Cruise Director Shares the Excitement of Working for Disney Cruise Line as Summer Itineraries Heat Up

We’re catching up with Cast Members across Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, learning about their roles and memorable experiences on the job. Here, Cruise Director Clayton Lyndsey shares some of his favorite memories, what he enjoys most about his job, and what’s in store for guests on this summer’s itineraries.

cruise director disney

When did you first join Disney Cruise Line? Throughout my career, I’ve held various Entertainment Leadership positions. In 1998, I was one of the first onboard host deejays on the Disney Magic. I then helped launch the Disney Wonder as the Shore Excursion Manager, and later became an official Cruise Director in 2010.

What does a cruise director do? The Cruise Director is the Executive Entertainment leader responsible for all shipboard entertainment, Port Adventures and Youth Activities. I keep guests informed of safety drill announcements, the latest activities, and the ship’s progress to ports of call to ensure our guests have a wonderful cruise experience. Cruise Directors also serve as members of the shipboard Steering Committee. It’s a big job, but a lot of fun!

cruise director disney

You’ve sailed all over the world. What is your favorite itinerary and why? I’m very fortunate to have been on board during our first transatlantic sailing, our first season in Alaska, and our first cruise in the Mediterranean. Speaking from experience, guests sailing with us to those two very special places this summer are in for a treat.

On an Alaskan sailing, we experience the beauty and majesty of nature up close. Where else can you fly to a glacier, go whale watching, and see mountain goats as you sail through fjords.

cruise director disney

In the Mediterranean, it’s all about the history and culture of the amazing places we visit. In ports like Civitavecchia, you can take a train to Rome and see the Coliseum (one of my favorites!), and the next day visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The best part of a Disney Cruise Line itinerary is that everything is planned for you, so all you have to do is enjoy sightseeing!

What is your favorite part of your job? There are so many things! I love seeing the joy on our guests’ faces as they experience all we have to offer – especially entertainment. Disney is known for excellent entertainment, and we tell incredible stories from stem to stern. I also love working with my fellow Crew Members. Our guests always have fantastic experiences with their stateroom hosts, dining team and cruise staff – and that’s what makes our jobs so memorable.

Disney Cruise Line recently announced plans to enhance the Disney Magic. What will that mean for guests onboard? I know our guests will be excited to see all of the amazing changes we’re making to the Disney Magic, including some favorite elements from the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, but also some unique features such as the AquaDunk thrill slide and the Avengers Academy in the Oceaneer Club. There’s something for everyone onboard each of our ships, and these new experiences will be pure magic.

What advice would you give to someone interested in working onboard a Disney Cruise Line ship? Just do it! I’ve loved my career with Disney Cruise Line because of the experiences I’ve had and the friends I’ve made. We have Crew Members from more than 60 different countries, and the friends you make onboard our ships are for life. It’s definitely a special place to work.

A 'Dream' come true: Meet a Disney Cruise Line Cruise Director

VIDEO: This doughnut on a shake is Disney Cruise goals

Editor's note: This is the latest installment in our series on some of the most unusual and amazing jobs in the travel industry. Jimmy Lynett is the cruise director on the Disney Dream.

If you've ever dreamed about living on a cruise ship, you'll probably find yourself envious of Jimmy Lynett, the cruise director on the Disney Dream.

"Cruise Director, for me, was always something to aspire to," Lynett told "Good Morning America." "I started out in youth activities, way back in 1998, when we had one ship in the fleet."

That ship was the Disney Magic.

"My career took me through all different areas of the entertainment department," Lynett said. Aside from the youth department, he also worked in the adults department and as a port adventures manager.

"From there, I maneuvered my way over to assistant cruise director," he said. Finally, he landed his goal.

As the cruise director on the Disney Dream, Lynett said his most important responsibility is to make sure the guests are having a good time. In conjunction, he has to make sure his team is living a "healthy, balanced life" at work and outside of work.

"Twenty-four hours, 7 days a week, you are in your work location, whether in the crew area or in the guest area," he said about life on the ship.

Lynett said he's especially happy when parents get the opportunity to reconnect on their vacation while their kids are enjoying the kids' clubs and other youth activities.

"Even if it's just a stroll on the upper deck, it's great to give them that opportunity," he says.

(More: This doughnut on a shake is Disney Cruise goals)

On board the Dream, guests will see Lynett at the Walt Disney Theater, where he said his main goal is "energy."

"I really try to entertain the kids," he said. "I find that when the kids are engaged, the parents are content."

He should know. Lynett, who makes his home in Australia when he's not on the Dream, has three children of his own.

Lynett's job involves being "on" at almost all times. He doesn't drink coffee, but instead gets his pep from the guests on the ship.

"Every time new guests enter the ship, there's new energy on board, and it's contagious, not just for me but the whole crew," he told "GMA." "It's that continual flow of excitement that keeps me going. There is nothing like seeing a child see Mickey Mouse."

!markup html=[

So what's it like behind the scenes?

Lynett credits the ship's captain with setting a positive tone for the crew from the top down. And, according to him, crew members are just as friendly behind the scenes as they are with the guests.

"You can't be one way with the guests and then shut it off," he said. "Even when we're passing each other in what we call the I-95, everyone smiles and says hello to each other, and we have crew members from 60 countries around the world."

Because crew members on the ship have no weekends off, Lynett said it's crucial to take advantage of downtime in order to maintain some kind of balance.

And while the pros far outweigh the cons, Lynett said there's one downside to being the cruise director: He's away from his family for 10 weeks at a time. He said, though, that during the following 10 weeks he's off the ship.

His advice for people who aspire to the job of cruise director, the most well-known crew member on a ship?

"Everyone has a dream -- never give up on it," Lynett said. "But you have to be persistent."

"Don't get into a funk in any one role," he added. "They will make you even better at the job you aspired to when you get there."

Cruise Director Darren McBurney Is Ready To Take Center Stage on the Disney Treasure

by Justin Hermes · October 24, 2023

Darren McBurney

When the Disney Treasure sets sail next year , guests’ vacations will be in the hands of Cruise Director Darren McBurney.

Cruise Directors not only kick off the morning show and introduce nighttime entertainment on the Disney Cruise Line, but they also manage all of the cruise’s entertainment teams including lifeguards, youth activities, port adventures, technicians, and more.

“It’s really about the flow of the ship and everything we can do to help the team along the way,” McBurney said. “It’s a strange job, but for me, it’s the perfect job.”

Darren’s Disney Story

Darren McBurney may be a 25-year veteran of the Disney Cruise Line these days, but his Disney story got started in the most unexpected of ways.

It all started when McBurney competed in a British television game show in 1995. With his general knowledge and a little luck, he won a two-week vacation to Walt Disney World.

After his first Disney trip, Darren was determined to work for Disney.

“I told my friends ‘I don’t know how or when, but I am going to work for that company.’ It just felt right to me,” Darren said.

Joining the Disney Cruise Line’s Opening Team

After researching his options, in late 1997 Darren heard that the Disney Cruise Line was hiring for an opening team.

“I knew that for the Disney Cruise Line opening team, and a brand-new venture for the company, they would be looking for experts in the field,” he explained. “Although my love was entertainment, my background was in retail, and I was lucky enough to be chosen as part of the opening team as a merchandise host.”

As a member of the Disney Cruise Line team, Darren volunteered for a position that wasn’t even created yet and started planning crew events. Through hard work and dedication, he transitioned to entertainment and worked positions in port adventure, youth activities, and more.

Over the years, Darren held more than 14 different positions before he finally landed his dream job — Cruise Director.

When the Disney Cruise Line celebrated its 25th anniversary this year, it was a particularly special occasion for Darren.

“I remember selling the car I had at the time and saying to friends, I hope I last about two years, to pay off the car loan,” Darren said. “I take it day by day, but I would have never suspected 25 years.

Getting Ready To Set Sail Aboard the Disney Treasure

With the Disney Treasure not set to take its inaugural cruise until December of 2024, Darren will continue to spend the next few months on the Disney Wish as Cruise Director, while also researching logistics for potential Disney Treasure activities.

Next year, he will travel to Germany, where he will visit the Meyer Werft shipyard and assist with on-site management of operations and entertainment needs for the new ship. He will also onboard new crew members.

“I’m really looking forward to working with the leaders and making sure that our crew members, both seasoned and newbies have a smooth and meaningful onboarding process,” Darren said. “That’s one of the things in the back of my mind, always.”

Launching the Disney Wish Cruise Ship: Patricia Duerr, Product Management Director

cruise director disney

Patricia Duerr is a Product Management Director with the Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Technology & Digital organization. In her role, she supports Disney Cruise Line digital products such as the Navigator app and the Disney Cruise Line website. She recently was on the opening team for the Disney Wish, the newest ship to join the Disney Cruise Line family.

To learn more about Patricia’s role and her experience contributing to a new ship, we asked her a few questions.

Tell us about your role! What’s it like working in Technology & Digital for Disney Parks, Experiences and Products? I am a Product Director for Disney Cruise Line Guest experiences, specifically the Navigator app experience as well as the Disney Cruise Line website. As part of my role, I’m really focused on the Guest experience digital strategy across these spaces. I think about the Guest’s experience from the very beginning, when they first have interest in Disney Cruise Line, all the way through researching and booking their vacation, to the planning process, to going on the vacation. Our app is the conduit for our Guests’ experience on the ship – it gives them all the information they need about the ship and to get the most out of their trip, so it’s very important.

What’s an important skill to have as a Product Director? Definitely being able to build strong partner relationships and being a good collaborator. A lot of what we do is based on rapport. We work with so many partners because we’re focused on the end-to-end experience. It can be anything from embarkation partners and thinking through improving the online check-in experience, to sales and marketing partners, whether we’re supporting Guests or travel agents in booking a cruise online. And then operational partners onboard the ship, like food & beverage and hotel operations.

We generally always have a seat at the table, and we bring our various partners to our tables as well. Whenever we’re conceptualizing any new experiences or thinking about how we can improve the digital experience, we want to make sure our partners are along for the journey to provide their knowledge and best practices. Collaboration is key.

Do you have a favorite part of your job? I would say it’s twofold – first, it’s all the people I work with. They’re so incredibly talented, they have so much passion and drive around the Disney Cruise Line brand. It really comes down to the people. And then two, it’s the cruise industry. I love all the unique challenges we face working in this industry, and it’s fun when you can overcome some of those challenges while working with great people.

What experiences do you get working in Technology & Digital for Disney Parks, Experiences and Products that you wouldn’t get anywhere else? So many things! This sounds cliche, but being part of the magic. Being able to say that I was on the Disney Wish crossing, bringing the ship all the way to Port Canaveral from Germany where she was built. I feel like I got to be part of the ship – I can point to things I worked on, some technology-related and some not. I can actually point to a table on the ship that I helped move in and assemble!

Working for Disney, it’s like you are part of the storytelling Disney has so uniquely engrained in all of their brands. Working on the Disney Wish opening team, I felt like I was more than a technologist – I was actually part of the making of the ship. I don’t know that I could ever get that working outside of this company.

cruise director disney

Patricia and coworkers celebrating at an evening BBQ on Castaway Cay.

What an awesome career experience to contribute to Disney’s newest cruise ship. What are you most excited about onboard the Disney Wish, from a technology perspective? Definitely the Worlds of Marvel restaurant – it’s incredible! It’s a technology restaurant and it’s absolutely immersive from start to finish. The lighting, the sounds, the digital screens where you see vast Marvel IP and storytelling throughout your dining experience that you can actually interact with through your Quantum Core on your dining table. And of course, some fun surprises I won’t spoil. It’s just such a cool experience. Whether you’re a huge fan of Marvel or you know very little about Marvel, you will find the restaurant incredible and appreciate the partnership of many teams including Technology & Digital, Walt Disney Imagineering, and Disney Cruise Line Entertainment who brought this story to life onboard!

Is there a project you supported on the Disney Wish you can share more about? This project isn’t specific to the Disney Wish, but I am super proud of how we’ve revolutionized the safety drill. Using the Navigator app, Guests can now complete the required safety drill on their own time rather than being required to report to a certain deck for an in-person safety demonstration at an assigned time.

Guests can walk onto the ship, open the app and get directions to their assembly station, then use the app to scan the station’s sign. The app uses machine learning to recognize the sign and tells the Guest whether they’re in the right spot or not that they would need to assemble in the event of an emergency. Then, the app checks you in and you can watch the safety video on your phone. And then the safety drill is done! Previously, Guests would need to go and stand on the boat deck at their assigned time to listen to all the safety information, and it probably took around 45 minutes. Completing the safety drill through the Navigator app is more convenient and gives Guests more time back in their day!

cruise director disney

Patricia and some of her coworkers smiling with safety drill signs

What emerging tech are you most excited about right now? Thinking about how technology can impact Disney Cruise Line, I’m most excited about leveraging artificial intelligence. It’s not necessarily emerging tech, but we have a unique situation where we can use AI to help with the onboarding experience. Recently, we launched the Guest Services chat through the Navigator app. It allows Guests to ask their questions from anywhere onboard the ship – on the pool deck, at a restaurant, or anywhere else they want to be – instead of standing in a long queue to chat with a Guest Services Cast Member in person.

I think we have the opportunity to take that a step further and use artificial intelligence and machine learning to automate responses to some of the simpler questions our Cast get asked most often, to minimize wait times for our Guests. This is harder for Disney Cruise Line because we’re on a ship, so it’s more difficult for us to use a lot of the cloud-based technologies. I think if we can figure that out, it’ll be a game changer operationally for our ships!

If you enjoy collaborating with many different types of people, and want to contribute to new and exciting Disney products and experiences, a career in Technology & Digital at The Walt Disney Company could be a good fit for you! Visit www.disneytech.com to explore available opportunities.

Inside the Disney Wish, the company's newest cruise ship

The maiden voyage will set sail in summer 2022.

Disney Cruise Line has released more details regarding its newest cruise ship, Disney Wish, which will open to the public for bookings on May 27.

Disney Wish is the company’s most innovative and magical ship yet. The ship’s motif is enchantment, and it focuses on a tale as old as time -- wishing upon a star. It intends to include all the classic things families love about Disney cruises while also introducing new and incredible experiences to make the trip even more memorable.

“The Disney Wish will be like no other ship at sea,” Lisa Pickett, hotel director at Disney Cruise Line, said.

The maiden voyage will set sail on June 9, 2022, with a five-night cruise from Port Canaveral, Florida, to Nassau, Bahamas, and Castaway Cay, Disney's private island. From new attractions to dining experiences, here’s just a taste of what you can expect.

A reimagined upper deck

One of the more fantastical additions to the ship is the AquaMouse, Disney’s first attraction at sea.

The water ride will take riders along 760 feet and immerse them in “The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse” through the use of special effects and lighting.

PHOTO: The AquaMouse will be a water ride attraction aboard the Disney Wish cruise.

Animated shorts featuring the iconic character and a brand-new story involving him called “Scuba Scramble” will line the inner walls of the tunnels that riders will be zooming through.

“Families are going to absolutely love this experience," DCL cruise director Jimmy Lynett said. "It is going to be a one-of-a-kind experience only on the Disney Wish."

The spacious upper deck will also have six pools, some of which will be dedicated for particular ages. Kids will be able to splash around in a “Toy Story”-themed area, while adults can soak their troubles away at the Quiet Cove.

They will be able to tap into their artsy side at Fairytale Hall, an area that consists of three rooms: Rapunzel’s Art Studio, Belle’s Library and Anna and Elsa’s Summerhaus.

The Walt Disney Imagineering Lab will pull back the curtain on what Imagineers, the people who research and develop ideas for Disney, actually do. Kids will be able to step into Imagineers’ shoes to see what they do and how they do it, and even get to try out some experimentation themselves.

“It's really taking our young cruisers behind the scenes and looking at how we create the magic, how we use our imagination,” Claire Weiss, creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering Germany, said.

"Our Grand Hall is truly our castle on the sea. It is basically the castle part of the park for Disney Cruise Line. We know that the castle is iconic to the Disney brand and to the Disney experience, but also to this idea of wish fulfillment and wishes coming true,” Weiss said. “So it seemed like a fitting architectural style to give this theme of enchantment a real world place to go.”

“Its location is just prime real estate on the ship for bringing people together,” Lynett said.

Luna will be an hub for live shows and other interactive elements that are for all ages during the daytime and transition into adult-only in the evening. The Walt Disney Theatre will put on original Broadway-style stage productions, while Wonder and Never Land Cinemas will screen various Disney movies.

The Hero Zone will be a fully enclosed, air-conditioned sports arena where families will be able to get active and participate in game-show-style competitions.

New culinary delights

Adults also have the luxury of private dining and bar areas just for them.

“Star Wars” fans will love the spaceship-themed Hyperspace Lounge, with drinks inspired by the worlds of Tatooine, Batu and Mustafar.

There will also be several upscale dining options just for adults, such as Palo Steakhouse, The Rose and Enchanté, all inspired by “Beauty and the Beast.”

For families as a whole, there will be three new dining options that elevate it from just simply eating to an entire experience.

PHOTO: "Arendale: A Frozen Dining Experience" is a new culinary theater aboard the Disney Wish cruise.

Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure will serve Nordic-influenced cuisine while characters like Anna, Elsa, Kristoff and Olaf sing and dance around diners.

Diners will take a more active role in Worlds of Marvel, where some of the Avengers are on a mission and need assistance. The food will be inspired by places featured in the Marvel movies, such as New York, Sokovia and Wakanda.

1923 brings diners back to an age of old Hollywood glamour and pays homage to the very year the Walt Disney Company was founded. The cuisine will be centered around the different cultures that make up California’s heritage.

A home away from home

Disney Wish will have 1,254 staterooms, most of which will have an ocean view and a veranda. The rooms are designed to be people’s home away from home, where they relax in a peaceful setting.

“We have our Disney Cruise Line exclusive split bath and ample storage space,” Pickett said. “We'll have more than 900 state rooms that are connecting, which is incredible for those family experiences or those parties that traveled together.”

There will also be four royal suites that can accommodate up to six guests. Two of the suites will also be two stories tall with spiral staircases for those who truly want to live in luxury.

“One thing that's really important in our state rooms and our suites is we are continuing to bring Disney stories of enchantment to life. So they're a little bit different from the state rooms you know and love on the existing ships,” Weiss said.

Disney’s club 33 getting movie treatment from ‘goosebumps’ writer darren lemke, shawn levy’s 21 laps (exclusive).

Disneyland's private dining club is located near the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, which helped launch the theme park-to-screen pipeline in the early 2000s.

Darren Lemke and 21 Laps Logo

A private Disney club is going public. Like, big-screen public.

Club 33, the exclusive dining club inside Disneyland, is getting the movie treatment.

Darren Lemke, who has worked on such family films as Goosebumps starring Jack Black and Shazam! , has been tapped to pen the script set in a fantastical world about the club.

Related Stories

Ryan reynolds was "surprised" and "grateful" disney allowed r-rating for 'deadpool & wolverine', 'deadpool & wolverine' director shawn levy says film requires no "prior research" of marvel cinematic universe.

The project is said to exude the tone and vibes of Clue and Night at the Museum , Levy’s own fantasy-adventure trilogy set in a museum and featuring exhibits and historical figures to come to life.

For Club 33, the story centers on a young aspiring detective who receives a mysterious invite to the highly secretive Club 33. In this case, it’s a magical and exclusive dining club whose members are the greatest and most iconic figures from across history. When a murder is committed on the premises, the patrons look to the young detective to solve it.

21 Laps executive Emily Morris brought in the project and is overseeing it.

Club 33 is the latest effort by Disney to seek screen inspiration from its theme parks. Adapting attractions has been a 21st-century tradition ever since The Pirates of the Caribbean became a billion-dollar franchise, which in turn fueled park interest. Other efforts, such as 2015’s Tomorrowland or the more recent Jungle Cruise or Haunted Mansion , have shown it’s not an easy ride.

Even non-marquee attractions are getting attention. Ron Moore ( For All Mankind ) is developing a Disney+ series based on Society of Explorers and Adventurers, while Ryan Reynolds is working on a feature on the same subject.

21 Laps recently earned a PGA nomination for All the Light We Cannot See , which adapts the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Anthony Doerr. The company has Never Let G o, a sci-fi horror movie starring Halle Berry releasing Sept. 27 from Lionsgate, and Levy is about to start the extensive press tour for Deadpool & Wolverine , which he directed and co-wrote.

Lemke is a known player in the family feature space. On top of the Goosebumps franchise and Shazam! , he worked on DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek Forever After and Turbo . Most recently, he earned a credit on Kung Fu Panda 4 . He also serves as an exec producer on Wheel of Time , the Amazon Prime Video series that adapts the fantasy books by Robert Jordan.

Lemke is repped by UTA and Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment.

Disney Makes Its Exclusive Club 33 Available for Everyone in Unprecedented Announcement

in Disneyland Resort , Movies & TV

A busy outdoor scene at a Disney theme park with a large crowd of people, Disney merchandise stalls, a riverboat in the background, trees, and a clear blue sky.

The Walt Disney Company’s most exclusive and desired location–Club 33–is being made available to every Disney fan in an unprecedented move from the House of Mouse.

Wondrous Journeys projections at Sleeping Beauty Castle

The Disney theme parks are some of the most desirable vacation locations in the world. Boasting six resorts across three continents, Disney’s empire looks only set to grow thanks to CEO Bob Iger’s recently announced $60 billion company investment , half of which is being injected into its Disney Experiences division .

With new attractions popping up yearly and future expansions already in motion , Disney’s theme parks are constantly shifting and evolving to meet guests’ needs and wants.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at night with Spaceship Earth in the background at EPCOT in Walt Disney World Resort

The desirable newness of attractions such as Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and TRON Lightcycle / Run keep guests coming back for more– even with the annual rising costs of a Disney vacation . It’s not just at Walt Disney World Resort where guests are enticed back; Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney’s first park, found in Anaheim, Southern California, is also a hive of evolution.

Depending on budget, the parks’ experiences are generally available for everyone. However, one element is off-limits for most: the exclusive Club 33 .

Front door to club 33

Club 33 was established at Disneyland Resort inside New Orleans Square at Disneyland Park in June 1967. Other locations can be found at Tokyo Disney Resort and Shanghai Disney Resort, with lounges available across Magic Kingdom Park, EPCOT, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World.

The 1901 Lounge is also available for Disneyland Club 33 members and their guests. It is located at the Carthay Circle Restaurant in Disneyland’s sister park, Disney California Adventure Park.

At the original location, Club 33 reopened in July 2014 after a closure for expansion and renovation. The private membership restaurant is “meant for Disneyland participants and VIPs and their guests” (per D23 ), with some private members, although the waiting list is extremely long.

A sophisticated entrance with a detailed, gray double door flanked by two potted plants. The archway above the door features a semi-circular window, and wall-mounted lanterns on either side emit a warm glow, creating an inviting atmosphere akin to an exclusive Disney Club 33 announcement.

Video and photography inside Club 33 are majorly restricted, adding more mystery and intrigue regarding membership. According to some reports , the cost for access to Club 33 at Disneyland Resort is $25,000 upfront, followed by $10,000 annually. It is upwards of that for membership at Walt Disney World Resort.

But for all of its pomp and mystery, Disney will officially unveil Club 33 for every single Disney fan in the world–just not in the way one may expect.

Walt Disney in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle

Recently announced in an exclusive with The Hollywood Reporter , The Walt Disney Company is releasing a new live-action whodunnit-style movie based on Club 33, effectively making every Disney fan able to experience the premium offering.

“For Club 33 , the story centers on a young aspiring detective who receives a mysterious invite to the highly secretive Club 33,” The Hollywood Reporter writes. “In this case, it’s a magical and exclusive dining club whose members are the greatest and most iconic figures from across history. When a murder is committed on the premises, the patrons look to the young detective to solve it.”

Jack Black in Goosebumps

Darren Lemke, the Goosebumps (2015) scribe, is writing the script for the movie, which is being produced by 21 Laps Entertainment, the production banner of Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen. 21 Laps Entertainment notably produces Stranger Things and the more recent adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s “All the Light We Cannot See” (2014), both on Netflix.

Levy, in a director capacity, is also in cahoots with Disney and Marvel Studios to bring Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time . Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) will hit movie theaters exclusively this July.

Deadpool dressed in a black and red superhero costume stands outdoors, holding a gun in one hand and pointing forward with the other hand. The costume has a mask covering their face, and a sword is seen strapped to their back. The background is a rocky terrain.

This take on the lore of Disney’s Club 33 “is said to exude the tone and vibes of Clue and Night at the Museum ,” per THR . Levy directed all three of the Night at the Museum franchise movies, and with Lemke–who has credits like Goosebumps and Shazam! (2019)–on board for the screenplay, it suggests a vibrant and fantastical take on this key part of Disney theme park history is in motion.

The upcoming Club 33 movie will be the next in an ever-growing line of theme park attraction-inspired adaptations. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, is the most commercial ride-inspired movie of the last two decades, having been based on the popular attraction of the same name at many of the parks.

While Jungle Cruise proved to be a hit with audiences despite debuting at the pandemic-era box office, Justin Simien’s Haunted Mansion famously crashed out, netting Disney just $117 million on a budget of approximately $150 million. The film’s opening in the summer, plus the lack of promotion due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes, have been attributed to the movie’s shortcomings.

With such a muddled box office history, will Disney be able to strike gold with this upcoming Club 33 movie? Or will guests have to continue forking out gold for one of those elusive private memberships in real life?

21 Disney Topiaries Taking Art Form to the Next Level

Thomas Smith

by Thomas Smith , Editorial Content Director, Disney Experiences

Throughout this year’s EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival , we’ve shared several “how’d they do that?” stories about our Disney topiaries but nothing like today’s update. We’re taking a special look back at this unique art form (and Disney tradition) with some vintage photos from the past and 21 top photos of 2024’s most detailed and elaborate topiaries that’ll make you say, “Ooh.”

Topiaries at "it's a small world" at Disneyland Park

Walt Disney originally got the idea of creating “living” topiaries when seeing traditional topiary gardening in Europe. Walt eventually then asked animators and Disneyland landscape teams to do their magic – as seen in a rare Disneyland Resort photo from our archives.

In 1963, there were 24 original Disneyland park topiaries, including a waltzing hippo, a poodle, a pig, bears, elephants, seals, and giraffes. In 1966, they were permanently planted at “it’s a small world.”

Beauty and the Beast Topiary at EPCOT

Over the years, topiaries like Belle and the Beast in France have become even more jaw-dropping. Horticulture teams often work with Walt Disney Animation Studio artists and Imagineers to leverage different types of topiary designs and techniques to create eye-catching characters and scenes out of plants and plant material.

Princess Tiana Topiary at EPCOT

As we’ve shared, the Princess Tiana topiary at The American Adventure at EPCOT is an extra special creation that stays true to the New Orleans spirit and scenery – even using magnolias and florals native to the area. Imagineer Brittany Smith and cast member Antoinette Valentin studied every detail of Disney Animation’s “The Princess and the Frog” to help turn a hand-drawn animation into a 3D figure.

Elsa Topiary at EPCOT

It’s the beginning of the topiary project where sketches and 3-D models play a crucial role in guiding the planning process before it’s passed off to welders who create the frame that’ll eventually become a character like Anna or Elsa found in Norway.

Lady and the Tramp Topiary at EPCOT

Many of the Disney topiaries that’ll stop you in your tracks are created with a design called Sphagnum Topiary, which uses a frame to shape the figure. The Lady and the Tramp topiaries at the Italy Pavilion are perfect examples – created with sphagnum moss and other plants.

Simba and Friends Topiaries at EPCOT

Like the stunning Simba and friends topiaries near The Land Pavilion, the process of creating a “living” masterpiece has been sped up by using sphagnum moss (a high-quality material from New Zealand) as a base to hold different species of plants to match Disney character clothing, hair and of course, fur texture!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs topiaries at EPCOT

There are more than 70 topiaries at the Flower & Garden Festival. And many of these masterpieces can take months to reach full bloom and be “show” ready, like the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs topiaries in Germany.

Groot Topiary at EPCOT

Every year, Disney teams are looking to add new magic to the topiaires and 2024 is no exception.  For the first time, Groot, the  Flora Colossi  from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, took root near Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind in World Discovery.

The design draws inspiration from the entertaining “I Am Groot” short featured on Disney+, titled Groot Takes a Bath, where the lovable character gets inventive with his topiary powers.

"Wish" Topiaries at EPCOT

And at the entrance of EPCOT, you find new topiaries featuring Asha, Valentino, and Star from the Disney Animation film “Wish.”

To authentically represent these characters, the team hand-wove Asha’s braids and incorporated lighting effects for Star’s celestial dust.

Cogsworth Topiary at EPCOT

With Lumiere and Cogsworth topiaries in France, here are the rest of this year’s best photos of Disney topiaries and where you can find them.

Bambi and friends topiaries at EPCOT

Bambi and friends topiaries are at World Showcase near Refreshment Port and favorites Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Chip ‘n’ Dale and Pluto can be spotted at the bridge to World Showcase at EPCOT.

Woody, Bo Peep and Her Sheep Topiaries at EPCOT

Woody and Bo Peep with her Sheep are can’t-miss topiaries at World Nature, between Imagination! and The Land Pavilion. A fantastic Captain Hook, with Peter Pan and Tick Tock Croc are at World Showcase between United Kingdom and Canada and the intricate Pumbaa and Timon topiaries are near The Land Pavilion.

Figment Topiary at EPCOT

The bright and colorful Figment topiary and flower towers greet guests in the World Celebration gardens area. An impressive Dragon is planted at the Japan Pavilion near Torii Gate and of course, the fascinating troll topiary can be found in Norway.

Vintage Topiaries at Disney

We hope you enjoyed this unique look back at Disney topiaries – old and new!

There’s still time to see the 2024 topiaries featured in today’s story at the Flower & Garden Festival and here’s a list of where you can find all of the stunning topiaries . The festival runs through May 27.

The director who shook up Disney and Hollywood animation with a mermaid, a genie from a lamp and a Polynesian princess

John musker, who headed up ‘the little mermaid’, ‘aladdin’ and ‘moana’, is debuting a short film after announcing his retirement from a 40-year career. ‘at disney in the 1990s, there was an emperor, but there weren’t 10 emperors’.

Director John Musker, at the Animayo International Summit in Gran Canaria, Spain.

When Steven Spielberg told Disney in 1989 that the movie that John Musker (Chicago, 70 years old) had made for them was going to sell $100 million in tickets, no one believed him. The new project wasn’t based on a classic story like Cinderella . What’s more, it featured reggae sung by a crab. Was this really what was going to lead the studio out of its long dry spell? “It was done with a sense of almost naivety,” Musker recalls. “We weren’t trying to imitate. It was more freeing. We didn’t have past successes, like ‘Is your movie going to be good as The Little Mermaid ?’ We hadn’t made it yet.”

“On the inside, I’m still an eight-year-old boy,” the director jokes, now gray-haired and with many successes under his belt. He’s at the Animayo International Summit in Gran Canaria , Spain, which took place last week, and where he gave master classes and lead the international jury in pre-selecting an animated short film that is now sure to be shortlisted for the Oscar race. He says that he’s happy to still be learning. Over four decades, he has co-directed, alongside Ron Clements, projects that depend on the work of massive teams like The Great Mouse Detective , Aladdin , The Little Mermaid , Hercules , The Princess and the Frog , and his leap to digital, Moana . In his new short film, I’m Hip , which stars a feline jazz singer, he has returned to drawing at long last. He hadn’t played that role since sketching the fearsome hunter who shoots Toby in The Fox and the Hound .

Before Ariel packed out theaters, the then-president of Disney, Jeffrey Katzenberg, told her creators that he wasn’t harboring many illusions about her film: “Movies about girls don’t work.” The Little Mermaid , he said, would never best Oliver & Company . “The big eye-opener was when we had a preview. It played so well to a public audience, all ages, including adults,” says Musker. “They decided they were doing two different ad campaigns. One was a silhouette of a mermaid, looking wistfully out. I think they saw there was a way to treat it a little more adult, classier. It has a lot of fun as a comedy. But there’s an emotional story, not just silliness. I mean, the Hans Christian Andersen’s story was that,” he tells EL PAÍS, who was invited to Animayo by the festival’s organization. Musker’s team had another curious exchange with the legendary Katzenberg during work on Mermaid : “ Die Hard had been a box-office hit. So he came into the office saying, ‘We need The Little Mermaid to be more Die Hard . That’s how we got the second action sequence, with an Ursula who is as big as the building in Nakatomi Plaza.”

He says that, even so, he prefers Katzenberg’s reign of terror to that which followed: “ Moana was a very difficult project. It was our idea, but with Pixar and John Lasseter, our story kept changing hands. In the ‘90s, we had Jeffrey. He was an emperor, you know. But there weren’t 10 Jeffreys. Now, you have too many people to satisfy, before we didn’t have 15 directors telling you how to make the movie. But in some ways, they were right, it was a good thing,” he says, conciliatory.

Not for nothing is Moana the most popular movie on streaming platforms, according to numbers that have been released by Nielsen. But Musker’s granddaughter is not a big fan. “I like Coco better,” her grandfather says she once told him. She is his hardest critic. Perhaps due to this harsh regime at home, he still got nervous a few months ago when he played his new, personal musical short — drawn over the course of five years — for his friends from university. That’s not as surprising if you keep in mind that these buddies include Pixar founder John Lasseter; the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas , Henry Selick and the director of The Iron Giant and The Incredibles , Brad Bird. Tim Burton also attended their school, in the year below them. In the short, which was also presented at Animayo, they all appear in caricature. As do his old bosses. They’re the villains.

Musker, who is tall and smiling, with a glowing complexion and floral shirts, could pass for any retired guy in Gran Canaria, resting after a life dedicated to business (in actuality he never stopped working, though he did retire from his post at Disney in 2018.) But this is not your average retiree: he’s the only one, for instance, who has been able to trap Aladdin ’s Genie. The character is immortalized in a watch made just for Musker, which he has worn on his wrist since the film’s debut in 1992. This modern magic lamp is a reference to the scene in which the character says he’s got an “itty bitty living space.” Musker is the creator of the iconic persona, and the man who directed Robin Williams in one of the best animated roles in the history of film. “Working on his hundreds of improvised takes is one of the most memorable moments of my life. That and the songs of Howard Ashman,” he says, still in mourning for the lyricist.

Ashman died from AIDS just before Beauty and the Beast debuted. He never saw the massive influence that his compositions would have. “He told us he was sick when he was already in the last months of his life. He lost his voice and couldn’t sing the last ones,” Musker says of the man who created songs like Kiss The Girl and Friend Like Me .

I'm Hip

Perhaps Ashman’s musicality is what was missing on the greatest failure of Musker’s career: “ Treasure Planet (2002) is a cult classic today, but its opening weekend was devastating. It was the movie that I had been trying to sell to Ron Clements since the ‘80s, and they took it so that we wouldn’t go to Dreamworks with Katzenberg, who we could never talk into it. They knew that was a good selling point to keep us at Disney. It did help keep us, at least for one movie. But after Treasure Planet , we couldn’t get another movie going at Disney. We thought it was because we had lost our credibility. It was another era of animation, and Disney was moving away from hand-drawn.” And then came the indecent proposal. “ After Toy Story , they proposed that we convert all the classic films into digital animation. I told them I’d commit harikari first,” he said, driving an invisible katana into his gut.

John Musker, Ron Clements

“The message should not get in the way of the emotion”

Like the actors who disappeared with the arrival of silent film, Musker might never have returned to the company where he even met his wife, who was a librarian in Mickey’s offices (perhaps the most atypical job there is in a movie studio). But despite everything, they brought him back in 2009 to update the Disney princess, once again, for The Princess and the Frog . And he pulled it off. “We weren’t trying to be woke, although I understand the criticism. The classic Disney films didn’t start out trying to have a message. They wanted you to get involved in the characters and the story and the world, and I think that’s still the heart of it. You don’t have to exclude agendas, but you have to first create characters who you sympathize with and who are compelling. I think they need to do a course correction a bit in terms of putting the message secondary, behind entertainment and compelling story and engaging characters,” says the animator, who recalls that on Aladdin , which debuted amid the Gulf War, he had to disguise the name Baghdad with its anagram Agrabah: “Because of the war, we couldn’t even go there to do research. Our big research took place at the Saudi Arabian expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center.”

La sirenita

Nor does he like every detail about his ideas being translated into new forms: “Companies are always like, ‘How do we reduce our risk? They like this, right? We’ll just do it again and sell it to them in a different form.’ Or they think, ‘Well, we could make it better.’ I think there was a question even with The Little Mermaid . They didn’t play up the father-daughter story, and that was the heart of the movie, in a way. And the crab — you could look at live animals in a zoo and they have more expression, like with The Lion King . That’s one of the basic things about Disney, is the appeal. That’s what animation does best.” Now it’s Moana ’s turn to get the live-action treatment. “I hope that they do it well, but we have nothing to do with it,” he says.

“If you do something that is animated, take advantage of all its qualities and imagination,” says the filmmaker, who has never made sequels, and who points out Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse , The Mitchells vs. the Machines , My Neighbor Totoro and the first Despicable Me for their use of all available tools. “I didn’t like the later ones so much,” he says.

At 70 years old, Musker is happy to keep making short films to keep himself entertained and learning new techniques that pertain to his passion for cartoons. He even captured his granddaughter (in I’m Hip ) humming along to his latest animated melody. He’s still hopeful about adapting Mort , from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, the book that he’s kept close throughout his entire career. No one wants to buy the story because they think it’s “too dark”: “It’s even hard for Henry Selick to sell projects. They’re just risk-averse. It’s like, we’re going to spend a lot of money and we want to make a lot of money.” Not even Steven Spielberg can get his every project greenlit. Musker warns: “Just like how in the seed of every failure is a success, in the seed of every success is failure. Too much control kills projects.”
