After living in Hawaii for five years (and now making multiple trips back per year), we learned a thing or two about planning the perfect vacation.

Planning a Trip to Hawaii: What to know before your trip

The short answer is: Yes, you can visit Maui in 2024 and the island is welcoming visitors.

After the devastating Lahaina fire in August of 2023, many people cancelled their trips. Travel to the area was discouraged as the community, government, and nonprofits worked to stabilize the area.

While Lahaina is a culturally significant area and was a vibrant community, travel to the town is closed for the foreseeable future as it’s being rebuilt. However, the remainder of Maui is open and welcoming visitors. The other areas of the island were not damaged by the fire in Lahaina.

2. What island should you visit?

The first and most important step in planning a trip to Hawaii is to pick the island or islands you want to visit. While the islands do share similarities, there are enough differences that it’s important to spend time deciding which island is right for you.

3. What’s the best time of year to visit Hawaii?

There is truly no bad time to visit Hawaii, but there are some factors that make certain times of the year more optimal than others. When we think of the best time to visit Hawaii (or the worst ) we like to break down when to visit based on the best weather, the best cost, and the fewest crowds.

In general, we think that the best time to visit any Hawaiian island is during the shoulder season: September/October and April/May. 

Here’s how we came to that decision:

Hawaii is located in the tropics, which means that you will have warm weather year-round. But there are definitely months of higher rainfall. And if you want to have the best chance of avoiding rain on your trip, you shouldn’t visit during those months.

The chart below breaks down the average rainfall by month for each island. Note, rain varies on different sides of each island — we are showing average rainfall for one popular visitor destination on each island.

A trip to Hawaii is expensive. And coming during a peak time, like between Christmas and New Year, can make your trip even more expensive. If you want your travel dollars to go further and get better deals on accommodations and flights, the best time to visit is during May, September, October, and November. Avoiding the crowds can mean the difference between getting on the boat tour that you’re excited about or staying on shore. Or finding parking at the beach that you want to visit.

Just like most vacation destinations, Hawaii has very clear busy periods and slower periods. The  Hawaii Tourism Authority does a great job of tracking visitor  arrivals to Hawaii and it’s clear that if you want to avoid crowds, February, April, May, September, and October are the months to visit.

That said, if you’re coming to Hawaii for something very specific, like whale watching, you’re going to be a little less flexible with your timing. Whale season runs from mid-December through mid-April, so showing up outside of those months would be a disappointment.

4. How long should your trip to Hawaii be?

Getting away for a vacation can be difficult, but you want to stay long enough to make it worth your while. Hawaii is not a quick trip, even from the west coast. Plan on a 5-hour plane ride and a few hour time difference. So heading to Hawaii for just a few days will make your trip feel rushed and exhausting.

We think that the minimum amount of time you should plan for a trip to Hawaii is one week. During that week you’ll be able to stay on one island and explore a few different areas. You can make the most of your time by using one of our step-by-step itineraries.

If you can, stay longer and see more. And if you plan to island hop , your trip needs to be much longer than one week.

5. Where should you stay? Hotel or vacation rental?

Once you know what island you’re visiting, it’s time to book your accommodations. The first big decision comes down to booking a hotel or a vacation rental.

Stay in a hotel if you’re looking for a resort experience: big pools, great service, and daily housekeeping. Book a vacation rental if you are traveling with a group, want more space, and would prefer to have a kitchen instead of eating out every meal.

6. Do you need a rental car?

To fully enjoy your vacation, you probably need to rent a car. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to rent it for the entire duration of your stay, especially if you’re staying in Waikiki.

If you’re planning a trip to Oahu and you’re staying in Waikiki, there may be days where your rental car is never used. There’s a lot to do within that 2-mile strip, and Waikiki Beach is great! You can save on expensive hotel parking fees by just renting a car on days that you want to explore the rest of the island. Rental car companies have offices in Waikiki which makes it convenient to pick up a car and take it out for the day.

There is also a car share company, Drive Hui, that is available in Waikiki.

7. How much does a trip to Hawaii cost?

Let’s be blunt: a trip to Hawaii is never cheap. There are definitely ways to save money, but it’s still an expensive destination to visit.

8. How far in advance should you book your trip to Hawaii?

The travel tip we give over and over is: for the best vacation experience, book early. Don’t get disappointed with the lack of availability of rental cars, completely sold-out tours and luaus, and no restaurant reservation availability.

To avoid disappointment, book these things early:

Rental Cars

We recommend booking a rental car when you book a flight. That way you know you have something reserved for you and you won’t be stuck with a 2 door coupe for $500/day for your family of five.

Because it’s important to book your rental car early, we always use and recommend  Discount Hawaii Car Rental . They almost always have the best prices (seriously we’ve saved thousands with them), they book with national carriers, and you don’t have to pre-pay your reservation. So you’re welcome to check prices as often as possible and if you find that prices have dropped, you can cancel your reservation and just make a new one.

Right now we’re seeing some seriously low plane fares from the mainland to Hawaii so people are snatching up seats before looking at the rest of their trip. While plane tickets are cheap lodging is absolutely not. You may be able to find some deals here and there, but we recommend looking at (or even better, booking!) lodging when you book that flight.

Tours and activities

If there is a specific tour or activity that you know you want to do, consider booking it a few months in advance. Luaus and popular tours book up very early, especially during the busier months.

There are a number of natural landmarks in Hawaii that require a ticketed entry. The state is trying to protect the natural resources and land by making sure that each spot doesn’t have too many visitors at one time. But with some advanced planning, you can secure your ticketed entry to some of these beautiful locations.

Restaurants

If you are hoping to hit up the most popular restaurants in Hawaii, planning ahead is crucial. But how far in advance they accept reservations varies. For example, Mama’s Fish House on Maui accepts reservations 6 months in advance. But Merriman’s on Maui only accepts reservations 30 days in advance. Here are our favorite Wailea and Kihei restaurants , if you plan to go to Maui.

9. how many islands should you visit on your trip to hawaii.

You’re making a big trip to Hawaii and you want to see as much as possible, but do you have enough time to visit more than one island?  We recommend that if you’re taking a one week trip, you stick to one island . There is a lot to see on each island and you could stay as busy as you’d like to for more than a week, easily. If your trip is 10+ days, you could add on a second island to visit, but know that you will be moving around a bit more and you probably won’t get to see everything on each island that you were hoping to see.

While the islands in Hawaii are close together and just a quick 30-45 minute flight, your island hopping travel day will still cut into your vacation. Between packing up, the airport process, and checking into accommodations on your new island, this can easily take up half a day of your vacation.

While you’re in Hawaii:

Once you’ve landed in Hawaii, congratulations! Soak up that sunshine and start living that epic vacation life. Here are some important details to know now that you’re on island time.

10. Understand the geography  

Geography on the islands is important because it will affect the weather you experience and what you do while on vacation. One big thing to understand about geography is that each island has a windward and a leeward side.

The windward side of each island faces the tradewinds. Here you’ll get more rain and wind, but you’ll also get lush landscapes (thanks to all of that rain!). The leeward side of each island is more protected from the wind and rain and you will have drier, sunnier weather. Most of the famously beautiful beaches you plan on visiting are located on the leeward side of the island.

For example, on Maui, the leeward side of the island includes some great beaches, like Wailea Beach and Ka’anapali Beach. The windward side of the island is home to the Road to Hana and a lot of beautiful waterfalls.

When you understand the island’s geography, you can better prepare for what to expect. If you’re looking for a lush, jungle experience, with waterfalls and greenery head east to the windward side. If you’re looking to beat the rain and get some sun, the west or leeward side is your best bet.

11. Eat local

One of the treats about visiting a new place is the opportunity to try new, local foods that you might not eat back home. Eating local is one of nine ways to have an authentic Hawaiian experience .

There are a few things you should consider trying while you’re here:

• Fresh, locally caught fish:  If you’re a seafood fan, don’t miss out on the fresh fish. You can enjoy it at either a restaurant or from a fish market. You’ll see options like Mahi Mahi, Ono, Opah, Ahi, and more.
• Locally grown produce:  Enjoy dragon fruit, coconut, lilikoi, pineapples, locally produced honey and more. We love doing farm tours, but if that’s not part of your vacation itinerary, try a farm-to-table restaurant. You’ll get to sample some island flavors while supporting the agriculture industry here.
• Traditional Hawaiian food:  You don’t need to go to a luau to sample some traditional Hawaiian dishes. Look for dishes like poi (taro that has been pounded into a paste), laulau (meat wrapped and cooked in taro leaves), kalua pig (slow-roasted pork cooked in an underground oven), and poke (diced, raw fish that is wonderfully flavored).
• Shave ice:  Not shaved ice. You may think that this is like a snowcone, but it couldn’t be further from it. Soft fluffy ice shavings that are flavored with different syrups and creative flavor combinations. You might also have the add-on of fruit and ice cream. 12. See the can’t-miss sights

The beaches in Hawaii are incredible. But there’s a lot more to explore on each of the islands. And, some of these can’t-miss activities can only be done in Hawaii .

Some things you might want to add to your list include:

• Night snorkeling or diving with Manta Rays on the Big Island
• Seeing the sunrise or sunset from Haleakala Crater on Maui
• Watching the big wave surfers on the north shore of Oahu
• Viewing the stunning cliffs of the NaPali coast on Kauai
• Hanging out with humpback whales during their annual migration to Hawaii
• Hiking an  active volcano  in  Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

13. Bring the right (reef-safe) sunscreen

Before you throw your favorite brand of sunscreen into your bag, stop. Hawaii has rules in place to help protect the reef and sea life that are so important. One of those rules is around the type of sunscreen you can use — you can only use reef-safe sunscreen in Hawaii. Sunscreens containing chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate are no longer sold in Hawaii. These chemicals have been found to contribute to coral reef bleaching.

14. Snorkel to see amazing sea-life

Living here, we love spending our days in the ocean. There is nothing like diving into the warm, tropical waters and being greeted by colorful fish, turtles, octopi, and more. But if it’s your first time snorkeling in Hawaii, there are some essential details you should know.

Understand safety risks

Snorkeling may look easy, but water conditions, physical conditions, and more come into play. It’s not always as safe as it looks —  drowning is the number one cause of visitor death in Hawaii . Before you go out,  review the safety tips  to make sure you’re doing what you can to keep yourself safe and learn about ROPE , a condition that can be life threatening.

Use good gear

Hear me out on this one. You’ll find a number of blogs telling you to pick up a cheap set of fins and a mask from an ABC store or Target once you arrive. There are a few reasons we don’t suggest that.

First, safety. Well fitting gear (fins that stay on and a mask that doesn’t leak) is important to keep you safe.

Second, it’s a significantly more enjoyable experience to snorkel in gear that fits well and is easy to use. This was apparent when we were trying to teach our preschooler to snorkel. The cheap gear didn’t cut it but once we got him in a good mask, he was off!

Third, buying cheap gear just adds to the already full landfill here.

That’s not to say you need to shell out and buy expensive gear. If you plan to snorkel many times, even after this trip to Hawaii, it’s worth it to buy good snorkeling gear. We have  sets listed on our recommendations page .

Otherwise, renting snorkeling gear is a great option. The shop staff can help you find gear that is the right fit for you. And if you find that it doesn’t work right, pop in and switch it out for a different rental set.

Go to the best places

All snorkeling spots are not created equal. Some spots on the island naturally have a more vibrant reef and are home to more fish and sea life. Other spots may be more affected by ocean swells at various times of the year.

Take a snorkeling tour

While we love snorkeling from the beach and we do it often, going on a snorkeling tour is a really special experience. On a good snorkeling tour, you’ll learn about the ocean, the sea life, and be taken to some cool spots that aren’t easily accessible from the beach. Plus, you’ll be able to see the islands from the water, giving you a different perspective and appreciation for their beauty.

• Molokini Sunrise Snorkel with Kai Kanani : beat the crowds to Molokini with this special sunrise snorkeling tour leaving directly from the beach in Makena/Wailea.
• Beach loading snorkeling trip from Ka’anapali : if you’re staying in Ka’anapali, you can’t get more convenient than this tour!
• Na Pali Coast Snorkeling with Holo Holo Charters : Cruise up the coast of Kaua’i and off the island of Niihau for a full day of snorkeling.
• Power Raft snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay with Captain Zodiac : Head to Kealakekua Bay and the Captain Cook monument for the best snorkeling on the island.

Understand the rules protecting sea life

When you’re snorkeling and enjoying the crystal clear water, it’s important to keep in mind that you want to make as little impact on the sea life as possible. Stay at least 10 feet away from turtles while snorkeling. You’re required to stay at least 50 feet away from Monk Seals. And if you see spinner dolphins, you’ll need to give them 50 yards of space.

15. Learn about the culture of the islands

Hawaii is a unique US state for many reasons but one thing that is important to understand is that Hawaii had a long and rich history before becoming part of the US. Learning a little about the culture and the history will enhance your stay and give you a new appreciation for these amazing islands.

There are plenty of ways to learn more about Hawai’i while you’re here. Consider visiting museums. On Oahu, we love visiting the Bishop Museum and Iolani Palace. And make sure to brush up on some simple Hawaiian words like “mahalo” (thank you).

You can also visit heritage sites like Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park on the Big Island. You can  find a list of heritage sites to visit on the Hawaii Tourism Authority website .

The Ultimate Guide to Hawaii's 2023 Summer Festivals & Activities

Looking for some summer fun in the sun? Are you dreaming of a picture-perfect tropical beach and Instagrammable crystal-clear waters? Ready your sunscreens because we got excellent vacay ideas for you and your family’s 2023 summer getaway in Hawaii!

From June 21st to September 22nd, 2023, Hawaii will officially kick off its summer season. While Hawaii's natural beauty and stunning waves are enjoyable year-round, these months are the perfect time to indulge in an array of exciting activities across the state.

Now let's dive into details...

Let's start with the Aloha Festivals . It's a statewide celebration of Hawaiian culture and traditions. The festival is held in September and features events such as street parties, parades, and live music performances. The highlight of this festival is the Floral Parade, where colorful floats and marching bands fill the streets of Waikiki on Oahu.

Obon is a traditional Japanese festival that is celebrated in Hawaii with dance, music, and food. The festival usually takes place in July and is a time to remember and honor ancestors who have passed away. During the festival, you can witness beautiful dance performances, enjoy delicious Japanese food, and experience the vibrant culture of Hawaii.

Kauai Summer Activities

The Kōloa Plantation Days Celebration is an annual event that celebrates the history and culture of Kauai's sugar plantation era. The festival features a variety of events, including a parade, live music, food booths, and cultural demonstrations. The festival will take place from the 21st to the 30th day of July.

The Battle of The Food Trucks is also an annual event on Kauai that brings together some of the best food trucks on the island to compete for the title of the best food truck. The festival also includes live music and entertainment for all ages. This year, it will be celebrated on the afternoon of Sunday, September 10th.

Mokihana Festival is a week-long celebration of Hawaiian music, dance, and culture. The festival features workshops, concerts, hula competitions, and other events that highlight the rich traditions of Hawaii. The festival usually takes place in September.

Oahu Summer Activities

The summer fun run and festival happening on June 24 of Mana Honua is an annual event held at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu. The festival includes a 5K fun run, live music, food booths, and other activities for all ages.

The international paddleboard race in the Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard World Championships will occur on July 30, 2023, between the islands of Molokai and Oahu. The event attracts athletes from all over the world who compete in different categories, including solo and team races.

Duke's OceanFest is a week-long celebration of the life and legacy of Duke Kahanamoku, the father of modern surfing. The festival includes a variety of events, including surfing competitions, ocean swims, beach volleyball, and other water sports. This festival will fall between August 19th and 27th of 2023.

The Korean Festival in Hawaii is an annual event that celebrates Korean culture and traditions. The festival features food, music, dance, and other cultural activities. The festival usually takes place in August.

Looking for a unique party experience? The Surfjack Hotel in Waikiki is hosting a Silent Disco on July 15, 2023. Participants wear wireless headphones and dance to music that only they can hear, creating a silent dance party. It's a fun and quirky way to experience the nightlife in Waikiki.

But if you're a fan of Japanese culture, you won't want to miss the Okinawan Festival Hawaii , which is scheduled to take place during the first week of September. This annual festival celebrates the vibrant culture of Okinawa, with traditional music, dance performances, and food.

Molokai Summer Activities

For the water enthusiasts out there, the Molokai Holokai Ho'olaule'a is a must-attend event. This two-day festival, taking place on July 14-15, 2023, is a celebration of Molokai's rich ocean culture. The festival features a variety of water-based activities, such as stand-up paddleboarding and outrigger canoeing, along with live music and local food vendors.

Maui Summer Activities

Art lovers won't want to miss the Maui Youth Art Exhibition 2023 , which will showcase the talents of Maui's young artists. This event, running from July 28 to August 25, 2023, will feature a variety of artwork in different mediums, such as painting, sculpture, and photography. The exhibition is a great opportunity to support and appreciate the creative talents of Maui's youth.

Hula is an integral part of Hawaiian culture, and the Emma Farden Sharpe Hula Festival is a great opportunity to witness this beautiful art form in action. Big Island Summer Activities

The Big Island Experience Volcano Festival is a celebration of the island's volcanic history and geology. This two-day festival, taking place on July 29-30, 2023, will feature guided tours of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, talks on volcanic science, and cultural demonstrations. There will also be food vendors and live music to enjoy.

And lastly, the fans of SpongeBob SquarePants won't want to miss the Bikini Bottom Day Cruise , taking place on June 24, 2023. This themed boat tour will take you to different locations that inspired the beloved cartoon show. You'll get to see the real-life equivalents of Bikini Bottom's iconic locations, like Goo Lagoon and Jellyfish Fields, and enjoy games and activities inspired by the show. But this activity is strictly for adults aged 21 and above, so you might want to skip this one if you are on a family trip with youngsters, (or if you are young at heart).

Hawaii is an enchanting destination that is a perfect vacation spot for your summer this 2023. The best time to visit Hawaii for good weather, smaller crowds, deals and more

So you want to visit Hawaii? Understandable — it's a great place.

However, unless you're booking a spontaneous flight deal (and those do happen), you'll probably want to plan to ensure you're traveling at the best time for your particular dream trip.

Whether you're looking for dry, idyllic weather, perfect whale watching season, or the cheapest time to book a Hawaiian hotel room, consider this your definitive guide to planning a perfect trip to Hawaii.

The best time to visit Hawaii for good weather

Generally, the best weather in Hawaii is in June, July and September. This is when travelers can expect the least amount of rain along with warmer water temperatures.

However, Hawaii isn't a true four seasons state and it has pretty great weather year-round. So if traveling during June, July or September isn't in the cards, you're still probably fine as there's really no bad time to go. I just got back from a trip in mid-November and the weather was great. It was warm enough to swim in the ocean without being too hot lying in the sun.

Hawaii has a tropical climate, with temperatures generally staying between 83 and 88 degrees all year long.

You should check local weather, though, as conditions in some parts of the Islands are wetter than others depending on if you are staying on the windward or leeward sides of each island.

Kauai, for instance, gets a lot of rain on the northern side of the island compared to the southern side (which does lead to some pretty great rainbows). Even if the forecast calls for rain, however, the rain tends to come in short bursts and doesn't last long.

Best time to visit Hawaii to avoid crowds

The peak tourism season in Hawaii typically starts in the middle of December and continues until the end of March or mid-April, depending on the timing of spring break for major parts of the U.S.

The less busy season stretches from the middle of April until mid-June, when most schools are out of the summer and then resumes from September until crowds tick up before the holidays. Shoulder season is a great time to visit. The huge crowds are gone, prices are lower and you can have more of the beach to yourself. Even in busy spots like Honolulu, you'll have more breathing room after Labor Day and before Thanksgiving.

July and August, while not considered Hawaii's busiest season, still tend to draw decent crowds — and are especially popular with vacationing families.

Cheapest months to visit Hawaii

Traveling to Hawaii is usually priciest during peak season, so if you want to save, wait until the off-peak or shoulder seasons.

The shoulder seasons in Hawaii run from late March through the beginning of May, and from September until Thanksgiving. However, spring break and the beginning of September can yield high traffic and higher prices, too, so look carefully before booking.

Historical data from the travel booking site Skyscanner shows airfare is at its most expensive during the winter, specifically in January. At this time of year, average long-haul flight prices can exceed $1,400.

However, prices can plummet during the shoulder seasons or times that cushion peak periods, such as late November and early March. This past September, we saw a fare war develop with prices as low as $62 one-way to Hawaii. This is especially true if you are coming from the western half of the U.S. Keep an eye on TPG deal alerts , where we regularly cover sales to Hawaii.

We looked at historical data, and generally, the most expensive month for a room in Honolulu is January, with the least expensive month being April. Analysts tell TPG it's best to book as early as possible for the best rates in the off-season. We're told that many tourists are booking as close in as a week before arrival, and the best deals will be had as far out as possible. It pays to plan ahead.

Of course, you may have more flexibility when you cash in your points and miles — though hotel award rates tend to shift with peak and off-peak seasons, too. Also, award flight availability is often directly tied to demand.

Best time to travel to Hawaii to surf

Only four of the islands in the Hawaiian archipelago are suitable for surfing year-round: Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. As for when and where you'd like to surf, well, that depends entirely on your skill level.

The waves follow a somewhat consistent schedule. In the winter, for example, surfers can find serious swells off an island's north coast, while the south coast experiences calmer seas. During the summer, the opposite is true.

So, for advanced surfers, the winter season, or ho'oilo, which runs from mid-November to early February, is when you should look out for big wave surfing competitions on the North Shore of Oahu, also known as the "Seven Mile Miracle."

On the Big Island, surf enthusiasts should check out La'aloa Bay and Honoli'i Beach Park.

For novice surfers, you'll want to spend more time on the island's southern coasts in the winter. In Maui, beaches in Kaanapali, Lahaina and Kihei deliver just-right waves for beginners to get their feet wet.

Best time for whale watching in Hawaii

The best time to go whale watching

Whales migrate to Hawaii in pods of roughly 1,000 between late December and early April, making Maui and the Kohala Coast of the Big Island two of the best places on Earth to spot the giants. Note that sometimes whales show up as early as November, so you could get lucky if you travel during shoulder season.

The best time to see turtles

If you're interested in spotting Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), they're plentiful year-round in Maui, on the Big Island of Hawaii, Kaui and on Oahu. One of the most famous spots for turtle-spotting is on Ho'okipa Beach in Maui.

Visit in the summer, during nesting season, to increase your odds. You'll even find sea turtles on some hotel grounds. I was able to get up close and personal with turtles on a trip to the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island. At that hotel, they hang out in the hotel's lagoon.

Many vendors sell turtle snorkeling adventures and I've had great luck with two separate snorkeling trips in Hawaii.

A warning, though: please don't get too close. People are asked to give the turtles at least ten feet of space and never touch them. Human touch can spread bacteria to turtles, which can lead to starvation for the creature. Remember that green sea turtles are listed as an endangered species.

Hawaii has five of the seven species of sea turtles in the world, but green sea turtles are the most common.

When to visit Hawaii for events

Summer events.

In the summer, on the third weekend of July, visitors can attend the Prince Lot Hula Festival, Hawaii's largest non-competitive hula event.

Fall events

The Hawaii Food & Wine Festival is a major draw for foodies, featuring an extensive lineup of dinners, parties, cooking classes and more taking place in October and November of 2024 on three different islands – Hawaii, Maui and Oahu.

In September, travelers can attend the Aloha Festivals in Waikiki, which feature arts and crafts, food and performance stages. Don't forget the floral parade.

Winter events

This is prime season for surfing competitions, including the Vans Triple Crown of surfing on the North Shore of Oahu.

Spring events

Heading to Hawaii in the springtime? Consider the Honolulu Festival in March or the Lantern Floating Festival, held on Memorial Day yearly in Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu.

Worst time to visit Hawaii?

This is kind of a trick question, as there is really no bad time to visit Hawaii. You'll find warm weather and sunshine most of the year. Even when it does rain, it is often just for a few minutes.

What is Summer in Hawaii Like? 

Visiting Hawaii during the summer has lots of perks, like the 4th of July fireworks, the hot sunny days, and almost no rainfall. Here is exactly what summer in Hawaii is like for each of the islands! 

Hawaii in June 

Maui in June is a sight to see. The water is bright blue, and the sun will be shining on you all day long. The Maui weather in June is usually in the high 70s, and you won’t see much rainfall at all, if any!

Visiting Oahu in June ,  you will see plenty of blue skies and sunshine. Temperatures are usually around 83 degrees during the day and 70 degrees at night. Oahu, during the month of June, is simply beautiful. 

Hawaii’s weather in June on the  Big Island  is nice and hot, with temperatures averaging about 85 degrees. During the night, you can expect lows of around 72 degrees. If it does rain, it usually will in the evening or during the night, but even then, it doesn’t rain too much. It might be cloudy during June, but it will still be nice and warm. 

Kauai in June is usually around 75 degrees on average during the day and can get around 60 degrees at night. Because it is Kauai, you might want to expect to see some rain showers here and there, but they won’t last more than a few minutes at a time. 

Hawaii in July 

If you plan to visit  Maui in July , expect to see the average high temperature of 77 degrees during the day and 60 degrees at night. Make sure to wear your sunscreen whenever you go outside because it will be hot and sunny all day long! 

During an Oahu summer , you will see temperatures in the mid-80s and very little rain. It is a great time to enjoy everything Oahu has to offer outdoors. From swimming in the ocean to relaxing on the sand, July is the perfect weather for a beach day! 

The  Big Island  will be bright and sunny in July, with average temperatures in the mid-80s. You can enjoy a nice beach day and get a good tan as there will be fewer clouds and nonstop sunshine this month. 

In  Kauai , July is nice and sunny, with a mix of rain here and there. It is the perfect time to lay on the sunny beaches, soaking up all the sunshine you can. Because July is a busier month, the beaches might be more crowded, so look for less-known beaches to get away from all the other tourists. 

Hawaii in August

Visiting  Maui in August is the best time to visit during the summer if you like it nice and hot. The average temperature is 78 degrees during the day and 61 degrees at night. You won’t have to worry about it raining unless there is a tropical storm. 

During the month of August on Oahu , expect temperatures around 85 degrees during the day and in the 70s at night. You will definitely feel the heat during this month with the cloudless sky and high humidity, so be sure to drink plenty of water each day of your trip. 

In August on the  Big Island , temperatures can get as high as 88 degrees and will feel very hot. With the heat and humidity, make sure to stay hydrated all day long and keep applying sunscreen. It is also peak tourist season, so if you do not like crowded places, this might not be the best time to visit.

The hottest month in  Kauai  is in August. You will usually see temperatures in the high 70s to low 80s and plenty of sunshine. While it might still rain, it does not last very long and might even feel nice with all the heat!

4th of July Celebrations

Spending the 4th of July in Hawaii will not disappoint. You will see hundreds of fireworks all over every island on this July weekend.

You will find a huge firework display at Ala Moana Beach Park on Oahu and in Lahaina Town if you visit Maui.  Kauai puts on an incredible Concert in the Sky firework display, and on the Big Island, you will see plenty of fireworks and a fun 4th of July parade in Kailua-Kona.

Go Snorkeling

The summertime is the perfect time to go snorkeling! The oceans are usually calmer, meaning you will see plenty of exotic fish and marine life.

What to Pack for a Summer Vacation to Hawaii

Packing for a summer vacation to Hawaii is pretty much no different than any other time of the year. Because it is not Hawaii’s rainy season, you probably won’t need to pack a raincoat this time around.

The best summer month to visit Hawaii all depends on what you want for your vacation. If you want the hottest summer days, July or August usually has warmer weather and nonstop sunshine. If you want lower prices, June or August are typically the cheaper summer months to visit.

Best time to visit Hawaii in 2023

It’s always a good time to travel to Hawaii. Even when winter brings slightly wetter and chillier weather, it never gets cold or wet. The average temperature never drops below a comfortable 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius), making Hawaii a year-round destination. In 2023, you can expect business as usual in Hawaii. Large crowds will find their way back to the island during peak season.

Although there is a rainy season (November to March) and a dry season (April to October), the rain is never there to annoy you for days. Showers can be intense but never last long enough to ruin your day, let alone your vacation. In Hawaii, it often rains on one side of the island you are on while it is scorched on the other side. 

Hawaii Travel seasons in 2023

Rain is not an issue during Hawaii’s hot summers. When the summer starts, the rain clouds will disappear as infrequent rainfall makes way for scorching and humid weather. This is especially the case in Honolulu and Waikiki, where it can become so warm that some of us would even find it uncomfortable. Although tropical cyclones can occur outside the typical season, the hurricane season starts in early June and ends in late November.

At Avoid-Crowds.com, we don’t look at the weather (too much). We look at crowds of tourists. In Hawaii, that means looking at primarily American domestic tourism and some international arrivals. Following the ‘traditional American travel pattern,’ Hawaii gets busy during two distinctive peak seasons. The first big wave of tourists hits the islands during the summer vacation break that starts half June and ends in early September after Labor Day.

What to pack for Hawaii

Like most tropical destinations on the American continent, the December holiday season is the second peak. Although short, this second peak is much more intense. In late December you can expect fully booked hotels and surging prices. Good to know there is another peak: tourism in Hawaii also picks up in March.

Best time to visit Hawaii for small crowds

If you want to avoid crowds, we recommend traveling during one of Hawaii’s two-shoulder seasons. The pre-season starts in April and ends halfway through June when peak season starts. The late season begins immediately after labor day weekend. September and October bring delightful weather, but you risk having a tropical cyclone ruining your paradise getaway-style vacation.

Hawaii gets the most expensive around public holidays like Independence Day, Christmas, or Labor Day. The lowest prices can be found in slow months like February or November. We always recommend booking early!

Pick your month

January can be wet in hawaii.

Due to its all-year-round warm weather, Hawaii is a destination for any month. Although January is the coldest month of the year in Hawaii, the average maximum temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius) is still very comfortable. With more rain than most other months, it can get wet in the first month of the year. Luckily, most flowers like damp weather and will await you fully blossoming. If you are preparing for rain and hope for Sun, January is the perfect month to visit Hawaii. 

Even in winter, Hawaii has a very pleasant climate. Best thing about traveling in January? No crowds!

Please note that not every island is the same. Check climate data before you start your vacation, or even check it before planning. If you are worried about rain, stay on the leeward side of the islands. Although it can still be a bit busy early on in the month, January is one of the quietest months in Hawaii. After the December holiday season, global tourism slows down, and that is also the case in Hawaii. As a result, January is one of the least crowded months of the year on basically all islands. Watch for one busier weekend: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when Americans often travel to the islands.

February is a cheap month to visit Hawaii.

The weather slowly improves as the year starts to progress. Temperatures in February are similar to January, but Hawaii starts to see less rain during the second month of the year. The average maximum temperature remains a comfortable 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius) while precipitation in the state drops. Nights can be colder but not cold enough for winter jackets.

February is a slow month for global travel. Once again, Hawaii is no exception. Except for those on romantic getaways around Valentine’s day (February 14), Hawaii will not get too busy in February. Especially the last weeks of the month see low crowds. If you want to enjoy relatively low prices, visit Hawaii in February. Hotel prices are relatively low, and you can probably get reasonable airfares.

March is a busy month in Hawaii

March is a relatively busy month in Hawaii. It is more active on all islands, including Oahu, Maui, Big Island, and Kauai, than in February or April. Interestingly, these relatively larger crowds cannot be explained by improved weather. March is wetter than the month before or after. A sudden temperature rise also does not explain the popularity of vacations in March. The third month of the year sees similar temperatures (80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius)) as the months before. March is also most definitely colder than April.

So how can it be that March is a relatively busy month in Hawaii? American youngsters. Many young Americans travel to sunny destinations in March as Spring Break offers them an opportunity to travel. Spring Break makes all sunny destinations within the United States busier than the surrounding months. If you want to avoid crowds in March, traveling outside during busy Spring Break weeks is best. You can find out which weeks are Spring Break weeks by doing some research. For example, by searching for ‘Spring Break Events March Hawaii.’

Tours & Excursions

April is a wonderful month for a hawaii vacation.

While March can be relatively busy, things slow down again in April. With smaller crowds and even better weather (less rain and higher temperatures), April is a great month to visit Hawaii. The average temperature for the State increases to 81 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius). Although it is a quiet month, it can get busier during some specific weekends. You can identify these weekends if you watch for school vacations and local events. Essential to be aware of is that in 2021 and 2022, Easter falls in April. Around the world, Easter is the first test for destinations preparing for a busy summer season. Although this effect is much more significant in Europe than in the United States, it does bring additional tourists to Hawaii. During the Easter weekend, Tourism picks up rapidly and slows down again immediately after. Although this effect is not as significant in the United States, the Easter weekend still makes Hawaii busier than other weekends.

Expect relatively large crowds during the long Easter weekend in Hawaii. Easter in Hawaii in 2021 takes place during the first weekend of the month (April 4, April 5). In 2022, Easter will take place halfway the month: April 17 or April 18.

May is a perfect month to visit Hawaii

May is a perfect shoulder season month. Temperatures slowly start to rise while rainfall is much lower. Compared to other sunny states in the United States, Hawaii is much drier in Spring. Meanwhile, the larger tourist crowds have yet to arrive on Hawaii’s islands. May is simply one of the slowest months on the islands.

May is one of our favourite travel months. The weather is usually good and the crowds are still relatively low.

Nevertheless, it can get a bit crowded around Memorial Day and during the Japanese Golden Week, a series of April holidays in Japan, when tourists from the country travel to Hawaii. Significantly Waikiki is affected. The golden week falls in the first week of May. For smaller crowds, you should pick dates between Japanese Golden Week and Memorial Day in the United States in the middle of the month.

You can benefit from some of the cheapest hotel rates of the year in May. The average prices drop well below the yearly average. Airfares, although less predictable, also drop and are incredibly cheap if they are booked early. We believe the pre-season in Hawaii is better than the late season. Although the weather might be slightly better in September, the risk of a hurricane in May is much smaller.

June: quiet before the tourism storm in Hawaii

June is the driest month of the year in Hawaii. If you are visiting one of the islands during the sixth month of the year, it is unlikely you will see lots of rain. Meanwhile, the average maximum temperature for the entire state has climbed to a warm 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29.4 Celsius). Only at higher altitudes can it get chilly during the warm Hawaiian summer.

Although June marks the start of Hawaii’s busy summer peak season, it is not as active as the most popular months, July and August. Especially early in the month, most tourists are yet to travel to the islands. Crowds tend to get bigger later in the month when summer vacation gets into full swing.

July is hot and dry in Hawaii

July is hot, dry, and busy in Hawaii. The month starts with the incredibly busy Fourth of July weekend as Independence day attracts tourists from around the country. During the weekend, hotel prices surge, and airfares become expensive. Although it gets quieter after the busy Independence Day weekend, US school vacations keep the entire month alive. If you want to avoid crowds, July is probably not the best month to visit Hawaii. However, there are many opportunities to beat the crowds when you visit one of the islands. Be aware that the last two weeks of the month can be extremely crowded.

Although July is a bit wetter than June, rain is unusual and mainly occurs in the evening. The average temperature is rising, with a Hawaii state-wide maximum average of 85 Fahrenheit (29.4 Celsius). Meanwhile, the ocean has also warmed up, making swimming very comfortable.

August in Hawaii is hot and sunny.

August and September are the hottest months of the year in Hawaii. The average maximum temperature peaked at 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 Celsius). At the same time, August is a very dry month with almost no rain. Even in the evenings, the weather remains comfortable, with temperatures not dropping below 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 Celsius) at night. Of course, temperatures at higher altitudes can be colder. Please note that August and September are within the Pacific hurricane season.

With the warm and dry weather, crowds flock to the islands. Except for the December holiday season, the summer months of July and August are the busiest. Like most of the world, peak season peaks in Hawaii during the last two weeks of July and the first weeks in August. This is especially the case for traveling families. Things calm down towards the month’s end but get a bit more intense again if Labor Day falls early in September.

Hawaii tourism slows down in September

In September, global tourism starts to slow as the beach routine makes place for the daily work routine. Hawaii is no exception, and tourists begin to leave the islands quickly as September progresses. Meanwhile, the average maximum temperature remains at 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 Celsius). September remains a very dry month as precipitation is low. Be aware September is within the Pacific hurricane season.

Except for the Labor Day weekend, crowds are low in September. After the last summer holiday weekend, Hawaii in September gets quiet compared to the two busy summer months. If you want to avoid crowds in Hawaii, September is the best month to travel as long as you go after Labor Day.

October is a quiet month to visit Hawaii.

Around the world, October and November are two slow travel months. Hawaii is no exception. Tourism will have slowed down on the islands from early September onwards. Tourism will not pick up again until the hectic holiday season ends in late December. October in Hawaii means relatively good weather, with an average maximum temperature of 85 degrees (29.4 Celsius). That temperature is the same as most summer months. Unfortunately, it gets a bit wetter in October as precipitation towards the end of the calendar year increases. However, October is much drier than November or December. Please be aware October is also within the hurricane season in the Pacific.

November is a slow month

November is the slowest month of the year for global tourism. In Hawaii, November marks the start of the winter season. Although winter weather in Hawaii is much more comfortable than winter weather in the mainland USA, it does get noticeably wetter and colder. The average maximum temperature drops to 83 degrees Fahrenheit (28 Celsius) during the day, but you will notice winter, mainly in the evenings, when temperatures drop quickly. Be aware early November still falls within the Pacific hurricane season.

Although November sees some of the lowest crowds of the year, it can get busy around Thanksgiving weekend. As a result, prices are low all month except for one of America’s most important holidays. November is your month if you want to travel with small crowds and great deals and don’t mind a bit of rain.

December is busy in Hawaii

December has a short but very intense peak season. With most Americans off from work and school in the second half of the month, many replace the cold and wet weather on the mainland for more tropical destinations. The last two weeks of the year are Hawaii’s busiest and most expensive 14 days of the year. This is the case for most other sunny American destinations as well. As a result, tourism in Hawaii and Florida starts to heat up. You can expect larger crowds and higher prices for your flight and hotel in December. It is also a time when there are relatively more families on vacation.

Meanwhile, December in Hawaii is the wettest month of the year, with frequent showers. Good to know is that rain on the islands usually does not stick around for days. Rains come in short shower bursts that hardly last for more than 10 to 15 minutes. The average maximum temperature in Hawaii will drop to 81 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius), a fraction warmer than the first months of the year.

Which hawaiian island is the best to visit our 2024 ranking.

Though it can be easy to assume the six most visited Hawaiian Islands offer similar experiences, they are more diverse than you can imagine. From Waimea Canyon to Waikiki Beach, Hawaii’s wealth of natural beauty (think: cerulean waters, verdant vegetation and stunning white sand beaches ) is just waiting to be explored. To help you decide which Hawaiian Island is ideal for your next vacation, U.S. News took into account sights, expert opinion and reader input to determine the best Hawaiian Islands to visit. Vote for your favorite island below to have a say in next year's list. 

Kaua'i

Hawaii - the big island, honolulu - oahu.

Though it's perhaps most famous for the fabulous coastlines of Ka'anapali Beach and Wailea Beach, Maui is a great option for both couples and families looking for variety in their vacation. Away from the sand, you can drive the Road to Hana, enjoy a bird's-eye view during a helicopter tour , see one of the world's largest dormant volcanoes at Haleakala National Park and get up close to marine wildlife while snorkeling in Honolua Bay or around Molokini. Then, for an experience you won’t forget, relax on the volcanic coastline of Wai'anapanapa State Park, where jet-black sands meet vibrant sapphire waters.

With a more easygoing environment than other islands like Oahu and the Big Island, the Garden Isle lets its wild, natural beauty speak for itself and is perfect for an adventurous getaway. The main attractions here are Koke'e State Park and Waimea Canyon, otherwise known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." But you also won’t want to miss Kaua'i’s breathtaking Wailua Falls or dreamy Po'ipu Beach. And if a challenging hike is what you’re after, it doesn’t get more scenic than the Kalalau Trail along the rugged Napali Coast. Just remember to pack galoshes and a rain jacket – Kaua'i is one of Hawaii's rainiest islands.

The island of Hawaii's bevy of one-of-a-kind attractions and family-friendly activities makes it ideal for travelers who prefer a jam-packed itinerary. Not only does the Big Island offer white and black sand beaches , including the famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, it is also home to lush rainforests and two active volcanoes at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. History buffs will love visiting Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site (home to one of Hawaii's largest restored temples) and Kealakekua Bay (where British explorer James Cook first arrived in 1779). Or, head to Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park to see petroglyphs, ancient Hawaiian fishponds and green sea turtles.

The least-developed island on this list, Moloka'i was made for those who don’t mind going off the beaten path. With lush rainforests, miles of beautiful beaches and some of the tallest sea cliffs in the world, Moloka'i is a great place to reconnect with nature, whether you’re staying overnight at one of Moloka'i’s quiet oceanfront cottages – there is only one hotel on the island – or visiting on a day trip from one of the other Hawaiian Islands. Top activities here include soaking up some sun on secluded Papohaku Beach, snorkeling Moloka'i's 28-mile reef or joining a guided cultural hike through Halawa Valley.

Dubbed The Gathering Place, Oahu is home to plenty of famous sites and a great jumping-off point for first-time visitors to the Hawaiian Islands. On the South Shore, you'll find Waikiki Beach, Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbor National Memorial and Le'ahi (Diamond Head) State Monument, all in or near the capital city of Honolulu. Meanwhile, the North Shore is home to a more laid-back vibe, as well as the renowned waves at Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach, which host major surfing competitions every year. After exploring along the coast, head inland to the tranquil Byodo-In Temple, a replica of a Buddhist temple in Uji, Japan.

For a secluded, nature-centric escape, set your sights on Lana'i. Centrally located between Maui and Moloka'i, this remote hideaway makes a great home base for inter-island travel. Travelers can take a four-wheel-drive vehicle to spots like Kaiolohia (Shipwreck Beach) and Kaunolu Village, a prehistoric fishing village that was once frequented by King Kamehameha I, or spend their days sunbathing on Polihua Beach. In winter, head to Hulopo'e Bay for terrific whale-watching opportunities. Then, make your way to Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods), an enchanting rock garden that was once part of a native dryland forest, for a breathtaking Lana'i sunset.

The best time to visit Hawaii

With year-round sunshine and balmy weather, any time is a great time to visit Hawaii . But while there are no major seasonal changes in the Islands, there are subtle differences in weather, crowds and prices throughout the year.

Most visitors travel during breaks, so summer and mid-spring are busy. But the busiest time in Hawaii is actually winter – specifically the last two weeks of December through early January – as people flee cold climates for sunny beaches and warm weather. During this peak time, prices for airfare and hotels are the highest. You'll find cheaper rates during late spring and fall, before Thanksgiving.

During the summer, the average daytime temperature is 85°F; in the winter, it's 78°F. But summer tends to be drier and hotter; winter is often rainy and wet. For more tips and advice, read on before you plan your next vacation to the Islands . 

June to August is busy, but the weather is perfect

If you want to experience Hawaii at its best, visit during the summer. The days are long and languid, the weather is almost always sunny, and there's so much to do. But schools are out on summer break, making this a peak season for traveling to the Islands. Expect higher prices on airfare and hotels and longer lines at popular attractions. Reservations for things like Hanauma Bay on Oʻahu and sunrise at Haleakalā National Park  on Maui may be harder to nab.

Surf is up on south-facing shores – like Waikiki on Oʻahu and Poʻipu on Kauaʻi – and outdoor events and festivals are happening on every island. June starts with the annual King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade through Waikiki. Every weekend, Japanese temples host bon dances at night, with traditional dancing, music and food. On Maui, there's the annual Kapalua Wine & Food Festival ,  Maui AgFest and Maui Film Festival .

Every island has a county fair, with keiki (kids) rides, live entertainment and food booths. And surfing is celebrated at the annual Duke's OceanFest in August, a weeklong festival in honor of the legendary Duke Kahanamoku, with surf contests, surf polo, swimming, stand-up paddling and Hawaii's only dog surfing competition.

Most plumeria trees will be in full bloom, and it's also mango season, so expect lots of mangoes on the menu in restaurants and at farmers markets across the state.

September to October is the cheapest time to visit

Fall is typically the slower season for travel in Hawaii – you'll run into fewer crowds but still enjoy warm temperatures, averaging a high of 88°F. Airfare from the US mainland is usually at its lowest, and finding deals  (and rooms) at hotels will be easier.

Evenings are balmy – perfect for a quiet dinner at an oceanfront restaurant – and the ocean is actually the warmest it will be all year. It's still hurricane season until November, though, with most hurricanes hitting the Islands in late summer and early fall.

November to January is the best time to escape winter — but expect crowds

It's no surprise the winter months are Hawaii's busiest – you can still lounge on the beaches here and bask in the sun. The days start getting shorter in late fall, and November, namely Thanksgiving weekend, signifies the start of Hawaii's busiest travel period. Rooms may be hard to get, so book early if you're planning a trip to Hawaii during this time. This is also the priciest season, though you can sometimes score deals on airfare.

Winter months bring monster surf to the north shores of all islands. Professional surfers flock to Oʻahu's fabled North Shore for contests, including the Triple Crown of Surfing and the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitation – both exciting to watch from shore. (Don't attempt to get in the water when the surf's up.) The Honolulu Marathon happens in December, when thousands of people hit the roads from Waikiki to Hawaiʻi Kai. 

Starting in November, humpback whales – called kohola in the Hawaiian language – start their annual return to Hawaii to breed, birth and nurse calves. An estimated 8000 to 12,000 migrate from Alaska to the Islands' warm, shallow waters from November through April, and the protected marine mammals can be seen from every island.

February and early March are often rainy and slow 

Late winter brings good news for budget travelers and anyone looking for a more relaxing vacation: you can often find discounts on airfare and hotels, and beaches, hiking trails and popular attractions aren't nearly as crowded as during the peak summer and winter seasons.

Winter months tend to be rainier than summer, but the showers are usually localized and don't last that long. This is a great time to hit farmers' markets – every island has them! – as avocados, citrus, lychee and other tropical fruits are still in season.

Mid-March to early April is an ideal time for families

With the exception of spring and Easter breaks, spring is a slower time of year for travel. But when schools are out, it's another peak season. The prices aren't as high as they are in the summer and winter months, though, and the weather is cool and comfortable, not summery hot – perfect for outdoor adventures with kids. 

It's a nice time to walk through zoos – the Honolulu Zoo on Oʻahu is the largest in the state, but the Panaʻewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens in Hilo is charming, with a great playground and botanical gardens. The ocean is fairly calm during this period, making it great for snorkeling and swimming.

And if it rains, there's plenty to do indoors. Oʻahu has a few indoor playgrounds, including Kids City  in Honolulu and Kapolei, Hawaii Children's Discovery Center in Kakaʻako and the new Keiki Kingdom , with the largest ball pit on the island. This is also a great time to take in a luau, which can often be sold out during busier seasons.

May to June is best for couples 

Hawaii is one of the most romantic places in the world, and heading there during a slower time – fewer visitors, emptier beaches – makes for an even more magical trip for the lovers out there. This is just before the peak-summer travel time, so you'll likely find cheaper flights and accommodations.

Temperatures are in the mid-80s, and the weather isn't as rainy as in early spring, which means it's a great time to hit hiking trails, walk along beaches and explore charming neighborhoods, like Kailua on Oʻahu, Paia on Maui and Hanalei on Kauai. This is also a great time to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park , as it's not as crowded or rainy. (Still, if you're hiking through the park, you should bring rain gear just in case.)

Visitors to Hawaii and their daily spending fell more sharply in April than they had in any month since the Aug. 8 Maui wildfires — an indication that even the peak summer season could prove soft.

Jeffrey Eslinger, senior director, market insights, for the Hawai‘i Visitors & Convention Bureau, said that overall, “summer is softer than it is typically.”

Eslinger said Oahu and Kauai will perform better this summer than the rest of the state, where dampening is apparent in the TravelClick report for the week ended May 19. The report compares total hotel room nights sold for the year ahead with what was on the books for the same time in 2023.

Eslinger said summer arrivals to Oahu will be bolstered by the 13th annual Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture, Thursday through June 16, and the 29th annual Rim of the Pacific military exercise, June 26-Aug. 2.

He said Oahu also will see some gains from the Hawai‘i Convention Center summer business, including the National Conference on Race & Ethnicity in Higher Education, Tuesday to Saturday, which has brought roughly 5,000 delegates to Hawaii, as well as several other citywide conferences that will bring another 5,000 delegates later in the summer.

However, Eslinger said West Maui is leading the summer doldrums with a 23.3% drop in bookings for June, a 21.3% drop for July and a 26.9% drop for August with losses widening until January. TravelClick statewide data shows a 1.8% decline in June, a 0.4% decrease in July and a 1.5% decrease in August.

Keith Vieira, principal of KV & Associates, Hospitality Consulting, said the summer malaise is carrying over into fall, which has even steeper drops.

TravelClick data shows statewide hotel bookings sliding 12.2% in September, 9.7% in October, 8.7% in November and 1.5% in December, which generally gets a boost from the festive season.

The softness that has been present in Hawaii’s visitor industry since the Maui wildfires deepened in the spring. On any given day in April, the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism reported, there were 207,827 visitors in the Hawaiian islands, down 12.2% from April 2023.

In April, DBEDT reported, arrivals to the state dropped 8.9% year over year to 753,551 visitors. Visitor arrivals in April were 88.7% of the pre-pandemic April 2019 level.

Visitor arrivals in April fell for Hawaii’s core U.S. West and U.S. East markets, as well as for Canada and the category called “all others,” which includes international markets outside of Japan and Canada. Arrivals rose from cruise ships and from Japan, which was Hawaii’s top international market before the pandemic.

Total visitor spending measured in nominal dollars in April was $1.5 billion, a drop of 12.6% compared with April 2023. However, total visitor spending was 14.3% higher than in April 2019, when nominal spending was about $1.3 billion.

Spending fell for the U.S. West, U.S. East and Canada and for the “all others” category.

Results were mixed across the islands and markets.

DBEDT Director James Kunane Tokioka said in a statement, “This is the first month that arrivals to Oahu decreased since March 2021.”

“The decrease was partially due to Easter falling on March 31, which pushed spring break travel into March instead of April,” Tokioka said. “Easter 2023 was on April 9, which affected the year-over-year performance.”

He added that the cruise market performed well in April, and visitors who came via out-of-state cruise ships registered the second-highest monthly arrivals on record. However, he added that “this market typically has less impact on the destination than visitors who travel by air as cruise travelers often participate in group tour activities versus exploring the islands individually and renting cars.”

Vieira said while the Easter shift contributed to the April slowdown in tourism, other factors also have contributed to sluggish summer and fall bookings. He said the strength of the U.S. dollar is causing international visitors to view Hawaii as too expensive, and Americans to eye foreign destinations where they have more buying power. Vieira said some travelers also continue to feel unwelcome following the Maui wildfires, which put more strain on the community and intensified pushback against tourism.

“There have been a fair amount of negative stories about Hawaii not wanting more visitors. That clearly isn’t the majority but it’s a vocal minority,” he said. “The only way we can counter that is with positive stories.”

Tom Mullen, HVCB interim president and CEO, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that its newest campaign aimed at U.S. travelers, “The People, the Place, the Hawaiian Islands,” began four weeks ago and will run through June.

“We are targeting the mindful traveler through national banner ads, emails, social and digital media,” he said. “We are seeing a response rate to the ads that we are running that is higher than the industry benchmark, so we know that we are targeting the right customer and getting a response.”

Mullen said he thinks rising Hawaii hotel rates, when combined with other fees and taxes, are dissuading some customers. For instance, Pleasant Holidays’ wholesale package pricing for the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort shows daily room rates of $495, which rise to $715 per night once resort fees, parking fees and taxes are added.

“That’s about a 40% increase,” Mullen said, adding that all-in nightly costs for hotel rooms in Jamaica are $436 and $411 in Mexico.

HVCB, which handles branding for Hawaii’s top U.S. visitor source market, was slated to provide an update on its campaign and other initiatives Thursday at the HTA board’s monthly meeting. However, the HTA board deferred the presentation, along with three other items on its public agenda, after spending about four hours in executive session with state Attorney General Anne Lopez and Deputy Attorney General John Cole.

After the HTA board emerged from its closed-door session, Cole reported publicly that there was a full discussion and the board consulted with its attorney on agenda item No. 8, regarding questions and issues related to the board’s powers and duties.

“No action was taken or required to be taken,” Cole said. “But it probably will lead to some things in the future.”

He said the HTA board had a long discussion on agenda item No. 9, a personnel matter, “with no action taken, including a vote by the board to take no action on the personnel matter that was discussed.”

For agenda item No. 10(b), Cole said the HTA board discussed the status of some issues pending with the state auditor for the HTA audit.

“There will be some action taken under the (Administrative & Audit Standing Committee) later. No action by the board was necessary,” he said.

The board approved a request from HTA board member Mike White, who chairs the Administrative & Audit Standing Committee, to have HTA staff draft a request for proposals to solicit a search firm to assist in its efforts to hire a new president and CEO.

Former HTA President and CEO John De Fries resigned in September. HTA Chief Administrative Officer Daniel Naho‘opi‘i serves as HTA’s interim president and CEO.
