Ralph Stanley is a legendary bluegrass musician hailing from McClure, Virginia, USA. After a career spanning nearly seven decades, he has rightfully become one of the most iconic and inspirational artists of the genre.

In a way, every country artist would kill to have Ralph Stanley’s upbringing. He’s a true country boy, born and raised in rural Southwest Virginia where he lives to this day, and one wonders whether the likes of Marcus Mumford and chums wish for that kind of birthplace just to give their music that little bit more authenticity. Truth be told, however, it isn’t authenticity or upbringing that makes Stanley so special, it’s the music, plain and simple.

Stanley first took up the banjo in his mid-teens. His mother played and so did all her 11 siblings, so when Stanley became interested in singing the folk songs he picked up from his father, she bought a banjo off her sister for him. He got him started on it and showed him the basics but he picked it up faster than anyone could predict, soon it was all he could think about. Unfortunately, something quite big would initially get in the way.

Stanley graduated from high school on the 2nd of May 1945, and a mere two weeks later he was conscripted into the army. That’s right; he had to take time out of his music career to fight in the Second World War. Very briefly, granted, but he still served for a just over a year after it ended. However when he got back it was all about the music from then on. According to Stanley, when he came home from the army he was picked up by his father from the station he arrived at, and taken to a radio station to sing in a live session before he even got home.

In 1946, he formed The Clinch Mountain Boys with his brother Carter Stanley, and it was in this group that he found his first national success. By the time they started writing their own material they signed to Colombia Records as The Stanley Brothers, backed by The Clinch Mountain Boys. So it went for twenty years of steady success, until Carter tragically passed away in 1966.

Luckily enough for country music as a whole, Ralph decided to carry on as a solo artist along with the Clinch Mountain Boys. His career was steady and succesful for decades after that until his work on the soundtrack for the 2000 Coen Brothers film O Brother, Where Art Thou? made him an unlikely household name. His performance of “O Death” on that very album garnered him a Grammy award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.

The good doctor still tours regularly even as he pushes 90 and his band are better than ever. With the commercial clout of country music at an all-time high, there has never been a better time to discover or re-discover one of country music’s true innovators.

We give a lot of praise and accolades to baby boomer rock stars still touring (ish) while pushing sixty and in some extreme cases seventy. If Ralph Stanley cared enough to seek out all this talk (which I strongly doubt he would), I’d be interested to see what his reaction would be. Since in three years, Ralph Stanley will be ninety years old, and he’s still touring at a rate of knots which would put many artists a good twenty five to thirty years younger than him to shame. Not only that, but he’s also singing with a range and power that belies his years and while he might leave the banjo playing to members of his backing band The Clinch Mountain Boys, I think it’s pretty clear that he’s earned the right do that after being one of the most influential banjo players in country music for nearly sixty years. Multiple generations of country singers, players and songwriters sing the McClure, Virginia natives praises as one of the true greats of the genre, and of American music as a whole, and the best way to see how justified they are in doing so is to see him do what he does best. Highly recommended.

Many artists dream of a career with longevity of a couple of decades at least as the changing face of the music industry means people can rise to prominence and fall back beneath the radar in a space of a couple of years. Enter blues grass icon Ralph Stanley who's career has lasted a staggering seven decades and at the age of 88, he continues to take to stage albeit infrequently.

This man is an absolute legend in the genres of blues grass, country and music in general. It seems as though his music and performance has been a life elixir of sorts as Ralph has retained both his wit, confidence and above all musical ability. He picks at his banjo with great speeds and retains the lyrics to every song played tonight. He endearingly tells the crowds that he has enjoyed a wonderful life and feels blessed to share his music with thousands over the years. This of course receives a deafening round of applause and leads nicely into a finale of 'Hemlocks and Primroses'.

I was really disappointed that Dr. Stanley did perform more but I completely understand it was a health issue. I hope you get to feeling better and spreading that unique bluegrass voice across the hills.

Ralph Stanley was brave

First thing after reading the obituary for bluegrass patriarch and fellow Virginian Ralph Stanley, I played my own banjo and reflected on Stanley’s life and accomplishments. One detail not mentioned was that he recorded an endorsement for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama in 2008, which ran heavily on AM country radio stations in rural south-side Virginia prior to the election.

This act of courage on Stanley’s part was with the full awareness of the risk he was taking both professionally and personally by endorsing an African-American Democrat in a part of the state traditionally unfriendly to both. The endorsement swayed a considerable number of white voters, many of whom never second-guessed that decision to renounce their “heritage” of racism, bigotry and segregation.

Since 2008, Virginia has become a reliably blue state, whose Democratic governor recently signed legislation restoring voting rights to convicted felons who have done their time and have paid their debt to society. A disproportionate number of those Virginia ex-cons who can now vote are black men. When Virginia’s white governor signed that law, one can imagine he was emboldened by what Stanley did back in 2008.
