Editor’s Note: This story has been updated with tour dates.

Thrash innovators Slayer have been going strong since 1981, and their shows have always reliably been just about the most fun place to get punched in the head. It’s hard to picture the band hanging it up, especially after they survived the 2013 death of founding guitarist Jeff Hanneman . But the band now claims that they’re just about done. In a new video, the band has announced “one, final world tour,” with “final North American dates coming soon.” Here’s the video, which is full of archival images:

Slayer announced that they will be joined on the outing by Anthrax, Testament, Lamb of God and Behemoth on the tour, which kicks off on May 10 in San Diego. A day after announcing the final lap, the group released the official list of dates.

After making some of the most brutal, breathtakingly aggressive, all-hell’s-a-breaking-loose music ever created, being one of the four bands that defined an entire musical genre and being the band that other heavy acts are measured against and aspire to…after nearly 37 years, releasing 12 studio albums, multiple live recordings, compilations, live video and two box sets, playing nearly 3000 concerts in all corners of the world, receiving countless awards including five Grammy nominations and two Grammy awards, Gold records and other accolades…having its own exhibit in the Smithsonian Institute, gracing hundreds of magazine covers, experiencing the devastating loss of a founding brother, and even appearing on “The Tonight Show,” the age of Slayer, one of the greatest thrash/ metal/punk bands of this or any age, is coming to an end. Slayer will do one last concert tour around the globe to thank their fans for all the support over the years. N. Slayer's Last Show of Final Campaign: See Setlist, Videos, Backstage Photos

slayer HUBBARD 077a7017_copy.jpg

Last night, November 30th, Slayer played the final show of their " Final Campaign " — the concluding leg of their farewell world tour — at the Forum in Los Angeles, the second of two consecutive concerts there. The thrash titans' whirlwind victory lap kicked off on May 10th, 2018, and took them through over 30 countries and 40 American states across more than 140 gigs, "with the band's intention to play as many places as possible to make it easy for the fans to see one last Slayer show and say goodbye," the group explained in a joint statement.

Considering the extended build-up, last night's show was a wild, cathartic, bittersweet event. As they have at all the Final Campaign shows, Philip H. Anselmo & the Illegals (playing only Pantera classics), Ministry and Primus opened the festivities, but of course, the night belonged to Slayer. Tom Araya, Kerry King, Gary Holt and Paul Bostaph tore through an epic 20-song set, with famous friends including Metallica's Kirk Hammett, actors Jason Momoa and Joe Manganiello, pop star Post Malone, Anthrax's Scott Ian and Charlie Benante, King Diamond and more taking in the performance and then partying with the band members backstage.

"Thank you. Thank you very much," Araya said to the reverent crowd at the end of the show. "I want to thank you for sharing your time with us. Time is precious. So I thank you for sharing that time with us. Thank you. I'm gonna miss you guys. But the most important thing I want to thank you for being a part of my life. Thank you. Good night. You guys be safe."

KERRY KING: SLAYER Will 'Never Tour Again'

In a new interview with Jonathan Clarke , host of "Out Of The Box" on Q104.3 , New York's classic rock station, Kerry King was asked about how SLAYER 's upcoming reunion shows came about, five years since the completion of what was being billed as the band's farewell tour. He responded (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "I'll put it in the perspective everybody can understand. We've been turning down offers since beginning of 2020, pandemic and all. And then it started getting near the five-year anniversary of us stopping playing, so I'm, like, 'You know what? This is a three-show package. I think it would be fun to do.' It's kind of a five-year anniversary of our last tour. We're never gonna tour again — it ain't gonna happen. We're never gonna record again; that's not gonna happen either. But to do commemorative shows, I think that's kind of fun. I don't have to be married to it for a long time. Kids don't have to worry about it coming around on tour because we said we wouldn't. There's not a whole lot of weird diabolical shit going on here. I think people have just gotta say, 'Hey, it's anniversary celebration shows.' That's gonna be the end of it."

Kerry previously discussed the SLAYER comeback last month in an interview with Andrew Daly of ClassicRockHistory.com . Asked for about his outlook on the reunion shows, he said: "It's not really much different at all. It's the same heads, same cabs, same pedals, same guitars. You know, there will be a lot of fire when SLAYER plays, and I think, yeah, those shows will just be fun. It'll be fun to play with Gary Holt [ SLAYER guitarist] for a few gigs; I haven't seen him in almost five years, so that will be cool. And it'll be cool to get together with Tom Araya [ SLAYER bassist/vocalist] and spit some hate out at people, but don't get used to this being a yearly event."

Earlier last month, King was asked by SiriusXM 's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" if he thinks SLAYER 's upcoming dates will have a positive or negative impact on the promotional efforts for his debut solo album, "From Hell I Rise" , which arrived on May 17 via Reigning Phoenix Music . He responded: "I see it both ways. We've [ SLAYER ] been turning down [reunion] offers for the last four years. Unfortunately, when the right offer came around, this one, it was right as my project was releasing. So there's certainly people, like my management and booking agents, who say, 'Oh, that's great. It's gonna boost your solo thing.' And I'm, like, 'Well, I don't know the business side of it, but it is what it is.' And every time I talk about it to journalists and magazines and stuff, I say, 'Listen, SLAYER is not gonna make another record. SLAYER is never gonna tour again.' May SLAYER do a one-off here or there? Maybe. I told my [solo] band when [the SLAYER reunion shows] came up, I'm, like, 'Listen, this is a blip on the radar to me. This isn't a solo project that's gonna recycle musicians every record cycle. You guys are with me till you don't wanna be.'"

Asked if he envisions SLAYER as the type of thing where the band will do one or two shows a year when a great opportunity comes up, Kerry said: "I'm not even talking yearly. I'm, like, every two years, every three years, every five years. I don't know. 'Cause I'm gonna be super busy with [my solo band] once 2025 rolls around."

On the topic of whether he has spoken to Araya since SLAYER 's reunion shows were announced, Kerry said: "I'll tell you the truth, 'cause you know that's how I roll. No, we haven't. But you know what's weird about that? It's not weird. [ Laughs ]"

He continued: "We'll go probably rehearse off and on for a couple weeks [before the first show], 'cause even though me and [ SLAYER drummer] Paul [ Bostaph , who is also in Kerry 's solo band] will be sharp from playing, playing with different people, you've gotta get sharp together."

Elaborating on his belief that SLAYER 's comeback shows will not lead into a full-fledged reunion for the legendary thrash metal act, Kerry said: "The way I look at it, and when I tell you this, it puts it into perspective for a lot of people, I see it as three five-year anniversary shows of our last tour."

Five years after SLAYER played the last concert of what was being billed as the band's farewell tour and just weeks after the SLAYER guitarist unveiled the details of his solo project, Kerry and his longtime bandmates announced that they will play at the Aftershock , Riot Fest and Louder Than Life festivals in September and October.

King also talked about the SLAYER reunion while speaking to Revolver magazine about "From Hell I Rise" . Asked if he had known about these shows well before they were officially announced, King said: "If you ask promoters, they're going to have another answer. If you ask booking agents, they'll probably have a third answer. But to me, it kind of came out of nowhere. Have we been getting offers the past few years? Yeah, we turn down offers every year, probably every month of every year. These three festivals are right around the five-year anniversary of our last tour, which I thought was kind of cool. So, I thought this might be the right time to test the water. It will be great to play for the fans again."

Regarding whether the upcoming SLAYER shows will steal some of the thunder away from the touring his solo band will do in support of "From Hell I Rise" , Kerry said: "Well, time will tell, and my answer would be, 'hopefully not'. The funny thing is, it never occurred to me until the day the SLAYER announcement came, but [ Phil ] Demmel [guitarist in Kerry 's solo band] said, 'Dude, is this real?' And I'm, like, 'It's just a few weekends and that's it.' Of course, Paul knew. But I didn't tell Phil , I didn't tell Kyle [ Sanders , KERRY KING bassist] and didn't tell Mark [ Osegueda , KERRY KING singer] — and I said to the guys, 'There's no master plan here.' I didn't want anybody to start getting cold feet. I said, 'This is a little moment in time, and yeah, KERRY KING is going to be touring, you know, hopefully later in the year, as well. But SLAYER is an entity and I'm just a person.' But hopefully, we drive on with the solo project."

King also spoke about the SLAYER reunion in an interview with U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine. Admitting that the announcement of SLAYER 's comeback "was not my favorite timing", Kerry said that the SLAYER reunion "is not going to translate into recording and it's not going to translate into touring. For me, it's three shows marking five years since our final shows, a fun, 'Hey, remember us from before the pandemic?' celebration."

Kerry also explained in more detail why he still has not spoken to Tom since the news of SLAYER 's reunion was announced. "It's not like I'm angry with him or anything," King clarified. "We're very different people, and we evolved into business partners at the end of the day. He has very different interests from me, and very different outlooks. Does that make me hate him? No. But I don't need to talk to him every day… We just don't have much in common. When it comes time to rehearse, I'll have no problem showing up. We're professionals, and that's what we do."

When Kerry 's solo project was first announced, King told Rolling Stone that he was almost positive he and Tom would never resurrect the band. "I can pretty much a hundred percent say no because I have a new outlet, and it's not SLAYER , but it sounds like SLAYER ," King said of a potential SLAYER reunion.

The lineup for SLAYER 's comeback will be the same as the one which last toured in 2019: Araya and King , along with guitarist Gary Holt (also of EXODUS ) and longtime drummer Paul Bostaph .

Days after SLAYER 's reunion was announced, Tom Araya 's wife wrote on social media that she "harassed him for over a year" before he "agreed finally" to play more shows with the band. "We shared that news with SLAYER 's awesome managers and they did the rest!" she explained. "So yes without Tom it wouldn't have happened.. without me BUGGING HIM it wouldn't have happened."

Both Gary and his wife Lisa Holt were among the hundreds of people who "liked" Sandra 's Instagram post, with Lisa sharing three heart emojis in response to Sandra 's message.

In a statement confirming SLAYER 's return, Tom said: "Nothing compares to the 90 minutes when we're on stage playing live, sharing that intense energy with our fans, and to be honest, we have missed that." King added: "Have I missed playing live? Absolutely. SLAYER means a lot to our fans; they mean a lot to us. It will be five years since we have seen them."

The same day that SLAYER 's comeback was announced, Holt 's wife Lisa Holt took to her social media to write: "Yes, it's true..and an exciting adventure for the band and fans !

"To all the people saying 'they are liars' 'they must have ran out of money' 'its not SLAYER without so and so' ..I have an idea for you all...DON'T GO.. and for all the people who did go to the final tour dates and enjoyed it...awesome!!

"This isn't a 'TOUR' it's some dates..and GREAT NEWS!!!" she added. "And everyone that thinks they know all the inside info..you can't possibly know. so just enjoy the fact that this amazing band will play some amazing shows this year...go or don't..nobody cares!!!!!"

Three weeks before SLAYER 's reunion was announced, Kerry told Rolling Stone that he didn't foresee SLAYER coming back together for the foreseeable future.

"Will SLAYER tour again? I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen. Could SLAYER play a show again? I'm sure there's a scenario," King said, adding that he hadn't spoken to Araya since that final show. "Am I looking for it? No, I'm just getting ready to start my [solo] career. So if that happens, it happens. But I'm going to be doing this for the next 10 years at least."

SLAYER played the final show of its farewell tour in November 2019 at the Forum in Los Angeles. One day later, Kerry 's wife Ayesha said that there is "not a chance in hell" that the thrash metal icons will reunite for more live appearances.

SLAYER 's final world tour began on May 10, 2018 with the band's intention to play as many places as possible, to make it easy for the fans to see one last SLAYER show and say goodbye. By the time the 18-month trek wrapped at the Forum, the band had completed seven tour legs plus a series of one-off major summer festivals, performing more than 140 shows in 30 countries and 40 U.S. states.

All material for "From Hell I Rise" was written by King , who was accompanied during the recording sessions by Bostaph , Demmel , Sanders and Osegueda . Helming the sessions at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles last year was producer Josh Wilbur , who has previously worked with KORN , LAMB OF GOD , AVENGED SEVENFOLD and BAD RELIGION , among others.

Here’s the setlist from Slayer’s last-ever show - watch them take their final bow

Slayer brought the curtain down on their legendary career at The Forum in Los Angeles last night - watch them play live together for the very last time

Slayer

Slayer took their final bow last night at The Forum in Los Angeles.

The thrash legends announced their intentions to tour one last time back in January 2018, and on Saturday night, they brought the curtain down with a blistering set packed full of fan favourites.

Opening proceedings with South Of Heaven , Slayer then launched into a further 19 tracks including Seasons In The Abyss , Jesus Saves , Chemical Warfare , Hell Awaits , Raining Blood and more, closing out their 37 year career with Reign In Blood classic Angel Of Death .

Fan-filmed footage of the end of the set can be watched below which shows Slayer saying an emotional farewell after inviting their crew onstage.

Vocalist and bassist Tom Araya tells the crowd: “I want to thank you for sharing your time with us. Time is precious, so I thank you for sharing that time with us.

“I’m going to miss you guys, but the most important thing, I want to thank you for being a part of my life. Thank you. Goodnight. You guys be safe."

Is this the last we’ll see of Slayer, or could they continue to record at some point in the future? According to their manager Rick Sales, although their live career is over that doesn’t “mean the end of the band.”

Farewell, Slayer: Metal’s Most Unflinching Band

  • By Kory Grow

Everybody who’s seen Slayer live has a tale to tell. Some are like war stories: There’s the time fans ripped the seats out of New York City’s Felt Forum, lit them on fire and threw them at the stage. And the Denver concert where the audience got so manic that the promoter made the band stop everything for about 10 minutes so singer-bassist Tom Araya could tell the crowd to take a step back before they’d play again. And, of course, there’s the infamous Hollywood Palladium gig where some 200 Slayer fans weren’t allowed in, leading to a vicious riot that got them banned from the venue for 25 years.

You don’t even need to be watching the band to get the full Slayer experience, as Black Dahlia Murder frontman Trevor Strnad once told me: “When you go see Slayer, you go to the bathroom and you’re taking a piss and the guy next to you looks right at you and screams, ‘Slayer!’ in your face. And then 13 other people start screaming ‘Slayer!’ in the men’s bathroom. And that’s what it’s all about, dude.”

There are certainly heavier bands and ones with nastier lyrics, but there’s something unique about Slayer that has always inspired an animalistic frenzy in their fans. Whether it’s the mix of eerie and crushing guitar riffs, the athletic drumming or Araya’s frenzied vocals, Slayer provide a live experience like no other group. Their shows are a rite of passage for headbangers, an unholy communion with metal’s loud-and-proud, self-proclaimed antichrists. And, even on nights when it’s not raining fiery seat cushions, the gigs still feel   dangerous – there you are with a thousand or so fellow headbangers chanting “ evil ” over and over again during “Evil Has No Boundaries,” throwing the horns to lines like “Do you want to die?!” and “Praise, hail Satan!” and generally losing your shit during the “hits” like “Raining Blood,” “Angel of Death” and “South of Heaven.” It’s that sense of community that makes Slayer shows so exciting: When you’re in a group of Slayer fans, you feel like you’re in on something the rest of the world isn’t.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Now Slayer are embarking on their final world tour , a farewell to the cult of fans they built during nearly four decades of aggression. It’s a surprising move for metal’s most unflinching band – after all, they’ve persevered through controversy , flouted censors and even kept going after one of their founding members died – but they are human after all, so the end was inevitable. To paraphrase Neil Young, it’s better to self-immolate in an infernal blaze than it is to fade away.

It’s always been an uphill battle for the band, but they’ve managed to make a surprising impact on the mainstream while cultivating their devoted horde. Since forming in Los Angeles in 1981, they’ve earned four gold records and won two Grammys with little support from MTV and no radio airplay. They notched three albums on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time list , including the number six slot for their touchstone 1986 LP, Reign in Blood . Tori Amos has covered Slayer, Public Enemy and Lil Jon have sampled them, the Beastie Boys featured them as guests, Showtime’s Californication referenced them weekly , their songs have featured in everything from horror movies to hit HBO series and the Kardashian clan has feuded with them.

That’s because Slayer have always strived to be the most extreme at everything – they play the fastest guitar parts, they summon the darkest melodies, they sing the scariest lyrics. Reign in Blood is so fast and furious that when it came out on cassette, Side One contained the entire album. Side Two did too.

The amount of thought that the band put into simply sounding evil is staggering. Just take a moment to marvel at their riff library – the triumphal majesty of “Mandatory Suicide,” the sheer otherworldliness of “South of Heaven,” the angel-dust psychedelia of “Seasons in the Abyss,” the pulverizing wallop of “Disciple,” the mix of crushing and piercing notes in what could be their very own “Iron Man,” “Raining Blood” – it goes on and on.

Now consider their lyrics. Nearly all of their thrash-metal peers, including the other members of the genre’s so-called Big Four – Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax – have written a song about going to shows or moshing or, later in their careers, they’ve sung (gasp!) ballads. Not Slayer. Never has a band devoted themselves so vigilantly to the topics of hell, Satan, black magic, war, serial killers or necrophilia. More impressive, they’re themes Araya could sell convincingly at gigs without sounding ( too ) corny.

Slayer's Kerry King: My 10 Favorite Metal Albums

Whether in concert or on record, Slayer have always been a band you love, hate or learn to live with. They would actively bait controversy, whether with the song “Angel of Death,” about Nazi doctor Josef Mengele (“There’s nothing I put in the lyrics that says necessarily [Mengele] was a bad man, because … I shouldn’t have to tell you that,” guitarist Jeff Hanneman once said ) or by changing the final lyric of Minor Threat’s “Guilty of Being White” in a 1996 cover version to “guilty of being right ,” which upset people despite the fact that Araya is Chilean. Even their latest album, Repentless , features a standout called “Pride in Prejudice.” And a year after the parents of a teen accused Ozzy Osbourne of hiding backwards messages on his records, allegedly inspiring their son to kill himself ( Ozzy was acquitted ), Slayer started their album Hell Awaits with the words “join us” whispered like a chant in reverse. Where Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie write songs that shock with elements of irony and cabaret, Slayer always stared directly into the void.

Moreover, their album art was almost always over the top. From Reign in Blood through 1990’s Seasons in the Abyss , their records featured Bosch-like hellscapes imagined by artist Larry Carroll; their “Seasons in the Abyss” single came in a “blood pack” with floating skulls; their Divine Intervention album featured the arms of a fan who’d carved “Slayer” into his forearm on the CD (the “Serenity in Murder” single similarly showed a man with the band’s name bleeding down his back ); and  God Hates Us All featured a bloody Bible with nails in it .

At their shows, they always presented their signature brand of blasphemies   somewhat nonchalantly. It was never in your face. You just had to come to terms that you were now in hell. Araya peers out at the audience, bellowing his vocals, the rest of the band headbangs, the lights change between stark red, blue or green, offering glimpses of backdrops of inverted crosses and pentagrams. It’s there, in the live setting, where they always proved their mettle.

'The Acolyte': This 'Star Wars' Prequel Series Isn't A Force To Be Reckoned With

‘i’ll admit i blew it’: michael richards talks kramer, vietnam, and that racist outburst, bad boy for life: sean combs’ history of violence, trump allies sue to allow election officials to refuse to certify results.

While their studio albums changed the way heavy metal was recorded (producer Rick Rubin took the reverb off the guitars on Reign in Blood and boosted the drums), Slayer’s riffs feel more electrifying live, and Araya sounds possessed. Just put on the band’s two official concert recordings – 1984’s Live Undead and 1991’s Decade of Aggression – to witness the swagger they conjure onstage. When they play “The Antichrist” on Live Undead , the notes seem to fall off their strings effortlessly like loose meat as the audience screams over the melee, and on Decade’s  “Hell Awaits,” drummer Dave Lombardo’s rhythms swing with a looseness not heard on the original recording. Even “Angel of Death,” a warhorse for the band at the time, has an unhinged quality to it. The sound is electrifying, and it’s a great reminder of why Slayer have become one of metal’s greatest bands. And if you doubt it, they’ve got you covered with a disclaimer in the liner notes of Decade : “Unlike most other live recordings, this is Slayer completely ‘LIVE.’ No overdubbing exists on this recording.” This is the true sound of damnation.

When Slayer say their final goodbyes, it will be bittersweet. While they are as intense as ever (when I saw them in the old Felt Forum space inside Madison Square Garden last year, they sounded even more bloodthirsty than usual), they’ve undergone many changes in recent years. Guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who wrote many of the group’s most beloved songs, quit touring with the group in 2011 after contracting the flesh-eating disease necrotizing fasciitis and died of alcohol-related liver cirrhosis in 2013. Exodus guitarist Gary Holt stepped in for him when he was sick and later joined full-time. Meanwhile, founding drummer Dave Lombardo, who’d been in and out of the band over the years, exited the group once and for all following a financial dispute in 2013; Paul Bostaph, who replaced Lombardo in 1992, once again rejoined the band. Through it all, Araya and King’s determination kept things going.

Now they’ve reached an end. The group hasn’t made any statements or done any interviews explaining why it’s decided this would be the final world tour – or whether that means Slayer are breaking up afterwards or continuing to record or play one-off concerts. A couple of years ago, Araya told an interviewer it was “time to collect [his] pension,” and, over the years, he’s complained that he was bummed he could no longer headbang the way he used to. King, meanwhile, has remained dedicated to Slayer but has expressed exasperation about putting extracurricular activities on hold because he didn’t “know if [he’s] gonna be working in two years … hopefully in Slayer.” Then there was the public inter-band dustup between the two of them last year when Araya posted a photo of Trump giving the metal horns on the band’s Instagram without consulting his bandmates; King supported Clinton . Have they really grown so far apart that not even Satan can unite them?

They likely won’t be offering any answers from the stage. It’s just not their style. What they’ll do instead is bash their way through 37 years’ worth of unapologetic, skull-rattling anthems to darkness. They’ll welcome you to claim your plot in hell, which is exactly what the fans want. After all, for metalheads, the last tour will be a final sweaty summit, a final stab at creating a moment that will add to Slayer’s mystery and legacy. It’ll be one last chance to look at whoever you’re standing next to in the bathroom and scream, “Slayer!”

Kerry King Talks New Band, Organized Religion, Rage, and Slayer Reunion Gigs

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The post Kerry King Talks New Band, Organized Religion, Rage, and Slayer Reunion Gigs appeared first on Consequence .

Shortly after Slayer ’s farewell tour wrapped up in November 2019, guitarist Kerry King was determined to keep thrashing with a new project. But a worldwide pandemic forced him to delay those plans, until he finally unveiled his eponymous outfit earlier this year.

Along with an all-star band consisting of singer Mark Osegueda (Death Angel), guitarist Phil Demmel (Machine Head), bassist Kyle Sanders (Hellyeah), and drummer Paul Bostaph (Slayer), King unleashed the single “Idle Hands” in February while announcing the full-length album From Hell I Rise , which arrived on May 17th.

Following a live debut at a club show in Chicago, and appearances at the Welcome to Rockville and Sonic Temple festivals, King’s band recently kicked off a UK/European run. They’ll return to the States to support Lamb of God and Mastodon on a summer tour  ( tickets available here ).

On top of all that, it was announced that Slayer would reunite for a trio of US festival gigs this fall: Riot Fest, Louder Than Life, and Aftershock.

Heavy Consequence caught up with King to discuss his new project, his stance on organized religion, what keeps him raging, and his expectations on taking the stage with Slayer again.

Read our interview with Kerry King below, and pick up the album From Hell I Rise in various formats here .

As I understand it, you wanted to debut this project not too long after the Slayer farewell tour ended in late 2019, but sat on it due to the pandemic. Was it frustrating waiting a few years to finally get it off the ground?

Of course it was frustrating, but the hardest part came once we actually finally recorded and then basically sat on it for another year. I [initially] didn’t waste a lot of time. I think after Slayer’s last show, I probably chilled for like three months, but got right back on it. That was right before the pandemic. So I just anticipated business as usual. I thought by the end of [2020], I would have had music out, and I thought I’d be touring again, but obviously that didn’t happen.

There were a lot of rumors going around as to who would be in your solo band, but you ended up with an impressive lineup that includes Mark Osegueda, Paul Bostaph, Phil Demmel, and Kyle Sanders. What was it like keeping it under wraps for so long, and what led you to these particular guys?

It was super difficult. I mean I probably told a handful of friends who I trust to keep things quiet, but the hardest thing I think would have been for Mark, Phil, and Kyle because they couldn’t talk about it. … They had to be chomping at the bit to tell their friends. … So it was a great day when our [first single “Idle Hands”] dropped and the band announcement got dropped.

Basically, all these guys to me are longtime friends. I’ve probably known Kyle the shortest. We became friends in the Mayhem Tour of 2015. But Demmel I’ve known for decades. Osegueda I’ve known for decades. It’s just being able to pick out guys that you get along with, and that are into the music you’re into, as well.

You’ve been a part of two legendary guitar duos in Slayer, with the late Jeff Hanneman, as well as with Gary Holt, so I imagine a lot went into the decision of picking Phil Demmel for the solo band.

Well, I’ve been a Machine Head fan since the first record. I know the heaviness and the desire to play heavy is there just by his track record. Phil Demmel filled in four shows for Gary Holt when Gary’s dad was sick at the end of ’18. And what he did for my band was something I couldn’t do for my favorite band on the planet. It was just amazing how he got all the songs, came out, watched the cadence of the live show for a few shows before he actually jumped in. And then when he came into play, it was like business as usual.

So, lucky for him, he doesn’t have his name attached to Slayer that much because I wouldn’t have picked him. I already had Paul from Slayer and I didn’t want to keep taking Slayer guys. That’s why Gary Holt didn’t go forward with me because I figured the more people I have from Slayer would just give people more ammunition to say, “It’s just baby Slayer. It’s just Slayer without Tom.” And I certainly didn’t want that. There’s obviously nothing against Gary Holt. Gary Holt was the perfect guy to take Jeff’s place [in Slayer]. But that’s why I didn’t pick him for this [project].

And you’ve got Mark Osegueda on lead vocals. What led you ultimately go with him as the singer?

Well, I’ve known him for decades. We probably didn’t become close till like the last time [Death Angel] opened for [Slayer], which would have been ’15, ’16, ’17, something like that. And we’ve been friends. He’s got great pipes. The range that he has, the fan of music that he is, the potential that we haven’t even tapped into yet, those are all great things moving forward. So, we’ve got one record under the belt and the second one being talked about. So, there’s great things to come.

You introduced the album From Hell I Rise with the first single “Idle Hands.” What made you decide on that song being the first taste of music from this project?

All the titles, like From Hell I Rise for the album, people are going to dissect it a million ways. Maybe somebody thinks, “His hell was Slayer” or “His hell was being not be able to play for the last four years.” But that being said, “Idle Hands” sums up what I’ve been doing. I haven’t been able to play. I haven’t been able to record. I haven’t been able to go on tour, so idle hands are the devil’s work. … So not only is it the perfect song to throw out at people as the first tidbit of what I’ve [been up to] since, but lyrically, I think it hits home, too.

Both in Slayer and in this project, you’ve never been afraid to criticize organized religion in your lyrics. What do you see in the real world that leads you to write songs on that topic?

Well, I think it’s a farce. When I was in grade school, I couldn’t tell you what grade, but during the summer one year, my parents said, “Hey, you want to go to Sunday school?” Because, I did all kinds of extracurricular stuff at school. So I’m like, “Yeah, I’ll check it out.” I didn’t know what church was. And this isn’t what gave me my hatred for it, but it’s just a fun story. So I went to Sunday school, like a week into it, I went to my parents. I’m like, “I don’t think I want to go to this anymore.” Even that little kid knew it was a bunch of dog shit.

It’s like politics these days. What’s said in the press is gone within 48 hours. All the things Donald Trump did as president, I remember seeing on the news how many lies he’d made in four years, and like 36 hours later, it’s like it never happened. That’s basically how religion is. You hear about all these priests around the world getting convicted for sexual assault or inappropriate conduct with minors, and a day later it’s gone. But I remember that shit, and it’s been fueling my lyrics for the last probably 40 years. So, thank you religion for keeping me occupied.

And 40 years into doing this, you still have a lot of rage in your lyrics. In fact, there’s even a song called “Rage” on the album. After achieving great success in one of metal’s most legendary bands, where does that rage still come from?

Honestly, just everyday life. You don’t have to look far to be pissed off about something. I mean, people are an idiotic species and I’m sure the Earth can’t wait to get rid of us, but it’s anything just from the simplest thing like being polite. It’s not hard to be polite. If I can be polite, you can fuckin’ be polite, and so many people just aren’t. There’s rage number one. That’s the beginning of whatever song it may be, and it just goes on exponentially from there.

This summer, your band will open for Lamb of God and Mastodon, two acts that have expressed gratitude to Slayer for taking them out on the road in the past. Does being the support act take you back to the grind of the early days of Slayer, as you introduce this new project to fans?

It’s hard to say, but that’s potentially a thing. I haven’t started a new band in 40 years, so it’s definitely a thing. I’m not used to not headlining. I’ve been headlining as long as I can remember. But with Lamb of God and Mastodon, it’s really a full circle kind of thing because we did take both those guys out many times. And for them to have the niceness, so to speak, to take me out and give me an opportunity, I’m stoked about that.

And, of course, Slayer are reuniting for a few festival gigs this fall. What do you think that feeling will be like taking the stage together for the first time in five years?

Playing with this [new band] for the first time [was] the real test, ’cause that [was] a different environment. … Slayer is going to be like putting on old shoes. That’s nothing.
