Four Colorado Thanksgiving Getaways for Relaxation

Four Colorado Thanksgiving Getaways for Relaxation

Thanksgiving marks the start of ski season in Colorado. With recent snowmaking investments by resorts like Vail Mountain, there’s a better guarantee of having more runs open by this early in ski season. It is a slower time for ski resorts making it less crowded and less expensive. And, what better opportunity to escape the cooking and cleaning? Thanksgiving dinner made easy is the icing on the cake. A ski vacation can make for a fun Colorado Thanksgiving.

But don’t forget about other Colorado areas that aren’t known for skiing. They all can provide an easy Thanksgiving with or without extended family. Most have some really fun value add-ons as a part of their Colorado Thanksgiving package.

Thanksgiving in Vail, Colorado

Vail is truly an alpine winter wonderland. Lights twinkle in the snow covered pine trees all winter long. Antlers at Vail hotel’s Early Bird Gets the Bird provides a perfect holiday getaway. Liana Moore

Liana Moore is a third-culture kid with a hangover from those days that is a severe case of wanderlust. She is more comfortable driving the cliffs of Amalfi, Italy or the dirt roads of Costa Rica or attempting to decipher the street signs of Osaka, Japan than navigating the theme parks of Disney World. But she loves it all. She doesn't believe a vacation is complete without an adventure. Her husband and kids know well that "adventure" often is code for mishap or challenge and it usually results in a good story. They seek outdoor experiences whether in the mountains, on a beach or in the jungle of a tropical country. Her favorite vacation is... all the ones she hasn't yet taken, as well as those she plans on taking again. And, that list is so, so long. But she continues to extensively explore her home state of Colorado, spends lots of time wandering Texas, California, New Mexico, Costa Rica, Mexico, Norway and has even explored Kazakhstan.

I spend Thanksgiving home with my husband and friends but I have considered many times spending the holidays somewhere else. I mean, I have several days off and that is a good opportunity to enjoy. i am digging your Colorado recommendations. #FlyAwayFriday

I’ll admit, now that I’m an adult, I love the idea of having Thanksgiving somewhere away from home where I don’t have to do the cooking. It just takes so long and I’d much rather have someone else take care of it. #FlyAwayFriday

Those are some great ideas for Thanksgiving! This is the first year that I’ll be spending Thanksgiving in San Francisco with my boyfriend and his parents. I usually take the long weekend as an opportunity to travel. But I’m really excited to spend it in a real “family” situation. Although…. Colorado looks very tempting as well… #FlyAwayFriday

Dialogue and Defiance: Clyfford Still and the Abstract Expressionists

WHEN: Thru Jan. 12, 2025 WHERE: Clyfford Still Museum Clyfford Still withdrew his paintings from the Betty Parsons Gallery in 1951, refusing to participate in a market prioritizing the fame of an artist and the price of their artworks. The following year, he surprised many by agreeing to participate in a group show at the Museum of Modern Art. His rationale for doing so was because the curator, Dorothy Miller, agreed to show Still’s works together in their own gallery. As Still saw it, his work could be viewed on its own terms and not in direct comparison to other artists—but visitors could still see the scope of American painting in the mid-century. Even with his turn away from the art world, Still saw himself participating in something larger and remained in dialogue with his contemporaries. This exhibition considers the nuanced ways in which Clyfford Still was part of an artists’ community in the late 1940s and early 1950s, despite his protestations to the contrary, and how his paintings, through their scale and composition, promote ideas of community.

Vanity & Vice: American Art Deco

WHEN: Thru Jan. 12, 2025 WHERE: Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art Vanity & Vice: American Art Deco explores the dynamic designs that emerged during the rebellious years of 1920–1933. American women were enjoying more independence inside and outside the home. Cutting hair into a chic bob, wearing rouge on lips and cheeks, hosting cocktail parties, and publicly consuming alcohol and tobacco all reinforced what it meant to be a modern woman. American designers and manufacturers responded to these societal changes with fashionable perfume atomizers and vanity sets and drinking and smoking accessories in the latest styles. This exhibition invites visitors into two distinct spaces occupied by a progressive Prohibition-era woman: her boudoir and a speakeasy. Explore the Art Deco objects that filled these rooms and how they reflect a time of freedom and change.

Flow: On the River with John Fielder

WHEN: Thru Jan. 27, 2025 WHERE: History Colorado Center This exhibition focuses on the many uses and importance of the Colorado River, taking visitors inside majestic canyons and atop the most awe-inspiring vistas along the Yampa, Gunnison and Dolores Rivers as they flow toward their confluence with the Colorado. Flow: On the River with John Fielder features a number of iconic large-format Fielder prints, as well as quotes from the renowned landscape photographer gathered carefully from his publications and interviews over the years.

Rumors of Bloomers

WHEN: Thru March 30, 2025 WHERE: Center for Colorado Women's History Rumors of Bloomers  explores women’s experiences as expressed through undergarments. Using rarely displayed objects – such as corsets, bloomers, swimming costumes, petticoats and Mother Hubbard gowns – the exhibition highlights the ways “unmentionables” have given form and shape to bodies, while also expressing identity, autonomy, agency, and protest.

The Life and Art of Tokio Ueyama

WHEN: Thru June 1, 2025 WHERE: Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art The Life and Art of Tokio Ueyama features more than 40 paintings loaned to the museum by the Japanese American National Museum and Ueyama’s family, whose combined efforts to preserve his work have allowed the story of this accomplished and cosmopolitan artist to be told at the DAM for the first time. Born in Japan, Tokio Ueyama moved to the United States in 1908 at age 18, where he made a home until his death in 1954. This exhibition tells the story of Ueyama’s life, including his early days as an art student in San Francisco, Southern California, and Philadelphia; his travels abroad in Europe and Mexico; his role as artist and community member in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles; and his unconstitutional incarceration during World War II at the Granada Relocation Center, now the Amache National Historic Site, in southeast Colorado.

Whether it’s a grand buffet in an Art Deco hotel dining room or a massive spread in the comfort of home, local restaurants have Denver diners covered for Thanksgiving. While traditionalists will find the turkey dinner of their dreams below, non-traditionalists — including vegetarians — also have options galore this year. To name just a few other interesting alternatives: Apple Blossom will be serving holiday brunch from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Lincoln’s Roadhouse is cooking up turducken gumbo for the big day (call to order by November 19); Hinman Pie is hosting a pickup pop-up at Grange Food Hall through November 30; and So Damn Gouda is doing elaborate antipasto platters for a crowd November 22 through November 24.

It’s of note that Denver sits on the ancestral lands of the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Ute tribes (the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes are now federally recognized as one Nation); many ingredients in its restaurants this year have Indigenous origins but are often served without context or acknowledgment. Here are some ways you can directly support Indigenous communities this month and beyond.

9 Things to Do in Golden with Out-of-State Friends and Relatives Visiting for Thanksgiving

Located just 12 miles from downtown Denver, historic Golden is easy to reach, has plenty of free parking, and offers a true Colorado mountain experience.   Here’s some ideas:

WALK ALONG A MOUNTAIN CREEK FOR MILES ON A FLAT, PAVED, ALL WEATHER TRAIL.

The Clear Trail has been named the prettiest trail on the Front Range, and it’s certainly one of the most accessible. You can pick the trail up in downtown Golden by the Visitors Center or there are two trailheads with 140 free parking spots just a mile west of Golden on Hwy. 6. No matter where you pick it up, in no time you will feel like you’re in a Colorado postcard. Bridges cross the creek several times and there are many benches and scenic spots with views of the beautiful river and the rugged Rocky Mountain canyon. The flat, paved trail is easy for people of all ages – and easy on those out of towners not accustomed to higher elevations. After a hike, follow the trail right to downtown Golden and stop into a restaurant or brew pub.

GIVE YOUR FLATLANDER RELATIVES A THRILL ON THE LARIAT LOOP .

Give your visitors a taste of classic Colorado mountain driving – hairpin turns, drop-offs, cliffs, and an unsettling absence of guardrails. Ah, but the views!  It’s no wonder this road is one of the state’s best scenic drives, climaxing at the 7,379-foot summit of Lookout Mountain with 360-degree views. It’s just a short walk from the free parking on top to Buffalo Bill’s museum and grave .  Don’t miss the giant gift shop – rated one of the best places for souvenirs in Colorado.

SPEAKING OF SHOPPING, “SHOP SMALL” IN A QUAINT, ALL-AMERICAN SMALL TOWN.

There’s nothing “big box” about shopping in downtown Golden.  This historic town (Colorado’s first state Capital) is filled with historic buildings now housing art galleries, fashions, quilts, Western wear, and every type of recreation gear from fly fishing to rock climbing. The Saturday after Thanksgiving is Small Business Saturday and there is no shortage of wonderful locally owned shops to visit and fanfare throughout downtown to promote “shopping small.”

GO ON AN ITTY, BITTY ART TOUR & CHECK OUT GOLDEN’S & ARTS & CULTURE SCENE.

Golden is home to a thriving arts scene, with colorful murals, sculptures and even “itty bitty art” installations along Washington Ave and the Clear Creek Trail. You can follow an online map to direct you to public art and the itty, bitty art installations or just take it on your own.

CATCH A PERFORMANCE OR LISTEN TO LIVE MUSIC.

Get your tickets for holiday performances at the new  Miners Alley Performing Arts Center , where you can catch The Great American Trailer Park Christmas, A Christmas Story & The Nutcracker. Golden always has great live music – check out the offerings at Buffalo Rose , Goosetown Station , Golden Mill and more.

DIVE INTO THE FESTIVE SPIRIT WITH HOLIDAY EVENTS.

Step into the enchanting Miracle at the Eddy pop-up bar, where seasonal cocktails and merry decorations create a cozy ambiance. At the Visitors Center, join in the heartwarming tradition of writing letters to Santa. For a dash of history with a side of joy, hop aboard historic wagon rides through charming streets, where Golden's past comes alive. Thanksgiving week in Golden promises to be entertaining for everyone. See all events !

SHOW OFF COLORADO’S SUNSHINE AT A BEER GARDEN IN COLORADO’S LARGEST BEER TOWN.

We can’t promise it, but statistics show that Thanksgiving Weekend will be dry, sunny and mild.  Impress your out-of-town friends by taking them for a beer – outdoors!  Golden has eight, year-round outdoor beer gardens.  Golden City Brewery , Mountain Toad , Golden Mill , The Eddy Taproom and Hotel , and New Terrain are just a few that combine outdoor picnic tables, food trucks, fire pits and mountain views.  And you can just casually mention that Golden brews more beer than any other town on earth – and maybe take them on a tour of the world’s largest brewery, Coors !

GAME ON! CHALLENGE YOUR FAMILY AT GOLDEN GAME GUILD.

Take your game night to a new level at Golden Game Guild , Golden’s board game café!

EAT SOMETHING OTHER THAN TURKEY!

There are more than two dozen restaurants in Golden offering everything from sushi to poke bowls, pizza, BBQ, Mexican, Thai and the great specialty of Colorado – buffalo.  Dine in Southwestern elegance at Table Mountain Inn or outdoors at the Golden Mill , or in the historic first capitol building at the Old Capitol Grill or overlooking Clear Creek at the Eddy or Golden Hotel .  There are so many choices with free parking, mountain views, and all just minutes from home!

Thanksgiving Guide to Breckenridge

November 18, 2022 / in Activities in Breckenridge / by Laurel Coffman

' title=

Things to Do on Thanksgiving Day

The winter season is just beginning in Breckenridge so spend your morning enjoying the great outdoors before your big feast. Snag a few early bird laps at Breckenridge Ski Resort (their opening day was November 9!) or hit groomed snowshoe trails at Breckenridge Nordic Center and try to spot some local wildlife.

The Frisco Adventure Park Tubing Hill and Nordic center are tentatively set to open on November 24, (perfect timing!) and the Turkey Day 5K is taking place in the town of Frisco. If a mellow morning is more your style, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy a stroll on Main Street while you get some early holiday shopping done.

Where to Eat for Thanksgiving

If you’re craving a traditional Thanksgiving meal, many restaurants in town offer family-style meals for dine-in and take-out. A few of our favorites include Blue Stag Saloon , Blue River Bistro , Hearthstone and Sevens . Check each restaurant’s website for Thanksgiving-specific menus and be sure to plan ahead and make your reservations in advance!

And hey, if traditional Thanksgiving isn’t for you, grab a slice of pizza or tacos and margaritas—nobody’s judging!

Free Thanksgiving Community Dinners

It’s the season of giving and the Breckenridge community knows how to do it well. The Rotary Club of Summit County in partnership with Keystone Resort is offering free dinner at Silverthorne Pavilion on Thanksgiving from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Father Dyer Church is also offering free meals in Breckenridge from 4 to 7 p.m.

Where to Stay for Thanksgiving

If you’d like to maintain tradition and cook your Thanksgiving meal the Grand Colorado on Peak 8 , the Grand Lodge on Peak 7  and  Grand Timber Lodge all offer unmatched amenities and residences that will make you feel right at home. There are units that are one-bedroom and larger that offer fully equipped gourmet kitchens so you can make everything from turkey to pumpkin pie.

Colorado in November: Everything You Need to Know from a Real Local

  • October 20, 2023
  • By foxintheforest

Last Updated on December 31, 2023 by foxintheforest

Don’t let the chill in the air stop you from experiencing Colorado in November! Late fall is a fantastic time of year to explore the Rocky Mountains, whether you want to do some early-season skiing or get in the holiday spirit at lots of festive events.

I’ve spent nearly 15 years living in Colorado now and November in Colorado is full of fun adventures and activities. As a long-time local, I want to help you experience all that late fall in Colorado has to offer in this guide.

About This Guide to Colorado in November

In this local guide to November in Colorado, you’ll find detailed expert advice on visiting during this season. Here’s what you’ll find:

  • What Colorado is like in November
  • Colorado weather in November
  • Skiing in Colorado in November
  • Fun events in Colorado in November
  • Things to do in Colorado in November
  • Additional Colorado travel resources

Is It a Good Time to Visit Colorado in November?

Wondering when to visit Colorado ? Well, November is an awesome time to visit Colorado if you like snow-capped peaks and wintery fun!

November in Colorado is also a great time to check out the Western Slope and 4 Corners Region. The sweltering summer heat has gone, but on a sunny day it can still feel quite pleasant in these areas.

It’s not quite as happening as the winter or summer months, but it’s a great time to take advantage of fewer crowds and cheaper lodging prices.

Ski season has just begun, and you’ll find plenty of fun things to do in Colorado in winter besides ski, too. Plus, you’ll find some fun holiday celebrations and events in Colorado in November. You can even cut down your own Christmas tree near Denver if you like.

Local Tip: A lot of trailheads and camping becomes impassible or closed in the winter months, so be sure to look up where you plan to go to get the most up-to-date conditions.

What to Expect from Colorado Weather in November

If you’re planning to visit Colorado in November, you probably want to know: does it snow in Colorado in November?

And the answer is yes, especially at higher elevations. While Denver and the foothills might be totally dry or have a blanket of snow (it really could go either way), you should definitely plan for snow in the mountains in Colorado in November.

Colorado weather in November can get cold, so you should definitely pack a puffy and other warm layers. In Denver, the high average is in the 50s in November, with lows getting down into the 30s at night, but expect it to be much colder in the mountains.

What is Colorado Like in November?

Visiting Colorado in November is an excellent way to avoid the summer crowds. While most ski resorts will be open, November is still early season for Colorado skiing, so the lift lines should be shorter.

The hiking trails will also be less busy, and even though some of the best hikes in Colorado might have wintry conditions, you can still do lots of hiking in Colorado in November.

The hike to Dream Lake and Emerald Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park is especially gorgeous with a dusting of snow on the ground.

November is also a more affordable time to visit Colorado since it’s shoulder season – the fall colors have passed but ski season isn’t yet in full swing.

This means you might be able to find cheaper flights and accommodations in Colorado in November.

Where to Ski in Colorado in November

The powder days might not be plentiful yet on the slopes in Colorado in November, but you’ll still find plenty of open runs at the resorts. Here are some of the best places to ski in Colorado in November.

Arapahoe Basin and Loveland Ski Area

Just a quick jaunt from Denver, both Arapahoe Basin (known as A-Basin by locals) and Loveland Ski Area would make great day trips for some skiing.

They are both around an hour away, so you can easily get in some laps while still having plenty of time to explore more in Colorado in November.

Keystone Resort

Keystone Resort offers some of the best skiing near Denver and opens each year in October.

Their snow-making operation ensures the slopes will be good to go in November, no matter what Mother Nature does.

Breckenridge

Breckenridge is slightly farther away from Denver and typically opens a little later than the closer resorts.

But Breck should be open by mid-month, so you can still get a start on early-season skiing in November, and you’ll find lots of other things to do in Breckenridge in winter .

One of the most popular ski areas in Colorado, Vail also typically targets mid-November for ski season opening day. Vail is definitely a winter wonderland, so visiting Vail in winter is a wonderful experience.

Steamboat typically doesn’t open until late November, but you can still sneak in some skiing if you plan your visit to Colorado around Thanksgiving or later. You can also check out one of the best hikes in Steamboat Springs if there’s no snow on the ground.

And if the snow conditions on the slopes aren’t ready yet, there are tons of other fun things to do in Steamboat Springs in winter .

Beaver Creek

Beaver Creek also targets an opening day right before Thanksgiving.

Make your November visit into a romantic getaway in Colorado by cozying up at the Frisco Inn on Galena which has hot tubs and saunas to warm up après ski.

  • Crested Butte

Another resort that opens in late November is Crested Butte. CB, as it’s referred to locally, is one of the best mountain towns in Colorado and makes a great Colorado road trip from Denver.

Exciting November Events in Colorado

November brings the beginning of the holiday season and lots of fun events to Colorado, from light shows to gift markets and more.

Blossoms of Light at Denver Botanic Gardens

One of the coolest holiday events in Denver is the stunning light display at the Botanic Gardens. Blossoms of Light begins in mid-November, and it is truly a must-see attraction in Colorado in November.

Local Tip: All tickets for Blossoms of Light need to be purchased in advance for timed entry. No tickets are available onsite.

Denver Christkindlmarket

Another signature holiday seasonal event in Denver is the Christkindlmarket , which opens mid-November.

The lively market is located in Civic Center Park and features local and European craft and food vendors, plus lots of live entertainment. Admission is free.

Colorado Country Christmas Gift Show

For more holiday spirit, head to the Colorado Country Christmas Gift Show in Colorado Springs.

You’ll find plenty of gift ideas, as well as holiday home decor and seasonal foods, and Santa Claus will make an appearance. The show runs from Nov 10-12, 2023, and is open to the public.

Local Tip: While you’re in Colorado Springs, make time to explore the hiking trails at Garden of the Gods , which will be lovely in November.

Santa’s Lighted Forest at Georgetown Loop Railroad

Take a nighttime ride on the Georgetown Loop Railroad in November and experience the sparkly spectacle of Santa’s Lighted Forest .

The station and forest are decorated with hundreds of thousands of lights, and Santa joins the fun on every train ride.

Denver Art Week

Celebrating the arts and culture of the city, Denver Art Week takes place November 3-11, 2023 (or the first Friday of the month).

Enjoy expanded First Friday Art Walks in several neighborhoods across the city and a Night at the Museums where many local museums will offer free admission.

The Best Things to Do in Colorado in November

Here are a few more awesome ways to explore Colorado in November!

Get in the Holiday Spirit in a Mountain Town

Feel merry and bright with a visit to one of Colorado’s many charming mountain towns which get all decked out for the holidays.

Telluride is a fantastic November vacation destination, and Steamboat Springs and Breckenridge are festive getaways closer to Denver.

Other mountain towns to consider include:

  • Ouray (near Telluride)
  • Winter Park

Explore the City in Denver

You could also spend lots of time in November simply exploring all the things to do in Denver .

Beyond the seasonal events mentioned above, attend an Avalanche game or lace up your own skates and hit a rink in Denver for some fun ice skating in Colorado .

Take a Scenic Drive

The scenic drives in Colorado are always stunning, and November is no exception.

The Peak to Peak Byway near Estes Park is full of mountain vistas, and the San Juan Skyway out near Ouray will take your breath away.

A few other routes include:

  • Loveland Pass
  • The Loriat Loop
  • Million Dollar Highway

Local Tip: Be aware that many high mountain pass roads close in winter, including Trail Ridge Road in RMNP, Independence Pass, Mt Blue Sky (formerly Mt Evans), and Guanella Pass .

Warm Up in the Hot Springs in Glenwood Springs

The cooler weather of November makes it a great time to visit Glenwood Springs and indulge in a hot springs soak.

While the hot springs are at the top of the list of things to do in Glenwood Springs , don’t miss the hike to Hanging Lake while you’re out there as well.

Local Tip: You need a permit for the Hanging Lake hike .

Local Tip: Hanging Lake has been experiencing temporary closures due to trail maintenance from the 2021 landslides. Always check on the permit website for the most accurate and up-to-date info!

Visit a National Park for Free on Veterans Day

On Veterans Day (November 11), all national parks in Colorado have free entry for everyone, making it the perfect time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park , Black Canyon of the Gunnison , Mesa Verde, and Great Sand Dunes.

Colorado State Parks also offer free admission to all veterans and active duty members of the military, military reserve and National Guard on Veterans Day.

Local Tip: Do be aware that free days in the park mean a high number of crowds. Plan to get there early if you don’t want to wait in a long line to get in!

Visit the Colorado National Monument

The Colorado National Monument is truly a hidden gem. Explore red rock country with steep canyons, rock spires, and inspiring desert landscapes.

November is an amazing time to visit this area because it’s not too hot (like it is during the summer). From scenic drives to awesome easy and moderate hikes, the Monument is a great way to spend the day!

You can also enjoy several Grand Junction hikes while you’re here!

USA Destinations for Thanksgiving

Looking for some outdoor adventure for your Thanksgiving Weekend? This blog is filled with great ideas for camping, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, skiing/snowboarding, and relaxing this holiday weekend.

1 | Keystone, Colorado

Keystone or Breckenridge: Which resort is better for families and beginners?

If you’ve been itching all summer to get back on the slopes, Keystone, Colorado is a perfect Thanksgiving weekend destination. With Denver only an hour’s drive away, it’s easy to fit in 4 days of adventure on the slopes. We love Keystone resort for the gorgeous views at the top of the mountain and the great food and lodging in Keystone village. As a bonus, kids ski for free when you stay at the resort. Just be sure to get in line for the gondola early as the line can get long but the crowds seem to disperse when you are on the runs.

2 | Durango, Colorado

Animas River Trail, Durango, Colorado, things to do

Another great Colorado destination is the mining town of Durango. Purgatory Resort may be open for skiing and snowboarding just in time for the long weekend. And if skiing isn’t what you had in mind for the Thanksgiving weekend, there’s much more to explore around Durango. Take a ride on the famous Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, drive the Million Dollar Highway to Silverton or Ouray, or check out the numerous hikes, mountain biking, and rock climbing.

3 | Maui, Hawaii

The Grand Wailea, Maui

If sunshine, nice restaurants, poolside drinks, and an excursion or two are what you are looking for over the Thanksgiving Weekend, then head to Maui. Some of our favorite things to do in Maui include driving the Road to Hana , whale watching, snorkeling Honolua Bay, and driving the west side of the island, finishing off with hiking the Waihe’e Ridge trail.

4 | San Diego, California

Surfing Law Street, Pacific Beach, San Diego

Another great warm-weather destination is our hometown of San Diego. My favorite reason to head to San Diego is to surf. Thanksgiving weekend often brings great swell all along the California Coast. If you’re planning on surfing, be sure to bring a wetsuit . After a morning surf sess, we always head to one of these awesome coffee shops . There are so many rad areas in San Diego such as Gaslamp District, Little Italy, North Park, and Pacific Beach. Don’t forget there’s the world-famous San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and Belmont Park. Other outdoor adventures in San Diego include SUP Mission Bay, hiking Torrey Pines, or just hanging out and watching the sunset from the beach (Ocean Beach Pier or Coronado are our favs).

5 | Kauai, Hawaii

While Maui is typically the best Hawaiian island for sunshine, our favorite island is Kauai. We love how quiet and green the north side of the Garden Isle is. It’s also the starting point to one of the most beautiful backpacking trips, The Kalalau Trail . We love the vibe of Hanalei Bay but we often go to Kauai and save a ton of money by camping here. Kauai’s resort lined south side has more sun and might be better for some well-earned relaxation this Thanksgiving weekend.

6 | Great Smoky Mountain National Park

For a scenic mountain getaway on the east coast this Thanksgiving weekend, head to the Great Smoky Mountains. I was a little shocked that the surrounding area of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg is very touristy (seriously, think Las Vegas). If you want a nice hike that is less crowded, we loved Mount LeConte via Bullhead trailhead. You may also want to check out the

While California’s coastline is beautiful, and there is plenty of fun to be had in the Sierra Mountains, one of our favorite winter things to do in California is explore the deserts of Joshua Tree and Death Valley. Joshua Tree is fun for camping, rock climbing and hiking and I love the incredibly scenic views of Artist’s Paint Pots and Zabriskie Point. But my absolute favorite is camping and star gazing in either location.

Located near Salt Lake City, this Utah ski town is home to the famous Alta Ski Area , which is known worldwide for its powder skiing. Take the Albion or Sunnyside lift on the lower mountain for beginner practice runs like Patsey Marley and Crooked Mile. Intermediate skiers can try the Race Arena and Blue Bell trails, while advanced skiers head down steep Vail Ridge.

For non-skiers, there are plenty of other activities such as naturalist walks or going birding. Of course, no Thanksgiving is complete without a delicious feast. Imagine riding in a horse-drawn sleigh through a quaint town blanketed with white snow as twinkling Christmas lights shine from the windows. If you are a Hallmark movie fan, you’ll know the kind of town I’m referring to. This year, Hallmark is releasing 40 new Christmas movies on the Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries that include many small Christmas towns in Colorado.

Here are several of our favorites for you to visit. These snowy towns made the list for their Christmas holiday spirit, decorations, natural scenery, friendliness, and activities. They are listed in no particular order as they are simply the best Christmas towns by all accounts and for all traveling preferences. Simply choose a different town for every Christmas and you are set for a good many years.

If you are considering visiting any of these Hallmark towns in 2023, please check their websites and Facebook pages to verify the times of the events.

Downtown Steamboat Springs

Best Christmas Town Colorado – 13 Destinations That Feel Like You’re In a Hallmark Movie

1. steamboat springs.

Dashing through the sparkling snow in a horse-drawn sleigh is a great way to kick off your visit to Steamboat Springs . With Christmas decorations throughout the village, magnificently decorated plus-sized trees, twinkling lights, and displays in a variety of colors, you can’t help but catch the holiday spirit. Everything around you in Steamboat Springs is merry and bright during the Christmas season.

The season kicks off in November with a Pioneer Christmas Storytime in the Festival of Trees at the Tread of Pioneers Museum. Museum workers in period costumes tell stories of pioneer and Victorian holiday traditions, and all guests are welcome to explore the Festival of Trees, a dazzling array of locally decorated trees.

Like most of the Christmas towns in Colorado, Steamboat Springs lights up the downtown tree on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

The town is full of cozy, comfortable cottages you can rent to cuddle by the fireplace and watch the latest Hallmark movie premier as the snow falls outside. A perfect place to spend Christmas holidays this year for a couple or the whole family.

Santa arrives on horseback each year and will be available for photos the first three Saturdays in December. You can find some of Santa’s elves in various shops to assist you with last-minute shopping ideas.

The Steamboat Ski area will host a New Year’s Eve celebration with fireworks.

If you are visiting after the holidays, you can enjoy the famous Winter Carnival, which includes loads of fun winter activities — from light shows to horse-drawn ski pulls — and was started “as a way to help residents cope with cabin fever during the height of the Colorado winter season,” says the Steamboat Springs Chamber.

Lightup night in Breckenridge

2. Breckenridge

Breckenridge , with a population of 4,500, is full of Christmas spirit. It’s positively brimming with activities and unique and traditional events during the holidays. Dating to the 1800s, the mining town boasts historic homes and lamp posts that make it look like a charming Victorian-era Christmas town.

What’s more, every year, Breckenridge ups the ante on Hallmark-type holiday charm by transforming its historic downtown into a sparkling winter snow-globe scene with more than 250,000 LED lights. Everyone loves the Lighting of Breckenridge when they flick the switch to turn on the town’s holiday light display.

There is something for everyone in Breckenridge during the holiday season. Dog sledding, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and world-class skiing are what everyone thinks about, but there is so much more.

All Christmas towns in Colorado have a unique event: one of the funniest and most photogenic events in Breckenridge is the Race of the Santas. It is usually held the first weekend of December, and you will see hundreds of people dressed in Santa suits hitting the town for a 5-kilometer race. Another unique event is the Bernese Mountain Dog Holiday Processional, where the colossal pups (and any other interested breed) parade down Main decked in holiday gear.

If you happen to be in town for New Year’s, you will enjoy a torchlight parade down the mountain with fireworks.

The festive spirit shines in this community with a holiday lineup guaranteed to warm any Grinch’s heart. If you’re planning a family vacation for the holidays, Breckenridge is the perfect place for a multigenerational vacation, with plenty of multi-room condos available.

Christmas lights in downtown Vail, Colorado.

Vail is one of the Christmas towns in Colorado that should definitively be on your traveling bucket list. Put on your scarf and mittens and brave the chill on a horse-drawn sleigh ride through White River National Forest . Or stroll the Bavarian-style streets of Vail decked out in garlands, bows, and twinkling lights everywhere. Listen for Christmas carolers serenading visitors in this wintery paradise.

Vail is truly Hallmark movie material. In fact, a Hallmark movie, Winter in Vail , was filmed here in 2019 and premiered in January 2020. It showcased the bell tower, a covered bridge, and the town’s gorgeous Children’s Fountain in the opening scene.

Vail Holidays begins the second weekend in December with a tree-lighting event, and the merriment continues until January 1. Events include a Kris Kringle Market, where you can purchase all kinds of holiday gifts, and an Ugly Sweater Fun Run.

The quaint town of Estes Park, Colorado, during winter

4. Estes Park

Estes Park is another charming Hallmark-type of Christmas towns in Colorado. I adore this little town of 6,000 people that truly encapsulates the magical Christmas spirit. It is the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park , which is open year-round.

Filled with cafes, hotels, and little shops, Estes Park is the perfect place to cuddle up and watch the snowfall. But don’t get too comfy, or you’ll miss the merriment of the Catch the Glow Parade & Celebration, featuring marching bands, floats, dancing, and live music. Starting November 25th, and every weekend in December, the town hosts holiday events.

The mountain town of Frisco, Colorado, during the holidays.

A cute little mountain town, Frisco is the epitome of the Hallmark movie town. With a population of only 2,700 people, everyone feels like family, and this friendly town sparkles during the holidays.

They host an Old Fashioned Christmas Bazaar in mid-November to get everyone in the mood and shopping early. The event features jewelry, photography, hand-sewn and knitted items, wood art, Christmas décor, food gifts, and grab bags for charity.

The Christmas festivities begin with a town tree lighting the Saturday after Thanksgiving and continue through the Christmas season. They host Wassail Days, which is loaded with winter and holiday traditions, including Wassail sampling, 12 Sips of Wassail Cards (including the commemorative free mug), Santa Visits, Wassail Night at the Museum, caroling, and a whole lot of Hallmark-type holiday cheer.

Mature travelers will enjoy the free sleigh rides, and if you’re adventurous, you can even try snow tubing.

The town of Aspen, Colorado, during winter time.

Aspen is truly a winter wonderland. This former mining town receives an abundance of snow, so you are pretty much guaranteed a white Christmas.

Holiday magic reigns in Aspen during the yuletide season. Things you can enjoy here include Quaint shops, steaming cups of hot cocoa, sleigh rides and Victorian caroling, which you can also witness in South Carolina towns at Christmas .

This town is one of the best Christmas towns in Colorado for mature couples to enjoy a romantic Christmas for two. There are numerous adults-only events, and the 12 Days of Aspen celebration occurs during the last 12 days of December every year. It features fireworks, magic shows, ice skating, film screenings, and more.

There is also a mountain torchlight parade on New Year’s Eve.

If you happen to be in town in January, you can attend Wintersköl 2023. Aspen’s annual “toast to winter,” features snow sculptures, fireworks, soup tasting, outdoor activities, and more during the 4-day event.

Every Hallmark movie town is a bit different. They all have that warm holiday feel, but they celebrate in different ways.

The town of Salida certainly has a unique way of celebrating. They don’t just decorate their town; they decorate a mountain. Instead of the traditional town tree, they use thousands of vibrant lights to outline a 750-foot Christmas tree on Tenderfoot Mountain. It is often referred to as Christmas Mountain. Now that sounds like something out of a Hallmark movie!

The lighting ceremony includes an indoor and outdoor festival with free cookies and hot chocolate for everyone in the community, and it is capped off with a spectacular fireworks display.

Salida truly pulls out all the stops at Christmas with its holiday events, such as the parade of lights, which greatly reminds me of towns in Maryland during the Christmas season, and a free screening of White Christmas .

Busy Bee Christmas Market in Georgetown

8. Georgetown

One of the smaller Christmas towns in Colorado, the quaint, quiet town of Georgetown is home to only 1,000 people. The town, located just off Interstate 70, is surrounded by towering snow-covered mountains, and the postcard-perfect scenery alone is enough to draw visitors.

The community comes together to put on a variety of events for the holiday season. With carolers in Victorian costumes and chestnuts roasting on an open fire, you’ll be reminded of an old-world Christmas market in Europe. The Georgetown Christmas Market is regularly ranked among the top Christmas markets in the United States and features unique handcrafted ornaments, gifts, a tree lighting, and horse-drawn wagon rides through the town. This year marks the 62nd anniversary of this special Christmas market.

A snowy night at the Mountain Lodge in Telluride, Colorado.

9. Telluride

Telluride is a beautiful mountain town in a remote part of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. The white Rocky Mountain peaks make up its backdrop, and its historic downtown and Victorian homes trimmed in bright holiday lights reflecting on the snow will make you think of Hallmark from the first moment of your visit.

Looks aren’t the only thing going for this festive town of 2,400 people. The Holiday Prelude festival gets everyone into a joyful spirit. Other events such as the Telluride Arts Holiday Bazaar, Noel Night, and the lighting of the ski tree are also fun to attend.

Sitting between the towering granite walls of a box canyon, Ouray is a classic Colorado Hallmark town. Known as the Switzerland of America, it offers unmatched winter scenery.

Winterfest Ouray kicks off the season with spectacular Christmas light displays. The main street is decked out with holiday lights against the snow-draped Rocky Mountain backdrop. You’ll feel like you are in a winter wonderland where holiday magic reigns supreme.

If you are an adventurous traveler, you can try Ice Climbing during your visit.

Mature travelers will love relaxing after a day of activity in one of the town’s mineral hot springs .

Hotel Colorado decorated for Christmas

11. Glenwood Springs

Glenwood Springs is my favorite Hallmark movie town for mature travelers. Located on Colorado’s Western Slope, the town is home to the historic Glenwood Hot Springs Resort and so much more . Soaking in the natural hot springs pool is a treat year-round, but doing it while Christmas lights twinkle all around you is magical.

For the most beautiful scenery you can imagine, ride the train from Denver to Glenwood Springs. The snow-covered Rocky Mountains glisten as the sun hits them, looking like something out of a picture book. There is just something about riding a train that rekindles the old-fashioned Christmas spirit.

There are dozens of little shops and eateries in Glenwood Springs, and the whole downtown area sparkles with lights and decorations. The trees along the main street are covered in dazzling lights. The Hotel Colorado hosts a magical light show every year.

Since 1893, the Hotel Colorado has hosted a magical light show every year with extravagant decorations. This year, they will be decorating over 60 Christmas trees and more than half a million holiday lights will be used. They will also use lights to decorate the lobby, dining areas, banquet rooms, signature suites, and the life-sized gingerbread house that is Legends Coffee & Gift Shop. And if you want to watch more amazing light shows amid the Holidays, don’t miss out on some of the amazing lightshows in West Virginia during Christmas Holidays .

The Hotel Colorado’s 32nd Annual Lighting Ceremony kicks off the holiday season the day after Thanksgiving. During the ceremony, the hotel illuminates over half a million lights on its exterior and shoots off fireworks from both bell towers. You can check out the hotel’s holiday event schedule here.

The "Polar Express" during winter time in Durango, Colorado.

12. Durango

Located in Colorado’s southwestern corner, Durango is a picture-perfect town at Christmastime. The small downtown is wonderfully decorated, lit with thousands of lights throughout the Christmas season.

During the holidays, this town transforms into a vision of white, offering various activities for a magical time, including a tree-lighting ceremony, singing with Santa, an arts and crafts fair, and a variety of boutiques selling unique Colorado-made gifts.

New this year will be the month-long Holiday Station event that involves the entire county. Be sure to check out the Durango website for the latest information.

If your grandkids are traveling with you, they will love riding the Polar Express to the North Pole, operated by the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The railroad offers several holiday-themed rides. Adults will enjoy the Cascade Canyon Winter Train ride with the glistening San Juan Mountains.

The Pagosa Springs riverwalk with its lit-up hot air balloons

13. Pagosa Springs

I can think of nothing better than sitting in the Pagosa Hot Springs surrounded by twinkling lights glistening off the snow and reflecting from the river. But guess what, it gets even better — they are holding an Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration on December 17 from 4:30–7 p.m. It is a walking tour along the riverwalk trail in downtown Pagosa. The route is decorated with lights and there are numerous entry points.

The route includes festive displays, free hot chocolate, cider, choirs, games, treats, live music, a scavenger hunt, and Santa Claus. Santa’s workshop will be set up outside the visitor center the entire holiday season.

The town celebrates the holidays with live theater productions, a Festival of Trees fundraiser, a community-wide lighting contest — last year there were about 50 participants — and more.

Colorado is filled with adorable small towns that will make you think of Hallmark movies. From sleigh rides to Santa runs, the state excels at holiday festivities. These towns are full of Christmas spirit and sparkling lights sure to help you make Hallmark moments of your own.

How Cold is Colorado in December?

January and January are the coldest with temperatures ranging between 16°F and 46°F during the festivity season. Even though there is an average of more than 300 days of sunshine in Colorado each year, Colorado gets plenty of snow during the fall, winter, and spring months.

Colorado’s position far inland and great distance from any large bodies of water result in it having hot summers and cold winters with relatively large temperature differences throughout the day.

Were Hallmark Colorado Christmas Movies Actually Filmed in Colorado?

Yes, but there has been only one. Winter in Vail was actually shot there and it showed just how gorgeous Colorado can be in the winter. Other Hallmark movies set in Colorado have fictional settings, and there are at least ten of them. Nonetheless, they are all heartwarming holiday stories that manage to give us that cool Colorado color. Hallmark’s When Calls the Heart was also filmed in Colorado.

What is the Traditional Colorado Christmas Tree?

Colorado blue spruce is an attractive tree frequently used for Christmas trees or for ornaments. Known for its symmetrical form and beautiful silver-blue color, it is also the official state tree of Colorado since 1892. Another popular Colorado Christmas tree is the Colorado Concolor or White Fir, thanks to its needles lasting for 4-6 weeks without any dropping. That means you can set it up before Thanksgiving and not have to worry about it until after New Year’s Day.

What is There To Do in Colorado at Christmas Time?

Winter in Colorado, especially the Christmas season, is the perfect season for unique activities like dog sledding, ice climbing, snowshoeing, soaking in hot spring pools, and much more. Winter may be the most magical time to pay Colorado a visit. From iconic small ski towns to large cities with delicious food, cultural events, and historic sites, Colorado has something for everyone.

Why are Hallmark Christmas Movies so popular?

Hallmark movies appeal to our sense of nostalgia for the holidays. They are undeniably heart-warming and provide a respite from the hectic reality and a story to make you feel good for the ages. During Christmas, more than 80 million people all over the USA watch at least a few minutes of a Hallmark movie, so it’s not surprising that for more than a decade, Hallmark Christmas movies have topped the networks’ popularity charts.
