How to Increase Party Speed/Move Faster in Mount and Blade: Bannerlord

Party speed is something that is going to affect your whole play-through in Mount and Blade: Bannerlord. You are going to have to move across the map basically the entire time that you play. Whether you plan on being a trader, bandit, lord or conqueror it is always ideal to move as fast as possible on the main map.

This guide will show you some of the ways that you can increase your party speed in Bannerlord to help you get to that castle defense even quicker, or move forth to take settlements for yourself and your faction.

What is the Party Speed in Bannerlord and What Affects it?

In Mount and Blade: Bannerlord when you are not in a town or participating in a battle you will find yourself on the main map screen. When you select a destination you can see that your entire party will be moving across the map, identified as your character model. You can also see that there are other parties moving across the map. Your party speed is the speed at which you can move around on this map. This has nothing to do with how fast you will be able to physically move within a battle.

There are a range of factors that can influence how fast (or slow) your party moves on the map. Factors such as the total amount of trade goods and their weight within your inventory, what types of troops you have in your party, the terrain you are walking on and even the time of day! In terms of terrain and time of day; you may have already noticed that your party is moving slower whilst travelling through forest areas. There is also a negative party speed buff when moving through snowy areas and through the desert as well. Planning your route can be the difference between that army catching up to you, or you leaving them in the dust.

Ways to Increase Party Speed in Bannerlord

There are multiple ways that you can improve the speed at which your party travels on the map. I will go over a few of them in dot points to make it clearer what you need to do, then go into detail if necessary.

Reduce Weight of Inventory

The weight of all of the items in your inventory actually has an impact on how fast your party can move in Mount and Blade Bannerlord. On the trade screen you can see in each trade good you purchase there is a weight value associated with it. All of the items together will affect how fast you can travel. Along with a general weight limit shown at the top of the trade screen, you should try to keep it low if you want to move around fast.

If you’re planning on trading across the world map, you are probably just going to have to bite the bullet and take the slow movement speed. Either that, or buy a bunch of horses to carry the trade goods.

Avoid Holding on to Herd Animals

While we are on the point of trade there is another thing you can do in order to keep party speed high. You should try to avoid bringing herd animals such as sheep or cows along with you on your journeys. Whilst it may be a good idea to have 1 or 2 as a backup for when the food stocks run low, they will slow your party down significantly. So only bring these animals when you think it is absolutely necessary.

Change Your Game Difficulty Settings

If you want a quick way to increase your party speed you can do this within the game settings. When you first set up your campaign there are a few settings to choose from. One of these settings affects the speed at which your party can travel. If you’re halfway through a playthrough fear not! You can still change these settings in the middle of the game. To do this open up the Pause menu with the ESC key. Now, select the Campaign Options . On this screen you should see the option Map Movement Speed near the bottom of the options menu.

There are three different speed options you can select under Map Movement Speed . This will make your party either the default speed (hardest), 5% faster (Easy) or 10% faster (Very Easy). Experiment with the settings and find the one that suits you. If you want to move as fast as possible this setting is a must-change.

Recruit Lots of Calvary Units and Equip a Horse!

Did you know that the type of units that you have apart of your army actually affect how fast you can move? If you have a lot of infantry units as opposed to a lot of troops on horseback then you are going to move a lot slower. An entire army of cavalry will speed through the countryside, catching up to everything in front of it and being able to escape any threats coming their way.

If you are really interested in moving around the map fast, you’re going to have to grab a lot of units that are riding horses. Building on this, you should also equip a horse for your player character. You will move instantly a lot faster if you equip a horse to your character rather than running around on foot.

Skills and Culture Bonuses that Effect Party Speed

There are a few different in-game mechanics that can influence how fast your party can move on the world map. To clear something up straight away, there is no skill that you can increase which relates to party speed. That isn’t to say it doesn’t help to level them up in terms of perks you can unlock, but raising your athletics, riding or scouting skill will not increase your party speed on it’s own. (The only exception to this is the Scouting skill after you get the perk at level 275 called Uncanny Insight). As I said, there are perks and also culture specific bonuses that will increase your parties speed.

When you create your character you are tasked with choosing your character’s culture. Along with the starting location of your character, each culture has different advantages and disadvantages. The two cultures that affect party speed and their bonuses are:

  • Battanians: If your choose the Battanian culture your party will move 50% faster through forest areas. Great for quick getaways or cornering your enemies.
  • Aserai : The Aserai culture has the benefit of having absolutely no speed penalty in desert terrains. Although this is only really helpful for that side of the map, it can give you an easy end of the map to defend or claim for yourself.

Get Perks to Increase Party Speed in Bannerlord’s Map

Another easy way to get that speed level up is by taking some of the speed-related perks. There are a few different perks across the various skills to pick through. I’ll save you the trouble of seeking them out and list all of the party-speed related perks right here:

Whilst every perk doesn’t increase party speed, they will all help keep you moving quicker across the map.

Keep Morale High

Your party’s morale will also have a direct effect on how fast your party can move on the map. A happy army is a fast army. Some of the ways you can ensure that morale stays high withing your army is:

  • Through the many perks which increase morale in an army (most of them are in Leadership)
  • Continuously win battles
  • Have a wide variety of different foods available in your inventory
  • Don’t recruit bandit troops or prisoners

If you really want to up the speed instantly you are probably best equipping a horse to your character and changing the campaign difficulty options as mentioned. Throughout your play-through you are going to get faster and faster as long as you are increasing your characters riding and scouting skills and getting the perks related to party speed. Keep an eye on perks surrounding party/movement speed and grab them when you can in order to become the fastest party in Calradia!

Bannerlord Online/Travel speed (Map speed)

This page is regarding the travel speed on the campaign map of Bannerlord Online . This does not affect battles, walking in cities, villages and so on.

Travel speed on campaign map [ ]

The base speed is 3.0. For each troop in your Party, your travel speed gets reduced by 0.01. This also includes wounded troops.

Being wounded or having wounded troops does not cause additional loss in travel speed.

Animals, like pigs, sheep and cows decrease travel speed.

Horses in item inventory may impact travel speed.

Mounted troops may impact travel speed. This depends on skill perks.

Other sources that can cause a loss of movement speed:

  • Weight mechanics: Read about weight mechanics HERE ;
  • Forests: Causing the player party to decrease in movement speed;
  • Snow: Also causing the player party to decrease in movement speed, although it has less penalty than in Forests;
  • Crossing bridges: Another way to slow down your travel speed.

So you’ve finally established a trade route in your merchant playthrough of Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord , moving cheap livestock from the open plains to the dense cities. Its success depends on your ability to move goods back and forth quickly. While paying troop wages to keep your assets safe. Or maybe you’re taking a trip through the far east to pick up horse archers only to find out your home has been attacked in the far west. For both of these scenarios, you need to move quickly. This Bannerlord Speed guide explains some of the things that might be slowing you down, with tips about how to make your party as fast as possible in Bannerlord.

What Affects Speed in Bannerlord?

Hovering over the speed in Bannerlord stat at the bottom right of your UI will show exactly which factors are contributing to or detracting from your current speed. There are many factors that can alter your speed, but the following are the main contributions, and explanations about how to make them work for you:

Encumbrance 

Like any video game, the amount of weight you’re carrying directly affects how quickly you move. You can see your party’s current weight and maximum weight displayed in the top right of the Inventory (I) screen, as well as the trade screen in towns. Bannerlord does not prohibit you from going over your maximum weight value; it simply slows down your party more and more until you’ve reached the lowest possible speed in Bannerlord (1.0). You can overcome encumbrance by simply getting rid of some of the goods you’re carrying, but hiring more soldiers, and increasing the number of pack animals (see next entry).

Pack Animals 

Logically, buying more mules and sumpter horses will allow you to carry more goods. The amount of weight each animal can carry is listed in its description when you mouse over its icon, though it’s always 100 unless it’s ‘lame’. Be advised: simply buying a ton of pack animals isn’t a direct answer to your speed in Bannerlord problem.

If the amount of animals you own exceeds your party by too many, you incur what’s called a ‘Herd’ penalty. Just as it would be in real life, if you don’t have enough soldiers to wrangle those pack animals, traveling with them becomes a chore, and this leads to the single largest penalty against your speed in Bannerlord in the game. Ideally, you want 1.5 times the amount of pack animals as soldiers, at most (e.g. 150 animals for 100 soldiers). Also, note that selling these animals will affect encumbrance, so find a balance between the two if you want to carry more goods but still be able to move fast.

The Scouting skill is the only one that is directly related to your speed in Bannerlord in moving across the map. To increase speed, you always want the companion with the highest scouting skill. As your party’s scout, even if that’s your character. Perks throughout this tree will increase speed in Bannerlord in various scenarios. As well as moving faster at night, or through the desert. There are a few other skills with perks that can affect you less indirectly. You’ll find some perks that allow your party to carry more weight, incur less of an encumbrance penalty, move faster with high morale, and move faster when chasing or running from other parties. The breadth of these is too lengthy for this post, but you can find them simply by clicking through the perks and reading about their benefits, as you would normally. 

Percentage of Cavalry

The amount of cavalry you have compared to ground troops greatly affects your parties’ speed. If you want to have the fastest party possible, maintain a 2-to-1 ratio of horsemen versus infantry and archers. This includes both horse archers and melee cavalry.

Traveling across what the game considers rough terrain can slow down your party considerably. This includes snow, desert, forest, and hills. As mentioned, certain perks negate these obstacles and allow your party to navigate them with less of a penalty. There are also certain faction/race perks that give you a permanent bonus on the terrain of their respective homelands. For instance, the Aserai, being desert folk, incur less of a penalty when moving through the desert; the Battanians, being from a land full of trees, incur less of a penalty when moving through forests. 

Time of Day 

Naturally, all parties move across the map much slower at night. Combined with the other factors mentioned above, the nighttime can really bring your party to a crawl. This can be offset simply by planning trips for the day and resting your party at night. Just like feudal lords did in real life. You can also find a perk in the scouting tree. Which makes your party travel faster during the night at the cost of traveling slower during the day (and vice versa).

The Ideal Setup for Speed in Bannerlord

The ideal setup would have mostly horsemen, just enough pack animals to carry your inventory. Then, traveling during the day, across flat plains. Where “normal” speed in Bannerlord in the game is about 4.2-4.7 in a well-balanced party. Also, you can see speeds as high as 6.4 in these circumstances. Plan your trade routes for places that have lots of flatlands between them. And, don’t be afraid to travel what seems like a longer route if you can avoid forests. You’ll probably make a better time even if the trip seems out of the way.

While in the overworld of Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord , each party is represented by a single leader moving across the map. There is the fast-forward button which helps longer travels be accomplished much sooner. While the fast-forward button speeds your character up, it also speeds everything up, and the differences in speed between you and other parties are still clear.

Having a faster movement speed will help you outrun stronger enemies should they be chasing you. If a faster party chases a slower one, there is little that can be done to escape a persistent foe. On the other hand, many easy targets you may be chasing down have a better chance of outrunning you and escaping with valuable loot.

What Effects Movement Speed

Your movement speed is affected in small amounts by multiple factors, simply being better about one way may give you a small boost but won't result in a noticeably faster movement speed. These factors include your party's size , the weight of what your party is carrying, prisoners, the number of horses, the terrain, whether it is day or night, and individual perks and skills . Should you also be leading a very large army, speed is out of the question, and you'll be walking to whichever castle is your target.

All parties in the overworld move slower during nighttime. This is unavoidable, but does affect everyone equally , and shouldn't affect a chase that went into the night. Other terrain elements also affect your speed such as moving through a forest instead of a flat plain. Should your character be of Battanian origin, the forest effect is slightly negated, otherwise these effects or unavoidable .

Speeding Up Your Party

Your party's speed is heavily influenced by the number of troops walking in the party. As you get more troops, your party will slow down due to the number of units . While cavalry units help your movement speed, infantry units' movement speed can be countered by having extra horses in your inventory. Horses come in two types, speed or beast of burden. Having many extra speed-type horses in your inventory can greatly increase your movement speed, and your goal should be to have as many horses as you have party members. This benefit also applies to cavalry units as they ride speed-type horses.

Having many prisoners will also slow down your party, so it's best to ransom them at the nearest tavern or recruit them into your own party. While there is a limit to your carrying capacity, the more items you have the slower your party will move, even if it's well below the carrying capacity . It's best to constantly sell unused items at the nearest merchants to help keep your party fast.

There is also the final skill of the Scout tree, Uncanny Insight. This skill increases your movement speed by .1 % for every skill over 200. While this bonus seems insignificant and difficult to get, it is very worthwhile to get in the late game when you have many skills maxed out. Along with focusing your party's inventory and makeup to prioritize movement speed, this skill will only further the bonuses. In the campaign settings menu , there is also the option to increase your parties' movement speed while not affecting others in the world.

How to Speed Up Time in Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord

Wondering if you can speed up time in mount & blade ii: bannerlord here’s what you need to know..

The short answer is yes, you can speed up time in Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord , as long as you’re on the main map or in a city/settlement. But you should be very, very cautious about fast-forwarding on the map since enemies can catch up with you. You might not be able to think at double speed but the AI certainly can.

So, there are three ways to speed up time. For the safe option, go to a town/settlement and from the main select “Wait here for some time.” Time will move at double speed, though you’ll have to pay a daily gold free.

For the cheaper but more dangerous option, go to the main map and look for the pause, play and fast forward buttons at the bottom of the screen. On Xbox you’ll need to hit “B” to switch to cursor mode. Then, click on the fast forward button and you’re good to go. Time will be accelerated until a significant event happens.

Significant like what? Like unexpectedly getting into a fight, for example. A gang of bandits may decide you’re easy pickings and descend upon you while you’re sitting there watching day roll into night-time.

Or if you just want to get somewhere quickly, double click/double press and time will speed up until you get where you want to be. Again, this is not the same thing as increasing your party’s travel speed – everyone is accelerated, friends and enemies alike. If you want to make your party faster compared to other people, you’ll have to invest in some skill upgrades and the like.

15 Amprela – Northern Empire

  • Two Villages
  • Strong military for or against Khuzait.

Another border town, Amprela is located on the very edge of the Northern Empire, close to Sturgian and Khuzait territory. It is well supplied, with three trade-bound fiefs, plenty of food, and some iron and hardwood for smithing.

While Amprela isn’t the safest town, most approaches require enemy armies to traverse bridges or narrow stretches of land that can be easily defended . A couple of castles also act as a buffer area, sometimes allowing Amprela to escape becoming the first target once war breaks out.

14 Dunglanys - Battania

  • Three Villages
  • Central for Battanian trade

With a decent starting prosperity of 4000, Dunglanys is located right in the heart of Battanian lands. As a result, it is fairly vulnerable to an attack but also benefits from a total of six trade-bound villages, including two grain and two grape-producing settlements that can keep the town well supplied.

Food should not be a problem for Dunglany,- and coupled with a narrow approach on either side, sieges are difficult to pull off. Overall, a decent city to own and invest in.

13 Askar – Aserai

  • Difficult to expand but difficult to take

Placed right in the middle of the southern desert, Askar is about as far away from any frontline that the player can get. That means it’s one of the safest settlements on the entire map, as enemy armies will rarely attack the city due to the sheer distance that needs to be covered to get there.

12 Rovalt - Vlandia

  • Easy to defend

A common aspect of a fief players should take into account is how defensible it is. While Rovalt isn't tucked away in the corner of the map, it is located at the beginning of a peninsula in the northwestern corner of the Vlandian kingdom.

If you are a part of the Vlandians, this fief is guaranteed to be safe. If you are not with them, taking this fief will cut off the one other fief on the peninsula, which can easily be taken out once this location is secured.

11 Revyl – Sturgia

  • Best defensive fief in the game

Another town in a great location, Revyl is perhaps the most defensible settlement in the game. It only has one way to approach it, a winding mountainous path that is even tighter than the area around Ostican.

Revyl also has a castle nearby, which is an ideal target for early expansion as the surrounding terrain will protect both settlements from attack. Only the Vlandians or perhaps the Battanians will target this area, and players can use the narrow valleys nearby to tie up enemy forces or snipe any incoming reinforcements.

10 Galend – Vlandia

  • Deep in Vlandian territory

Over on the southwestern portion of the map, Galend is a relatively isolated town that is well insulated from most wars. While the city itself only starts with a prosperity of 1900 and is often plagued by bandit hideouts and looters , Galend is situated in a prime position to take over the rest of Vlandia’s land.

Nearby cities like Jaculan and Sargot are easy expansion opportunities, and the mountains on either side are ideal for funneling enemies into choke points. After the area has been fully secured, players can then invade the fertile and extensive lands of Pravend nearby.

9 Baltakhand - Khuzait

  • Surrounded by fields that take advantage of Khuzait cavalry

This settlement has one of the worst starting prosperities in the game, at only 1800, and due to being close to the border with Sturgia, Baltakhand can come under attack relatively easily.

However, its potential comes from the fact that the town has four villages bound to it, meaning its prosperity can skyrocket due to the number of goods being brought in. Sturgia also tends to be one of the weaker factions and the Khuzaits one of the stronger , meaning Baltakhand may not be as vulnerable as it first appears.

8 Danustica – Southern Empire

  • Central to the crossroads of the southeastern section of the map

Standing on the border between Aserai and the Southern Empire, Danustica guards access to the fertile imperial lands contained within. It is placed in a rather strategic position, forcing enemy armies to skirt right past it or take another, narrow land bridge to enter imperial territory.

Starting with a below-average prosperity of 2800, Danustica is nothing special economically. Despite this, it starts the game with multiple buildings fully constructed, which will allow the town to quickly prosper if defended adequately.

7 Marunath - Battania

  • Four Villages
  • Hub of the Battanian empire

One of the few settlements starting with a prosperity of 5000 or above, Marunath is the main economic hub of Battania. It has four bound villages, with a strong mix of food-producing hubs and settlements making other goods.

It’s in a central location, with Vlandia and the Western Empire both having easy access. That means it often comes under attack from one or both kingdoms, but if defended adequately , can remain a strong and wealthy town to add to the player’s holdings.

6 Vostrum – Southern Empire

  • Three villages
  • Surrounded by water and choke-point bridges

A well-placed and highly affluent settlement, Vostrum has a starting prosperity of 5100 and is defended by other Southern Empire settlements in the north, east, and west, and covered by a massive lake to the south.

Vostrum doesn’t usually see too much action because of this and can be considered quite a safe settlement to own. Its villages produce grain and fish, meaning food shouldn’t be a big issue. It isn’t exceptional by any means but is nonetheless a solid choice for any aspiring monarch .

5 Ortongard - Khuzait

  • Six trade-bound villages

Ortongard is the center of the Khuzait empire and is located deep within their territory with lots of buffer room before any enemy can get remotely close. Not only is this one of the safest fiefs in the game, but it has six trade-bound villages.

With that many villages constantly trading, goods and overall prosperity in this fief are set in stone. Players can focus on other governor focuses and upgrades to help the city focus on the happiness of the people, leading to the best overall fief players can get as long as they keep their enemies far away.

4 Epicrotea – Northern Empire

  • Seven trade-bound villages

Another high prosperity town, starting at 5100, Epicrotrea is a trade hub that resides in a central location, positioned in-between Battania, Sturgia, and the Western and Northern Empires.

Combine the strong location with the fact that it has seven bound villages, and Epicrotea proves to be a highly valuable and profitable settlement for the player to own. It will likely come under attack a great deal, due to its location, but the surrounding castles make good targets for quick and easy expansion.

3 Sanala – Aserai

  • Five trade-bound villages

While not top-tier in terms of starting prosperity, Sanala has a lot of potential to become the best town in the game. Out of four bound villages, three produce food, meaning the city is never lacking sustenance and can quickly grow, pushing prosperity higher and higher.

It’s also located in a central trading position along the Aserai desert but is far enough away from the borders to avoid frequent sieges and raids. If left to develop, Sanala’s economic power can quickly spiral out of control, making it a strong choice for a kingdom’s capital.

2 Ortysia – Western Empire

  • Choke point to the Aserai to the south.

With the highest starting prosperity of all settlements in the game at 5600, Ortysia is one of the busiest trading towns in all of Calradia. It gets a lot of caravan traffic from the Aserai and marks the border between the Western Empire and Vlandia, making it a key stop for traders passing through .

Players can earn a lot of decent income from this town, and it allows for some control over the narrow path that connects Aserai to the rest of Calradia, making Ortysia less vulnerable than other towns as well. Astute players can all but sever trade between nations by operating out of this strategically placed settlement.

1 Odokh - Khuzait

  • Difficult to reach by invaders

While this fief may not seem like it's in the middle of nowhere, the only way to reach it is by marching deeper into Khuzait land and going around the river, or further south through Aserai territory. Nearby fiefs and castles act as a buffer before this fief would ever be attacked.

The nearby plains surrounding this fief make it easy to spot an approaching army and ride out to meet them long before a siege begins. While there are only two trade-bound villages to this fief, it is a great place to start a caravan due to its more remote location to maximize personal profits.

This also include any horses they actually ride themselves, so footmen and archers can each allow you to carry 2, where cavalry only 1, as they are riding a horse themselves already.

    Travel Speed is influenced by 3 factors - Party Size, Pathfinding, and the number of horses you have in your inventory. Party size is pretty obvious - the bigger your army, the slower you go. However, cavalry slows you much less than infantry, which is why parties of 70 Khergits can easily outrun 60 Nords. Pathfinding is a skill influenced by INT.
