What’s the Best Month to Cruise? Pros & Cons of Sailing Each Month of the Year

Let’s get one thing straight right at the start. There is no bad time to cruise . Whether you want to have a summer vacation or a winter getaway, the weather somewhere in the Caribbean is always warm and welcoming.

mexico cruise weather in february

That said, with our experiences having sailed seemingly every month on the calendar, we have found there are definite advantages and disadvantages to sailing each month of the year. For example, cruises in August offer the ability to sail when the kids are out of school (meaning entire families can travel together). On the other hand, August is also notorious for hurricanes disrupting travel to Caribbean ports.

As you’ll see below, there are trade-offs with each time of year to sail. No month is perfect. However, many of the potential downsides are manageable in our opinion — and shouldn’t deter you from taking a cruise when it fits your schedule and budget.

Taking a Cruise in January

Pros : We like sailing in January as one of the biggest advantages of cruising this time of year is price. During this time of year school is in session and many people are back at work after a holiday break. That means it’s difficult for many to cruise. Cruise lines typically have discounted rates to fill up the ship in January; the same cruise departing at the height of the busy summer can cost hundreds of dollars more than in January.

As well, when winter has gripped most of North America, the Caribbean still offers a warm getaway with lots of sunshine. It’s a welcome change from the snow and cold see in most areas.

Cons : If you are a family, it might be tough for you to take a January cruise. It will usually mean the kids have to skip a few days of school to take the trip. In addition, if you have to fly in for your cruise, there are chances of winter weather causing delays to your schedule. You’ll want to make sure you plan your flight to arrive the day before your cruise, just in case.

As well, this time of year trips from the West Coast will still be cool and Alaskan cruises don’t start sailing until April/May.

Taking a Cruise in February

mexico cruise weather in february

Pros : February offers the same advantages to sailing as you see in January. Fares are normally discounted, with the ability to save hundreds on a cruise by sailing in February versus the height of the summer season. It’s also cold in most of the United States and Canada, making a warm getaway awfully enticing.

Cons : Like January, you might find it difficult to take time off after the holidays to enjoy a cruise. Doing so means spending vacation days early in the year and/or having the kids miss school. There are also still strong snowstorms in many parts of North America during February, meaning it’s possible that getting to the port can be an adventure if you have to fly in for your cruise from a northern city.

As well, even if sailing to the Caribbean, the pools and water on a ship may still be too cool to enjoy fully. Don’t plan on spending much time in the water in our experience.

Taking a Cruise in March

Pros : With warmer weather and Spring Break, a cruise is on many people’s minds come March. In fact, if you are a Spring Breaker, this is a great time to sail as a cruise offers an affordable getaway to the beach without having to worry about flights or hotel. Just hop on the ship and start your vacation.

As well, if you’re headed to the Caribbean, March can be warm — but not too warm compared to the heat of the summer months.

Cons : If you aren’t a Spring Break fan, then this might not be the best month to sail. Cruises — especially shorter trips (3-5 days) — will have a younger crowd and more of a party atmosphere. You’ll also see a spike in prices starting in mid-March as cruise lines raise prices for trips that coincide with Spring Break.

Taking a Cruise in April

mexico cruise weather in february

Pros : April represents one of your last chances to get a deal on a cruise before the busy summer sailing season. Discounts and deals are still available up until about mid-May, giving you the chance to save a bundle on a trip compared to sailing just a month or two later. As well, the threat of snow is diminished in northern parts of the United States and hurricane season isn’t here yet for port cities. It’s hard to find better weather than what you get in April.

Cons : After Spring Break, it’s back to school and work for most people. That means many have a tough time taking a trip at this time a year. That’s unfortunate because April is the “Goldilocks” of cruise months for the Caribbean — it features affordable prices, good weather, and is before hurricane season gets cranked up, which always adds a wildcard to travel in the Caribbean.

Taking a Cruise in May

Pros : Heading into May, cruisers hitting the Caribbean can start to experience some warmer weather both at home and on their cruise. While the water and beach are typically warm enough for swimming and laying out even during the coldest winter months, it is a few degrees warmer in May, which can make it more inviting to hit the beach. For example, Cozumel’s average high in January is 83, compared to 91 degrees in May. If you’re the type who loves warm water, May is when things start to heat up.

Cons : If you wait until too late in the month, you’ll start to see higher prices for your cruise. The end of May marks the start of the summer cruising season, and fares start to jump up. One place where you can save? Cruises to Alaska typically start their season in May, and it’s the cheapest month to sail to that region . We’ve sailed Alaska this time of year and highly recommend it.

Taking a Cruise in June

Pros : If you want a summer getaway with warm weather and water, June is a great choice. Hurricane season starts June 1st, but it’s still rare that you’ll have a chance of a hurricane this early. Meanwhile, the Caribbean is starting to heat up so you can have a true beach summer vacation without worrying about it being too chilly either on the ship or in port. Also, with the kids out of school, you can take them on your trip without worrying about absences.

Cons : With schools out of session and the popular summer vacation season, fares spike for June and through the rest of summer. You’ll usually be paying more for the same cruise compared to taking it earlier in the year. As well, if you aren’t the type that likes to cruise with families on the ship, then keep in mind that summer months typically see an influx of kids.

Taking a Cruise in July

Cruise in July

Pros : Like June, you’ll find warm and sunny days filling July. And with the kids out of classes, you’ll have the opportunity to sail without missing school, making it an ideal time to cruise if you are traveling with kids. While it is warm in the Caribbean, regular afternoon “pop-up” showers can help cool things off during the heat of the afternoon. This also represents the height of the Alaskan cruise season, offering the most options (albeit at higher prices) of the year.

Cons : The biggest negative with sailing in July is hot weather. On sunny days, it can get downright hot in many Caribbean ports. If you aren’t used to the heat and humidity, it can be draining. As well, you should start to look out for hurricanes and tropical storms during July — especially if traveling later in the month. While cruise ships will avoid any storms, they can be unpredictable and cause changes to your itinerary.

Also, just keep in mind that you should expect the highest cruise fares of the year during this time.

Taking a Cruise in August

Pros : Consider August the last hurrah if you want to be able to cruise with the kids out of school. While the weather is hot, being able to travel as a family without missing school days is the biggest draw of sailing in this month. If the kids don’t start back until September, then you can sometimes find deals late in the month that can save you considerably on your cruise fare.

Cons : Similar to July, you can run into weather issues in August. Specifically, the heat and humidity is at its worst in the Caribbean during August. While afternoon showers can cool things off, they are not a guarantee. You also have to start worrying seriously about hurricanes. Late August is reaching the peak of hurricane season. While the chances are low that your specific cruise will be hit by a storm (cruise lines steer clears of storms as much as possible), it could disrupt your trip if a hurricane hits a port of call.

Taking a Cruise in September

Pros : With the busy summer cruise season past, students back to school, and summer vacations in the rear view mirror, September offers a “shoulder” season of sorts. While the Caribbean is still warm — perfect for those that want to hit the beach and the water — cruise fares are heavily discounted versus the expensive summer months. In other words, you get the warm weather of the summer with the lower prices of the fall. As well, your cruise is likely to have fewer kids onboard. It’s also the last chance to sail Alaska for the season, when crowds are fewer and fares are generally cheaper.

Cons : September actually marks the peak of hurricane season. Historically, the first week of the month is the busiest for storms and then activity quickly drops off later in the month. Still, even if your ship isn’t directly impacted by a storm, it can cause issues at Caribbean ports.

Taking a Cruise in October

Cruise in October

Pros : If you’re not wanting to deal with heat, then October is a great time to visit the Caribbean. While the humidity is always a factor, October sees the start of a cooling trend in the weather. As well, while hurricanes can occur in October, the season is largely over so you don’t have to worry about them disrupting your trip as much. Finally, cruise prices also fall during this time of year, meaning you can book a solid deal without spending a bundle.

Cons : It shouldn’t be a surprise that April and October are two months that we consider great times to sail. Like April, the biggest con is that it can be difficult for people with kids to travel without taking their children out of school for a few days. Apart from that, the month sees good weather and cheaper fares, and it’s before the harsh winter hits many places in the U.S. and Canada, disrupting air travel to the port or the weather in the port city.

Taking a Cruise in November

Pros : By the time November rolls around, people are starting to think of warmer weather, especially if you live in a cold area. Taking a trip during this month can lead you away from the cold and gray to the warm and blue. It’s also a great time to find cheap cruises, apart from trips that sail during the Thanksgiving holiday (which are more expensive).

Cons : Scheduling around the Thanksgiving holiday can be tough, and if you have to fly to your cruise during the busiest travel time in the United States, it can mean dealing with long lines and delays at airports. Apart from that, November is a great time to book a cruise with cheap deals and nice weather in the Caribbean and The Bahamas.

Taking a Cruise in December

Pros : The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is one of the absolute cheapest times to sail. With many people not looking to travel between these two major holidays, cruise lines slash fares. It’s not unusual to see a trip costing 50% less than a comparable trip during the summer. Needless to say, cruising in December is also a big draw for people wanting to get away from the snow and cold of many places in the north.

Cons : Trying to fit a cruise between Thanksgiving and Christmas can be tough for many schedules. And while many people take a cruise during Christmas itself, those trips are more expensive. If you are traveling by air, be ready for the possibility of delays due to weather and holiday travel crowds.

What Are the Least Expensive Months to Sail?

If you want to sail for cheap, then we suggest looking at months like January, February, April, May, September and October . We find that rates during these months tend to be less expensive than for the same cruise if headed to the Caribbean. During these times fewer people are traveling, leading to generally lower cruise fare.

If headed to Alaska, then the months are more limited. The season runs largely from May through September. In this case the ‘shoulder’ months of May and September offer the lowest prices.

So Which Month Is Best to Cruise?

As mentioned above, there is no “bad” time to sail. However, if we had our pick, we would suggest either April or October if you need to fly into a cruise port . The generally good weather and low prices combine to make it a cheap and easy time to sail.

If you are within driving distance of a port, then you can expand these months to include early winter months and later fall months. During these times the weather on a cruise will be warmer than back home, prices are very affordable, and if driving, you can get to the port without worrying about airline delays.

10. Cozumel in February

cozumel sign | downtown cozumel mexico | cancun to cozume

🚢 Planning to take a Mexico cruise in February? Cozumel Island is one of the best Mexico cruise ports, especially for snorkelers and divers.

Cozumel is a Mexican Caribbean island, located about 30 minutes by ferry from Playa del Carmen . There are also flights to Cozumel, and you can land right on the island at Cozumel International Airport.

It’s also quite easy to travel from Cancun to Cozumel .

Some say Cozumel is the best place for snorkeling in Mexico, and the best place for diving in Mexico as well. Just off-shore, there’s the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest coral reef in the world, after the Great Barrier Reef.

There are plenty of ways to see the reef, even if you don’t want to swim. That’s right, the Cozumel Submarine Tour is an unforgettable experience to see these coral reefs in an actual submarine. Cozumel also has beautiful beaches, and Mayan Ruins as well.

You likely won’t get rain when traveling to Cozumel in February. However, the vast majority of all the best things to do in Cozumel involve being in, on or near the Caribbean Sea, so that makes the (possible) afternoon showers more tolerable.

Weather in Mexico in February: FAQs

rocky coast of ensenada mexico

Does it rain in Mexico in February?

It can, but it’s rare — February weather in Mexico is as close to perfect as it gets

There is a very slim chance of rain, though Nature does what it wants! If you’re visiting the beaches on the Mexican coast, an afternoon shower is always possible, though it would likely pass quickly.

What’s the best time of year to visit Mexico?

Weather-wise, the best time to travel to Mexico is from November to March.

This is during the dry season, when you’ll see very little (if any) rain, low humidity, and few mosquitoes . This is also the high or busy season in Mexico, when most people visit so they get the best weather.

For travelers who want to escape the crowds, the summer months also give you more bang for your buck.

You can still find cheap flight prices and hotel deals in late-February, but you have to look! If you want to treat yourself to a fancy resort in Mexico, opt for February over January.

When is the shoulder season in Mexico?

golf cart on a road overlooking the coast of mazatlan mexico

The shoulder season is a magical time when the weather is still nice, but the crowds have died down, and the prices have as well. It takes place just as the busy season is about to begin, and right after it ends. For my money, this is the best time to visit Mexico! The Mexico shoulder season includes the months of October to November and April to May; though May is the hottest month in Mexico.

You may still find great Mexico travel deals in other months, but you likely won’t find low prices or small crowds anytime during the busy season.

How hot is it in Mexico in February?

You might want to know, Is Mexico warm in February?

Yes — It is still quite warm in Mexico, even in February. If you don’t like tropical weather, plan to visit the cities in Mexico in February, not the beaches, which are considerably warmer than the cities.

❄️ Mexico Fun Fact : The coldest city in Mexico is the small pueblo of Ciudad Madera, Chihuahua, located in North Mexico. Ciudad Madera sees a few inches of snow each year.

Many are surprised that February is still one of the warmer months in Mexico, especially if you’re visiting the Mexico beach towns .

Average temperatures in Mexico in February hover around 80°F (26°C) on the beaches, but it can feel a few degrees hotter because of the humidity.

Is it sunny in Mexico in February?

mexico cruise weather in february

Yes — It tends to be sunny in Mexico year-round, even in the Winter season.

Since February is not a Mexico rainy season month, it likely won’t rain at all. In the event it does, just know that even if storms, cloud cover and rainfall rolls in, the sun often comes back in an hour.

What is the average temperature in Mexico in February?

Wondering, Is Mexico hot in February?

It Depends — The average weather in Mexico in February is on the warmer side, but it’s not very humid. If you’re visiting Mexico City in February, the temperatures cool down considerably at night, but this isn’t the case on Mexican beaches.

For Mexico beaches , you can expect 80°F days (26°C) and 72°F nights (22°C). With the humidity factored in, it might even feel hotter. Inland, the cities of Mexico are considerably cooler, so plan for 65°F days (18°C) and 45°F nights (7°C).

If you’re debating on when to visit, know it’s usually a bit warmer in March compared to February, because March is in the Spring. For travelers who enjoy the cooler weather, winters in Mexico are perfect, so plan to visit between December to February.

When is Mexico Hurricane Season?

mexico cruise weather in february

Mexico has about 5,800 miles (9330 km) of coastline, so there’s a lot of places susceptible to hurricanes.

⛈ Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 to November 30 , so you’re always better off visiting Mexico beaches outside of the Hurricane Season, just in case!

Should I go to Mexico in February?

Yes — Mexico February weather is ideal, and you can expect sunny, cool days.

If you’re traveling at the end of February, you will have nice weather and smaller crowds. Crowds are quite large during New Year, but continue to lower throughout the first months of the year.

Can you go to Mexico in February?

Yes — February is one of the Mexico busy season months (or, high season months). With its warm, but not hot , weather in February, many visit Mexico in February to escape the cold. It is much calmer than December, especially at the end of the month.

Are there any major Mexican holidays in February?

downtown sayulita mexico | is sayulita safe

Yes — There’s Día de la Candelaria (Candlemas) on February 2, and Valentine’s Day on February 14th.

They were both discussed at the beginning of the article, and in case you missed it, use this link to read more about the Mexico February holidays.

Though these are the major holidays, there are a few more minor holidays as well. These include Día de la Constitución  (Constitution Day) on February 5, Día de la Bandera (Flag Day) on February 24, and Dia del Ejercito (Army Day) on February 19.

Mexico Festivals in February

  • Carnaval: Similar to Mardi Gras in the U.S., Carnaval in Mexico has parades, festive floats, dancing, elaborate costumes and street parties. It takes place in several cities, including Mazatlan and Heroica Veracruz, in late-February.
  • Son Jarocho Music Festival: Held in early-February in Tlacotalpan , Veracruz, this festival showcases traditional dance and Veracruz-style music.
  • Sayulita Festival (formerly Sayulita Film Festival): A five days film, music and drinks festival in Sayulita on the Riviera Nayarit, held in late-January and early-February.

Are there mosquitoes in Mexico in February?

Yes — Mosquitoes are a way of life everywhere that has tropical weather, from Mexico and Costa Rica, to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

The mosquitoes are at their worst in the Mexico rainy season, but you can still get bit in the dry season.

You’ll want to pack insect repellent when visiting Mexico, and apply it more than once during the day.

I recommend this eco-friendly mosquito spray from Repel, or this combo reef-safe sunscreen/mosquito repellent from Bullfrog.

Bullfrog Mosquito Coast Bug Spray Insect Repellent + Sunscreen SPF 50, Pump Spray, 4.7 Fl oz 2 pack

Final Thoughts: Traveling to Mexico in February

If you’re going to Mexico in February, you’ll be in good company — as it’s the busiest month for Mexico travel. The weather is sunny, but cool all over the country, and there’s a festive feeling in the air, particularly the cities in Central Mexico.

What’s the best place to visit in Mexico in March? Head to Mexico City, and don’t miss the monarch butterfly migration in nearby Valle de Bravo . All the Mexican beaches have perfect weather in March, but if you want to escape the crowds, check out Zihuatanejo or La Paz.

You will definitely encounter crowds and high price tags in December and January, so if that’s not for you, opt for February or March.

These are closer to the shoulder season months, which have nice weather, smaller crowds and reasonable prices — it just might be the best time to visit Mexico!

Best Time to Cruise to Mexico

Best time to cruise to Mexico

One of the most exciting cruise destinations on earth, Mexico has everything to make your cruise memorable. From rainforests and coral reefs, to ancient ruins and vibrant cities, from world-class food to a fun music scene, the country has it all. If you’re planning a Mexican getaway, however, you might ask yourself what’s the best time to cruise to Mexico. In this post, we’ll answer that for you.

The Best Time to Cruise to Mexico

Similar to other popular destinations in this region, such as the Bahamas and the Caribbean , Mexico enjoys warm weather all-year round. But that alone is not enough to decide on the best time to cruise to Mexico. In fact, there are three main factors you should consider before booking a cruise.

Weather / Seasons

We’ll start with the most important factor—the weather. Mexico’s climate has basically two seasons: a wet and a dry season. Although many cruise lines offer sailings every month of the year, the majority of offerings are during the dry season. That’s the high season, which runs roughly from October through April and has by far the most comfortable weather. As in, the lowest humidity levels. So, if having perfect weather is important to you, visit Mexico in “winter”.

Mexico is best avoided in July and August, which is hurricane season. This comes with torrential rains, strong winds and high humidity. Some restaurants, accommodations and other service may also close for the season in summer. All things considered, November, January, February and March are probably the best time to cruise to Mexico.

Cozumel Sunrise

Peak Crowd Levels

Another thing to keep in mind is that the better the weather, the more people will be there. Especially during major holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s and Easter, Mexico is a hugely popular destination. Don’t expect any quietness around those dates. The high season comes with lots of traffic and expensive flights.

If you’re in need of a quiet holiday, consider visiting in the low or shoulder seasons. Especially May, June and September are recommended in that case. As mentioned above, we suggest that you avoid July and August.

Prices / Availability

Weather and the number of people affect prices significantly. However, counter-intuitively, in Mexico this actually can result in better deals during the high season than in the low season. Unlike most other cruise destinations, the best time to cruise to Mexico and score a deal is during the peak season. Make sure to book well in advance, though, as this is the most popular time of year and cruises do get full.

Note, though, that the shoulder season is also a time of year when you can grab a fantastic deal. Remember to do your research before booking. Compare prices and sign up for newsletters. You can find more tips on how to score a cruise deal in this blog post.

Cozumel Beach

Simply put, the best time to travel to Mexico is from mid-October through April, with perhaps the exception of the crazy-busy month of December . For the absolute greatest weather conditions, November is often said to be the best month to visit Mexico . This is also when the whale-watching season kicks off, and the holiday crowds are still saving up money at home.

Baja Year-Round Wildlife

Before we go into month by month wildlife seasonality, know that Baja is home to abundant wildlife year-round with endless animal experiences no matter what season you visit. Baja is known as the Galapagos of the North, after all, and Jacques Cousteau famously dubbed the Sea of Cortez ‘the world’s aquarium’- for good reason!

At any time of year you can see super pods of common and bottlenose dolphins plus orca, fin, and pilot whales. California sea lions are famously playful and abundant in these waters, as are sea turtles, sun stars, sea urchins and more than 900 colorful fish species. A productive ocean with hundreds of miles of coastline also makes for a birders’ paradise, home to numerous endemic and resident birds like cormorant, pelicans, frigatebirds, boobies and many more.

Baja Whale Watching Season

When can you see whales in Baja? Whale watching is a year-round activity in Baja with 9 different whale species to look for. But many travelers target Baja’s main migratory whale season; when every year over 97% of the earth’s gray whales, plus thousands of humpback and blue whales, make the long migration to Baja. Migratory whales begin to arrive in December and remain through April. The winter months of January through March are the best time to see gray whales in the mating and breeding lagoons along the Pacific coast. The winter months of January through March are also the best time to see migratory humpback whales at peak numbers in the Sea of Cortez.

A gray whale with blotchy light grey spots breaks the surface of the blue ocean in Baja as travelers watch and take photos from a boat nearby.

Whale Shark Season in Baja

The La Paz whale shark season runs from October to May. There are whale sharks in Baja California year round, but in the late fall through late spring a higher concentration of whale sharks can be found feeding in the rich waters of the Sea of Cortez, most reliably in the Bay of La Paz.

As winter progresses, the water temperature drops, bringing large amounts of plankton. This abundant food supply makes for slightly lower visibility, but it also attracts the largest numbers of whale sharks.

These gentle giants are an endangered species and luckily, protected under Mexican law. It should be noted that due to government regulations whale shark swimming tours in La Paz are subject to summer-time closures.

Sea of Cortez Mobula Ray Season

There are two Baja seasons for mobula rays. The first is during the ray’s breeding season between late April and July. Then, there’s the winter reverse migration that takes place between late November and early January, but is far less impressive.

The main event is the breeding season migration, when mobula rays are easy to spot due to their unusual acrobatic behavior—leaping from the water and back down for a loud belly flop on the sea’s surface. During this time, you can witness massive schools with thousands of mobulas swimming synchronously through the water. Snorkeling and diving are a popular activity as mobulas are harmless and not dangerous to humans.

Dark grey Mobula rays with white undersides leap out from the blue ocean water like they are flying.

So, When is the Best Time to Visit Baja California?

Considering the information above, we’d say you can’t go wrong visiting during the cruise season from December through May, where good weather and wildlife viewing opportunities align. Because of the comfortable weather, it’s also a great time to include a Baja California multi-day tour before or after your cruise. If gray whale watching is on your bucket list, then target the height of their calving season, mid-January through mid-March.

There are Baja seasons for every interest; activity lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, or travelers just looking to escape for some sunshine and relaxation. Is it still possible to see whale sharks in February? Or is it better to come in January?

' src=

Hi Sharon, Whale Shark Season in La Paz runs from October-April. February is a popular time to spot whale sharks in La Paz, but January is generally considered peak season for optimal viewing conditions with clearer water visibility. Both months offer great chances to encounter these majestic creatures, so plan your Baja vacation based on personal preferences and availability. Hello, we are about to book a sailing boat for the first two weeks of August. Is it a good time to go sailing there or should we wait for a cooler weather?

Dear Reader, What an exciting trip in your future! August is within Baja’s hot and humid summer; the season in which AdventureSmith does not offer Baja cruises. Our Baja Climate page provides average temperatures, rainfall and more so you can better plan and know what to expect. Note the higher rain averages in August due to Baja’s hurricane season that can bring afternoon showers to downpours.

Hear It from AdventureSmith's Baja Travelers

Great snorkeling, great food, wonderful beverages, great whale watching, great crew. Getting small groups into snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, or scenic boating was amazing!

This trip was one of the best vacations I have ever taken. The scenery, the accommodations, the activities, the staff on the ship all combined for a winner of a week. Our cozy cabin on the ship was all that we needed. The meals blew me away. This particular trip was a good value for all that we received.

We most enjoyed swimming with the Sea Lions, watching our kids play with them and the trip to watch the whales. And the snorkeling. And the hiking. And the burro ride. And and and.....

I truly don't think it could have been better. Prepare for a real adventure, geared for most 'age groups'!

"Age is just a number” and so 70 new things to do before I reach 70 is my quest. I found the perfect answer with AdventureSmith Explorations. So close to nature. So far away from the rest of the world. This was a special trip with special people.

This trip far exceeded our expectations! We loved every excursion and our guide, Allen, was knowledgeable, fun, and most importantly for us, great with our two young kids. The food that was made for us and the restaurants we went to were exactly what we hoped for - authentic. I can’t say we didn’t enjoy any of it.

Great snorkeling, great food, wonderful beverages, great whale watching, great crew.

Accommodations Review

I thought our cabin was in the perfect location. We had a gorgeous view and no one could walk past our window. We were also close to the lounge and dining room.

Meals Review

Snacks at 4 pm instead of 5 pm or 6 pm would have been nice.

Crew & Guides Review

Jeremy did a terrific job of organizing our activities. Getting small groups into snorkeling, or kayaking, or hiking, or scenic boating was amazing! We felt very safe snorkeling.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Your packing list was fine but the boat provided binoculars and water bottles so we didn't need to pack them. [Our Adventure Specialist] was very helpful in choosing a cabin.

This trip was one of the best vacations I have ever taken. The scenery, the accommodations, the activities, the staff on the ship all combined for a winner of a week. I have wanted to go to the Baja for years, but didn't think I could ever afford to do it in the way that Uncruise did it. Now I'm finally at a point in my life where I can afford it, but also this particular trip was a good value for all that we received. We met two couples on this trip that we plan to see again. What a great bonus!

Our cozy cabin on the ship was all that we needed. The fact that the cabins were cleaned/attended to daily made the small space do-able.

The meals blew me away. Not only were the meals healthful and thoughtfully planned, but special requests were honored with a smile. I enjoyed always having options, and everything I tried was delicious. I feel that the selection of beers and wines could stand to be looked at again. Some were good, and some just didn't add much to the dining experience.

All of the guides had a great level of enthusiasm, and were ready to help in any way that they could. Lindsey from Montana was exceptionally helpful and caring. Liz gave an excellent massage. Esa brought smoothies after our yoga class one morning. Jeremy had great knowledge to share on our desert hikes.

Itinerary Review

I was really there for the snorkeling, which was great, but I literally had tears streaming down my face when we encountered a blue whale one evening. I had not expected to be lucky enough to see one, and the sound of the whale exhaling as it surfaced in front of our boat is something I will remember for the rest of my life. I enjoyed the experience of being in the midst of an explosion of life. Combined with the remoteness, this was a good combination for me. There were no places that I did not enjoy. On the last night of the trip, we were treated to a slide show of the week's activities, put together by the staff.

Transportation Review

We made airport transfers on our own, so I cannot comment on that part, but all transport during the trip was great. The suggestion to stay at El Encanto the day before we met the group was a good one.

The intro materials about the Baja could stand to be bulked up a little.

Traveler Advice

Be prepared for the trip of a lifetime!

Jeremy, Sara, Lindsey, JP, Megan. All very professional, safety conscious, informative, and FUN. It was special seeing familiar faces in the crew and enjoying new ones. Our whole family really enjoyed the experience.

As always everything was great. Thanks! We're ready for the next one.

I truly don't think it could have been better.

Excellent. They were kind enough to meet my vegan requests!

All superb...especially appreciated Merith and Mike. Also, the on-ship personnel were great, in particular Jennie and Josh, stewards.

Liked them all! [I most enjoyed] hikes on the islands and skiff tours. Made most everything available to all.

Prepare for a real adventure, geared for most 'age groups'!

"Age is just a number” and so 70 new things to do before I reach 70 is my quest. I found the perfect answer with AdventureSmith Explorations. Plenty of relaxation, wonderful food immaculately presented, not to mention the exciting activities. I kayaked, snorkeled with whale sharks feeding on plankton, swam with playful sea lion pups, got close up to a baby grey whale, spotted birds plus five types of whale, hiked round cactus, ate marshmallows round a camp fire and only fell off the stand-up paddle board once. So close to nature. So far away from the rest of the world. This was a special trip with special people.

The trip of a lifetime on “Westward” ticked at least 20 first time experiences -the main one being living aboard the most beautifully restored 84 year old 87’ Historic Registered Vessel. It felt rather like being transported back to the 1930s as a guest on a friend’s yacht.

Bill, Tracie and Carlos’ love of Baja and all its wildlife is outstanding. From details of the largest creature on earth, the Blue Whale, to the life of the tiny Lion ant all imparted informally, no lectures. With such a small group and no fixed itinerary Captain Bill can allow for interests, preferences, photo opportunities and can make the best of the weather; you are at sea after all.

This trip far exceeded our expectations! We loved every excursion and our guide, Allen, was knowledgeable, fun, and most importantly for us, great with our two young kids. The food that was made for us and the restaurants we went to were exactly what we hoped for - authentic. I can’t say enough great things about this trip! We loved everything from the location of the hotel, to surfing with great surfers that helped us “get up”, meeting Donna Ramona was a once in a lifetime opportunity as well as swimming with the sea lions. I can’t say we didn’t enjoy any of it - we were getting a little traveler’s tummy by then end so galloping on a horse probably wasn’t the best thing but it was so beautiful, you couldn’t help but take it all in. We wanted to stay on Baja peninsula and the excursions were something we could do with our 6 & 7 year olds.

Bryan and Sergio were amazing hosts and Chef Iker’s food was amazing. We miss Panda❤️ Our girls would have taken her home if they could!

Loved all of it - chef iker made me my favorite chilequiles one morning and it was fantastic!

Allen made our trip! He was so accommodating, knowledgeable and all around great guide! We loved him!

Bring lots of water and hats and clothing to protect from sun.

Things To Do in Mexico in February

The majority of Mexico experiences weather that is warm and pleasant during the month of February. It is a wonderful time to participate in some extreme adventure sports, take in the sights and sounds of the country’s cultural heritage, and relax on the beach.

Since this is also one of the driest months of the year, travel to any area of the country is very straightforward during this time of year. February means there is an amazing variety of places to visit and things to do in Mexico . The following are some of our top picks.

Carnaval in Mexico

Although Carnaval is most famously celebrated in Brazil, it is also celebrated with considerable pomp in several Mexican communities.

Veracruz and Mazatlán, among other places, host their respective Carnaval celebrations beginning in the middle of February. Large-scale festivities, including parades, fireworks, and dancing, continue right up until Ash Wednesday.

Parades with elaborate costumes and floats, music, and dancing in the streets characterize this Mexican occasion, which is similar to the French and American Mardi Gras celebrations. Celebrations last all day and into the night, with participants donning costumes and releasing cascarones (eggshells loaded with confetti).

The streets of many communities are taken over by vendors selling regional delicacies, beverages, and handicrafts. The festivities in some places even include rides at amusement parks and fancy dress parties.

Valladolid Mexico

Valladolid is in the Mexican state of Yucatan , which is well-known for the natural beauty of its landscape, its many cenotes, and the world-famous archaeological site of Chichen Itza.

Although the majority of tourists only stay in Valladolid for a single day, it is highly recommended that you remain there for at least a couple of nights.

If you find yourself in Mexico in the month of February, you should make it a point to check out Valladolid. It is a pleasant tiny city with a population of 48,000 people and a compact town center, colorful homes, ancient colonial “iglesias,” and an original Mexican way of life, free of many foreign influences.

Since there is so much to see and see in the surrounding area, as well as in the city itself, Valladolid is a fantastic base for exploring nearby destinations.

Check this tour that inlcudes  Chichen Itza, Ik Kil Cenote, & Valladolid. To book this tour click here.

Ek' Balam, Yucatán

Take in the views by going on a guided tour of the Ek Balam complex, which is located to the north of Valladolid . You won’t find nearly as many tourists here, so you’ll have the opportunity to feel more immersed in genuine Mayan culture.

The ruins are located deep within the forest, and after you’ve explored them, you can finish the day off by swimming in the cenote Xcan Ché, which is located nearby.

Due to the one-of-a-kind stucco work that can’t be found anywhere else in Yucatan , the Mayan ruins at Ek Balam are unquestionably worth a visit. The wing-clad soldiers and the enormous gaping maw of hell are both very interesting.

In addition to that, this pyramid is one of the few in the Yucatan that visitors are allowed to climb.

To book this tour click here.

Relax on the island Holbox

Isla Holbox is the closest thing that Mexico has to its own Caribbean island, and it is located just a few miles off the northeastern tip of the Yucatan peninsula. A very short ferry trip from the port town of Chiquila is required to reach the pedestrian-only barrier island.

As soon as you step foot on the island, you’ll notice that time moves much more slowly. From the island’s modest main town all the way out to the palm-fringed stretches in the distance, sandy roads traverse the whole length of the island.

This island is all about relaxing and enjoying things at a slower pace. Join those daily yoga classes, enjoy a snack at one of the unpretentious beach cafés or relax in one of the little boutique hotels for an ultimate Island experience.

Coba Ruins

Coba is not the most well-known or frequented of the Yucatan ‘s archaeological sites. They are, nevertheless, the most fascinating to visit, especially the enormous pyramid at Nohoch Mul.

The Coba Ruins are an excellent educational opportunity, a breathtaking display of nature, and a strenuous physical challenge.

Coba is famous for its extensive system of sacbes, or ancient Mayan stone causeways (white roads). More than fifty of these pathways have been uncovered there, and sixteen of them are accessible to the general public.

History fans who want to escape the tourist hordes, can spend some time exploring ancient ruins in the cool forest. Here, they can enjoy a more authentic, off-the-beaten-path travel experience.

Located in western Mexico , the Riviera Nayarit stretches along about 200 kilometers (125 miles) along the Pacific Ocean. It starts from the historic port of San Blas de Nayarit to the point where the Ro Ameca empties into Banderas Bay in Nuevo Vallarta.

The name “Riviera Nayarit” was coined to advertise the Nayarit coast, which features the popular tourist destinations of Chacala Bay and Chacalilla.

The Riviera Nayarit is one of the remaining strongholds of pure, pristine coastline beauty. Over the past few years, Riviera Nayarit has quietly expanded, putting it in prime position to emerge as one of Mexico’s most popular vacation spots.

In 2020, Riviera Nayarit also received the Safe Travels designation. The city officials have been keeping an eye on the situation and paying attention to international travel alerts and advisories, the area remains one of the safest in Mexico for tourists .

National Palace Mexico City

Mexico City ( Ciudad de México ) is not only the country’s capital and political center, but also a major tourist attraction in its own right. Here, there is an abundance of world-class museums, art galleries, and other sights.

Don’t be put off by its large size. Rather, you should direct your attention to Centro Histórico de la Ciudad, a 15-square-kilometer UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to more than 1,400 significant colonial buildings dating from the 16th to the 19th century. Most of what you’re looking for can be found in this section.

Constitution Square (Plaza de la Constitución) is the city’s lively main plaza. Many of Mexico City’s top attractions, such as the National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Templo Mayor, with its Aztec treasures, are within easy walking distance.

Travel Tips for Mexico in February

● Take advantage of Mexico’s extensive transportation system. Though flights are usually the most cost-effective alternative, taking the bus may be a fun and inexpensive way to visit the countryside of Mexico.

● Wrap up warm. Some of Mexico’s most visited cities, like Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende , are located at very high altitudes, and as a result, they might experience unexpectedly cool evenings and mornings. You might want to bring a jacket along with your attractive swimsuit and shorts.

● Traveling across the various regions of Mexico is a must. In such a large country, Mexico naturally offers a wide variety of attractions. There are all kinds of landscapes in the country, from mountains to deserts to towns to beaches to jungles to canyons to plains. Different regions of the country each have their own history, culture and attractions so have a bit of everything in your itinerary.

Travel Insurance: I never leave home without travel insurance. My personal opinion is if you can afford to travel, you can afford to buy a travel insurance. All things can happen while on the road and you can never be too sure. And it's something that you'll be glad to have when you need it. For my preferred travel insurance, I use Safety Wing .

Where To Stay: I personally use Booking.com for all my accommodations. Check out for their latest deals here .

Best Time to Visit Mexico: Month by Month Breakdown

Mexico is a vast country and there is a huge range of seasons and climates across the different regions.

The weather can be roughly split into a wet and a dry season, although this mostly counts in the tropical regions south of Mexico City.

The north has a more arid, desert-like climate, while the central regions are at high altitude and enjoy much cooler weather than the rest of Mexico.

Mexico also has distinct low and high seasons when it comes to tourism, especially in touristy destinations like Cancun and Puerto Vallarta. These generally coincide with the wet and dry seasons too.

To inspire your next trip, here’s our guide on the best time to visit Mexico!

Don’t leave home without: Lonely Planet Mexico (Country Guide)

Table of Contents

Mexico Dry Season

Luxury resort pool in the Maya Riviera Mexico

The dry season is the best time to visit Mexico, and it falls between November and April.

This is peak season, so you can expect things to be busy, especially over Christmas, but Mexico is such a vast country that you can always find a way to escape the crowds.

Here’s our month by month breakdown for Mexico’s dry season.

Novem b er  in Mexico

Swimming with the Whale Sharks in Mexico

November is the start of the dry season, and for travelers, this could be the best time to visit Mexico.

Prices are still low and tourist numbers are still small compared to what’s going to hit the top destinations in December. This is a good time to visit popular destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Vallarta, as you’ll find some great deals on flights and accommodation.

As the rainy season has only just ended, it’s not the best time for diving yet, but head to Baja California and you’ll catch the start of the Whale Shark season.

Tropical Yucatan is getting much cooler and a lot less humid, so now is the time to explore the jungles and to visit those lost Mayan Ruins without working up too much of a sweat.

December in Mexico

Luxury Resort in the Maya Riviera Mexico

Weather-wise, December is easily the best time to visit Mexico. However, everyone else has the same idea too, and December is the worst time to visit Mexico if you’re looking for a quiet vacation away from the crowds!

In December, especially over Christmas and New Year, the resorts of Cancun and the Maya Riviera are packed out and prices are at their peak. It’s no different in other popular tourist spots either, such as Puerto Vallarta or Baja California.

The weather is crisp, sunny and dry though, and you’re not likely to have a single rainy day. If you’re not having a beach holiday though, then take a trip to explore the indigenous culture of Oaxaca or Chiapas where you can find beautiful weather.

January in Mexico

Mexico City

January is just as busy as December, at least for the first two weeks. This is peak season across Mexico, especially in Cancun and along the Pacific Coast.

Travel to Mexico towards the end of January though and you can start to get a few good deals again, as the crowds start to thin out.

Weather-wise this is a great time to explore the south, so enjoy the dry weather along the coast, and visit Mayan archeological sites like Palenque or Chichen Itza.

Mexico City is lovely in January, as are the central highlands, although it can get chilly at night.

February in Mexico

Lina Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel blog on Isla San Francisco in Baja

In February the weather starts to get hotter, especially in the tropical south. Up north and in the mountains it’s still very cool, however.

You can expect the odd rain shower across the country but for the most part, this is still a beautiful time to travel around Mexico .

You’ll get lower prices in Cancun while the diving and snorkeling off the coast of Cozumel Island is glorious, with sparkling clear water.

This is the perfect time to visit Baja California, on the Pacific Coast, where you’ll be right in the middle of the whale watching season, and you’ll have the chance to swim with Whale Sharks.

March in Mexico

The Cancun beach strip in Mexico

March brings a mixed bag when it comes to crowds and the weather. This can be the middle of Spring Break, so it’s a good idea to avoid the big tourist hotspots if this isn’t your scene. If you’re looking to party though, then head straight to Cancun or Tijuana.

Equally, if Easter falls in March then it can be busy everywhere, although this is a great time to soak up the local culture during Semana Santa, the holy week.

Weatherwise, it can be a little more unpredictable. The south sees more rain while the north is heating up and seeing a few thunderstorms too.

April in Mexico

David Stock Jr of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel blog exploring cenotes in Mexico

Like March, it can be a little unpredictable in April too, so plan your trip in advance to avoid spring break dates or Easter holidays, which can both fall this time of the year.

April is the last month of the dry season, although you will see the weather starting to turn. The colder winter months are over and summer is on the way, which means that along with the rain it’s getting much hotter, everywhere.

This is your last chance to see the whales and Whale Sharks in Baja California before they move on for the summer, and it’s the last chance to get really good visibility and diving conditions around Cozumel Island and along the Maya Riviera.

As the weather heats up, this is a great time to start exploring those high altitude destinations in Central Mexico, such as Guanajuato or San Miguel de Allende, where you can escape the heat.

Mexico Wet Season

Mexico colonial city

Mexico’s wet season runs from May through to October, however, this varies across the country. The south sees the most rain, and hurricanes can lash the coastlines.

It’s cooler and drier in the north this time of the year, where the climate isn’t tropical. The wet season is not the best time to visit the south of Mexico, but there are still plenty of great deals and places to explore outside of this traditional tourist hotspot.

May in Mexico

Luxury resort in Manzanillo Mexico

May is officially the start of the wet season, and you can guarantee that it’s going to be hot and it’s probably going to be rainy.

This is a good month for shoulder season travel though because you can avoid the high season crowds in places like Cancun or the Pacific Coast.

It’s fine if you don’t mind a little humidity and have a swimming pool to cool off in because you’ll only get a few hours of rain a day at most.

It’s even better in Baja California, where you can enjoy dry weather for most of May, while temperatures soar into the 30s. Mexico City has cooler weather, and it feels like it’s summer, making the capital a great option in May.

June in Mexico

chichén itzá, mexico

June is not the best time to visit Mexico, although you can get some cheap deals on flights and hotels.

The reason it’s cheap though is because it’s the start of hurricane season. While hurricanes are rare, it’s definitely going to rain, although if you don’t mind risking that for a few hours a day it might be worth it

Instead of going to the coast though, stick to the central highlands, where it’s much cooler and there’s much less rain.

July in Mexico

Remote beach in Baja Mexico

July is just as hot and rainy, and while you can get cheap deals at the resorts and great value flights across the country, it’s really not the best time to visit Mexico.

Hurricanes can hit the Caribbean and Pacific Coast, while everywhere is hot, stuffy and humid.

You get the best weather in Baja California, but make sure you have a swimming pool where you can cool off.

The other option is to stay at altitude, as you’ll find that while Central Mexico is hot, it’s not quite as hot as the coast – especially at night time.

August in Mexico

Puebla Mexico

In August, it’s still going to be uncomfortably hot across Mexico, although temperatures will start to cool off slightly, especially in the higher altitude areas of the country around Mexico City.

This is still very much hurricane season, so be prepared for this if you’re traveling to Cancun or the Pacific Coast in August.

On the plus side, there are few other vacationers around in August and the prices can be very low, on both flights and hotels!

September in Mexico

The view from the Pyramid of the Sun - best time to visit Mexico

In September, things are starting to look up again when it comes to the weather. This is still the rainy season, but the worst is behind you, and September can be a great time to escape the crowds and score some good deals.

It’s a good time to be in Mexico City, where the rain is slack anyway and the high altitude means cooler climes.

It’s also Independence day in September, so you can expect plenty of parades and fiestas.

October in Mexico

October is the best time to visit Mexico because of the Day of the Dead.

In October, it’s the last month of the rainy season and the hurricane season, and actually this can be the best time to visit Mexico.

Rainfall will be minimal, but prices are still low, so head to the beaches and make the most of the deals before the high season crowds arrive in November and December.

As a bonus, the end of October is also when you’ll be able to celebrate Day of the Dead across Mexico.

The Ultimate Guide on Baja, Mexico and When is the Best Time of Year to Visit

Baja, Mexico, or the Baja California peninsula, is a 775-mile-long peninsula that runs along the west coast of Mexico. It runs from the northern city of Mexicali down to Cabo San Lucas. The body of water that separates the Baja peninsula from mainland Mexico is the Gulf of California, with northern sections of the peninsula separated from the mainland by the Colorado River.

Discovered in the early 1500s, the Baja peninsula was initially considered a fabled paradise. It was later found not only to exist but to be a peninsula located south of what is now California, Arizona, and Utah. Today, it is geographically and politically divided into two states. The northern state is the state of Baja California, while the southern state is Baja California Sur.

Because of its many fantastic and beautiful landscapes and attractions, Baja, Mexico is a famously desirable vacation destination. The soft, warm beaches and vibrant waters are strong pull factors for all those looking for a new relaxation venue.

An added attraction to the Baja area is the diverse wildlife coupled with the pleasant climate. Cruises to Baja, Mexico, feature all sorts of wildlife visible from the cruise ship itself, including sea lions and scores of fish species. Those who wish can even wear a wetsuit and snorkeling gear and swim for an up-close encounter with the wildlife. Fortunately for those who especially enjoy snorkeling, many diverse snorkeling options are available throughout the cruise experience. Secluded coves, deep blue waters with colorful and diverse marine wildlife, and gorgeous landscapes make Baja, Mexico, an extraordinary travel destination.

Popular Modes of Travel

While it is possible to drive to Baja, Mexico, it is impractical, especially for those who live far away from the West coast. Flying to popular vacation destinations, such as Ensenada or Cabo San Lucas, is a possibility that can work well for many people. However, cruising these locations is considered the best way to travel to these beautiful, desirable vacation stops.

Cruise Liners

When looking for a cruise liner, it is crucial to determine your needs and wants and to find a company that will accommodate them. Your vacation is all about you, and it is important to get what you want out of it.

This is important because opportunities like this don't happen every day, especially for those with busy careers. These memories are meaningful, and ensuring the vacation experience goes smoothly is more important than it may seem.

Each cruise liner company will have different amenities and qualities that others may lack depending on the destination in question, the length of the cruise, and the time of year that the cruise takes place. For example, specific activities or even destinations may vary based on the weather, which fluctuates throughout the year in most climates.

UnCruise Adventures

For those looking for Baja Mexico cruises, UnCruise Adventures delivers all of your vacation needs. As mentioned above, many of the snorkeling sites featured by the landscape and marine environment of Baja, Mexico are accessible for those who embark on their journey to the Baja California peninsula with UnCruise adventures.

The incredible landscape features and marine wildlife that can be interacted with in Baja, Mexico, are accessible to tourists as they gently cruise through the open sea, enjoying balmy weather, perfect temperatures, and gorgeous views.

Weather Conditions

The Baja California peninsula has an arid subtropical climate, which means that various types of weather occur, and different times of the year when visiting will bring differences in weather. These are essential factors to consider when traveling so that potential vacation seekers are not blindsided by weather conditions they had not planned for.

Generally, the West coast's climate is mild, contributing to the tropical environment. Summers are much hotter than winters, but both seasons offer a fair, generally mild climate that facilitates an enjoyable, stress-relieving vacation.

Times to Visit

The conditions of weather and temperature tend to vary throughout the year. Because of this, it is important to be knowledgeable about the potential weather conditions that will be prevalent when you decide to take your ventures to the Baja California peninsula. Nothing can be more frustrating than being met with weather conditions you were not expecting. By choosing to be informed about the weather conditions and their varying patterns throughout the year, you plan your trip according to your needs and make the best trip possible for yourself.

January-March

Contrary to what many have imagined, weather conditions for the first few months of the year are pleasant and warm. The month of January lies during Mexico's dry season. The dry season continues through February and March as well.

In addition to the pleasant and mild weather during this period, there are various cultural celebrations in which tourists may participate during their visit. One of these is Dia de Los Reyes or Three Kings Day. Western Christianity recognizes this holiday as a celebration of the three wise men, or three Magi, who journeyed to give gifts to Jesus of Nazareth after his birth.

Another celebration that tourists may celebrate if they wish is a Catholic celebration called the Feast of San Antonio Abad. According to Catholic tradition, San Antoni pioneered the religious principle that involves fasting or reclusing as an effort of faith growth and reignition. Animals are blessed in these Church services held to celebrate San Antoni.

An important distinction to note between the months of January to February is the reality that February is generally a much busier month with respect to the amount of tourism that occurs. Those who wish to visit Baja, Mexico, with smaller amounts of tourist traffic, should consider visiting in January rather than February. At the end of the day, those looking for the best time to cruise to Mexico should consider these factors.

Hurricane Season-May to December

The reality of a tropical environment is that there are tropical storms and hurricanes. The hurricane season in Mexico generally runs from about mid-May to the end of November. While tropical storms and hurricanes may occur during all of these months, these storms happen with the most frequency between August and October. During these months, there is an increase in warmth in the ocean water and greater precipitation in the air, with a decrease in vertical wind shear.

Lovely vacation experiences and cruises to Baja, Mexico, are still available and can be wonderful during these months. Still, taking numerous precautions to ensure safety and security will be necessary. Some of these include:

  • Preparing a 72-hour kit or otherwise ensuring that necessary supplies are available on board
  • Making copies of vital documents(passports, identification, finance cards, etc.)
  • Ensuring financial coverage for your cell phone to facilitate
  • Maintaining the ability to get in contact swiftly with the U.S. Embassy
  • Regularly checking local weather forecasts for accurate information about the upcoming weather conditions
  • Dialing 078 from any phone in Baja to reach the tourist assistance hotline for helpful information or a redirection to emergency services.
  • Using waterproof packaging or containers to protect and store important documents

These precautions will help ensure a safe, lovely vacation for you and your loved ones, especially during seasons with beautiful but sometimes heavy weather.

Day-to-Day Weather in the Summer Months

While there is an increased probability of hurricanes and tropical storms during the summer months, there are plenty of benefits for vacationers in the Baja California peninsula concerning the weather.

The west coast of the Baja California peninsula is generally warm and breezy during the summers, which happens to be the drier part of the year. The climatic variability of Baja, Mexico, may be surprising to those unfamiliar with the environment. There truly is a wide variation throughout the months of the year that additionally varies depending on where you decide to take your vacation. Generally, the coast that borders the Sea of Cortez is usually warmer in temperature than the coast that borders the Pacific Ocean.

Ultimately, although there is an increase in potential weather hazards, the day-to-day weather offered by Baja, Mexico, in the summer months is delightful. However, the picture may be a bit different for those looking for cruises to Baja, Mexico. As far as availability and safety go, the best time to cruise to Mexico is generally between the months of January and May. Cozumel Weather in February: Rain, Temperatures

Cozumel weather in February is misleading because of warm days in the 80s Fahrenheit but cool nights that drop into the 60s. At least it’s usually dry.

The largest island of Mexico, Cozumel is a hugely popular destination for western Caribbean cruises . It’s also popular with people staying for an entire vacation because of its beaches, great snorkeling, Mayan ruins and day trips for shopping and dining to Playa del Carmen across the water.

Although the daytime temperatures are quite warm, the nighttime temperatures are a bit cool compared to most Caribbean destinations in February. The wind chill factor also is a bit discouraging at times for anyone who likes to spend time in the water or on the beaches.

The following averages come from a 30-year history from Mexico’s government meteorology service. They will vary somewhat from year to year, but in general they offer guidance on what to expect each month.

Temperatures in February

Cozumel temperatures in February have an average high of 84 degrees Fahrenheit or 29 Celsius, according to Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, the government’s national weather service. It’s a warm month compared to the cold winter days in the north, but it’s also the second lowest average of the year in Cozumel after January.

The average low temperature (mostly at night) is 67 degrees Fahrenheit or 19 Celsius—about the same as January.

The nighttime temperatures matter because of their impact on seawater temperatures . Seawater temperatures usually average about halfway between the highs and lows of the day.  They will be at their lowest point in the morning hours.

Coupled with the Caribbean’s trade winds, they may make swimming uncomfortable at times in the mornings and sometimes throughout the entire day.

Otherwise, daytime temperatures are warm enough for most outdoor activities.

The first consideration for anyone planning a trip to the Caribbean should be the average rainfall during the month.

The region has an annual hurricane season that dumps a great deal of rain on many of the major destinations, especially in September and October.

Other months may have spikes in rainfall, but not Cozumel in February. The average rainfall in Cozumel during February is only about 2.4 inches, according to Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, which is low for an island that sees as much as six inches a month in the fall.

February rainfall is the lowest for Cozumel except for March and April, which also happen to be peak months for cruise visitors.

The average number of days it rains is 6.5, which again is the lowest except for March and April.

Whether to Go

February weather in Cozumel is above average because of the low risk of rain, but it’s not the best of the year. It’s clear that anyone wanting to go there will probably have warmer weather in March or April.

But for that reason, prices for cruises and hotels will likely be higher in March or April. So consider a February trip in particular if better discounts are available.

The best time to go on a cruise

Gwen Pratesi

Sorry to disappoint you, but the best time to go on a cruise is not a fixed week or month, as you might hope. The best time to take a cruise varies based on your travel preferences, including where you wish to travel.

First, you'll need to consider the weather at your destination. The best time of year to visit is typically when warm, sunny days are plentiful and rain is scarce.

If you're not a fan of crowds, you'll want to pass on traveling when everyone else is going during popular vacation weeks. That might mean embracing cooler weather and a little precipitation.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If price is a major factor in choosing the perfect cruise travel date, you'll also want to look at cruises in the shoulder season, when fewer people are traveling and fares are typically lower. However, don't rule out prime travel dates. You might be able to find cheaper cruises on older ships or in less desirable cabin categories, especially if an abundance of ships sails to your preferred destination.

In the end, the best time to cruise may come down to where you can go for the right price when your schedule allows a vacation. We've compiled the best times to cruise to the most popular cruise destinations based on the weather, lowest prices and fewer crowds. However, the decision of when to travel is ultimately up to you.

Best time to cruise Alaska: June-August

mexico cruise weather in february

The cruise season in Alaska runs from mid-April to September, with a few cruise lines extending the season into early October. Nearly every month has something to recommend it, depending on what you're looking for.

When to cruise to Alaska for the best weather

If you want to avoid rain, May is typically the driest month, with plenty of sunshine and highs in the 50s. It's a great month for nature lovers to cruise to Alaska because May is when you'll see much of the wildlife emerging, including migrating gray whales, Dall sheep, moose and migratory birds.

If you want to travel to Alaska a little earlier in the season in April, the weather is cool but pleasant, and the nights are still long enough that you may be able to catch a glimpse of the northern lights.

July is the height of peak season, with the warmest weather of the year and long daylight hours. It's also the best month for wildlife viewing, especially for humpback whales, brown and black bears and migrating shorebirds and puffins. However, you should know that you'll have to deal with pesky mosquitos in late June and July, especially in the interior part of the state.

Best time to cruise Alaska for low prices

You can usually find the best prices for an Alaska cruise during the shoulder season months of April, May, September and October. For example, starting rates are as low as $603 per person for a seven-night Inside Passage cruise sailing round-trip from Seattle with Royal Caribbean in May 2024. In mid-September, the same itinerary starts at $631 per person. However, by the peak summer season in late June and July, the starting price is $921 per person.

Best time to cruise Alaska to avoid crowds

The shoulder season months are also the least crowded times to visit Alaska because kids are in school and fewer families are vacationing. Just be aware that if you head to Alaska early in the spring, some of the stores may not have opened yet. Arrive in the fall, and you may find that tour operators and shops have begun to cut back hours or have closed.

The advantage of traveling in the shoulder season is that you can experience the towns without the summer crowds and with cooler temperatures. Shoppers can take advantage of end-of-season sales on souvenirs.

Best time to cruise the Caribbean and Bahamas: December-May

mexico cruise weather in february

Almost any time of year is a good time to sail to the Caribbean or Bahamas , with year-round sunny skies, warm temperatures and glistening turquoise blue waters.

When to cruise to the Caribbean and Bahamas for the best weather

Some of the Caribbean's nicest weather is in May, at the start of shoulder season. The weather is particularly pleasant in the Southern Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Barbados, St. Lucia, Dominique, Grenada and St. Vincent, with highs in the 80s and just slightly cooler evenings in the 70s.

January through March also offers picture-perfect weather. January is the beginning of the dry season, so the humidity is lower, and the temperatures are in the 70s and 80s.

Related: Best time to cruise the Caribbean

Best time to cruise the Caribbean and Bahamas for low prices

Shoulder season in the Caribbean is May through November, the months just before peak season, which is December through April. This is the time when you'll typically find better deals on pricing, especially in May and September to November.

Fares for seven-night cruises in May 2024 are as low as $499 per person on an MSC cruise sailing round-trip from Miami and even less expensive at $399 per person come September.

The official Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to Nov. 30, falls within shoulder season, so you may need to weigh low prices with the risk of a storm affecting your trip. Also, some fares in the summer months can be higher with many families taking vacations. Prices for similar cruises with MSC between June and August range from $649 to $799.

Best time to cruise the Caribbean and Bahamas to avoid crowds

The best time to cruise to the Caribbean without all the tourists is typically in late fall and between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. You can also avoid the crowds in late April and early May after the spring break rush but before school lets out and summer vacations begin.

Related: Best time to cruise the Bahamas

Best time to cruise the Mediterranean: April-May, September-October

mexico cruise weather in february

The cruise season in the Mediterranean usually begins in April and ends in November, with peak season falling between June and September. Some cruise lines also offer sailings into the winter months to southern Mediterranean destinations, such as Egypt, Israel, Morocco, southern Spain and the Canary Islands, because they have warm weather during that time.

When to cruise the Mediterranean for the best weather

The spring (April and May) and the fall (September and October) afford some of the best weather in the Mediterranean, with sunny days and comfortable temperatures. Though the busiest season for Mediterranean cruises is typically July and August, the temperatures can be unbearably hot (85 degrees and higher).

Best time to cruise the Mediterranean for low prices

Look to the shoulder season to find the best deals on Mediterranean cruises. During April and May and September to November, the combination of cooler temperatures, a higher chance of rain and a lack of family vacations leads to more availability and lower prices for cruises.

For example, in May 2023, you can sail on a seven-night Western Mediterranean voyage from Barcelona to Rome with Princess Cruises starting at $699 per person. If you prefer to travel in the fall, you can still find a good deal on the same itinerary for $848 per person in September. In mid-June, the same voyage costs $1,132. Since you'll have the greatest choice of ships midsummer, you might luck out and find a one-off deal if you can be flexible about ship and sail date.

Best time to cruise the Mediterranean to avoid crowds

Lower prices also mean fewer crowds. The height of summer is incredibly busy in the Mediterranean, especially in smaller destinations, including the port towns in the Greek islands of Santorini and Mykonos and in popular cities in Italy, France and Croatia. The spring and fall are the optimal times to visit, with fewer tourists, cooler temperatures and lower prices. You'll also find that most everything is open during that time and easier to see without battling the crowds.

Related: Best time to cruise to the Mediterranean

Best time to cruise Hawaii: June-August

mexico cruise weather in february

Hawaii is a year-round destination, but you'll only find one ship that sails the islands throughout the entire year: Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America. Other ships sail one-way or round-trip itineraries to the Hawaiian Islands from the U.S. West Coast, typically between September and April.

When to cruise to Hawaii for the best weather

Hawaii has just two seasons due to its tropical climate. Summer is from May to October, and winter falls between November and April. There's not much variation in temperature between the two seasons, with daytime temperatures hovering around 80 degrees in the summer and not falling much more than that into the high 70s in the winter. Since the temperatures are similar during both seasons, the best time to cruise the islands is when there's less chance of precipitation, which is during the summer months of June, July and August.

Best time to cruise Hawaii for low prices

Cruises to Hawaii will be less expensive in the fall when school is in session.

Summer is peak season with family vacations and honeymooners, so prices will be higher then. Expect a lift during spring break weeks, as well. Even though January, February and March bring more rain, the winter months are also peak season for tourists … and whales.

For example, a seven-night round-trip cruise in November or early December 2024 with Norwegian Cruise Line starts at $1,649. The highest fares are in June, at $2,149. January and February fares are as high as $1,949.

If your heart is set on traveling to Hawaii in the summer, or you want to escape the winter's snow at home in February, look for deals with an early booking. You can also take a chance and wait for last-minute specials if you're flexible.

Best time to cruise Hawaii to avoid crowds

Springtime will be the quietest time to visit the Aloha State, although you might find an uptick of families traveling for spring break during March and April. The summer is the busiest time for vacationers, and the winter months bring whale-watching enthusiasts and surfers. There are also two major sporting events in January, so you'll want to avoid the crowds on Oahu and Maui during that month.

Related: Best time to cruise Hawaii

Best time to cruise Northern Europe: June-August

mexico cruise weather in february

The cruise season is short if you want to sail to Northern Europe, the Baltic or the Scandinavian fjords; itineraries run from April through October. However, if you love the cold and want to chase the aurora borealis in Norway, several lines offer northern lights itineraries in the winter months.

When to cruise Northern Europe for the best weather

The warmest months in Northern Europe are mid-June to August, making the height of the summer season the most desirable time to cruise Scandinavia and the Baltic region. This is also the Land of the Midnight Sun, where you'll have nearly 24 hours of sunlight in places like northern Norway from early June to mid-July.

The two shoulder seasons – from April to early June and September to October – offer comfortable temperatures, but you'll need to dress in layers.

Best time to cruise Northern Europe for low prices

The shoulder seasons may not be the warmest, but they typically offer better pricing than summer cruises. For example, a 14-night sailing to the Baltic with Holland America is $949 in early May 2023 but $1,329 in mid-June.

Best time to cruise Northern Europe to avoid crowds

The shoulder seasons will also have fewer passengers and tourists — and you may even have some attractions to yourself in the cities and towns.

Best time to cruise the Panama Canal: December-March

mexico cruise weather in february

Transiting the Panama Canal from the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean is a bucket-list trip for many travelers. Panama and the bordering countries in Central America have a tropical climate with lush landscapes and rainforests, so you can expect wet weather at certain times of the year. The height of the Panama Canal cruise season is between October and April.

When to cruise the Panama Canal for the best weather

You'll find moderate temperatures (in the mid-70s to low 80s) and drier weather in January and February. During those months, it's more pleasant to engage in outdoor adventures like hiking and kayaking, which are a highlight when visiting places like Panama and Costa Rica.

December, March and April also offer nice weather, although the rainy season sometimes starts as early as mid-March before continuing through the fall.

Best time to cruise the Panama Canal for low prices

It's hard to determine the best time to cruise the Panama Canal at the lowest prices. Many cruise lines offer short seasons or mix up itineraries, so there's not much grounds for comparison. However, if you want a deal, the one thing that's certain is you should not sail over the holidays.

For example, Windstar Cruises ' seven-night Costa Rica and Panama Canal sailings mostly start at $2,299 in February and March 2024 and $2,399 in January. However, its New Year's sailing starts at $2,799 per person.

Best time to cruise the Panama Canal to avoid crowds

The Panama Canal cruise season picks up at the end of the rainy season, so you'll find fewer tourists during October and November when the weather is still wet.

To avoid crowds in port, try not to cruise during the Panamanian festivals that take place in early spring and from November into the winter. These festivals can also affect the opening of attractions, restaurants, banks and other venues you might want to visit ashore.

Best time to cruise Mexico: November-May

mexico cruise weather in february

The Mexican Riviera (i.e., the Pacific coast of Mexico) is a year-round cruise destination. Most ships sail the itinerary in the fall, winter and spring because those same ships head to Alaska for the summer.

When to cruise to Mexico for the best weather

For the best weather, book your cruise during the dry season, between November and May. The weather can be cool at times along the Pacific coast, so if you're looking for warmer temperatures, you'll need to head to cities located farther south, such as Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan.

Best time to cruise Mexico for low prices

The summer months and early fall will have some of the best rates, but you'll need to take into consideration the hotter temperatures in the summer that can reach into the 90s – and with high humidity. It's also the rainy season, and it's possible to have hurricanes during these months.

For example, a seven-night round-trip voyage from Long Beach, California, along Mexico's Pacific coast with Carnival Cruise Line starts at $629 in June. The same cruise is even less expensive in October at $464 per person.

Best time to cruise Mexico to avoid crowds

The dry season is also the quietest time to cruise to Mexico. Family vacations are over, and the kids are back in school. You will, however, want to avoid booking a cruise around the holidays at the end of the year and during spring break (March and early April).

Best time to cruise Canada and New England: September-October

mexico cruise weather in february

The cruise season in Canada and New England begins in May and ends in October, with a few ships even making the voyage in April. You'll find more ships in this region between August and October as it gets closer to peak leaf-peeping season.

When to cruise to Canada and New England for the best weather

The summer offers some of the nicest weather, with daytime highs in Boston and New York between 80 and 90 degrees. Along the coastal areas in Maine and Canada, you'll find highs in the 70s in July. Be prepared for cooler evenings.

The summer months are also the best time to see several species of whales off the coast of Newfoundland, including humpback whales.

However, many travelers choose to cruise to Canada and New England specifically for the fall foliage. Peak leaf season begins around mid-September and runs through October. If fall colors are your goal, resign yourself to cooler temperatures on your sailing, especially in the evenings.

Best time to cruise Canada and New England for low prices

For the best cruise deals, look at voyages sailing before August. A seven-night sailing from Boston to Montreal in May 2024 with Holland America starts at $779 per person. A similar seven-night itinerary from Boston to Quebec City in late September starts at $1,279 per person.

Best time to cruise New England and Canada to avoid crowds

You'll have fewer crowds on shore and in the port towns during the shoulder season in the spring when kids are in school and before mid-September, which is the beginning of peak foliage season in Canada.

Summertime is busy in Canada and New England because of the optimal weather and family vacations. You can also expect more ships and crowds in town during late September and October at the height of the leaf-peeping season.

Related: The best time for a Canada and New England cruise

Best time to cruise Bermuda: April-June

mexico cruise weather in february

Bermuda's cruise season runs between April and November, with a few ships calling on Royal Naval Dockyard in December. While the pink-sand beaches and glistening, turquoise waters offer a slice of paradise, the archipelago in the western North Atlantic Ocean does not stay warm year-round. The subtropical climate of these British islands has winter temperatures that dip down into the low 60s and high 50s.

When to cruise to Bermuda for the best weather

April is one of the best months to sail to Bermuda as the temperatures are pleasant and in the 70s, and it's one of the driest months of the year, along with May. May and early June are great options for cruises to the archipelago, and you can expect highs in the low 80s by June.

July and August are the hottest months with high humidity, but it's a great time to hit the beach with water temperatures around 81 degrees.

Best time to cruise Bermuda for low prices

April through early June and September to November are typically when you'll find the cheapest prices. Norwegian Cruise Line has a seven-night itinerary sailing round-trip from Boston in April that starts at $779 per person. The same itinerary is $979 in June and $1,019 per person in July.

Best time to cruise Bermuda to avoid crowds

If you want the beaches to yourself, book a cruise in April. Even though there are festivities during the month (including Easter and the Peppercorn Ceremony), it's still early in the tourist season.

By late spring, summer and fall, there are more festivals, sporting events and golf tournaments that bring visitors to the islands. In the summertime, you'll have family vacations and people with vacation homes in Bermuda returning for the season and warmer weather.

Best time to cruise Australia and New Zealand: December-February

mexico cruise weather in february

The height of the cruise season in Australia and New Zealand begins in early October and runs through the end of April because these months are spring and summer in the Southern Hemisphere. You will find a few lines sailing an extended season Down Under.

When to cruise to Australia and New Zealand for the best weather

The summer months of December through February offer some of the best weather for cruising in Australia and New Zealand. Major cities will have high temperatures in the 70s and 80s during that time.

In Australia, summer is the perfect season to enjoy the country's beautiful beaches, especially in the south near Sydney. However, if you plan to head north to destinations like northern Queensland, know that summer is that region's wet season. Most days are sunny, but you'll likely encounter an afternoon or evening storm.

In New Zealand, summer brings long, sunny days with mild evenings. New Zealand's beaches are also a top attraction in the summer, along with outdoor activities and water sports.

Best time to cruise Australia and New Zealand for low prices

Look for the best prices during the shoulder seasons, from September to November (spring) and from March to May (fall). Avoid the December holidays when prices can be high.

For example, Celebrity Cruises has an 11-night cruise sailing round-trip from Sydney in March for $1,320. As you get closer to the holidays in December, a 13-night round-trip itinerary from Sydney with the line costs $2,231.

Best time to cruise Australia and New Zealand to avoid crowds

The shoulder seasons, when temperatures are warming up or cooling off, are a less busy time to cruise Australia and New Zealand and offer slightly lower fares.

If you don't enjoy big crowds with lots of partying, avoid a cruise to Australia during the New Year's Eve festivities, as it's one of the busiest times of year for tourists, especially in Sydney. Australia Day celebrations can also draw crowds, so be aware if your itinerary includes that January holiday.
