Amsterdam Canal Tour | Rent a Grachten Boat

A Gay Couple Rental Canal Boat Tour Amsterdam with Boats4rent – A Gay City Weekend Amsterdam without a boat tour around the canals (so-called Grachten) of Amsterdam ? No way! Not only because it is very common in the Netherlands to have an own boat (or know someone who does). As soon as the sun comes out, everyone with a boat is on the canals, cruising around the canals, ordering pizza at the “boat drive-in” and is just enjoying the beauty of the gay-friendly Dutch capital, unique nature, and the Amstel River. Actually, for us, it is simply one of the best ways to explore and enjoy the biggest city of the Netherlands . Enjoy our review, tips, and information and experience the Canals of Amsterdam through a gay couple of men ‘s eyes.

Cruising around the Canals of Amsterdams

But how to organize a canal tour in Amsterdam ? Do it like the Dutch people and drive together with friends. We like to take the aluminum electric boats from boats4rent.nl. Starting from Amsterdam Westerpark, a map guides us through the narrow waterways, passing by beautiful Grachten houses and all the most important sights of Amsterdam. The goal of a 3-hour tour is the Amstel River with a stunning view of the Amstel Hotel, the Opera House of Amsterdam, and the busy traffic of Amsterdam’s biggest waterway.

Become an Amsterdam Canal Boat Captain

Since we don’t have an own a boat in Amsterdam, we like to rent one of the small, electronic boats from boats4rent at Westerpark Amsterdam. The ideal solution for travelers as well. Why? These boats are easy to navigate, they cannot drive speed up too fast, and they are suitable for at least 6 people. Bring some snacks, cold drinks, and a blanket for the late evening wind and sit down on your rental boat for at least 3 hours (or longer, if you prefer another time package) enjoying the stunning over the historic architecture of Amsterdam’s Grachten houses from a boat’s perspective. Simply a must-do for a trip to Amsterdam.

Things you need to know:

Things you need to know about driving a boat on the canals of Amsterdam: Be aware of the long, hard-to-navigate canal cruise boats! Smaller boats have to give way and are asked to drive on the right side close to the canal sides. Do you need a drivers license for a rental boat in Amsterdam? No, you don’t need a boat license for a boat shorter than 15 Meters or slower than 20 kilometers per hour. You are even allowed to stop the boat and go to a toilet or store as long as someone stays on the rental boat of boats4rent. Have a look at the time, since you have to go all the way back to Westerpark. The map of the waterways of Amsterdam shows you where you are allowed to drive and the distances with full speed back to the dock. And now, do it like the Dutch people do, or how we like to do it for a couple of hours together with our best friends, countless selfie options, and the real Dutch Amsterdam feeling.

A Journey through Gay Pride Amsterdam: Exploring the Vibrant Spectrum

Amsterdam unfolds into a dazzling canvas of rainbow colours every year, creating a colourful image of acceptance, love, and variety. This mesmerising display is the Gay Pride Amsterdam, a week-long festival that firmly establishes the Dutch capital as a global leader in pushing for LGBTQ+ rights.

Amsterdam Gay Pride

This year, a new chapter unfolds in Amsterdam’s storied history of Pride celebrations. Queer Amsterdam and the Stichting Pride Amsterdam Foundation are joining forces to present a renewed event: Queer & Pride Amsterdam. Taking place from 22nd July to 6th August 2023, this event is born out of a commitment to address the need for more representation, recognition, emancipation, and safety for those within the LGBTQ+ community who often have to strive harder. Both organisations will share responsibility for the programme, promising an inclusive and diverse experience for all attendees.

For 27 years, Amsterdam Gay Pride has been a beacon of hope and unity for the LGBTQ+ community in Amsterdam. Its importance extends far beyond its festive atmosphere. It stands for the freedom to be who you are and to love who you want — core principles that remain unchanged, irrespective of how the event’s interpretation and realisation may evolve.

Amsterdam Pride is an affirmation of freedom, a testament to the city’s openness, and a jubilant celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. Through its colourful canal parade, educational events, and countless parties, it creates an atmosphere of inclusivity that brings together not only the LGBTQ+ community, but also allies and visitors from around the world.

Furthermore, Amsterdam Pride plays a critical role in raising awareness about the LGBTQ+ community and the issues it faces. As we embark on this deep dive into the essence of Amsterdam Pride, we’ll explore its historical and contemporary significance, celebrate the triumphs of the LGBTQ+ community, and look towards a future filled with even more progress and understanding.

The History of Gay Pride Amsterdam

In order to fully appreciate the significance and magnitude of Queer & Pride Amsterdam, it is crucial to understand the roots from which it grew. The history the Gay Pride Amsterdam is a rich tapestry interwoven with resilience, defiance, and an indomitable spirit of unity that has driven the evolution of this event over the decades.

The Roots of Pride in Amsterdam

Amsterdam Pride had its spectacular premiere in 1996 as the ‘Amsterdam Gay Games,’ an event intended to coincide with the Olympic Games in Atlanta. It was a response to the LGBTQ+ community’s rising need to provide a safe and joyous environment. The festival quickly distinguished itself in its debut year with a distinctive feature that quickly became a hallmark of Amsterdam Pride: the Canal Parade, in which lavishly adorned boats floated along Amsterdam’s historic canals, conveying messages of love, acceptance, and pride.

Significant Milestones and Events Gay Pride Amsterdam

Amsterdam Gay Pride has reached significant milestones throughout the years, contributing to its standing as one of the world’s most prominent LGBTQ+ events. The name was changed from ‘Amsterdam Gay Games’ to ‘Amsterdam Pride’ in 1998 to represent a more inclusive mindset that included the whole LGBTQ+ community.

When then-Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende delivered a speech in favour of Amsterdam Pride in 2006, it became the world’s first Pride event to get support from a country’s head of government.

In 2013, Amsterdam Pride marked another milestone by hosting the first-ever ‘EuroPride’ that featured a Human Rights Concert, highlighting the event’s commitment not just to celebration, but also to advocating for equality and human rights.

In 2020, despite the challenges presented by the global pandemic, Amsterdam Pride demonstrated resilience by transitioning to a virtual format. This allowed the event to continue spreading its message of love and acceptance, even in difficult times.

Amsterdam Canal Parade

These significant milestones demonstrate how Amsterdam Pride has consistently pushed boundaries and evolved in response to the needs and aspirations of the LGBTQ+ community. It underscores the event’s unyielding commitment to promoting freedom, love, and acceptance, principles that remain at the heart of the celebration as we usher in the era of Queer & Pride Amsterdam.

Experiencing Gay Pride Amsterdam 2023

Immersing oneself in the gay pride Amsterdam 2023 is an experience that transcends the boundaries of a typical festival or parade. It’s an exploration of love, acceptance, diversity, and unity that permeates every corner of the city.

A Walk Through the Pride Parade: Key Highlights and Attractions

The canal parade.

The Canal Parade is the crowning achievement of Amsterdam Pride. Decorated boats, each more colourful than the one before it, adorn the city’s ancient canals, transporting passionate entertainers and conveying messages of love and acceptance. These boats symbolise numerous LGBTQ+ organisations, groups, and companies that support the cause. The city transforms into one enormous, exuberant celebration as spectators line the canal borders, connecting everyone present in the spirit of Pride.

The Pride Walk

The Pride Walk is an uplifting event that allows people and groups to openly show their identities and support. Participants march across the city with banners and messages in hand, creating a stirring panorama of courage, perseverance, and acceptance. This gathering highlights that, while much has been accomplished, the struggle towards equality and understanding continues.

Street Parties

The street parties of Amsterdam Pride are also well-known. A variety of parties featuring music, dancing, and an infectious sense of pleasure are held in various neighbourhoods. During Pride, there is a party for everyone, from the exciting gatherings at Dam Square to the fantastic events in the Reguliersdwarsstraat.

Milkshake Festival

The Milkshake Festival , a staple of Amsterdam Pride, exemplifies the event’s commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. This music event encourages people to express themselves freely, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or race. Milkshake is a celebration of being genuine to oneself, with various performances and a strong message of love and tolerance.

Arts and Culture

Gay pride Amsterdam also values the arts, with several cultural events held across the city. In public places, art installations inspired by the LGBTQ+ movement promote contemplation and debate. This cultural enrichment is further aided through theatre performances, film screenings, and exhibitions that provide varied views on LGBTQ+ lives and history.

Amsterdam Gay Pride, in all of its forms, fosters an environment in which acceptance and diversity are not just recognised, but also accepted. Each event, each statement of pride adds to the sense of solidarity and joy. With the arrival of Queer & Pride Amsterdam, we anticipate even more vivid and inclusive festivities, ushering in a new chapter in the history of this important event.

Capturing the Atmosphere: Expressions of Pride in Public Spaces

Boats on the canal

As the city embraces the gay Pride Amsterdam, expressions of support and acceptance can be seen across Amsterdam. The colours of the rainbow spill over from the parade into the cityscape, adorning buildings, street corners, shops, and homes. Flags flutter from windows, banners are draped across facades, and even the city’s trams don rainbow hues, all contributing to an environment that breathes acceptance and diversity.

Art installations inspired by the LGBTQ+ movement pop up across the city, serving as poignant reminders of the struggle for rights and the continuing fight for equality. Public spaces such as parks become arenas for discussion and discourse, hosting talks, debates, and educational events about LGBTQ+ history, rights, and issues.

In Amsterdam during Pride, every street corner, every square, every park, and every canal breathes the spirit of the festival. The atmosphere is one of unity and jubilation, a city-wide celebration of the right to love and the freedom to be oneself. As we look forward to Queer & Pride Amsterdam, we anticipate these expressions of pride to be even more vibrant and inclusive, marking a new chapter in this historic celebration.

Amsterdam Gay Pride Beyond the Parade

While Amsterdam Pride is an annual event that highlights the LGBTQ+ community, it’s vital to recognise that the Pride spirit lives on in the city all year. Amsterdam’s dedication to promoting a welcoming, inclusive environment for the LGBTQ+ community extends beyond the summer parade and festivities.

Close up from walking people with rainbow coloured socks.

Year-Round LGBTQ+ Venues and Initiatives in Amsterdam

All year long, Amsterdam is home to a plethora of venues that cater particularly to the LGBTQ+ community. There are locations where people may express themselves freely and securely at any time of year, from lively taverns in the Reguliersdwarsstraat and Zeedijk to nightclubs like Club Church and Exit Cafe .

Furthermore, Amsterdam has a number of projects that support and promote LGBTQ+ rights and welfare. COC Amsterdam , the world’s longest operating LGBTQ+ organisation, offers a variety of services ranging from youth support to pushing for policy reforms. The Amsterdam Gay Men’s Chorus , Transgender Netwerk Nederland , and LGBT Asylum Support are just a few of the city’s many activities.

How the Spirit of Pride is Kept Alive Throughout the Year

The Pride spirit pervades the city’s culture and ethos even beyond the summer festivities. Throughout the year, educational programmes and awareness initiatives are held to promote understanding and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community. Public conversations, exhibits, film screenings, and seminars provide venues for people to share their stories, raise their visibility, and address continuing issues.

The essential values of Pride – acceptance, variety, and freedom – are woven into the fabric of Amsterdam society. The city’s dedication to these ideals may be seen in its regulations, public places, and active LGBTQ+ community.

As we anticipate Queer & Pride Amsterdam, we celebrate not just the major summer celebration, but also the everlasting spirit of Pride that beats in the city’s heart all year. From colourful venues that provide safe places to programmes that fight diligently for equality and inclusion, Amsterdam’s welcome of the LGBTQ+ community is more than just a festival. It is a lifetime commitment, a tribute to the city’s commitment to creating an atmosphere in which everyone is free to be themselves and love who they choose.

The Colours of the Rainbow

As we journey through the history and spirit of Amsterdam Pride, one element stands out as a universal symbol of the LGBTQ+ community and its celebrations: the Pride rainbow. Bursting with color, the rainbow flag is more than just a vibrant spectacle; it carries profound symbolism and plays an essential role during Pride.

Symbolism of the Pride Rainbow

People marching during the Gay Pride Amsterdam

The rainbow flag, also known as the Pride flag, was first designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978. Each of the six colours represents a different aspect of life and human nature. Red stands for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for serenity, and purple for spirit. This rainbow of colours together symbolises diversity, unity, and acceptance, embodying the ethos of the LGBTQ+ community and its movement.

In recent years, variations of the original rainbow flag have been introduced to further highlight the diversity within the LGBTQ+ community. For example, the Progress Pride Flag, designed by Daniel Quasar in 2018, adds a five-coloured chevron to the classic six-striped rainbow flag. This addition includes black and brown stripes to represent marginalised LGBTQ+ communities of color, along with the colours of the Transgender Pride Flag (light blue, light pink, and white).

The Importance of Colour during Pride Celebrations

During Pride celebrations, the symbolism of the rainbow extends beyond the flag. The streets of Amsterdam transform into a vibrant tableau, adorned with these colors, demonstrating the city’s commitment to celebrating diversity and fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity.

Each color serves as a visual proclamation of the core principles of Pride: freedom, acceptance, and love. They remind attendees of the collective journey of the LGBTQ+ community, celebrating the progress that has been made while highlighting the ongoing fight for equality.

During Queer & Pride Amsterdam, these colours will once again take center stage, reflecting the multifaceted identities within the LGBTQ+ community. They will not only add to the aesthetic appeal of the event but also serve as a reminder of Pride’s overarching mission: to embrace diversity, promote acceptance, and encourage unabashed self-expression. Thus, the colours of the rainbow remain an integral part of the celebrations, a testament to the enduring spirit and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community.

Final Thoughts: Looking Ahead to Gay Pride 2023 Amsterdam

Amsterdam Pride is more than a festival; it’s a reflection of a city’s commitment to equality, acceptance, and love. As we have journeyed through its rich history, its vibrant celebrations, and its year-round initiatives, we see a city that not only welcomes diversity but actively champions it. With the advent of The Gay Pride 2023 Amsterdam, the city is set to continue this tradition, infusing it with renewed vigor and inclusivity. As we look forward to the festivities, we also acknowledge the importance of keeping the spirit of Pride alive every day.

Because, at its heart, Pride is about celebrating who we are, who we love, and standing together in the face of adversity. Amsterdam, with its vibrant LGBTQ+ venues, its tireless initiatives, and its proud citizens, does just that, reminding us all that love is love, irrespective of gender or sexuality. So here’s to a successful Queer & Pride Amsterdam 2023 and to a future where we continue to honour and celebrate our diverse identities, not just during Pride, but every day of the year.

Pride Amsterdam

Pride Amsterdam is also popularly referred to as Gay Pride. Because it no longer does justice to the variety of the participants, the term “Gay” has been removed from the original name. There are about 300 events in Amsterdam during the Pride, culminating in the Canal Parade.

Spectacular Canal Parade 2022

Pride Amsterdam 2022 takes place from 30 July to 7 August lasts 9 days. There is a lot going on in the city. Theatre, dance, comedy, performances and of course on Saturday 6 August the Canal Parade. During this boat parade through the Amsterdam canals you will see about 80 beautifully decorated boats passing by. The people on those boats are spectacularly dressed and a huge crowd watches the festive event from the side.

A View from the water

It is also possible to float in the canals with a boat , so you can watch the Canal Parade up close. For this you need an expensive vignette and a temporary membership. For boats that do not have these, the area is hermetically sealed off.

Rules for renting a boat during Gay Pride Amsterdam

During Gay Pride Amsterdam, the canals are filled with boats and hundreds of thousands of visitors. This means that at 6pm the canals and streets no longer look as tidy as they did before. We believe that celebrating should not be an excuse for anti-social behaviour. Therefore, we would like to remind you of the rules.

  • Do not throw rubbish overboard into the water or on the dock. There is a special waste service where you can dispose of your waste.
  • Do not play music, this is forbidden! On the canals, music is played on high quality sound systems. Your tunes are therefore not only unnecessary but also prohibited.
  • The captain must stay sober. So decide in advance who will steer the boat.
  • Do not throw water or other stuff at the parade boats.
  • You may not swim or jump into the water.
  • Do not enter houseboats without permission of the owner.
  • Drink in moderation, it’s a long day.
  • Put on your wildest outfit! It would be a shame to leave it hanging in the closet any longer.

The normal boating rules still apply. Please read them carefully.

Rent a boat for the Gay Pride

Why would you rent a boat for the gay pride.

The Canal Parade on the first Saturday of August is the highlight of the annual Gay Pride festival. The parade takes place in the afternoon and follows a fixed route on the Amsterdam canals and the Amstel river.

An immense crowd comes to join the party and to admire the 80 festively decorated theme boats and their celebrating crew. The very best up and close experience can be had from your own boat parked along the route. However, the organization of the Gay Pride only allows a limited number of spectator boats. If you rent a boat from us, the entree ticket linked to a specific place along the route will be included.

Boat hire Gay Pride Amsterdam

How to rent your boat for the annual Gay Pride on the Amsterdam canals?

Only full day rentals.

For the Gay Pride you can only rent your boat for the entire day. The reason for that is that you have to find your parking spot well before the start of the parade. That’s why you have to pick up your boat in time: anytime between 10 and 12 AM. It’s fine if one or two of your crew pick up the boat and the rest of your crew gets on board later on. You can return your boat after the parade, anytime between 4 and 6 PM.

The rate for the Gay Pride

The full day rental rate for the Gay Pride is € 299 per boat, including the necessary permit worth € 92,50. This is the best Gay Pride boat rental deal you will find in Amsterdam.

More info and reservations

For more information about renting a boat for the Gay Pride please send an email to [email protected] . You can also book online right away. Please select the first Saturday of August on the calendar. Since the Gay Pride is always fully booked well in advance, we recommend to book early.

Canal Parade

The famous Canal Parade returns on Saturday, August 3rd 2024.

Oosterdok – Nieuwe Herengracht – Amstel – Prinsengracht – Westerdok

Participants

Interested parties wishing to participate in the Canal Parade 2024 were able to register between January 8th – February 1st 2024 and submit their concept. After the registration was closed, a ballot committee decided which 80 applications are the most beautiful and best fitted to the theme ( TOGETHER ). On February 11th, during our annual kickoff event, we announced the 80 participants for the Canal Parade, which will be held on August 3rd 2024.

Want to know who’s participating this year? See here our Canal Parade participants 2024 .

Download: Participant Regulations 2024 (Only in Dutch available)

Because in recent years there has been a discussion about the orientation and social involvement of different participants, a new classification of the participant categories has been made. The new classification does more justice to everybody’s part in the struggle for the emancipation of LGBTIs and the support for our Pride.

Boats along the route

Due to the increasing number of visitors who want to join the Pride with their boat and the limited space available, all boats along the route need a Pride Vignette. If you want to take your boat to the Pride to spend time with family or friends, you can do so with a boat up to <10 meters. This ‘new’ regulation prevents parties who do not contribute to the organization from celebrating their own party at our event and thereby also causing the most inconvenience. The sale of the Pride vignettes will start on July 1st 2024 via www.botenparade.nl .

In 2018 we established a ‘ Pride Business Club ‘. Companies that are not directly associated with the LGBT community can only participate in the canal parade if they are members. This way, we want to involve them more in the emancipation part of Pride and at the same time create a network of professionals that support us both financially and in terms of content. A maximum of two contacts are registered per membership and will be invited to the meetings and activities. Membership costs € 2.000 excl. VAT per year. Of this amount, 50% is intended for the continuity of the organization and 50% is spent on the organization of substantive activities. See more info at  www.pridebusinessclub.nl .

In Amsterdam, we use the toilet!

As an (event) organization we’re always trying to set up as many toilet areas as possible. Sometimes you need to walk a bit further to find one and of course we understand this could be an issue if you really need to go. But please keep it in the toilet, don’t urinate on the streets, against doorways, cars or anything. It’s not respectful to the residents and owners. So keep it decent and find one of our toilet areas! Besides that, you need to know it’s illegal by law in The Netherlands. If the police catches you, you’ll receive a fine of €140 euro
