of uncertainty in which Sumner recorded a second Electronic LP and Hook formed the band Monaco, the band release the single “Brutal” which was later used on the soundtrack to the 2000 film “The Beach”. The studio album “Get Ready” appeared later in 2000, followed by extensive touring, and “Waiting for the Sirens’ Call” in 2005.

Live reviews

It is a true comfort to the soul to know that such a talented band as New Order is still out there today performing their music. New Order has been known to perform dark, dismal tunes in the style of post-punk that resembles the sound of their previous band, Joy Division, as well as perform pure pop oriented dance music that will want to make the audience bounce right out of their seat.

At a New Order performance a grand array of lights sets the mood to each song while video footage is projected on a screen behind the band depicting images that evoke emotions corresponding to the tone of the song being performed. New Order has always been looked at as a collaborative process between the band members with each member playing an integral part in the music. Lead singer and guitarist, Bernard Sumner, often plays short-choppy guitar riffs that blend in well with the drummer’s, Stephen Morris, machine-like drumming, and the keyboardist, Gillian Gilbert, lays down a lush soundscape to the music with her synths. Although bass player, Peter Hook, is no longer in the band, Tom Chapman manages to do a fine job providing the melodic, intricate bass lines that define much of New Order’s sound. New Order’s most recent setlist draws from a selection throughout their whole career, as well as a few covers from their previous band, Joy Division, accurately performing such classics as, “Transmission”, “Atmosphere”, and “Love Will Tear Us Apart”. The setlist also contains one or two selections from their most recent album, Lost Sirens.

New Order is recognized as one of the most influential and innovative bands of their generation still performing, and rightfully so. A few years back Q magazine included New Order on their list of “50 Bands To See Before You Die”. After seeing them perform last year at Chastain Park I can vouch for Q magazine’s declaration of New Order being one of the best bands out there to see live.

I spent much of the 80's listening to New Order. I bought "Blue Monday" because the cover was (and still is) very cool. I think it was my first 12" single. Their early albums were minimalist synth-driven pop tunes reflecting lonliness and angst. Perfect for a Bay-Area kid trapped in Texas.

And so I keep seeing them live hoping for a reboot of punchy bass, keyboard hooks and crunchy giuitar, and every time they disappoint.

Friday night Lucy once again viciously yanked the football from this hopeful Charlie Brown.

The pre-band music was a DJ playing an unidentifiable mix of drum-n-bass crap where all you could really hear was the ... well, drum-n-bass.

The opening band was Politica, whom I could not really pay attention to because we were holding GA seats for my niece and her friends. I was stressing because trying to hold seats at the Greek is like reserving spots in an Elementary School playground. There are cement benches with spray-painted numbers 'suggesting' seat assignments. We had a blanket spread but for some reason that did not stop the neighbors from gradually pushing it aside.

But, I digress.

New Order opened with a song I did not know. The song did continue with the mind-numbing disco beat of the DJ. They had decided this was a dance party. They played several songs from the part of their career I had stopped following, but every song had the accompanying disco drumbeat mixed way over the other instruments.

I said fuck it and fired up "Pokemon-Go" on my phone.

After all was said and done they had played 4 songs I knew and a stack-o-crap from their 90's catalog.

Stay tuned for next Friday's review of "Peter Hook and the Light" which promises to be the 'anti-New Order' remedy for this crappy band.

New Order @ Radio City Music Hall. First off, my seats were as far back as you can go, but still had a great time. They are an Iconic band and the songs still resonate. 17 song set, including two songs from Joy Division ( Love will tear us apart finished the set ) They played 3 songs from the new album ( MUSIC COMPLETE ) and they sounded great. Highlight of the show was the stirring sound of " BLUE MONDAY" I could hear that song everyday and still love it as much today as I did when I first heard it. They had a few different renditions of " True Faith and Bizarre Love Triangle" where the electroic beat was more prominate than the bass. The one thing I would say that is so very different is the bass. I like Phil Cunningham, but his bass is not the sound of peter hook. Loved the show and to see them at RCMH was something special.

Amazing to see New Order for the second time in my Life. The first time I saw them was on México City. This time I has THE chance to catch them in San Francisco and got to admit that the venue was really nice. But the audience was very lazo at the beggining. American friends, if you go to a rock show, get crazy (in a good way) STAND UP! This is a rock and roll show, not a Movie!!! At the end, New Order was sooo cool and gave us a moment for history, the cover of Scott Mckenzie, San Francisco... That was history. Nothig more to say.

Awesomely done. New Order in The City, were freaking amazing. I had the pleasure to see Bernard and the gang years ago. They delivered then and they don't disappoint now. Busted out all the classics, Ceremony, True Faith, Bizarre Love Triangle. Dug deep and even pulled a couple of Joy Division gems. Spending an evening with New Order is an event not to be missed. Closing with "Love will Tear Us Apart", & "Everything's Gone Green" just magical. Enjoy with friends.

Impresionante! Excelente!

Absolutely incredible.... I was skeptical of seeing New Order without Peter Hook, but they were phenomenal. This was my fourth time seeing them, and they can be up or down, but they really brought it. New arrangements of their classics and choice material from the new album. An incredible light and video show that really captures the alienation and wonder of modern life that has been the band's concern for years. If you get a chance, go.

Loved it !!

Acoustics were not great

Couldn't pick out Elly Jackson's singing and struggled to hear Barney's guitar

Still a great night and can't stop listening to Music Complete.

Can't believe that they ran out of Large T Shirts -99% of the crowd were middle aged ,slightly overweight men (me included !)Who did they expect to turn up?

The show was electric, sold out show. It felt like I was seeing them for the first time, the last time was 20 plus years ago at Red Rocks Ampatheatre in Denver, CO. The show had a mix of joy division and New Order. Great set of music ending with Love Will Tear Us Apart. Great memories and a show I will never forget.

Jam-packed, slick set from New Order that mostly featured tracks from their new album, Music Complete, but also contained the hits from their early days. The sound was brilliant and the Civic was a great venue for them. Their set was 1hr 45 mins and it flew by! Loved the encore that featured two Joy Division songs.

Meanwhile, Daniel Kessler recently responded to New Order bandmember Peter Hook’ s past claim that he applied to become  Interpol ‘s new bassist following the departure of Carlos Dengler.

Dengler departed the NYC indie outfit back in 2010 , having been a member since the group’s formation in 1997. Interpol continued as a trio, though their live shows feature additional touring musicians.

Shortly after Dengler quit, former New Order bassist Hook told  LA Weekly  that he’d “applied” to replace the ex-member but claimed he “didn’t get picked”. The musician added: “I applied as Peter Hook, and they turned me down.”

Hook told the outlet at the time that Interpol had released “an internet application form to be a bass player”. The comments came after the interviewer noted that the New Yorkers had a “Joy Division-sounding” style.

Responding to the comparison, Hook said: “I don’t mind it, it has to be taken as a compliment.”

Speaking to  NME  for the ‘Does Rock ‘N’ Roll Kill Braincells?!’ quiz  last month, guitarist Kessler said he wasn’t aware that Hook had put himself forward for the role some 12 years ago.

“I heard some weird rumblings as far as the story and the rumour behind it, but I don’t think I even knew that he supposedly applied online,” he explained.

“I don’t even know to whom or where, but we never received anything and we never had such a discussion.”

In a press statement, Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott expressed his excitement for the upcoming stadium tour, and said, “DEF LEPPARD and JOURNEY will be reuniting and hitting the road together for the Summer Stadium Tour with Steve Miller, Cheap Trick & Heart on select shows, which makes for an amazing night of music!”
