The lifelong home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, America’s 32nd President. Purchased by Roosevelt’s father in 1867, the home was a large but simple Italianate farmhouse. By 1915, Franklin and his mother, Sara, had completed extensive renovations that included the stucco and fieldstone exterior, the addition of two large wings, and a columned portico. Interior decorations reflect the lifestyle favored by this “old money” family. Inherited by FDR upon his mother’s death in 1941, the house and much of the estate were transferred to the federal government in 1945 at the President’s request. Its interior remains as it was during Roosevelt’s lifetime. The grounds feature flower gardens, outbuildings, and miles of walking trails. The Rose Garden contains the graves of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.

How to Visit the FDR House Hyde Park, New York- The Adventuring Millennial

How to Visit the FDR House Hyde Park, New York

How to Visit the FDR House Hyde Park, New York- The Adventuring Millennial

Did you know you could visit the home of FDR just a few hours outside of New York City?

Honestly, I didn’t until recently. But once I found out I knew I had to make the day trip! I love to visit historical sites whenever I can. Anyone else with me on that?

If you are thinking about visiting the Franklin D. Roosevelt House in Hyde Park, keep reading. I’ll cover everything you need to know to make the most of your FDR House Hyde Park day trip!

By the way, here are two other posts you might want to check out:

Everything You Need to Know to Plan Your FDR House Hyde Park Day Trip

Before we go any further, let’s discuss the basics.

The sites we are focusing on in this post are the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site and Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum .

Springwood is the actual name of the FDR Home. The National Parks Service runs this site and you can take a ranger-led tour of the home.

The FDR Presidential Library & Museum are on the same grounds as Springwood. The National Archives (not National Parks Service) runs the library and museum. You can take a self-guided tour of the museum. The library is really just a research space and isn’t open on the weekends.

You will need to purchase two separate tickets- 1 for the house and 1 for the museum. We will go into more detail in the Cost section later in this post.

Franklin D. Roosevelt served as the 32nd president of the United States from 1933-1945. His time in office spanned the Great Depression and WWII. FDR is the only US president elected to four terms. Many people consider him one of the greatest presidents in American history.

FDR served as a member of the New York Senate, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and Governor of New York before becomming president.

Franklin D. Roosevelt married Eleanor Roosevelt in 1905. She’s known as the “First Lady of the World” was a prominent political figure and activist. Eleanor Roosevelt became a United States Delegate to the United Nations General Assembly in 1945. ER was a prolific writer and throughout her life, she wrote 27 books and 8,000 columns.

The FDR House and Museum are located in Hyde Park, New York:

4097 Albany Post Rd, Hyde Park, NY 12538

How to Get Here

The FDR House in Hyde Park is about 90 miles outside of midtown Manhattan. If you are traveling here from the city without a car, the best route is to take a Hudson Line Metro-North train to Poughkeepsie. Get on this train at Grand Central or Harlem 125. (Plan your route here .) You can purchase your tickets at the station or with the MTA eTix app .

If you arrive by train, you will reach the Poughkeepsie station, which is about 5 miles from the FDR House in Hyde Park. At this point, you could take an Uber or Lyft the rest of the way. Or, if you visit from Monday-Saturday you could take a bus operated by Dutchess County . The bus costs $1.25 one way and runs 6 minutes after the hour from 8:06 am to 7:06 pm.

For those of you with a car, getting here is very easy. It’s about an hour and a 45-minute drive from Manhattan. Plus, the FDR House has a large and free parking lot. Since I don’t have a car, I would normally have taken the train for this day trip. But, I happened to check Auto Slash and found a great last-minute deal on a rental car. So you might want to check that, too! Having the car was really nice because I could easily add a few stops in Hyde Park and Poughkeepsie to my day trip.

You can purchase a joint ticket to tour the FDR Home and to visit the Presidential Library + Museum for $20. This ticket is valid for two consecutive days. Children 15 years and younger are free.

If you plan to visit during a National Parks free day, just know that the museum will still cost $10 since it is operated by the National Archives, not the National Parks Service. Also, if you have an America The Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreations Lands Pass you will get into the house for free but will still have to pay the $10 for the museum.

You can purchase your tickets and sign up for a house tour in person. You cannot purchase these online.

fdr house tour tickets

The FDR House is generally open year-round, 7-days a week except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day. The house can only be accessed from a tour and these are offered seasonally ( check the website for current tour hours).

The FDR House will be closed from April 1, 2020- at least October 31, 2020 for major renovations. You can still visit the grounds and museum during this time, but house tours won’t be offered.

The FDR Presidential Library and Museum is open daily:

  • November – March: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
  • April – October: 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day

The FDR Presidental Library research room is open Monday-Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

What to Expect

fdr house tour tickets

When you arrive at the FDR House Hyde Park you will see a large visitor’s center. Purchase your tickets for the house and museum (or just the museum if the house is closed) inside the visitor’s center.

Before or after your tour, explore the museum, walk the grounds, or watch the film A Rendezvous With History in the visitor center. (I actually thought this was a pretty great introduction to the day!).

When it’s time for your tour to start, you’ll gather with your guide and about 50-other people in the visitor’s center. You’ll then spend the next hour learning about FDR, ER, and touring the house.

Should you still visit while the house is closed? Absolutely! Honestly, I spent most of my time at the museum anyways! You can still walk the grounds to see the house and there are some other fascinating sites nearby that you can add to your day trip (more on that later!)

Good to Know

  • Backpacks are not allowed in the house.
  • You can take pictures (but the flash has to be off).
  • House tours do sell out and can only be purchased in person. Arrive early to secure your spot.
  • From April 1, 2020 – October 31, 2020, the house will be closed for renovations. You can still walk the grounds and tour the museum which is well worth the trip!

What to do at the FDR House Hyde Park

fdr house tour tickets

The main things to explore at the FDR House Hyde Park historic site are Springwood (the FDR House) and the FDR Presidential Library and Museum. But, there are a few other sites including FDR’s Top Cottage, Eleanor Roosevelt’s Val-Kill, and the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site.

With just a 1-day trip, I would recommend focusing on Springwood and the FDR Presidential Library and Museum. But, since Springwood will be closed for a few months in 2020, you could replace this with a visit to one of the other sites!

Springwood is FDR’s home and one of the main reasons visitors travel to this site. You can take a ranger-led tour of the house to see where FDR was born and lived throughout his adult life. Tours are available on a first-come-first-serve basis and can only be scheduled in person at the visitor’s center. From April 1-October 31, 2020 the house will be closed for renovations .

FDR Presidential Library & Museum

In addition to Springwood, the Presidential Library & Museum is a major draw for this historic site. The museum is filled with artifacts and exhibits explaining the 12 years of FDR’s presidency. Honestly, I spent most of my time in the museum and I think it is well worth the visit even while the house is closed.

Val-Kill was Eleanor Roosevelt’s retreat and the house she lived in after FDR passed away. This is the only National Historic Site dedicated to a first lady. You can take a guided tour of Val-Kill to learn more about the fascinating life of ER.

Top Cottage

This was FDR’s retreat and a place he could escape the crowds who often surrounded him at Springwood. Also, unlike Springwood, this house was wheelchair accessible and he could be more independent in this home. The house is open for tours Monday-Friday during the summer season.

Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site

This 54-room mansion was owned by Frederick William Vanderbilt and his wife Louise Holmes Anthony. This was established as a national historic site to serve as a place to discuss the lifestyles of the rich and famous of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Gravesites

Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt are buried in the rosegarden just outside Springwood. You can visit and pay your respects while you tour the grounds.

What to do in Hyde Park

After visiting the FDR house and other historic sites in Hyde Park, here are a few other things to check out:

  • The Culinary Institute of America – Visitors are welcome to tour the campus of this private college that specializes in a culinary and pastry arts education. You can take a student-led tour Monday-Friday. You can also dine at one of the CIA’s restaurants .
  • Hyde Park Brewing Company – This is a small craft brewery and restaurant near the FDR house. Stop here for a quick and easy meal before visiting the house or museum!

What to do in Poughkeepsie

fdr house tour tickets

If you want to explore Poughkeepsie a bit, here are a few suggestions:

  • Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park – This unique park is a 1.28-mile bridge that crosses the Hudson River. This park was made from a restored 1889 railroad bridge. Take a nice walk over the bridge to enjoy some views over the water.
  • Locust Grove – If you want to tour another historic home, visit Locust Grove, an Italianate mansion with sprawling grounds. The painter and inventor Samuel F. B. Morse built this as his summer home in 1850.
  • The Crafted Kup – When you need a pick-me-up, don’t skip The Crafted Kup. This is a large cafe with a long menu. The highlight for me? The latte flight!
  • Cocina Oaxaquena – For delicious and authentic Mexican food, check out Cocina Oaxaquena. The menu has plenty of Oaxacan dishes plus classics from other parts of Mexico.

I hope my post helped as you plan your day trip to the FDR House Hyde Park site!

Take a look inside Franklin D. Roosevelt's 21,000-square-foot mansion where he entertained royals and world leaders

  • President Franklin D. Roosevelt maintained a lifelong connection with Springwood, his family home.
  • He was raised at the property in Hyde Park, New York, and hosted dignitaries there as president.
  • Measuring about 21,000 square feet, Springwood has 49 rooms and eight bathrooms.

Insider Today

President Franklin D. Roosevelt's estate in Hyde Park, New York, is the only place in the US where a president was born, maintained a connection throughout his life, and is buried, according to the National Park Service .

Widely regarded as one of the most influential US presidents , Roosevelt was elected in 1932 and led the country through the Great Depression and World War II. Known for expansive government programs such as the New Deal , he died in office while serving an unprecedented fourth term in 1945.

Roosevelt's 21,000-square-foot family home, an Italianate-style villa known as Springwood, is open to the public as part of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park. Everything inside is original to the home.

Take a look inside the historic site.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt's home, known as Springwood, is in Hyde Park, New York.

fdr house tour tickets

The Vanderbilt family's 45,000-square-foot Gilded Age mansion is also in Hyde Park, which is about 95 miles from New York City.

It's located on the grounds of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum.

fdr house tour tickets

The National Park Service operates both the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum and the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, while the National Archives manages the library's collections.

The National Park Service offers 40-minute guided tours of Springwood from May through October. Tickets cost $15 each and are sold in person on a first-come, first-serve basis.

As I began my walk to Springwood, I passed bronze statues of Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt.

fdr house tour tickets

The statues were modeled after a 1933 photograph of the Roosevelts at their Hyde Park home.

A park ranger told me to follow the sign for the stables to reach Roosevelt's home.

fdr house tour tickets

Further along the path, I began to see signs for Springwood, which is located next to the stables.

The stables still featured the names of the Roosevelt family's horses.

fdr house tour tickets

Roosevelt was an avid equestrian and continued riding even after his legs became paralyzed due to polio.

The tour started outside Springwood as a park ranger spoke about the history of the home and the Roosevelt family.

fdr house tour tickets

Roosevelt's father, James Roosevelt, was a Harvard-educated lawyer who earned his fortune as a businessman for various railroad and coal companies. He purchased the original farmhouse on the property in 1867 and named it "Springwood."

In 1915, Roosevelt and Eleanor added two stone wings and most of the third floor to make more room for their six children.

The guide also pointed out a front portico that resembled the South Portico of the White House.

fdr house tour tickets

"Perhaps a little political foreshadowing?" he said.

The Entrance Hall was decorated with prints from Roosevelt's naval collection and editorial cartoons from the 18th century.

fdr house tour tickets

Roosevelt served as assistant secretary of the Navy under President Woodrow Wilson. His fondness for Navy ships was evident in the decor throughout Springwood.

The Entrance Hall also featured Roosevelt's boyhood bird collection and a bronze statue of him at age 29.

fdr house tour tickets

As a child, Roosevelt collected birds and had them stuffed in order to study them up close.

The bronze statue depicts Roosevelt in 1911 when he was serving his first term in the New York State Senate.

In the Dining Room, Roosevelt sat at the head of the table in the seat pulled out on the left.

fdr house tour tickets

The small round table in the back of the room was the kids' table.

After dinner, guests would move to the Dresden Room, which functioned as a sitting room.

fdr house tour tickets

The room is named for the Dresden chandelier and sconces that Roosevelt's father brought back from Dresden, Germany.

A foldable ramp made the stairs leading into the Library accessible for Roosevelt's wheelchair.

fdr house tour tickets

At 39 years old, Roosevelt was diagnosed with polio and became paralyzed from the waist down. He didn't want people to know that he used a wheelchair, so the ramp could be folded up and hidden away when guests were present.

When Roosevelt took business meetings at Springwood, his aides positioned him in an armchair and put a stack of papers in his lap to give him a plausible reason not to stand when his guests arrived.

In the Library, Roosevelt met with world leaders and dignitaries.

fdr house tour tickets

Roosevelt's famous guests included King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother), Prince Frederik and Princess Ingrid of Denmark, Prince Olav and Princess Martha of Norway, and Winston Churchill.

The room also featured a portrait of Roosevelt painted by Ellen Emmet Rand.

fdr house tour tickets

Roosevelt sat for the portrait after he was elected to his first term as president in 1932.

The tour continued upstairs with the Pink Room, which functioned as a guest room.

fdr house tour tickets

King George VI and Winston Churchill slept in this room during their visits to Hyde Park.

Another guest room was used by his political advisors.

fdr house tour tickets

Louis Howe and Harry Hopkins, two of Roosevelt's close political advisors, stayed in this room.

The Chintz Room was also used as a guest room for important visitors.

fdr house tour tickets

Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, Russian pianist Madam Knavage, and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, stayed in the Chintz Room during their time at Springwood.

Roosevelt was born in the Blue Room on January 30, 1882.

fdr house tour tickets

His father, James Roosevelt, wrote in his diary on the night of Roosevelt's birth that he was a "splendid, large baby boy" who weighed 10 pounds. Everything in the Blue Room is original, including the mattress Roosevelt was born on.

James and his wife, Sara Roosevelt, slept in the Blue Room. After James' death, Sara moved into another room down the hall when the home was renovated in 1915, bringing her furniture with her. The Blue Room was then redecorated and repurposed as a guest room.

Sara requested that the original furniture be moved back into the Blue Room after her death to restore it to the way it looked when Roosevelt was born.

Growing up, Roosevelt slept in this bedroom until he married Eleanor in 1905.

fdr house tour tickets

When the Roosevelts had children of their own, the oldest son living at home slept here.

The hallway leading to the primary bedrooms included a unique piece of decor: a mirror mounted on a 45-degree angle.

fdr house tour tickets

The Secret Service used the mirror to monitor activity down the hall and around the front of the house.

Roosevelt's mother, Sara Roosevelt, slept in a bedroom at the end of the hall.

fdr house tour tickets

Roosevelt's father, James, died in 1900, while Sara lived for another 41 years. She moved from the Blue Room into this room after the home's 1915 renovation.

Eleanor moved into a smaller bedroom connected to Roosevelt's room after he became sick with polio.

fdr house tour tickets

The space was originally intended to be a morning room.

After Roosevelt's death in 1945, Eleanor moved to Val-Kill, a cottage she built with friends Nancy Cook and Marion Dickerman. Located around 2.5 miles from Springwood, the property is now known as the Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site.

Roosevelt's bedroom windows featured views of the Hudson River.

fdr house tour tickets

Roosevelt would often spend early mornings in his room reading the paper or meeting with one of his secretaries.

Beside his bed, a designated phone provided a direct, secure line to the White House.

fdr house tour tickets

Having direct communication with Washington was state-of-the-art technology at the time, and proved crucial as his health began to fail towards the end of his life.

Our tour guide ended his presentation with a surprising detail: the clothes hanging in Roosevelt's bedroom closet.

fdr house tour tickets

"The clothes that are in that room on display, FDR handpicked for you to see," our guide said. "He knew you were coming."

Eleanor turned Springwood over to the National Park Service in 1945, shortly after Roosevelt's death, and spoke at its dedication as a national historic site in 1946.

"I think Franklin realized that the historic library, the house, and the peaceful resting place behind the high hedge with flowers blooming around it would perhaps mean something to the people of the United States," she said at the event, author Olin Dows wrote in his 1949 book, "Franklin Roosevelt at Hyde Park," according to the National Park Service. "They would understand the rest and peace and strength which he had gained here and perhaps learn to come, and go away with some sense of healing and courage themselves."

As I exited Springwood through the south lawn, I was greeted by stunning views of the Hudson Valley.

fdr house tour tickets

Roosevelt planted many of the trees on the property as part of his forestry experiments and conservation efforts.

Visitors could also pay their respects at the Roosevelts' burial site in Springwood's rose garden.

fdr house tour tickets

Roosevelt wrote that he wanted to be buried where the sundial stood in the rose garden on his Hyde Park estate, according to the National Park Service .

Roosevelt's legacy lives on in his presidential library and museum, the construction of which he oversaw himself.

fdr house tour tickets

The Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum was dedicated in 1941.

He was the first US president to establish a library to house papers and artifacts from his political career, a model that every president since has followed.

fdr house tour tickets

When I visited my first presidential library , the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, I bought a passport to fill with stamps from all 15 presidential libraries nationwide. I was delighted to find a desk with stamps to add to my booklet just outside the gift shop.

Springwood remains a meaningful historical site memorializing one of America's most prominent presidents.

fdr house tour tickets

Nearly 10,000 people visited Springwood on the first day it was open to the public in 1946, and they haven't stopped visiting since.

Students, staff and faculty are invited to participate in regional events to celebrate Juneteenth and Pride Month.

CU Boulder will close on Wednesday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth, Colorado’s newest official state holiday. Juneteenth marks the historic date when the Union Army arrived in Texas in 1865 to proclaim freedom for Black and African Americans in 1865, approximately two months after the official end of the Civil War and more than two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Emancipation Proclamation .

Observed in Black and African American communities since 1866, the Juneteenth name is a portmanteau of “June” and “nineteenth.” It became an official state holiday in 2023 when Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed a legislative bill into law recognizing the significance of the date in U.S. history. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Act into law.

Things To Do

Travel | what you need to know before you go to a national park this summer.

fdr house tour tickets

The National Park Service has tightened access at the most popular of the 63 national parks to reduce crowding and traffic jams, which have become worse as visitor counts have soared.

A timed-entry reservation system has been put into effect, with the goal of spreading out visitation throughout the day, to avoid nightmare traffic jams and gruesomely long waits, officials said.

Arches National Park is among the national parks that now require reservations. (AP Photo/Beth Harpaz)

Typically, reservations are required during peak visitor hours, such as 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. (If you arrive before or after those hours, you won’t need one.) Check the National Park Service website for each park for details.  And if you already have camping or other permits or activity reservations, entrance reservations aren’t required.

Sometimes timed entry tickets are required to get into historic homes, to board ferries or to drive specific roads, such as the Going-To-The-Sun Road in Glacier National Park. Each park has its own rules.

Here are the national parks and monuments requiring reservations at this writing, though you should really check the website to make sure there haven’t been any changes. (And note that some state parks and recreation areas have also jumped on the bandwagon. See details below.)

  • Acadia National Park, Maine
  • Adams National Historical Park, Massachusetts
  • Arches National Park, Utah
  • Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico
  • Ellis Island Part of Statue of Liberty National Monument, New York
  • Ford’s Theatre, Washington, DC
  • Fort Matanzas National Monument, Florida (Ferry ticket)
  • Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, Washington, DC
  • Gateway Arch National Park, Missouri
  • Glacier National Park, Montana (Going-to-the-Sun Road eastbound, the North Fork, and Many Glacier areas)
  • Haleakalā National Park, Maui, Hawaii (for sunrise viewing only)
  • Independence National Historical Park, Pennsylvania
  • Mount Rainier, Washington
  • Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial, Ohio (Memorial Deck only)
  • Redwood National and State Parks, California (required only for Gold Bluffs Beach and Fern Canyon)
  • Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
  • Sagamore Hill National Historic Site (Theodore Roosevelt House) New York
  • Statue Of Liberty National Monument, New York
  • Thomas Edison National Historical Park (To visit Edison home) New Jersey
  • Timpanogos Cave National Monument, Utah (Cave tour required)
  • Washington Monument, Washington, DC (elevator to the top. Some same-day passes available)
  • Yosemite National Park, California

Perhaps interestingly, you won’t need a reservation to visit Yellowstone National Park, at least not as of this writing.

Clouds hang below the summit of Haleakala volcano in Haleakala National Park on Hawaii's island of Maui, Monday, Jan. 23, 2017. Park officials say the sunrise on Haleakala attracts over a thousand people a day, resulting in an overload of visitors and creating a safety hazard. As a result, anyone wanting to see the sunrise on the summit will now be required to make reservations in advance and pay a small fee. (Photo by Caleb Jones, The Associated Press)

And, while we’re on the subject, note that you may need a special advance permit to visit certain overcrowded attractions, such as the popular Angels Landing hike at Zion National Park in Utah. You don’t need a timed ticket to get into Zion (although you do have to ride a shuttle bus), however if you want to make this popular hike, you’ll need a permit in advance.

In addition to your timed entry ticket, you’ll also need to pay the fee is for that particular park on arrival, or have a pass that enables you to enter free, such as a senior, military, disabled or 4th grader pass.

How to reserve a timed-entry National Park ticket

These are available in advance on the Recreation.gov website or mobile app. It’s a good idea to get one as soon as your plans are firm.

There will be a limited number of last minute timed-entry tickets made available at 6 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time on the night before. These will probably go quickly, so be ready.

Glacier National Park in Montana now requires reservations as a way of managing crowds. (AP Photo/Beth J. Harpaz)

How to book: Go to the Recreation.gov website or app (you must create an account) or call the reservation line at 877-444-6777. Reservations cannot be booked at park offices.  It costs $2 to make a reservation. This is not refundable.

What about National Forest sites?

Yes, it’s true. We haven’t finished listing all the types of places you might need a reservation. At the most popular National Forest fun spots, expect to find that you’ll also need to book in advance. For example, at the Coconino National Forest in Arizona, the Fossil Creek Wild and Scenic River trails and waterfall require advance booking on Recreation.gov .

It’s not a bad idea to double check, so you don’t get shut out.

Reservations for state parks

And even some particularly popular state parks are now requiring advance reservations. You’re not getting in without one, so take heed. The downside is that you have to pay for the reservations. The upside is that you’ll be able to find a place to park.

Here are a few of the most popular:

Reservations cost $5 per person, plus $10 parking. They can be made up to 30 days in advance. (Make a reservation here: gostateparks.hawaii.gov )

  •   Waiʻānapanapa State Park and its black sand beach along the Road to Hana in Maui.
  • Īao Valley State Monument,  Maui
  • Diamond Head State Monument. Oahu
  • Hāʻena State Park, Kauai

Advance purchase day passes are not mandatory but parks do fill up, so these “Save The Day” passes are highly recommended. Texas has 84 state parks. Here are some of the most heavily visited. (Reserve here: tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/reservations  or call 1-512-389-8900.)

  • Balmorhea State Park
  • Brazos Bend State Park
  • Cedar Hill State Park
  • Dinosaur Valley State Park
  • Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
  • Garner State Park
  • Inks Lake State Park
  • McKinney Falls State Park
  • Palo Duro Canyon State Park
  • Ray Roberts Lake State Park

Nevada requires $5 advance day use reservations only for the Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area . In Tennesee , only the Cummins Falls State Park requires a $6 access permit. So it goes without saying that if you’re planning to see a state park or national forest recreation area that you know is popular, it’s never a bad idea to find out if you need  to book it in advance.

SW Detroit businesses prep for Michigan Central reopening blitz, hope to recover from NFL Draft

fdr house tour tickets

Detroit — Business leaders and restaurant owners in Corktown and Southwest Detroit hope to feel an economic boost in foot traffic as thousands descend on Corktown Thursday and Friday for the long-awaited reopening of Michigan Central Station.

Nearby restaurants have arranged rooftops, are opening up their patios, placing more flat-screen televisions and are hosting watch parties to stream a first-time-in-a-generation concert Thursday night.

For some businesses, the reopening — and the crowds that will follow to see the 111-year-old station's rebirth, first for the concert and later during public tours that start Friday — marks a chance from them to redo the NFL Draft in April, when business didn't trickle to neighborhoods outside of downtown.

"I don't really have any idea what to expect. Chaos for sure," said Jennifer Clotworthy, special operations manager of Mercury Burger Bar and Ottava Via on Michigan Avenue just east of Michigan Central.

Some of Corktown's longstanding operators like Clotworthy said the NFL Draft was "one of our worst weeks on the books" as attention, and tourist dollars, were concentrated in downtown Detroit.

Now, with Michigan Central Station's concert and two months of open house tours — 15,000 free tickets were given out for the concert and 60,000 for the first 10 days of tours — Clotworthy and other business owners are cautiously optimistic and hoping for redemption.

Still, some worry the foot traffic won't be as robust because there will be 19 local food trucks serving concessions inside Roosevelt Park on Thursday and fewer than a dozen during the open house tours.

The event is already having an impact, Clotworthy said, with a 10-foot-tall perimeter barrier around Roosevelt Park and several street closures making it difficult for mobility to and from Southwest Detroit.

But that's not stopping Mercury from setting up outside stands to sell burgers and hotdogs alongside the perimeter fence and pulling people in to serve drinks during the "dry event."

"We're sticking to what we always do, staying local with (ingredients), Guernsey, Honeybee salsa. When we got down here, building this city up was always a part of the plan. We stick to that even when it becomes more laborious and expensive because there's a lot of heart into it," said Clotworthy, who has worked operations of the restaurants for more than 20 years and lives next door to the station.

She said it's been a long time coming: "The team at Michigan Central was very communicative with the community so we had time to get ready and it's exciting."

To prepare for the concert, they've ordered more high-top standing tables, are selling sealed to-go cocktails (alcohol won't be available at the concert) and will be streaming the event on their flatscreen TVs, even though it will probably be heard, but not visible through the windows.

Jacques and Christine Driscoll, owners of Johnny Noodle King, Green Dot Stables and Yellow Light Coffee & Donuts, agreed the draft resulted in a 20% loss of their business that week, but when it comes to Michigan Central, they're excited for the future impact.

The couple is opening their pop-up bar for one night only on Thursday at 2524 Bagley behind the station, offering cocktails to those passing by. Torn between work and attending the concert, the couple decided it would be better to bartend at the pop-up and "listen from the backyard." They're also opening up a rooftop patio at Johnny Noodle King, located at 2601 W. Fort St. and the patio at Green Dot Stables, 2200 W. Lafayette Blvd., will all have areas to hear the concert from afar.

"At all our spots, we're just far enough to be a part of the festivities and still hear all the action," said Jacques Driscoll, who has been in Detroit for 14 years and said it's a surreal moment for the area. "I don't think anyone ever expected this to happen. You always hoped it would and would even hear things over the years but to see it getting pulled off is amazing. We're already seeing an impact in the area."

And he says they're already seeing the station's impact. Across from Bagley, a new 60-unit apartment is going up and "I'm sure it wouldn't have happened if it weren't for MCS," Driscoll said. "I can only imagine it's going to be great for business. It's more than just the station, it gives confidence to other businesses and developers, which is the big impact."

Deeper into Corktown, Alpino Detroit, 1426 Bagley St., recently renovated its private cellar space and is installing two 55-inch televisions to host a Michigan Central Reception Hour and watch party ahead and during the "Live From Detroit" concert. For $65 a ticket, guests can park, enjoy libations and small bites.

Alpino opened last year and has since been acclaimed as one of Detroit News' best restaurants of the year for its Alpine Mountain-inspired menu. Owner David Ritcher said they've doubled in reservations since Monday and it's mostly larger parties.

"I don't know what to expect from people who bought tickets for a tour but if there's business to be done as a result of MCS coming to town, we hope to see it and we'll be prepared for walk-ups and short-turn reservations," Ritcher said. "We're lucky we have a large dining room and 40+ patio seating."

The nearby Godfrey Hotel is prepping its IO Godfrey Rooftop Lounge for a full night of anticipated guests. They have added four Ford-based specialty drinks to the menu including the Thunderbird, a tincup whiskey with mint and powdered sugar, a bright red Galaxie made with tequila, Cointreau, lime and prickly pair syrup and the Mach-E made with Jose Cuervo, Aperol, Amaro Nonino and lemon.

"We've definitely seen a steady stream of folks with Newlab and this week, a tremendous number directly and indirectly in connection with the station," said Godfrey Hotel General Manager Aaron Black. "We have seen an uptick in dining reservations and we have a great relationship with Michigan Central on working to make coming downtown attractive."

Police presence

The Detroit Police Department did not return calls for comment about the agency's presence in Corktown during the concert and tours.

But if the reopening of Michigan Central is anything like the NFL Draft in late April, police will be present.

During the draft, police were visible throughout downtown during the three-day event. Police Chief James White said all officers would be working.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

fdr house tour tickets

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

fdr house tour tickets

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

fdr house tour tickets

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

fdr house tour tickets

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

fdr house tour tickets

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

fdr house tour tickets

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

fdr house tour tickets

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Before that, the 70-year-old will make her way up and down California, playing the Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl in San Diego on Nov. 20, the brand new Intuit Dome in Inglewood on Nov. 23, the Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert on Nov. 24 and the Chase Center in San Francisco on Nov. 26.

Tickets will be available this week, starting with an artist presale beginning Tuesday.

The general ticket sale begins Friday, according to concert giant and tour promoter Live Nation . Special guests joining Lauper on tour will be announced at a later date. The singer also will be hitting the festival circuit this summer with appearances at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Glastonbury Festival also in the U.K. and Rock in Rio in Brazil before embarking on her tour.

The Brooklyn-born pop icon, the first woman in history to have four top-five singles from a debut album, reached the pinnacle of pop music in the 1980s with her spirited anthem “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” off her first album, “She’s So Unusual,” which helped her earn a best new artist Grammy Award.

Cyndi Lauper sees herself in Billie Eilish and Lizzo: They’re ‘not about being an object’

Cyndi Lauper brings her Home for the Holidays benefit to L.A. for the first time Dec. 10, with special guests from Marilyn Manson to Billy Porter.

The “True Colors” singer’s tour announcement landed the day before her documentary, “Let the Canary Sing,” begins streaming on Paramount+. The feature-length film, which premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival , was directed by Emmy Award winner Alison Ellwood and explores the singer’s life and career.

“Over the years I’ve been asked to do a documentary about my life and work, but it never felt like the right time,” Lauper said last month . “Until now. When I first met Alison Ellwood, I knew right away I could trust her to tell my story honestly, which was incredibly important to me, and she succeeded in that.”

To celebrate the tour and film, Lauper will be honored Tuesday with an imprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, where a private screening of the film and Q&A will follow that evening.

Over the weekend, the Emmy and Tony Award-winning artist joined West Hollywood’s annual Pride Parade as the celebration’s Lifetime Ally Icon honoree. The award recognized Lauper for her years of advocacy on behalf of LGBTQ+ rights, social justice and women’s issues.
