Visit to the Toyota factory

toyota plant tour in japan

See the manufacturing processes that have made Toyota the world’s most successful carmaker up close with a tour of its main plant.

Only One Travel highly recommends visiting Japan’s largest automaker, Toyota. The company’s headquarters are located in Toyota City, just outside Nagoya, and tours in English of the high-tech plants are available on most days. During the tour, you will be shown the complete process of the production line, including Toyota’s revolutionary multi-model system that enables the production of all vehicle models on the same production line. The pneumatic seat used by assembly line workers is also a must see in operation and was amazingly the result of a staff entry in the suggestion box. The seat is now a key element in all Toyota production lines around the world.

The Toyota Factory Tour is a must-see for all car fans and anyone interested in Japan’s industrial development.

Visit the Toyota Factory Tour Museum

The Toyota Factory museum is free to enter and you do not need a guide to explore it.  As we had arrived early for our tour we spent an hour exploring.

You also get to look around at all the cars that Toyota hopes you will buy. The best was the car fitted for those with disabilities.  It’s possible to sit in most of the cars and really check them out while you’re here.

Toyota Factory Tour Museum

One of the best things about the Toyota Museum Japan is the fact that they have a robot that has an artificial lung that plays the trombone. And it is pretty damned cool.

Our Experience of the Toyota Factory Tour in Japan

As on the Mazda tour , there are no photos allowed on the tour of the Toyota plant. And when we head off we’re bussed between various parts of the plant, which is impressive and incredibly efficient.

We see several parts of the production line. We learn about just-in-time manufacturing and how quality is valued over quantity and speed.

Toyota Factory Tour Production System

It’s interesting that I thought it would be groundbreaking and look like it.  But it looks like a regular production line until you look a little closer.  Their multi-model lines are designed to build multiple models on the same line, which is pretty awesome.

There are way more people involved in the production lines than I expected (there are 7,500 people employed here in the Nagoya factory), and many fewer Toyota factory robots than I anticipated.

Perhaps I’m missing something, but the Mazda factory tour beats it hands down.  However, if you’re in Nagoya, then you shouldn’t miss this tour.  And yes, a reminder, it’s free.

It was good. But was it great? No. So I left Toyota, the car in front, feeling like it was definitely the brand behind after my trip to their factory.

And that’s interesting (to me at least). That in my trip to Japan, I’ve had my brand perceptions turned on their head.  Mazda , who I felt pretty ho-hum about – I’m now gung ho about. Toyota is the opposite. Those instant noodle packets that I saw in shops and thought, pah, no, looks cheap and nasty are now the ones that I will buy above all others. Yup, I’m definitely sold on Cup Noodles. Oh, and Asahi beer. Yup, I’ll take that and the  Asahi free brewery tour  and tasting over a poor Sapporo beer and tour and expensive beer hall experience any day.

Just goes to show, that when you dig in a little, perception differs wildly from reality. Now, if only I were in the market for a car… I suppose I’ll make do with cup noodles and beer!

The last word, though goes to the robot… he’s not quite  Asimo , but he plays a mean tune…

Alternatives to the Toyota Factory Tour

As the Toyota Factory Tour is currently CLOSED, then we recommend the following alternatives

The Mazda Factory Tour

Another free car factory tour, this is easy to get to and also close to Nagoya.  You can read more about it here .

The Toyota Techno Museum

This is also known as the Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology, or the Toyota Museum Nagoya.  It is located in central Nagoya.  There is no factory here but you’ll find a lot of exhibits on the car production process.

The Toyota Techno Museum is easily reached from Sako station and is close to Nagoya station.  The museum is open from 09:30 to 17:00, the last entry is 16:30 and admission is 500 yen.  The museum is closed on Mondays and also on Tuesdays if Monday is a national holiday.

The Toyota Automobile Museum

This museum displays cars from the late 1800s onwards from Europe, Japan, and America.  You will find it close to Geidaidori Station.   The museum is open from 09:30 to 17:00, with the last entry at 16:30.  The museum is closed on Mondays, and also Tuesdays if the Monday is a National Holiday.  Entrance is 1000 yen.

Other Free Factory Tours in Japan

The Toyota Factory tour is just one of those available when you visit Japan.  Here are other factory tours that we recommend for your visit to Japan.

The Mazda factory tour:  Another great free car factory tour – perhaps even better than the Toyota Factory Tour.

The Asahi Brewery tour : Available at 8 locations throughout Japan this tour not only provides an understanding of Asahi’s history but also gives you free beer tasting at the end – and they’re not small measures!

The  Cup Noodle factory – There are several places where you can visit a cup noodle museum in Japan, but for us visiting the birthplace of noodles in Ikeda was on the list.  Make your own cup noodles here.

If you’re looking for unique experiences in Japan, then I highly recommend heading to watch Sumo practice in Tokyo and experiencing a Maid Cafe in Akihabara too.

Toyota Plant Tour

Visit a real assembly line of the famous car company

José Manuel Zardain

Toyota is not only famous for its cars. The company’s lean and optimisation standards created a new industrial philosophy. Companies would later integrate them into their own organizations to improve processes, final products and customers' experiences. Visiting a Toyota plant in Japan and observing this philosophy being applied is not only an amazing educational experience but also an eye opener into the technology, quality, and standards of Japanese industry.

Located very close to Nagoya (Aichi’s prefectural capital), the city of Toyota is an important hub of the company. Several manufacturing plants and corporate buildings are here. Toyota’s Kaikan museum is in the city as well and it’s from here that the company’s plant tours begin.

The perfectly well organised tour starts with a fifteen minutes bus shuttle from the museum to one of the plants. The group walks into the plant and observes the production of cars and components from a platform that goes around all the assembly line. The guide walks with all visitors while explaining important philosophies of Toyota. All of them can be observed being applied just below.

Two of the most important pillars of Toyota’s production system are “Just in Time” and “Jidoka.” The objective of the first one is to eliminate all possible waste by producing what is needed, when is needed, and in the amount needed. The second pillar’s objective is to build quality in each of the process. Both of this pillars are explained and observed in real life during the plant’s tour.

The visit inside the plant lasts one hour. It is extremely interesting to observe the different production stages. The tour guides the visitors from the very beginning of the assembly of a car to a completed one.

There is a strict no photography or video policy inside the plant. You must leave all electronic devices in the locks at the Kaikan museum or at the bus.

Although the tour is free, you must make a reservation first. Every day, several Japanese tours are offered, but only one in English. Plan ahead because spaces are limited and fill up fast. To make a reservation, go here.

A small but interesting note about Toyota is that the founder's last name was actually 'Toyoda'. If written in katakana (one of the Japanese writing systems along with hiragana and kanji), Toyoda needs ten strokes. Toyota instead, needs only eight strokes. This number is a lucky number because when written in kanji, the bottom is wider. It indicates that something or someone is growing.

Hope you enjoy the Toyota tour!

Toyota Factory Tour – Lean Characteristics

Tps, jidoka, just-in-time production.

Toyota is the home of the Toyota Production System (TPS). The lean manufacturing movement is based around the management principles, tools and culture that Toyota has been developing for over 60 years.

Supported by the two key pillars of Jidoka (a Japanese word that can be translated as “automation with a human touch”) and Just-In-Time, TPS aims to offer high quality, short delivery times, and reasonable cost through employee creativity and intense efforts to eliminate waste. It is designed so that machines and people alike stop production when there is equipment failure or any other irregularity in order for it to be immediately corrected. Also, it improves productivity without waste by manufacturing and delivering the necessary parts at the necessary time in the necessary quantity.

Shinka Management has shop floor-level access to the final assembly plant that produce the Toyota HiAce and the Toyota Coaster for Toyota Motor Corporation – facilities that are not open to the general public.

A factory visit includes access to welding (body shop), assembly and inspection lines. Unlike free public factory tours offered by Toyota (currently suspended indefinitely following the pandemic) which focus on general themes, Shinka Management tours focus on the application of the Toyota Production System and are led by one of our Sensei formerly from the Toyota Group.

The factory visit incorporates content on the two pillars of the Toyota Production System; Jidoka and Just-In-Time. The tour provides a close-up view of 5S, standard work, visual management, karakuri, poka-yoke, AGV (automated guided vehicle) and kanban application, with questions taken both on the shop floor and in a Q&A session following the visit.

Toyota shows ‘an engine reborn’ with green fuel despite global push for battery electric cars

TOKYO (AP) — “An engine reborn.”

That’s how Japanese automaker Toyota introduced plans to cast a futuristic spin on the traditional internal combustion engine.

During a three-hour presentation at a Tokyo hall Tuesday, the car manufacturer giant announced it would offer lean compact engines that also run on so-called green fuels like hydrogen and bioethanol, or get paired with zero-emissions electric motors in hybrids.

This comes as many competitors in the auto industry are pushing for fully electric vehicles. China is revving its push for Battery Electric Vehicles , and its own BYD is threatening to outshine Tesla in that push.

Toyota’s Chief Executive Koji Sato said the “engine is optimized for the electrification era” with hopes of helping push the world into “carbon neutrality.”

Toyota already has a well-known hybrid car — the Prius — with a gas engine and an electric motor. It switches between the two to deliver a cleaner drive.

In future hybrids, the electric motor is set to become the main driving power, and the new engine will be designed to take a lesser role and help it along, according to Toyota.

FILE - Oregon resident Patrick Coffin fills up his car at a gas station in Portland, Ore., Aug. 4, 2023. New vehicles sold in the U.S. will have to average about 38 miles per gallon of gasoline in 2031 in real world driving, up from about 29 mpg this year, under new federal rules unveiled Friday, June 7, 2024, by the Biden administration. President Joe Biden has set a goal that half all of new vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2030 are electric. (AP Photo/Claire Rush, File)

Domestic allies Subaru Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp. , both preparing ecological engines designed to meet the inevitably upcoming stringent emissions standards, joined Toyota ‘s presentation billed as a “multi-pathway workshop.”

“Each company wants to win, but we can be faster if we work together,” said Sato.

But details on when the engines were coming to market weren’t disclosed.

The legacy of the car engine could be felt everywhere.

Mazda said that its prized rotary engine, introduced more than 50 years ago, was being adapted for electric vehicles.

Subaru, meanwhile, showcased its trademark smaller horizontally opposed engine. While Chief Technology Officer Tetsuro Fujinuki confirmed the company was working on a great “Subaru-like” electric vehicle, he said the company wasn’t about to dump the engine altogether.

Toyota, too, is working on stylish BEVs .

The executives said Tuesday that energy supply conditions differed globally, adding that products had to meet various customer needs and the investments needed for mass-producing BEVS were enormous.

Toyota officials also repeatedly noted that 5.5 million jobs were at stake in the overall supply chain for vehicle production in Japan nowadays, so a sudden shift to electric cars wasn’t economically possible or socially responsible.

Takahiro Fujimoto, a professor of business at Waseda University, believes electric vehicles are a key solution for reducing emissions. But they still have weak points, such as large amounts of emissions produced while making lithium-ion batteries, a chief component.

In Japan, for instance, commuters use trains, so that may be a better ecological choice for transportation, Fujimoto said.

“At the very least, I believe the proliferation of and innovations in BEVs are definitely needed. But that argument is logically not the same as saying that all we need are BEVs,” he said.

Uncertainties remain, spanning research and development, as well as social, political and market conditions, said Fujimoto.

“The carbon neutrality the world is aspiring toward isn’t likely attainable for decades to come. It’s going to be a long marathon race,” he said.

Toyota to convert US plant in Indiana for electric cars

Toyota is increasing its investments in the production of electric cars and batteries in North America. The Japanese company will invest $1.4 billion in its car plant in Princeton, Indiana, to build a new electric model and assemble battery packs.

toyota plant tour in japan

All Toyota has revealed about the new BEV model, which it will build in Indiana, is that it is a three-row SUV – probably with six or seven seats, depending on the layout. It is in line with the latest rumours that Toyota wants to convert its Highlander into an all-electric model. It is thus possible that the electric Toyota Highlander will be built in Indiana.

In February , Toyota announced investments totalling 1.3 billion dollars in its vehicle plant in the US state of Kentucky to produce electric cars and install a battery pack assembly line. Toyota will also build a large electric SUV in Kentucky. The seven-seater will be a completely new model. As Toyota omitted that part of the description about the SUV for India, it adds to our assumption that it will be the electric version of the Highlander.

What’s more, the combustion versions of the Toyota Highlander, Grand Highlander and Sienna series, as well as the Lexus TX model derived from the Grand Highlander, are built in Princeton. The Highlander, now in its fourth generation, is a 4.95 metre long SUV with in-line four-cylinder and V6 petrol engines – and as a hybrid version.

However, it remains a speculation until Toyota confirms it. What is certain is that the billion-dollar investment in Princeton will create up to 340 new jobs, presumably mainly in battery assembly. The cells for this will be produced at Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina , which cost about 14 billion dollars. It will start production in 2025 and manufacture battery cells for battery-electric models and plug-in hybrids.

“We take great pride in producing quality products while providing long-term, stable employment no matter the changes in our industry”, says Tim Hollander, president of Toyota Indiana. “Our team is committed to delivering this new product with the same quality and performance that Toyota customers expect.”

A Sanctuary on the Road For customers who seek premium experiences in a vehicle, keeping unwanted noise out is paramount. The 2025 Toyota Crown Signia’s cabin brings that priority quietly home. Rather than simply aiming at a “numbers” goal for sound level (decibels), Toyota engineers created a calm atmosphere conducive to enjoying easy conversation or hearing music in cleaner detail. The Toyota Crown Signia is assembled at the Tsutsumi Plant in Aichi, Japan and uses the same TNGA-K platform that underpins the Crown sedan.

The high-strength TNGA-K platform is the first defense against noise intrusion, curbing vibration through the steering, floor and structure. Suspension tuning resists road surface disturbances and tire noise is reduced via strategically placed insulation and thoughtful tire/wheel construction. Engineers also undertook extensive analysis of noise transmission paths and filled spaces around door frames, window openings and wiring harnesses for enhanced cabin quietness. Even the inner rocker and bulkhead are connected with adhesive to minimize noise.

The Toyota Crown Signia also uses acoustic glass on the front driver and passenger side windows to minimize noise in the cabin. Insulation and body sealing material are placed throughout the structure, between the engine bay and cabin, under the carpeting and above the headliner for additional sound-deadening. The materials and their placement were optimized to minimize noise in the frequencies that typically interfere with conversation.

The Signature Hybrid The 2025 Crown Signia is equipped with the Toyota Hybrid System (THS), standard. This system’s primary components include a 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine, a hybrid transaxle, and a bi-polar Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery. All these systems work together, using a combination of a gas engine and electric motors to drive the vehicle’s wheels for a balance of optimum power and fuel efficiency, depending on the driving conditions.

The hybrid transaxle houses four components: two electric motor-generators (MG1 and MG2); a single planetary gear; and a reduction gear to the final drive. MG1 serves primarily as a generator, driven by the gasoline engine, and provides a charge to hybrid battery. It also serves as the engine’s starter motor. MG2 drives the front wheels alone or in tandem with the internal combustion engine as needed. MG2 also acts as a generator, recovering kinetic energy when coasting or braking and converting it to electrical charge for the battery. In certain conditions, MG2 can also power the vehicle in full electric (EV) mode at low speeds.

The Crown Signia’s 230.4V bi-polar NiMH traction battery has a capacity of 5.0 Ahr and stores electricity for use by the motor generators. The battery is a compact unit that is located entirely beneath the rear seats, avoiding any intrusion in the rear cargo area. Its bi-polar construction helps reduce the overall battery size and weight, and benefits performance, since bipolar electrodes minimize the internal electrical resistance.

The 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine uses variable valve timing to utilize the efficiency of Atkinson cycle operation. This timing provides a shorter compression stroke and longer power stroke, resulting in excellent fuel efficiency and low emissions. The engine turns MG1 to charge the battery and provides power to the front wheels alongside MG2. Pairing this engine with Crown Signia’s standard electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission provides exceptionally smooth, shift-free power delivery.

Crown Signia also comes standard with selectable NORMAL, ECO and SPORT driving modes that let the driver tailor drivetrain performance. SPORT mode sharpens throttle response, enhancing the fun-to-drive experience. ECO mode changes the throttle and climate control logic to maximize efficiency, while NORMAL mode is ideal for everyday driving. Additionally, an EV (Electric Vehicle) mode allows electric-only driving at low speeds for short distances.

Overall, the Toyota Hybrid System delivers an EPA-estimated 39/37/38 MPG (city/highway/combined) rating and the Crown Signia can go from zero to 60 MPH in 7.1 seconds.

toyota plant tour in japan

Elevated Handling with Standard AWD The Toyota Crown Signia delivers the best of both worlds: sedan-like driving comfort and SUV versatility. It has a 6.7-inch ground clearance, 74-inch overall width, and 112.2-inch wheelbase for a firmly planted, car-like feel. The 25.8-inch hip point gives it a lifted seating position for easy ingress and egress and an elevated view of the road.

Equipped with Toyota’s electronic On-Demand AWD standard, the Crown Signia’s AWD system takes maximum advantage of the hybrid powertrain’s benefits while also being capable of towing up to 2,700 pounds.

Instead of using a transfer case and driveshaft to send power to the rear wheels, the AWD system employs a separate rear-mounted electric motor (MGR) to send power to the rear wheels when needed, like when cornering or in slippery conditions. The front and rear wheel driving force distribution is precisely controlled between 100:0 and 20:80, for enhanced fuel efficiency and comfortable driving performance. MGR not only provides power to the rear wheels but can also deliver power proactively in ideal conditions to improve driving dynamics and act as a generator, providing charge to the Hybrid battery when coasting or braking.

A blend of lightweight, high-strength materials support rigidity, like a ring frame structure in the rear, a combination of plate spot and laser welds on the body, and the use of structural adhesive throughout the frame. The steering gearbox is mounted directly to the suspension cross member for a direct steering feel that minimizes line correction. Aero-stabilizing underbody panels with a “stepped” texture help control airflow under the vehicle a firmly planted ride.

Toyota Crown Signia’s suspension consists of a MacPherson-type strut in the front and multilink rear suspension. Toyota engineers focused on reducing vibrations felt by the driver and passengers and have equipped Crown Signia’s suspension with swing valve shock absorbers, a soft suspension bushing, and a dynamic damper on the front suspension. Polyurethane coated coil springs in the front help provide a smooth ride and high-damping structural adhesive on the body and reinforced seat mounting points reduces shake generated by the road.

Toyota Crown Signia’s handling is bolstered by an electronically controlled brake system featuring Active Cornering Assist, which engages the stability control to reduce understeer in certain cornering situations, so the driver feels the enhanced agility, not the system’s operation.

Creature Comfort for All Toyota Crown Signia keeps drivers and passengers plugged-in when it comes to charging devices. A vertical wireless Qi charger with charge indicator in the middle console holds a device in place while charging and maximizes space. There are also three USB-C and a 12V charging port for use in the front seat, standard. For rear seat passengers, two USB-Type C ports are standard.

The front seat cup holder is designed with everyday functionality in mind. Its recessed design helps prevent drinks from spilling over to the shifter side and there is also a partition in the middle of the cup holder, maximizing its utility to fit long items like phones, tablets, and wallets. Bottle holders add storage on the front doors, along with one water bottle holder on each rear door.

toyota plant tour in japan

In the rear, passengers will enjoy the comfort and convenience of dedicated air vents, two cup holders, a rear bottle holder, and seatback pockets standard.
