Wildlights At The Columbus Zoo And Aquarium Returns For A Spectacular Season

' src=

This post is sponsored by Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. But rest assured, all thoughts and opinions are our own.

Once again, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has undergone a magical transformation.

Powered with millions of LED lights, this winter wonderland display is one of the most popular family traditions during the holiday season around Columbus. Wildlights, efficiently powered by AEP Ohio, officially opens for guests today, Friday, November 17, 2023. The whimsical display will be open through Sunday, January 7, 2024.

The Wildlights and I were born the same year, and at 35, we’ve both got some pretty cool stuff going on. But let’s focus on the Wildlights. This year, there’s even more holiday cheer to be found.

Sounds of the Season will feature choirs, bands, and musical groups from a variety of local schools and organizations on select nights throughout the season. The 12 Days of Wildlights train ride will be themed to the Zoo’s very own rendition of the iconic song, the 12 days of Christmas. (You can see the lyrics here. )

columbus zoo wildlights tour

One of the must-visit area definitely includes the reindeer corral where you can stop in and see these furry fellas before they take off on their big journey around the world with Santa. And speaking of the man in charge…

The Santa Experience will offer families the chance to talk to Santa and then get a photo with him. There is no cost to come and chat with him, although photos do require additional purchases. You can schedule your visit in advance here.

Santa won’t be the only familiar face. Rudolph with his nose so bright will be joined by Hermey the Elf, Bumble the Abominable Snow Monster, and Yukon Cornelius for fan meet-and-greets. Guests can adventure into Bumble’s cave to meet the beloved characters of the Christmas classic TV special.

If you want to see the largest variety of animals, you’ll want to arrive at the zoo before it starts to get dark. Some animals may still be outside, depending on the weather, but you’ll also be able to see several species in their indoor enclosures.

Guests aged 21 and older have the opportunity to sample dozens of craft beers, ciders, and seltzers from various sampling locations throughout the park! Both full-size and tasting-size portions are available for purchase.

Jolliest Holiday craft beer tasting locations will be scattered throughout the Zoo and open Thursday through Sunday evenings starting at 5:00 p.m.

columbus zoo wildlights tour

Very large crowds are expected for Wildlights, so it’s always a good idea to arrive at the zoo a little early. Regular Zoo hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Wildlights activities take place Sunday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

If you’d like to avoid the crowds all together, the Zoo does offer one option that might just be perfect. You can book a private, 2-hour tour of the Wildlights. Available for groups of of 4, 6, or 10, you and your group will depart on a cart tour around the zoo, stopping by various animal enclosures and sipping complimentary hot chocolate along the way.

The Zoo will be closed on Thanksgiving Day (November 24) and Christmas Day (December 25), as well as for Wildlights on Christmas Eve (December 24). Wildlights are included with Zoo admission. Regular admission rates apply to all guests, and admission is free for Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Members. For additional updates about the Columbus Zoo, visit ColumbusZoo.org.

Wildlights boasts 3 million lights, Santa, camel rides, music and festive atmosphere

columbus zoo wildlights tour

The holiday season seems to kick into high gear earlier and earlier each year, but by necessity, the staff at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium gets an earlier start than most.

To prepare for the unveiling of the annual Wildlights attraction, zoo officials start setting up lights in early September — a process that remains ongoing even when “ Boo at the Zoo ” rolls around in October.

“We have a very small but mighty grounds maintenance team and facilities team that work pretty much day and night on putting up these lights from that point on,” said Jeffrey D. Glorioso, the director of events and promotions at the zoo.

This year’s edition of Wildlights will kick off Nov. 19, and continue nightly from 5 to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 5 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Jan. 2 (except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day). Masks are strongly recommended but not required for guests while indoors. (Wildlights will open for zoo members from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 18.)

As Glorioso sees it, zoo staff are just like any other family trying to tidy up for guests.

“It’s like when you have company for the holidays,” he said. “But we have 582 acres.”

For those keeping track, about 3 million LED lights will be used to illuminate trees, bushes and other greenery on the zoo grounds.

Things to do in Columbus: 10 top events this weekend: Dave Chappelle, D.L. Hughley, holiday fare

Wildlights has become a perennial holiday favorite in Greater Columbus. Zoo officials say that more than 7.5 million people have visited since the first edition in 1988, and more than 275,000 guests took in the sights during last year’s pandemic-era edition.

Even regular zoo-goers will find that Wildlights gives them a different perspective: Because the zoo usually closes before dark during other times of the year, Wildlights offers a unique nighttime view of the zoo.

“When you take almost 3 million lights and you spread it out over many regions of the zoo, and you have the music going, it’s an incredible experience,” Glorioso said.

Christmas trees: Planning on a Christmas tree yet, Ohio? Artificial trees may be hard to come by

Highlights of Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

Beyond the overall ambience, highlights include the Sparkling Spruce, a 42-foot artificial tree boasting 13,900 animated lights that shine brightly in the Adventure Cove; a light display at Conservation Lake; and numerous light balls suspended above guests’ heads at Shores Play Park.

Kid-friendly activities abound, including the bright, spinning splendor of the 1914 Mangels/Illions Grand Carousel ($2 per ride per person); a “S’mores Experience” at Conservation Lake, where visitors can make their own s’mores; and through Dec. 23, the presence of Santa Claus, who will be ready to accept wishes. Hot chocolate and other holiday treats will be available in abundance.

Portions of the zoo that house outdoor animals that will be nesting, including gorillas, will be closed, but other animals can be viewed during Wildlights.

“All of our indoor animal areas will be open, such as Manatee Coast, Discovery Reef, you’ll be able to see the indoor pachyderm area,” Glorioso said.

Camels will be on hand to offer rides ($7 per person).

The trick, of course, is to see everything.

Avoiding crowds and seeing it all

Glorioso says that if visitors make their way quickly through the attraction, they could get a sense of it in a few hours, but a longer look could take as long as three or four hours.

For those concerned about crowds, Glorioso suggests picking a chilly day or one just after a snowfall, when attendance might be down but the lights will be just as brilliant. (Dress appropriately, of course.)

“If it is 70 degrees in central Ohio, and you know it can happen, and it’s a beautiful night, everyone else has that idea: ‘Come to the zoo,’” he said. “If you do pick a colder night, or even during the weekday, it’s probably the best time.”

Wildlights returns to the Columbus Zoo with something for everyone

For the rest of the calendar year, when the sun goes down, visitors at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium will find themselves bathed in a different kind of light.

The zoo is putting on its annual Wildlights event from Friday through Jan. 2, 2022. Opening at 5 p.m. every night, Wildlights will feature roughly 3 million lights throughout the zoo, Kevin Rohrbacher, sales supervisor for the Columbus Zoo, said. The zoo will also feature rides and attractions, such as the Polar Bear Express and the S’mores Experience, which invites guests to roast marshmallows over a fire, according to the website .

“It’s just going to be an awesome place to come out and come hang with some friends, or bring a date,” Rohrbacher said. “Get out and enjoy some of the wintertime festivities we have out here.”

Additionally, Jeff Glorioso, director of events and promotions at the zoo, said the Columbus Zoo will feature several nights of appreciation for healthcare workers and first responders.

“Stuff The Truck” is a Dec. 3 event benefiting the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. Glorioso said guests who bring six non-perishable food items will receive free admission into the park for the night.

Due to the winter weather, some animals will not be able to participate in the festivities, Glorioso said. However, visitors will still have the chance to visit many fan favorites, such as the Manatee Coast exhibit, the zoo’s Discover Reef, the Reptile Lab and the elephants, which will be in an indoor area, he said.

Rohrbacher said the zoo has a program with Ohio State D-Tix, a campus organization that provides discounts for students, and encourages student groups to enjoy the festivities at a discounted price.

“It’d be great for fraternities, sororities, student organizations, whatever it is, to get out here, have a fun outing,” Rohrbacher said.

Glorioso said the zoo is for guests of all ages and visitors can come out, enjoy the Wildlights and have a great time, as long as they dress appropriately for the coming weather.

“You don’t have to have kids to come to the zoo,” Glorioso said. “You can come out and learn about animals and enjoy the holiday season.”

Wildlights is free to zoo members, while general entrance is $21.99 for non-Franklin County residents and $16.99 for Franklin County residents, according to Rohrbacher. There will also be discounts for seniors and youth.

How much are the tickets?

Hello Acquanetta, the regular price of an adult ticket is $19.99 for Franklin County residents or $29.99 for those outside Franklin County.

I bought mine and I live in Franklin County and I was still charged $29.99. The website is not user friendly and the Zoo will not help you adjust your price. I will not be returning next year. Poor customer service

We’re sorry to hear that you had a poor experience, Jenny. After entering the promotional code, you need to click on the ticket link that specifies Franklin County.

I’m not sure I got my free ticket with purchase BOGO

Judy, the Zoo will be happy to help with any issues. Contact them through their website or by phone at (614) 645-3400.

Why do people outside of Franklin County have to pay $10.00 more for a ticket? I was prepared to purchase tickets but since you want to discriminate against residents of other counties I will save my money and stay home. Merry Christmas to you and all your privileged Franklin County Residents.

Hi Brad. Franklin County residents support the Zoo through their taxes, and I’m sure the Zoo would be happy to answer any questions about their prices. They can be contacted through their website or at 614-645-3400.

Because Franklin County residents pay Property Taxes that support the zoo.

If you are willing to drive and pay $20 plus surely your plus one wants a sweet treat…what’s an extra $10 to support to wonderful zoo columbus offers. Does you county have a zoo? You should check that out.

I guess you would like to be taxed all year instead of paying 10.00 more once.. talk about acting privileged.. check yourself

Thank you for this offer! Very much appreciated!

When I select 2 adults it adds up to 50 and not 30 for aep

Hi Cassie, make sure you’re entering only the number of tickets that you plan to pay for. If you need tickets for two adults, make sure you’ve entered the promo code, then add one adult ticket to your cart. In your shopping cart, you’ll see the full price ticket plus the free one.

Is this event a stay in your warm vehicle and drive through or do you have to walk to see the lights?

Hi Sylia. The display is inside the zoo grounds so you have to leave your vehicle and walk. It’s pretty!

When does the BOGO offer end?

The offer and tickets expire January 7, 2024.

Do senior citizens get a discount?

Hi Andrew, the Zoo offers senior citizen rates for guests ages 60 and above. Enjoy the lights!

OK people living in Franklin county who support the zoo through their taxes get a discount which they deserve. Isn’t the zoo partly in Delaware county also? Do the people of Delaware county also support the zoo through their taxes?

This is a great question for the Zoo or Delaware County, Mark.

Delaware County residents do not pay zoo taxes.

Will tickets be sent via USPS or will you be able to get them on a mobile device?

Good question, Shanna. The Zoo can confirm this, but I believe they’re mobile tickets when purchased online. The Zoo can be reached at 614-645-3400.

Does this ticket entitle you to visit the animals at the zoo, or just the light show?

Great question, Joao. The tickets include Zoo admission just like regular admission tickets.

Please note that certain animals are not out and about at night, so you won’t see as many animals as during the day.

The Wildlights BOGO is not there – only showing normal tickets. Has the offer expired early?

Hi Ashley, the offer is still active. It’s not visible on the main tickets page. You need to enter the promotional code listed above.

Hi. Thank you

Yes to the price for residents outside of Franklin County especially when the Zoo is located in Delaware County!

Trying to purchase the tickets for Franklin County for $19.99 each. I used the promo code which should have my total at $19.99 + $2.00 processing fee. However, the total is $39.98 + $2.00 = 43.98

Does the promo apply to the Franklin County tickets?

Jennifer, did you add one ticket to your cart or two? Add one ticket for $19.99 to your cart and two will show up (the one you’re paying for plus the free one). The promotion does apply to Franklin County tickets.

So let me get this straight…. Tickets are 29.99 but they are buy 1 get 1 free ? How is this a deal when tickets are normally 15.99 until the Christmas lights start up? Shame on AEP and the Columbus Zoo…. This is not away to raise money for the Zoo!!!

General admission to the Columbus Zoo has not been $15.99 for a few years. It has been $29.99 at least for the past six months. Happy holidays to you!

Select only the number of tickets that you are planning to pay for. For example, if you have a group of six, you would pay for three tickets. Select the three tickets you need and click “Add To Cart.” In the “Shopping Cart” page, it will automatically apply the three free tickets for a total of six tickets. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN…I FOLLOWED THESE INSTRUCTIONS…AND PAID FOR THE TICKETS AND ONLY 1 TICKET SHOWED UP IN MY INBOX….THIS IS REALLY DISSATISFING AND CONFUSING…HOW DO I NOW GET THE OTHER TICKET??

Not sure what happened there, Allan. I would recommend checking your junk or spam email folder and giving the Zoo a call.

We live in Delaware County and go every year. The negative and rude comments on this page are ridiculous. Thank you AEP for the BOGO offer! Thank you Columbus Zoo for this event!

Since Midwest electric purchases electric from AEP can we use this discount?

Hi Tam, thank you for asking. This discount is limited to AEP Ohio customers.

Thank you very much for the BOGO offer! My family and I enjoy the lights every year.

You’re very welcome, Michelle!

Do we need to bring an AEP bill in to prove we are customers…or, just use the promo code like anyone else could use…customer or not?!

David, you do not need to show an AEP Ohio bill to take advantage of this offer.

Do we need to print out the tickets or just show the bar code on our phone?

The Zoo could answer that question for you, Renee.

Can I buy the tickets ( using the BOGO code) at the front gate or do I need to do this online?

Hi Kristi, it’s an online-only offer.

Celebrate the Magic of the Holiday Season During Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

By: jen fields, director of communications, nov 12 2020.

Powell, OH — ‘Tis the season to experience one of Central Ohio’s most cherished holiday traditions! Wildlights, efficiently powered by AEP Ohio, opens to the general public on Friday, November 20 and will run through Sunday, January 3, 2021 at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

This year’s Wildlights marks 32 years of offering this holiday cheer in our community, with some favorite attractions returning and other new opportunities being offered! The entire Zoo will be transformed into a winter wonderland covered in over 3 million LED lights, and some of the main attractions include:

  • Sparkling Spruce , presented by Meyers Jewelers, featuring two animated light displays, “Candela: The Evolution of Light” and “Holiday Cheer,” located in Adventure Cove
  • Animated Light Displays , including “Holiday Rhythms Around the Watering Hole” at Conservation Lake, and “Jingle Ball,” presented by Nationwide, at the Shores Play Park
  • Wildlights Rides , including the Polar Bear Express , a train ride through the North America Winter Wonderland; Camel Rides , located in the North America region; and the 1914 Mangels-Illions Carousel , a historic Central Ohio treasure located near the Columbus Dispatch Charities Grand Pavilion. Additional fees may apply.
  • S’mores Experience - New for 2020, this socially-distanced activity allows guests to gather around a glowing fire to roast their own giant marshmallow. After roasting, seating is available for guests to assemble their own warm and gooey s'more while taking in our animated light display from the shores of Conservation Lake. Advance purchase is strongly encouraged as space is limited. Guests can add a S'mores Experience ticket to any timed entry reservation for Wildlights.
  • Santa Experience at Polar Frontier , located in the North America Region at the Battelle Ice Bear Outpost. Enjoy the ability to speak with Santa, as well as take part in a safe and fun photo opportunity, while still maintaining social distancing. Please see the “Know Before You Go” section below for more information. Please note that Santa will not be available after December 23 due to other obligations.

Tours and Experiences

This year, you can add to your Wildlights experience and enjoy a unique opportunity to create family memories! Featured experiences include:

  • Reindeer Encounter – NEW for 2020! Enjoy an up-close experience with the Zoo’s adorable reindeer! During this exclusive opportunity, guests will spend time with the Animal Care team while visiting the reindeer in their habitat to learn more about the care and conservation of this species.*
  • Wildlights Sea Lion Encounter – NEW for 2020! Join some of the newest faces at the Zoo for a special Wildlights Sea Lion Encounter! Learn about this outgoing species, as well as other opportunity in Adventure Cove, and don’t forget to smile! Your sea lion encounter includes one 5” x 7” souvenir photo to take home as a memory of this special experience.*
  • Wildlights Tour : You can enjoy Wildlights after most of the other guests have left by booking a Wildlights Tour. You will be escorted around the Zoo in a VIP golf cart while snuggling up under a warm blanket with a mug of hot chocolate. It’s the perfect experience for those looking for holiday fun with family or friends.*

*Additional fees apply and advance reservations are required. For more information about these opportunities and other tours and experiences, please visit the Zoo’s website .

Know Before You Go

  • Regular Zoo hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily. Wildlights activities take place Sunday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m,. and on Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • The Zoo will be closed Thanksgiving Day (November 26) and Christmas Day (December 25), as well as for Wildlights on Christmas Eve (December 24).
  • Wildlights is included with Zoo admission. Regular admission rates apply to all guests, and admission is free for Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Members.
  • Please note that all Zoo visits (including for Members) will require a dated, timed ticket to help ensure that social distancing and other precautions are followed appropriately.

However, starting on November 19 (through the remainder of Wildlights), Columbus Zoo Members can enjoy the Zoo BEFORE 3 p.m. without a reservation when a valid Columbus Zoo membership card and photo ID are presented at the turnstile. After 3 p.m., Members will then be required to reserve an entry time for admission to enjoy Wildlights.
  • All of our other guests will continue to be required to make advance reservations for timed entry throughout the entire day/evening of Wildlights. No walkups will be permitted
  • All reservations can be made online by visiting the Zoo’s Re-Opening Plan .

Each group that enters the building will not exceed more than 10 people, and each party will move through the facility following markings while remaining at least 6 feet away from other guests, the photographer and Santa. Guests will have the ability to speak with Santa while socially distanced, as well as get a photo looking out a window while Santa is in his sleigh and a few of his reindeer adorn the “housetop.” This custom-made setting was inspired by the “Up on the Housetop” song written by Benjamin Hanby in 1864. Hand sanitizer will be available at the check-in station and at the photo sales station. Strollers will be permitted inside the building but not near the photo set.
