This was a great little restaurant. We showed up with no reservation and were seated with no problems. The food was really good. The offer a 1 to 3 course menu with 3 options for each course. It was 38 euro total. That was an... amazing value. We had the crab and salmon for entree, duck for main and some ice cream concoction for desert. The crab appetizer was basically a giant unfried crabcake. The duck was delicious and I don't even like duck. The dessert was a bit wanting as it just had too much going on. The waiters were very friendly and accommodated our very poor french. The only complaint were offered red or white wine and had no idea what it was. I mean the red wine was great though. Overall, a great little restaurant for good value. More
Great, naturally happy atmosphere, we arrived at 7:45p or so, just as the resto was just getting started for the evening. Rather than keeping us waiting, the bartender checked the reservation book and seated us and our waiter was quickly back into the dining room... to find out what we’d like to get started. We were never rushed but the service was attentive and the atmosphere was upbeat. As the restaurant started to fill there was a bit of everything—young couples, families, some students, etc. We really enjoyed the menu: 3 or 4 choices in each major category (entrée, plat, dessert), all easily understood and the waiter easily moved back and forth from English to French. The pricing made sense. The food itself, was well prepared and well-presented. If we were locals Le Chien Jaune would be a definite keeper! More
Our hotel recommended this place for having an amazing Parisian chef without the Parisian prices. The restaurant is in large alley that’s a little bit sketchy and it’s not very big. They only have a menu for the day and you may order appetizer and... main and/or dessert from the short list. I got the salad with foie gras slices which was refreshing and delicious. My chicken with warm foie gras and mushrooms was amazing. There were pieces of pasta that tasted like gnocchi too which were so good! My dessert - Charlotte cake with chocolate mousse and toasted hazelnut was also very good but I was too full to finish it. I cannot believe it was only 39 euros for 3 courses. I would absolutely eat here again. More
We stayed in Tours for a night and our hotel was right next door. Having our little daughter with us and tired after a long journey, we decided to eat at the restaurant. What a little gem! The food was incredible, wonderful service. Highly recommend.... The only thing I would say is that they could do with some background music :) More
My wife and I have lived in France for 5 years and this has to be the worst dining experience we have had. When we arrived a waiter "pointed" to a table squashed up in the corner before agreeing we could sit at one of... the other available tables for two. We then sat and waited for at least 10 minutes before any of the other waiters arrived at the table with a menu for us to look at. No apologies for the wait, nor any enquiry as to whether we would like an aperitif whilst choosing from the menu. After a further 5 minutes or so a waiter arrived at the table to take our order. I chose a main course of entrecôte steak (asking for it to be cooked saignant/bloody as I always do) and my wife ordered tornado of pork. The tables were so small for two people that when the food arrived there was little space for the main dishes and side plates but the waiter made no attempt to clear away any of the glasses that were not required. However, notably, he did provide an additional table for the French lady and her young daughter on the table next to ours! No bread was offered until we had started our meals. My steak was cooked saignant but was sinewy with a lot of fat and so I left a substantive inedible portion on the side of my plate. We both then heard the waiter behind me having a joke with his colleague, in French, that I had left the steak because I had ordered it to be cooked saignant! The deserts were unimaginative. In summary, the food was poor value and the lack of polite service was unacceptable. More
We had an evening meal here whilst in Tours overnight. There wasn’t a huge choice on the menu, but we both selected the pork chop. When our food was served we noticed the pork had a peanut garnish on it - this was a bit... of an issue as my husband has a severe peanut allergy. We forgot to mention this when ordering, but on the menu there was no mention of nuts in this meal. With the help of google translate the waiter eventually understood that my husband could not eat this meal and sent it back to the kitchen, they brought it out again, the chef had merely scrapped the peanuts off with some still remaining in the dish. My husband explained he would prefer to have the steak instead. Meanwhile - my meal was absolutely excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed it. When my husbands steak arrived he was very impressed. The waiter dealt with us well and on bringing the bill, had only charged us for our original choices, not the additional cost of the steak which was a very kind gesture in the circumstances. A restaurant definitely worth trying out when in Tours with perfect French ambience. More
We stayed in Tours for 1night on 31/01/2019 on our way home to Le Lot. We found this gem of a restaurant on a cold wet evening and once inside found a classic French Bistro, after 5 weeks in Vietnam and Cambodia we were looking... forward to a change we were not disapointed the food and wine was excellent and the cheese selection was incredible. We will definately dine here again when we visit Tours More
If the title doesn't give it away, please make sure you actually do stay away! The rudest staff I've ever experienced and a chef who sat in the restaurant and clearly had no intention of cooking. When we turned up as a group for a... meal we had booked two weeks in advance for a family celebration we were told we HAD to order from the set menu...no other choices could be made. This was bad enough but then when we actually ordered from the said set menu they only had two staters left! (We were a group of 12) .... No apology no attempt to rectify the situation....so in true french style we launched a rebellion and walked out only to hear the chef tell the waiters he 'couldn't give a s***'.. Don't waste your time or energy.... This is not quirky french style this is downright rude...plain and simple. More
The atmosphere is casual, with fun decorations. The staff is friendly but does not speak English. The manager speaks English and was very friendly. He translated the menu for us, which helped a lot. Our appetizer (shrimp grilled on a skewer) was better than our... entree of steak (a bit chewy). The place has a convenient location, next door to the Office of Tourism and across the street from an ATM. Service was good, food just average. A bit on the expensive side, but that is typical for France. More
Our tour guide recommended this restaurant to us so we thought we'd give it a try. The waiter was surly and unfriendly even as we sat down. When we changed our minds about eating here and walked out, we left to a chorus of sarcastic... cat calls from the waiting staff. Not very grown up or sophisticated! Another couple from our tour party did eat here but said it was very disappointing and, again, that the attitude of the waiters left a lot to be desired. Tourists can and will vote with their feet and you will lose your reputation and trade. Our tour guide won't be recommending you to her clients any more - think of the potential lost trade. More
Our first meal in France and what a bitter disappointment. None of the four of us enjoyed it. The duck was sent back it was so dry and over micro-waved and the accompanying potatoes were a greasy, soggy mess. The so-called sea bass was also... ruined. We were not charged for the duck and the chef actually apologised. It also seemed to be full of English speaking tourists which surprised us as our taxi driver recommended it - one hopes it was not the best in Tours! More
This restaurant came highly recommended to us and, in fact, the first night we tried to go—mid-week at that—it was full and we couldn’t get a place, so we made a reservation for the following night. The food was just okay, nothing special, but the... attitude and the service were inexcusable. They weren’t especially busy and yet the wait staff hustled around, very rushed, completely inattentive to customers. I thought in contrast about some of the very busy restaurants we’d been in (L’Étable, La Souris Gourmande) where the staff had efficiently and graciously served without ever seeming rushed and with attentiveness to customers. At Au Chien Jaune, we were treated very brusquely. My husband felt the treatment of French customers was in preference to others, maybe even especially in contrast to Americans. I can’t say for sure that this was the case, but we were definitely treated in a demeaning manner and would never go there again. More
Our family was on a five day tour, all of the accommodations and dining was all pre-planned and pre-paid. This is the only establishment that did not honor its voucher. The service when we walked in was terrible. We were left just waiting for about... 20 mins before they decided they wouldn't honor the voucher. Needless to say the tour company we used was highly upset and wont be doing business with them any longer. More
Dear, We remember very well about you 8 month after. The Voucher that you give to us was very weird. That's why we didn't took it. But you still had dinner in our restaurant and the service we give you was really pleasant. You give... More
Looking for local place with interesting choice so chose this and wasn't disappointed. Went for the three course fixed price, all were excellent, tasty, good blend of flavours and sensible sized portions.
Dear, Thank you for your testimonial. We are happy that you spend a good time in our restaurant. Best Regards, L'équipe du restaurant Le Chien jaune
Great food. Three guys on a business dinner. Arrived late for standards , around 9.00 Pm Winter time, with no problem. Great cheese table, great meat and great wine. Price balanced with quality. Highly Recommend it for meat and wine.
