10 Unique Things to Do in Central Florida

Written By: Nicki Webster

United States

best cities to visit in central florida

Florida is a popular travel destination for Americans and internationals alike. I’ve lived here for twenty plus years and the most common question I get after “ Are there gators in the lakes? ” is “ What is there to do in Florida outside of the theme parks”?  While a road trip to the Florida Keys or Miami is at the top of many people’s list, Central Florida has a lot to offer as well.

This guide goes beyond the usual stops like Walt Disney World, the Kennedy Space Center, and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. We already know about all of these, but there is so much more to central Florida than its famous attractions. But if you want to know about these, check out 11 Best Theme Parks in Florida To Visit

Table of Contents

Things to do in Central Florida Besides Theme Parks

There are many places to stay in Florida and you can check this guide to help you decide. Plus there is an abundance of unusual things to do in Central Florida, here are ten of my favorites that I often recommend:

1. Rainbow River

Sometimes referred to as “KP Hole”, this spring fed river is the crown jewel of Central Florida. Known for its pristine blue water and tubing, the spring head at Rainbow River Springs feeds the six-mile river run. You can ride the river on any type of watercraft, motorized or non-motorized but most people choose to float down the river.

Located in Dunnellon Florida, this is one of the most beautiful and natural rivers runs in Florida.  If you have your own tube or any floating device, you can float the river for free!

  • You can use your own tube or rent one from several companies on the river.

2. Fort Island Beach

When you mention beaches in Florida most people think of South Beach, Daytona Beach, or Clearwater. Few if any have heard of Fort Island Beach on the west coast of Florida. Ford Island beach holds a treat for anyone that enjoys a day at the beach. Few tourists, no crowds, beautiful white sand, and clear water. Read more: Best Things to do in Daytona Beach, Florida

You do not have to hit the Panhandle to find a public beach that is public, yet not crowded. Check out Best Beaches in Florida for Fun in the Sun

  • There is a sectioned off swimming area which is great for kids.  There are plenty of rock pools so you can search for crabs or fish from the rocks.

3. Devils Den Spring

Florida is famous for its springs. The state is home to 700 springs. However, the Devil’s Den is a special and unusual one. This eerier spring is underground, and you must be brave enough to journey through the medieval stone stairs not knowing what awaits you.

Sure, you can look at the pictures and get an idea.  But until you take the plunge you cannot grasp the adrenaline rush you will get once inside Devil’s Den spring.

best things to do in flroida | devil's den spring

Given that this spring is an underground one, this is not necessarily a full day out – unless you dive. You will most likely spend a couple of hours exploring and then be ready to soak up some sun. The Devil’s Den Spring is privately owned, entrance is by appointment only.

Watch the video of Devil’s Den Spring on YouTube

  • Predominantly for divers, this spring is open to snorkelers and swimmers alike.

4. Amphicars at Disney

Did you know that there are cars that can drive on water? I know this sounds crazy, but it is true. Back in day, Hans Trippel , a German designer came up with the idea to invent cars that could drive on land then convert to an “amphicar” – water car.

You can ride them at Disney Springs in Orlando, Florida. This is the only place in the world where the public can take a ride with a captain.

things to do in central florida. this weekend | disney amphicar

You can make a reservation from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., weather permitting. Each amphicar can accommodate up to three guests (which can be classified as three adults or two adults and two small children).

The cost is $125 per car.

  • If you book two vehicles, you will get a $25 discount.
  • Likewise, if you eat at the Boathouse, you will get a $25 discount when you show your receipt.

Watch the video to see how much fun it is!

$125 may to ride might seem steep but there is a ton of maintenance required to keep these antiques operating on the water.  The ride is twenty minutes, which is plenty of time to enjoy the experience. All things considered, I thought it was worth the cost because the experience is so unusual.

5. The Wonder House

No visit to central Florida is complete without taking in some of the area’s history. While Florida is famous for theme parks and beaches, it is also home to many mansions packed with enchanting stories.

The Wonder House is in Bartow Florida and was the creation of Conrad Schuck. Conrad was of German heritage, and there are several stories about him being a spy.

At one point, he was arrested and jailed for three days during World War II, then released. Conrad was not a spy; ultimately, the FBI issued a press release declaring that Conrad Schuck was not a German spy.

fun things to do in central florida

Conrad opened his home to the public in 1934, and it became a popular local tourist attraction for about 30 years. Visitors paid a dime to see the ponds and 25 cents to wander around the interior.

The house if full of hidden surprises!

There is a moat that runs from the basement of the house through to the gardens. There are sunken bathtubs with mirrors to the lower floor. A large collection of preserved animals, some spooky ones. And many technology marvels beyond it is time. The house is now privately owned and in the process of restoration however you can take a tour.

  • Tours are offered over the weekend and require reservations.

6. The Mermaids of Weeki Wachee

Who does not love mermaids? And you do not have to go to Disney to see one. In fact, the mermaids of Weeki Wachi are much more impressive.

Located at Weeki Wachee Springs, a state park that is somewhat famous in Florida due to the live mermaids. The park also hosts Buccaneer Bay and Buccaneer Bay Water Park. The mermaid show in Florida are full-blown production shows with a story, characters, dancing, and singing. There are three shows a day. And, if you want to watch all three, you can – it is included in your admission!

Following the show, you get the chance to meet the mermaids and take photographs with them.

7. Lakeridge Winery

Everyone associates wine with California but there are other wineries across the country that are lesser known. Florida, while hot and humid is home to a winery that produces its own label. This is not your ordinary non-Californian winery. This is a full-blown vineyard and winery.

things to do in central florida for adults

You can take a tour through the winery which includes complimentary sampling of all the wines. If you choose to you can also tour the vineyard.

Lakeridge Winery also host many festivals and events throughout the year:

  • Wine and Cheese
  • BBQ and Blues
  • Seafood Festival
  • And many more.
  • For the complete list of events see the schedule here .

In addition to festivals and events, you can also try out grape stomping!

8. Westgate River Ranch Resort and Rodeo

Some traditions such as the Rodeo still live on at Westgate River Ranch Resort.  Every Saturday, a real competition rodeo takes place ! Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children, and what value for the money.

At the halfway point, they let kids chase a calf to grab a piece of string loosely tied on its tai, harmless fun and no one gets hurt.

central florida things to do | rodeo

After the rodeo, join the free street party and you might meet a cowboy! In addition to the Rodeo, which is worth a visit alone, there is a plethora of things to do:

  • Westgate River Ranch has a full-service marina (BYOBoat), or you can rent a boat.
  • Kid’s adventure park that includes everything from a zip line, wall climbing to a mechanical bull.
  • Horseback Riding
  • Petting Farm
  • Pony Rides
  • Trap or Skeet Shooting
  • Archery Range
  • Pontoon Boat Rental
  • Swamp Buggy and Air Boat Rides
  • Golf Course
  • Driving Range
  • Bicycle Rentals
  • Sports Equipment Rentals –for tennis, basketballs, horseshoes, volleyballs, kick balls, soccer balls, and more.

If you stay on site you can choose to book a hotel room, a caboose, cottage, or a glamping teepee.

9. Cape Romano Dome House

Located close to Marco Island, this house has real rich history and viewing the remnants of the house requires you to take to the ocean.

Built by Bob Lee, a now-deceased retired oil producer in 1980. The self-sustaining solar-powered dome homes started as a dream vacation home.

The masterpiece consisted of six connected dome structures for a total of 2,400 square feet. The house boasted three bedrooms and three bathrooms

what to do in central florida | dome houses over water

Hurricane Andrew hit South Florida in 1992 and it damaged the windows and the Lee family left and sold it to John Tosto in 2005. The new owner never secured the structure. In 2017, hurricane Irma hit, and two of the original six domes sunk

The dome homes can only be accessed via water. You can either navigate to them yourself or take a tour to view them. Hurry, while still visible above the water today they will not be forever.

Watch my video tour of Cape Romano Dome House

10. The Crystal River

Nestled away on the west coast of Florida lays a costal town that is famous for manatees! Stumbling across a Manatee on the Crystal River is as sure as finding fish in the ocean – they are everywhere.

The Crystal River is the only place in America where it is legal to swim with manatees although it is a felony to approach or harass a manatee.

This said, they will swim up to you and so long as they come to you and you don’t pet them or prevent them from swimming you can watch these amazing sea cows up close.

swimming with manatees in florida

You can see the manatees at The Sisters Spring during the winter months without having to get on the water. However, the best way to see them is on the water.

You can bring your own boat rent a boat, kayak, paddleboat or even take a tour to view these magnificent creatures. But a tour is not required! And these are my favorite things to do in Central Florida that offer alternative ideas.

Stretching from Key Largo to the southernmost point of the continental U.S. in Key West, the Florida Keys are a veritable paradise. Pick any Key along the way and you're guaranteed a tropical getaway with no need for a passport. Fill your itinerary with activities like boating, diving, fishing, snorkeling coral reefs, feeding 10-foot tarpon at Robbie's , and generally enjoying one of the best destinations in the world for a let-your-hair-down vacation.

Key Largo boasts the adults-only Bungalows Key Largo , the first all-inclusive in the Keys, while Playa Largo is a solid choice for families or anyone who loves an action-packed trip. There are pools and water sports like sailing, parasailing, and kayaking.

For the best seafood in the Keys (and house-made Key lime pie), book a table at The Fish House . The family-owned Key Largo institution is one of the only restaurants sourcing exclusively from local fishermen, so the fish is as fresh as it gets.

Crystal River

Crystal River is a sleepy, tucked-away destination on Florida's Gulf Coast. It doesn't have much to offer in terms of food or nightlife, but it's home to the most striking natural beauty of Florida, especially for those who love being on the water.

A clear kayak tour with Get Up and Go Kayaking is the perfect way to explore Hunter Springs, Jurassic Springs, and Three Sisters Springs. You may spot dolphins, turtles, or pelicans, and wintertime visitors even have a good chance of paddling alongside the manatees who migrate into these enchanting springs each year. The nearby Plantation Resort on Crystal River offers simple, no-frills waterfront accommodations spread across 232 acres on Kings Bay.

For an even more delightfully Floridian vacation activity, head to one of the legendary live mermaid shows at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park , about a 40-minute drive south of Crystal River.

Orlando and Central Florida

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Orlando is the destination of choice for theme park lovers, as it's home to Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, Discovery Cove, Legoland, and more. These spots will always be popular for families — while you're there, get out and explore more of the region.

For example, head due east from Orlando and you'll land at NASA's Kennedy Space Center , which offers a slew of space-travel artifacts and simulators in its visitor complex. You can even watch rocket launches. To the north, quieter Winter Park is considered the Palm Beach of central Florida. There, you can enjoy lakeside sunsets and stroll under canopies of old oak trees. Eat breakfast at Briarpatch and dinner at Hillstone Restaurant .

There are also plenty of ways to get outside once you've left tourist-centric Orlando. About a 90-minute drive from the Orlando area but still in central Florida, you've got the Blue Grotto , a 100-foot-deep clearwater cavern that's popular with divers, and also the nearby Rainbow Springs State Park , where you can lazily float down Rainbow River in an inner tube.

Naples is another gem on Florida's western coast — the area is called the Paradise Coast for a reason. Romantic and ritzy, The city is known for beautiful white-sand beaches, sprawling golf courses, high-end restaurants, and upscale shopping.

If retail therapy is on the agenda (and it should be in Naples), head to Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South to put a dent in your credit limit. Or, if natural attractions are more your speed, visit the Naples Botanical Garden , Clam Pass Park , or the Naples Zoo . Art lovers will also find a lot to enjoy at Artis — Naples , a multidisciplinary organization home to The Baker Museum and the Naples Philharmonic, plus the many impressive art galleries dotting the city.

Miami and Fort Lauderdale

Jamie Ditaranto/Travel + Leisure

No place in Florida sizzles quite like Miami. It's a global city with great eats, world-class hotels, and party venues. In the uber-Instagrammable Art Deco District in South Beach, you'll find bubbling creativity and the sort of old-meets-new style that keeps Miami on the map. Across Biscayne Bay, Wynwood Walls has street art and massive murals galore.

The Brightline high-speed train connects Miami to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. In the seaside metropolis of Fort Lauderdale, you can work your way down the Ale Trail for craft brews and bites, or board the Water Taxi to get a sense of why people call the city the "Venice of America." Hop off the boat at Las Olas Boulevard for the city's best shopping and dining.

August is by far the best time to have an indulgent five-star experience. With the overlap of Miami Spa Months and Miami Spice Restaurant Months , you get a chance to book ultra-luxe spa treatments and dine at the city's best restaurants for a fraction of the usual price.

The Palm Beaches

The Palm Beaches showcase the best of Florida. An umbrella term for the cities of Palm Beach County, the region includes West Palm Beach, Palm Beach, Wellington, Delray Beach, Jupiter, and Boca Raton.

The sheer diversity of activities available in the area is its main strength: You can shop, surf, scuba dive, enjoy brunch with your pup, watch an international polo match, or relax on 47 miles of shoreline. How about meeting rehabilitating sea turtles at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center , or taking a two-night cruise to the Bahamas ? You can even catch a Broadway musical at the Kravis Center or get up close and personal with rhinos, giraffes, and zebras at Lion Country Safari , a cage-free, drive-through zoo spread over 300 acres.

If you're after a ritzy resort stay, Palm Beach and Boca Raton have you covered. Nothing beats The Breakers — you'll be treated like royalty — but The Colony Hotel , Eau Palm Beach , and The Boca Raton are all chic choices.

Across the bridge, West Palm Beach has a big-city feel without the headaches of traffic and congestion. Take the free trolley between Clematis Street, CityPlace , and the waterfront, or head out to Grandview Public Market in the trendy Warehouse District.

Guests of the Hilton West Palm Beach get to enjoy Galley , a restaurant with tasty cocktails, fresh seafood, and gourmet pizzas, while those staying at The Ben West Palm and Canopy by Hilton West Palm Beach Downtown have access to rooftops with stellar views.

St. Augustine

As the oldest continuously inhabited city in the U.S., St. Augustine has had a lot of time to get things right. After Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de LeĂłn's arrival in 1513, a European settlement was established in the mid-1500s. Today, it's a walkable town imbued with intrigue; whispers of the past swirl through every cobblestone alley.

You can get a feel for St. Augustine's colonial history at the imposing waterfront Castillo de San Marcos , built in the late 1600s, or on a ghost tour once darkness envelops the city. When it comes to food and drink, try Michael's , The Floridian , or O.C. White's . Finish the evening with a cocktail at Ice Plant before heading to your hotel.

For the perfect marriage of history and luxury, book a stay at the adults-only Collector Luxury Inn & Gardens , where you can tour the grounds with the property historian and gather for expertly crafted cocktails at The Well Bar. For a taste of old-world elegance, St. Francis Inn — built in 1791 — is a homey bed-and-breakfast that captures the spirit of the city. It's located right on St. George Street, St. Augustine's main drag.

One of the loveliest times to visit is during the holidays, when the annual Nights of Lights event sets the city aglow.

Amelia Island

Quiet little Amelia Island is popular with visitors who appreciate a charming seaside destination with no crowds in sight. Rolling dunes and marshes add interest to the coastal scenery. There are beaches, of course, but nature lovers will also want to check out Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve and Fort Clinch State Park , home to the 19th-century Fort Clinch plus nature trails, campgrounds, and wildlife.

Another Amelia Island attraction is the oldest lighthouse in Florida, standing 64 feet tall. Charming beachfront lodges and inns line Amelia Island, so visitors have their pick of endearing accommodations. Head to historic downtown Fernandina Beach to shop or chow down at the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival , an annual tradition on the first weekend in May.

Tampa Bay Area

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

Tampa and its surrounding neighborhoods make up a tri-city haven on the Gulf Coast. Ride roller coasters at Busch Gardens , or head over to Clearwater Marine Aquarium for an encounter with the slippery stars of the Dolphin Tale movies.

Nearby Clearwater Beach is a laid-back town with one of the best beaches in Florida . Visit during the Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival to see monstrous sand sculptures. Stay at Opal Sands — it's a half-mile beach walk from the festival, and each one of its 230 guest rooms is waterfront. Together with St. Petersburg, the area is also an under-the-radar art and culture mecca, full of murals and museums such as the visually stunning Salvador Dalí museum .

The Florida Panhandle consists of Pensacola, Panama City Beach, Destin, and Tallahassee, the capital of Florida. It's a popular spring break spot known for its calm Gulf waters and white-sand beaches. But beach day alternatives abound: Visitors can hike, bike, or canoe in St. Andrews State Park or start happy hour early at Panama City Beach institutions like the delightfully over-the-top Pineapple Willy's (don't leave without ordering a po' boy with your frozen drink). In Destin, Big Kahuna's Water & Adventure Park will keep the whole family entertained.

A peaceful island city with pastel homes, Cedar Key is a charmer. Visitors can expect secluded beaches and botanical gardens to wander, plus nearby natural springs to swim and paddle around in. Cedar Key is a simple spot, so it flies under the Florida tourism radar, but it's a nice place for anyone seeking a vacation that's a bit quieter than the state's more happening hot spots.

Some fun activities in and around Cedar Key include a day trip to nearby Manatee Springs State Park for an up-close animal encounter, especially during the cooler months, or just to bike, kayak, and hike. There's also Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge , Cedar Key Museum State Park , and the Cedar Key Historical Society if you want to learn more about the area.

Everglades National Park

Stephanie Pollak/Travel + Leisure

A national park trip may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Florida, but the state is full of one-of-a-kind spots and Everglades National Park is its crown jewel.

Encompassing 1.5 million acres of preserved wetlands on the southern tip of the Floridian peninsula, the Everglades is actually a slow-moving "river of grass," comprising unique habitats such as coastal mangroves, sawgrass marshes, pine flatwoods, and more. It's a wildlife lover's paradise, teeming with alligators, snakes, fish, more than 360 species of birds, and even endangered animals like the Florida panther, American crocodile, and West Indian manatee.

For those eager to explore, trails and guided tours are available; the main entrances are at Shark Valley, Florida City near Homestead, and Everglades City on the Gulf Coast. Visit during the park's dry season (November to April) for lower temperatures, more active wildlife, and fewer mosquitoes.

16 of the best beaches in Florida

T he peninsula of Florida offers thousands of miles of coastline and beaches, from the Atlantic on the east, the state's "panhandle" in the northwest, and the Gulf Coast with postcard-perfect sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico.

These are some of the most beautiful places in Florida, and each one is worth taking the time to explore. While it seems impossible to narrow down the beach options to a "best of" list, we do have some favorites to share.

The best regions for a Florida beach getaway

From Panama City Beach to the southernmost point of the U.S. in Key West, there's an overwhelming number of Florida beach vacation options. Not sure where to start? Let's begin by breaking down each region.

Atlantic Coast beaches

There are three sections of the Atlantic coast: the Northeast, Central East and Southeast. Each region is further divided into "coasts." The First Coast is found at the northeastern end of Florida. The Space Coast is in the central region. And, in the southeastern portion of the state, you'll find the Treasure Coast, Gold Coast and Florida Keys.

Panhandle beaches

The Panhandle is a gorgeous part of the state, with the type of sugar-soft sand beaches that most people dream about. Accommodations here won't drain your pocket as quickly as a stay in Miami or Naples.

The Panhandle stretches from the Florida-Alabama border near Pensacola east to the state capital of Tallahassee. In between those two points are plenty of beach towns like Fort Walton, Destin, Panama City and Port St. Joe. There are also standout nature reserves such as Apalachicola National Forest, Tate's Hell State Forest and Wakulla Springs .

Gulf Coast beaches

What is the lure of Florida's Gulf Coast? Cities like Tampa, Clearwater, Sarasota, Fort Myers and Naples populate the area and are home to excellent hotels, restaurants and shopping. Those vibrant destinations are paired with barrier islands and miles upon miles of beachfront — all with incredible sunset views over the Gulf of Mexico.

Whether you're looking for a nightclub offering salsa dancing or a hidden cove where you can spy manatees, you'll find it on Florida's Gulf Coast.

Now that you've been fully downloaded on the geography, it's time to dive into our list of the 17 best beaches in Florida.

Ponte Vedra Beach

The St. Augustine area, home to Ponte Vedra Beach, is an excellent place to decamp for a sunshine-filled vacation. This Atlantic Coast enclave is just a 35-mile drive southeast of Jacksonville International Airport (JAX). While you might know this area due to its affiliation with the PGA Tour, Floridians vacation here for the wide beaches made from coquina shells and Appalachian quartz.

The 40-foot sand dunes are some of the highest on any Florida beach and while there are plenty of palm trees in sight, visitors are also treated to stately live oaks draped with Spanish moss and maritime hammocks. Dogs are allowed on this beach and there are picnic tables and grills at the South Ponte Vedra Beach recreation area.

Cocoa Beach

People from across the U.S. have probably heard about famed Cocoa Beach, which is actually a group of beaches that span 72 miles along the Atlantic Ocean. On a barrier island, the secluded stretch of sand at Playalinda Beach within Canaveral National Seashore is a can't-miss destination.

If you're cruising out of Port Canaveral, a visit to the 3-acre beach at Jetty Park is in order. There's a 1,500-foot fishing pier on-site, along with covered picnic pavilions, showers and restrooms. You can rent chairs, umbrellas, kayaks and boogie boards from vendors on the beach.

Surfers congregate around Cocoa Beach Pier, where there are also some good restaurants and shopping. The 5-acre Alan Shepard Park with its oceanfront picnic areas is also popular, as is the 10-acre Sidney Fischer Park with picnic pavilions, showers and restrooms.

Four recreation areas make up Vero Beach, a tony enclave on Florida's Atlantic Coast. If you're a Disney fan, you may already be familiar with Wabasso Beach Park since it's right next door to Disney's Vero Beach Resort. It's a wonderful wide stretch of golden sand with calm waters that are great for swimming.

Related: How you can save hundreds of dollars by renting Disney Vacation Club points

North of Wabasso is Golden Sands Beach Park, where you can swim and snorkel (lifeguards are on duty) and enjoy a picnic lunch. Seating and grills are on-site. Jaycee Park is on the southern end of Vero Beach; it's a massive 8-acre oceanfront park with an on-site restaurant, playground, boardwalk and picnic area. There's also a buoyed swimming area.

Finally, just about a mile south of Jaycee Park is Humiston Beach Park, which is close to Vero Beach's shopping district and hosts many festivals throughout the year.

Nestled between West Palm Beach and Jupiter, Juno is best known for its nesting sea turtles (from May to October) that bring tourists to the barrier island sandwiched between the Atlantic and Intracoastal.

Year-round, the Juno Beach Pier attracts plenty of fishing activity, as well as sightseers and sunrise chasers looking for prime viewing spots. Additionally, the beach brings surfers and kiteboarders looking to catch large swells among the salty breezes.

Get to know more about the area's turtle-famed history at Loggerhead Marinelife Center, paddle through mangroves at Juno Dunes Natural Area and wind down with plenty of haunts dedicated to craft brews and live tunes.

John D. MacArthur Beach State Park

If you want to know what Southeast Florida looked like before industrialization and commercialization, look no further than Singer Island in Palm Beach County. It's a barrier island along the Atlantic Coast and home to John D. MacArthur Beach State Park.

Visitors come for the swimming, snorkeling and fishing opportunities, but there are also nature trails, a playground, picnic areas and a place to rent kayaks. There's a 1,600-foot boardwalk leading to the beach that stretches 2 miles along the coast.

If you've got kids and beach toys in tow, take the complimentary tram and save that walk. Just be aware that there is no lifeguard on duty at this beach.

South Beach

Maybe you've already heard everything you need to know about South Beach, Miami's hot spot . But we have to include it on the list because it's not just the place to visit in Miami — it's also one of the most famous beaches in America. The 2.2-mile white sand beach on the Gold Coast stretches from 23rd Street south to the tip of the barrier island.

Lummus Park is known to bring the volleyballers, while the adjacent promenade is great for breezy dog walks and jogs. Ocean Drive runs parallel to the beach, and the area between 5th and 15th streets is probably the most touristy and certainly the busiest.

Storied art deco hotels line the beach and even if you're not staying nearby, you must visit and spend some time walking along the water's edge here to see all the glamorous locals and visitors.

Bahia Honda State Park

An island located in the lower Florida Keys, this beach is a tropical destination framed by iconic palm trees and known for its pristine, crystal-clear waters. A popular spot for birding — especially to see species wading and along the shore — it's known to bring in nature lovers.

A hot spot for boaters, you can also park for the day and enjoy some time paddling or snorkeling. You can even stargaze at night since there's such low light pollution in the area. For your convenience, there are cabins and a campground, concession stands and a restaurant, picnic pavilions, shower stations and restrooms. Plus, leashed pets are permitted in certain areas of the park.

While Bahia Honda may have once been a hidden Keys gem, it's no longer a secret. Arrive early to avoid park closures when it's at capacity.

Fort Jefferson Beach

It's remote, it's isolated and you'll need to take a long ride by ferry or short ride by seaplane to get here, but the shores of Fort Jefferson Beach in Dry Tortugas National Park are arguably the best in the Florida Keys.

Related: The best US national parks you should visit at least once (or twice)

Just 70 miles from Key West, the historic 19th-century fort atop a remote island housed soldiers throughout the Civil War before being designated a national monument. Today, it sits empty, save for the few tourists who visit each day to walk its halls and snorkel its sandy shores, where tropical fish and living coral are easily seen in the shallow, clear waters.

Panama City Beach

The thing to remember when planning a Florida beach vacation is that there is a lot of coastline. So, when we say "Panama City Beach," you may think of a mile or two of sand on the state's Emerald Coast — but it's actually 27 miles of sand along the Panhandle with nearly 100 public access points.

If you're looking for solitude and sunshine, check out the eastern edge of Panama City Beach. Look to Shell Island, a 7-mile-long barrier island — it's only accessible by boat, but it's worth the extra effort.

If you want an undeveloped beach without the boat ride, check out nearby St. Andrews State Park, where you can also book a campsite. Families (and anyone looking for a more energetic vibe) prefer Pier Park, which offers thousands of square feet of shopping right alongside the beach and a variety of oceanfront restaurants.

Navarre Beach

If you're seeking a laid-back refuge, consider a trip to "Florida's most relaxing place," along the Emerald Coast, situated on Santa Rosa Island just west of Destin.

For watersports, there's snorkeling and diving, or you can explore the beautiful surroundings on a hike or bike ride. Plus, the 1,500-foot fishing pier sits 30 feet above the water offering great casting conditions.

Visit local wildlife at the Gulf Breeze Zoo, Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge and Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center, then grab a bite at one of the award-winning eateries known for fresh fare paired with stunning seaside views.

St. Pete Beach

St. Pete Beach has been a major tourist destination since the Don CeSar Hotel was first built in 1928; the distinctive pink palace was designed as a homage to a Moorish-style estate.

The beach, along a barrier island just west of St. Petersburg, is a draw because it offers both undeveloped stretches of sand along with places where you can indulge in water sports like kiteboarding, windsurfing, parasailing and stand-up paddleboarding.

The revitalized 26-acre St. Pete Pier overlooking Tampa Bay debuted in May 2020. It's a place to walk, cycle, swim, shop and more. Restaurants like Doc Ford's Rum Bar, Fresco's Waterfront Bistro and Driftwood Cafe line the pier.

Clearwater Beach

With its soft, sugar-white beaches and shallow waters, Clearwater Beach is a top spot for families. One of the state's widest beaches, it's perfect for everything from kite flying to sandcastle building.

Wind down at the beach's iconic Pier 60, which has been hosting nightly sunset events complete with live music, entertainers and arts and crafts vendors for decades.

The 1,080-foot fishing pier is the premier spot to try to catch the "green flash" as the sun takes its last dip into the Gulf. Visit in April for the annual Sugar Sand Festival, when artists from around the world create jaw-dropping sculptures made entirely of sand.

Siesta Key Beach

It's wide enough to accommodate beach volleyball games, sandcastle building and its fair share of sunbathers. The sand is fine, fluffy and bright white, and the water is calm and clear. If that isn't the recipe for a perfect Florida beach, what is?

It's no secret the 8-mile-long island known as Siesta Key is among the Sunshine State's finest. But few wander down to the small stretch known as Crescent Beach, where you can climb over a seawall to Point of Rocks, a collection of boulders that give way to serene tidal pools. Visit on Sunday evenings for the weekly drum circle that gathers on the beach.

Naples Municipal Beach

There is something special about the Naples area. Travelers visit to enjoy those white-sand beaches with emerald-green water lapping at the shore.

If you're looking for luxury accommodations, such as The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort Naples , or Inn at Pelican Bay, you'll find them here. But if you gravitate toward beach cottages and bungalows, there are plenty to choose from here as well.

Naples is home to nature reserves, trendy shopping thoroughfares and incredible restaurants. If you're looking to spend a day out in the sunshine, head to Naples Municipal Beach and Fishing Pier. If you're lucky, you'll see dolphins swimming right off the shoreline.

Marco Island

Upscale travelers love this luxurious island just south of Naples. It's the only developed island along Florida's Ten Thousand Islands and offers easy access to the well-preserved natural habitat with direct entry to the Gulf of Mexico and neighboring estuaries.

A fishing town also known for its high-end resorts, Marco Island offers a taste of the good life with laid-back vibes. Bookmark strolls at Tigertail Beach and South Marco Beach along the way.

For those who are traveling on a budget, there are affordable hotels or motels, as well as camping offered at Collier Seminole State Park. Go shelling, enjoy an abundance of fresh seafood, peruse art and shop for beachy trinkets galore.

Lovers Key State Park

Part of the charm of this beauty is that it's hidden away on a barrier island between Naples and Fort Myers. It's a haven for wildlife, including bald eagles and bottlenose dolphins.

Hop in a kayak to explore the island's canals and you'll likely spot manatees, turtles and plenty of shorebirds. Truth be told, Lovers Key is more often near-empty than not, overshadowed by the glitzier options in the nearby beach towns, but it's hands-down one of the most romantic beaches as a result, more than earning its moniker.
