Riley blake designs "joy in the journey" quilt.

Riley Blake Designs just released fabric line, "Joy in the Jo urney" by  Dani Mogstad, sends us on a fun camping adventure just by looking at the designs. They are so cheery and fun!

Hi Carol! I am in love with your quilt. Thanks so much for sharing this pattern. My mother and I have cut out all the pieces except the flower and leaves for appliqué. When I download the pattern on page 9 there is the appliqués for the center square. The ones that go on the round circle. However in the 10 pages that are downloadable, there are no appliqué patterns for the outside border of flowers and leaves. They look larger than the flowers and leaves that are in the center. Am I missing a page? Or should I just enlarge the pattern of flowers and leaves from page 9?

Sew Your Heart Out: 25 Free Quilt Patterns For Easy 3-Yard Quilts!

Here are 25 beautiful 3-yard quilt patterns you will fall in love with! These free quilt patterns (with step-by-step photo tutorials) are a great way to quickly make a quilt to share with someone you care about.

Sometimes, choosing the fabrics for a quilt can lead to hours of planning and guessing. Not with these patterns! Each one is designed for a focus fabric and two coordinating fabrics. If you have three one-yard cuts of fabric in your stash and are feeling creative, you’ll find your next project here.

Get inspired to sew a new quilt after seeing how beautiful and easy these beginner-friendly quilts are to make!

What size quilt does 3 yards make?

Most 3-yard quilts are throw quilts or lap quilts because they don’t require a lot of fabric. You can also make a darling baby quilt with 3 yards of fabric. Since this type of quilt isn’t very big, you can finish it quickly and give it as a gift or use it in your home. Because of their size, lap quilts and throw quilts like these are easy to quilt on a domestic sewing machine using straight-line or free-motion quilting. They are great for beginner quilters.

For all these simple patterns, 3 yards of fabric is enough to finish the quilt top. More fabric will be required for the backing and binding.

What You’ll Need to Make a Quilt

Three-yard quilt patterns are perfect for quilters of all skill levels. Besides 3 yards of fabric from your stash or your local quilt shop, here are some basic sewing supplies you will need:

• a sewing machine
• pins or sewing clips
• at least one acrylic ruler (6” x 24” is a good size), a rotary cutter, and cutting mat
• a walking foot will be very helpful if you want to use straight-line quilting to finish your quilt
• Optional: I love using my AccuQuilt fabric cutter

All my 3-Yard Quilt Patterns make fabric selection easy. Sometimes, I use prints from a single fabric collection, and sometimes, I mix it up! First, find a beautiful ‘focus fabric’ to start with. This should be a fabric that sings to you or that makes you think of the quilt’s intended recipient. After you have chosen your focus fabric, choose one coordinating fabric that is lighter and one coordinating fabric that is darker.

Quarter Log Cabins Quilt Pattern

As you may have guessed, the quarter log cabin quilt block is a log cabin variation. This variation moves the center square of a log cabin block to one corner. It is still pieced very much like a log cabin block.

Hello Neighbor! Three Yard Quilt

Sew a darling house quilt with just three yards of fabric! This darling throw quilt pattern is perfect to keep in your house or give to a friend. It contains 16 house blocks. Each block is 10 1/2” tall x 8” wide after sewing. The finished size of this throw quilt is approximately 46” x 59”.

Bear’s Paw Free Quilt Pattern

The Bear’s Paw quilt block dates back to the 1850s and is rumored to be a part of the Underground Railroad. It may have symbolized a trail that led to food and water. Whether or not that is true, I believe that quilt makers have quietly influenced our history and homes more than we will ever know.

Dream House Quilt

The easy Dream House Quilt Pattern uses a collage quilt block to make a 49 1/2” x 59” throw quilt pattern with 9 1/2” quilt blocks.

Carpenter’s Star Quilt Pattern

You can make a classic Carpenter’s Star Quilt with just 3 Yards of Fabric .

This particular quilt block is very popular on the internet using the name ‘Carpenter’s Star,’ but very similar blocks have been named Carpenter’s Wheel and Star of Bethlehem. I love the reference to Christmas.

Easiest 3 Yard Quilt Pattern Ever

Even though the Diamond in a Square pattern has just one block, sewing the same block with different fabrics makes secondary patterns appear. This simple patchwork quilt is perfect for beginners.

There are holly and berries applique blocks in the corners for a special and festive touch. If you don’t want a holiday quilt with holly and berries, you can leave off the applique pieces, use different applique motifs, or make 5 1/2” machine embroidered blocks for the corners of the quilt.

Splendor Quilt Pattern

The Splendor Quilt Pattern includes instructions for 2 different blocks: the Four Crowns Block and the Flower Patch Block. Both of these blocks are 9-patches so they look great together. There are a total of 12 blocks in the quilt and each block finishes at 12”.

Use a 1 Yard Panel For a 3 Yard Quilt

This Panel Quilt Pattern can be used with any size fabric panel, but 1-yard fabric panels are prevalent. That means including the borders, you’ll only need 3 yards of fabric to make the quilt!

Make Your Own Creative Variations

Even though these quilt patterns are all called ‘3-yard quilts,’ feel free to unloose your own creativity and try a new variation:

• Make a scrappy quilt using different precuts or scraps for the focus fabric. You could also try this with lighter and darker fabrics.
• I have been known to use four fat quarters instead of an un-cut 1 yard of fabric, but I can’t promise that using fat quarters will always work.

Kate colleran.

Kate Colleran is a renowned fabric and quilt pattern designer, author, Island Batik ambassador, and quilt teacher with over 20 years of experience in the quilting industry. Her quilt patterns have been featured in numerous quilt magazines, and she has online classes available on popular platforms like Craftsy and Quilting Daily. Kate has taught at local quilt shops, for guilds, and at national quilt shows, inspiring quilters across the country.

Kate's quilt patterns are known for their complete, easy-to-follow instructions with an eclectic design style that blends traditional elements with a modern twist. Her designs are both visually stunning and accessible to quilters of all skill levels. She is particularly well-known for her popular Braid and Mini Braid Templates, which offer a fun and easy way to create beautiful quilts.

In addition to her work as a designer and teacher, Kate is also a co-author of the book "Smash Your Precut Stash", which provides inspiration and guidance for using precut fabric collections in quilting projects.

Kate's creative talent has also led to exciting collaborations with Island Batik, and she released her first fabric lines with them in 2022. Her fabrics are characterized by vibrant colors, bold patterns, and playful designs that perfectly complement her quilt patterns.

Kate's ultimate goal is to help quilters make a quilt by finding the methods and techniques that work best for them. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced quilter, Kate's passion for quilting and her expertise are sure to inspire and delight.

Tammy Silvers

Tammy Silvers is an accomplished quilter, designer, and teacher with over 30 years of experience in the quilting industry. She fell in love with quilting in 1991 and has been quilting ever since. Tammy has taught at various quilt shops and online, with her popular Quick Quilted Gifts class available on Bluprint.

As a Georgia native, Tammy currently resides in Acworth with her husband, children, one grumpy dog, and her favorite fat cat. With a background in art and literature, Tammy has a keen eye for design and loves to incorporate "words" into her work, whether in the fabric itself or by adding them to the piece.

Tammy designs and self-publishes her own quilt patterns under the label Tamarinis, which are regularly featured in a variety of quilt magazines. She also works with major fabric manufacturers such as Northcott, Free Spirit, Maywood, Dear Stella, and Timeless Treasures, designing projects to showcase and promote their fabric lines.

Tammy's love for batiks led her to become an Island Batik ambassador and design fabrics for Island Batik, a perfect fit for her creative style. She even has her own thread line with Aurifil that coordinates beautifully with her current Island Batik line.

While Tammy enjoys designing, teaching and sharing her passion for quilting is where her true joy lies. She loves visiting different guilds, meeting quilters, and seeing all the creativity that makes the quilting world such a fun and exciting place!

Unleash your creativity with Fizz, a captivating quilt kit designed to bring a burst of energy to your quilting projects. Using the Tucker Trimmer, you can effortlessly craft pointed blades that add a dynamic and uplifting quality to your quilt. The unique design allows these pointed elements to bubble up and away, creating a visually striking pattern that exudes modern charm.

As an extra treat, Fizz offers a bonus project that ingeniously utilizes leftover pieces from the quick piecing process to fashion a contemporary throw. While the Tucker Trimmer is optional, it is highly recommended for this project.

Optional Sail 'n Sew Fabric Pack

Our incredible Sail 'n Sew fabric pack includes all of the fabrics and patterns for your projects and they are pre-cut so all you need to do is sit down and sew! The price of the Sail ‘n Sew fabric pack is $434.90 and it includes precut fabric for the quilt top for both projects including the borders, binding and pattern.  

If you are interested in only one of the kits, you can specify which one on the registration form when you sign up for the cruise. If you would like a Sail ‘n Sew pack, simply select both kits when you fill out the registration form and we'll have it waiting for you on the ship.

If you do not wish to purchase a Sail 'n Sew Fabric Pack, remember to pack your own fabrics. We will not have fabrics available for purchase aboard the ship. You will need to bring your fabric pre-cut and ready for class. You must also bring your pattern or book. You can purchase or download the patterns here: Paloma and Fizz

Note: View the preliminary 2025 Batik Quilting Cruise Supply List . A finalized supply list will also be sent to you 90 days prior to departure. We will not have a store onboard. Please bring all supplies you will need according to the supply list. We suggest you bring an extra project if you feel like you will finish the class projects and need extra sewing.

Stateroom Pricing is as Follows:

* Non-sewing guests will receive a $250 discount. Port charges, gratuities, taxes & fees of $480.48 are not included. Prices are per person, based on double occupancy.

There is a $350 per person deposit due at registration which will secure your price and availability.

This fee includes your cruise fare PLUS all fees to the teachers, a BERNINA sewing machine for the entire cruise, all associated class activities, and classroom support. You may purchase our precut Sail n Sew kit (supplies are limited) or you are welcome to bring your own precut fabric.

Group travel allows us to provide special touches that are not available on an individual reservation. And unfortunately, discounts from Royal Caribbean are not allowed through our group program. In order to take full benefit from everything Stitchin' Heaven offers on our cruises, you must register through Stitchin 'Heaven Travel.
