Safely expanding access to psychedelic treatments requires the guidance of trained, licensed therapists in partnership with a world-class medical team. Experience Ketamine Treatment with a Therapist of Your Choice

What people are saying

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) gets to the root of mental health issues rather than merely providing tools to manage symptoms.

journey psych

I have felt supported every step of the way and being part of a larger community has contributed to my growth as a KAP practitioner. At Journey Clinical, I feel secure that my clients are receiving quality treatment.

journey psych

I love Journey Clinical because of its collaborative care model. Journey Clinical is supporting clinicians in doing this work in community, in collaboration, and doing it well.

journey psych

Many people who have been in therapy for years or who have tried many different kinds of medications such as SSRIs feel like they’ve hit a wall. KAP has given people an opportunity to break through that barrier and find new ways of being.

journey psych

The power of our model is collaborative care. We believe therapists are the population best equipped to deliver these treatments, as an adjunct to therapy.

Want to Give Your Life More Meaning? Think of It As a ‘Hero’s Journey’

journey psych

Y ou might not think you have much in common with Luke Skywalker, Harry Potter, or Katniss Everdeen. But imagining yourself as the main character of a heroic adventure could help you achieve a more meaningful life.

Research published earlier this year in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology touts the benefits of reframing your life as a Hero’s Journey—a common story structure popularized by the mythologist Joseph Campbell that provides a template for ancient myths and recent blockbusters. In his 1949 book The Hero with a Thousand Faces , Campbell details the structure of the journey, which he describes as a monomyth. In its most elementary form, a hero goes on an adventure, emerges victorious from a defining crisis, and then returns home changed for the better.

“The idea is that there’s a hero of some sort who experiences a change of setting, which could mean being sent off to a magical realm or entering a new thing they’re not used to,” says study author Benjamin A. Rogers, an assistant professor of management and organization at Boston College. “That sets them off on a quest where they encounter friends and mentors, face challenges, and return home to benefit their community with what they’ve learned.”

According to Rogers’ findings, perceiving your life as a Hero’s Journey is associated with psychological benefits such as enhanced well-being, greater life satisfaction, feeling like you’re flourishing, and reduced depression. “The way that people tell their life story shapes how meaningful their lives feel,” he says. “And you don’t have to live a super heroic life or be a person of adventure—virtually anyone can rewrite their story as a Hero’s Journey.”

More From TIME

The human brain is wired for stories, Rogers notes, and we respond to them in powerful ways. Previous research suggests that by the time we’re in our early 20s, most of us have constructed a narrative identity—an internalized and evolving life story—that explains how we became the person we are, and where our life might go in the future. “This is how we've been communicating and understanding ourselves for thousands of years,” he says. Rogers’ research suggests that if people view their own story as following a Hero’s Journey trajectory, it increases meaning regardless of how they initially perceived their lives; even those who thought their lives had little meaning are able to benefit.

While Rogers describes a “re-storying intervention” in his research, some psychologists have used the Hero’s Journey structure as part of their practice for years. Lou Ursa, a licensed psychotherapist in California, attended Pacifica Graduate Institute, which is the only doctoral program in the country focused on mythology. The university even, she notes, houses Campbell’s personal library. As a result, mythology was heavily integrated into her psychology grad program. In addition to reflecting on what the Hero’s Journey means to her personally, she often brings it up with clients. “The way I talk about it is almost like an eagle-eye view versus a snake-eye view of our lives,” she says. “So often we’re just seeing what’s in front of us. I think that connecting with a myth or a story, whether it’s the Hero’s Journey or something else, can help us see the whole picture, especially when we’re feeling lost or stuck.”

As Rogers’ research suggests, changing the way you think about the events of your life can help you move toward a more positive attitude. With that in mind, we asked experts how to start reframing your life story as a Hero’s Journey.

Practice reflective journaling

Campbell described more than a dozen key elements of a Hero’s Journey, seven of which Rogers explored in his research: protagonist, shift, quest, allies, challenge, transformation, and legacy. He says reflecting on these aspects of your story—even if it’s just writing a few sentences down—can be an ideal first step to reframe your circumstances. Rogers offers a handful of prompts that relate back to the seven key elements of a Hero’s Journey. To drill in on “protagonist,” for example, ask yourself: What makes you you ? Spend time reflecting on your identity, personality, and core values. When you turn to “shift,” consider: What change or new experience prompted your journey to become who you are today? Then ponder what challenges stand in your way, and which allies can support or help you in your journey. You can also meditate on the legacy your journey might leave.

Ask yourself who would star in the movie of your life

One way to assess your inner voice is to figure out who would star in a movie about your life, says Nancy Irwin, a clinical psychologist in Los Angeles who employs the Hero’s Journey concept personally and professionally. Doing so can help us “sufficiently dissociate and see ourselves objectively rather than subjectively,” she says. Pay attention to what appeals to you about that person: What traits do they embody that you identify with? You might, for example, admire the person’s passion, resilience, or commitment to excellence. “They inspire us because there’s some quality that we identify with,” Irwin says. “Remember, you chose them because you have that quality yourself.” Keeping that in mind can help you begin to see yourself as the hero of your own story.

Go on more heroic adventures—or just try something new

In classic Hero’s Journey stories, the protagonist starts off afraid and refuses a call to adventure before overcoming his fears and committing to the journey. Think of Odysseus being called to fight the Trojans, but refusing the call because he doesn’t want to leave his family. Or consider Rocky Balboa: When he was given the chance to fight the world’s reigning heavyweight champion, he immediately said no—before ultimately, of course, accepting the challenge. The narrative has proven timeless because it “reflects the values of society,” Rogers says. “We like people who have new experiences and grow from their challenges.”

He suggests asking yourself: “If I want to have a more meaningful life, what are the kinds of things I could do?” One possible avenue is seeking out novelty, whether that’s as simple as driving a new way home from work or as dramatic as finally selling your car entirely and committing to public transportation.

Be open to redirection

The Hero’s Journey typically starts with a mission, which prompts the protagonist to set off on a quest. “But often the road isn’t linear,” says Kristal DeSantis, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Austin. “There are twists, turns, unexpected obstacles, and side quests that get in the way. The lesson is to be open to possibility.”

That perspective can also help you flip the way you see obstacles. Say you’re going through a tough time: You just got laid off, or you were diagnosed with a chronic illness. Instead of dwelling on how unfortunate these hurdles are, consider them opportunities for growth and learning. Think to yourself: What would Harry do? Reframe the challenges you encounter as a chance to develop resilience and perseverance, and to be the hero of your own story.

When you need a boost, map out where you are on your journey

Once you find a narrative hero you can relate to, keep their journey in mind as you face new challenges. “If you feel stuck or lost, you can look to that story and be like, ‘Which part do I feel like I’m in right now?’” Ursa says. Maybe you’re in the midst of a test that feels so awful that you’ve lost perspective on its overall importance—i.e., the fact that it’s only part of your journey. (See: When Katniss was upset about the costume that Snow forced her to wear—before she then had to go fight off a pack of ferocious wolves to save her life.) Referencing a familiar story “can help you have that eagle-eye view of what might be next for you, or what you should be paying attention to,” Ursa says. “Stories become this map that we can always turn to.” Think of them as reassurance that a new chapter almost certainly awaits.

Shame Disrupts the Family Building Process

Keeping shame at bay can help your fertility journey..

Posted September 13, 2024 | Reviewed by Kaja Perina

  • Fertility treatment, donor conception and treatment for secondary infertility can all be derailed by shame.
  • Recognizing shame in others can help you create helpful boundries.
  • Keeping internalized shame at bay can help your mood, relationships and fertility journey.
  • Seeing shame as a monster can help you catch it in yourself and others.

I’ve always believed that when it comes to managing your family-building journey, two things matter most:

  • Calming your nervous system .
  • Getting accurate information.

I list them in this order because, without a calm nervous system, it’s challenging to absorb information, make difficult choices (we may make choices that are easier but not necessarily better), stay in treatment, and have good relationships with our loved ones.

One of the most challenging emotions many people face is shame . Here are some examples:

Fertility Treatment

Shame can sneak in when you feel you're not on par with friends who have had children while you’re still trying. It can make you believe you’re “too old” to start a family or that there’s something inherently “wrong” with you because treatment isn’t working.

Secondary Infertility

Some people are content with one child or choose to live child-free, but others dream of having more children. Those experiencing secondary infertility often hear they “should” be happy with the family they have. While they usually are, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t want more.

Donor Conception

For some, having a genetic connection to their child is essential. For others, becoming a parent matters more. Yet, donor conception is often frowned upon in various circles and within families. Parents-to-be may fear they won’t bond as closely with a child who isn’t genetically theirs. However, after working with thousands of donors and recipients, I’ve never seen this fear come true. Parents often gravitate towards the child whose personality meshes with theirs, regardless of genetics . The athlete parent may connect with the athletic child, or the rigid parent may bond with the flexible one. Ideally, parents will try to treat their children as equally as possible, but because of temperamental differences, it may be easier with some than others. Genetics don’t seem to play a significant role here, though it can be hard to imagine before having your child.

Despite decades of advancements in fertility treatments and their increasing presence in public discourse and in political arenas, the stigma and shame surrounding family building through assisted reproductive technology persists.

We must recognize shame for what it is and understand how it can trip us up, influence our decisions, and make us feel terrible about ourselves. One way to combat it is by seeing it as a monster within us and others, and then make a conscious effort to stay away from it. When you notice it in others, change the subject, find an excuse to end the conversation, or limit discussions about that topic with people whose shame monster attacks you. The same goes for the monster inside you. When it surfaces, ask yourself if the shame is helpful, or just the monster trying to drag you down. The shame monster doesn’t mean to be hurtful—it just doesn’t know any other way.

It may feel like dealing with shame is yet another overwhelming task on your family-building journey. But shame is toxic and can be incredibly destructive. By keeping that shame monster at bay, you can not only make better decisions in your journey but also improve your chances of staying in treatment, all while building boundaries that will serve you well for years to come.

Grace Caskie’s Journey to Quantitative Psychology and Older Adults

A first-generation college student, the associate professor of counseling's education helped change her career path.

Like many of the most interesting journeys, Grace Caskie’s professional path was not straightforward.

A first-generation college student, Caskie had strong math skills and initially thought she would become a high school math teacher. “As is pretty typical with first-gen students, I think, I really didn’t know all of the possible majors that were out there,” Caskie, associate professor of counseling psychology, says. However, a psychology course early on introduced Caskie to the world of quantitative psychology. This discovery brought together her math skills and newfound interest in psychology.

Al Forsyth, then a faculty member at Millersville University, was an early mentor who encouraged Caskie to change her major to psychology.

“Even after I became a psychology major, I kept taking statistics classes in the math department,” Caskie says. “Then in my senior year, Al said, ‘I think it would be really good for you to go to graduate school.’” With that encouragement, another door opened. Caskie chose the quantitative psychology doctoral program at the University of North Carolina, under the mentorship of Abigail Panter, and the program proved to be a good match to her interests.

After teaching statistics to undergraduate psychology students at UNC several times, Caskie worked at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center during the last two years of her graduate program, conducting statistical analyses and data management under the mentorship of Margaret Burchinal.

“My master's thesis and my dissertation were methodologically oriented and focused on children and adolescents,” she says.

As Caskie finished up her dissertation, her advisor suggested that she apply for a postdoctoral position to work on research projects housed within Penn State’s Gerontology Center. Her work with the Gerontology Center expanded Caskie’s research interests to include older adults. Caskie ended up spending six years at Penn State.

“I often joke that I got a second Ph.D. in that six-year period,” she says. “I attended weekly colloquia, lab meetings, and did a lot of reading and research.”

At the Gerontology Center, Caskie also met another important mentor—K. Warner Schaie. A world-renowned gerontology researcher, Schaie, who died in 2023, was director of the Center and led the Seattle Longitudinal Study (SLS) along with his wife, Sherry L. Willis. The mentorship provided by Schaie and Willis informed Caskie’s own research focusing on older adults once she accepted a faculty position with Lehigh’s College of Education (COE).

When Caskie started with the COE, a large part of her job was supporting other faculty and students as a methodologist. Over time, the College hired additional faculty with strong backgrounds in statistics, including Joan Fu who took over that role full time. This allowed Caskie to spend more time on her own research, although her teaching responsibilities remained statistics courses offered to students across the COE’s programs.

“Our students are incredibly bright and hardworking,” she says. “My courses are challenging, but I also try to provide lots of support along the way.”

Caskie knows that students have often had bad experiences with math classes or statistics in the past. And most COE students are coming to the COE to become principals, teachers, and counselors, not statisticians. However, Caskie helps her students see how proper use and deep understanding of statistical analyses can improve their professional practice—whatever that practice is.

Lauren Tillstrom Biegley, a Ph.D. student in Teaching Learning and Technology, regularly applies what she learned in Caskie’s introductory statistics class to her research.

“I saved the binder from Grace’s class, and I go back through it to run my stats analyses,” she says. “However, I most appreciate the passion and genuine excitement Grace has for statistics and teaching it to others.”

That enthusiasm is evident when discussing statistics with Caskie—even casually.

“I think everybody wants to learn to use the methodologies properly so that they can correctly interpret the literature that they're reading,” Caskie says. “I try to give students many opportunities to think about how these techniques can be applied to their own field.”

As for Caskie’s area of research, gerontology is a field that is growing. She shares that, by 2035, older adults (65+ years) will outnumber children (18 years and under) for the first time in U.S. history (U.S. Census Bureau, 2018). And, understanding how to support well-being and promote quality of life for this growing segment of our population has both societal and economic implications (Levy et al., 2020).

“In my research, I've been mostly studying how health and cognition are linked,” says Caskie. “Most recently, I’m examining how health and cognitive status influence trainees’—in particular counseling psychology and clinical psychology trainees’—perceptions of their work with older adult clients.”

Although baby boomers represent a significant growth in the number of older adults in the United States, Caskie says very few (less than 2 percent) of psychologists specialize in this population. Her research approaches the mismatch in two ways. “One is looking at what might motivate more interest in working with older populations,” she says. “The other is determining how health and cognitive status impact perceptions of older adults—not just by psychologist trainees, but by the general public.”

Recently, Caskie’s career came full circle at the 2024 American Psychological Association (APA) conference in Seattle. She chaired a symposium at the conference titled, Impact of K. Warner Schaie's Work on the Fields of Adult Development, Aging, and Lifespan Psychology.

“I put this symposium together for APA because Schaie had started the Seattle Longitudinal Study in 1956, and APA was held in Seattle this year,” Caskie says. “The timing seemed perfect to honor his memory.”

She also led the completion of fundraising as APA Division 20 president for the recently renamed K. Warner Memorial Fund for Adult Development and Aging.

“One of my presidential initiatives prioritized mentorship and funding for students and early career professionals,” she says. “As part of those efforts, we raised $100,000 to fully fund the memorial.”
