Paro (2,270m) is the first city for most guests to reach Bhutan. It is known for Tiger's Nest which makes Paro a must-visit destination in Bhutan . For nature and culture lovers, Paro is a picturesque place that combines spirituality, natural beauty, and cultural heritage. You may have the chance to attend the colorful annual Paro Tshechu Festival if you visit Paro in early to mid-March . The festival falls on the 10th day of the second lunar month of the Bhutanese calendar. In some years, the festival might start slightly earlier, around March 10th or 15th. The festival celebrates the birthday of Guru Rinpoche , a revered figure in Bhutanese Buddhism.

You can take a flight to Bagdogra, India, and then hire a cab to Phuentsholing. Other border crossing points from India to Bhutan can be found at Gelephu border (Bongaigaon) and Samdrup Jongkhar border (Darangamela), but they are much further away than the Phuentsholing border (Jaigaon).

Constructed in the 16th century by the local ruler Chogay Dragpa, legend has it that Guru Rinpoche , the revered Buddhist master, first landed at Drakarpo, then Dzongdrakha, before reaching the famous Paro Taktshang ( Tiger's Nest ). With its strategic location providing a splendid view of the Paro Bondey valley, Dzongdrakha Monastery is often regarded as the second Tiger's Nest. Spanning between Haa (2,220m) and Paro Valley, it is the highest point along Bhutan's roads. From this elevated position, breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes await you. Clear weather may even give you a glimpse of Jomolhari, one of Bhutan's tallest peak , soaring proudly at 7,326 meters.

Descending from the mountain pass, follow the winding road for 26 kilometers, you will reach Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo . According to legend, in the 7th century, King Songtsen Gampo of Tibet achieved the incredible feat of constructing 108 temples within a single day. Among these temples were the White Temple and the Black Temple . These sacred structures were erected to safeguard the people residing in Haa Valley. The tale tells that during the temple's construction, King Songtsen Gampo released two doves , one black and one white, from his consciousness. These doves were believed to guide him to the most promising locations for building the temples.

Your first stop will be a visit to Lhakhang Karpo , also known as the White Temple. It is nestled at the base of three magnificent peaks located to the south of Haa Valley, where you can observe white pigeons finding refuge. Next, continue your trip to Lhakhang Nagpo , the Black Temple, which can be reached by a 10-minute walk from north of the White Temple. This location was selected by black pigeons . Lhakhang Nagpo, built on a lake, derives its name from the color black and is surrounded by serene greenery and dense forests.

Lastly, hike to Wangchuk Lo Dzong , an administrative center constructed after the destruction of the old Danzong in 1915. Currently serving as the headquarters for IMTRAT, it also houses a military school, a military hospital, and a school.

After a memorable Haa hike experience , head back to Paro for welcome dinner with Bhutan Culture Dance Show .

This morning, you will get ready to start the exciting hiking tour to Tiger's Nest, the landmark of Bhutan and the most famous holy monastery in the country. It is about a 12km drive (over 0.5 hour) from Paro city to the start point of the Tiger's Nest hike route.

Usually, it may takes about 2.5 hours to reach Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang) on foot. The entire Tiger's Nest Hike takes around 5 to 6 hours, with about 2.6km of uphill trekking and about 2.6km of downhill walking. You have the option to rent a horse at the designated place if you prefer. Riding a horse (self-payment required), it takes about 1.5 hours to reach the halfway point on the mountainside. From there, you need to say goodbye to your horse and hike for another 1.5 hours to reach the Tiger's Nest Monastery. At the halfway point , there is a Taktsang Cafeteria where you can have a buffet lunch and enjoy coffee and tea. What is more it is the first viewpoint where you can look up at Tiger's Nest Monastery , the incredible religious site of Buddhists. As the viewing position ascends, the outline of Tiger's Nest Monastery becomes increasingly clear. On the journey ahead, you can enjoy the hike in Bhutan’s forest and will see more and more prayer flags and prayer wheels, left behind by the Bhutanese people who come here to worship. You will also have a panoramic view of the beautiful Paro Valley below. If you visit in April, you will have the opportunity to see the high-altitude rhododendrons blooming , creating a stunning display of red clouds amidst the mountains.

Then, you will stand right opposite the Taktsang Goemba ( Tiger's Nest Monastery ) and admire Bhutan's most iconic cultural landmark, which is renown as one of the world's top ten super monasteries. The Tiger's Nest (3,120m) is sited on the side of a cliff at a height of 900m above the Paro Valley (2,270m). According to legend, the Indian sage Guru Padmasambhava ( Guru Rimpoche , the founder of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and the builder of the first monastery in Tibet - Samye Monastery) arrived at the location of Tiger's Nest Monastery in the 8th century. It is said that he rode a tigress and subdued demons before spending 3 months meditating in the mountain caves here. This eventually led to the formation of the present-day Tiger's Nest Monastery. Throughout history, this place has been considered a sacred site by Buddhist luminaries . However, it wasn't until 1692 that the current structure of Tiger's Nest Monastery took shape. In 1998, a devastating fire caused significant damage, but it was reconstructed in 2005, closely resembling the original architectural design. If you are interested you can hike into the monastery to explore more (no photo inside). Today, Tiger's Nest Monastery, one of the most visited tourist attractions in Bhutan , is revered as the holiest pilgrimage site for Bhutanese people to visit at least once in a lifetime.

After the Tiger's Nest hike , it is time to visit Kyichu Lhakhang , also known as the Temple of the Thousand-armed and Thousand-eyed Avalokiteshvara. It is one of the 108 Buddhist temples built by King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century (around 659 AD), and it is believed to have been constructed to subdue the left leg of the Tibetan witch. Kyichu Lhakhang is also one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist temples in Bhutan and serves as a venue for important celebrations of the Bhutanese royal family. In the main hall of Kyichu Lhakhang, you can see the revered statue of an eight-year-old Shakyamuni Buddha , believed to have been created during the same period as the Jowo statue in the Ramoche Temple in Lhasa, Tibet. It is considered a national treasure of the Kingdom of Bhutan . Apart from housing many precious historical artifacts and Buddhist scriptures, the temple also enshrines the relic stupa of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910-1991), a renowned master of the Nyingma tradition. Additionally, there is a piece of iron chain forged by Tangtong Gyalpo , who was the former head of the four major Tibetan Buddhist schools and is known as the Iron Bridge Living Buddha and the father of Tibetan opera.

Kind Reminds: 1. The best time to visit Tiger's Nest is from March to May and from October to December. After noon, the monastery will be hidden in the shadow of the cliffs, so it's recommended to depart early if you want to capture good photos. 2. Tiger's Nest offers horse riding services to go uphill, but the horse ride is only available up to a designated point. From there, you still need to hike to reach the monastery. When descending, you must walk the entire way as horse riding services are not provided. 3. Mobile phones and backpacks are not allowed inside Tiger's Nest Monastery. Personal belongings can be stored at the entrance. If you wish to light butter lamps, make sure to have some cash ready before storing your belongings. 4. Along the way, you may encounter stray dogs. Please be mindful, give them space, and avoid disturbing them.

Today, we will head to Thimphu , the capital city of Bhutan , which is approximately 50km away and takes about 1.5 hours to reach. On the way, we will make a stop at Tamchog Lhakhang for a visit. Once in Thimphu (altitude 2,340m), you will have a full day of sightseeing. You can explore its rich cultural heritage such as the Buddha Dordenma Statue, National Memorial Chorten, and Tashichho Dzong. Nature lovers will love to visit the Motithang Takin Preserve to see Bhutan's national animal. Additionally, you have the opportunity to learn more about Bhutanese culture by having dinner at the Folk Heritage Museum (available for groups of over 5 people).

From Paro to Thimphu, you won't want to miss visiting the famous Tamchog Lhakhang (Tachog Lhakhang), situated by the Paro river. There, you will have the opportunity to walk across a unique iron chain bridge adorned with colorful fluttering prayer flags. Both the Lhakhang and the iron bridge were constructed by the revered saint Thangthong Gyalpo (1385 - 1464), who was renowned as the Iron Bridge Maker . Take delight in exploring his historic architectural creations that have stood the test of time. Then, you will visit the iconic landmark of Thimphu city - the Buddha Dordenma Statue ( Buddha Point ), which is the largest sitting Shakyamuni statue in the world . Completed in 2015, the statue embodies an ancient prophecy of radiating happiness and peace throughout the world. In addition to admiring its impressive height of 51.5 meters, constructed of bronze and gilded in gold, you will also be able to see 125,000 smaller Buddha statues placed within it. Moreover, from this vantage point, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Thimphu Valley .

As the largest city in Bhutan , Thimphu lacks traffic lights and a railway system. When you enter the city, you can visit the National Memorial Chorten and experience it as the locals do. It is customary to follow the footsteps of the Bhutanese people and perform a clockwise kora (circumambulation) around the Chorten while offering prayers. This will provide you with numerous opportunities to engage with the locals and learn about their daily lives, as well as their philosophy on happiness.

The National Memorial Chorten is the most visited landmark in Thimphu . Constructed in 1974 in memory of the Third King , His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuk (known as the Father of Modern Bhutan), by his mother, it reflects the late king's vision of promoting world peace and prosperity. The Chorten follows a Tibetan-style architecture and is adorned with remarkable paintings and intricate sculptures. You can observe the traditional stupa design, featuring a pyramidal pillar topped with a crescent moon and sun. There, you can observe the unique creature that is said to have been created by the legendary Drukpa Kunley (Divine Madman). Sure, you should not miss the visit to Tashichho Dzong (Thimphu Dzong), which has served as the seat of the government since 1952. This magnificent fortress-like structure is located on the western bank of the Wang Chu River . It seamlessly integrates with the entire valley and stands as the ultimate center of power in Bhutan. It houses the offices of the current reigning monarch, the Fifth King (Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck), as well as the ministries of internal affairs and finance. Additionally, it serves as the residence of the spiritual leader of Bhutan, the Je Khenpo , and hosts the central religious institutions of the country. During the summer season, the Je Khenpo resides in the Thimphu Dzong , while in the winter season, they relocate to Punakha Dzong. Walking around the Dzong, you will discover that it is an impressively large structure surrounded by well-kept lawns and beautiful gardens. Tashichho Dzong has two main entrances. One entrance leads to the administrative section in the south, while the other, situated in the north, grants access to the monastic quarter where the Thimphu Tshechu festival and masked dances are performed.

Note: The tourist opening hours of Thimphu Dzong are from 5 PM to 6:30 on weekdays and from 10 AM to 4 PM on weekends. It is required to have a tour guide accompany you for a visit to the Dzongs. Before entering for a visit, security checks are conducted.

Finally, it's time for dinner. If there is a group of over 5 people, you can enjoy a traditional meal at the Folk Heritage Museum . The museum was established in 2001 through the initiative of Her Majesty Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, the Queen Mother of Bhutan (Mother of the 5th King). It is housed in a three-storied, 19th-century traditional house, offering visitors a glimpse into the traditional Bhutanese lifestyle . The museum showcases artifacts from rural households, including a collection of typical household objects, tools, and equipment. After dinner, you will spend the night in Thimphu and have a restful sleep.

New Delhi Sweats Through Its Hottest Recorded Day

For weeks now, temperatures in several states in northern India have been well over 110, and hospitals have been reporting a rise in heatstroke.

New Delhi recorded its highest temperature ever measured on Wednesday — 126 degrees Fahrenheit, or 52.3 degrees Celsius — leaving residents of the Indian capital sweltering in a heat wave that has kept temperatures in several Indian states well above 110 degrees for weeks.

In New Delhi, where walking out of the house felt like walking into an oven, officials feared that the electricity grid was being overwhelmed and that the city’s water supply might need rationing.

The past 12 months have been the planet’s hottest ever recorded, and cities like Miami are experiencing extreme heat even before the arrival of summer. Scientists said this week that the average person on Earth had experienced 26 more days of abnormally high temperatures in the past year than would have been the case without human-induced climate change.

Extreme heat can cause serious health issues and can be fatal.

Although late-afternoon dust storms and light drizzle in New Delhi had brought hope of some reprieve on Wednesday, the weather station at Mungeshpur, northwest of the capital, reported a recording of 126 degrees around 2:30 p.m. Dr. Kuldeep Srivastava, a scientist at the regional meteorological center in Delhi, said it was the highest temperature ever recorded by the automatic weather monitoring system, which was installed in 2010.

In a statement later on Wednesday evening, India’s meteorological department said the Mungeshpur station was “an outlier compared to other stations.” It said it was assessing whether that station’s recording of a higher temperature than other stations around Delhi was due to an error or a local mitigating factor.

The previous record for the highest temperature, around 48 degrees Celsius — about 118.5 Fahrenheit — was repeatedly crossed in recent days. Three of New Delhi’s weather stations reported temperatures of 49.8 degree Celsius — 121.8 degrees Fahrenheit — or higher on Tuesday, setting a new record even before the 52.3 degree reading on Wednesday afternoon.

For weeks now, temperatures in several states in India’s north have reached well over 110 degrees, and hospitals have been reporting an uptick in cases of heatstroke. In the Himalayan states, hundreds of forest fires have been reported.

Deadly fires in crowded buildings are regular occurrences in India, with many of them caused by short circuits. The rising temperatures have increased concerns about the risks.

Atul Garg, Delhi’s fire chief, said daily fire-related calls have crossed 200, the highest in the past decade.

“Normally during this period in the last eight to 10 years we would receive 160 calls per day,” Mr. Garg said. “We are stretched in terms of manpower.”

The heat wave has coincided with campaigning for India’s general election, with the last phase of voting set to take place on June 1. Candidates, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and opposition leaders, have continued holding large public rallies, despite the temperatures.

Nitin Gadkari, a cabinet minister who is running for re-election, fainted from the heat while addressing a rally, and on Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi, the opposition leader, took a break during a speech to pour water from a bottle onto his head.

“It’s quite hot, no?” he said.

To help conserve water amid the extreme heat, Atishi Marlena, Delhi’s water minister, announced the deployment of 200 teams to crack down on waste and misuse. Fines will be imposed for activities such as washing cars with hoses, “overflow of water tanks” and “use of domestic water for construction or commercial” purposes, she said.

Delhi’s lieutenant governor, V.K. Saxena, ordered measures to protect construction workers during the midday heat, and for water to be provided at bus stands.

The state broadcaster reported that Mr. Saxena, who was appointed by Mr. Modi, had also called for construction workers to get “paid leave” between noon and 3 p.m. But it did not say how that would be implemented, particularly at a moment when the capital region’s administration is paralyzed by infighting between its lieutenant governor and the elected chief minister.

Just how much the heat has affected daily life in the Indian capital was captured in the adjournment order of a consumer dispute court last week when the most intense period of the heat wave began.

The presiding official, Suresh Kumar Gupta, complained that the room had no air-conditioning, and the water supply in the bathrooms was also affected.

“There is too much heat in the courtroom, which led to sweating, as such it is difficult to hear arguments,” he said in the order. “In these circumstances, arguments cannot be heard, so case is adjourned.”

Jitender Singh, 42, an auto rickshaw driver in the eastern part of the city, said that business was down by about a third because people were avoiding leaving their homes. He said he and his colleagues had frequently fallen sick.

“But we must come on the road to support our families,” he added.

India's Modi prepares for record 3rd term as nations congratulate his government on election victory

NEW DELHI — The United States, Russia, China, and other nations sent their congratulations Wednesday as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government began preparations for his swearing-in for a record third term following the world's largest democratic election.

Modi’s Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party met with allies who unanimously elected Modi as the National Democratic Alliance leader. Modi is likely to be sworn in as the prime minister on Saturday, local media said.

Official results from the Election Commission showed the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance or NDA won 294 of the 543 seats, more than the 272 needed for a majority but far fewer than had been expected. For the first time since the BJP swept to power in 2014, it did not secure a majority on its own, winning 240 seats, far fewer than the record 303 it won in the 2019 election.

Modi met on Wednesday with Indian President Droupadi Murmu and tendered his customary resignation along with that of his Cabinet ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.

Congratulatory messages to Modi from leaders of regional countries including Nepal and Bhutan were the first to arrive, while the White House commended India for its “vibrant democratic process.”

Matthew Miller, the U.S. State Department spokesperson, said the U.S. looks forward to furthering “our partnership with the Indian government to promote prosperity and innovation, address the climate crisis, and ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific region.”

U.S. President Joe Biden spoke with Modi to congratulate him and the National Democratic Alliance on their historic victory in India’s general election, Biden also commended the people of India for participating in the largest democratic exercise in human history.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone with Modi on Wednesday and “warmly congratulated” him. Putin and Modi “expressed satisfaction with the current level of the specially privileged strategic partnership between Russia and India, which will continue to expand in all directions," said a readout by the Kremlin.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Wednesday extended congratulations to the BJP.

"A sound and stable India-China relationship is in the interest of both countries and conducive to the peace and development of this region and beyond,” she said, adding that China is ready to work with India in the fundamental interest of the two countries.

Tensions remain high between India and China, with tens of thousands of soldiers massed on their disputed border since 2020. A clash left 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers dead.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he looked forward to seeing India attend a peace summit to be hosted by Switzerland.

"Everyone in the world recognizes the significance and weight of India’s role in global affairs. It is critical that we all work together to ensure a just peace for all nations,” he said.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te said he looked forward to expanding collaboration in trade, technology and other sectors to contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.

In the election, the opposition Congress party won 99 seats, improving its tally from 52 in the 2019 polls. Among its key allies, the Samajwadi Party won 37 seats in northern Uttar Pradesh state in a major upset for the BJP, the All India Trinamool Congress took 29 seats in West Bengal state, and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won 22 seats in southern Tamil Nadu state.

Combined, the opposition INDIA coalition won a total of 232 seats.

The BJP may now be “heavily dependent on the goodwill of its allies, which makes them critical players who we can expect will extract their pound of flesh, both in terms of policymaking as well as government formation,” said Milan Vaishnav, director of the South Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

“At the very least, the result pricks the bubble of Prime Minister Modi’s authority. He made this election about himself,” Pratap Bhanu Mehta, a political commentator, said in The Indian Express newspaper. “Today, he is just another politician, cut to size by the people.”

More than 640 million votes were cast in the marathon election held over six weeks, the world’s largest democratic exercise.

How To Reach Bhutan?

Earlier, it was difficult to reach Bhutan as the frozen paths in the North and dense jungles in the South. After 1960, Bhutan was made well-connected to various countries by different modes of transport like air, train and road. Here is a detailed list of numerous modes of reaching Bhutan from which you can choose according to your budget and time.

The one and only airport to reach Bhutan is located in Paro namely, Paro International Airport. Apart from this, there is a domestic airport situated in the south-central part of Bhutan called Gelephu Airport. The only airline which operates regular flights from selected places of the world to Bhutan is the National Air Carrier of Bhutan. One of the other ways to reach Bhutan is via Bagdodra Airport. This airport receives many flights from major cities of India as it is not far away from the Bhutanese border and takes only a four-hour drive to reach there. While travelling through plane, you can witness the mesmerizing scene of the Paro Valley and high peak mountains.

There are only three main land borders which tourists have to cross to reach Bhutan, that is, Gelephu, Phuentsholing and Samdrup Jongkhar.

Gelephu, situated in the south-central part of Bhutan, is around 250 kms away from Thimpu, the capital city. The journey includes passage via the alpine zone and sub-tropical areas of Bhutan which makes the journey more interesting. The passage crosses three districts and takes ten hours to cover the journey.

Located in the south-west side of Bhutan, Phuentsholing is approximately 170 kms away from the Bagdodra Airport in West Bengal (India). It takes half of the time in comparison with the Gelephu journey.

Samdrup Jongkhar is positioned in the south-east part of Bhutan which is 150 kms away from the capital city of Assam, Guwahati. This three-hour route takes travelers through Mongar, Bumthang, Trongsa and many more places.

It is not at all shocking to know that travelers from India and can also opt for bus services from Kolkata. One can get a direct bus from the Esplanade Station in Kolkata to Phuentsholing. The 18-hour journey is usually comfortable as the bus services are provided by the Royal Bhutanese Government. Besides this, Siliguri has regular bus service to Jaigaon which takes less than four hours to reach there.

Paro International Airport is the only airport in this country that to several countries of the world like India, Europe, Nepal, and Thailand. If vacationers want to take a road route to Bhutan, buses ply from Bhutan to Kolkata, Siliguri, and Phuentsholing, and vice versa. To reach Bhutan by car, tourists can drive through three land border crossings located along the southern border, only from India.

Unfortunately, there is no direct train route to Bhutan. As a result, travelers ultimately have to book a cab or bus from the nearby railway stations. Some of the best options in India are Hasimara, New Jalpaiguri Station and New Alipurduar.

Located in West Bengal, Hasimara is only 17 kms away from Phuentsholing. Travelers can catch Indian railways to reach here. Apart from this, New Jalpaiguri Station in Siliguri is one of the most convenient options from where you can hire direct taxis or buses to reach Jaigaon. Whereas, New Alipurduar is 60 kms away from Jaigaon.
