Day 1 Arrive Ushuaia

Arrive in Ushuaia, where you will be met by a representative of Aurora Expeditions and transferred with your fellow expeditioners to your assigned pre-voyage hotel. If you are already in Ushuaia, we ask you to make your way to your hotel. Check-in is from 3.00 pm. This afternoon, visit the Aurora Expeditions hospitality desk in the hotel lobby, between 3.00 pm and 7.00 pm, to collect your luggage tags, and confirm if you wish to join our Beagle Channel and Isla de Los Lobos Cruise (sea lion island) tomorrow. Our team will confirm details regarding your embarkation day, answer any questions and provide you with information on where to dine or purchase last minute items.

Expeditioners arriving after 7.00 pm will find a welcome pack waiting for them at check-in. We ask you to visit our hospitality desk tomorrow between 8.00 am – 10.00 am.

The remainder of your time is at leisure. All meals today are at your own expense.

Assigned accommodation: To be confirmed

Day 2 Embarkation Day

This morning, enjoy breakfast and check-out. Please ensure your cabin luggage is fitted with cabin tags clearly labelled with your name and cabin number. Take your cabin luggage to hotel reception, prior to, or at check-out. Your luggage will be stored and transferred directly to the port for clearance, to be placed in your cabin ahead of your arrival on board. Please keep any valuables or personal items with you throughout the day.

Your morning is at leisure to explore Ushuaia.

Those wishing to join our afternoon catamaran cruise, meet back at the hotel lobby at 12.15 pm ready to transfer to the port at 12.30 pm. Here we board our catamaran and sail the Beagle Channel, towards the city’s iconic Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse. Crossing the Bridges Archipelago we’ll slow down to watch colonies of sea lions and imperial cormorants sun themselves on the rocky outcrops, while gulls, rock cormorants, skuas, petrels, albatrosses and cauquenes are often sighted. Our cruise offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountain range, in addition to hearing tales of the people and communities of the region.

Alternatively, enjoy your day at leisure and meet at your hotel lobby at 3.00 pm, or 3.30 pm from the meeting point at the parking lot near the pier (details will be given by our ground staff at the hotel), to be transferred to the pier for embarkation.

Once onboard, you’ll have time to settle into your cabin before our important mandatory briefings. As the ship pulls away from port, we’ll gather on the deck to commence our adventure with spectacular views over Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego.

This evening get to know your fellow expeditioners and friendly expedition team and crew at a welcome dinner to celebrate the start of a thrilling adventure to Antarctica.

Day 3 Cape Horn

Located on Hornos Island in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago lies Cape Horn, near the southernmost point in South America. Until the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, ships had to sail round Cape Horn to travel between the east and west coast of South America—a hazardous endeavour due to the strong winds and current, large powerful waves and occasional icebergs. These days, Cape Horn attracts adventurous travellers—mostly from expedition cruise ships, who go ashore and hike to the landmark lighthouse known as ‘Stella Maris Chapel.’ At the top of the hill, you can enjoy panoramic views of where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans meet and feel the incredible power of nature as these two mighty oceans squeeze through the Drake Passage.

Days 4-5 Beagle Channel & Glacier Alley

As we re-enter the Beagle Channel, an important waterway that allowed ships to avoid the notoriously rough waters around Cape Horn, we follow the route that a young Charles Darwin took on board the famous HMS Beagle back in 1831, a five-year expedition that forever changed his life and which led him to develop his seminal theory of evolution.

Sailing west past Ushuaia, you travel through a dazzling stretch of the 240-kilometre (150 mile) long Beagle Channel called Glacier Alley or ‘Avenue of the Glaciers’ as it’s more elegantly known. You will marvel at this string of tidewater glaciers pushing down to the edge of the sea from the enormous Darwin Ice Field. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, most of the glaciers were named after European countries or the explorers who discovered them: Holland, Italy, Romanche, Spain, Garibaldi. Weather permitting, we’ll board our Zodiacs for a closer look at the impressive Romanche Glacier. Even if fog obscures the view, the sound of the cracking ice as it calves into the water is sure to impress. Apart from the spectacular scenery, Glacier Alley offers opportunities to spot wildlife such as penguin rookeries and South American fur seals.

Day 6 Francisco Coloane Marine Reserve

Established in 2003 as Chile’s first marine reserve, Francisco Coloane was the first known feeding ground for humpback whales along the Pacific coast of South America. The park honours Francisco Coloane, a celebrated Chilean author who wrote many stories of ocean adventures about Patagonia and Antarctica. Coloane was himself an adventurer, explorer and son of a whaler. Around the southern area of Santa Ines Island, surrounded by spectacular views including the tidewater glacier pushing down the rugged mountainous island, we spend time kayaking and Zodiac cruising, getting a close look at Magellanic penguins, imperial cormorants, flightless steamer ducks, and southern fur seals. Around Carlos III Island, a known feeding ground for the humpback whales, we hope to see the majestic creatures from the comfort of our ship, or if conditions permit, from our kayaks or Zodiacs.

Day 7 Chilean Fjord, White Narrows

As we venture north, we enter one of the many channels and fjords of Patagonian Chile. Be prepared to experience wild weather. The fjords and islands of Chilean Patagonia take the brunt of the prevailing westerlies that blow across the southern seas, and here, the wind can blow almost constantly, and rain and snow can fall all year round. We may sail through Montañas Fjord, a long fjord flanked by rugged mountains and a number of glaciers including Herman, Bernal, and Paredes.

At low tide this evening, we cross the White Narrows – a narrow channel of water approximately 80 metres wide. Find a spot on one of our many observation areas and appreciate the masterful skills of our Captain as they navigate us through this difficult channel. At the heart of Chilean Patagonia lies Bernardo O'Higgins National Park. More than 320 kilometres (200 miles) from one end to the other, the park encompasses Patagonia's Southern Ice Field, which in combination with its northern counterpart forms one of the largest expanses of glacial ice outside the Polar Regions.

Days 8-9 Puerto Natales / Torres del Paine National Park, Kirke Narrows

Puerto Natales is the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park, world-renowned for its granite towers, which give the park its name. These gigantic spires were carved by glacial ice and upon entering the park, you will see a series of lakes with intense colours, mountains covered in ice, and an array of local fauna. In Patagonia, you will feel the immensity of nature and delight in feeling completely insignificant in its presence. The jaw-dropping landscapes of turquoise waters, glaciers and towering granite horns of the Torres del Paine National Park is a humbling experience.

You will have two days to experience the wonders of Torres del Paine National Park on various hikes suited to your fitness level. You will pass several estancias (ranches) en route to the national park, and you will witness the landscape change from a steppe eco-region to deciduous forest. Along the way, pause amongst the mountains to admire views of the lakes called Amarga, Sarmiento, and Nordenskjold, and Salto Grande. You may be able to see some of the local fauna, including many species of birds including the majestic condor. Look out for foxes, huemul (Andean deer) and guanacos, which are wild camelids related to the llama. The reclusive difficult-to-spot puma has also been seen inside the national park where authorities are happy to report a healthy growing population.

We spend the night at a comfortable hotel located just outside of the national park offering superb mountain and river views. Here you will enjoy local cuisine and Chilean wine and hear about the various hiking options available to you and suited to your individual interests and fitness level. On the afternoon of your second day in Torres del Paine National Park, you will be transported back to the vessel in time for dinner, swapping stories on the drive back, of your exploration of the park.

Later this evening, enjoy the crossing of the Kirke Narrows. From the observation areas, it’s an ideal opportunity to watch the scenery unfold as you sail through this beautiful channel. Enjoy informative and entertaining presentations from our hand-selected expedition team, who will bring to life the natural environment, wildlife, culture and history of the places you’ll be experiencing.

You can choose from one of the following three itineraries to suit your fitness levels: Easy, Medium, and Difficult

Days 10-11 PIO XI Glacier, Puerto Eden

This afternoon, a maze of fjords ultimately leads us to the entrance of Pío XI, named in honour of Pope Pius XI by Father Alberto de Agostini, an Italian missionary and explorer, who in 1931 was the first person to cross the Southern Ice Field. Of the 48 glaciers in the Southern Ice Field, nearly all are retreating, except Pío XI. Scientists have not been able to explain exactly why it has advanced so far and so fast over the past 80 years. In any case, Pío XI Glacier is an anomaly in a world where nearly all glaciers are retreating and being able to see it up close is a privilege. We head to Puerto Eden on our journey northwards, navigating more challenging passages including Paso del Abismo, a very narrow and spectacular channel where you can continue to enjoy remarkable scenery.

Located on the east coast of Wellington Island, inside Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, Puerto Eden is a tiny fishing village connected by intricate canals, imposing mountains, icefields, and is considered one of Chile's most isolated inhabited places. The village is known for being the home to approximately 25 Kawésqar indigenous inhabitants – roughly 10% of the population of the village. The village is connected by beautiful timber boardwalks called ‘pasarelas’. Kawésqar are traditionally nomadic sea people and it comes as no surprise that the main economic activity is fishing - mussels being a local speciality. Known for their excellent craftsmanship for canoe-making and basketry, local handicrafts are also a speciality, and you’ll have ample opportunity to meet the locals and to purchase locally made handicrafts directly from them. You’ll enjoy exploring the picturesque boardwalks over the maze of canals, meeting the friendly locals, and soaking in the tranquil natural beauty of this isolated hamlet.

Day 12 Chilean Fjords

Leaving Puerto Eden behind, we re-enter the channels for a few days navigating our way through Patagonia’s maze of fjords towards Chiloé. Our team of experts will continue to deliver informative and entertaining presentations in the lecture theatre or, you may choose to enjoy a book from our library or stay active in the fitness centre.

Spend time on the decks to scan for whales, dolphins and seabirds, while admiring the beautiful landscapes of the maze of channels and islands around. We will be sailing along part of the 145 km / 90-mile long Moraleda Channel, which separates the mainland from the huge archipelagos of Chonos and Guaitecas. To the east we will see magnificent Andes peaks such as the Mentolat, Melimoyu and the Maca volcanoes. We will be scanning the waters for the occasional presence of pods of killer whale that predate on the numerous South American sea lion colonies located along the coast and forested islands.

Day 13 Corcovado Gulf, Tic Toc Bay

Spend the morning exploring the delightful and impressive coastline of Tic Toc Bay – either ship cruising or perhaps by Zodiac and kayak. This whole area has been recently recognised as one of the few marine parks of Chile famous not only for the seasonal presence of blue whales but also for the rich array of other cetaceans, marine mammals, and seabirds. In the Corcovado Gulf, you will enjoy spotting a good variety of seabirds including black-browed albatross, southern giant petrel, southern fulmar and long-distant migrants such as the migratory Arctic skua.

Continue to keep watch for whales in the Corcovado Gulf as we sail into Chiloé, an archipelago of lush islands, a land of myths and legends, unique folklore and culinary traditions. It’s a region blessed with natural beauty and culture, cherished by Chileans. Explore this mythical island with its colourful timber churches, sixteen of which have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Day 14 Castro, Chonchi, Chiloé National Park

Continue to Castro, the charming capital of Chiloé region.  Here you have a choice of one of the following two shore excursion options.

Option 1 - Castro and Chonchi (5 hours)

Discover the main attractions of Castro town including palafittes (houses on stilts), museums, churches and the handicraft market. You will then visit the beautiful renowned churches of the area recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. Continue to Chonchi, nicknamed the “city of three floors” for its terraces, with important sites such as the Museum of Traditions, Accordion Museum and its attractive waterfront. For lunch, savour the taste of the region’s fresh produce before returning to Castro for some free time.

Option 2 - Chiloé National Park (6.5 hours)

This excursion takes you through the pristine natural landscapes that amazed Charles Darwin during his explorations of the Huillinco and Cucao Lakes and Pacific Ocean. At Chiloé National Park visit the interpretation centre, walk along lovely “Sendero el Tepual” a pathway that winds through Chiloé’s thick and humid forest. After the walk, it’s time to relax and enjoy lunch, where you will savour the flavours of the region’s produce, before returning to Castro for some free time.

This evening, enjoy Captain’s Cocktail Party and Farewell Dinner to celebrate the end of a memorable adventure in this magical part of the world.

Sea Kayaking Vacations

One of the most exhilarating ways to experience antarctica, the arctic and beyond..

Sea kayaking holidays in the humbling wilderness of  Antarctica , the Arctic , and some of the world’s most biodiverse regions, are guaranteed to stir your soul. Paddle around brash ice and near icebergs of all shapes and sizes, absorbing the majestic scenery as it unfolds before you.

This Kayaking Program was created by kayakers for kayakers! Our program style offers the chance to develop and enhance your skills and to connect with our expert guides and your fellow Expeditioners. Participating with the small group through your voyage will minimise wasted time with briefings and equipment tryouts and maximise time on the water.

All of our  Expert Guides  are professional kayak guides, who have led trips around the world, specialise in the Polar Regions and have been chosen for their passion for the sport.

Kayaking is one of the best ways to access and intimately explore the beautiful coastlines we visit and make the most of your time in the wild and remote  destinations we visit .

You have the option to discuss with the guides what you want out of your trip and they will help with recommendations on when to paddle, when to go ashore and when it’s possible to do both in one outing.

Our  purpose-built ships  have been designed with the activities in mind, each equipped with dedicated space for our high-end equipment, including Kokatat dry suits, Seals sprayskirts, PFD’s from Astral and paddles from Werner and Aqua Bound.

Please note:

  • Kayakers must be 14 years or over. A Parent or Guardian’s signature is required for participants between 14 and 18 years old.
  • There is upper size limit in the drysuits we provide onboard. If you cannot find a suitable size within our range and you would like to bring your own, please contact our Activity Specialist to discuss in more detail.
  • Travel Insurance  is mandatory on all Aurora Expeditions voyages. An additional policy or premium may be required to ensure you have adequate coverage for including this activity.

‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do. Weather permitting, the sea kayaking activity is normally available anytime the other expeditioners go out. Rather than travelling large distances, our aim is to ensure you see as much as possible. We paddle between 5 to 15 kilometres (2 to 4 hours) per outing, often offering a combination of both kayaking and onshore landings so you won’t miss out.

Each small group of kayakers (up to 10 per guide) will have their own intimate exploration of the small hidden bays and coasts that are inaccessible to Zodiacs. Of course, we also make time for your own shore excursions and wildlife encounters.

The elements play an important role in our sea kayaking program. It is important that you have an adventurous attitude and understand that the weather can impact our kayaking time.

The level of experience required differs slightly depending on the region you are visiting. For all trips, a basic level of sea kayak experience is required, equivalent to that gained in a half day Paddle Australia “Intro Sea Skills” course. You do not need to be an expert or know how to roll; however, it is encouraged that you are comfortable in a sea kayak in the ocean, and are required to be able to swim, have a moderate level of physical fitness, and no medical conditions that prevent you from safely participating. We are happy to assist you with any preparation you may need or want prior to your voyage.

Our guides do not offer instructional classes for beginners. Therefore, the sea kayaking option is unsuitable for complete novices. If your experience is limited, we encourage you to contact us to discuss your suitability. There is often ample time to gain the required experience before you depart.

Your guide will assess your ability on the initial paddle, and if you have insufficient experience, he or she reserves the right to restrict your participation in rougher conditions.

You should be fit enough to paddle for 15 minutes without stopping at a moderate pace, for up to three hours at a time with breaks. We encourage a moderate level of fitness and recent kayaking experience as much as possible.

Polar regions

During summer the air temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula, Greenland and Spitsbergen are generally above freezing but can range from -4°C to +5°C / 24.8°F to 41°F. The water temperature in the polar regions is close to freezing and winds sweep off the glaciers, making paddling a chilling experience. Scotland, Iceland, Norwegian coasts are warmer with water temperatures of around 12°C / 53.6°F. In the Antarctic Peninsula, and Svalbard we often paddle in sheltered locations with generally calm conditions. In exposed locations places like South Georgia, we often encounter stronger wind and more challenging paddling conditions. Your guides will be constantly searching for a way to get you out safely and enjoyably.

Temperate regions

The northern waters in Scotland, Faroes, Iceland and Norway are warmer than the polar regions but water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F mean you may opt to wear your paddle jacket on a warm, sunny day or our dry suits on a cool day. Surf landings are not likely, but you must be capable of paddling in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 20 knots. With that being said, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

Tropical regions

In Costa Rica and Panama, April is the end of the dry season. The shoulder season begins in May, bringing increased humidity. Afternoon rain showers are possible in May with temperatures ranging from 26-36 °C (80- 96 °F). Winds are generally light at this time of year. The water temperature ranges from 27 -29 °C. Surf landings are not likely, but be prepared to paddle in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 15 knots. Sea kayaking faqs.

There are 20 paces available and our guide to paddler ratio is 1:10 and we provide an accompanying safety Zodiac.

Kayakers must be 14 or over. Parent or Guardian’s signature is required for participants between 14 and 18 years old.

Sea kayaking is offered in place of regular shore excursions. We aim to paddle as often as possible. Depending on the voyage, we generally aim to paddle twice per day.

We will give you a drybag for extra clothing, binoculars and anything that needs to be kept dry. You should also carry a water bottle. We recommend bringing a waterproof camera or phone, or ensuring you have a good quality waterproof case.

If the weather changes during our outing we will head back to the ship and perhaps join a shore excursion. The ship’s captain, expedition leader and kayak guide always maintain close contact to ensure a safe paddling experience. We do not attempt to paddle too far away from the ship. The emphasis is on experiencing the destination rather than travelling long distances.

The kayaks are made with a hard plastic and are easily paddled in swell and conducting shore landings, and through small patches of brash ice. We manoeuvre around the larger ice chunks and floes.

Kayaking in the poles offers a unique wildlife viewing experience. In Antarctica, we have many opportunities to encounter penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally we may even spot leopard seals or orcas. In the Arctic, we’ll paddle under nesting bird colonies, past massive glaciers and around large icebergs, however we maintain a safe distance from polar bears and walruses. Our guides carry rifles and flare guns in the Arctic to ensure your safety against polar bears.

Kayakers in wild temperate regions will have a unique wildlife experience, with possible encounters with seals and basking sharks. You will have the opportunity to view some of the largest sea bird colonies in the northern hemisphere.

The superb wildlife-viewing opportunities are endless in th e astonishingly biodiverse nature reserves we visit. Kayaks offer a unique opportunity to view marine and land mammals, coral reefs, tropical fish, sea birds and an astonishing range of rainforest birds. We will bring our snorkelling gear with us during our paddles and take advantage of any opportunities to view marine life up close.

In the unlikely event of a capsize, your experienced guide will assist by righting the kayak, stabilising it then pumping it out. Paddlers will re-enter with the guide’s help, or with a support Zodiac. With drysuits and warm clothing underneath you will be comfortable in cold water for up to half an hour. Note that the kayaks have separate compartments with bulkheads, which means they will float after a capsize.

No. Each kayaking place is for one person only. We value a program style that maintains participants through trip to maximise skill progression, group bonding and dynamics, and minimise wasted time with briefings and equipment tryouts.

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, buenos aires – introduction to argentina.

Buenos Aires is the heart and soul of Argentina, encompassing the passion of South America and emanating the beauty of a historic European city. Each of the 47 barrios that make up Buenos Aires has a distinct culture, filling the city with cosmopolitan thrills and captivating vibrancy. Your private transfer greets you at Ministro Pistarini International Airport upon your arrival and escorts you to the charming neighborhood of Recoleta. The Neoclassical façade of the Metropolitan Cathedral faces the historic Plaza de Mayo. The Spanish established the first church in the city in the 16th century.

The cathedral’s interior contains Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance altarpieces and statues, including a one of a kind 19th-century organ that has 3,500 pipes. After you settle into the comforts and beauty of your hotel, your guide escorts you to dinner. Tables line the gallery and balcony, overtaking the grounds of the former theater with more than 100 years of history. Each seat offers guests a perfect view of the stage. Ginormous velvet curtains open to reveal a couple ready to tell the story of the evolution of tango. The music begins. The aroma of Argentinian steak fills the room. The band eases you into the storyline, and the dancers’ fluid motions tell the perfect tale.

What's Included:

Buenos Aires – Footsteps of the Capital

Cafes open their doors in the morning. The aroma of freshly baked empanadas stuffed with hand-chopped beef, mozzarella, and basil drifts out of the kitchen. Porteños (Buenos Aires residents) line up to enjoy the mixture of juicy, flaky, and savory baked goods. After breakfast, your guide meets you in the lobby, ready to show the marvels of Buenos Aires on a walking tour. Consider learning more about your Argentina travel agents who strive to design a highly personalized touring experience.

Artists capture the colorful corrugated homes of La Bocca. They set out their easels along the pedestrian streets and paint the vibrant facades and quaint balconies decorated with flowerpots. Cobblestone paves the streets, and gas lamps line the walkways of the neighborhood of San Telmo. On Sundays, the antique market overtakes the streets and squares. Shops with brilliant window displays fill Calle Defensa and lead to Plaza Dorrego. Locals sip wine at tables scattered around the square. Tango dancers perform inside the cafes, utilizing the small spaces to enhance each movement as they press themselves closer together to one another.

Fjord Cruise – Edges of Tierra del Fuego

After breakfast, your private transfer meets you at the hotel and escorts you to the airport for your flight to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. The end of the Andes Mountains slopes steeply into the sea. The Beagle Channel wades along the southern border of the city. Snowcapped peaks contrast the cold cobalt water.

Your guide leads you through the protected lands of Tierra del Fuego National Park. Mountain peaks transition into deep valleys. Lenga and Guindo trees populate the antiquated forests. Ferns add a spiced zest to the air. Lush moss fills the underbrush with a bright green. You venture to Lookout Point. The trail leads through the lenga woods. In the autumn, the leaves change to an auburn color. When you reach the summit, you have an unparalleled view of Lapataia Bay. The snow-white peaks of the Patagonian mountains rise in the background. You return to Ushuaia and board your luxurious cruise ship at the harbor.

Fjord Cruise – Tip of the Continent

The morning light washes over the southernmost point of the South American continent, known as Cape Horn. A rugged cliff emerges of the water, rising to a height of 1,394 feet. Windswept grass forms pockets of green along the craggy limestone surface. A monument dedicated to sailors lost on the journey around the horn adorns the hillside, overlooking the water. Steel sheets resemble a kite flying in the Antarctic winds. At the heart of the design is an albatross in mid-flight. A Spanish poem embellishes a marble plaque. The memorial adds to the serenity of the site.

Onboard the ship, you can see the precise moment the Atlantic Ocean meets the Pacific Ocean. The tides collide, the water shifts colors, from turquoise to navy, and the natural phenomenon is magical. You reach Wulaia Bay, the site of the largest Yamana Aboriginal settlements until the 19th century. The Magellanic forest fills the landscape. On land, plaques tell the history of Captain Fitz Roy and Charles Darwin’s exploration of the land and sea. The windswept grass brushes back from the coastline. The water has a stoic atmosphere when seen from the craggy hilltops.

Fjord Cruise – A Closer Look at the Landscape

Sea lions bask in the spreading sunlight along the pebbled shores of various islands. You can see them huddled atop one another, nestling into the warmth of their fur. Dolphins burst from the water in the wake of the boat before splashing back down. The natural wildlife is as stunning as the landscape. The ship cruises through the Agostini Sound. The waterway separates Cordon Navarro mountain range from the Monte Buckland Mountains. The latter mountains have rugged peaks decorating the horizon. Ice covers a majority of the Cordon Navarro range.

You take a Zodiac raft to the shores of the sound. Boulders and pebbles spread from the water to the forest. You soon see the Aguila Glacier winding along the craggy mountains and nearly touching the lagoon. The bright blue ice shines in the sunlight. Streaks of black ash muddle the glacier’s true color and are remnants of ancient volcanic eruptions that helped shape the area. The closer you get to the glacier, the grander it becomes. You can make out the crevices and individual paths the icicles take, making the frozen deluge resemble a prairie swirling in the wind.

Fjord Cruise – Morning on the Colony

The boat docks at Magdalena Island. The sea brushes against the muddled shores. You can hear the faint call of cormorants in the distance. You follow the footpath to the white and red lighthouse that watches over the island and safeguards ships in the distance. You find the celebrated penguin colony home to approximately 200,000 Magellanic penguins. In the summer, the penguins burrow into mounds on the shoreline and nest. They waddle along the rocks and boulders as some gather to clean their feathers.

Other penguins glide through the water in search of fish. They can grow up to 30 inches tall and weigh more than 14 pounds. Adults have black backs and white stomachs, along with white bands over their eyes that resemble eyebrows. Witnessing the once endangered species thriving on the island is breathtaking. Listening to them call out to one another is unique. Watching them glide through the water as if they could fly is captivating.

Torres del Paine – To the Mountain Base

Punta Arenas is Chile’s southernmost city, shaped by both time and the elements of Patagonia. The Strait of Magellan brushes against the edges of the city and add to its colorful landscape, from the vibrant tombs of the Municipal Cemetery to the buildings vivifying the streets. The historic mansions decorating the Plaza Munoz Gamero showcase the historical importance of Punta Arenas during the wool boom. The city also functions as a port for ships sailing to and from the tumultuous Arctic waters. After breakfast, your private transfer escorts you north into the depths of the famous Torres del Paine National Park.

Mountains rise over the Patagonian steppe more than 6,500 feet. Yellow wildflowers blossom on the banks of azure lakes. Emerald forests lead to roaring waterfalls. You settle into your hotel that overlooks a luxurious prairie. You can see the outline of condors circling the sky in the distance in search of food. Rheas , an ostrich-like bird, roam along the landscape, grazing in the tall grassland. They span out their wings out wide when they run, extending over eight feet long.

Torres del Paine – Splendors of Paine

In the morning, the scent of rich coffee is refreshing. Guanaco, cousins of the alpaca, graze on the high altitude plains. They travel in packs with shimmering gold fur. The day is yours to explore the region as you desire, taking in the remarkable mountains and thundering waterfalls, stunning lakes, and tranquil grasslands all around you. At the estancia, you can mount a horse and follow your gaucho guide through the scenery.

The ranch remains a working site that offers a sample of the historical and legendary lifestyle of the hearty explorers that claimed the area. Your gaucho guide sits atop a polished leather saddle. He carries a traditional bota bag, a leather sack used to hold wine. You are not just exploring the landscape but also gaining insight into the rich culture of Patagonia. The horse runs through a gushing stream, kicking up water as it passes to the opposite bank. Windswept grass folds over the hills. In the distance, you see the snowcapped mountains over the plain.

Torres del Paine – Touching the Ice

In the morning, you set out on a journey to explore the far reaches of Grey Lake. When you reach the shoreline, you find the water a shimmering metallic color. You board a boat that takes you along the surface. The lake is more than 12 square miles. You can see lush lenga trees on the shore, along with ruby-red notro flowers blossoming in the trees. They are known locally as “firebush.” Large icebergs float on the lake, creating a quasi-obstacle course with blue peaks resembling icicles.

At the edge of the lake, you find Grey Glacier, a mass of ice 17 miles long and encompassing 100 square miles. The ice wall towers above the water more than 130 feet tall. The milky blue color glistens in the sunlight. You hear an echoing thunder and search for rain. Your guide explains that it is the sound of the ice calving. A magnificent chunk of the glacier wall breaks away from the wall and causes a marvelous splash as it hits Grey Lake. For an added adventure, you can follow a certified guide on a glacier walk, traversing the grooves, caverns, and unique formations of the glacier’s surface.

Santiago – Marvelous Seclusion to Urban Radiance

The sunlight washes over the famous peaking towers that go by the name, “Torres del Paine.” The granite pillars rise nearly 9,500 feet above sea level and glint a remarkable blue color in the passing light. After breakfast, your private transfer escorts you south to Punta Arenas. The city feels like a metropolis, buzzing with daily activity. The fresh aroma of fern trees and fresh lakes shifts to the sweeping sea breeze hinted with freshly brewed coffee wafting out of the cafes. You fly from Presidente Carlos Ibanez del Campo International Airport to Comodoro Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport in Santiago, Chile.

Skyscrapers resemble the Cerro Grande peaks of Torres del Paine National Park, creating a spectacular skyline in the heart of the financial district. The Andes Mountains roll along the edges of the city, creating a natural border between Chile and Argentina. The vibrant lifestyle of Santiaguinos (Santiago people) is no more prevalent than in the Universidad de Chile metro station. Murals decorate the walls, covering more than 12,900 square feet of space. Each section commemorates a moment in the nation’s history, from the Spanish conquest up to the late 1990s. When a train rushes through the station, the wind blows across one of the most unique art galleries in the world.

Santiago – Culture of the Capital

In the morning, locals stroll along the tree-lined walkways of Parque Bustamante. Santiaguinos ( Santiago people) enjoy the refuge from the active bustle of the big city, watching their children play in the wading pool or relaxing at the open-air tables of Café Literario on the first floor of the library in the park’s center. Your guide meets you in the hotel lobby, and you are ready to venture out into the city to immerse yourself in the fabulous culture of the neighborhoods. The presidential offices are located inside the 18th-century Neoclassical Palacio de la Moneda. A statue of President Salvador Allende decorates the square and commemorates the bravery and patriotism of the man overthrown by the violent military coup. An antique cannon adorns the courtyard facing the main walls. A citrus aroma drifts from the orange trees inside the grounds. The palace emanates the history of the city in a single building, showcasing grandeur and turbulence simultaneously.

Santiago – Departure

In the morning, the lively restaurants of the Lastarria neighborhood open their doors. Staff set tables on the sidewalks and open umbrellas to help shade patrons from the passing sun. Business professionals file into the Financial District and order a Santiago traditional drink of “coffee with legs.” In the heart of the city, Gondolas rise to the top of Cerro San Cristobal, the largest green space in the city that encompasses nearly 1,800 acres. A funicular carries people up the sections of the hillside, connecting gardens, vistas, and the National Zoo. After breakfast, your private transfer meets you at your hotel and escorts you to the airport for your flight home. As the plane takes off, the majestic Andes Mountains become smaller as you ascend, but you will never forget all the grandeur you have experienced in Patagonia.

Chile & Argentina Patagonia

argentina to chile cruise

This 8-day Chile and Argentina Patagonia adventure tour incorporates the highlights of Santiago de Chile with a self-drive adventure from Punta Arenas south to Puerto Natales, Torres del Paine National Park and beyond to El Calafate through the jaw dropping scenery of Patagonia. Whilst all your excursions and transfers in Santiago are on a private basis with a private guide, your road trip is not, allowing you to create your own adventure at your own pace and schedule for a unique Patagonia experience.

Santiago de Chile

Your adventure begins with a tour of the historical and modern sights of Santiago de Chile. Start at the main avenue, the Alameda Bernardo O’Higgins, and head to La Moneda, the Government Palace. Walk through the pedestrian streets of Huérfanos and Ahumada, and visit the famous main square of the city, the Plaza de Armas, and the Metropolitan Cathedral.

From there, continue to Santa Lucia hill, which is a great vantage point for viewing the city. Stroll around the cultural and artistic neighborhood of Bellavista, and take the aerial tramway to San Cristóbal Hill for panoramic views of the city. Finally, visit Providencia with its top restaurants, elegant shops, and modern high-rise buildings.

Punta Arenas

Fly south and explore the cultural and natural wonders of Punta Arenas, one of the most southerly cities on the continent. Before beginning your road trip, why not stay a while and see a variety of monuments and points of interest including the main square, the navy and maritime museum, the famous Roca Street, the Nao Victoria Museum, the Patagonian Institute, and of course the city’s coastline.

Torres del Paine National Park

Your main destination is Torres del Paine National Park. Located right in the south of Patagonia near the town of Puerto Natales, it delivers stunning scenery characterized by rushing rivers, ancient forests and glaciers, jagged peaks, freezing glacial lakes, waterfalls and wild windswept scrublands.

Along the way, be sure to stop at the Mylodon Cave, a large, impressive cave system where the well-preserved fossils of a giant 12,000-year-old ground sloth were discovered. Relax at the Pampa Lodge on the shores of the picturesque Serrano River, which marks the entrance to the Park. The hiking trails in Torres del Paine are without a doubt the most famous in Patagonia.

El Calafate

Cross the border into the Argentinian Pampa, stopping along the way for anything that takes your interest. Then indulge in some pampering at the Imago Hotel and Spa, which overlooks Argentino Lake, close to the glistening (and moving!) Perito Moreno Glacier.

Upon returning to Puerto Natales in Chile, spend your last night at the award-winning NOI Indigo Patagonia to take in the neighboring Ultima Esperanza waterways and glacial lakes of the region, before heading back to the airport at Punta Arenas past the unforgettable peaks of Torres del Paine for one last time.

Itinerary & Prices

All itineraries are subject to change due to seasonal weather conditions (and resultant variations in river and tributary water levels) affecting accessibility to locations. Thus navigation routes, times and excursions may need to be modified at the cruise captain’s or your guide's discretion.

Arrival & City Tour

Upon arrival in Chile, you will be picked up at the airport and taken on today’s excursion, we explore the historical and modern sights of Santiago de Chile. We start our trip at the main avenue, the Alameda Bernardo O’Higgins, and head to La Moneda, the Government Palace, where we will learn about the historical and contemporary role it plays in Chilean life.

From there we take a walk through the pedestrian streets of Huérfanos and Ahumada, where the main commercial activity of the city is concentrated. Afterward, we visit the famous main square of the city, the Plaza de Armas, around which are several important historical buildings, including the Metropolitan Cathedral. From there we continue our trip on to Santa Lucia hill, the mount upon which the Spanish founded Santiago in 1541. It is a lone steep rock, covered in vegetation and a great vantage point for viewing the city.

Moving on, we cross the Mapocho River to get to Bellavista, the cultural and artistic neighborhood of Santiago and home to many artists, actors, and young bohemian people. Bellavista lies at the foot of the San Cristóbal Hill, the highest in town, and is situated in the middle of the Metropolitan Park. We venture up the hill to explore the surrounding areas all the while enjoying beautiful panoramic views of the city. Finally, we visit Providencia with its top restaurants, elegant shops, and modern high-rise buildings. After this amazing tour, we will call it a day and return to the hotel.

Drive to Puerto Natales

Today you are picked up from your hotel and transferred to the airport for a flight to Punta Arenas.

Upon arrival, you pick up your 4 X 4 Toyota 4 Runner or similar (SUV urban 4×4) at the airport or downtown to begin your epic cross-country journey through Chile. One of the most unique and adventurous ways to see the country, travel at your own pace and schedule, stopping whenever you want when you see something that takes your fancy or piques your interest. We provide a roadmap that highlights all the best things to see, prepare all your permissions in advance for entry into Argentina and cover all airport charges for the seven days.

You’ll begin in Punta Arenas and today drive on to Puerto Natales, a distance of some 250km or 155 miles.

Take some time to explore the cultural and natural wonders of this region, known as the entrance to the Antarctic continent. On your trip, you may learn about the history of Punta Arenas and visit a variety of monuments and points of interest including the main square, the navy and maritime museum, the famous Roca Street, the Nao Victoria Museum, the Patagonian Institute, and of course the city’s coastline. Located on the edge of the Strait of Magellan this metropolis is full of quaint charm and offers visitors a different perspective of life in Chile.

A Drive Through Patagonia

Today you will head to the Torres del Paine National Park, a distance of 150km or just under a hundred miles. Torres del Paine is an official National Park of Chile and the area encompasses mountains, glaciers, lakes, and rivers in southern Chilean Patagonia. The Cordillera del Paine, a range of rugged mountain peaks that stretch out into the crisp cool air is the centerpiece of the park. It lies in a transition area between the Magellanic subpolar forests and the Patagonian Steppes and is located 112 km (70 mi) north of Puerto Natales.

Along the way, be sure to visit the Mylodon Cave, home to a giant ground sloth some 12,000 years ago and an incredibly impressive cave which since then has acted as home to Mylodon until about 5,000 years ago subsequently other animals, such as the “Dwarf Horse” Hippidion, the saber-toothed cat Smilodon and the litoptern Macrauchenia. Human remains have also been found there confirming that humans also used it as a house as well. Afterwards, continue on to the Torres del Paine National Park where you will be welcomed by the spectacular sights of gigantic granite towers and impressive mountain peaks.

Patagonia scenery mountains in distance

Pampa Lodge

Today you take a rest from driving and settle in at the Pampa lodge. Located near Rio Serrano, one of the smallest “towns” in the world – it consists of the lodge and a few small houses – we find ourselves right on the shores of the picturesque Serrano river which marks the entrance to the park. Pampa Lodge is a simple and yet cozy alternative for people wanting to enjoy amazing views of the Paine Horns and it offers unrivaled locations for those wanting to get the best views of the Torres del Paine National Park. From the lodge, you have access to the park trails and some of the most striking scenery for many a mile.

We recommend spending the evening in this beautiful and wondrous area, relaxing after a meal and enjoying the sparkling clean air and dead silence you can only find in such parts of the world.

Towards El Calafate, Argentina

Today you’ll head towards the border with Argentina and embark upon a drive from Torres del Paine to El Calafate, a distance of 287 km or 178 miles. This drive via the border crossing at Cerro Castillo should take you around four and a half hours without hurrying.

The process is quite straightforward on both sides of the border as all the paperwork you need in terms of the car is pre-prepared for you and the crossing takes only a few moments. Once you clear customs on both sides, you are free to drive into the Argentinian Pampa to your final destination of the Imago Hotel and Spa, stopping along the way for anything that takes your interest.

Lake district rock formation

Glaciers and Spas

Spend the day in and around the Imago Hotel and Spa for a bit of relaxing and pampering. The Imago Hotel and Spa offers fantastic gourmet food and all the luxurious areas you would expect in a top-of-the-range spa, in fact, the spa even offers a seven-day program of spa treatments so you won’t be short of things to choose from.

The rooms overlook the lake and are a short distance from the Perito Moreno Glacier, a glacier which is considered something of a phenomenon, in which its great mass of ice continuously advances, causing the accumulation, rupture, and detachment of gigantic blocks of ice on its 5 km wide front. The glacier is located on the Canal de Los Témpanos; where the numerous ice fragments of the glacier sail and the wall of ice reaches as high as 60 meters above the water.

Return to Puerto Natales

Today you’ll make the return drive from El Calafate to Puerto Natales. Once again you’ll cross the border, and have all of this prepared for you so this is a painless procedure. Traffic at the border crossing is at a peak during the high season from October to March, but this shouldn’t delay you on your journey at all.

We arrive at the beautiful Noi Indigo hotel located at the “end of the world”, but more specifically between the wonderful Patagonian landscapes on one side and the great sea of Puerto Natales on the other. NOI Indigo Patagonia combines the warmth and personal service of a lodge with the facilities of a modern hotel. With an award-winning design inspired by the natural beauty of Patagonia, this hotel is an ideal place for exploring Torres del Paine National Park, the Ultima Esperanza waterways, and glacial lakes in the region.

Punta Arenas & Home

Today you bid farewell to this beautiful part of the world and make the scenic return journey between Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas.

Once you arrive at the airport, make sure you leave the vehicle, and all of the documentation of your car at the appropriate desk. Airlines require 1 ½ hours arrival prior to flight departing time for checking in and baggage drop.

The setting of your stay in a 4-star hotel in Rome like the Piram Hotel is that of a XIX century palazzo that has been recently renovated. Great care was taken during the restoration of the hotel to maintain the vintage style and furnishings of the era and the recovery of many internal structures, like the ancient marble and travertine staircase, the Venetian mosaic floors, the ceilings with their original stucco and decorations and the early XX century elevator, in perfect working order and in keeping with all the safety regulations, just like the more modern second elevator.

Landslide tsunamis give cruise ships just minutes to prepare

The coastlines of alaska, greenland, chile, norway, and new zealand are especially landslide-prone.

Image for article titled Landslide tsunamis give cruise ships just minutes to prepare

Landslide-generated tsunamis don’t come with any warning signs and they’re impossible to predict. Tsunami scientists are meeting with vessel operators in Alaska this month to put together some practical guidelines for captains to use in the case they encounter one of these snap tsunamis. These recommendations will be useful for the hundreds of tour ships that navigate the large landslide-prone coastlines of Alaska, Greenland, Chile, Norway, and New Zealand. Hopefully this summit will help prepare ships , and save lives in the process. A tsunami hasn’t killed any boat passengers in Alaska in 60 years, but as ice mass continues to dwindle in the face of a warming climate, the probability of a big event increases .

Related Content

Geologist Bretwood Higman recently spoke with the Atlantic for this piece regarding a potential epidemic of landslide-triggered tsunamis. He knows of dozens of unstable slopes with millions of cubic feet of rock ready to push into a bay or fjord. Any of these tourist ships caught in the area at the wrong time would be helpless to capsize. It would be a freak accident, to be sure, but a potentially devastating and deadly event that bears thought.

“I do think that, at some point, [the situation] is going to explode,” says Higman.

In 2015 the Taan Fjord saw a 2.6 billion cubic feet of rocky land slide into the water in an instant. This sparked a 650-foot tall wave to roar out of the fjord and into Icy Bay. As the water became deeper the wave gathered speed, pushing faster and faster out of the bay and into open ocean. Thankfully no boats were in the bay at the time of the massive wave, but boats do visit semi-regularly.

The National Park Service is particularly concerned with large cruise lines entering Glacier Bay. An average of two ships traverse the bay every day during the height of tourism season, and there are as many as a dozen large slabs of land poised to slide into the water at any given time. If one of those lets go at the wrong time, thousands of people could lose their lives.

Right now the best advice for tsunami avoidance on a ship is to either run the ship aground and hope for the best, or head for deeper ocean and hope for the best. Both of those pieces of advice are based around deepwater earthquake-triggered tsunamis, which typically provide ship captains lots of advance warning. If you have mere minutes to attempt getting out of an Alaskan bay, you don’t have time to second guess yourself. That’s why the summit is so important, providing best practices for ships in the case of one of these freak accidents.

A beginner’s guide to Copa America 2024: Groups, format, location and dates

Grab your burgers, hot dogs and root beers because, for the second time in its history, Copa America is being held in the United States.

But what is this Copa America, I hear you ask?

It’s only the longest-running continental football competition, one that has played host to some of the greatest legends of the game including Lionel Messi , Pele, Diego Maradona and Neymar.

This summer, across 12 American cities and 14 stadiums, South America’s finest — including Brazil, Uruguay and a Messi-led Argentina — will compete again to take the title of ‘Champions of South America (and Others)’.

To round out the numbers, the United States, Mexico and a few other North and Central American countries have been invited to join the fun, too.

Here, The Athletic has broken down everything you need to know about the tournament, from the favourites and the format to its 108-year history filled with brilliance and drama.

How to follow  Copa America  on  The Athletic …

  • Click here to follow Copa America news  |  Copa America fixtures

Where the tournament is being played and where it’s been held previously

The last time it was held Stateside was in 2016 for Copa America ‘Centenario’, the tournament’s 100th anniversary.

Though that tournament ended badly for Messi, losing out on a first senior international trophy in a penalty shootout to Chile, it provided the iconic moment where he endeared himself to the people of Argentina by breaking down in tears on the pitch.

argentina to chile cruise

He’s since added a World Cup and a Copa America to his trophy cabinet, so don’t bet on those theatrics again.

This year, the final will be held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, home of the Miami Dolphins. It will be one of 14 stadiums used for the tournament across 12 cities: East Rutherford, Orlando, Charlotte, Atlanta, Kansas City, Arlington, Houston, Austin, Glendale, Las Vegas, Inglewood and Santa Clara.

Guide to the Copa America stadiums and host cities: Everything you need to know

Other than 2016 and this year, Copa America has only ever been held in South America.

In 1984, CONMEBOL, football’s governing body in South America, began rotating the right to host the tournament among its members, with the first rotation culminating in 2007 in Venezuela.

The second rotation began in 2011, but hosting the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics proved too much for Brazil , which was scheduled to host Copa America in 2015. Chile eventually hosted that tournament, and Brazil took the responsibility in 2019 and 2021.

Argentina has hosted more editions than any other country (nine times), most recently in 2011. Paraguay , Colombia and Venezuela are the only CONMEBOL nations that have not hosted it more than once.

Copa America format

This summer, the 16-team tournament will begin with four groups of four teams. After each team has played their group opposition once, the top two will advance.

During the group phase, teams earn three points for a win, one for a draw, and zero if they lose. If you’re anti-draw, we advise you to wait until the knockout stage, where there must be a winner. If the scores are tied after 90 minutes, extra time is used, and if the scores are still level after two 15-minute halves, the match will be decided using penalty kicks.

The knockout stage consists of three rounds: the quarter-finals, semi-final and final, one fewer round than the European Championship . In the quarter-final stage, teams that finished top of their group will play against a team that finished second. If a team progresses past that stage, they will play the semi-final. If they’re successful there, the July 14 final awaits.

If this is your first Copa America, count yourself lucky. It is not usually this way.

In 2021, there were only 10 participants, meaning two five-team groups, each playing four group games. The top four from each group made it to the knockout stage, thus eliminating only two teams in the group phase. This year is only the second time there have been 16 competing nations, with 12 being the most common since guest nations were introduced in 1993.

More on those later.

Group C: USMNT, Uruguay, Panama, Bolivia

Group D: Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, Costa Rica

Most successful, least successful

Uruguay are international football’s perennial overachievers, consistently performing well in tournaments despite a population of only around 3.5 million.

They won the tournament’s first edition on their way to collecting six of the first nine and 15 in total, a record they share with Argentina.

Like Uruguay, Argentina had most of their success before the tournament changed its name from the South American Football Championship in 1975, winning 12 of their 15 trophies before 1960. In 2021, however, they got their hands on the trophy again, inspired by Messi, who was seven when Argentina previously won the competition in 1993.

Over the past three decades, Brazil have been the dominant team in South America, collecting five of their nine trophies since ending a 40-year drought in 1989. They were back-to-back winners in 1997, 1999, 2004 and 2007, off the back of a golden generation of Brazilian talent, including Ballon d’Or winners Ronaldo (not the superstar from Portugal), Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Kaka.

Chile had a golden spell in the mid-2010s, winning back-to-back trophies in 2015 and 2016, the only two wins in their history. Paraguay and Peru have also won it a couple of times, and Bolivia and Colombia have one each, both winning as host nations.

Ecuador and Venezuela are the only CONMEBOL nations that have never won the trophy. They have come relatively close, finishing fourth in the 1993 and 2011 editions but have never reached the final.

However, Venezuela have written history in a less desirable way. They hold the dishonour of not winning a single match in 12 consecutive participations from 1975 to 2004, and are the only South American team to rank outside the top 10 of the tournament’s all-time rankings, surpassed by Mexico , a frequent guest nation.

Guest nations

Unlike UEFA , Europe’s governing body, which has 55 member nations and holds qualifiers for their 32-team equivalent, CONMEBOL is FIFA ’s smallest confederation with 10 teams. As a result, all South American teams automatically qualify for the tournament, and guest nations are usually called from around the world to make up the numbers.

For the 1993 tournament, CONMEBOL decided to add a rotating cast of guest nations to the core of 10 teams. This allowed for an added knockout round, two extra games, higher viewing figures, and… more money.

While it has yet to happen, the inclusion of guest nations opens the possibility that a team outside of South America could win the continent’s premier sports tournament. Historically, the most likely to upset the apple cart has been Mexico, who have reached the final twice. The USMNT have done pretty well themselves, reaching the semi-finals in 1995 and 2016.

The stars who will be playing

Yes, Messi will be in action. Despite completing his football bucket list in 2022 by winning the World Cup in Qatar a year after winning Copa America, the Inter Miami star has committed to playing in his seventh this year.

Not that he needs any more accolades, but when Messi steps foot in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for Argentina’s first group game on June 20, he will break the record for the leading number of appearances in the tournament. The match will be his 35th, surpassing the total set by Chile goalkeeper Sergio Livingstone. If he scores five while he’s there, he’ll also break the goalscoring record of 17, jointly-held by his compatriot Norberto Mendez and Brazil’s Zizinho. Both records have stood since 1953.

Brazil are without Neymar, so Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr will take the mantle as the team’s attacking leader. But do not fear: Alisson, Gabriel Martinelli and Bruno Guimaraes will be among those to represent the Premier League for the five-time World Cup winners.

Liverpool duo Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez should star for Colombia and Uruguay and Moises Caicedo will headline for Ecuador.

MLS players in Copa America

Messi is among several stars based in the United States who will feature at Copa America this summer, though some squads are yet to be announced at the time of writing.

Orlando City stalwart Pedro Gallese is expected to star for Peru in goal, and 2023 MLS All-Star midfielder Jose Martinez will likely perform his role in the midfield engine room for Venezuela as he does for the Philadelphia Union.

While Luis Suarez , Messi’s Miami team-mate, was not named in the squad for Uruguay’s 4-0 pre-tournament thrashing of Mexico, Cristian Olivera (LAFC) and Orlando City pair Cesar Araujo and Facundo Torres are expected to fly the MLS flag for Uruguay at the tournament.

MLS plans during Copa America

With all those MLS players being called up for international duty this summer, surely MLS Commissioner Don Garber will pause league play, right?

“We can’t afford (to shut the league down for Copa America),” Garber stated in his league address on the eve of the 2023 MLS Cup final. “If we have to shut the league down (and) lose games, it impacts our players, it impacts our partners, it impacts our fans, it impacts everything that MLS has to deliver for all of our stakeholders. That being said, we’ve got to manage through that process, be clever and creative, and figure out how to reconfigure the schedule with all these different events to make it work.”

Nothing says serving your fans like forcing teams to field sides without their best players. For example, Miami will play the Columbus Crew, the MLS Cup holders, on July 20, one day before Copa America kicks off. For that game, Miami will be without Messi.

What Maradona and Pele didn’t win

Almost every South American superstar has won Copa America, except for two of the greatest ever: Maradona and Pele.

Maradona appeared in three Copa Americas (1979, 1987 and 1989) but never got over the line. His best performance came in 1987 on home soil, where he scored three goals in four matches, including a brace in the second group game against Ecuador. That was only enough to get to the semi-final stage, losing 1-0 against eventual winners Uruguay.

argentina to chile cruise

Pele gave himself even less chance, appearing in just one Copa America in 1958. As a 19-year-old, he finished as top scorer with eight goals and won the best player award, but Brazil finished second to Argentina in a seven-team round-robin. Imagine if he’d have played as many as Messi.

Let’s not go there.

How to watch

Fox Sports holds the English-language rights in the United States and will broadcast every game from the tournament on its Fox, FS1 and FS2 channels.

The USMNT’s opening group games against Bolivia and Panama will be broadcast on Fox at 6pm ET, while their third group fixture against Uruguay will be on FS1. Every Brazil and Argentina game is on FS1, while Mexico’s group ties will be split between Fox and FS1.

The UK broadcaster is yet to be confirmed, but BBC held the rights in 2021.

The favourites

Argentina are on an international tournament winning streak and they are favourites to win again this summer in the United States. Despite being without Neymar, Brazil are Argentina’s most obvious competitor, and there will be little surprise if they add to their nine Copa America trophies this year.

Uruguay are slightly behind the elite duo but have the talent to go all the way. Outside of those three, Colombia are the pick of the dark horses. The United States have quality and could reach the semi-finals if a favourable knockout route presents itself, but the final might be a game too far for Gregg Berhalter’s young squad.
