What is LastPass?

LastPass is a password manager for nearly all operating systems and browsers. It is a competitor to 1Password , Keeper , ZOHO , etc. The idea is nowadays, with many different accounts for banking, social networks, shopping, and more - it’s impossible to create and remember secure passwords for all the different sites that we use. Instead, you could remember one long, secure password, which you give to your password manager to then “unlock” all your other passwords. All of your other passwords are completely random, very secure, and stored by your password manager. This prevents you from having to remember multiple passwords - and eventually forgetting your passwords, as well as the dangerous tactic of password reuse !

I highly recommend looking into a password manager!

Not to spoil the beans or anything… but I just bought a 2020 M1 Mac Mini ! It should greatly enhance my video production capabilities (coming from a 2014 MacBook Pro which did not have H.265 encoding/decoding via hardware acceleration). Excited to see what this M1 chip is capable of and to help give me a better idea if I should get a 2021 16” MacBook Pro with a possible M2 chip in it… possibly being released in September 2021 🤞 ( spoiler alert !!)

I’m running a fresh install of Big Sur and am trying to install various things. One that got me hung up for a bit is the Lastpass extension for Safari. Here’s how you should install it:

Installation

You can basically follow these instructions . Or, in my own words:

My issues was that I attempted to install Lastpass via the Mac App Store (it has a 2.6/5 rating for a reason). After installing it, it did not prompt me to install the Safari extension. Uninstalling it and installing the direct download from LastPass worked for me.

Creating a LastPass Account

Creating a LastPass account is the first step towards harnessing the full potential of this robust password manager and digital vault within Safari. By establishing a LastPass account, you gain access to a secure platform that simplifies password management, enhances online security, and facilitates seamless access to your digital credentials across various devices.

To begin the account creation process, open the LastPass app or extension in Safari and select the option to create a new account. You'll be prompted to provide essential details such as your email address and a strong master password. The master password serves as the key to your LastPass vault, so it's crucial to choose a password that is both secure and memorable. LastPass provides guidelines for creating a strong master password, emphasizing the importance of using a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters to bolster its strength.

Once you've entered your email address and master password, LastPass will guide you through the account setup process, which may include additional security measures such as multifactor authentication for an added layer of protection. It's advisable to enable multifactor authentication, as it significantly enhances the security of your LastPass account by requiring an additional verification step beyond the master password.

After completing the account setup, LastPass may prompt you to verify your email address to ensure the validity of the provided information. This verification step adds an extra layer of security and helps safeguard your account against unauthorized access.

Upon successful verification, your LastPass account is ready for use, and you can begin populating your digital vault with passwords, secure notes, payment card information, and other sensitive data. The digital vault serves as a secure repository for your digital credentials, allowing you to access and manage them with ease while ensuring their protection against unauthorized access.

By creating a LastPass account, you've taken a significant step towards fortifying your online security and simplifying the management of your digital identity. With your LastPass account in place, you're now poised to explore the myriad features and functionalities that LastPass offers, empowering you to navigate the digital landscape with confidence and peace of mind.

Whether you're dealing with a myriad of online accounts or striving to enhance the strength and uniqueness of your passwords, LastPass offers a comprehensive set of tools to simplify the management of your digital identity.

To add a new password to LastPass, begin by navigating to the website or online service for which you want to store the login credentials. Upon entering your username and password, LastPass recognizes the new login and prompts you to save it to your vault. By clicking "Save Site" or a similar prompt, LastPass securely stores the login details, associating them with the respective website or service for future access.

Once saved, your passwords are encrypted and stored within your LastPass vault, safeguarded by robust security measures to prevent unauthorized access. The vault serves as a centralized repository for all your digital credentials, allowing you to access and manage them with ease from any device, including Safari on your Mac or iOS device.

Managing passwords with LastPass is equally straightforward. Through the LastPass interface in Safari, you can view and organize your stored passwords, edit login details, and categorize them into custom folders for better organization. This functionality is particularly useful for individuals with numerous online accounts, as it streamlines the process of locating and managing specific credentials.

Furthermore, LastPass offers a password generator feature that enables you to create strong, unique passwords for new accounts or to replace existing weak passwords. By specifying the desired length and complexity of the password, LastPass generates a secure credential that adheres to best practices for password strength, significantly bolstering the security of your online accounts.

In addition to managing website passwords, LastPass allows you to store and secure a wide range of sensitive information, including credit card details, personal identification numbers, and secure notes. This versatility makes LastPass a comprehensive solution for safeguarding all aspects of your digital identity, ensuring that sensitive data remains protected and easily accessible when needed.

By leveraging LastPass for adding and managing passwords, you're not only simplifying the management of your digital credentials but also fortifying the security of your online accounts. With LastPass seamlessly integrated into Safari, you can navigate the digital landscape with confidence, knowing that your passwords and sensitive information are safeguarded by a robust and user-friendly platform.

In the subsequent sections, we'll explore additional features of LastPass, including its capabilities for form filling, secure password generation, and multifactor authentication, empowering you to harness the full potential of LastPass within Safari for a secure and streamlined browsing experience.

Using LastPass for Form Filling

Utilizing LastPass for form filling in Safari streamlines the process of entering personal and sensitive information across various websites and online services. Whether you're completing online shopping transactions, signing up for new accounts, or filling out digital forms, LastPass offers a convenient and secure solution for populating form fields with accuracy and efficiency.

When encountering a web form that requires personal details such as name, address, email, and other pertinent information, LastPass intelligently recognizes the form fields and offers to fill them with the relevant data stored in your LastPass vault. As you focus on each form field, LastPass presents a prompt to autofill the corresponding information. By selecting the appropriate entry from your LastPass vault, the form fields are populated instantly, allowing you to proceed with the submission or completion of the form effortlessly.

In addition to standard form filling, LastPass excels in securely managing and autofilling payment and shipping details during online transactions. By storing credit card information and shipping addresses within your LastPass vault, you can seamlessly complete checkout processes without the need to manually input sensitive financial and personal data, enhancing both convenience and security.

By harnessing LastPass for form filling in Safari, you're not only streamlining your online interactions but also safeguarding your personal information from potential security risks associated with manual data entry. With LastPass seamlessly integrated into Safari, you can navigate the digital landscape with confidence, knowing that your form filling activities are optimized for efficiency and security.

In the subsequent sections, we'll delve into additional functionalities of LastPass, including its capabilities for generating secure passwords, accessing the LastPass vault, and enabling two-factor authentication, empowering you to harness the full potential of LastPass within Safari for a secure and streamlined browsing experience.

Generating Secure Passwords

Generating secure passwords is a fundamental aspect of maintaining robust online security, and LastPass offers a powerful solution for creating and managing strong credentials within Safari. With the prevalence of cyber threats and data breaches, the importance of using unique and complex passwords cannot be overstated. LastPass addresses this critical need by providing a built-in password generator that empowers users to generate strong, randomized passwords for their online accounts.

When creating a new account or updating an existing password, LastPass's password generator feature becomes invaluable. By specifying the desired length and complexity of the password, users can tailor the generated passwords to meet the stringent security requirements of modern online platforms. The generated passwords adhere to best practices for password strength, incorporating a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters to enhance their resilience against unauthorized access.

Furthermore, LastPass ensures that the generated passwords are unique to each account, mitigating the risks associated with password reuse across multiple platforms. This proactive approach significantly reduces the likelihood of unauthorized access to other accounts in the event of a data breach or security compromise.

By seamlessly integrating the password generator into Safari, LastPass simplifies the process of creating and managing secure credentials, alleviating the burden of devising and remembering complex passwords for numerous online accounts. This not only enhances the overall security posture of users but also contributes to a more streamlined and secure digital experience.

In addition to generating new passwords, LastPass facilitates the identification and updating of weak or compromised passwords that may be stored within the user's vault. By analyzing the strength and security status of stored passwords, LastPass empowers users to proactively strengthen their online security by replacing weak or compromised credentials with robust, randomly generated passwords.

By leveraging LastPass for generating secure passwords within Safari, users can fortify their online security posture, mitigate the risks associated with password-related vulnerabilities, and navigate the digital landscape with confidence. The seamless integration of LastPass's password generator empowers users to uphold best practices for password security, ensuring that their digital identities remain safeguarded against unauthorized access and potential security threats.

In the subsequent sections, we'll explore additional features of LastPass, including its capabilities for accessing the LastPass vault and enabling two-factor authentication, further enhancing the security and convenience of using LastPass within Safari.

Accessing LastPass Vault

Accessing your LastPass vault in Safari is a seamless and secure process that empowers you to manage and retrieve your digital credentials with ease. The LastPass vault serves as a centralized repository for your passwords, secure notes, payment card information, and other sensitive data, offering a secure and convenient solution for organizing and accessing your digital identity.

To access your LastPass vault in Safari, simply click on the LastPass icon located in the browser's toolbar. This action opens the LastPass menu, where you can select the "Open My Vault" option to gain direct access to your stored credentials. Upon selecting this option, LastPass prompts you to authenticate using your master password or any enabled multifactor authentication methods, ensuring that only authorized users can access the vault.

Once authenticated, you're presented with a comprehensive view of your LastPass vault, organized into categories such as "Passwords," "Secure Notes," "Payment Cards," and more. Navigating through these categories allows you to locate and manage specific types of stored information, providing a user-friendly interface for accessing and updating your digital credentials.

The LastPass vault interface in Safari offers intuitive search functionality, enabling you to quickly locate specific entries within your vault by entering relevant keywords or phrases. This feature is particularly useful for individuals with extensive collections of stored passwords and secure notes, as it streamlines the process of retrieving specific information when needed.

Furthermore, LastPass allows users to organize their vault entries into custom folders, facilitating better categorization and management of stored credentials. By creating custom folders based on personal preferences or organizational needs, users can maintain a structured and easily navigable vault, enhancing the overall efficiency of accessing and managing their digital identity.

In addition to accessing the LastPass vault through the browser extension, users can also utilize the LastPass mobile app to access their vault on the go. The LastPass app offers seamless synchronization with the Safari browser, ensuring that any updates or additions made to the vault are reflected across all devices, providing a consistent and unified experience for managing digital credentials.

By leveraging the LastPass vault in Safari, users can confidently store, organize, and access their digital credentials, ensuring that sensitive information remains secure and easily accessible whenever needed. The seamless integration of the LastPass vault within Safari empowers users to take control of their digital identity, streamlining the management of passwords and sensitive data with a user-friendly and secure platform.

In the subsequent sections, we'll explore additional features of LastPass, including its capabilities for enabling two-factor authentication, further enhancing the security and accessibility of using LastPass within Safari.

Enabling Two-Factor Authentication

Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your LastPass account, significantly enhancing its resilience against unauthorized access. With 2FA enabled, accessing your LastPass account requires not only your master password but also a secondary form of verification, typically in the form of a unique code or prompt. This additional step ensures that even if your master password is compromised, unauthorized access to your account is thwarted by the requirement of a secondary authentication factor.

To enable two-factor authentication for your LastPass account in Safari, begin by accessing your LastPass vault and navigating to the account settings or security options. Within the security settings, locate the section dedicated to two-factor authentication and select the option to enable this feature. LastPass offers various 2FA methods, including authenticator apps, SMS-based codes, and hardware tokens, allowing users to choose the method that best aligns with their preferences and security needs.

One of the most popular 2FA methods is the use of authenticator apps, such as Google Authenticator or Authy. By selecting this method, LastPass guides you through the setup process, which involves scanning a QR code provided by LastPass using the chosen authenticator app. Once scanned, the authenticator app generates time-based, one-time codes that serve as the secondary authentication factor when accessing your LastPass account.

Alternatively, users can opt for SMS-based 2FA, where a unique code is sent to their registered mobile number for verification during login attempts. While SMS-based 2FA offers an additional layer of security, it's important to consider potential limitations, such as reliance on cellular network connectivity and the susceptibility of SMS messages to interception.

For those seeking a physical 2FA solution, LastPass supports the use of hardware tokens, such as YubiKeys, which provide a highly secure and convenient method for secondary authentication. By integrating a hardware token with your LastPass account, you can further fortify the security of your digital credentials, ensuring that access to your account is tightly controlled and protected.

Once two-factor authentication is enabled, accessing your LastPass account via Safari prompts you to provide the secondary authentication factor in addition to your master password. This seamless yet robust verification process ensures that your LastPass account remains safeguarded against unauthorized access, even in the event of a compromised master password.

By enabling two-factor authentication for your LastPass account in Safari, you're bolstering the security of your digital identity and sensitive information, mitigating the risks associated with unauthorized access and potential security breaches. The seamless integration of 2FA within LastPass empowers users to navigate the digital landscape with confidence, knowing that their account is fortified by an additional layer of protection.

In the subsequent sections, we'll continue to explore the myriad features and functionalities of LastPass, guiding you through the process of maximizing the security and convenience of using LastPass within Safari.

In conclusion, integrating LastPass into Safari opens the door to a world of enhanced security, convenience, and efficiency in managing your digital identity. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you've gained the knowledge and skills to harness the full potential of LastPass within Safari, empowering you to navigate the digital landscape with confidence and peace of mind.

With LastPass seamlessly integrated into Safari, you can streamline the management of your passwords, secure notes, payment card information, and other sensitive data, ensuring that they remain protected against unauthorized access. The robust features of LastPass, including its password generator, form filling capabilities, and multifactor authentication, equip you with the tools to fortify your online security posture and simplify your digital interactions.

Furthermore, LastPass's seamless synchronization across devices ensures that your digital vault remains accessible and up-to-date, regardless of the platform or device you're using. This unified experience enhances the convenience of managing your digital credentials, allowing you to seamlessly transition between your Mac and iOS devices without compromising security or accessibility.

By enabling two-factor authentication, you've added an extra layer of protection to your LastPass account, mitigating the risks associated with unauthorized access and potential security breaches. This proactive approach to security underscores your commitment to safeguarding your digital identity and sensitive information, ensuring that your LastPass account remains resilient against evolving cyber threats.

As you continue to explore the functionalities of LastPass within Safari, I encourage you to leverage its capabilities to their fullest, embracing the seamless integration of LastPass into your digital routine. Whether you're managing passwords, filling out online forms, or accessing your digital vault, LastPass empowers you to navigate the digital landscape with confidence, knowing that your digital identity is safeguarded by a robust and user-friendly platform.

Thank you. I had tried that. But didn't help. I moved to using an extension from an alternative app with similar functionality (NordPass). Haven't seen the problem since then. I guess the problem was with the Lastpass extension somehow.

If you're a LastPass user, have you found it's not possible to use in Safari? The extension exists in Safari Preferences but there is nothing visible in the Safari menu bar. Have I done something wrong? Thanks.

I'm a LastPass user and it is showing in the Safari menu bar on my MacBook Pro 2017 running Catalina. My Safari is version 15.0. But I don't know how to help with this issue, sorry.

I just got the new 14inch Mac Book Pro with Monterey installed. I was able to download the Lastpass desktop app but the Lastpass extension does not show up in my Safari 15 extensions in preferences. It could be Monterey or the fact that the Mac is the new M1 systems. Lastpass works fine on Chrome and Firefox. I don't know if Lastpass runs natively on M1 but the last I read, it does not. There are so many variables that I didn't bother with a support effort.

Issue with Edge andLastPass

I don’t know if this is a Microsoft Edge problem or a LastPass problem, but here’s the scenario: Beginning a few days ago, when I open Edge and go to Craigslist.org’s “FOR SALE” listings of, for example, Houston, TX and click on any item, normally a web page with the details of that particular item will appear. However now, when I click on a Craigslist FOR SALE item, only a blank page displays instead of that item’s details … even though the URL for that item’s details appears in Edge’s address bar. Please note that LastPass is not used with Craigslist, it is just displayed and available as an extension on Edge. Further, it doesn’t matter whether I am logged into LastPass or not. When the extension is displayed on Edge, Craigslist doesn’t operate properly; when the extension is removed from Edge (via manage extension settings) or if the extension is completely deleted from the computer, the issues does NOT occur.

I don’t know what updates to Windows, Edge, or LastPass occurred in the last few weeks - we were on vacation. Both computers are 2-year-old HP desktops running Windows 11, automatic updates on and 16GB of RAM. The LastPass is version 4.130.2.

Welcome to the Microsoft community.

To confirm whether the issue is with Edge itself or with Extensions, you can create a new Profile and check if any Extensions are enabled.

edge://settings/profiles

edge://extensions/

If not, visit the webpage you need to access and see if the problem still occurs.

If it does, try other browsers to see if the website itself has a problem.

Please let us know the results of these tests so that we can assist you better.

Sorry this didn't help.

Great! Thanks for your feedback.

How satisfied are you with this reply?

Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site.

Thanks for your feedback.

Per your suggestion, I created a new profile (***@outlook.com) and navigated to the site that had previously given me issues. When I selected an item it correctly redirected me to the details page of that item without any issue - great!

However, it's significant to note that in that new profile, Microsoft automatically added the LastPass and another extension (McAfee) ... neither were enabled. When I enabled LastPass and returned to site (craigslist) in encountered sporadic issues - sometime the redirect worked properly sometimes it did not.

When I disabled the LastPass extension, opened a new Edge page, and navigated to craigslist.org, the site worked correctly 100% of the time.

One last item noted: when I entered just "craigslist houston" in the address bar, nothing happens other than the bar changes to "bing.com/search?pglt=43q=craigslist+houston&... and a long list of numbers and letters" but if I enter craigslist.org, it proceeds to the site (and I then select houston). Not sure if that is even relevant, but thought I'd mention it.

So ... where does that put us in figuring out what is wrong with my 'real' Edge profile?

Thanks for your reply.

If everything is normal when the extensions are turned off, it can basically be confirmed that your extensions have caused the error

you are currently encountering. It is recommended that you contact the support staff of the extensions to report the problem.

What you mentioned in second question is the search function of Edge. Edge will judge whether what you entered is a domain name.

If it is, it will help you complete the required protocol address. If not, it will use the default search engine to search.

May I ask if there are any parts of my explanation that are unclear or if there are any ways in which I have not been able to assist you properly?

If so, could you please point them out?

Chrome extensions may slow down browsing significantly

Slow

Extensions are one of the greatest strengths of web browsers. They allow users to extend functionality, but this comes at a cost. A test of the 5000 most popular Chrome extensions showed that extensions may slow down the browsing experience significantly, with one notable exception.

The team at Debugbear analyzed the performance impact of Chrome extensions in various ways, including impact on CPU processing and website load time.

Here are the key findings:

  • Even on basic websites, some Chrome extensions added 500ms or more to the processing time.
  • 86% of tested extensions have minimal impact on simple websites.
  • 1.7% of extensions add 500ms or more to the processing of simple websites.
  • On complex websites, processing time reached 2000ms.
  • The impact may be cumulative, which means that multiple extensions may impact the experience more.
  • Popular extensions with high processing times: Honey Automatic Coupons, Klarna Pay Later, Monica - Your AI Copilot, Capital One Shopping, Popup Blocker, Dark Theme, Malwarebytes, Dark Reader, DDG Privacy Essentials.
  • One type of extension reduces website processing: content blockers.
  • Extensions may impact any browser, including other Chromium-based browsers and Firefox-based browsers.

Impact on website load time

Google Chrome Extensions

Browser extensions may slow down the website load time, especially if they are designed to run as the page starts loading instead of when the page content is displayed to the user.

  • Extensions may add up to 1000ms to the loading of simple websites.
  • Chrome extensions may also delay interactions after a website has loaded, but these are less common and the impact is less than 50ms for all but a select few extensions.

This delay is noticeable to the user, as it takes longer before website content is displayed by the browser.

Most content blockers improve the user experience

Content blockers improve the CPU processing of websites and the page download site significantly, especially on ad-heavy websites.

  • Some content blockers reduced the processing time of 50+ seconds to a few seconds.
  • Most reduced the page size from 40+ MB to less than 5 MB.
  • Most reduce memory consumption.
  • Notable extensions that performed well were: uBlock Origin, ScriptSafe, Privacy Badger, Malwarebytes.
  • The popular AdBlock Plus and AdBlock extensions performed worse, and not much better than the browser without extensions.

Reason for AdBlock Plus' weak performance is the acceptable ads program , which allows some ads to be displayed while the content blocker is active. This can be disabled, which should improve performance.

Reason for ScriptSafe doing best is that it blocks JavaScript by default.

Other findings

The researchers analyzed the storage use and impact on browser functionality as well.

  • 86.6 percent of Chrome extensions use less than 10MB of storage.
  • 2.2 percent of Chrome extensions use more than 50MB of storage.
  • 6 extensions with more than 1 million break back/forward cache: LastPass Password Manager, Avast Online Security, Avira Browser Safety, Norton Password Manager, Snap & Read, Microsoft Editor.

Closing Words

Installation of browser extensions may impact the processing and loading of websites. This has been known for some time , but still important.

Content blockers improve both metrics, as they block mostly JavaScript-heavy content from loading in first place.

Some extensions may delay the loading of websites by 1 second or more. While those are the exemption, users who run these may want to consider finding alternatives that have less of an impact.

Another useful option is to limit extensions to run on certain sites or only "on click" .

What about you? Do you run browser extensions? Do they impact the loading of websites?

Chrome extensions may slow down browsing significantly (with one notable exception)

Great, now those idiots who defend Google of killing Adblock should shut up lmao

Adblock? You mean ublock.

adblock is better for permanent blocking than ublock, I use both.

About memory/resource heavy extensions that were discussed here:

I removed LastPass and replaced it with Bitwarden. It’s better than LastPass for resources because it does not have bloat, but still it uses more resources than any of 30 other Brave extensions I use.

Installing coupons/credit card extensions is just idiotic. You will be tracked from site to site with every “convenience” extension like those. And it’s not their job to save you money. They are paid by websites/manufacturers. So expect offers upon offers. You will spend way more than you intended.

AI extensions are stupid too. If you want AI, just bookmark ChatGPT webpage or any other AI webpage. AI extension is not smarter or faster than standalone AI website.

I tried to replace Poper Blocker, but it works better than anything on advanced popups on porn websites, so I am using it just for popups. Too bad, it has a ton of payware bloat that probably loads for every page.

There was also a video on one of the top YouTube tech channels on exactly the same topic, which concentrated more on how extensions influence memory usage. It came to conclusion that if you use 5 tabs, your extensions will increase your browser’s memory usage by 10%. But when you reach 40 tabs, your extensions will increase your browser’s memory usage by 25%. Content blocker will decrease your memory usage, but they need additional time to re-render the page. So loading time saving is less prominent than it could have been.

> Interesting. Malwarebytes is useful, however

More proprietary software = handcuffs and your black box

True Operating Systems don’t require stupid closed source anti-virus, anti-etc. garbage.

It’s 2024, use Linux or BSD already. Cut the M$ cord and give them the middle finger.

MICROSOFT = CORRUPTION

I only use what I really need. I disable ones I don’t use every day and only enable them when I need it.

Until today, I don’t know why there isn’t a profile or a good extension manager. For YouTube, for example, I use two extensions, and they wouldn’t need to be loaded when I’m browsing other sites. Currently, I’m using Extensity, but it doesn’t switch profiles automatically.

I do not use extensions anymore myself. I found out that some do indeed cause issues with browser performance and memory use. If you read any troubleshooting with browsers they typically recommend first checking for any bad extensions causing the issues. Linus tech tips also did some testing on extensions and found some that cause performance issues.

I found that the filter AdGuard/uBo – Cookie Noticies was breaking some sites… In Linux. Normally use uBlock and TrafficLight with Firefox. Chrome I use for music listening (Deezer) and found great performance with Ubuntu 24.04 with a good bluetooth earphone.

Ublock/AdGuard/Easylist privacy filters also break some sites in Linux and Windows. Cookie notices filters should be allowed imho because they break a lot of sites, some of them completely.

I don’t use any Chromium browser but I guess the reasoning of the impact of extensions on a browser’s velocity remains pertinent for all browsers even if different in terms of amplitude, in terms of specific extensions. Extensions, but also userscripts, userChromeJS scripts, userstyles though perhaps to a lower level of possible impact.

Here on Firefox ~60+ extensions, of which Violentmonkey for userscripts and Stylus for userstyles. Also 22 userChromeJS scripts which are quasi indispensable in my experience.

I’ve never tested a comparison between the browse with and without extensions. Except once using the Speedometer test page (version 2.1 because version 3.0 seems less relevant to me) : [https://browserbench.org/Speedometer2.1/] and testing with the Bitwarden extension enabled and disabled, where I noticed a quite substantial impact of perhaps ~10% on the test page score.

As the article points it out, extensions with the greatest impact on page rendering are those which run on every page load. In my case te ones that do so are mainly privacy related : ‘uBlock Origin’ of course, but also ‘CleanLinks’, ‘Referer Modifier’, ‘LocalCDN’ (in this case speeds up), ‘Rediector’, ‘URLRedirector’ (these latter two working in a ping-pong relationship in some scenarios), ‘Server Status’, ‘I still don’t care about cookies’, ‘Temporary Containers’, ‘Containersise’ (these latter two working in conjunction), ‘uBlacklist’ (for filtering search engines’ results) … that’s about the main ones I guess.

I have no doubt that when an extension takes more time than it saves pages display less quickly. On the opposie some extensions will actually speed up page rendering (i.e ‘uBlock Origin’ because it prevents 3rd-party unnecessary/unhealthy connections, ‘LocalCDN’ because it includes locally libraries meant to be downloaded otherwise). It is as always this balance which impact negatively or positively the page’s rendering.

Last personal note : I run but a PC, dual-processor, 10 years of age. yet I guess that relativity once again means that testing with/without extensions should bring similar results in ratio with a modern PC.

I don’t understand, and I probably won’t ever do it, how the amazing number of 60+ extensions can live together with no problem at all between them, neither with no privacy leaking issues nor any other issues of several and/or medium importance like hidden telemetry or whatever.

@John G, – first, redundancy and incompatibility between extensions are carefully avoided . – secondly, not all extensions run on every page load, many are simple tools (such as ‘Notefox’, i.e.) which run only when called.

As I mentioned above the extensions which apply to every page load aren’t that numerous and are mainly privacy related. Also, as pointed out by other comments, besides impact on page rendering extensions which run on every page load must also and above all be considered for their possible privacy intrusion, mainly phoning home that is. Mozilla does a good job on AMO to deliver healthy extensions yet caution must always be exercised and testing imperative.

It’s not a problem of number of extensions & scripts, it’s just what they are specifically and how they manage together or not. You may have 3 inappropriate extensions which interfere negatively on browsing sessions and 60 which get along perfectly well.

Testing is always recommended IMO. Check RAM, CPU, logs when installing a new extension is imperative and, again, checking if you don’t have already another extension performing a similar task : I remember having read (not here) a user stating that he used ‘uBlock origin’ together with another content blocker, which is totally insane.

Lastly be aware of external software extensions but also plugins (i.e. antivirus stuff). We focus here on extensions but what about plugins, I have none, personally.

Thanks @Tom Hawack, now I have understood the good work you have done in your FF.

@John: That’s the advantage of Firefox over Chrome, FF addons have less performance impact than Chrome because it’s matured, 10+ years older and optimized than Chrome ecosystem whuch is rather new

Consent-O-Matic is another one to add to your list.

“Popular extensions with high processing times: Honey Automatic Coupons, Klarna Pay Later, Monica – Your AI Copilot, Capital One Shopping, Popup Blocker, Dark Theme, Malwarebytes, Dark Reader, DDG Privacy Essentials.”

Right then, so nothing of value? That’s a relief.

So, to sum things up: Chrome is slow, so install uBlock Origin and I still don’t care about cookies to speed up your browsing. After that you can install Dark Reader even if it slows things down a little bit. Still way faster than vanilla Chrome. Funny.

it says above that Malwarebytes has high processing times, but also that it performed well. anyways, i use the usual ublock/adblock/etc but recently ive disabled all the extensions that i dont use. i also maxed my mobo ram out with 128gb ddr4, i have no idea if that even helps though tbh. ever since chrome added the feature to save groups, i save my tabs in groups and store them, instead of always opening up 6 windows full of grouped tabs, now i only have 3 windows full of tabs. also i saved a lot of websites in a private discord channel instead of having them open as tabs forever.

Interesting. Malwarebytes is useful, however

Is LastPass safe? Here’s what we know about its security history

L astPass has been in the news quite a bit over the past decade. Following some data breaches and security incidents, you may be wondering if it’s now safe to use the well-known password manager — whether you’re a previous, current, or potential LastPass user.

Let’s take a look at LastPass’ current features and security measures along with the previous incidents.

What is LastPass?

LastPass is a password management application available on the web, desktop, and mobile, as well as with browser extensions. It offers multifactor authentication, biometric login, autofill, a password generator, and dark web monitoring to go along with its basic password management features.

As for security, LastPass uses AES-256 data encryption , PBKDF2 hashing with SHA-256 salting, and a zero-knowledge model. LastPass also holds several security certifications including ISO 27001, TRUSTe, SOC3, and others.

Currently, LastPass has over 33 million users and an estimated annual revenue of $143.7 million .

This all sounds terrific, right? So, what’s the problem?

LastPass security incidents

There’s a reason people are asking if LastPass is safe to use. Security breaches, along with the theft of information over the years, are certainly cause for concern. To understand more about these incidents, let’s look at a brief timeline of what occurred.

2011: Security notification

LastPass found an irregularity in its network traffic along with one to match in one of its databases. Even though it didn’t find a specific breach, LastPass asked its users to change their master passwords for fear that some of its data may have been hacked.

2015: Security breach

LastPass notified its community that it “discovered and blocked suspicious activity” on its network. The notification stated that email addresses, password reminders, server per user salts, and authentication hashes were compromised. However, it didn’t find evidence that user vault data was stolen and stated that user accounts were not accessed.

2021: Third-party trackers and master passwords

A LastPass user discovered several third-party trackers in the Android mobile app. While similar password managers also contained these types of trackers, the point was made that LastPass had the most between it, 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane.

“No sensitive personally identifiable user data or vault activity could be passed through these trackers. These trackers collect limited aggregated statistical data about how you use LastPass, which is used to help us improve and optimize the product,” said the statement provided to The Register by a LastPass representative.

Later in 2021, it was reported that LastPass users were notified via email that their master passwords were compromised and login attempts with those passwords were blocked. However, a LastPass representative stated that the company investigated these reports and “determined the activity is related to fairly common bot-related activity …”

2022: Data theft

Probably the most memorable security incident occurred when a hacker stole a copy of the LastPass customer database, along with password vaults and data including names, email and billing addresses, partial credit card numbers, and URLs. There was a mix of encrypted and unencrypted data involved.

The LastPass security incident report starts with the above August 2022 occurrence. It then with updates through the next few months, explaining its investigation into unusual activity in a shared third-party cloud storage service used to house backups along with other data.

Later in 2022, LastPass stated that data obtained in the original August incident was used to gain access to customer information, but that passwords remained encrypted.

The person or entity was able to obtain source code and technical information to later target a LastPass employee. They obtained credentials and keys in order to access and decrypt storage volumes within that cloud service. They then then copied information from a backup containing company names, usernames, email and billing addresses, phone numbers, and IP addresses.

In September 2023, a link was found between the 2022 data theft incident and more than $35 million in cryptocurrency being stolen from over 150 victims since the previous December.

Additional LastPass security measures

As mentioned earlier, LastPass uses the industry standard for encryption, PBKDF2 hashing with salting, and a zero-knowledge method for protecting your data.

It also undergoes routine audits and testing of its service and infrastructure, and provides users access to its security team for reporting possible weaknesses. LastPass also uses what’s called a Bug Bounty Program where white-hat hackers can submit bugs they find.

Should you use LastPass?

With the current security measures, a good feature set, and millions of users, it sounds reasonable to use LastPass as your go-to password manager — if you can look past the security incidents spanning over a decade.

But that’s really what it comes down to. Can you look past the incidents? Would you feel that your data is safe? How much trust are you willing to put in LastPass?

There are many companies out there with password management products that haven’t made headlines or had incidents like LastPass. And, it certainly seems like LastPass has a permanent target on its back from hackers and thieves. Hopefully, the company is taking the necessary measures to fix the problems, but right now, you’ll have to decide whether it’s worth the risk.
