Kasol to Rasol Trek: Spending the night at 2500 meters

Last update on:

Rasol is a remote Himalayan village in Himachal Pradesh, India. It is only accessible by foot and Kasol is a popular starting point for this trek. We spent 2 weeks in Kasol in May of 2023, attending its infamous psy-trance parties and spending the rest of the time hiking and exploring remote Himalayan villages like Rasol and Grahan. Read about hiking to Grahan in our other article here .

Need to know

  • Our Rating: ★★★ Rasol itself isn’t anything special, but the views and onward trekking opportunities are!
  • Time: 2-3 days
  • Costs: approx. €20 per person
  • Difficulty: moderate — 3-5 hours hiking depending on fitness

This guide contains everything you need to know to trek from the town of Kasol, to the remote hilltop village of Rasol.

Where is Rasol?

How to get to kasol, hiking to rasol from kasol, what to do in rasol village, back to rasol, accommodation in chalal, accommodation in kasol, safety, concerns and useful information, what to do next.

Rasol is a remote and isolated town, high up in the Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh in India. Getting to Rasol is only possible by foot, and hiking there takes the best part of half a day. It is situated north west of Kasol, at an elevation of around 2500 metres , or 8200 feet above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the snow capped mountains of the Himalayas. It offers onward trekking routes over Rasol pass to the neighbouring valley of Malana . An area very famous for hashish!

Start of the hike up to Rasol from Chalal

Via New Delhi / Chandigarh

There are over a dozen direct buses to and from the capital of New Delhi every day. These buses are mostly overnight sleeper buses, and take around 12-14 hours in total to travel the 500 kilometre route, stopping at the city of Chandigarh on the way. Tickets are available for purchase online, and often sell out days in advance. Make sure you book in advance if you intend to use this option. You can check bus ticket prices to and from Kasol via Delhi here.

Via Local Bus

If, like us, you are exploring the surrounding area in towns such as Shimla , or Manali , you can utilise the local bus companies to travel around Himachal Pradesh. From Manali or Shimla, you need to take a local bus first to Bhuntar . From Bhuntar there are local buses every 30 minutes or so that go directly to Kasol. Buses leave from the Bhuntar Bus Stand , and travel up into the Parvati Valley, stopping at Kasol and other towns on the way. If you prefer AC and a more comfortable ride, you can book buses from Manali, Shimla or Bhuntar to Kasol on 12go.asia here.

Cows are frequent dinner guests in Kasol

The trail to Rasol starts from the centre of Kasol town. Crossing the Rasol Bridge to the other side of the river, the trail will take you first to the small town of Chalal . This stretch of the trek is around 1.5-2 kilometres and should take you only 30-60 minutes . Chalal in itself is a destination worth visiting. Only accessible by foot, this small town sits on the other side of the Parvati River from Kasol, and offers a number of accommodation and food options.

Donkeys on the way to Rasol

After walking through the centre of Chalal towards the mountains, you join the main path to Rasol. The distance from this point is about 3 kilometres , with about 700 metres of vertical elevation. Depending on your fitness level it should take you 1.5-3 hours to reach the top. About half way up there is a small cafe with an old man selling drinks and snacks. This cafe is called Nature View Cafe , and the views really don’t disappoint. We took the time here to refuel with a cup of hot chai and some biscuits before continuing with the ascent.

The view from Kasol bridge as you head towards Chalal

The trail is mostly rocky, muddy and steep. Your only companions on the trail are likely to be donkeys, carrying supplies to and from the village on their backs. For us it was quite hard going, especially in the almost 30 c degree heat of the middle of the day. After around 2 hours total, you begin to pass the initial houses and buildings of Rasol.

Rasol village is a mixture of local houses, accommodations and a few restaurants. Other than sleeping and eating, there really isn’t much to do in Rasol. But for some people, including us, that was the appeal. Because of the angle of the mountain here, there are breathtaking views from most parts of the town. We spent our time watching the mountain vista from the porch of our accommodation and relaxing.

The view from my homestay as I arrived

We stayed in Om Shankar homestay , for just 1000 rupees or 10 euros per night. This place was run by some really nice guys and offers hot food and drinks also for reasonable prices. The rooms were large and clean, with private bathrooms.

My room at Om Shankar homestay with private bathroom

Trek from Rasol to Malana

One option for people in Rasol is to continue up the mountain to Rasol Peak, then down the other side into the neighbouring valley of Malana. This is not something we had time to do personally but from research, it seems like a challenging hike, with lots of elevation. You can view the route here on Wikiloc . It is not recommended to do this hike alone or without proper equipment and clothing. There is little to no phone signal if things go wrong and it takes you up to a max elevation of over 3000 metres. As with any remote treks like this, use common sense and exercise caution.

Mahmai Temple

One place worth a look in Rasol is the Mahmai Temple . Whilst it isn’t open to outsiders, you can go and take a look at the outside. Be respectful and don’t try to enter if you don’t have permission from the locals.

Once you’ve explored all that Rasol has to offer, it’s time to begin the descent back down towards Kasol. This took us almost as long as it did to ascend because of the steep angle of path, and the onslaught of a rain storm half way. 1.5 hours later, wet, tired and relieved, we arrived back at Chalal. After a quick coffee break in Chalal we walked the final 30 minutes back to central Kasol. After replenishing the energy reserves, it’s time for a hot shower and a rest.

Hot momos and chai from Usha Dhaba restaurant

If you feel like Kasol is too busy for you, then you can stay in one of Chalal’s numerous accommodation options. For solo and budget travellers, there is the popular Wabi Sabi Riverside Hostel . Dorms start at 400 rupees or 4 euros per night, or double rooms start at 1500-2000 rupees , roughly 15-20 euros . For mid range, private rooms, you can stay at Sunset Guesthouse or Buddha House . Both offer rooms around the 1500-2000 rupee mark, roughly 15-20 euros a night. For people wanting more luxury there is The Stream Resort . Rooms will set you back around 3000 rupees a night, close to 30 euros , but they offer very modern and luxurious rooms compared to the competition.

Kasol has accommodation for all budgets. For budget travellers, the goSTOPS Hostel Kasol is modern, clean and most of all cheap! If you are travelling as a couple on a budget, we recommend the recently opened Chander Homestay . It offers twin rooms for around 1500-2000 rupees or 15-20 euros per night. And for those looking for some Himalayan luxury, there is the Royal Castle Hotel . This is one of the nicest places to stay in Kasol, and rooms will set you back about 3000-4000 rupees , around 30-40 euros per night.

Kasol town

  • Rasol is a very remote village . Before starting the trek you should be aware that if anything happens to you, the nearest help is a few hours away. There are no roads for ambulances and police cars, and most of the trail has no phone reception or wifi.
  • Make sure your friends and family know where you are going before you start the hike, and arrange to check in with them before leaving.
  • Respect the locals . Rasol is a village where local families live and work in the mountains. Be respectful, and don’t go into any buildings or houses that you don’t have permission to. Stick to the trodden path at all times to avoid trespassing into locals farm land.
  • Hotels and homestays cannot be booked in advance online in Rasol, so do your research before arriving on where you want to stay. Once you arrive in Rasol just go into the homestay and ask for a room.
  • Adversely, hotels in Kasol get booked up very quickly in advance . Plan your trip before you arrive and book your hotel now!
  • When spending money abroad we use the WISE international debit card . You can withdraw up to 200 euros in cash per month free of charge. After that, you only pay a very low withdrawal fee.
  • Travel insurance is a must for any extreme activities abroad, especially in Asia. Although problems rarely arise, you want to be covered in the case that they do. We use SafetyWing and recommend it for anyone travelling around the world .

For a similar trek to Rasol there is Grahan village. Grahan was by far our favourite remote village we hiked to during our stay in the Parvati valley. Read our full guide to trekking to Grahan from Kasol here on the blog .

Grahan village

There are a number of other trekking routes in the Parvati valley area too. One is the Kheerganga Trek . This trek offers natural hot springs, snow capped mountains and breathtaking vistas. You can do this trek as part of a group tour, including all accomodation and meals for the 2 day duration. Check availability for the Kheerganga Trek here .

Rasol village temple

For once skip Kasol and trek to Rasol

How did we end up in Rasol? It was a rainy day in Kasol and the weather forecast predicted rains for the next two days. We stayed at Kasol the previous night and woke up to heavy rains. It seemed like it had rained all night and the snow cover had doubled on the surrounding mountains.

We were in a dilemma to choose a place as the actual plan was to trek to Grahan. Since, Grahan was a 14 kms trek from Kasol, we abruptly last-minute decision to head to Rasol .  In my trips to Parvati Valley, I had heard a lot about Rasol and wanted to check if it was worth the praise. We purchased rain cover ponchos from Kasol, thankfully the shops in the Kasol market open early. The raincoat was priced at Rs.100 and was good for a one time use as the poncho material was pretty thin.

Rasol villa he home stay

starts from Chalal and takes up to a minimum of 3-4 hours. It is a steep climb and will test your patience and endurance. We trekked to the village of Chalal and stopped at a cafe for breakfast. We had a quick coffee and sandwich by the Parvati River, soaking in nature’s peace. We started trekking at 10.30 a.m and reached the temple of Chalal. It is prohibited to touch or enter the temple. It is an important checkpoint as one needs to take the left turn from the Chalal temple.

There are sign marks painted on the rocks for Rasol and Magic Meera, which happens to be the first homestay at Rasol. We trekked for two hours through some amazing views. Mountains covered with thick pine forests and clouds circling them at the tip and around. The surrounding mountains were also surrounded by clouds. Although the rains made the trek a bit slippery, it added to the charm of nature.

Village house in rasol

Around 12.30 p.m, we reached halfway through Rasol and decided to take a break. This is the point, where we could see the village of Rasol and it was an assurance that we were on the right trail. The supposedly short break turned out to be an hour-long break as the rains got worse. The first cafe which serves only Maggi and three types of tea was such a saviour. The Maggi was soupy and yummy and was priced at Rs.80. Lemon chai was worth the try and provided much-needed warmth in the cold rainy Himalayan weather.

We started our trek back at 1.30 p.m and the trek got even more steeper. There were tall marijuana plants growing wildly. This is where the trek tests your patience. You can see the village and it seems like it’s only about 10-15 minutes away. But one still has about an hour to trek. We decided to take a short break and stopped at Magic Meera for a small halt.

This place is the first stop at Rasol and the views are mesmerising. Their cafe can remind one of the interiors of a Kashmiri house. The menu is pretty cheap compared to Kasol and other places in Parvati Valley. We ordered a cheese toast, a chai and a coffee and our bill was Rs.150. The service was quick.

Rasol village temple

Our final ascend tested our endurance as it started to rain and it was already 3.20 p.m. As we started to trek, we realised that the clouds have started to move in the same direction. That was a different experience. To trek within the clouds in the rains. After about 30 minutes, we reached the village of Rasol. There was no network coverage. The villagers smiled and were quite friendly. There were massive marijuana plants growing in the village and no one seemed to bother. That’s when I came to know about Rasol cream. The locals start to ask if you want to buy Rasol cream.

We decided to stay overnight as the weather got bad. There were thunderstorms in the evening and Rasol was covered with a thick blanket of clouds. It got really chilly in the night and we stayed at Hill Top, which is the last guesthouse in Rasol. The view no doubt was spectacular, also the food was priced decently and tasted good. There were barely 10 travellers that made it to the village of Rasol that particular day. We had a feel of being in a remote place in the lap of the Himalayas.

chalal to rasol trek distance

Located at 10,000 feet ASL, Rasol is now one of my favourite places in Parvati Valley. One should definitely visit Rasol when backpacking around Kasol as it is a place that is still unexplored and unspoiled.

  • From Bhuntar you need to travel to place called Kasol, the mini Israel of India.

  • The trek is very simple except few hikes on the way.

Chalal: Under the Blossoming Apricot Trees

Bob marley country:.

The trek starts as one crosses over a hanging and perilously jerking bridge over the Parvati river. On the other side of the bridge the view is blocked by steep stony hills. But to our relief we figured out that there was no need to climb the same. We just had to keep in walking by the side of the river following a narrow path. Chalal is basically a small village near Kasol. As expected, it has benefited from the tourism boom as a lot of resorts, camps and restaurants have cropped up in the entire stretch from Kasol to Chalal. From what I understood, this stretch also serves as the perfect venue for trance parties when the season is right. Just imagine the fragrance of that certain plant along with the music of sensuous Parvati and cool mountain breeze. As a result, it is also the Bob Marley country. He can be seen everywhere, on the flags, wall graffiti and of course on the T-Shirts.

Parvati of spring was lithe, lyrical and lusty. Trees were gradually regaining their color after the harsh winter. At this height there are as no trace of the winter remaining. It was mostly a brisk walk for around thirty minutes along the banks and through some colorful orchards.

Colours of Delirium:

Apricot blossom is to the Himalayas what Cherry Blossom is to Japan. In Masahiro Shinoda’s masterpiece Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees, most of the delirious and psychedelic imagery take place literally under the blossoming cherry trees. Those overwhelming colors combined with the raining petals at the slightest hint of wind made it an orgasmic spectacle. The apricots of Chalal also displayed the same characteristics and combined probably with the previous night’s dose, i felt a. Colorful yet giddy high inexpiable in words. The entire Himalayas get covered in pink and white of apricot blossoms during spring. I started noticing these blooming trees just after crossing Mandi. Now in the Parvati valley, they seemed to be everywhere.

As we walked, clicked and walked, we reached the village in no time. The traditional architecture of the village is slowly giving way to concrete buildings. But what immediately attracted my attention was the chirping of birds. I noticed several birds, mostly to small to capture. More exiting was the sight of a large green swarm of parakeets but they were at a reasonable distance. We entered the village and walked through the narrow alleys searching for a restaurant as the timing was perfect for lunch. But I could not take my mind off the birds.

We found a restaurant called “In fusion” and ordered tea and some staple food. I took seat near the window and kept looking for birds and after a few seconds, was delightfully rewarded. The aforementioned parakeets were actually settled in a tree on the compound of the restaurant and my position was perfect to catch them although my zoom was weak. Naturally, the first few attempts were failures but eventually the lens aligned itself to capture some non-embarrassing shots of the distant targets. Later research showed these ones to be Slaty-Headed Parakeets.

Unexpected Hospitality:

We met a French botanist couple who informed us of rhododendron blossoms up the trek, on the way to Rashol. This information led to the Rashol trek next day but for that day we kept ourselves to Chalal only. We went to the last house on the other side accompanied by local dogs and that is where we met Manu. Actually it was his house that attracted us with the singular apricot tree in the compound. It was a surreal sight. We captured several photographs and I was on my way back already. But then Hilly called me back as he had struck a conversation with the owner of the house. Many invited us in and offered sweet mint tea. He was also incessantly emptying cigarettes and filling it with you know what. Again our minds scaled certain altitudes as he talked incessantly about how the place has changed in recent years, how he plans to build a resort in the same ground and how some of his friends once got arrested in Varanasi as they were carrying the best products of their fatherlands. I have been to many aces and met many good people but nobody had offered me tea without a reason. So I hope Manu completes his resort in time and I can get back there as soon as possible.

Rest of Chalal was quaint yet colorful. Apricot was everywhere and in the interiors, traditional wooden houses were still visible. It was an easy day well spent. But I was already planning for the more hectic Rashol trek for the next day.

Hey Jitaditya,

We, a group of 4, are planning to visit Parvati valley n Manali on April 1st week. We wil b ther for 5 days. Can u suggst a brief itinerary on how to approach the places within the time we have got with us. Few places we have zeroed in are Malana, Khirganga, Rashol and Rohtang pass(if time permits us 🙂 ).

Regards Rajeev

4-5 days may not be enough to cover everything you have mentioned. What I suggest is stay put in Parvati Valley, either in Kasol or in one of the nearby villages and then do all the treks surrounding it, i.e. Malana, Kheerganga, Chalal-Rashol, etc. If time permist, you can also consider crossing the Chandrakhani Pass and reach Naggar… although I have not done it myself.

What a lovely day! I love to garden and always pay close attention to the things that are growing when we are out exploring. What a treat to get to see the apricot trees in bloom! Are they scented? Once I stumbled upon a courtyard with lemon trees blooming and I can still smell the lovely scent.

' src=

What a lovely post! I absolutely love your photos and your words.

Nice reading. I wonder what keeps you travellers from divulging the actual expenditure incurred.. It will go a long way to help people budget their visits.

I wonder what expenses are you talking about for what was just a free walk…

.. simple basics, aprox per day per person expenditure. Say if I plan for 7 day trip to Kasol how much I should have in my pocket.

Firstly I am not a travel agent or planner. I just share my experiences for free.

But still I provide enough information. You are making this comment by only reading one post on Chalal. If you’d looked, you would have found a post on every place in the region including a detailed guide to entire Parvati Valley in this very blog. Please don’t expect to be spoonfed.

Finally, I have still helped many people. But you started with a snide remark rather than just asking. So, have a good trip.

Beautiful pictures. I love the Himalayas. I’m headed to Nepal to trek the EBC in October. You’re post has put me right in the mood for my upcoming trek. Nice post – thanks for sharing!

How funny they are SO Bob Marley obsessed!! Absolutely love this blog and all of the pictures. Looked like such a pretty adventure.

' src=

Amazing photography! I didn’t know about this place. Thank you for sharing your experience and tips. I am starting to go on hikes when traveling and so far I like it a lot 🙂 Safe travels. – Mariella

' src=

The treks you are doing are so inspiring, you always manage to show us the beauty of the nature in India, something that you don’t see every day. It’s interesting to read about the Bob Marley area, however I don’t think I would like it, I hate the smell of that certain plant 😉 I can imagine how serene the cafe you stopped for a bite was, with all those beautiful parrots flying around and enjoying you with their songs.

' src=

I love how much of a global Icon Bob Marly still is. You find flags and street art of him in the least expected places. looks like you had a great time here. Stunning images.

' src=

This looks like the perfect nature escape! I love your photos, especially the one of the tall pine trees. I had never heard of the apricot blossoms before and would love to visit to see that one day!

' src=

What a perfect way to spend the day, trekking through Chala. The area is absolutely stunning, you captured it beautifully! That’s so interesting about the Bob Marley bit, I wonder how that came to be? Would love to visit during the right season when the parties are happening haha.

' src=

Excellent trekking adventure. Loved the pictures. Here I am in concrete jungle surrounded by tall buildings… wishing each moment I was in those greens!

The Chalal Diaries

Photo of Grashima

Chalal is a 30 minute casual walk from Kasol ( the most popular stop in the parvati valley & the easiest access to the world's best charas) .

The village still hasn't lost its old-mountain-village-where-people-are-so-pretty-and-simple charm. Whats interesting is the undercurrent of these villages. All just looks calm. It is in these small villages that the real trade happens (no no , not the THE real trade, that happens much deeper inside. I did not have the time to find out) Any kid here can roll a better joint than you. Most can rub the charas while just talking to you. Who knows that the sadhu aka the indian-hippie sitting next to you might be a charas lord.

There are enough options to stay in the village. Just walk up to the village and pick the one with your preferred view (or where you would like to smoke up). We liked the view from Freedom Cafe (every Freedom cafe at every backpacker town is good ... its like they are one big chain). Though the food at this one was not good, the charas definitely was !

We stayed at Alpine Resort for 2 days in Kasol. Walked to chalal in the morning of both the days. "Chilled" at the small village & came back for the good dinner at Evergreen.

Alpine Guest House

Just next to the stream, off the main road. Avoid if you hate people from Delhi, since these (we) are the ones staying there on weekends. Rs 800 * 2 Nights.

Evergreen Bhojanalaya

The place claims to be the oldest in Kasol. The food is good and so is definitely the vibe !

Experience the wilderness

Chalal is not the place you go "visit" something. Its a place you go to spend sometime with yourself. To wander amongst the wilderness. To realize that 24 hours are enough in a day. & you might supplement this all with some locally grown cannabis. So all 2 days walk randomly through any path. Find a nice cafe or a spot by the river. Eat at nice small cafes with great views and vibes. & you will be back with a bang !
