ABOUT SEE & DO EAT & DRINK STAY BUDGET ADVICE

Travel Insurance

Pampanga , the province known for its culinary works, lies on the northern shore of Manila Bay.  Its location, which is less than two kilometers away from Metro Manila , makes the province a great destination for quick trips to get away from the very busy life in the metropolis.

It is nicknamed as the Culinary Capital of the Philippines but there is more to Pampanga than just the popular foods originated in the province.  It has natural and manmade attractions therefore providing fun activities for locals and tourists alike.  It got another nickname as Christmas Capital of the Philippines due to the Giant Lantern Festival which celebrates the start of the Christmas season in the country.

Pampanga Province Location Map

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Pampanga summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

SEE & DO

The following is your guide to places to see and activities to enjoy while in Pampanga.

1 | Explore Mount Arayat National Park

One of the oldest national parks in the country, Mount Arayat National Park is more developed than others with its concrete trails, pools, and huts.  It has a trail leading to the peak of Mount Arayat which offers the view of Pampanga River, the caldera-like crater, and the mountains of Zambales , Bataan , and Sierra Madre.

2 | Visit Candaba Bird Sanctuary

A great place to see migratory birds, Candaba Bird Sanctuary is a large piece of land that hosts different species of migratory birds such as Philippine mallard which is endemic to the Philippines.  Most birds, however, have migrated from Russia and the northern parts of Asia.  This haven in the town of Candaba is definitely a perfect destination for bird watching and wildlife photography.

3 | See the waterfalls in Porac

Apart from mountains, Pampanga is blessed with several waterfalls, too.  The town of Porac alone has three – Miyamit Falls which boasts of its clean and potable water, Darabulbul Falls (also called Dara Falls), and Sapang Anka Falls which can be a challenge to reach.  The jump-off point to Mt. Pinatubo Twin Falls is also in Porac.

4 | Spend a day of adventures at Sandbox and Sky Ranch

Sandbox is another destination in Porac which adventure junkies would love.  Its roller coaster zipline is the first in Asia and its giant swing is the tallest in the Philippines.  Other attractions to make the day more exciting are aerial walk, ATV/UTV rides, free fall, outdoor archery, and rappelling.

Like Sandbox, Sky Ranch in San Fernando offers a day of adrenaline rush with its wide range of rides and attractions such as Super Viking, Drop Tower, Log Flume Ride, Loop Roller Coaster, Space Shuttle, and the gigantic ferris wheel called Pampanga Eye, the tallest and biggest ferris wheel in the Philippines so far.  There are kid-friendly and family rides as well so there’s surely for everyone to enjoy.

5 | Experience water slides at Aqua Planet

Aqua Planet offers another kind of thrill and adventure for adults and kids alike.  With 38 slides, two wave pools, and other attractions, the theme park surely is an experience one can never forget.

6 | Sightseeing at Nayong Pilipino and Clark Museum and 4D Theater

Nayong Pilipino and Clark Museum and 4D Theater are two places in Pampanga where you can learn more about culture, heritage, and history of the Philippines, particularly the province of Pampanga .

Originally located in Pasay , Nayong Pilipino was moved to Clark Freeport Zone to expand the facilities of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay.  The current theme park in Clark covers an area of 3.5 hectares and features a variety of exhibits showcasing the heritage, culture, and history of the Philippines.  It has a Money Museum which features the past and present Philippine currency and a Textile Museum for local textiles as well as replicas of popular national landmarks and villages of ethnic groups.

Just a few kilometers from Nayong Pilipino is the Clark Museum and 4d Theater.  With its more modern facilities, the museum focuses on the history and culture of Pampanga.  It has different galleries showcasing geophysical artifacts, tools, historical memorabilia, and of course the present-day life of Kapampangans.  The 4D Theater plays a documentary film about the cataclysmic eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991.

7 | Visit Pradera Verde for wakeboarding experience

Pradera Verde is a recreational resort complete with relaxing villas and world-class facilities for wakeboarding and golf.  Whether you are an expert wakeboarder or hoping to learn the extreme sport, there’s always a place for you since the resort has a track for every wakeboarder level.  The resort also has a swimming pool and restaurant to make anyone’s stay more relaxing and fun.

8 | Take the kids to Dinosaurs Island

Add Dinosaurs Island to your itinerary when travelling with kids.  Located in Mabalacat, the theme park features dinosaur animatronics with motion sensors which trigger reaction with movement around them.  The park’s main attraction is the Dinosaur Trail with 26 species of dinosaurs.  The trail has a jungle vibe complete with dinosaur sounds and screams for a more realistic experience.  Other attractions include Dinosaur 7D Experience, Fossil Museum, Jurassic Safari, Wonders of the World Museum, and live dance show.

NOTE: The Giant Lantern Festival occurs annually in San Fernando City every December and Philippine Hot Air Balloon Fiesta between January and February.

EAT & DRINK

The following is your guide to the flavorful food to enjoy and restuarants to try while in Pampanga.

1 | 25 Seeds

Location: Angeles City

Located in the Dycaico Ancestral house, 25 Seeds is a farm-to-table restaurant serving Filipino fusion dishes.  The interior is a perfect mix of the old and new giving the place a homey ambience for everyone to enjoy.  Must-try dishes include Sous Vide Duck with Adobo with Pinakbet Ratatouille, Sisig Paella, Mushroom “Tom Yum” and Fried Vegetable Dumplings, and Crispy Pork Belly with Truffled Macadamia Kare-Kare.

2 | Aling Lucing Sisig

There’s no better place to eat sisig than Pampanga, particularly the restaurant of Aling Lucing, the woman who invented the dish and is now referred to as Sisig Queen.  Made from pig’s face and belly, sisig is a staple Kapampangan cuisine and is now one of the most popular dishes in the country.  Aside from the original Pork Sisig, other varieties to try include Sisig with Lechon Kawali, Bangus Sisig, Sisig with Fried Chicken, Ostrich Sisig, and Crocodile Sisig.

3 | Bale Dutung

Bale Dutung, which means House of Wood in English, is a beautiful wooden structure with a homey ambience and is surrounded by greenery.  The restaurant boasts of having three dining setups – the open kitchen, al fresco, and an air-conditioned private room that doubles as an art gallery.  The restaurant, once visited by American celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, is not open for walk-ins and only opens once reservations are made.  Must-try dishes include Adobong Pugo, Binagoongan Sisig, Hito at Balo-Balo Sushi, Lechon Tortilla, and Tibok Tibok.

4 | Binulo Restaurant

Binulo Restaurant specializes in Kapampangan cuisine and grilled U.S steaks which make it a great dining destination for local and foreign customers alike.  The restaurant is spacious and has a nice and relaxing ambience.  While the price is a bit high for local standards, the servings are generous.  That and the quality of food being served makes the restaurant worth it.  Some of their best dishes include Pangat na Ulang, Pork Bulanglang, Oxtail Kare-Kare, and Crispy Pata.

5 | Cafe Fleur

Like its sister restaurant 25 Seeds, Cafe Fleur is located in an ancestral house with modern touches which appeals to those who prefer a laid back ambience.  The restaurant specializes in Kapampangan cuisine with the goal of preserving the dying recipes for the younger generation.  Their bestsellers are Buro and Hito, Pandan Sansrival, Pinoy Caesar Salad, Salted Egg Bibingka Cheesecake, and Tamales Pampangueña.

6 | Matam-ih Authentic Kapampangan Cuisine

Matam-Ih, Aeta word for delicious, is living up to its name with its authentic Kapampangan dishes.  The restaurant has a combination of traditional Filipino and African art decors.  What makes this restaurant unique from the others is the cooperation of Aeta and Abelling tribe members employed as staff and servers.  Their best sellers are Adobong Pusit, Begukan Babi (pork sauteed in shrimp paste), Kare-kareng Iking Baka, and Sisig Babi.

7 | Piccolo Padre

One of the few Italian restaurants in Pampanga, Piccolo Padre is a fine dining restaurant serving not only Italian dishes but Western cuisine as well.  Its Venetian design and interiors make the restaurant a perfect place for romantic and elegant dinners.  Its Italian Chef Dan Giampaolo is the man behind those delectable dishes including Ahi Katsu, Piccolo Padre’s Maine Lobster Tails, and Ossobuco Alla Milanese.

8 | Susie’s Cuisine

Location: Angeles City and San Fernando

It doesn’t look much but Susie’s Cuisine is one of the most visited food establishments in Pampanga as it is also a one-stop pasalubong center where you can find a variety of Kapampangan delicacies.  What started out as a small carinderia is now a favorite gastronomic destination for its pancit luglug (a noodle dish), tibok-tibok (dessert made of carabao milk), and other Filipino dishes.

9 | The Souq

Location: San Fernando

Inspired by Souk Madinat in Dubai, The Souq has a variety of dining settings.  One area is glamorous, another is more casual and rustic, and the small garden has a cozy setup perfect for intimate events.  The restaurant initially served Arabic and international dishes and later on included Filipino dishes with a twist to cater to customers craving for Filipino flavors.

KNOWN FOR: Sisig , a Kapampangan dish made from parts of pork and usually seasoned with pepper, onions and calamansi.

Suggested Budget

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  Skysca n ner ,  momondo ,  Kayak ,  kiwi.com .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to Pampanga.  Learn what you need to know BEFORE you go!

Tips & Hacks

he following are our Top 10 Tips when visiting this destination in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Pampanga, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel or resort front desk as they are more likely to give you reliable information than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Recommended Travel Apps

Apps for smartphones and tablets can be useful both before you leave and while you’re traveling.  Most are available for iPhones and Android phones.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling in Pampanga or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

13 THINGS YOU CAN ONLY DO IN PAMPANGA

Published On - March 13, 2019

Pampanga-768x380-1

Known for being the culinary capital of the Philippines, Pampanga is mostly associated with delectable Kapampangan dishes that people would rarely correlate it with anything else but food.

However, unbeknownst to tourists (and sadly, some Filipino travelers as well) Pampanga is also known for its rich and vibrant history. It has several heritage sites and a variety of historical structures that would all allude to its historical and intriguing past and culminate into a better understanding of what the Philippines really is. A province located up north, Pampanga got its name from the word “pampang” or “pampangan” which translates to “river bank”. A rich and fertile valley in Central Luzon, this Philippine province has a lot to offer to locals and tourists alike. It should come as no surprise that the province would be somewhat of a foodie’s haven given the province’s selection of unique and delectable cuisine and food items. However, dining and food aside, Pampanga is worth the visit because it is rife with a myriad of things to do that you would hardly get bored.

In fact, you can fill a three-day travel itinerary with the activities you can do in the province. From a slew of churches, amazing festivals, and thrill-seeking activities, there is so much to do in Pampanga. So, if you are looking for a glimpse of what the life up north is like, you might just want to take a trip to the dubbed culinary capital of the Philippines—and not just to sample their food but to experience the province as a whole as well.

How To Get To Pampanga

local tour guide in pampanga

You have three options in getting to Pampanga from Manila. If you are taking your own car, the drive approximately takes an hour and a half to a couple depending on traffic. However, if you do not wish to be encumbered by driving duties, you can reach Pampanga by bus or taxi.

If you want to turn your spontaneous trip into a full-blown road trip excursion, it is best to take your car. Apart from getting there faster and easier, it also allows you to explore more places without having to pay the standard fares. If you are driving, all you need is to travel up north from Manila and drive through the R-8 route which unfortunately is the fastest route of all the available ones despite the traffic lockup. Pay the necessary toll fees and arrive in San Fernando, Pampanga.

Typically, taxi drivers would charge you more than what the standard taxi meter would reflect on your trip. This is because Pampanga is located outside Metro Manila and if they have to brave through the traffic, they might charge you more. Alternatively, you can take a Grab car going there, but the fare would more or less be the same.\

Taking the bus is much cheaper, and you have a myriad of options to choose from. Some of the buses that pass through Pampanga are Victory Liner, 5 Star Buses, etc. Bus fares would range from 150-300 pesos per passenger depending on the type of bus and your bus line of choice.

Things To Do In Pampanga

Go for an adventure in the sandbox, alviera.

local tour guide in pampanga

If you are looking to indulge your proclivity for thrill-seeking activities, then you should definitely head to The Sandbox located in Alviera, Porac. Adrenaline junkies and adventure enthusiasts will love The Sandbox as there is a myriad of activities to do and a variety of attractions to see. It takes fun seriously and will truly get your adrenaline running. The park features six attractions that are of varying degrees of thrill and excitement. Individuals who are looking for steady but active fun should try their hand at archery and maybe ATV and UTV rides. However, those who are looking for serious adventure might be more inclined to try the Adventure Tower. This attraction is a five-story structure that consists of an array of activities from wall climbing, rappelling to riding a roller coaster zip line.   One of their main attractions is the giant swing which is raised more than three stories above the ground—making it the perfect play place for kids and kids at heart. Zipline fans are not left out as there is Avatar One which has been dubbed as the first roller coaster zipline in the country. However, those who are looking for a bit of a challenge might be more partial to the Aerial Walk which is a challenging course of ropes and nets raised above the ground.   The Sandbox is located in the Municipality of Porac in Pampanga. To maximize your time and ensure that you get to try out all of the attractions, be sure to arrive early as the adventure park limits the number of people that get to use the attractions for safety reasons. Weekdays are the best days to visit as this means you can avoid long queues and throngs of people.

Go Wakeboarding At Pradera Park

local tour guide in pampanga

The wake park is located amidst a vast golf course so those who do not want to get wet can alternatively opt to try golfing.

Immerse in Kapampangan Culture in Nayong Pilipino Clark

local tour guide in pampanga

Take a crash course in Filipino History by getting up close and personal with the relics of several Philippine historical and cultural sites. Back then, people can brush up on history and immerse themselves in culture in the now-defunct Nayong Pilipino in Pasay years back. However, as the place is no longer in operation, the Nayong Pilipino in Clark reminiscent of the one in Pasay will have to do. If you wish to discover more about the Philippines’ history as well as explore its heritage, this is definitely one of the places you should include in your itinerary. Aside from showcasing what makes the Philippines truly the Philippines, the visit alone will inspire patriotic vibes from you.

Go on a Heritage Tour in Bacolor and San Fernando

One of the best things about Pampanga is the fact that cultural treasures are not confined to what you can eat. In fact, snippets of the province’s history can be glimpsed through a walking tour. Take a stroll around the cities of San Fernando, Bacolor, and Angeles, and you will find a slew of intriguing heritage churches and houses. Several of these structures date back to the Spanish times and have been wonderfully preserved over time by their private owners as well as the government. This is, so the heritage of Pampanga remains tangible and visible for the new generations of Kapampangans and Filipinos to come. With the level of care, the Kapampangans took to retaining and conserving these sites, it is evident that they hold significant value and are pivotal structures that would allude to their history.

Architectural heritages are of utmost importance to Kapampangans insomuch that even a church (San Guillermo Parish in Bacolor) that is half-buried in volcanic ashes has been preserved up to this day with priests still holding masses. Churches aside, Pampanga has several ancestral houses that line its streets. These very houses have seen several generations of families who have lived through its walls with some whose lineages date as far back to the Spanish era. Most of these houses are still in mint condition and offers an insight into what life was like back in the day.

Learn Horseback Riding in El Kabayo

local tour guide in pampanga

Individuals who have always dreamed of riding a horse can turn their dreams into reality in Pampanga’s El Kabayo. Considered as an outdoor adventure, albeit a laidback one, horseback riding is one of the unique things you can do in Pampanga. What makes the place beguiling is that it looks like a makeshift set for a Western-themed movie filmed in Hollywood. Indeed, this ranch feels just like your average old western American town that is sure to inspire that inner cowboy in you. Apart from horseback riding, the ranch offers an array activities perfect for families and groups of friends alike. Lessons are offered at the ranch for those who are wary of horseback riding or would need to brush up their skills. However, if you wish to simply relax and bask amidst the greenery, they have spaces fit for picnics and barbecues.

Take Yourself To New Heights at Angeles City Flying Club

If you have always held a certain fascination for being up in there, then Angeles City Flying Club should definitely make it to your travel itinerary. Similarly, individuals who wish to see the city from a different angle and on a higher altitude should try the Ultralight Flying experience offered by the Angeles City Flying Club. The tour consists of having you see Pampanga the way our feathered friends do all the while riding an ultralight aircraft in the company of a pilot for half an hour. If you are looking for a truly unique way to experience the province, then this is it.

Apart from taking in the breathtaking and awe-inspiring views, the experience is definitely one for the books. After all, it is not every day that you get to see the world literally below your feet, so this might be an opportunity you do not want to miss.

Relax and Enjoy the Scenery at Puning Hot Springs

local tour guide in pampanga

Go for a relaxing dip in Pampanga’s very own Puning Hot Springs where it is said that the soaking yourself in the waters of the spring is enough to release your stress. Puning Hot Springs is definitely not your typical day visiting the spring as the experience will be quite extraordinary. Apart from starting your journey with a bit of trek to get to this clandestine nirvana, it requires a 4X4 vehicle just to get to (rentable at the Sapang Bato gate in Clark Freeport). The ride itself is an adventure as the landscapes along your route will be some of the most picturesque and scenic views you will ever see and gives you a fresh perspective of the province. The site itself is divided into three sections with the third station consisting of eleven warm spring water pools where you can dip yourself into. After that, be ready to be buried in hot sand for at least 15-30 minutes—a treatment that is said to be good for your joints. To cap off your experience, guests will then be covered in mud to promote brighter and healthier skin.

Have A Fun Family Weekend at the Sky Ranch

One of the theme park’s best-known rides is perhaps the Pampanga Eye which is said to be the biggest and tallest Ferris Wheel in the entire country—a feat that definitely merits a ride from visitors.

Travel Back in Time By Visiting The San Fernando Train Station

You might have a difficult time picturing it out, but back in the day, the Philippines had operational trains and train stations. In this regard, visiting San Fernando’s very own Train Station might be a blast from the past insomuch that it might look like it came from a completely different time and in some ways, it did. Back in the day, the train station was fully functioning up to the Second World War It is said that even the Philippines’ national hero, Jose Rizal, had set foot in this train station when he visited Bacolor and San Fernando. Today, while the train station is no longer operative, it has a museum filled with memorabilia, photos, and statues to commemorate a grand time when it was once alive and busy.

A Bataan death march marker to honor the people who had lost their lives during the Japanese occupation can also be found in the train station. Considering its pivotal historical significance, San Fernando Train Station has since been declared a historical landmark by the National Historical Institute which makes it a must-see attraction whenever you are in Pampanga.

Restaurants To Visit In Pampanga

Of course, a travel guide to Pampanga would not be complete without mentioning the best eateries you should visit. This is the culinary capital of the Philippines after all.  For a more comprehensive Pampanga Food trip Guide, you can go here. However, if you wish to visit only a handful of Pampanga’s famed restaurants and eateries, here are five of the Kapampangan restaurants you ought to try while there.

Estos Kitchen + Café

Estos Kitchen + Café is a relatively new Kapampangan restaurant that opened just two years ago. However, since its arrival, it has then gone on to become one of Pampanga’s beloved eateries and go-to places to wine and dine. Some of their best offers are their selections of scrumptious pizza with unique flavors like spinach artichoke and shawarma that are sure to pique your curiosity.

Their beef tenderloin with chimichurri sauce is also said to be divine as it is served with egg yolk and umami rice finished off with just the right sprinkle of sesame seeds. Finish off your meal with the restaurants very own take of Taho ice cream and your dining experience will be complete.

25 seeds is a restaurant that found its home in an abandoned mansion built in the 1920s called the Dycaico Ancestral House. Today, the place is restored to its once-forgotten and original grandeur which makes the overall ambiance comfortable and contemporary but homey.

The brainchild of owner and chef Sau Del Rosario, 25 Seeds offers a menu inspired by the East with offerings such as Duck Mango Soba with Bok Choy and the West like South of France-style Seabass et Papillote.

Soo Hyang Restaurant

local tour guide in pampanga

Craving for a Korean meal while traveling? Worry not as Soo Hyang Restaurant has you covered. This restaurant and café fusion located in Clark serves traditional Korean dishes in a contemporary industrial ambiance. Some of their specialties include a whole roasted duck which can take 3 hours and 15 minutes to prepare, Haemul Pajeon and Japche.

Of course, a Korean meal would not be complete without the Pat Bingsoo dessert.

Wooden Table

If you are looking for traditional home cooked Filipino meals and favorites, look no further than the Wooden Table. This place offers a variety of boodle selections that would be enough to feed groups of four or more.

For individuals who wish to order ala carte meals, specialties such as crispy pata, Lechon manok, and laing are also offered.

Binulo Restaurant

While Kapampangan cuisine may not be hard to find in Pampanga, you might want to try Binulo; a restaurant lauded for its authentic Kapampangan cuisine and US grilled steaks. The word binulo is the Aeta method of cooking food in fresh bamboo—a technique that the restaurant utilizes in some of their dishes.

Some of their best dishes are the Paco Salad, Binulong Nasi, Binukadkad na Hito, and Pangat na Ulang. Be sure not to get too full though as you would not want to miss out on eating their Suman with mango ice cream for dessert.

Now that you have an idea that Pampanga is more than just a place to go for food trips and culinary ventures, you might want to check out the other places you may have missed back then. As the place is only a couple of hours away by car, it makes the perfect destination for a spur-of-the-moment road trip this summer. So, gather everyone and pack your bags and commence your summer on a high note with one of the most exciting places in Luzon.

It feels good to make someone smile in the morning.

An Aeta vendor couldn’t contain her happiness when I and a fellow travel blogger bought her kamote , a root-crop that she was selling. I remember her bright smile, then she told us that it was her “buena mano” or her very first sale that day. When she left, I continued looking at her. She went on the other side of the road where a lot more of her root-crops can be found. I saw her pulling out the money from us, and spread it lightly touching all the remaining kamote .  That made me smile.

I was loving Clark, Pampanga so far, our first day of familiarization tour sponsored by DOT Region 3. I enjoyed our morning coffee and bread, and I also liked what I was seeing – a fusion of nature and some buildings. Clark, Pampanga is a delight to explore.

After our satisfying coffee, we were off to our first stop, The Clark Museum and 4D Theater.

1. Clark Museum and 4D Theatre

Clark Pampanga

Each of us was given 4D eyeglasses when we entered the Theater. It was such an interactive experience as we watched a film about Clark, Pampanga’s history. Our chairs moved and some sprinkle of water came out at the top part of the theater as the story of Clark was presented focusing on how it all started until the Mt. Pinatubo eruption.

How the unfortunate calamity destroyed Clark, how it rebuilt itself from the ashes to a fast-rising tourist destination that it is today.

I learned a lot about the history of Clark, and I can personally relate to the Mt. Pinatubo eruption. We were living in Taguig then, far away from Mt. Pinatubo, but I remember waking up as a kid and I saw our place and our home’s roof filled with ashes. Imagine the magnitude of its destruction to the people living near the eruption?

Our tour followed by exploring the Clark’s Museum. It’s a huge collection of Clark’s history, culture, and traditions. The museum is composed of 4 galleries, each depicting important aspects of Pampanga’s heritage.

Clark Pampanga

Where is Clark, Pampanga?

Clark Pampanga

Creativity at its finest.

Gallery One is all about the geological and geographical context of Clark. Where it is located featuring the rich nature that surrounds it like mountains of Arayat and Pinatubo. The second gallery focuses on people of Pampanga and Central Luzon, their way of life and also the trade and industry that reflected their traditions and natural resources.

Clark Pampanga

Traditions.

Gallery 3 is all about the history of Clark Air Field and how it has affected the lives of its people. While the 4th gallery features Clark that has risen from the ashes, the modern and rising tourism and business destination that it is today, the Clark Freeport Zone.

Clark Pampanga

While traveling to our next destination, it was also a chance for us to know more about Clark. Our tour guide explained every detail of places that we passed through like the barn houses, historical offices, and others. She grew up in Clark, so she shared a lot of interesting stories of her childhood. I really enjoyed it.

2. Clark Sun Valley Resort and Country Club

Our next stop is Clark Sun Valley Resort and Country Club, one of the highest points in Clark, Pampanga.

It’s a premier resort and real estate development with residential areas perfect for those who want a home overlooking nature. It’s just amazing how a huge golf course was also built going up the hill. But I can say that the best part is the spectacular view of the mountains and river from the resort, an awesome way to chill.

3. Hansa Creation (Toy International Philippines)

Probably one of the most interesting spots we visited is Hansa, a company located in Clark that creates real-life looking stuffed animals handmade by Filipino workers.

This is one of the pioneering investors in Clark economic zone, and most of its products are exported abroad. One staff from the company shared that the tiger used in the movie, Life of Pi, was created by Hansa. Also, they’re the preferred suppliers by Zoos and Wild Life Parks in the world

Hansa Clark Pampanga

The company has viewing or exhibition rooms that showcase their products, real-life looking animals such as bears, snakes, dogs, penguins and a lot more. We had a chance to explore these rooms and we were all delighted with those real-life looking animals! I was particularly amazed at how they were able to create these, it takes a lot of dedication and attention to details.

4. Nayong Pilipino

Nayong Pilipino Clark Pampanga

I remember experiencing Nayong Pilipino when it was still located in Paranaque, years ago. But since it was transferred to Clark, this was my first time visiting it. Nayong Pilipino is a 45-acre theme park environment showcasing typical Filipino villages, cultures, and traditions. It is like traveling the entire country in one place. It’s like a miniature representation of anything about the Philippines and its rich culture.

The place is divided through different regions in the country like the Cordillera region, Ilocos regions, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Nayong Pilipino Clark Pampanga

We entered a theater and watched a cultural presentation. It was a delight to watch talented and young Pinoys perform our very own songs and dances. It’s a great way to spread awareness of our unique culture which admittedly is slowly declining especially among the younger generations. The street parade is also something that you shouldn’t miss when you visit Nayong Pilipino.

Entrance Fee: Adult – P 150 Senior – P 120 Children – P 100

5. Aqua Planet

Clark Pampanga

Though Aqua Planet is still not yet open to the public, we were given access to this promising water park. Watch out for their official opening and launch in 2018. It will be announced on their website and social media accounts.

6. Commercio Centrale

Clark Pampanga

We capped off our day by celebrating the launch of “Commercio Centrale” , a lifestyle weekend market at the Parade Grounds of Clark Freeport Zone.

Commercio Centrale showcases food and culture that will be more focused on Kapampangan traditions. Though we saw some commercialized food stalls there and some international cuisines, we still felt the celebrations that is uniquely Filipino. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Governor Lilia Pineda. We even had a chance to chat with them.

Clark Pampanga

Later that night, more food was served! There were also some performers.  It was a night filled with smiles and celebration. It was a nice experience and a privilege to be able to celebrate Tourism and Kapampangan culture in one awesome day.

Nayong Pilipino

“Bring Home A Friend”

The entire program was in line with the national campaign of the Department of Tourism dubbed as “Bring Home A Friend.”

It is a national campaign of DOT to make 2018 the homecoming year of Pinoys and their friends abroad. Bringing home a friend to the Philippines is not just a way to share our rich culture, it is also a chance to win exciting prizes. Yes, you read it right. Just bring home a friend from abroad, join the campaign and get a chance to win some awesome prizes!

Mechanics and ways to join can be found here, Bring Home A Friend.

It was a day filled with excitement and learning more about Clark Pampanga. All the tourist spots that we visited from the Nayong Pilipino to Comercio Centrale are meant to create an impact that will make visitors come back to Pampanga, come back to the Philippines.

4 Restaurants We Tried in Pampanga: A Food Tour Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

When TLC invited us to join them in retracing Anthony Bourdain’s steps in touring Pampanga, we were definitely psyched. We’re fans of great food and fans of Bourdain, so we started off bright and early to join TLC and SkyCable for the FoodSteps Culinary Tour in Pampanga for a day of eating and learning.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Kusinang Matua ng Atching Lilian Borromeo

Address: Brgy. Parian, Mexico, Pampanga

Lilian Borromeo is a force to be reckoned with. When we arrived she was organizing the buffet of Kapampangan breakfast dishes including tamales, meatloaf, longganisa, dinuguan, and a host of several other dishes that were homemade and served fresh. We filled ourselves with breakfast while she went around, made sure the buffet was refilled before dishes ran out, and talked to a few of us. She said she was a fan of Anthony Bourdain, but did not know exactly who he was, self-deprecatingly saying “Pag matanda ka na di mo na inaalam talaga, basta papanoorin mo kapag nandiyan” (When you’re older, you don’t really pay attention, but you watch when you see them).

San Nicolas cookies ingredients, Kusina Matua

She started her demo of baking the famous Panecillos San Nicolas and shared her experiences of making them. Charming and humble, she told us why she’s making sure the recipes of the 16th century are still in circulation, saying there are people making old things new, but that she wants to start from the root and make sure the original recipes aren’t forgotten.

Unlike most chefs, she shares all her secrets and tricks with the crowd, and lightheartedly cracked jokes often, with a demeanor that only endeared her more to everyone. We listened and asked questions, and after the demo, the line to take pictures with her was understandably long as we all wanted to remember this sweet, amazing woman who is living gracefully, and so joyfully.

Bale Dutung by Chef Claude Tayag

Address: Paul Ave, Angeles City, Pampanga

Happily filled with breakfast, we piled into our Luxe Bus again and travelled the 30 minutes to Bale Dutung, Claude Tayag’s family home. We knew we were in for a treat, as we had been told that ten courses would be served, the food that Bourdain had eaten when he had visited, plus a few more courses to complement those. Starting off with a salad, we ate leisurely through the ten courses, with Chef Claude introducing each course with the history and background of each dish. While each course had its own appeal, our table raved about the lumpiang ubod, adobong pugo and the seafood kare-kare.

Kare-kareng Laman Dagat, Bale Dutung

One woman at the other table even cried after being asked how she liked the kare-kare, saying it was the best kare-kare she’s ever had. Four hours of eating did not seem quite enough to absorb all of the information and delectable quality of each plate set before us, and we left moaning in contentment to head to our next stop.

Susie’s Cuisine

Not really a restaurant. More like a food store. Susie’s Cuisine did not leave us wanting, and sent us bags of Pampanga’s best kakanin, and until a few days later (with a ton of restraint to not eat it all in one sitting), we were still enjoying their sylvanas, and our favorite, carabao milk pastillas, perfect with a cup of coffee for merienda.

Address: 463B Miranda St, Angeles City

Café Fleur was the last stop for our Pampanga food tour, and while we thought we couldn’t fit in another bite in our bellies, the cooking demos by the three in house chefs of Tamales Pampaguena, Okoy and Sisig got us excited for the food to come.

Crispy Okoy and Shrimps by Cafe Fleur

As Chef Chloe explained, the street food served in the café are elevated concepts to not just look great, but use herbs they grow in the garden, and are made of ingredients sourced locally. With a backdrop of the old house they converted into the multi-concept restaurant, it was the perfect end to the day.

Every stop we went to, while offering different cuisine, all had the same things in common: People committed to showing the best of what Pampanga has to offer, and a passion for making things delicious. It was a delight to experience and be in the presence of people who pride themselves in their region’s cuisine and are sharing their expertise to locals and outsiders alike. The world is ready for Filipino food and where better to start but at home, tasting what our local chefs have to offer, and sharing it with the world. We left the day prouder of our heritage as Filipinos, and as eaters, to have gone through that marathon of eating and lived to tell the tasty tale.

On the Brazilian Coast, a Tropical Town Beloved by Artists and Makers

A guide to Paraty, on the Costa Verde, with tips on where to stay, shop and island hop from the artist Vik Muniz and four other insiders.

A port area with rows of boats. The sky is a light orange. In the distance are forested hills.

Roughly halfway between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the coastal town of Paraty (population 45,000) isn’t the easiest place to reach. It requires a four-hour, mostly mountainous drive from either city, a 45-minute helicopter charter or arrival by sea. It’s that relative seclusion that keeps the tourist hordes and unbridled development at bay, despite the town’s obvious appeal. Set on Brazil’s Costa Verde, with mountains covered in rainforest on one side and the emerald green waters of Ilha Grande Bay on the other, Paraty (pronounced para-CHEE by locals), preserves more than 30 blocks as its historic quarter, a grid of pedestrian-only cobblestone streets lined with whitewashed 18th- and 19th-century facades, many of them remnants of the Portuguese colonial era.

Starting in the mid-1600s, the town grew prosperous as a seaport during the country’s gold rush (many of the biggest gold mines were in the neighboring inland state Minas Gerais) — and as a hub for the slave trade. African slaves not only worked in the mines but built much of the town’s early infrastructure, such as its roads. Once the gold stopped coming through Paraty for export in the early 1700s, the town continued to harvest sugar cane and produce cachaça, the national spirit, before shifting its economic focus to the coffee trade. At the end of the 19th century, Santos, 190 miles to the south, supplanted Paraty as the country’s primary coffee-exporting port, and the town began to languish. “It fell off the map,” says Luana Assunção, the owner of the Rio-based travel company Free Walker Tours. “It became isolated and poor. Many houses were abandoned.”

By the 1970s, a new highway and an influx of urban transplants had given Paraty an infusion of new life. Lured by the area’s affordability, a number of artists, designers and other creative types began renovating the old mansions and opening a handful of galleries, boutiques, cafes and small hotels, turning the long-forgotten town into an alluring vacation destination.

“I was worried that mass tourism would endanger the future of the culture and the nature in Paraty, but it didn’t happen,” says the nature photographer Dom João de Orleans e Bragança, who has been visiting Paraty since 1968 and now lives there most of the year. He credits the strict building codes for imbuing the town with a certain timeless quality, even after the pandemic when the area’s second-home owners began spending more time in Paraty. “You’ll never see a skyscraper, and we don’t have big resorts or hotels here.”

What Paraty does have is easy access to the dozens of small islands and sandy coves across the bay (local traineiras , renovated wooden fishing boats; large schooners; and speedboats are all available for visitors to rent for daylong outings), and the countless hiking trails, waterfalls and beaches that are part of the massive Serra da Bocaina National Park. Visitors can also make day trips to a handful of villages home to Indigenous and historic Black settlements that have maintained a strong cultural identity. “There’s layer upon layer here,” said Lena Santana, a Brazilian costume and fashion designer who has been living in Paraty for the last decade. “It creates a certain kind of depth that makes people want to stay.” Here, Santana and four other locals and longtime Paraty visitors share their recommendations for where to stay, eat and explore.

The Insiders

Silvia Furmanovich , a fine-jewelry designer based between São Paulo and New York City, has been traveling to Paraty every other year for the past three decades.

The artist and photographer Vik Muniz , who lives in Rio de Janeiro and New York City, has been visiting Paraty since 1999.

Diana Radomysler is a partner and director of the interiors and design department at the São Paulo-based architecture firm Studio MK27. She travels to Paraty annually with her family.

Lena Santana , who was born in Salvador, Brazil, and moved to Paraty a decade ago after 15 years in London, owns a boutique, Atelier Napele, in the historic center, and Bus Stop Paraty, a guesthouse, 12 miles outside of town in Playa Grande.

Gisela Schmitt , originally from São Paulo, is the chef and owner of Paraty’s Gastromar restaurant and a boat-catering company.

Illustrations by Richard Pedaline

“I love to stay at Casa Turquesa , built on the ruins of an 18th-century mansion in the old town. Everything in the Turquoise Suite is white and turquoise, from the fabrics to the artwork. One room has prints from the British botanical artist Margaret Mee, who spent decades traveling to the Amazon documenting flora, which have inspired my work in the past.” (Rooms from about $520 a night.) — Silvia Furmanovich

“I always suggest that friends stay at the Pousada Literária de Paraty, a cozy hotel within a cluster of historic mansions that surround a tropical garden — they return enchanted by both the hotel and its restaurant.” (Rooms from about $350 a night.) — Diana Radomysler

“The Brazilian travel company Matueté has a selection of villas. You can rent the interior designer Linda Pinto’s house in the historic quarter close to the waterfront. It has a beautiful courtyard, so the house is flooded with natural light.” (Rentals from about $1,500 a night, with a three-night minimum.) — Gisela Schmitt

Eat and Drink

“At Banana da Terra , the chef Ana Bueno cooks contemporary Caiçara [the main Indigenous community of the area] cuisine in a charming restaurant in the historic quarter. She offers things like mango and shrimp salad and a hamburger made with crab meat. After dinner, go to Gelateria Miracolo for ice cream and try the flavor made with cupuaçu, an Amazonian fruit that’s closely related to cacao.” — S.F.

“Head to Graúna [about 12 miles north of Paraty], a beautiful valley in the Atlantic Forest, for lunch at Le Gite d’Indaiatiba . The chef is like a wizard of the forest. She makes her ravioli with taioba, an edible plant from the jungle [similar to collard greens]. Call ahead and ask them to prepare the sauna, which is next to a swimmable waterfall on the property.” — G.S.

“ Fugu Japanese Food is a new restaurant that serves fish that’s been caught fresh the same day, like sororoca [a white local fish] and prejereba [tripletail]. Don’t miss the tuna starter with locally grown shiitake mushrooms or the teishoku, a wooden box with 12 different small portions of menu items, including the day’s fresh catch. There’s also a great sake selection. For dessert, have the wasabi ice cream.” — D.R.

“Recently, one of my favorite designers from São Paulo, Flavia Aranha , opened a store in Paraty. Her pieces are timeless, produced in organic fabrics or natural fibers dyed with Brazilian plants and herbs.” — D.R.

“For handwoven baskets, go to Cestarias Regio Paraty in the historic center. They come in all sizes and are made by local communities. I love the ones made from covo, a fiber extracted from bamboo, that are used to go fishing.” — G.S.

“Visit the village of Cunha in the Paraíba Valley, where the Japanese couple Mieko and Toshiyuki Ukeseki started firing ceramics in a noborigama [a traditional Japanese wood-fired chamber kiln] in the 1970s. A small community of ceramists joined them, and you can buy their pieces at their ateliers or at the ceramics festivals that Cunha hosts throughout the year.” — L.S.

“To pick up authentic Indigenous arts and crafts, such as vases and musical instruments, go to Canoa Arte Indígena . I bought several baskets from there that now decorate my office in São Paulo.” — S.F.

“Paraty has some of the best cachaça in Brazil. My favorite brand is Cachaça Maria Izabel . [Maria Izabel] and her daughters own a sugar cane plantation in Sítio Santo Antônio, about six miles north of Paraty, where they still produce the spirit by hand. You can do a tasting at the distillery and buy bottles there, or at shops in town.” — V.M.

“The Livraria das Marés is a big-city bookstore in a small town. It’s a contemporary space designed by the architect Bel Lobo with black metal shelves and a wood-paneled floor and ceiling. There’s a delightful cafe at the back.” — D.R.

“Don’t miss Saco do Mamanguá, which is the world’s only tropical fjord. You can only get there by boat, and you’ll pass Caiçara villages along small beaches. From there, you can hike to the peak of Mamanguá’s Pão de Açúcar for dramatic views of the entire Ilha Grande Bay. Another option is to rent kayaks at one of the beaches and paddle deep into the mangroves at the very end of the fjord.” — G.S.

“ Fazenda Bananal is a great place to take children. It’s a nature preserve in the forest with a farmhouse. There are walking trails, farm animals and a restaurant called Ninho that’s absolutely incredible. Many of the ingredients come from the farm. I had the best slow-cooked pork of my life there.” — V.M.

“Visit Quilombo do Campinho [a settlement about 10 miles south of Paraty founded at the end of the 19th century by formerly enslaved people]. There’s a restaurant that serves fresh grilled fish and a shop with beautiful wooden animal sculptures, rugs made of straw, bamboo furniture and jewelry made from local tropical seeds. On the way home, stop at the village of Paraty-Mirim, where you can buy artisanal wares from the Guaraní tribe; then swim at its gorgeous beach, which is bordered by mountains and a river.” — L.S.

“One of the best ways to enjoy Paraty by sea is to book Gisela Schmitt’s Sem Pressa boat tour, which takes you to the surrounding coves and swimming spots (my favorite is Saco da Velha) while offering delicious local plates like cachaça- and beet-cured prejereba [tripletail fish], fresh oysters and mussels.” — V.M.

Practical Matters

“It’s fun to be in Paraty during one of its festivals. There’s FLIP [Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty], a large and influential literary festival [this year it will be held in October] and loads of other events throughout the town.” — L.S.

“The best time to visit is from May to August, when there’s less rain, the sky is beautiful and the sea is wonderful.” — G.S.

These interviews have been edited and condensed.

A picture caption with an earlier version of this article misstated the types of crafts that are sold at Canoa Arte Indígena; they include baskets, ceramics and beaded jewelry, not feather headdresses.

An earlier version of this article referred incorrectly to the fish served at Fugu Japanese Food. Most of the fish on the menu are caught fresh that same day, but not all of them.
