  • Highlights include Dole pineapple plantation, coffee & macadamia nut farms, North Shore beaches, mountains, and more
  • Optional Pearl Harbor add-on (separate tour )
  • Includes hot lunch, tastings, and door-to-door transport
  • Small group tour of 8 max (often less), or private tour

Experience the highlights of Oahu on a full day “circle island” sightseeing tour with a knowledgeable and fun local guide in a small group setting.

In newer premium vehicles, you will be picked up from your lodging and head up into the hills above Honolulu to the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl Crater to where over 53,000 veterans were laid to rest from the many major wars of the 20th century. Then you'll head up through the middle of the island, stopping first at Green World Coffee Farm (coffee and chocolate tastings), then at Dole Pineapple Plantation (cutting & tasting demonstration, and short gardens tour).

Next you'll visit multiple beaches on the North Shore, renowned not just for their white sand and turquoise water but also as the legendary surf capital of the world, especially in the winter with monster waves attracting surfers and spectators from afar. Stops include famous Sunset Beach and Haleiwa Beach, where turtle sightings are common.

A cooked-to-order hot lunch will be served from a popular food truck in quaint historical Haleiwa Town, where you can also check out some shops.

You'll stop at a tropical fruit stand and have the opportunity to purchase local fruit, banana bread, or deep fried bananas (lumpias).

The tour will make its way down the eastern shore (“windward side”) with stunning coastal views on one side (including of Chinaman’s Hat) and scenic farms and mountains on the other. You will have the opportunity to enjoy macadamia nut tastings (and nut cracking) at a farm, and there will be many opportunities to stop to take pictures.

As you cross through the mountains, you’ll stop for a climactic view of the eastern coast and offshore islands at Pali Lookout. Before the tour concludes, you'll get a short driving tour of some of the famous sites of Honolulu, including historical palaces and famous museums.

You may want to compare all 3 of our Circle Island Tours ; other options include: - An identical small group  tour  but with  Pearl Harbor , the most popular attraction in Hawaii. Or if you can, we recommend complimenting a Circle Island Tour with a more in-depth  stand-alone Pearl Harbor Tour  on a separate day. - A large coach bus tour (which reduces the price) and has a somewhat different route and stops

TravelShack's Choice

  • For shared tour, smaller group (4-8, whereas others are often more than 25) means more personalized attention from guide, more customization to your interests, better group camaraderie, less time waiting around for everyone to get on and off van, more time for stops, and no one being left behind (one major tour shuttle leaves people weekly!)
  • Includes some off-the-beaten-path stops/areas
  • No wasted stops at random souvenir shops to get you to purchase things (common with some others); there are shopping opportunities, but they are all unique on their own without any pressure to purchase

Availability Within a few weeks of tour dates, there is often a minimum of 4 paid seats to book some days on vans that otherwise don't have sign-ups. For smaller parties, if you don't see an available date that works for you, please contact us as we may be able to open up another date. Or please consider our other larger bus Circle Island Tour that has availability on most dates.

Key Details

  • Door-to-door transport on spacious modern tour van (details & exceptions below)
  • Knowledgeable guide with deep local ties
  • Cooked-to-order hot local lunch
  • Snacks, tastings, and drinks

Free pickups from virtually all lodgings in Waikiki / Honolulu. The most common lodgings can be selected from the drop-down list at checkout.

Honolulu airport pickups/dropoffs are available (8:15 am, with dropoff around 5 pm). Please note luggage is generally not permitted on this tour.

Arriving or departing on a cruise ship ? The tour picks up at the terminal at 8 am and drops off around 5 pm. For Pride of America passengers, Saturdays may work, or better would be to choose another day; see FAQ below for more details.

Staying on the West Side ( Ko Olina , Kapolei, Ewa Beach), the North Shore, or anywhere else outside Honolulu? You can meet in Honolulu (Ala Moana shopping center, free parking) at 7:30 am. Or you can book a private tour and it will include pickup/dropoff. However, if you are looking for pickup far from Honolulu, such as the North Shore, there would be a premium cost beyond a private, in which case you can email us to inquire.

More details can be found in the FAQs below.

  • There is so much to see on the popular circle island route. This tour has been optimized by those with decades of experience and will ensure you see the most with high quality stops than would likely be possible on your own in one day. Proper pacing means you will spend the right amount of time on each stop without running out of time before dark or rushing through.
  • Make a personal connection with a local guide with deep ties to Oahu, which will bring to life your Hawaii sightseeing experience.
  • Visit some off-the-beaten-path sites based on your guide’s local insider knowledge
  • This is a popular route that can be crowded at times; let the tour handle parking at the various stops, as well as optimize the best itinerary to minimize peak crowds
  • Unfortunately car break-ins do occur on this route, and it’s less stressful and safer with a secured tour vehicle
  • Especially taking into account the usually high cost and difficulty with parking in urban Waikiki, consider foregoing renting a vehicle on your trip (at least the whole time)

This map shows a general representation of the circle island tour route. The tour usually goes clockwise. This map does not show Ko Olina lodging pick-ups, which may also be possible.

The following are a mixture of stops (“S") and drive-bys ("D"), listed in chronological order. Stops in bold are longer (30-45 minutes), whereas other stops are less. Please note that this itinerary is not guaranteed and can vary a bit, depending on weather, traffic, time, and the make-up and interests of the group. The guide/driver has some flexibility, so feel free to speak up on your tour to express your interests, as well as to make a note with your booking.

To add on 1.5-2 hours at Pearl Harbor, consider our otherwise identical (but longer) Circle Island Combo Tour .

National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl Crater (D) * Tripler Army Medical Center (D) Pacific Fuel Storage Bunkers (D) Kamehameha Schools (D) Fort Shafter (D) Green World Coffee Farm & Gift Shop (S) Dole Pineapple Plantation & Gift Shop (S) Haleiwa Beach with possible turtle sightings (S) Haleiwa Town - Hot Lunch and Shops (S) Pua’ena Point (S) Laniakea Beach (D) Waimea Valley (D) ** Pu’u O Mahuka Heiau State Monument with view of Waimea Bay (S/D) ***  Sunset Beach (S) Chun’s Reef (D) Kahuku Fruit Stands (S) Morman Tabernacle in Laie (D) Punalu’u (D) Kahana Valley (D) Kualoa Beach Park / Chinaman’s Hat (S) Macadamia Nut Farm & Gift Shop (S) Waikane (D) Pali Lookout (S) **** Honolulu sights (palaces, museums, etc.) (D/S)

* Tours are not permitted to stop here, only drive through ** Does not enter Waimea Valley botanical gardens; focus is on overlook views *** 2023 update: this stop may not be possible due to access issues **** Sometimes not visited due to road closure or traffic. In that case, more time is usually spent for Honolulu city tour, including photo stops, time permitting.

Shared Tour

The standard shared tour takes up to 8 people (usually on a van designed for 14) and is $179/person.

Due to the small size of the tour (8 people or less) and that a car seat is legally required for those age 7 & under (therefore taking up at least one seat), children are the same price as adults.

Private Tour

The price of a private tour is $1,399 for up to 8 people and then $150 for any additional people (up to 14 people total; for larger parties, please contact us). If you can only do a date within 24 hours (i.e. tomorrow), private tours are not currently bookable online, but please contact us as it may still be possible.

For the shared tour, in most cases you will be in a modern Ford Transit passenger van designed for 14 passengers but with only 8 tour guests maximum (often less). However, if there are only 4 people booked on the tour, it may be in a smaller vehicle (but luxury and spacious).

The Transit tour van has comfortable seats, air-conditioning, and large windows. It's not a low-ceiling cargo van like some other tour companies. Seating is mostly attached, but individual seats are molded. Couples will end up having their own row (designed for 3-4) which is better for maneuverability and comfort than if it was stand-alone "captain seats" and so they can easily see views on either side.

For private tours, larger groups of 7+ will definitely be in the Transit tour van. Smaller groups may be assigned a spacious and luxury smaller vehicle (e.g., Chevy Suburban or Ford Expedition) although if a preference for the Transit van is made at booking, we can likely confirm you for the larger vehicle.

  • On occasion, the minimum of 4 paid seats for the shared tour may not be met, in which case we will contact you with options if we are unable to move others. To minimize this risk and you are booking within the next couple of months, if possible please choose a date that shows 6 spots or less available ; otherwise if it doesn't say how many seats are left, it means you are the first to sign up. You may also want to choose Pay Later when booking. For a tour with no minimums, consider our large group Circle Island Tour .
  • Not able to do an available day? If you pay for at least 4 spots or do a private, we may be able to open up another date for you, even possibly for tomorrow; please contact us with the number of people, the dates that would work for you, and your lodging. Or please consider our similar Circle Island Tour with Pearl Harbor .
  • In the booking calendar for the shared tour, there may be some dates that require booking a minimum of 4 spots, especially within the next couple of weeks. This is because the tour requires 4 paid seats to go out at the shared tour price. If you are less than 4, these dates won't show up, but you may want to select 4 spots to see if any additional dates show up . You then have the option to book 4 spots in order to book that date and make a note at checkout if no one else signs up whether you would: 1) cancel or change dates, 2) proceed as a heavily discounted private tour by paying for all 4 seats. In the meantime, if another party signs up to meet the minimum, your final charge would just be for your actual party size (e.g., 2) versus all 4 seats. Alternative to making such a booking (preferred), you can contact us and we can keep you posted if we get another booking to allow you to book only your exact number of people on the shared tour.

Where does this tour pick up from and at what time?

For those staying in Waikiki/Honolulu, the tour picks up from virtually all lodgings in this area.

Lodging pickups are around 7:30-8 am (the exact time will be included in your confirmation email) and drop-offs 4:30-5:30 pm, depending on your exact lodging, traffic, pace of group, etc.

For those staying in Ko Olina, Kapolei, Ewa Beach, or elsewhere, please meet in Honolulu at the Ala Moana Shopping Center (7:50 am, 45-60 min drive, free parking). Or you can book a private tour to include pickup/dropoff, although if you are far from Honolulu (e.g., North Shore) there would likely be an additional cost.

The tour does pickup at the Honolulu cruise ship terminal (8 am) and airport (8:15 am); more info below. Please factor in 30-60 minutes for disembarking the cruise ship and 15-30+ minutes to deplane and get to airport pickup.

Can I be picked up or dropped off at the airport?

Yes, but please make sure to arrive in time for pick-up at around 8-8:15 am and depart after being dropped off around 5-6 pm. If you are also spending a night in Oahu, then it is recommended to store the luggage at your lodging prior to the tour. You could also consider storing or checking in your luggage early at the airport (more info  here ). Due to security & liability reasons, the tour prefers not to take luggage on the tour, although exceptions are considered on a case-by-case basis for private tours.

Can I do this tour if I am doing the Pride of America cruise?

If you were to do it at the beginning of your trip, we recommend prior to your Saturday departure if possible. If you prefer Saturday, you should get dropped off at the Pride of America by 5 pm, although to guarantee it, you would need to do a private tour.

If at the end of your trip, with a scheduled cruise ship return to Honolulu of 7 am on Saturday, that would be enough time for pick-up at the pier for this tour (8 am). Or if you're staying longer in Oahu, pickup in Waikiki would be around 7:30-45 am if you want to be picked up at your hotel after dropping off your bags. Or you could consider doing a later date.

If you are doing this tour on the same day you start or end your cruise, luggage should not be brought on tour. Some hotels provide a service to drop off your luggage at the cruise terminal for you. For example, the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort have provided such a service for the Pride of America cruise ship; please inquire with these lodgings for details and to confirm this service is still offered. Or see FAQ below about other luggage storage options.

Can I bring luggage on tour?

In general, the tour cannot bring luggage, for liability/security reasons and space constraints. Some options include: 1) Leaving at your hotel front desk even if you've checked out that morning 2) Storing at the airport (more info here ) 3) Storing at another location as listed on Bounce 4) Book a date where you are not constrained by luggage

If necessary, there may be some flexibility with private tours.

Is breakfast served?

No. However, the morning includes a stop at a coffee shop and pineapple farm/shop, both which include free tastings and food available for purchase.

What’s for lunch?

Lunch is at a popular food stand, Big Wave Shrimp, on the North Shore. You can order off the menu, and an entree and drink is included in the price of the tour. The menu includes a variety of shrimp styles (Garlic, Crunchy, Spicy, Peeled, Lemon Peppered), Steak and Short Ribs dishes, fried chicken wings, fish & chips, calamari, and veggie spring rolls for vegetarians. Served with rice, salad, and local pineapple. Seasonings have Thai and Japanese influences. Big Wave Shrimp has been featured in multiple tv shows, including on the Travel Channel, and has received a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence (4.5 star rating).

Gluten-free eaters can have boiled shrimp and request no dressing. They can accommodate those with food allergies, including shellfish allergy and nut allergies (no nuts used). Nevertheless, if this eatery is not a good fit for you, there are nearby food stands you can order from (note: you will be responsible for paying at other places).

Is there an age minimum?

There is no age minimum.

Hawaii law requires children under age 4 to ride in a child safety seat and children ages 4-7 to ride in a child safety seat or a booster seat. You may bring your own, or please select during checkout for the tour to provide ($20).

Please consider the length of the tour, much of it in a vehicle, in determining whether this tour is a good fit for your child and that your child won't significantly detract from the experience of any other passengers (if non-private tour).

How much physical exertion is on this tour?

There are some short walks, but these are optional and the tour guide will use their judgment in determining which stops are most appropriate for the guests on the tour. At the time of booking, there is a place to indicate any physical limitations. The tour does have a passenger weight limit of 320 lbs / 145 kg, primarily due to vehicle constraints.

Is this tour appropriate for wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, or strollers?

No. Federal/state law prevents the tour from taking these items onboard because it is not an ADA-compliant vehicle and these objects can serve as hazardous projectiles. They wouldn't be suitable anyways for most stops. Canes are permitted.

Does the tour enter Waimea Valley?

The tour did for a short period, but it no longer does because: 1) it required a significant amount of time, including a 1.5 mile round-trip walk, taking time away from other key Circle Island stops, and 2) more often than not Waimea Falls was either dry or a roaring brown mess, not very scenic or safe for a dip.

If entering Waimea Valley is important to you, it may be able to be accommodated on a private tour; please  contact us .

Will I be on the same van as others traveling with me if they book separately?

There may be more than one van that goes out on the same day. Therefore, if booking separately, please answer the question at checkout about you being with another party so we can ensure you are on the same van.

Is there swimming on this tour?

This is more a sightseeing tour, with a lot of ground to cover. There is a good amount of time outside the van, including visiting a few beautiful North Shore beaches, but there aren't swimming opportunities due to time constraints and liability/safety concerns (note: the North Shore beaches can be quite rough and are more for surfing, especially during the winter). The beach stops are more for the scenery than sunbathing or water play.

How long has the tour been operating?

The tour operator has been running highly rated private customized tours for groups through high end resorts on Oahu for a decade. Starting in Fall 2018, TravelShack partnered closely with them to develop an optimized standard itinerary and small group tour to allow more people to have a VIP experience at great value, with easy booking through TravelShack. More recently we've also added a private tour option.

Taxes added at checkout

  • 4.712% Hawaii/Oahu sales tax (GET)

Cancellation policy

  • No refunds within 48 hours of tour time for Shared tours; 1 week for Private tours, parties of 8+, or Ko Olina pickups (shared or private)
  • Any exceptions are considered on a case-by-case basis. If members of your party get sick, an Oahu-based doctor's note will be requested.
  • If there is a weather cancellation, you will be contacted to reschedule or receive a full refund
  • On occasion, the minimum of 4 paid seats for the shared tour may not be met, in which case we will contact you with options if we are unable to move others. Tip: to see how many people are already booked on a tour, click the date and if anyone is already booked, it will say how many seats are left (out of 8). For a tour with no minimums, consider our large group Circle Island Tour .

Restrictions

  • Wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, and strollers are not permitted due to both vehicle restrictions and not being appropriate at stops. Canes are permitted.

One of the coolest things about this Circle Island tour is that they bring along an expert nature guide to point out Hawaii’s unique flora and fauna, alongside information on Oahu’s rich history, geology, and heritage.

Best Oahu circle island tours - Diamond Head

This tour includes roundtrip transportation – they’ll pick you up from your hotel in Honolulu – and lunch from Fumi’s Shrimp Stand, with delicious options like lemon pepper shrimp and chicken katsu. You’ll also walk away with a 152-page, pocket nature guide as a souvenir!

Don’t forget your rain ponchos! Hawaii’s variable weather won’t stop you as this tour operates rain or shine. You’ll also want to wear comfortable shoes ( we like Tevas ) although you’ll only clock about 1.5 miles throughout the day. Guests must be 3 years and older.

Best Oahu Private Tours

A private tour of Oahu is a special treat! We love customizing our itinerary and having the flexibility of a private guide for the day. This is one of those times when splurging is well worth it!

Some of the best parts of a private tour is that you get to pick exactly what you want to see and do (or they’ll choose for you), you’ll be picked up right at your accommodation, and you have your tour guide all to yourself for any burning questions.

Here are two of our favorite companies for private tours of Oahu.

Mahina Hawaii

Mahina Hawaii runs completely private, 8-hour tours of Oahu, whether you want to do a full Circle Island Tour or focus on one specific area. The entire tour is tailored to what your group wants to see and they choose locations based on both your preferences and current weather conditions.

Although the itinerary is fully customizable, some options include snorkeling, hiking to waterfalls, cliff jumping, local food tastings, and traditional sightseeing at destinations like the Byodo-in Temple. Because this tour is just for you and your group, you can stop anywhere along the way, whether it is planned or spur of the moment.

Your private guide, transportation, snacks, water, snorkel equipment, and GoPro photos and videos are all included. Although lunch isn’t provided they have many delicious recommendations to choose from along the way.

If you have more than 7 in your group, you’ll need to let them know when you book the tour. They can get more van and local guides to fit your group size.

We went out with them on one of our Oahu trips and had a blast!

Halia Tours

Halia Tours operates a 9-hour circle island tour that can accommodate groups of up to 10. Each tour aims to include two 1.5-hour activities and 3 to 5 photo stops with plenty of time to grab snacks and a bite to eat along the way.

Because this is a private tour, your itinerary is fully customizable to circumnavigate Oahu’s Koolau Range. Just some of the activity options include Oahu’s world-famous beaches, kayaking, paddleboarding, hiking to Diamond Head or the Waimea Valley waterfall, scenic lookouts, and downtown Honolulu stops like the Bishop’s Museum. You can even “theme” your tour around foodie hot spots and shopping.

Best Oahu circle island tours - Waimea Valley Waterfall

Although they are a private tour group and guests can “go anywhere” they emphasized not entering local neighborhoods or heading to unsafe areas. Food, drinks, rentals, and any additional entrance fees are a la carte.

If you’re looking for a half-day option, they can also do a “ mini tour ” that will have you back at your hotel, sipping Mai Tais by the early afternoon. They have flat rate pricing for groups of 1-5 or 5-10, which might affect your decision if you’re a smaller group.

Best Oahu Circle Island Tour from Ko Olina

Most group tours on Oahu leave from Waikiki. If you’re staying in Ko Olina Resort (Disney’s Aulani, Marriott, Four Seasons) , E Noa is your best option! Offering a 9-hour, group circle island tour for up to 25 guests, this group size feels a little less “big box” than the large tours and allows for plenty of time to truly experience all of the wonderful Oahu highlights along the way.

You’ll avoid Honolulu traffic, stopping at sights like Nu’uanu Pali Lookout, Byodo-In Temple, Tropical Farms for macadamia nut cultivation, Waimea Valley, and end at the Dole Plantation.

Lunch and all of your admission fees are included in the price which makes this a great value. You’ll also be riding in style in a mini-bus with A/C and pick up and drop off from your hotel. Don’t forget to bring along your bathing suit and comfortable walking shoes.

Reminder, this tour departs from Ko Olina on the west side of Oahu.

Best Small Group Oahu Circle Island Tour

Pineapple Exp ’ small group circle island tour is the perfect option for those who want a more intimate experience without the private tour sticker shock.

Not only will you have plenty of time to stop and truly experience each place but your guide will be more readily available for questions and to drop some knowledge.

You’ll travel around Oahu with up to just 13 other vacationers on this 9-hour journey. Just some of your stops along the way are popular sights like Diamond Head State Monument, Byodo-In Temple, Makapu’u Point, Haleiwa Town Center, Dole Plantation, and North Shore Macadamia Nut Company. You’ll also stop at a few places that some of the other tours don’t such as Secret Turtle Beach and the Halona Blowhole.

Transportation to and from your hotel, water, snorkeling equipment, and Dole Whip are all included and all ages are welcome. You’re also gifted a Hawaiian pineapple at the end! How awesome is that?

What to Expect on an Oahu Circle Island Tour

Oahu circle island tour itinerary (sample).

Wondering what you’ll see on an Oahu Circle Island Tour? Here’s an idea of what you can expect…

  • Tours typically start in Honolulu and head east in a counter-clockwise direction around the island.
  • First stops are often Diamond Head Crater and Makapu’u Point, continuing north to Byodo-In Temple and one of the macadamia nut farms (yum!).
  • You’ll then explore the North Shore including the town of Haleiwa and Waimea Valley.
  • Most tours finish up at the Dole Plantation for a sweet treat on your way back to Honolulu.

Best Oahu circle island tours - Makapu'u Lighthouse

We highly recommend saving Pearl Harbor for a day of its own. Circle island tours that include a stop at Pearl Harbor are exceptionally long and it takes up a good chunk of the day that could be spent seeing other sights on Oahu.

We have a separate list of Pearl Harbor Tours if you’re interested in a guided option or you can easily visit on your own .

How long is an Oahu circle island tour?

Plan to be gone for an entire day on one of Oahu’s circle island tours. Most options range anywhere from 8 to 10 hours in total, with the majority of tours taking around 9 hours on average. Tours typically pick you up from (or near) your hotel early in the morning and drop you off just in time for dinner.

What is the best way to tour Oahu?

Hopping on a circle island guided tour is one of the best ways to see Oahu. These tours include most of the famous sites on the island, so you can tick off a bunch of different activities in one go. You’ll also have the added benefit of a professional guide, who can give you background on local history and culture, and you won’t have to worry about any planning.

If you’re thinking about DIYing the same route with a rental car, we highly recommend following our Oahu itinerary ! Keep in mind that renting a car can be a little bit of a hassle and comes with some “hidden” fees like overnight parking at your hotel.

What is the most scenic part of Oahu?

We couldn’t give the award for the most scenic part of Oahu to just one place. The whole island is very beautiful!

Our two favorites for scenery on the island are the North Shore and Windward Oahu.

The North Shore is a must for its more down-to-earth, local vibes and lush scenery. Winter brings big waves and surfing competitions that are exciting to see. A visit in summer means you can enjoy the stunning beaches from both the sand and the water.

Windward Oahu has a truly stunning stretch of coastline between Kualoa and Kailua. The Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden also makes for an incredible stop and is one of the most scenic spots we’ve found on Oahu. Picture 400 acres of gardens to explore with plants from around the world, all with the backdrop of Oahu’s jagged, Ko’olau Range.

DIY Oahu Circle Island Tour MAP + LIST :: Scenic self-drive around Oahu

If you’re short on time and looking to circle the island of Oahu for a day as part of a self-guided driving tour, there are definitely enough places to visit and things to do on Oahu to fill up your whole day!

Oahu circle island driving tour

Scenic driving on Oahu

This is an abbreviated version of things to do in Oahu  for your Oahu tour.

If you won’t be renting a car, here’s one of the best circle island tours on Oahu .

All the planning is done for you, and you will learn a lot!

Island driving = slow driving

Keep in mind that driving around the island takes time.

The time can be due to traffic, and it can also just generally be due to maximum speed on the island.

The highest speed limit you’ll find anywhere on Oahu is 55mph, and often you will be going below that.

So take it slow and take it all in!

And the earlier in the day you start, the more you can experience!

Your GPS device can also be cause for delay.

You can use the GPS on your phone as a guide, but it’s not definitive. Sometimes it might get confused and send you in the wrong direction.

But don’t get stressed!

You’re in Hawaii!

It’s all in the experience!

Just another reason to make sure you aren’t on a specific time table when you’re planning for an island road trip!

Now here first is a quick list.

Oahu circle island tour driving map

  • Diamond Head Crater
  • Hanauma Bay
  • Koko Head Hike
  • Makapuu Lighthouse Trail
  • Lanikai Pillboxes
  • Mokulua Islands
  • Pearl Harbor
  • Dole Pineapple Plantation
  • Laniakea Beach
  • Sharks Cove

Paid circle island tours

It’s definitely possible to rent a car and have a great day driving yourself around Oahu!

But if you want to get even more out of your trip around the island, you may also consider taking an organized tour. This can be a good way to learn more about Oahu and Hawaiian culture too.

Oahu Circle Island Tour Map + Itinerary

Best Oahu Circle Island Tour Itinerary Map

Here's a map of what's called the "Oahu Circle Island Tour" or "Oahu Grand Circle Island Tour."

Here are some common questions:

Q: How long is the Circle island tour?

A: Time-wise, a normal Circle Island Tour is between 6-8 hours.

If you were to just drive straight through, which you wouldn't really do, you could do this route in about 3 hours. Q: Can you circle Oahu?

A: You can half- circle the island of Oahu (see the yellow route above.)

Because the road stops at the northwest corner of Oahu, you cannot actually drive around the entire island.

Whenever you hear a tour company refer to a "circle island tour," they're always following Oahu's eastern coast (whether clockwise or counter-clockwise) and cutting through the middle of the island. Q: What is Oahu Grand Circle?

A: An Oahu "Grand" Circle is simply an Oahu circle island tour with the word "grand" in front of it, and is the same as any "circle island tour."

More often than not, it's used to refer to Oahu island tours in the larger 5 motor coaches. Q: How many miles is the circle of Oahu?

A: About 110-120 miles, starting from Waikiki.

Oahu Circle Island Tour Itinerary

Here's a general itinerary for the Oahu Circle Island Tour. Keep in mind that each company may add or skip stops, and also spend different amounts of time at each stop, but in general, this is what 90% of the tour companies use as their "Oahu Circle Island Tour Itinerary"...

2. Drive through Kahala : 5-10 min

3. Drive between Hanauma Bay & Koko Head Crater

4. Halona Blowhole 15 min

Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Diamond Head State Monument, 18th Ave. Waikiki, Honolulu, Oahu, HI 96815

The first lookout we visit is an elevated view perched on the eastern side of Waikiki’s famous Diamond Head Volcano. This lookout grants us a great opportunity for pictures of the south eastern coastline of Oahu, with notable sights as far as Hanauma bay and Maui on a clear day. The location is more formally known as Amelia Earhart Lookout, known for where bystanders gathered to watch Earhart make her first solo aviation journey from Hawaii to North America.

Stop At: Halona Blowhole, Kalanian’ole Highway, Oahu, HI 96825

Halona Blowhole Molten lava tubes from volcanic eruptions that occurred from Oahu’s Koko Head crater formed the natural occurrence known as the Halona Blowhole. This lava tube extends into the ocean with a very narrow opening at the top, and when the surf is just right, water pressure builds up within the lava tube and erupts through the narrow opening creating a special Hawaiian Geyser for your viewing pleasure.

Pass By: Makapu’u Point, Kalaniana’ole Hwy turnout above Makapu’u Beach, Oahu, HI 96795

Makapu’u Point Witness Waimanalo’s dramatic sea cliffs as we turn into Oahu’s windward side as we begin our journey to the North Shore of Oahu. Look off into the azure blue waters of the bay and you will see Oahu’s famous Manana Island also known as Rabbit island due to its Rabbit like shape.

Stop At: Tropical Farms (The Macadamia Nut Farm Outlet), 49-227 Kamehameha Hwy Ste A, Kaneohe, Oahu, HI 96744-5165

Hawaiian Coffee and Macadamia Nut Tastings After a beautiful drive along Oahu’s eastern coastline, our next stop is a local shop that finds itself tucked away under aged Banyan Trees with macadamia nut and delicious Kona coffee tastings, along with very tempting Hawaiian chocolates amongst other treats.

Stop At: Nu’uanu Pali, Oahu, HI

Nestled along the majestic cliffs of the Ko’olau Mountains on Oahu, the Pali Lookout presents travelers with awe-inspiring vistas of the island’s windward coast. Steeped in historical significance, this site marks the battleground where King Kamehameha I triumphed in his quest to unify the Hawaiian Islands. Embraced by sweeping winds and lush landscapes, the lookout offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage, making it an essential stop for any visitor to Oahu.

Stop At: Sunset Beach, Sunset Beach, Oahu, Hawaii

A change of pace from the crowded beaches of Waikiki, The infamous Sunset Beach on the North Shore offers tranquility and is the epitome of a beautiful Hawaiian Beach. However don’t lets the summer months fool you, during the winter months, swells of 30 to 40 feet can be seen from the safe confines of shore.

Stop At: Kahuku Farms, 56-800 Kamehameha Hwy, Kahuku, Oahu, HI 96731-2302

We stop at a North Shore Fruit stand where you can gorge on local fruits such as mangos, dragonfruit, pineapple or quench your thirst on a fresh coconut.

Stop At: Waimea Botanical Gardens, Oahu, 59-864 Kamehameha Hwy, Haleiwa, Oahu, HI 96712-8411

The exceptional botanical collections at Waimea Valley feature dozens of distinct gardens representing flora from different parts of the world. Examples include the Ogasawara Islands, Central and South America, Fiji, Guam, and the Mascarene Islands. Stroll through the Hawaiian collection and enjoy an assortment of plants found only in Hawai’i, many of which are rare and endangered. Many were brought here as seed or cutting from the places where they evolved. Waimea Waterfall is also a splendid highlight of the park. Guests can swim in the waterfall if they want. Lifeguards are on duty. Admission included in the cost of the ticket. Swimming is allowed at the waterfall. Please bring a bathing suit and towel if you wish to swim. Circle Island

Follow the coast all the way to the North Shore and return back to town through the center of the island

The circle island ride is a must do experience for experienced riders who have a motorcycle license*. Follow the coast around Diamond Head, past Hanauma Bay, Sandy Beach, Waimanalo, Kailua, through Kaneohe and along the Windward Side past the Polynesian Cultural Center and see the Seven Mile miracle from Sunset Beach to Haleiwa. Then head back down through the center of the island, past the Dole Plantation, Pearl Harbor, and into Honolulu to complete your epic trip through Downtown, Ala Moana and into Waikiki. Make sure to take your swimwear and sunscreen, because some of the world’s most beautiful beaches are along this route.

*Please note that you can do this ride on a moped, without a motorcycle license. It is a very long ride for a moped with a 49cc engine. The riding can become difficult at times and you may need to ride along the shoulder, since your rental won’t keep up with traffic. You will also have to avoid all of the major highways (We’ve included directions for mopeds below to help you navigate safely.). The ride is unforgettable, but also not for everybody, so please make your best judgement. Also, if you decide not to complete the Circle Island ride, you’ll already have completed the East Side ride, which is a must-see for all visitors to Oahu.

Circle Island Tour Route

DIRECTIONS:

  • Head towards the ocean on Kapahulu Ave.
  • Turn Left on Kalakaua Ave.

(Ride past the Waikiki Aquarium and the War Memorial on the right, and Kapiolani Park on the left. After the water fountain, continue straight and explore the historic homes on Coconut Ave. until it intersects Diamond Head Road)

  • Turn Right on Diamond Head Road

(Climb to the top of Diamond Head Road where views of local surfers and the Diamond Head Lighthouse await. Enjoy driving through the “Beverly Hills of Oahu” as Diamond Head Road becomes Kahala Ave.)

  • Turn Left onto the 72 (Kalanianaole Hwy) at the Stop Sign

(Stay on the bike path on the highway and be prepared to ride with some pretty fast traffic against strong winds. Please be aware of cars making right turns from the far right lane)

  • Continue on the 72 (Kalanianaole Hwy) for approximately 13 miles
  • Turn Left onto the 61 (Pali) Highway at the fork in the highway. You’ll see Castle Medical Center on the right as you turn onto the Pali
  • Turn Right onto the 83 (Kahekili) Highway towards Kaneohe
  • Continue onto the 830 and then back onto the 83 (Kamehameha) Highway to enjoy the scenic drive around the Northeastern coast of Oahu

( This 35 mile stretch of highway takes you out of mountainous, green Kaneohe and onto the oceanside stretch of the ride. You’ll ride through the picturesque towns of Hauula, Laie, Kahuku, and Pupukea. Please use caution as the 830 (Kahekili) Highway is largely a 2-lane road, so be aware of fast-moving traffic and pull over if there are cars waiting behind you. Enjoy the gorgeous views and drive with aloha!)

  • Turn Right at the Haleiwa North Shore sign to ride through Historic Haleiwa Town
  • As you exit Haleiwa at the traffic circle, take the 3rd exit to continue onto the 99 (Kamehameha) Highway

(You’ll pass the famous Dole Pineapple Plantation on the left as you ride into central Oahu)

  • Turn Left onto Wilikina Dr. to remain on the 99 (Kamehameha) Highway
  • At the H2 Junction, remain on Wilikina Dr. and then turn right to continue on the 99 (Kamehameha) Highway through Waipio and Mililani

(If you’re riding a scooter and have a motorcycle license, merge onto H2 to head back into Honolulu)

  • At the H1 Junction in Pearl City, turn left to continue on the 99 (Kamehameha) Highway and pass the Pearl Harbor Memorial as you head towards Honolulu
  • Take the exit for the 92 (Nimitz) Highway and continue onto Ala Moana Blvd.
  • Turn Right onto Kalakaua Ave. and follow it through the main Waikiki Strip
  • Turn Left onto Kapahulu Ave.
  • Turn Left onto Lemon Road to return to the shop

Circle Island Tour Of Oahu & Pearl Harbor From Maui, Kauai, Or The Big Island Features

Exhibits In The Pearl Harbor And Uss Arizona Memorial

Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor is a historic site and a significant landmark in American history. On December 7, 1941, it was the scene of an infamous surprise attack by the Japanese forces during World War II, leading to the United States' entry into the war. Today, the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center offers an opportunity to delve into the heart of the events that unfolded on that fateful day. The highlight is undoubtedly the USS Arizona Memorial, a hallowed site that stands above the sunken battleship, serving as a silent testament to the 1,177 crew members who lost their lives in the attack. Visiting Pearl Harbor is not only an educational experience but also an emotional journey into the past, reminding us of the courage and sacrifice of those who served.

Dole Pineapple Plantation Enoa

The Dole Pineapple Plantation

A symbol of Hawaii's vibrant agricultural history, this plantation offers a unique insight into the cultivation and processing of these tropical fruits. Here, you can venture into the world's largest maze, crafted from local flora, go on a Pineapple Express Train tour, or explore the Plantation Garden Tour to learn about various tropical crops. The Plantation is also home to a country store where you can indulge in a variety of pineapple-infused treats, including their famous Dole Whip, and shop for unique Hawaiian souvenirs.

Macadamia Nut Farm Shop

It's a haven for those seeking to sample and learn about the rich, delicious world of macadamia nuts, a native staple in Hawaiian agriculture. Following our engaging historical encounter, we embark on an extensive 120-mile adventure around the destination-rich island of Oahu. Additionally, we'll drop by numerous magnificent beaches, local farms, bustling food trucks, and markets. The landscapes of Þingvellir National Park create a beautiful and rare scenery

What is the Golden Circle?

The Golden Circle is the most famous of all scenic routes in Iceland and combines stunning landmarks and historically significant places in a circular sightseeing tour.

Its proximity to Reykjavík and the airport area, as well as the short drive between the sights make it convenient for everyone, to include the Golden Circle tour into their itinerary.

Whether you take only one or more days to explore the Golden Circle, you’ll experience some of the most stunning geological wonders, Iceland has to offer!

The Golden Circle and its highlights

The stunning Gullfoss waterfall Photo: Páll Jökull Pétursson

During the summer, Gullfoss waterfall bedazzles on average more than 2000 people per day. The popularity and attraction of the 'Golden Waterfall' lie in its unusual, cascading shape and in its being extremely photogenic from every angle and in every season.

On average 100.000 liters of glacial water from the river Hvítá plunge 31 meters into the Gullfossgljúfur canyon every second. Since the cold spray water does not stop for tourists, we recommend raincoats!

Gullfoss is open the whole year-round. In the winter, the trails to the lower viewing platforms are sometimes closed due to icy and snowy conditions. Check the road and conditions map on safetravel.is

Strokkur gushing up fountains of hot water @Ívar Sæland

Equally popular but significantly higher in temperature is the water in the geothermal area in Haukadalur. This is one of the very few places on earth, where one can closely observe active geysers. The famous Great Geysir, the geyser Strokkur and various kinds of hot springs, steam vents, and sulfurous mud pots can be explored.

While the Great Geysir barely spouts, the smaller geyser Strokkur reliably gushes its fountains of boiling hot water every 8-10 minutes up to 30 meters in the air. Have your camera ready and stay on the windside of the geyser!

Þingvellir National Park

rich-text-image

Þingvellir - the historical and geological treasure of Iceland

Þingvellir is the historical and geological treasure of Iceland, wrapped in scenic beauty.

From the age of settlement 930 AD until 1789 the Icelandic parliament Alþingi met here, and on the 17th of June 1944, Iceland proclaimed its independence from Denmark at this significant place. Since 2004, Þingvellir is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

In Þingvellir, the tectonic plates drift apart, the crevasses being visible in Almannagjá canyon as well as in Silfra, where it is possible to dive and snorkel between the continents .

The biggest natural lake in Iceland, Þingvallavatn, and the Öxaráfoss waterfall add to the scenic beauty of Þingvellir National Park.

More highlights along the way

The Golden Circle is mounted with big and small highlights and can be extended at will. More wonderful sights in the Golden Circle include the volcanic crater Kerið and the historic Bishop’s see Skálholt. The high amount of geothermal energy also supplies the numerous geothermal pools and greenhouses in the area. Find out more on Visit South Iceland
