The History of Disney’s Hollywood Studios Part 3

tour junkies blog

The most unique area in Disney’s Hollywood Studios may just be the Animation Courtyard. In keeping with the general theme of the park, you could actually tour the Florida unit of Walt Disney Feature Animation in this area and see actual animators at work. I mentioned the Florida unit of Disney Animation when I wrote my article about the career of Disney animator Mark Henn, who worked there as an animation supervisor for such Disney characters as Belle, Jasmine, Simba and Mulan.

The theme park attraction that took guests into this building was The Magic of Disney Animation, an opening day walk-through attraction that lasted from 1989 to 2015 before being replaced by Star Wars Launch Bay (which I covered previously in my article about Tomorrowland). The Magic of Disney Animation began with the short film Back to Neverland starring television newscaster Walter Cronkite and comedian Robin Williams guiding guests through the process of bringing animated films to life, with Williams turning into an animated character himself at one point during the film.

tour junkies blog

After this introductory film, guests learned about animation second-hand by witnessing animators at work in the Florida unit. And another short featured Disney animators describing the joy of animation as an art form, followed by a montage finale of key scenes from classic animated Disney films. The animators would even talk to the guests about designing and animating characters and you could also learn how to draw characters yourself at the Animation Academy. Similar attractions based on this area would later appear at Disney California Adventure, Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland.

A year before Muppet*Vision 3D opened in the Streets of America, there was another Muppet-themed attraction at the Animation Courtyard known as Here Comes the Muppets featuring all the comedy, music and celebrity cameos you would expect from the Muppets, but that show only lasted until 1991 when it got replaced by another stage show called Voyage of the Little Mermaid, which, like Here Comes the Muppets, featured puppetry and music as well as special effects, and it lasted until 2020 with a new show called The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure scheduled to take its place in 2024.

tour junkies blog

The Animation Courtyard has actually been the home for a number of stage shows, not only housing shows based on the Muppets and The Little Mermaid but also Bear in the Big Blue House, Rolie Polie Olie, Stanley and other Playhouse Disney stars, with some shows being interactive experiences for their young audiences. Today this show is known as Disney Junior Play and Dance!

tour junkies blog

In 2001, the Walt Disney Presents gallery opened in the Animation Courtyard and featured memorabilia from the Disney archives while celebrating the life and legacy of Walt Disney.

tour junkies blog

Over the years, the Animation Courtyard has also featured attractions exploring the making of the current Disney films of the day, including The Making of the Haunted Mansion Movie (2003), Journey Into Narnia (2005) and The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow (2012).

tour junkies blog

In addition to Hollywood Boulevard, Grand Avenue and the Animation Courtyard, one other area that has been a part of Disney’s Hollywood Studios ever since opening day is Echo Lake, an oval-shaped lagoon where the Tomorrowland attraction Star Tours, created in collaboration with Star Wars creator George Lucas, made its Florida debut in 1989, later replaced by its sequel attraction Star Tours – The Adventure Continues in 2011, in addition to the other Star Wars-themed attraction Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple, which opened in 2007 as an updated version of the Jedi Training Academy.  But Disney also teamed up with George Lucas to create the opening day show Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular based on Raiders of the Lost Ark, directed by Back to Neverland director Jerry Rees and featuring a ton of awe-inspiring effects as well as audience participation.

Another opening day attraction at Echo Lake was the Monster Sound Show, which explored how sounds were created for films and television. Guests were even allowed to participate in the show by creating their own folly for an original horror comedy short film starring Martin Short and Chevy Chase. The show was later replaced by Sounds Dangerous!, an audio-themed show starring Drew Carey that ran from 1999 to 2012, followed by Star Wars: Path of the Jedi, a 10-minute montage of memorable moments from Star Wars movies that ran from 2015 to 2019 (mostly as a way to promote The Force Awakens ), and finally Vacation Fun, a new Mickey Mouse short released in the newly dubbed Mickey Shorts Theater in conjunction with Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway in 2020.

tour junkies blog

In 2009, Echo Lake also became home to the long-running attraction The American Idol Experience, based on the FOX reality competition show and emulating the show’s process for turning ordinary people into stars. Contestants (14 or older) must first sing in front of judges and then a studio audience.

tour junkies blog

The American Idol Experience lasted until 2014 before being replaced by For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration, a musical stage show based on the 2013 animated film Frozen.

tour junkies blog

In my next and final article about Disney’s Hollywood Studios I will write about the rest of the areas that were added to the park long after its 1989 opening day, including Sunset Boulevard and Toy Story World.

Jake paul, mike tyson announce two-city press conference tour for netflix boxing match, share this article.

(This story original published on USATODAY.com )

The hype for Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul is building, and it will lead to two press conferences months before the bout takes places.

Tyson and Paul, as well as co-main eventers in Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, will meet face-to-face to promote their upcoming match. The opponents will meet May 13 at the Apollo Theater in New York City and on May 16 at Texas Live! in Arlington, Texas. The press conferences will be free to the public and open on a first come, first serve basis, and they’ll be streamed on Most Valuable Promotions’ YouTube channel and Netflix’s YouTube and X channels.

Even though the fight isn’t scheduled to take place until July 20 at AT&T Stadium, the press conferences will come just days before tickets go on sale. Tickets will be available on May 16 at 12 p.m. ET, giving the press conferences the chance to generate more interest for what is already a highly anticipated bout. The stadium is expected to hold around 80,000 people for the event.

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson will be pro fight over eight 2-minute rounds

Jose aldo confirms ufc 301 final fight on contract, hints at boxing match at jake paul vs. mike tyson, mike tyson sounds off on 'jealous' athletes criticizing jake paul fight.

The fight between Tyson and Paul was given the status of a sanctioned pro bout scheduled for eight, two-minute rounds and the usage of 14-ounce gloves. Because it is a sanctioned pro fight, the outcome will count toward their records. Tyson is 50-6 with 44 knockouts and Paul is 9-1 with six knockouts.

Despite the decision, prominent people in the boxing world have dismissed the idea of the fight being sanctioned .

Taylor and Serrano being part of the card means one of the long-awaited rematches in boxing will take place. Their first matchup took place on April 30, 2022 in what was the first women’s boxing match to headline Madison Square Garden. The match was widely praised as one of the best ones of the year, and it ended with Taylor victorious by split-decision. The battle in July will be for the undisputed super lightweight championship.

Lisbon, Portugal

TAP Portugal has dropped the price of their Fall and Winter 2024-2025 flights from Toronto to Lisbon, Faro, and Porto, Portugal down to $568 CAD roundtrip including taxes.

Flights from Toronto to Madeira are also available for a similar price.

Flights from Toronto to Marrakesh, Morocco are available for $791 roundtrip.

Like everything in our lives, these have crept up in price over the last few years. Taking a look back at TAP's deal history on these flights to Lisbon shows...

November 2022 - $394 to $442 roundtrip

January 2023 - $399 to $426 roundtrip

April 2023 - $504 roundtrip

January 2024 - $465 roundtrip

It does seem possible that we might still see these offered in the $400s roundtrip at some point.

Although for the last 60 days they've been firmly planted in the $700s.

You can also find Business Class flights from Toronto to these same destinations in Portugal for $1999 CAD roundtrip. These have also been cheaper in the recent past, sometimes offered for around $1700 roundtrip when TAP has a large price drop.

But they are still around 45% cheaper than TAP's usual business class prices, and 55% cheaper than Air Canada's prices on the same YYZ-LIS route.

Sorry, the links to the deals for Los Angeles and Costa Rica were broken for some of you today. Try these instead...

Homemade Food Junkie

  • Spicy Baked Pepper Jelly Cheese Dip

This delicious baked pepper jelly cheese dip is an easy appetizer and a crowd pleaser! You can whip this yummy dish up in 20 minutes or less.

The baked pepper jelly dip has a cheese base with sharp cheddar cheese and blended cream cheese. Fresh green onions are added in for an extra pop of flavor. This dish bakes in 15 minutes and it topped with warmed pepper jelly.

This dip is one of my favorites to serve at a party! The warm cheese and pepper jelly are a fantastic combination. I love to serve mine with crisp white wine and crackers topped with sea salt.

Pepper Jelly Cheese Dip

What is Pepper Jelly?

Pepper jelly is a sweet and spicy jelly made primarily from peppers, typically hot peppers like jalapeños or habaneros, combined with sugar, vinegar, and pectin. It’s often used as a condiment or glaze, adding a delightful balance of heat and sweetness to dishes. Pepper jelly can vary in heat level depending on the type and amount of peppers used, making it versatile for different tastes and recipes. It’s commonly paired with cheeses, crackers, meats, and even incorporated into sauces or dips to add a zesty kick.

Can you make your own Pepper Jelly?

Yes you can! We have a great recipe for pepper jelly that we have been using for years.

The recipe is simple to follow and make!

  • Just put your peppers through a food processor
  • Boil the processed peppers with the grape juice and sugar.
  • Add the Certo and lemon juice and boil another minute.
  • Done and ready to skim and load into your hot, sterilized jars.
  • Water bath 10 minutes.

Click here for the Pepper Jelly Recipe

Ingredients For Baked Pepper Jelly Cheese Dip

Wine pairings to serve with the Baked Pepper Jelly Cheese dip

I’m always serving this dip at parties. This dip is perfect to compliment a charcuterie board or a variety of delicious wines. Here are a few wine pairing suggestions to serve with this dip:

  • Riesling : A slightly sweet Riesling can balance the heat of the pepper jelly while also enhancing the sweetness of the dish.
  • Gewürztraminer : This aromatic wine offers floral and fruity notes that can harmonize with the spiciness of the dip while providing a touch of sweetness.
  • Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gri s: A light and crisp Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris can provide a refreshing contrast to the richness of the cheese while not overwhelming the flavors of the dip.
  • Sparkling Wine/Champagne : The effervescence and acidity of sparkling wine or Champagne can cleanse the palate between bites, making it a refreshing choice to enjoy with the creamy cheese and spicy jelly.
  • Rosé : A dry or slightly off-dry rosé with fruity notes can complement the flavors of the dip while offering a refreshing and versatile pairing.
  • Zinfandel: A fruity and spicy Zinfandel can stand up to the bold flavors of the pepper jelly while also complementing the richness of the cheese.
  • Syrah/Shiraz : A medium to full-bodied Syrah or Shiraz with peppery and spicy notes can complement the heat of the pepper jelly while adding depth to the pairing.
  • Off-dry Sparkling Wine: An off-dry sparkling wine, such as a demi-sec Champagne or a sweeter Prosecco, can balance the spice of the pepper jelly while providing a refreshing contrast.

Choose a wine based on your preference for sweetness, acidity, and body, and consider offering a variety to cater to different tastes among your guests. Enjoy experimenting with different pairings to find the combination that suits your palate best!

Sullivan County Stowell Forest Tour

When I heard that Lionel Chute and Dode Gladders were going to be part of a group leading a walk, I immediately jumped on board without any idea where we were going or why.  Lionel is the Director of Sullivan County Conservation District and Dode Gladders is the Forestry Field Specialist for UNH Extension, and both have given talks to the Grantham Garden Club so I knew I was in for a treat.

Dode Gladders, Forester, UNH Extension, Lionel Chute, Director, Sullivan County Conservation, and Jeremy Turner, Managing Forester, Meadowsend Timberlands at the Sullivan County's Stowell Forest in Unity

Our group of carpoolers from Grantham met up with Lionel and Dode in the Sullivan County owned Stowell Forest in Unity, New Hampshire.  During the first bit of the walk, I didn’t like to see so many stumps and cut trees, but when as I understood the rationale behind it, I became a convert of forest management.    If Sullivan County had been interested in making a fast million, they could have hired loggers to clear cut the 98 acres of trees.  In contrast, this involved thoughtful planning by many experts who walked the land, made decisions about each area, and put the health of the forest first before cutting a single tree.  Key players in this transformation were Jeremy Turner and Laura French of the Meadowsend Consulting Company (a forest management company) who explained what was done and why as we walked through the site together.  I was struck by how passionate they are about their work.  Lionel worked closely with Jeremy and Laura during the planning and execution stages, and all are justifiably proud of what they have accomplished.   Initially we waked by a mostly cleared area where a few dozen impressive white pines stood.  The plan here was to leave the best white pines as seed trees. Each year, these pine trees will produce thousands of pine cones that will each release hundreds of seeds.  Since most of the trees in the area were removed, these seeds will have a better chance to germinate in the productive soil with the benefit of much less competition and lots of sunshine (which Laura called ‘reallocating the sun’). The successful seeds will inherit superior genes from their hardy parents. The land will not solely be populated by white pines. Other species of trees plus shrubs and plants will also take advantage of this opportunity to take root which will help maintain the diversity that is crucial to a healthy forest.   As we walked, we occasionally saw large white pine trees the had been girdled to gradually kill them. The standing dead trees will encourage birds such as pileated woodpeckers to create holes to feast on the insects they can hear beneath the bark.  The holes created by pileated woodpeckers can benefit more than 35 species of animals and birds.  In approximately 40 years, the girdled trees will fall and again help the local floral and fauna, not to mention the soil. It’s all part of the plan.

Girdled Eastern Pine Tree in a forest on a clear day

Girdled Eastern White Pine Tree

Twenty-one acres were left intact.  We bushwhacked into one of the Natural Areas to visit a specimen white pine.  We quietly stood together and admired the 150-year-old tree with many folks touching its bark—there was even some tree hugging.  The goal of the Stowell transformation project, in addition to making a healthier forest; is to encourage people to enjoy this land: to hike, bird watch, ride trail bikes and picnic.  Personally, I plan to go back and hike there often and watch what happens.

Tiny Central Coast newsroom Lookout Santa Cruz wins Pulitzer Prize

As legacy publications celebrated their Pulitzer Prize wins Monday, bottles of champagne were also uncorked at Lookout Santa Cruz, a fledgling 10-person newsroom based on the second floor of a former bank on Santa Cruz’s quiet, tree-lined Pacific Avenue.

“What a day!” said Ken Doctor, the Lookout’s chief executive and founder. “It’s incredible!”

The online news organization won the prize for its breaking news coverage of Santa Cruz County’s catastrophic January 2023 floods. The community-focused organization won out over the Los Angeles Times’ coverage of the fatal Lunar New Year shooting and the Honolulu Civil Beat ’s reporting on the Maui wildfires.

Doctor said the package submitted to the Pulitzer board included on-the-ground reporting, as well as blogs, newsletters and texts produced for readers as the storms hammered California’s Central Coast, causing landslides, levee failures and widespread destruction.

“We supplied not just news and photos and video; we supplied information, that basic information that you need in any kind of crisis,” Doctor said.

He believes it was “the full and complete commitment” of the newsroom that swayed the Pulitzer judges. The staff, he said, focused on answering such questions as where does one go for shelter, how to get food, which roads are closed and when the next storm is coming.

“We’re this machine that knows this community, our staff is part of this community, and we’re going to find that out,” he said.

Doctor started the paper less than four years ago.

A former news editor, executive and analyst, Doctor saw an opening for meaningful, well-reported, nonpolitical and unbiased reporting in his community.

He said he raised $2.4 million to get the online paper started and insisted on hiring an adequately sized and skilled staff — “enough to offer the public a trustworthy product and offer advertisers enough of an audience.”

He said Lookout Santa Cruz is now “one of the largest newsrooms per capita in the country.”

The outlet employs 10 newsroom staffers and five people on the business side.

He said they are branching out and starting a Lookout in Oregon’s Eugene/Springfield area and hope to continue expanding in similarly sized, community-oriented areas throughout the nation.

Winning the Pulitzer shows that the publication’s model works.

“The value of quality, independent, local journalism cannot be overstated,” said Zach Friend, a Santa Cruz County Supervisor and news junkie. “In an age where credible information can be hard to find, this is a reminder about how important community journalism is to helping provide context to our life’s events and meaning to issues we all care about.”

Friend noted that Santa Cruz County has a long, proud history of journalism.

“We may be a small community,” he said, “but this shows that in journalism and many other spaces, we have the talent and voice to make a real impact.”

Akuma rages into Street Fighter 6 on May 22

Akuma rages into Street Fighter 6 on May 22

Akuma will challenge foes worthy enough to face him in Fighting Ground, World Tour, and the Battle Hub.

tour junkies blog

Legend tells of a man so consumed by his pursuit of strength that his soul and body have now faded into nothingness. Though many wish he were a mere legend, Akuma will rise again in Street Fighter 6 , to challenge foes worthy enough to face him on May 22. Will you harness the power of the Satsui no Hado or succumb to it?

Akuma made his debut in Super Street Fighter II Turbo as a hidden boss and playable character. In Street Fighter 6, Akuma’s thirst for strength has taken a maddening toll. He carves figures of the hundreds of opponents he has felled and places them in the cave he resides, their silence beckoning him to fall deeper into his path of inner strife.

tour junkies blog

Nakayama-san’s comments on his design: Akuma now has a more striking presence complete with gray hair. We also used Buddha statues and animals as references for his musculature in an attempt to give the character a more memorable aesthetic.

tour junkies blog

Like the rest of the Year 1 characters, Akuma can become your Master in World Tour. Find him in a new area, Enma’s Hollow, located on the island of Gokuento, but beware the effects of the Satsui no Hado lest you become tormented by its hunger. After increasing your bond with Akuma, he’ll teach you his demonic moves, which you can then assign to your avatar to be used in your World Tour travels or in Avatar Battles in the Battle Hub.

As a man who has spent his life honing his skills, Akuma’s move set will be familiar to long-time fans, but the Satsui no Hado has unlocked new abilities. His fast walk speed and long-reaching normals allow him to control space and the flow of the fight.

tour junkies blog

Let’s start with Akuma’s iconic moves that make him a well-rounded pursuer. His infamous fireball, Gou Hadoken is back, and can be charged up so that a “red fireball” is released instead, giving Akuma more options upon hit or block. Everyone’s favorite air fireball, Zanku Hadoken, can cover Akuma’s aggressive approach. His dragon punch, Gou Shoryuken, works as an anti-air or as a combo ender. Finally, Tatsumaki Zanku-Kyaku sees Akuma spinning forward in a series of kicks that change properties based on which kick button is pressed.

tour junkies blog

Like his previous iterations, Akuma uses Ashura Senku to glide on the battlefield cloaked in shadows. Be wary of using this ability since it can be stopped mid-way by an opponent’s attacks. However, Akuma has honed this move’s vulnerabilities and can now use Oboro Throw during the approach to surprise opponents.

tour junkies blog

Adamant Flame is one of Akuma’s new moves, where he performs a forward thrust engulfed in flames. This move is useful in combos and for exploiting vulnerable opponents due to its long reach. The OD version will wall splat opponents, opening up more opportunities in the corner.

Demon Raid is the Street Fighter 6 version of Hyakkishu. As Akuma leaps into the air with this move, choose to follow up with a low kick, overhead attack, dive kick, or to end the leap early. The OD version of Demon Raid unlocks two more follow-ups: an air fireball and an air tatsu.

tour junkies blog

Akuma’s Level 1 Super Art is Messatsu Gohado, where he fires a highly concentrated ball of Satsui no Hado. Like most Level 1s, this move is invulnerable on start-up. Akuma has a second Level 1 called Tenma Gozanku where he unleashes the fireball from the air.

tour junkies blog

Empyrean’s End is Akuma’s Level 2 Super Art where he turns the Satsui no Hado into a powerful flame and ignites it within the opponent. Using this move close to the corner will result in a wall splat where Akuma can continue his pressure or damage. Empyrean’s End is also invulnerable on start-up.

tour junkies blog

Akuma’s first Level 3 Super Art is Sip of Calamity, another move that is invulnerable on start-up! He throws opponents on the ground with their face and follows up with a single devastating blow.

tour junkies blog

Finally, the move you’ve all been waiting for: Shun Goku Satsu or the “Raging Demon.” This second Level 3 Super Art can only be performed when his Vitality is low enough for a Critical Art and can be used to end combos. This time, he allows you to see what happens during the one-second worth of nightmares.

Coming with this update is a new stage, Enma’s Hollow, where Akuma resides to continue his hellbent training. Year 1 Ultimate Pass owners will receive this stage on May 22.

tour junkies blog

Akuma’s Outfit 2 is inspired by his debut look in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Speaking of outfits, Rashid, A.K.I., Ed, and Akuma will have their Outfit 3s also available for purchase when Akuma releases, and will automatically be distributed to all Year 1 Ultimate Pass owners.

One last thing before we sign off. With the Akuma update comes the major balance patch we mentioned in the past where all characters will receive changes. We’ll have more to share about this in the future as we approach May 22.

Get ready to unleash your inner demon when Akuma rages in!

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, Oogie Boogie Bash return to Disney parks in August

tour junkies blog

Halloween may not be until the fall, but at Disney theme parks , the spooky season starts in August.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is coming back to Walt Disney World and Oogie Boogie Bash – and A Disney Halloween Party will return to Disneyland Resort. The after-hours events – which are not included in regular theme park admission – will take place on select dates at Magic Kingdom and Disney California Adventure Park from August through October.

Kids and grown-ups alike can see their favorite characters dressed up, don costumes of their own and go trick-or-treating in the parks. Here’s what to expect this year:

When is Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party 2024?

The celebration will run from 7 p.m. to midnight on the following dates:

◾ Aug. 9, 13, 16, 20, 23, 27, 30

◾ Sept. 2, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 26, 27, 29

◾ Oct. 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, 24, 25, 27, 29, 31

Tickets go on sale May 15, but guests staying at select hotels can get advance access beginning on Wednesday (a full list is available on Walt Disney World’s website ).

What’s new at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party?

This year Disney Parks will introduce a new DescenDANCE Party inspired by the film “Descendants: The Rise of Red,” coming to Disney+ in July. The rave will take place at Tomorrowland's Rockettower Plaza Stage.

Mickey’s party will also feature other firsts, including a debut appearance from Bruno Madrigal. “For the first time during the party, you can meet the clairvoyant character from ‘Encanto’ alongside Mirabel at their Casita in Fairytale Garden,” Disney Parks said in a blog post .

There will also be more villain sightings, new neon spiderweb-themed looks for Mickey and Minnie and an earlier start time for Mickey’s Boo-To-You Halloween Parade – 8:15 p.m., an hour earlier than past years – allowing younger guests to attend before bedtime. There will be plenty of familiar programming, too, including Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular fireworks show, the Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular stage production and more.

Reservations for Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular Dessert Party – which offers the chance to watch fireworks from Tomorrowland Terrace or Plaza Garden – will be available on June 7.

How much does Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party cost?

Tickets range from $119 to $199 per ticket – before tax – depending on the date. Disney Vacation Club members and annual pass holders can get a $10 discount on each ticket for August and September dates.

Ticketholders can enter Magic Kingdom beginning at 4 p.m. and do not need a separate day theme park ticket or reservation.

Disney Halloween, holiday events: Are they worth it?

◾ Oct. 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 27, 29, 31
