  • Safety, emergencies, and basics

Funchal is one of the most visited cruise port of call in the South European Atlantic itineraries during the Spring-Summer season with 597.818 passengers and over 300 cruise ship visits in 2019.

The cruise port of Funchal has a very appealing character. The port area is neat and well-kept. Overall, Funchal is safe; the locals are friendly, polite, and speak English well. Cruise passengers with walking difficulties will find it straightforward to wander around in Funchal independently. However, there are just a few things to do for those cruising with families.

Where is Funchal's cruise port

Funchal, the capital city of Madeira's archipelago (with a population of around 111,900), is located in the Southern European Atlantic region. The city and the cruise port are on Madeira Island's southern coast, on the Atlantic Ocean's shore.

Funchal is 608 miles (979 km) southwest of Lisbon on the coast of Portugal, 295 miles (474 km) north of Santa Cruz de Tenerife , and 603 miles (970 km) southeast of Ponta Delgada (Azores) ) .

Ships dock on a small dedicated cruise port with a breakwater parallel to the coast with quays for up to 3 vessels to berth. A fourth cruise ship may dock on a smaller pier on the shore, close to the CR7 Museum (Cristiano Ronaldo portuguese soccer player).

There is a terminal building in the port of Funchal. At the cruise terminal or just outside, passengers will find almost all essential services and amenities. Cruise visitors can walk to the heart of Funchal, which is no more than 1 mile (1.6 km) from the port. But you will find taxis right outside the cruise terminal charging €7.50 euros per taxi (up to 4 passengers) one way. And there is also a shuttle bus.

There is a shuttle bus in Funchal cruise port provided by the port authority charging US$9.00 (return). However, most upper-premium and luxury cruise lines offer the shuttle bus complimentary. The shuttle bus pick-up is just outside the terminal. The shuttle drop-off is in the historical city center, either or on the main street or a square. The shuttle bus drop-off locations have changed in recent years, and it would be misleading to specify one in particular.

Cruise terminal services and amenities

The cruise terminal is at the center of the long breakwater pier. Cruise passengers will find at the cruise terminal or right outside on the long breakwater the following services and amenities:

  • ATM and Money Exchange kiosk
  • Brochures and maps
  • Souvenirs, gifts, and local crafts vendors
  • International Press Kiosk
  • Taxis with sightseeing fares
  • Hop-on hop-off buses
  • Tuk-tuk sightseeing
  • Self sightseeing small electric cars

Cruise visitors can enjoy many attractions in Madeira independently, but cruise excursions are advisable to sites where a qualified guide will add extra awareness. You can easily explore the historical center of Funchal on your own, either on foot or with sightseeing services. Simply put, there are four possible ways to discover Funchal (Madeira):

  • Book a Shore Excursion
  • Sightseeing services
  • Taxi, Uber or Lift

At the time of publishing this review, both City Sightseeing and Yellow Bus Tours have been suspended due to Covid-19. However, both operated very successfully in Funchal in the past. And it is expected these services will be operational once cruising resumes. Click on the links below to check schedules and prices. Here are the sightseeing services for cruise visitors that usually run in Funchal:

  • City Sightseeing - hop-on hop-off
  • Yellow bus tours - hop-on hop-off
  • Tuk Madeira City Tours
  • Tukxi Madeira
  • Funchal Tuk Tuk
  • Citybubbles: small electric cars self GPS sightseing

10 Amazing Things To Do In the Port of Madeira | Port Overview

Pico de Torre, Madeira

Welcome to the port of Madeira!

Imagine an oasis of incomparable beauty in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, a paradise on Earth full of colors, exquisite sceneries, picturesque towns, and incredible mountain views. Madeira is an archipelago of volcanic origin located in the North Atlantic Ocean, about 400 km/249 miles to the north of the Canary Islands, and 520 km west of Morocco, Africa. It consists of a group of islands (out of which only two islands are inhabited), the main one being the island of Madeira.

Funchal is the capital of Madeira, located on the south coast of the island. It is the largest city of Madeira and one of the main stops for passenger cruise ships. In this article, read about:

Port of Madeira Overview

Cruise ships dock at the  Port of Funchal (Porto do Funchal – International Maritime Passenger Terminal), located within a 15-minute walk from Funchal city center. Funchal Port consists of a long Pontinha pier situated in a wide, natural bay sheltered by lush mountains and surrounded by endless blue waters. Madeira harbour sail-in is spectacular, so make sure you come out on the outer decks to admire the breathtaking beauty of the island before arrival.

Funchal cruise terminal has 4 berths for cruise vessels: North Wharf (Length: 260m), Pier 2 (Length: 425m), Pier 3 (Length: 347m), and Pier 8 (Length: 330m). North Wharf is closer to the city center and can accommodate smaller vessels, while Piers 2, 3, and 8 are located in the southern part of the port and can accommodate large cruise liners. Pontinha Pier boasts a modern terminal building , equipped with a tourist information desk, ATM/currency exchange, free wi-fi, cafeteria, public toilets, and a few gift shops. A taxi rank and parking are available outside on the pier.

Funchal cruise port also serves Lobo Marinho , a ferryboat operated by the Porto Santo Line that offers a connection between Madeira and Porto Santo Island.

Getting Around Madeira Port

  • Funchal city center is located approximately 1 km/0.6 miles from the port of Madeira and it takes around 15-20 minutes walk to get there. The port area is flat and suitable for wheelchair users. Funchal is partially hilly, so make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • There is a shuttle bus provided by port authorities to the city center for an additional fee, however, some cruise lines may offer it for free for their guests.
  • Taxis are also available outside the terminal. They are metered and colored yellow with a blue stripe.
  • Public buses are available in the city center and they serve routes across the whole island. There are four bus companies and the “ Horários do Funchal ” is the one serving Funchal urban areas and inter-urban routes. If you want to use the public bus, I suggest you stop by a tourist information office in the cruise terminal or the city center, as you can get maps and brochures, and check the timetables.
  • Rent a Car – Car rental in Madeira is relatively inexpensive, the roads are well-marked and it’s easy to navigate through the island. You will find numerous car rental agencies in Funchal, but you can also rent a car online .
  • Funchal Hop on Hop off buses are also available at the Funchal cruise terminal and there are two routes: The Funchal route and the Câmara de Lobos route. Check out Madeira Hop on Hop off bus tours on Viator and Get Your Guide
  • Madeira Airport (Cristiano Ronaldo Airport) is located 21.5 km/13 miles from the port of Madeira, and it takes a 25-minute drive to get there.

10 Best Things to Do in the Port of Madeira

I’ve been to Madeira several times and I tried many different things, from Monte toboggan ride and wine tasting to exploring the island’s gorgeous countryside.

Before I share the best things to do in Madeira, I invite you to grab your copy of the “ Mediterranean Cruise Port Guide” , the most comprehensive guide to 45 Mediterranean cruise ports (including Madeira) , packed with practical information, expert tips & unforgettable experiences! (PDF format/200 pages)

Book

1. Cabo Girão Skywalk

Cabo Girão is the second-highest sea cliff in the world and the highest one in Europe. It is located a 15-20 minute drive (13.5 km/8.5 miles) from the city of Funchal. It’s easy to find, as it’s one of the top attractions on the island. The majority of shore excursions include a stop at Cabo Girão and there is huge parking in front of the complex, so you can park your vehicle whether you come by bus or car.

Its recent installation is a “skywalk”, a platform that stands 580 meters above sea level where visitors can approach and stand on a see-through glass floor, admiring the fascinating panoramic views of the island. I needed a few minutes to pluck up my courage and approach the edge of the cliff – and I didn’t regret it. The view was worth it! A shop, café bar, and restrooms are available within the complex.

2. Enjoy “Poncha” at Câmara de Lobos

Only 8 km/5 miles from Funchal, on the way to Cabo Girão, lies the village of Câmara de Lobos, tucked in the picturesque bay. This traditional fishing village boasts a beautiful harbor filled with colorful boats and a center filled with local restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and several hotels.

Câmara de Lobos is also a home of “ Poncha ”, a local Madeira drink made with aguardiente de cana (distilled alcohol made from sugar cane juice), honey, and lemon or orange juice. It is available in many taverns and bars throughout the whole island but tastes best in its village of origin. Câmara de Lobos can be best admired from Pico de Torre , one of the viewpoints overlooking the village, easily accessible by both cars and buses.

Check out Câmara de Lobos tours and activities

3. Ribeira Brava

Ribeira Brava is a municipality and a beautiful little town on the southwest coast of the island, located only a 20-minute drive (19 km/12 miles) from the center of Funchal via the highway. You can also access it by taking local roads – it takes longer (up to 45 minutes), but natural sceneries are so spectacular that you will quickly forget about the ride.

Ribeira Brava is one of Madeira’s first towns and a growing tourist resort. One of the main events in the municipality is St. Peter’s festivities which take place at the end of June and give the town a lively atmosphere full of colors and music. When I visited the town, I had only one hour free so I decided to enjoy a typical Madeira dish – the “Espada” fish, a black scabbardfish usually served with banana. I couldn’t resist a traditional Madeira wine either – a perfect match.

4. Monte Toboggan Ride

Funchal toboggan is one of the most popular attractions in Madeira and a ride is a must-do activity if you are a first-time visitor. The ride starts in a 500-year-old Monte village located 4 km/2.5 miles from the Funchal city center. The neighborhood is located over 1000 meters above sea level, and there are several ways to reach it: by cable car, bus, tuk-tuk, private car, or by walking (at least 1.5 hours uphill).

The church Our Lady of Monte, Funchal

The starting point for a toboggan ride is Our Lady of Monte church , and you need to wait in line for at least 20-30 minutes for your turn (it’s always crowded there!). For individual visitors, it’s advisable to book a ticket online in advance or join one of the tours as I did due to the crowds.

The ride itself is fun and wild, but don’t worry – it’s safe and suitable for all ages. Toboggans are made from wicker and wood, they are sort of two and three-seated baskets pushed by two carriers (or drivers) dressed in white uniforms and wearing straw hats. They also have special shoes to help them to steer and brake the toboggan.

The ride down the worn, curvy road is long 2 km and lasts up to 10 minutes. It finishes in Livramento, located a 10-minute drive from the center of Funchal. Here you can grab a coffee or snacks at the café or use the restrooms before hitting the road back to the town. In Livramento you can either catch a taxi to bring you back, or you can walk downhill – it takes 20-30 minutes to reach the town on foot.

There will be professional photographers taking pictures of you once you start gliding down but you can take your phone as well. The Funchal toboggan is usually a lifetime experience for most visitors, so it’s nice to have a professionally taken photo to remember. On the official website of Funchal Toboggan, you can check the opening hours and prices: https://www.carreirosdomonte.com/

5. Funchal Cable Car Ride

The cable car is another activity in Funchal allowing you to enjoy the spectacular views of the city and the surroundings up close. The ride lasts up to 15-20 minutes and cabins are large enough to fit up to 7 people (7 seats per cabin). The departure station is Almirante Reis Park , located in the old part of the city and the final station is at Monte, in the vicinity of Monte Palace Tropical Gardens which is also one of the main attractions of the city.

Funchal Cable Car

You can also go the opposite way – start at Monte cable car station and finish the ride in the Funchal city center. The line to get on a cable car wasn’t too long: people were boarding the cable car divided into groups of 6-7 people which made the ride truly comfortable and enjoyable. The cable car ride is an authentic way to admire Madeira’s incredible charm and beauty and is a must!

6. Madeira Botanical Gardens

Once you come to Madeira, the first thing you’ll notice is how colorful the island is. The sub-tropical climate, warm and moist in combination with the soil of volcanic origin rich in minerals, makes Madeira perfect for plant growth. There is a large selection of sub-tropical colorful plants everywhere you go: in the streets, parks, hotels, private houses, and markets – everything blossoms and makes the contrasting colors of the island appealing to the eye.

Madeira Island has many botanical gardens of breathtaking beauty where visitors can enjoy the diversity of exotic plants from all corners of the earth. The most popular ones are the Monte Palace Tropical Garden , Madeira Botanical Garden , Orchid Garden , and Palheiro Gardens . The gardens are much more than typical botanical gardens: they are true masterpieces, beautifully designed, and set around fountains and lakes, boasting marvelous architecture influenced by different cultures, mostly Oriental ones.

Some botanical gardens are home to valuable and unique bird species and are part of art museums and galleries. Most of the gardens are located in Funchal and its surroundings – no need to leave the town to enjoy Madeira’s colors!

Madeira wine is a very special one – I find it completely different than any other wine! Madeira wine has a strong taste of caramel and roasted nuts, and it can range from dry to sweet – in my opinion, its taste reminds me more of brandy than the regular wine taste we are normally used to.

There are many wine lodges in Madeira and particularly in Funchal: Blandy’s is one of the most famous producers of Madeira wine and their cellars are open for visitors. Here’s where I joined a wine tasting that also included a visit to the museum – the whole tour and wine sampling lasted around 45 minutes. It was a very pleasant experience that I highly recommend!

8. Madeira’s Markets and Embroidery

Madeira’s markets are a great place for shopping and Mercado dos Lavradores or the Farmers’ Market is one of the most famous ones. It was founded in 1940 featuring an art-deco style: its façade, main entrance, and fish market contain large, traditional tile panels depicting regional themes that represent a true work of art.

The Lavradores market is the place where fresh and unique products of Madeira are being sold, such as exotic fruit, vegetables, scabbardfish, flowers… You’ll see women wearing traditional Madeiran wear and you’ll hear the island’s sounds, in one word – a truly unique Madeira experience! However, bear in mind that markets are not cheap, as they are very popular and packed with tourists!

Mercado de Lavradores, Funchal

Besides the picturesque markets, handcraft and shopping lovers should know that Madeira hand embroidery is claimed to be one of the finest of its kind. It has a long tradition and its distinctive style is unique in the world, representing the result of the mixture of many influences from all across Europe. Several shops in Madeira sell traditional Madeira embroideries: one of the most famous ones is the Bordal shop , founded in 1962 and is located in the Funchal city center.

In addition to embroidery, there are many other shops where you can find both traditional and modern crafts designed by local artists. The best place for this kind of shopping is Armazém do Mercado , a warehouse located in Funchal’s Old Town, home to a variety of shops, cafes, and a toy museum.

9. Dolphin & Whale Watching

The island of Madeira is one of the best places for whale spotting in Southern Europe. There are several species of whales and over 20 species of dolphins that can be seen in Madeira’s waters throughout the year. While dolphins can be seen almost always, the best time to see whales is between May-June and September-November. Speedboat and catamaran tours are the most popular ways of seeing these amazing sea creatures!

10. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Museum

The birthplace of the world-famous football player Cristiano Ronaldo is right here, on the island of Madeira. There is a museum located on the waterfront promenade in Funchal, only a 15-minute walk from the cruise port, and a 10-minute walk from the city center.

In front of the museum is a statue of Cristiano, a favorite spot for taking a picture. The museum that opened in 2013 portrays Ronaldo’s life story and boasts more than 130 trophies. I’ve been there twice and there were no lines in front of the museum. On the official museum website, you can check the opening times and ticket prices: https://museucr7.com/

Funchal cruise port

Port Funchal cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Funchal, Madeira Island Portugal. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Funchal is the principal port and the capital and largest city of Madeira (Portugal's Autonomous Region / Archipelago), with population around 105,000. Funchal is also one of Because of Portugal's most traveled destinations due to its cultural importance and historical heritage. Madeira's total population is over 250,000.

As cruise port, Funchal is one of the world's most visited New Year's Eve destinations (featuring a grandious fireworks display) and is one of the call ports included in most voyages to Spain's Canary Islands leaving roundtrip from the UK.

Cruise ships berth very close to downtown - at around 20-min walking distance from the port. There are taxis available and sometimes a free ferry service across the dock. The seafront area features several floating restaurants. Funchal's historic downtown is marked by mosaic pavements, narrow cobbled streets, cozy cafes and bars, numerous restaurants and cafes and several large outdoor markets selling local produce.

Tourists can take the modern cable car up to picturesque Monte to see the Church of our Lady and then take wicker-work toboggan ride down previously cobbled streets. A taxi is needed to visit the Botanical Gardens. These tranquil gardens are laid out on terraces with views of Funchal and Ribeira de Joao Gomes Gorge. From Funchal tourists can visit the small fishing village of Camara de Lobos, the 2nd highest sea cliff in the world at Cabo Girao, or Riveira Brava, high up into the clouds to Encumeada, Sao Vicente, Pico do Arieiro, Santo da Serra.

Madeira is often described as the "Island of Eternal Spring." Situated off the coast of Morocco, Funchal is Portugal's other world. Entirely volcanic in origin, the peaks of Madeira stretch out of the sea from "valleys" in the ocean depths. The volcanic soil combines with mild climate to produce an abundance of green and multicolored vegetation. Along Madeira's centre runs a mountain chain providing a spectacular contrast to the fertile coastlands where principal crops like sugarcane, grapes and bananas flourish. Terraces of farmland extend into the hills and add tiers of green beauty to the landscape.

Madeira Airport Cristiano Ronaldo (aka Funchal Airport) is named after the Madeira-born football player. The international airport is located approx 13 km (8 mi) east-northeast of Funchal and serves mostly flights to European large-city destinations, mainly due to the island's importance as a vacation travel destination.

By annual traffic, Funchal Airport is ranked Portugal's 4th busiest (after Lisbon , Oporto and Faro-Algarve) and is operated by country's airport authority company ANA Aeroportos de Portugal. Regularly scheduled flights connect daily to UK ( London , Bristol , Manchester), Germany ( Dusseldorf , Frankfurt , Hamburg , Leipzig, Hannover , Munich , Stuttgart ), France ( Paris , Lyon , Nantes , Bordeaux , Marseille ), Belgium ( Brussels ), Portugal (Lisbon, Ponta Delgada Azores ), Spain (Canaries, Bilbao , Madrid ), Switzerland ( Basel , Zurich, Geneva), Italy ( Milano ), Luxembourg City .

Port Funchal

In August 2016, a wildfire through the Madeira island affected some of the cruise itineraries with included visit to Port Funchal (locode PTFNC). P&O Cruises canceled the Azura ship's August 11 call at the port, replacing it with a day at sea. The wildfire was caused by August's high temperatures and strong winds. It prompted the evacuation of over 1,000 (residents and tourists), destroyed around 40 homes near Funchal and killed 4 people. Due to the smoke, flights to and from Madeira Airport were also disrupted. The fire started on August 9 (allegedly by arson) at the S Roque parish. It quickly spread throughout the island's southern part and to Funchal.

On New Year's Eve (NYE / December 31, 2017), the Port had docked a total of 10 cruise vessels celebrating here the new 2018 with a grandious fireworks show. The ships included MS Balmoral ( Fred Olsen ), 3 AIDA ships ( AIDAprima , AIDAsol , AIDAvita ), Mein Schiff 2 ( TUI ), CMV Columbus , Queen Elizabeth ( Cunard ), Horizon ( Pullmantur ), Ventura ( P&O UK ) and Marella Dream ( Marella / Thomson ). During NYE 2019, the cruise port reported a record day with 13 ships for the fireworks show - Balmoral, Columbus, Marco Polo/CMV , Amera/Phoenix Reisen , Saga Sapphire , AIDAcara , AIDAstella , Mein Schiff 3/TUI , Zenith/Pullmantur , P&O Aurora , Queen Victoria/Cunard , Marella Explorer , Ocean Majesty/Majestic International .

On December 18, 2017, Galp Energia completed at Port Funchal the first-ever in Portuguese seaport refueling of an LNG-powered  cruise vessel ( AIDAprima ) carried out at a Portuguese port.

  • Owned by Carnival Corporation and operated by  AIDA Cruises , AIDAprima is supplied (bunkered) by Galp LNG. The liner has average daily consumption of 42.000 standard households. LNG for the ship was delivered via cryogenic cistern truck, maintaining the gas at very low temperatures. Port's LNG supply service is partnership with the Sousa-owned Gaslink company that specializes in transportation and logistics between mainland Portugal and Port Funchal.
  • Galp Energia is Portugal's only integrated oil and gas operator. The company specializes in oil and natural gas production and refining, marketing and sales, as well as power generation. In 2016, Galp Energia reported a turnover of EUR 15 million and Net Income RCA EUR 537 million. The company employs around 6500 people, has active presence in 11 countries, and operates 25 refineries and 1435S service stations.
  • In seaports, Galp provides low-emission bunker fueling through LNG supplies, having the capacity to refuel LNG-powered vessels at any seaport in Portugal. Logistics are via partnership with Grupo Sousa.

In 2017, AIDAprima (inaugurated in 2016) started a year-round scheduled itinerary program with 7-day cruises to Madeira and Canary Islands leaving roundtrip from Gran Canaria and Tenerife .

In July 2018 was inaugurated the weekly ferry service Madeira-Portugal mainland (between Funchal and  Portimao ). The service is provided by Naviera Armas and is available during the summer months only (thru late-September). Ticket prices are between EUR 29 (Madeira residents) and EUR 85 (non-residents).

For New Year's Eve 2018, in Port Funchal docked 10 different cruise liners bringing 34,000+ tourists. The largest among the visiting on Dec 31st vessels were Queen Victoria ( Cunard ), Ventura  ( P&O UK ), Marella Dream ( Marella UK ),  AIDAnova ( AIDA ), Zenith ( Pullmantur ), Balmoral  ( Fred Olsen ), Columbus and Marco Polo ( CMV ).

Ships to Madeira Island dock along a long quay at the harbor, located at just 20-min walking distance from downtown.

In 2022, the cruise port reported a record year with handled 323 ship calls, or +8% (25 more visits) in comparison to the pre-COVID 2019 (298 handled calls). The number of received tourists was 417730. APRAM (Madeira's Port Authority) also reported that due to weather or sea conditions, a total of 17 booked cruise berthings were canceled in 2022.

Madeira and Funchal for cruise ship passengers in 2024

The mountainous island of Madeira appears as an oasis of green amidst the deep blues of the swirling and rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

Historically, the island was a welcome sight for sailors travelling to or from the Americas. Today this intermediary port status continues, with cruise liners briefly mooring here before heading on to their final destinations of the Mediterranean, Northern Europe or the Canary Islands.

Madeira may only ever be a fleeting cruise stop, but this fascinating island will leave lasting memories and entice you to return for longer.

cruise ship Funchal harbour

A cruise ship moored in Funchal harbour

All cruise ships to Madeira moor in the sheltered bay of Funchal, which is the capital and largest city on the island. Funchal is an instantaneously likeable destination for cruise passengers; the harbour is in the city centre, the climate is always pleasant and the setting is incredibly scenic.

Funchal is situated in a steep river valley, with traditional painted houses given way to forested covered hills, which are often shrouded in low-lying clouds.

Funchal is a delightful and quirky city, which is a joy to explore in the limited time allowed to cruise ship passengers. If there is one destination during your cruise that you visit as an independent tourist, free of the tour bus, then Funchal and Madeira should be it.

This article has been written for cruise ship passengers who will be visiting Madeira and Funchal as a short stop, and includes a suggested tour and independent tourist advice.

Hang-on, your only talking about Funchal, not Madeira…..

For your cruise stopover in Madeira, you are only going to have a very limited amount of time. It makes sense to explore one area well, rather than spending most of the day travelling around on a coach. There is a lot to see in Funchal and the different districts are all very varied.

Hopefully, the short taste of Funchal will encourage you to return for a longer holiday to Madeira…. Related articles: Our guide to Madeira

Save the beauty of the interior and north of Madeira for another holiday – this is the northern coastline around the town of Seixal

Why should you explore Funchal independently of the cruise ship tours?

An independent tour of Funchal will get much more out of the city than some bland and crammed coach tour. By avoiding the mass tour, you will escape the other 48 people who want to ride the toboggan run at the same time as you, who will ruin the tranquillity of tropical gardens or form long queues to board the cable car.

Also, a non-guided tour allows you the flexibility to find the restaurant you want to eat at; not some high commission venue selling non-descript food.

In other destinations, an organised tour provides the reassurance of safety, eliminates language difficulties and the dreaded possibility of getting lost and missing your boat. In relaxed and peaceful Funchal there is simply no worry of any of these potential issues.

Fortelaza do Pico funchal

The Fortelaza do Pico provides wonderful views of the city but it is a steep climb up to the fort

Funchal is a very safe destination, which has the atmosphere of a small Portuguese town rather than a major municipal centre. The most hassle any tourist will experience is an enthusiastic tour boat sellers or polite restaurant maître d' touting for business.

In Madeira language will never pose an issue as everyone speaks English fluently and often a second or third Europe language. As for getting lost, there is no real chance, as the city is a natural amphitheatre with your ship the focal point, clearly visible from anywhere in the city.

Our suggested route for a 1-day cruise tour of Funchal

Below is an interactive map showing our suggested tour for a one-day tour of Funchal. The green line shows the morning tour and the yellow the afternoon. The cable cars and toboggan ride are marked in blue.

Key stages of the route are: Stroll along the harbour front to the cable car (3) , which passes the CR7 Cristiano Ronaldo museum (1) and the Palacio de Sao Lourenco (2) . The cable car whisks passengers up to the scenic Monte district, high in the hills above the city. The Tropical Gardens (6) are close to the cable car station or it is a second cable car (4) to the Botanical Gardens (5) . The Botanical Gardens should not be missed, so long as you have sufficient time.

The Nossa Senhora do Monte (7) is an ornate baroque church and the terraces provide wonderful views of the region. At the base of the church (8) are the wicker toboggan carts which slide down the steep hill to the Livramento district (9) .

Advice: The toboggan ride does not end near the centre of Funchal; it is either a 2km downhill walk, waiting for the public bus (ever 30-40minutes) or paying over the top for a taxi. The taxi drivers know they can rip off tourists and will demand as high as € 25 for the 15minute ride.

Back in the centre of Funchal, visit the Madeira Story Centre (10) to learn the history of the Madeira. The Cidade Velha (old town) is a charming section of the city with cobbled streets, the Capela do Corpo Santo (11) and the yellow painted Sao Tiago fort (12) . Within the cobbled streets of the Old Town are many restaurants ideal for a relaxed lunch.

The next section explores the commercial heart of Funchal, and begin with the city hall (13) and Igreja do Colégio (14) . Wander the pedestrian streets to the ancient Se cathedral (15) and then along the Avenida Arriaga (16) with its classic Portuguese architecture.

If you have the energy, you could make the steep uphill walk up to the Fortaleza do Pico (17) with its wonderful view over the city. An alternative is to visit the Cristiano Ronaldo museum (1) , which is also close to the cruise ship terminal.

Poncha drink

A glass of Poncha (a sweet but strong alcoholic cocktail) is perfect after a long day of sightseeing

Mercado dos Lavradores market funchal

The lively Mercado dos Lavradores market, is the best location to experience normal Portuguese daily life

Why this route?

This route is suggested as it tries to avoid the midday crowds at the cable car and toboggan run. For lunch, there is a better selection of restaurants and cafes in downtown Funchal than in Monte.

For the final stage of the day, you are relatively close to the ferry terminal without the worry of getting from Monte to the docks as the horn of the cruise liner goes.

This suggested tour route circumvents many of the steep hills of Funchal and covers about 5km (not including any walking in the tropical or botanical gardens).

Palacio de Sao Lourenco

The Palacio de Sao Lourenco

What about the hop-on-hop-off buses?

There are two hop-on-hop-off tour buses companies which navigate around Funchal, the red or yellow brands. These do cover a lot of different areas but do not include Monte, which is generally a highlight of any visit to Funchal.

Typically, most of the areas that you would “hop off” are within the city centre and can be easily walked. If you do choose to join one of these tours it is suggested to complete the entire circuit and then get off at the stops which seems interesting. The commentary for both tours is very limited and simply laughable at certain sections.

Disembarking the Cruise ship and mooring location

All cruise liners to Madeira moor in the deep-water harbour that overlooks Funchal. The cruise liners can either be moored on the sea wall side of the harbour or the city side, but there is a tendency to moor on the sea wall side first.

No matter the location of the mooring it is only a short walk along to the waterfront and historic centre of Funchal. There is no real need to hire a taxi for this short walk and the waterfront promenade is perfectly flat.

The approach to the harbor is pretty with an excellent view of the city and the wooded hills above it. From the dock, it is a good 15 to 20 (depending how far along the quay the ship is docked) minutes slightly uphill walk into the center of town. Not recommended for wheelchair users, as the pavement is pretty but uneven.

Along the coast to the left there are main hotels, including the famous Reid's, where Churchill was a frequent guest. Traditional high tea is still being served here (about 30 Euros). Many new 5 stars hotels have recently joined in this area.

Taxis from dockside to the center of town are Euro 7.50 per taxi.

There is a shuttle bus to the city center for $9.00 (return ticket), sometimes free, depending on the cruise line.

A new cruise terminal with gangways and a few shops is in place. No duty free. Free WIFI. Tourist information desk.

Sightseeing:

This city is the capital of the island of Madeira. Funchal, where rows of white houses climb the hillsides, is comprised of three distinct sections. The Old Zone, or Old Town, on the east side, boasts historic architecture. The west side is the "touristy" hotel area, with attractions like the Casino Gardens, Quinta das Cruzes Museum and bustling Carriera Street. Between the two you'll find the city center which brims with museums such as the Madeira Wine Institute.

Many nice webcams .

Tours Excursions Transportation:

There are buses (6 Euro for an all-day ticket) and reasonable priced taxis running along the coast road. The tourist information office has printed suggested routes.

Hop on Hop off bus : Open bus with two decks, drives you around the most beautiful and historical points of the Town of Funchal. The route lasts one hour and fifteen minutes in Funchal. Recorded information is available in Portuguese, English, German, French, Italian and Spanish. The ticket for this route is valid for a whole day allowing you to get on and off the bus whenever you wish. Most buses run a 20 to 30-minute schedule (yellow line), the blue line which runs to Camara de Lobos (a small fishing village of the past) runs less frequently. Be sure to flag these buses down when you want to hop on again!

Both buses stop at the cable car station (Teleferico), which provides a rather nice trip up the mountain. 16 Euro round trip and 11 Euro one way. Or go down with the Monte Toboggan . Still in use today, they attract thousands of tourists every year who want to make this exciting experience of sliding at high speed on narrow, winding streets down to Funchal. These two-seater wicker sledges glide on wooden runners, pushed and steered by two men traditionally dressed in white cotton clothes and a straw hat, using their rubber-soled boots as brakes. About 20 Euro pp.

Hiring a car is a good option as they are inexpensive and it is a relatively easy island to navigate. As you drive up the hills, the weather can change rapidly, with mist and rain reducing visibility and there are also, some narrow cliff top roads to cope with, which can be slow-going if you are stuck behind a tour bus, so allow yourself enough time, also to give you the freedom to stop at the many viewpoints and interesting villages.

Hiking the irrigation ditches, called levadas , is also a popular way to explore the island. There are hundreds of miles of walking trails along the levadas, some of which are strenuous: such watercourses are not unique to Madeira: what is unique is their accessibility and extent. You need only venture a little way off the main roads to begin to appreciate Madeira's myriad aqueducts - for their beauty, ingenuity of design and for the courage and determination needed to bring the concept to its present glory. The island's irrigation system now comprises an impressive 2150 km (1350 miles) of channels, including 40 km (25 miles) of tunnels - and the work started centuries ago.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

The volcanic island of Madeira is covered in colorful flowers and fruit trees. Madeira is a small island only 35 miles long and 13 miles wide. However, the rugged mountains and tortuous roads make it seem much larger. Just a speck in the Atlantic, some of Madeira's residents in outlying villages have never even been to the main city Funchal, much less to the mainland because of the ruggedness of the countryside. About half of Madeira's residents live in the picturesque capital of Funchal.

Câmara de Lobos : apart from its wonderful bay, has several points of interest such as Pico da Torre, Curral das Freiras, Boca dos Namorados, Boca da Corrida and Cabo Girão Skywalk. Camera de Lobos can be reached by bus from Funchal (5 km).

One of the most traditional feasts, and certainly the largest, is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which takes place on the 15th of August. It is incredible the amount of people who pay reverence to the Virgin Mary of Monte . If you are on the island at this time of the year you might like to go up there and get your own impressions. From 14 to 15 August This is considered the main religious folk festival in the region

The Church Our Lady of the Mount, patron saint of Madeira, is also very popular with pilgrims who come here to pray or fulfill vows by the tomb of Emperor Karl I of Austria. Karl I died in 1922 at Quinta do Monte, now called Quinta Jardins do Imperador or Quinta of the Emperor's Gardens. It is a lively celebration lasting two days and transforms the romantic, picturesque parish of Monte into one of the busiest places in Madeira, full of traditional food and drink stalls and plenty of music.

Shopping and Food

Most shopping streets in Funchal are all pedestrian areas and are very well maintained and are lined with sidewalk cafes and restaurants. Most stores remain open when cruise ships are in town. However, the boardwalk market is closed during siesta.

The locally caught Espada, Scabbard Fish, can be enjoyed simply grilled with lemon, or the more traditional battered version served with deep fried locally grown bananas! This is banana country! Do not forget to visit the local "Mercato" which is the center of town. Open mostly in the morning.

Madeira wines are labeled according to one of the four types of grape used: Sercial, pale in color and very dry; Verdelho, golden color with a medium dry taste; Bual, dark gold and medium sweet; and Malmsey, the original grape which produces a sweet wine with a rich chestnut brown color.

Soft drinks include fresh fruit juices, one of which, maracuja, is a particularly delicious passion fruit nectar.

On most busy points, especially where there are many sidewalk cafes, there are free WiFi spots. They are clearly marked and are courtesy of the local government. If you are looking for one just ask directions to "El Teatro".

January 1 - New Years Day; April 25 - Freedom day; May 1-Workers day; June 10 - Camões and Portugal Day; July 1 - Madeira Day; August 15 - Assumption of Our Lady; August 21 - Funchal day; October 5 - Establishment of the Republic; November 1- All Saints Day; December 1 - Restoration of Independence; December 25 - Christmas Day.

Funchal, Madeira – A Cruise Port Guide

Funchal, Madeira

This popular cruise port features on many transatlantic cruise itineraries and is also a favourite destination for many winter sun cruises from the UK so we thought you would like a Funchal M

adeira Cruise Port Guide.

is the main town of an island in the Atlantic off the west coast of Africa but, oddly, as Madeira is part of Portugal it is therefore part of the EU and Schengen Zone. The island is volcanic and rises sharply out of the sea – making for a good deepwater port close in to the main town, Funchal and dramatic views of the cliffs, the airport and the mountains above when arriving and departing.

madeira tours from cruise port

The harbour is quite small with only a single cruise ship docking at one time. There is a very small Cruise Terminal with little in the way of facilities except a taxi rank. There are no shops, Duty Free or free wifi. However you can use your UK contract phone data here if you have an EU roaming allowance.

Funchal Harbour

As always it is worth checking out if anything special is happening while you are in port also if there is a saints day which could affect opening hours. You will find lots of information here and there is a good downloadable map of Funchal here.

What is within walking distance of Funchal cruise dock?

Madeira is a great port stop as you can DIY a lot of things almost without losing sight of the ship! There is a lot that you can see that just a short walk into town from the Cruise Terminal.  From the ship it is a 20 minute uphill walk into town, the pavement is uneven and the walk not recommended for wheelchair users. Taxis from the ship to the centre of town are €7.50 per taxi. But you don’t even have to leave the port for the first place worth noticing, you will pass it before you reach the end of the harbour arm!

Nini Design Centre

  • Nini Design Centre This Design Centre opened in late 2015 dedicated to the work of Nini Andrade Silva, a famous interior designer, born in Funchal and trained in Lisbon. There is a permanent exhibition of her work, spaces for temporary exhibitions, a shop, a restaurant and a cafe with spectacular views. Open from 11.00 every day & worth a visit more here.

Whale Watching

  • Whale Watching

tours run from Funchal harbour. The deep waters around Madeira and nearby Islands contain almost 30 species of cetaceans including Common Dolphins, Atlantic Spotted Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, Striped Dolphins, Pilot whales, Fin whale, Bryde’s whales, Killer whales and Sperm whales. Trips take place all year round depending on weather conditions, find out more here.

in addition to whale watching there are shorter, gentler tours that may include swimming stops in summer. More info on all types of boat trip here .

Cocktails at Reids Hotel

  • Reids Hotel

If you walk away from the port and up to the left you will reach the famous hotel Reid’s whose walls are adorned with pictures of the famous people who have stayed there such as Sir Winston Churchill who was a visitor in 1950. Other well known guests, whose signatures are in the hotel’s Golden Book (kept safely locked away) include Empress Zita of Austria, King Edward VIII (the Duke of Windsor)  Princess Stephanie of Monaco, Antarctic explorers Ernest Shackleton and Robert Falcon Scott, actors Roger Moore and Gregory Peck, writers Rainer Maria Rilke and George Bernard Shaw.

Traditional high tea here is very popular and many ships include a visit in the itinerary. Just a warning, groups are served in the newer extension to the hotel so if you want to eat tea (or lunch with cocktails) on the famous terrace overlooking the harbour I recommend looking relatively smart, arriving by taxi & booking in advance (you need to book an early seating, tea starts at 3.00 – check the ships departure time to be sure how long you’ve got). Otherwise you will gently be directed to the newer extension which has a similar view but is not as special. More here.

is really colourful with some vendors in traditional local dress and is worth a visit. This is a mixed fruit, vegetable, flower and fish market, just inland from the cable car station. Look out for some vibrant woven local bonnets on sale… Open from 7.00 to 7.00pm Monday to Saturday

Dried Chillies for sale in Funchal Market

  • The Madeira Story Centre

is quite close to the market. An interactive museum covering Madeira’s history, it has a Bistro with a terrace and is open 10.00 to 19.00 seven days a week

11.png

  • Funchal Cathedral is about the same distance from the market but in the opposite direction and worth a visit if you are nearby ( you could walk this way from the toboggan rides too). The brown and white building with late Gothic architecture has nave and side aisles and dates back to 1485. It has an impressive Mudéjar ceiling with geometric and animal designs carved into cedar and juniper wood and inlaid with ivory. It is probably the oldest building on the island
  • Museu CR7 Stay on the flat and walk around the port to the right you will reach the Museu CR7 , a museum dedicated to Madeiras most famous resident Cristiano Ronaldo and his footballing career highlights and trophies. He is a very popular local resident and supports many island events and institutions for example the hotel built above the museum is owned by a partnership between Ronaldo and local Pestana Group.

What can I do on a hike or bus from Funchal cruise dock?

12.png

  • Madeira Cable Car .Keep walking past the CR7, the marina and along the Avenue Do Mar to reach the Madeira Cable Car , it is about a half an hour walk from the ship (buses aren’t very convenient and would take just as long) or a 9 minute taxi ride. The Cable car costs 11€ one way or 16€ return. This takes you up to the Spa town of Monte for

Monte Palace Tropical Garden

  • Monte Palace Tropical Garden

The magnificent 70,000 sq meter Monte Palace Tropical Gardens are also accessible by bus and car and will fill a few hours easily. Thisvery carefully maintained garden of has several styles with a huge exotic plant collection as well as ponds where you can see Koi fish, swans and ducks. There is also a Museum with sculptures, a famous mineral collection and a tile collection from palaces, churches and private houses throughout the former Portuguese empire. Entrance is €12.50 and there is a good coffee shop.

Monte Palace Tropical Garden

  • Nossa Senhora do Monte Church The 18th century Nossa Senhora do Monte Church sits at the top of a flight of 60 steps but this beautiful, richly decorated church is worth the climb! If you feel really fit you can then climb the church tower too for even more specula views! Inside the church you will find the tomb of the last Austrian Emperor Karl – the last of the Hapsburg family – who lived in exile in Monte until his death in 1922.

Nossa Senhora do Monte Church

The Fountain of the Virgin

17.png

Our Lady of Monte is the patron saint of Madeira and her image is in a niche at the entrance to Monte Municipal Park, also known as Leite Monteiro Park. This large public park has ancient trees, lovely gardens. a lake and bandstand. From here it is a short walk to…

The Jardim Botânico

The Jardim Botânico cable car

which takes you on across the valley to the Botanical Gardens. The cable car route is 1600 metres long and up to 100 metres high! The route takes nine minutes and has great views back down to Funchal Harbour and City as well as a fantastic view of the mountains and forest around João Gomes River.

Botanical gardens

The Jardim Botânico da Madeira

dating from 1881 these lovely gardens are on a steep slope with a wonderful collection of plants from all over the world, with colour all year round and excellent views over the Bay of Funchal from the garden terraces. This is accessible by taxi from the port and then you could take the cable car across to Monte and go back down to town on…

The Monte Toboggans

The Monte Toboggans

this is an adventurous way to get back back down to town! Originally these sledges were a fast means of transport to Funchal for the citizens of Monte and their goods. First used in the 1850s and still in use today, they attract thousands of tourists every year. The experience of sliding at high speed on the narrow, winding streets is exciting and unforgettable! The wicker sledges hold two people and glide on wooden runners guided by two men, traditionally dressed in white cotton suits and a straw hat, who use their rubber-soled boots as brakes. The downhill journey goes to Livramento & costs 30€ for two people. The 2km journey takes about 10 minutes reaching speed up to 48 km/hour. Adventurous, yet safe, an ‘old-fashioned’ toboggan ride to make your way down from Monte is the perfect contrast to the 20th century cable car ride going up and is great fun! You will find the Monte toboggans at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the Nossa Senhora do Monte Church Opening hours: Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm. Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. From their end point you can take a local bus or taxi back to the ship or you could walk back down to the harbour in an hour or so which will take you past the Cathedral.

What should I do by private tour or cruise excursion from Funchal cruise terminal?

1.png

The island is very mountainous and rugged, land is so precious that you will see houses, crops and animals clinging to the side of the island. The new airport in the north of the island is worth watching out for as you cruise by… it is known to be one of the most hazardous airports in the world and definitely much nicer to see from the sea than it is to land on by plane!

Cliffs just past Camara de Lobos

Although distances in the island are small the roads are very mountainous so a drive will take longer than you think. You could certainly see a lot of the island with a days private tour, taxi or car hire. Driving laws are as in the UK although they drive on the European side of the road and you need to be confident on narrow mountain roads. There is one ‘motorway’ on the island but otherwise the roads are pretty tortuous. You will find branches of Europcar, Sixt and Hertz in Funchal as well as many local companies. A days car hire is quite reasonable and as it is within the EU relatively safe but if you’re not sure about driving then you could hire a taxi for the day or book a driver and guide. Various places you might want to think about visiting include…

Camara de Lobos

is a small and picturesque fishing port with a black, volcanic beach – about 8km south of Funchal

Camara de Lobos

is slightly further along the coast will bring you to one of the tallest cliff in the whole of Europe at 580m high. If you’re feeling brave (and it isn’t too windy!) you can walk out on the Skywalk, a glass platform suspended out over the drop!

Cabo Girao - would you dare…?

Walk the Levadas

As you travel the island you will notice that every inch that can be cultivated has been utilised. As part of this, there is a system of Levadas (irrigation Channels) that were created in the 16th century to take water from the wetter, windy North side of the island to the more temperate areas of the south. They run across the Paul de Serra plateau in the centre of the island and provide lovely shaded walks and waterfalls. From the car park at the Rabacal viewpoint you can walk or get a minibus to the forest station- depending on time available and fitness obviously! You should consider a guided trip here from the port as this gets you a long way off the beaten track!

The Levadas - an ancient irrigation system

Pico do Arieiro

is the highest point on the island which is accessible by car. It is about about 45 minutes drive from Funchal and you will find a cafe & gift shop at the viewing terrace. There are wonderful views but choose a clear day or you will only look down at the clouds!

Pico do Arieiro

is the islands highest peak. It is a tough 7km hike from Pico do Arieiro or drive on to Achada do Teixeira for a much gentler 2.8km uphill walk to the top, an estimated 3 hour round trip from the carpark. Details on short hikes in Madeira can be found here. As always, keep an eye on the time…….!!

Pico Ruivo

Scenic Tours

if you are happy to take a driver or tour there are many dramatic views, waterfalls, picturesque villages and wonderful bays all around the island. You will not find much in the way of facilities but you will find local restaurants and bars. A fun way to do it would be on a Motorbike and sidecar tour….

Motorbike and sidecar

I hope you enjoyed reading about how to spend your cruise stop in Funchal and that it will be useful on your cruise. Funchal features on many Transatlantic crossings, repositioning and Canary islands cruises – if you are looking for inspiration you could start here …

Funchal port guide: What to see, do & eat in Madeira city

Madeira cruise port calls are made to the splendid city of Madeira – here’s how to make the most of your time on the Portuguese island.

Words by Laura French

From colorful cobbled streets and elegant Baroque architecture to flower-bedecked gardens and quaint taverna patios, Funchal knows how to charm – and sailing into the port here is nothing short of spectacular, with dolphins frequently spotted bounding around the shore as the hills unfurl before you in swathes of lush green.

There’s history in abundance, from the Gothic remnants of the intriguing Old Town to the crumbling walls of the 17th-century fortress, and there’s plenty to do too, from tucking into a Michelin-starred meal to gliding above the city in a cable car.

So where should you start if you’re calling into this picturesque port on your next cruise? We’ve put together an insider guide to the key things to do, see and eat in the city, including the lesser-known spots to put on your radar.

How to get from Funchal cruise port to the city center

Funchal cruise terminal is around a mile from the centre of Funchal, so you can walk into the city in around 15 minutes, or take a shuttle bus. You’ll also find taxis right outside the Madeira cruise port.

funchal coast madeira cruise port

What to see and do from Funchal cruise port

Wander the zona velha.

At the heart of Funchal is its atmospheric Old Town – a mishmash of quaint, cobbled alleys where locals gather on taverna patios and bars and restaurants and boutiques spill out from candy-colored buildings.

Unmissable here is the Sé Cathedral – a 15th-century Gothic masterpiece boasting an intricately-carved wooden ceiling and ornate altarpiece – and the Palácio de São Lourenço, a well-preserved fortress built in the 16th century, now home to a collection of art from Portugal and beyond.

It’s also the home of several museums – among them the Madeira Story Center, which explores the history of Madeira – and the Forte de Sao Tigo, an imposing, 17th-century citadel built to protect Funchal from pirates following an attack in 1566.

But the highlight has to be Santa Maria Street, an art-filled alley whose doors have been painted in striking murals as part of a project to revitalize the area; think a mermaid on a swing, colorful portraits and paintings depicting cultural traditions by artists from Madeira and beyond.

Explore the Mercado dos Lavradores

When you’re done pottering, swing by the colorful Lavradores market [below, left] to stock up on local produce – expect banana passionfruit, custard apples and monstera deliciosa (or ‘delicious monster’), an unusual-looking fruit that can only be eaten when ripe. You’ll also find plenty of products made from the island’s chestnuts, alongside freshly caught (if pungent) fish and various other delicacies; come on a Friday morning for the best turn-out.

Taste Madeira wine

Madeira has long been known for its fortified wines, and you aren’t short on places to sample the stuff in the city during a call to Funchal cruise port. Among the best-known spots is Blandy’s Wine Lodge, where guided tours can take you around the museum to learn more about the history of winemaking on Madeira – from its 16th-century origins to the present day – with a tasting included afterward.

Also worth a visit when you cruise Madeira is H.M. Borges, founded in 1877 in a former cereal mill and one of only two companies in the city that produces the wine on-site, and Pereira D’Oliveira, which sells the oldest Madeira wines you can get (the first dates as far back as 1850, when it was founded).

Take the cable car to Monte

For picturesque views over Funchal and the surrounding valley on your Madeira cruise port stop, hop in a cable car from the seafront to reach Monte. This elegant, villa-lined neighborhood is home to the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens [below, center & right]– once the private residence of British Consul Charles Murray, now boasting lavish fountains, whimsical sculptures and exotic plants alongside a tranquil Japanese pond.

From here you can take a second cable car to reach the Madeira Botanical Garden, built in traditional Baroque style and boasting around 2,000 species of flora alongside sweeping views over the valley.

The real highlight, though, is the journey back down; traditional wicker baskets mounted on wooden skids leave from Monte, whisking you down the hills and into Livramento, just outside Funchal, on a ride to remember.

Swing by the beach

After some beach time on Madeira cruises? The island isn’t short on dramatic, black-sand beaches and there are several around Funchal; head to Praia Formosa, 10 minutes outside the center, for a mix of pebbled and sandy shoreline, or swing by São Tiago, located in front of its namesake fortress, for shallow, swimmable waters dotted with colorful fishing boats.

Where to eat and drink in Funchal cruise port

When it comes to food and drink while exploring beyond Funchal cruise terminal, you aren’t short on options, with traditional tascas (small tavernas) rubbing shoulders with Michelin-starred spots and fine-dining haunts.

For authentic Madeiran dishes, great steaks and a lively atmosphere, head to local favorite Zarcos and order a side of milho frito, or maize cubes, then follow it up with passionfruit mousse (Madeira is big on maracuja).

Sentidos is well worth a visit for its fresh seafood – try the parrotfish – while Kampo deserves to be on the list if you’re looking to push the boat out, with small, creative plates spanning the likes of oxtail ravioli, fresh sardines and a truffle-stuffed, doughnut-like Berlin ball, all cooked in an open kitchen.

Just as impressive is Il Vivaldi, serving Mediterranean dishes in what feels like an opulent palace – think gold-framed mirrors and chandelier-esque light fixtures – and Armazem do Sal, dishing up the likes of black scabbard fish with lime risotto and filet mignon in romantic, low-lit wood-and-stone surrounds.

On the drinks front, you won’t go thirsty during your call at Funchal cruise terminal; Bar Number Two is one of the best places to try the island’s famous drink, Poncha – a deliciously sweet concoction made with aguardiente de cana, honey, sugar and orange or lemon juice – while the city’s growing craft beer scene can be sampled at FugaCidade, tucked away on a side street and serving Portuguese wines and cheeses.

For something a little more suave, head to Galáxia Skybar, set on the rooftop of the Savoy Palace hotel and featuring a galaxy-themed bar; think star-covered ceiling, sparkling LED lights and silhouetted mountain views to accompany mixologist-made cocktails. Try the Space Truck, made with Madeira wine, Campari and hazelnut-infused gin, for a toast you’ll long remember.

Cruise Port Guide Funchal – Madeira – Portugal: docked

Funchal has several docking locations. There is one spot less than 1 km walk from the city centre, however this is usually where the smaller ships dock. The other docks lay at the southern finger pier you also see on the map here. From here it is about a 2 km walk to the city centre of Funcha. Check with your cruiseline if they will offer a shuttle bus.

Transportation

Funchal offers quite some options on how to get around. It has a large public transportation system, taxis and hop on hop off services.

Funchal Taxis

The official taxis from Madeira are yellow with a blue stripe and they do have a meter. The taxi prices are on display at the cruise terminal and in town. You’ll find that the fixed price from port to the city centre is 7,50 euro. The taxis of Madeira are also suitable to tour you around. Expect the following prices: Camara de Lobos – Cabo Girao – Pico Barcelos – Eira do Serrado = 80 euro for a taxi up to 4 people and 96 euro for more than 4 people.

Hop on hop of bus

Funchal also offers hop on hop of busses. They are not able to come to the pier, but they will send their representatives over. Aks them where to pick up the bus. This location will probably be about a 1,5 km walk or a 7,50 euro taxi ride. The nice thing about this service is that it goes further than the city of Funchal. They go along the coastline as well even towards Camara de Lobos.

Public Transport

Public transport in Madeira is a really nice and cheap way to go. A day ticket for public transport will cost you just under 6 euro. Single prepaid ticket 1,35 euro and on board ticket 1,95 euro. The tourist information has printed suggested routes to take with public transportation.

There a lot of hikes on the island. Most of them are on the Levada’s. These are irrigation ditches created by the slaves in the 15th and 16th century. It was created to get the water from the wet to the dry areas. Today these Levadas have become hiking paths. You need to plan a hike like this ahead and it is wise to contact the local tourism information for the latest updates on them.

Alternatives

Other than the regular ways to go you can also opt for a tuk tuk ride around Funchal. Or you could join the Santa Maria de Colombo ship for a nice scenic sail in the area.
