Coffee Mia Brew Bar & Cafe is a family-owned and operated business located at 250 Reservation Rd Suite E, Marina, CA 93933. Coffee Mia has been serving Marina and the Monterey Peninsula since 2008. Our mission statement is "It's all about the Love".  Our love of God, food, coffee, community and customers.

Coffee Mia donates to local schools, churches, sports, homeless, police, fire,  military, and senior citizens. During the covid 19 lockdown, Coffee Mia donated over 1,500  spaghetti and meatball dinners to those in need.

We are thankful to our loyal customers who make it all possible. We could not do it without you. We have made many friends of customers who come in from all over the world to many of the events held here on the Peninsula. We look forward to seeing you and your families year after year. It is a true pleasure to serve you!

We serve a variety of Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting Company fair-trade coffees, Harney and Sons teas, fresh fruit smoothies, homemade soups, salads, paninis, sandwiches, and burritos, as well as daily specials. We feature a variety of delicious baked goods including our mouth-watering homemade cannoli.

Due to the continuing fluctuation of goods and supplies, Coffee Mia does not publish prices at this time.  However, you can be assured that we take pride in giving our customers the highest quality product with an emphasis on value.

Wonderful coffee, loved the avocado toast. Great place to chill with your friends. Outdoor seating and a taco truck in the parking lot when the weather gets warmer.

What a cool building! I really enjoyed the space used. There seemed to be plenty of seating inside and outside and certainly a lot to look at and out of. I enjoyed my sandwich, which came with chips. Service wasn't super fast but I think they were shorthanded. Next time I'm in town, I'll definitely stop by!

Best coffee shop in town. Great coffee and loose leaf tea. The pastries, sandwiches and soup are all homemade and delicious.

The food and drinks are absolutely amazing, dont get me wrong. The song choice is also fire. It's just so unbearably cold in here. Hard to want to come and spend money to be productive in such a cold environment. Isn't part of the esthetic of a coffee shop suppose to be nice and toasty. :((((

Warm lovely atmosphere and great service. The avocado toast with pickled onions was delicious. Don't forget those special little rolls they make they are yum yum good! The everything bagel was also perfect. Delicious hot macchiato topped it all off.

Welcome to the Silos! Perfect name for a family friendly bistro at one entrance to the University of Idaho! The baked goods and selection of sandwiches gave good variety to college kids and those who aren't as adventurous! Have you heard of a Silo Roll? My gosh! They should be illegal! Buttery caramelly dough rolls (5 for $5) which scream "Comfort food!" to my senses! I ordered the lavender matcha latte with oat milk. Sleek 20 Oz size with the perfect amount of syrup. Love this new coffee-study area. It's perfect for a little noshing or a larger bite!

This was my first time in to The Silos & Social. I was greeted as soon as I walked in, and was thanked for coming in as I left. The pesto chicken sandwich was messy, but it was fresh and hot and it tasted great. I'd order it again. The bag of Vickie's chips on the side was a nice touch. The venue does have some issues that need to be addressed. The only open table hadn't been wiped down after the previous customer and I had to do it myself. I didn't see anyone clean tables at all while I was there. There were only a few napkins at the "condiment" station and no one restocked them when they refilled the self-serve water. The issues are easy to resolve, and I anticipate that things will improve. I plan to come back again.

This is a delightful shop! Simple foods like chicken, salads, soups and pastries. Got lunch there today for take out. Will definitely be back to hang out in the dining area. It was quiet despite several people being there. The employees were absolutely lovely. We didn't get the coffee but will have to try it soon. So far this is going to be a go to recommendation for a lunch spot.

In our 21st year now, Bucer’s Coffeehouse & Pub has been roasting our own fine coffee, serving great espresso, baking beautiful pastries, grilling hearty sandwiches, pouring amazing local draught beers, and fine wines, and much more…

We do it all for a vibrant and diverse community that appreciates great food and drink, enjoys live music, and loves to run into their friends here in our pub.

THE ROASTERY

Bucer’s was built on the foundation of carefully selected 100% Arabica coffee, roasted fresh, in-house, every week. Our favorites tend to come from the isthmus area of Latin America (especially Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica), the horn of Africa (especially Ethiopia), Sumatra, and Papua New Guinea – but we’re always running into stunning new coffees that we work into our regular rotation.

Our pride and joy – and the focus of our roasting – is our signature Bucer’s Blend. Bucer’s Blend combines beans from Latin America, East Africa, and Indonesia to create a nutty, chocolatey, earthy cup. Balancing these classic espresso notes with a light sweetness and elegant smoothness, it works beautifully as espresso but just as well in a French Press, pour-over, Aeropress, and even as a drip coffee.

Our Roastmaster roasts our coffee a few times weekly with a Turkish-built Toper 10-kilo roaster. The artisan craft originated with Bucer’s founding family and current owner, the Greenfields. Roasting our own guarantees the freshest cup in the region!

The Bucer’s kitchen staff gets started early in the morning, baking our own made-from-scratch muffins, cinnamon rolls, scones, and coffee cake. Our rich quiches come flourless or baked in a fine pastry crust, with options for vegetarians or meat-lovers. Our hearty Pub breakfast pastries and breakfast burritos are filled with eggs, sausage, and cheese. Our panini grilled sandwiches are piled with meats, cheeses, and veggies onto our fresh-baked focaccia bread. Plus a rotating variety of daily soups, pasta salad, brown rice salad (GF), or Asian kale salad (GF), and any number of inspired surprises.

Our homemade dessert selection includes our popular six-layer Guinness Chocolate Cake, Crumb Top Apple Pie, New York Cheesecake, Key Lime Pie, and our rich chocolate truffles and macaroons. Don’t forget to try our signature Affogato with Ferdinand’s local WSU creamery ice-cream.

There are many reasons to keep going to one coffee shop and become a loyal customer.

First, here are some facts: coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world, after oil; coffee provides jobs for 25 million farmers, mostly in equatorial countries a.k.a. the ‘coffee belt’; over 500 billion cups are consumed every year; it’s a $100 billion dollar industry; according to Statista, in 2016/17, consumers around the globe drank about 157.38 million 60kg bags of coffee.

People want more and more coffee and this market situation is lead by 10 reasons behind people’s love for coffee shops. We dug deeper and found out several reasons why people love cafes:

1.You’re Getting Coffee

Whether it’s how you start your morning or how you keep on pushing into the afternoon, coffee is one of the most popular daily beverages. Specialty coffee sales are increasing by 20% per year and account for nearly 8% of the 18 billion dollar U.S. coffee market. Coffee statistics show that among coffee drinkers the average consumption in the US is 3.1 cups of coffee per day. Thanks to developing coffee markets- like mainland China, where the average person consumes just three cups of coffee per year, according to Euromotion- there’s still a lot of room for the bean business here to grow and get new patrons for their comfy coffee shops.

2.You’re Getting a Caffeine Fix

You were doing so well this morning until you blacked out. The next thing you know, you’re standing in line and it’s your turn to order. A cup of filter coffee typically contains around 90 mg while an espresso contains 80 mg of caffeine.

After you drink coffee, the caffeine is absorbed into your bloodstream. From there, it travels to your brain. Many controlled studies in humans show that coffee improves various aspects of brain function — including memory, mood, vigilance, energy levels, reaction times and general mental function. So by drinking coffee people not just boost their energy level, but also their mood, concentration and memory.

3.You’re Getting Breakfast

We all live in a rush and getting breakfast in a coffee shop seems more like reality nowadays, rather than a caprice. So on the way to work you always have warm breakfast and hot cup of coffee. There are so many breakfast options available nowadays from McDonalds to upscale cafes. For example, this year Nestlé China launched its long-term healthy a series of campaigns: “Healthy Breakfast”, “Pleasure Break” and “More Exercise”. In collaboration with Chinese government and Meituan-Dianping, the leading third-party delivery and takeout platform, Nestle aims to promote a healthy breakfast.

As more and more young professionals in China join work forces, there is a big demand for take-away breakfast, that is usually ordered through delivery platforms. Focusing on growing group of customers and giving them exactly what they need from their first minutes of the day might be a great idea. Just to mention only few of coffee brands that Nestle owns: Blue Bottle, Nescafe, Nespresso, Ristretto and Dolce Gusto. In addition, Nestle recently bought Starbucks’ packaged coffee business.

4.You’re Stalking Your Barista Crush

Like in any other business, your frontline employees are your business’s prime connection to the customer. They not only make the coffee, they have a huge role in determining the culture of your business. It does little good to spend a fortune on the best coffee if the person making the cup makes a poor-quality latte or is surly to the customers. A friendly, skilled barista at a coffee shop can be a huge asset to your coffee shop.

5.You’re Doing Some Studying

It’s test day and you’re sipping on some cold brew, organizing your flashcards, going over the study guide and listening to a lecture you found on YouTube. In fact, sitting next to someone busily typing away can increase your own concentration and mental effort. In two experiments, Belgian psychological scientists Kobe Desender, Sarah Beurms, and Eva Van den Bussche demonstrated that — under the right circumstances — concentration can be contagious. Which explains why it is so hard to do work/studying at work and why so many people tend to do it in coffee shops.

Having a lot of students in your shop, might be actually beneficial. Take as an example Shiru Cafe, a Japanese-owned coffee shop on Brown University’s campus. This coffee shop started to give away free cups of coffee to students in exchange for their personal information: name, phone number, email address, concentration in school, as well as professional interests. By doing so, students agree to receive information – via logos, apps, digital ads displayed in stores and on mobile devices, signs, surveys and well-briefed baristas – from the corporate sponsors who pay for those roasting beans. Moreover, as students give away their personal information via an app on their personal phones, Shiru Café might gain big amount of data on their consumers that they can later sell. Huge data in exchange for a free cup of coffee? Easy.

6.You Like the Vibe

You’re an artist/creative of some kind and this is where your best ideas manifest onto paper. There’s just something about the smell and energy of a coffee shop that gets your creative juices flowing. You somehow managed to drag out sipping a single 50 cent shot of espresso to 4 hours so they don’t ask you to leave, which is honestly impressive.

7.You Don’t Have Internet

One more situation that we all faced: no WiFi at home and all the neighbours’ have password harder than 12345678.

In this situation there is only one option: going out for a cup of coffee and unlimited Internet access in a neighbourhood café. Successful coffee shop owners have moved past just selling coffee to creating environments that encourage longer visits: surfing the Internet, working from their laptops, or communicating with friends, family, and colleagues. Wireless technology is changing the way people live. Hotspots (internet access areas that deploy wireless technology) can be found in airports, hotels, and coffee shops. Some offer free access while others require paid subscriptions. Offering free wireless Internet in a coffee shop is one sure way to boost the chances of success. People are now given the option to make a connection over a cup of coffee and over the internet.

8.You Want Instagram Likes

We all working through the adulthood in the 21st century and social media is a huge part in today’s social interaction.

That is why many people see it as a part of their (not necessarily real) self-identity and as a stepping stone to advance their modelling/singing/designer/hair dressing career. What better way to do it than ordering two cappuccinos by yourself to make the picture seem like you’re with someone, throw a Hudson filter on it (or even go all the way with VSCO), then add the hashtag #PicOfTheDay or #FoodPorn? You may leave 5 minutes later, but self-branding game on level.

This Instagram obsession works also other way around and builds brand image of a coffee shop: according to research by Zizzi, 18-35-year-olds spend five whole days a year browsing food images on Instagram, and 30 per cent would avoid a restaurant if their Instagram presence was weak. As for the reasons why: people like to know if they will enjoy their experience/food/drink even before going there. Basically saving time and money and getting to know if they will be able to take nice pictures-talking about enjoying design and vibe. Social Media is a good way to check whether your team is resonating with your crowd. If people are posting lots of pictures, you know you’re doing something right.

9.You’re on a Business Meeting

Business isn’t just conducted while at work. It can happen anywhere. Even before WeWork appeared, people were seeking less official and uptight work atmosphere. So they do not only work in coffee shop but also have job interviews or business negotiation meetings. As a social hub, coffee shop gives you feeling of a community working together rather than two separate sides discussing their terms, which makes people more open and willing to perceive other views and ideas.

10.You’re on a First Date

You finally got her/his number and it’s time to meet in real life (unless you met each other for the first time offline and not in Tinder). The plan is to go to an artisan coffee shop so your date knows you’re cool. Choose wisely or you just might lose your potential coffee mate.

How do I get there?The closest subway stop to the TODAY Plaza is the 47th – 50th Streets - Rockefeller Center station on the B,D,F,M trains. 24/7 parking is also available nearby at the Rockefeller Center Parking Garage at 53 West 48th Street. The garage is operated 24/7 and accepts reservations in advance. Hourly and daily parking rates apply.

What can I expect to see during my visit?

The TODAY Plaza is directly outside of Studio 1A – and dubbed our “window on the world.” Guests are able to peek inside to observe the live TODAY broadcast. Cameras will feature the Plaza audience throughout the show, and our TODAY anchors plan to make an appearance outside during the broadcast.

What COVID-19 protocols are in place?

Proof of vaccination is currently not required to visit the TODAY Plaza. In connection with your attendance, please be advised that TODAY’s policies, CDC guidelines, and the recommendations of health officials must be followed. Please note that any public location where people are present provides an inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19, and we cannot guarantee that any person will not be exposed during a visit.

What can/can’t I bring?

All guests will go through a security checkpoint upon arrival. Guests are welcome to bring beverages and snacks. Large items, such as luggage, are not permitted. TODAY reserves the right to deny admission at any time, for any reason.

Our TODAY broadcast is standing room only, and chairs cannot be provided. Guests requiring special accommodations should proceed to the front of the check-in line and alert the TODAY Plaza staff or security of their needs.

There are no restrooms on the plaza. Guests are advised to use the restrooms prior to arrival, but in case of emergency, there are public restrooms on the concourse level of Rockefeller Center.

Does the Plaza happen rain or shine?

Our TODAY broadcast happens rain or shine. However, if inclement weather becomes especially challenging and/or dangerous, the outdoor portion of our show may be affected. Also, in the event of breaking news coverage, our regularly scheduled programming could be affected.

Are there options for coffee and breakfast nearby?

There are several cafés & restaurants around Rockefeller Center, in close proximity to the Plaza. The TODAY Plaza team can recommend a few options upon arrival, or you can plan ahead by exploring options in Rockefeller Center .

Election latest: Sunak not taking questions amid talk of Tory battle to succeed him - as Dragon joins Starmer at brewery

A poll has found Reform's Nigel Farage would be the favourite to take over as Tory leader if Rishi Sunak loses the election. Labour says the Conservatives are already battling over the succession. Earlier, the transport secretary denied that the PM's D-Day blunder had lost the election.

Families with children have been hit hardest by benefit cuts over the past 14 years, according to a new report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS).

Parents who are out of work have seen the biggest fall in their incomes, with the IFS saying they had lost £5,500 per year, but in-work families had also seen their entitlements cut back. 

Families with children have seen their incomes fall by an average of £2,200 per year, the think tank said. 

Changes to the level of child tax credits and the "two-child limit" on Universal Credit payments affected families, as did the overall benefit cap, the IFS found. 

On Friday, the Conservatives announced plans to raise the high-income child benefit tax charge threshold to £120,000, increasing the number of families that would qualify.

But the IFS said this would only "partly" undo the changes of the past 14 years and "still leave the broad picture little changed".

61% of people quizzed in an exclusive Sky News poll think the NHS is in a "poor state", with parts of it "broken".

Reducing NHS waiting times is the issue voters want the next government to prioritise, with 39% of people saying it was their top issue. 

The same Sky News poll asked voters who they trust most to run the NHS. The majority - 32% - said Labour, while only 9% thought the Conservatives. 

But a quarter of those polled didn't think any party could be trusted with the NHS.

With waiting times on voters' minds, Sky's people and politics correspondent Nick Martin spoke to Jasmine, one of the millions waiting months, sometimes years, for treatment.

At 23, she has spent the last 11 years battling endometriosis and lives with what feels like "a ball of acid in the middle of my torso".

The latest Sky News poll tracker has the Conservatives on the same level of support - just 22.8% - as the day Liz Truss left office.

Labour has 43.6% of the share, while Reform UK is on 13.1%, Lib Dems on 9.6%, Greens on 5.7% and SN p on 3%.

Rishi Sunak took up a watering can and was encouraged to apply for an allotment garden by volunteers while on the campaign trail in County Durham. 

An opportunity for the media to ask questions of Rishi Sunak did not take place as was originally planned, likely following the fallout on Friday of his early return from D-Day commemorations.

Members of the public could be seen gathered on a hillside above the garden to try to catch a glimpse of the prime minister.

At the garden, Mr Sunak spoke with volunteers Margaret Lambert and Hilary Bellwood and watered plants with Jane MacBean, Conservative candidate for Bishop Auckland.

Sir Keir Starmer has promised to overhaul the business rates system, saying there's "not a level playing field between businesses that are online and those that are ... bricks and mortar".

The Labour leader was joined by Dragons' Den star Deborah Meaden at 3 Locks Brewery in Camden, London, to launch the party's plan for small businesses.

"We want small businesses to thrive because they are the backbone of our economy and they need that stability in our economy, and they need to know that their energy bills are actually going to be lower and stable," he said. 

Labour launched its plans for Great British Energy policy a week ago - a new, publicly owned company that would generate homegrown green energy across the country. 

Meaden voiced her support for the plans: "Businesses don't like being out of control of costs and energy is one of those costs that simply fluctuates beyond your control," she said.

Sir Keir pulled the first pint of the day at 10.55am and was heard saying "if all else fails", he will be back at the brewery on 5 July.

John Swinney says Rishi Sunak "completely destroyed" his credibility as prime minister by leaving D-Day commemorations early. 

Speaking to journalists on the campaign trail in Livingston, the Scottish First Minister said: "I think Rishi Sunak's credibility is completely destroyed by his departure from D-Day early and the insult he delivered to the veterans who had travelled to Normandy for that solemn occasion.

"It also, frankly, was a desertion of the international responsibilities of the prime minister.

"The prime minister and especially the Conservative election campaign is now utterly in tatters."

Mr Sunak was forced to apologise for leaving France before an international ceremony attended by world leaders, saying it had been a mistake - but he said it was important not to "politicise" the decision. 

The Tory battle bus has rolled into County Durham, with Rishi Sunak heading to two locations in the North East today - but don't expect him to be answering questions. 

The PM is not doing any interviews with national or broadcast media today and a possible huddle - when he takes questions from reporters off-camera - has been cancelled. 

He may, however, do some interviews with regional media. 

While the PM may not be speaking for himself today, much has been said this morning about his decision to bow out of D-Day commemorations early. 

Shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds called it "inexplicable" while Sir Ed Davey said it made him "pretty cross" and Transport Secretary Mark Harper labelled it a "mistake" - but said it wouldn't cost the Tories the election. 

The Lib Dem leader says he's "pretty cross" about Rishi Sunak's decision to leave D-Day commemorations early and has called on him to make a donation to a veterans' charity to make amends. 

Sir Ed Davey urged the Conservatives to give some of the cash donated to the party by Frank Hester, a businessman who was embroiled in a racism row, to charity.

"I think the Conservative Party should give £5m of that donation to a veterans' charity. I think if they did that, then people might be able to draw the line.

"But it's such a letdown for our whole country and our history, particularly for our brave veterans."

The Liberal Democrats have pledged to create three new national parks in England.

This manifesto commitment would bring the number of national parks in England up to 13, with the party saying it would spend £50m a year maintaining them. 

The Chilterns in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire are possible locations for the new parks, along with the Mendips, Cotswolds and Quantocks.

Other proposed areas include the Surrey Hills, Northumberland coast and Dorset. 

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey accused the Tories of having "broken too many promises to protect our countryside".

"It is hard to overstate the difference things like National Parks can make to entire communities," he said.

Reform UK and the Conservatives are neck-and-neck in a new poll of Welsh voters with each party taking an 18% share of those surveyed. 

But both trail Labour, which is far ahead on 45%, according to the survey by Redfield & Wilton. 

The poll of 960 Welsh voters put Plaid Cymru on 11%, Liberal Democrats on 5% and Greens on 4%. 

Only 39% of those who voted for the Conservatives in Wales in 2019 will vote Conservative again, the poll showed - with 32% of past Conservative voters saying they would defect to Reform UK.

It comes after the latest YouGov poll of UK voters for Sky News showed Reform had pulled to within two points of the Conservatives.

Everyone, no matter your skin type or tone, should use sunscreen daily — including people with melanin-rich skin. That’s because the natural melanin in skin doesn’t provide enough standalone protection from UV rays, which can lead to other consequences including sun damage, according to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Michelle Henry . However, finding one that doesn’t leave a white cast and provides the necessary protection to prevent skin damage can be a journey — and historically speaking, can be difficult.

• Type: There are two types of sunscreens: mineral and chemical. Mineral sunscreens, also known as physical sunscreens, sit on the surface of the skin and reflect UV light using active ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, absorb UV light and use chemical filters, like oxybenzone, avobenzone and octisalate, to convert it into heat that your body then releases, according to experts we spoke to in our guide on the best face sunscreens . Mineral sunscreens will typically leave a white cast on the skin, while chemical sunscreens do not, according to experts.
• SPF protection: Experts recommend using a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 protection, which is in line with the minimum SPF rating recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology .

It’s also free of mineral oil, so it’s a great option for those who worry about clogging their pores. It does have a baby oil scent, so if you’re sensitive to fragrance this may not be your best option.

How to shop for sunscreen.

When shopping for sunscreen that’s suitable for darker skin tones, our experts recommend considering key factors like the sunscreen type and consistency. Here’s what else to keep in mind while shopping: 

You should look for sunscreens with SPF 30 or higher regardless of skin tone, according to our dermatologists. For days where you are outside with more exposure, consider sunscreens with at least SPF 50 protection, says Henry.

That’s because SPF 30 only blocks 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 will give you slightly more protection by blocking 98% of UVB rays, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association . However, no sunscreen (regardless of how high the SPF is) can block 100% of the sun’s UVB rays, according to Henry.

Mineral versus chemical 

Both mineral and chemical sunscreens come with their own benefits and limitations for those with darker skin tones — the choice is ultimately a personal one, according to our experts. Mineral sunscreens will reflect UV light, while chemical sunscreens will absorb it, convert it and then release it. 

Chemical sunscreens typically have one of the following chemical filters in their formula: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and/or octinoxate. Historically, chemical sunscreens don’t leave behind an ashen white appearance on the skin, making them a reliable choice for those with darker skin, says Henry. 

A mineral sunscreen will typically have active ingredients like zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both. It’s best for kids and those with sensitive skin because the skin won’t absorb it, so they can avoid irritation, which is commonly seen with chemical sunscreens. It’s also great for pregnant women because oxybenzone (one of the main filters in chemical sunscreen) is linked to birth defects, according to experts in our guide to pregnancy-safe skin care .

Mineral sunscreens will generally provide more protection against harmful indoor light from common household items like light bulbs and computer screens compared to chemical sunscreens, according to Gohara. If you don’t protect your skin, exposure to this light can lead to conditions like melasma, she says. ( Melasma is mostly seen in women who have medium to dark skin tones, according to the AAD .)

The caveat with mineral sunscreens is that they typically leave white casts.

Consistency

• Lotions, gels and oils are easy to rub in and distribute an even layer of the product, according to our experts. 
• Spray sunscreens are typically easier to apply for children but you still need to rub them in to avoid a speckled, uneven application. 
• Powders help reduce shine for oily skin and are also easy to reapply on top of makeup.
• Sticks are a great option for the face area specifically around the eyes, according to the AAD. This is because they’re easy to control and maneuver, according to Weinstein. 

Water resistance

No sunscreen is sweat-proof or waterproof, according to Henry. However, some are water-resistant, which refers to how long the sunscreen will stay on and remain effective even after you get wet, according to the AAD. For example, if a sunscreen has 60 minutes of water resistance, you will need to reapply it 60 minutes after getting wet. If your favorite sunscreen isn’t water resistant, Henry recommends adding another sunscreen on top that is — especially if you plan on engaging in activities that will make you sweat or coming in contact with water.

If you have sensitive skin, our experts recommend using a mineral sunscreen. Since mineral sunscreens sit on top of your skin, they won’t absorb into the skin and, therefore, won’t trigger an unwanted, irritating reaction, according to experts. You should also avoid fragrances and other potential irritants, and when possible opt for a hypoallergenic sunscreen, according to our experts.

Dry skin types should look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin, while those with oily and acne-prone skin should look for noncomedogenic sunscreens because they are typically free of ingredients that would normally clog pores and cause further breakouts.

Some sunscreens have a tint to match your skin color. They will typically have iron oxide, which adds another layer of protection from UV rays or blue light emitted from your screens, says Weinstein. They also typically don’t leave behind white casts due to their pigmented formula.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that people of color, especially those with a darker complexion, don’t need sunscreen. People with darker skin tones have more melanin, which is not only responsible for the skin’s pigment, but also naturally provides sun protection. However, the protection you get from melanin alone is very minimal.

“Skin color is not sufficient protection from UV light to prevent burning or potential skin cancer in the future,” Henry says. Even though you may have melanin-rich skin, you’ll need external help in the form of sunscreen to avoid potential harm.

In fact, 90% of visible signs of aging come from unprotected daily sun exposure, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency . These signs come in the form of wrinkles, but in black and brown skin tones it might appear as hyperpigmentation, according to Gohara. Blue light can also worsen hyperpigmentation, specifically in people with dark skin, according to Henry. To combat this, many sunscreen brands use iron oxides to shield against visible light, like blue light.

“Tinted mineral sunscreens tend to blend a little bit better on darker skin tones,” says Weinstein.

They provide the same amount of protection from UVA and UVB rays as nontinted sunscreens, and they also protect the skin from visible light, too, because they are usually formulated with 3% iron oxides, which is the most effective amount, says Weinstein.

Appropriately applying sunscreen is the key to getting the most out of your SPF. Henry recommends layering your SPF on top of your daily face moisturizer .

• For the body , Weinstein recommends a lotion or cream because it’s easier to rub into the skin. “A spray can leave us speckled, it’s not necessarily an even application,” she says. For children, a spray may be easier to apply and you’ll need to rub it in quickly. When using a lotion or cream, you should use as much as it would take to fill a full shot glass and reapply every two hours.
• For the face , Weinstein recommends a lotion, oil or stick sunscreen because it better creates an even layer of protection. An easy trick to ensure you are applying enough is to place a line on your pointer finger, middle finger and ring finger and apply that amount to your face. To make sure you are evenly applying a stick sunscreen, you should swipe it across your face back and forth three times, she says.

In line with all of our experts’ guidance, you should reapply sunscreen every two hours. If sweating or swimming, you may have to reapply earlier based on the water resistance of your sunscreen of choice, which typically varies from 40 to 80 minutes. Sprays, misting oils and brush-on powders are usually easier to reapply throughout the day compared to other types of sunscreens, experts told us.
