Vintage Spartan Trailer Specifications, Weights and Dimensions

Spartan travel trailers were manufactured from 1945 to 1962 by the Spartan Aircraft Company. Owned by one of the richest men in America at the time, J. Paul Getty spared no expense in the creation of these high quality travel trailers.  They were built with the same techniques used in the manufacturing of their airplanes. The result was some of the highest quality travel trailers available, and their price reflected that.

Just bought a Spartan, not sure of the age????? Royal Mansion Vin # 35 14 382 Approx. 35 ft full length with hitch. Can someone help me with the date manufactured?

Got it figured out. Was missing a number in the vin#. It is a 33 ft 1951 Thanks Asa

Hi I’m going to buy a 1951 33ft. Spartan Royal Mansion, serial#: 33-51-A4272 but I am unable to locate any floor plan inforamtion for this serial#. does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance! Stephanie

There are Spartan trailers being advertised on the internet as manufactured in the 80s. Does anyone know if there is any relationship between these and the original Spartans? Regardless, I would like to know which company manufactured the later “Spartan” trailers, given that the original company closed and the name was sold to the aviation college.

I don’t know anything about 1980s Spartans, but they wouldn’t have any relationship to the post-war-1962 Spartans.

The Spartan name wasn’t sold to the Spartan School of Aeronautics (as it was called during the time Spartan built trailers); Spartan’s aircraft businesses pre-date Spartan trailer manufacturing. Spartan started out building airplanes and built many during WW2. After the war, demand for airplanes plumeted, so Spartan started building trailers to take advantage of the aluminium and other aircraft building materials they still had in stock, and the skills of their current employees. Spartan trailers were built in the same hangars that they had built airplanes. That Spartan trailers were built using WW2 era aircraft materials and techniques wasn’t a coincidence.

I own a Royal Spartanette Camper i bought back in 2006 and I didn’t get any paperwork with it , how can I get paperwork for it ? Serial number 135-51

Where is the serial number on a trailer. We didn’t get any paper work so need to buy a license

I just bought some property tha has a 1961 spartan sparcraft statesman on it it is 50’and is in very good shape for its age and could be liveable with a good cleaning,i dont need or want the trailer it has axles on it and is sitting on gravel on blocks, what are these things going for about the inside and out is original and in shape

Bobby where are you located? I will buy it.

I need a wiring diagram for a 1951 Spartanette Tandem

Bobby, I’d be interested in buying as well.512.914.0183

Rare Double Ender: 1954 Spartan Royal Mansion

1954 spartan travel trailer

We’ve featured a few of these incredible Spartan campers over the years, this 1959 Imperial Mansion was one of our most viewed articles of 2020. After looking at one in person, I understand why people are willing to spend big bucks on one, they are awesome! These larger campers came with all kinds of unique features. This one is especially impressive, as it’s a rare Double Ender Royal Mansion (more on that in a moment). You’ll want to take a closer look at this Spartan and be sure to bid if you’d love to have it. You can find it here on eBay in Oakland, California with a current bid of $15k.

1954 spartan travel trailer

Royal Mansions in nice usable condition are hard to come by no matter what features they came with, finding a double-ender in this nice of shape is downright incredible. Most Royal Mansions featured large windows just in the front of the camper, where the living room is situated. Double enders feature those same large windows in the front and in the back, where the bedroom is. This means you can enjoy those great mountain views from just about anywhere in the camper!

1954 spartan travel trailer

What’s really impressive with this camper is its condition. It still features its original kitchen appliances, which are all said to work correctly. All of the woodwork looks to be in great shape, but the seller admits the floor has been replaced and the shower tiled. There are also some dents on the outside of the camper, but the seller claims they can be popped out. Even with the dents, it would be hard to find another in better overall shape.

1954 spartan travel trailer

After owning this Spartan for a number of years, the seller decided to part with it after buying property on the top of a mountain and the road is too twisty and tight to get this 37-foot long camper to it. They claim it was a popular Airbnb rental during their ownership, so this might turn out to be a great investment if you aren’t planning on living in it full time. So, will you be living the Royal life in this Spartan?

If they can’t get it to their property I probably can’t get it to mine. When I measured I fugured I could get a 26′ Overlander up there but that was about it. And its too bad too, this mansion is just outstanding! Max Fenig would be jealous!

1954 spartan travel trailer

I tried to explain to this seller, but this is not the “rare” model he claims it is, and that hundreds of Spartans with double observation-lounge windows were produced during the years 1953-1955. The Spartan story is a fantastic tale of American WWII and postwar manufacturing and I have spent the last 22 years collecting things pertaining to their trailer manufacturing. -Andrew Smith [email protected]

Uh, where are these ” hundreds of Spartans with double observation-lounge windows” now?

I have seen a few and the really hold up well. Tribute to bygone craftsmen that took pride in their work and products! I can visualize this behind that Clipper you offerred a few days ago pulling onto a spot at a campground and having everyone there coming over for a tour and a tale!

Can you “Double Your Pleasure” in this???

I’d totally live in this. Put it inside a modest, but decent sized steel building that would also hold 5 cars or so, on a few acres.

My dad had one of these. Fond memories.

Not a “camper”.

Bill McCoskey

You are right, most campgrounds east of the ‘ol Miss river can’t handle something this big. In most states they are so heavy that legally it takes a 5 ton or larger truck, just to tow one. These were designed to be set up on a fairly permanent basis, not towed from campsite to campsite. The plumbing did not include holding tanks or fresh water tanks, expecting the trailer to be hooked up to an incoming water line and outgoing sewer line.

1954 spartan travel trailer

I have a smaller Spartan, it is considered a park model because it does not have holding tanks, so I think Bunky is correct

I believe Bunky and I were referring to the larger Spartan Mansion versions, not the smaller Park ones.

1954 spartan travel trailer

Can I get some info on the contractor who did the entrance patio? I need to get some work done. Thanks!

Vintage RV: 1955 Spartan Mansion — “The Cadillac of Travel Trailers”

Spartan produced over 40,000 trailer homes before ending production in 1961..

A Spartan Mansion trailer.

When I tripped across this vintage trailer for sale in Montana, I didn’t anticipate it having such an interesting and storied past. A spinoff of the famed Spartan Aircraft Company which counted the likes of Howard Hughes and King Ghazi as customers – and was owned by business tycoon J. Paul Getty -- this trailer line comes from quite high-brow pedigree. Evidently, remnants of the company still exist in the insurance and financial fields.

This particular model has been ravished by weather and time, but it's ready for an ambitious renovation. It’s a 1955 Spartan Mansion Trailer, with new tires, bearings are good and will need work (a bit of an understatement) but has good bones – or so stated the sale flyer posted on the windows. All for $4,500.

According to a Wikipedia post: The Spartan Aircraft Company was an American aircraft  manufacturing company, headquartered on Sheridan Avenue near the Tulsa Municipal Airport in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The company was known for the luxurious Spartan Executive aircraft produced in the late 1930s and early 1940s — made prominent by owners such as Howard Hughes and King Ghazi of Iraq. After the ebb of personal aviation and the increased competition in the aircraft business following World War II, owner J. Paul Getty and Spartan upper-management redirected production to focus on the demand for housing and leisure. Using the same internally braced and space-saving monocoque design of the Spartan Executive 7W, the company produced its first all-metal travel trailer. The company followed previous design strategies, offering lavish and full-featured trailers. Through the 1940s and 1950s, Spartan produced what some referred to as the "Cadillac" of trailers, commanding prices higher than $4000. At the time, with an average two-bedroom home in the United States costing about $8000, Spartan trailers were a discretionary purchase for the wealthy.

Spartan produced over 40,000 trailer homes before ending production in 1961. After 33 years of manufacturing aircraft and trailers, the Spartan Aircraft Company closed its manufacturing facilities and entered the insurance and financial  business under the name Minnehoma Insurance Co. The Spartan name was sold to the Spartan School of Aeronautics, which operates today under the name Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology.

Mobile Home Living

1954 Spartan Meets Modern Day Living

Spartans are magnificent mobile homes. Their American-made quality is undeniable as is their timeless beauty. Once you get your hands on one of these classic homes, you never want to let it go.

So what do you do when you are rich beyond desire and want your 40 foot, 1954 Spartan Imperial Mansion beside the Nueces River in Uvalde, Texas, a well-known flood prone area?

A Vision Come to Life

First, you hire architect Andrew Hinmann. Next, you sit back and wait for all the awesome to come together.  And it came together in an unusual, unconventional fashion and I love unusual and unconventional!

1954 spartan-spartan retrofit 2

While gazing from a distance you can’t tell that the heart of this structure sits a gorgeous Spartan mobile home. Walking toward it, however, you realize that this is far more than a fancy home sitting beside a river.

1954 spartan-spartan retrofit 3

1954 Spartan Given New Life

1954 spartan-spartan retrofit 11

The architect comments that the structure surrounding the trailer is a “Swiss Army knife. The whole project is an accessory to the trailer.” I can agree with that statement. It certainly solved the problem the owner had, there will be no flooding issues in the near future. It encapsulates the home without covering up its beauty and it allows the Spartan to shine in the Texas sun.

On Houzz , where I originally found this home, some readers commented that it was a waste of money and that it takes the mobility out of the mobile home but I think that’s a bit harsh and essentially untrue. The owners apparently appreciated the Spartan and wanted to enjoy its remarkable beauty and vintage qualities but they also wanted to be comfortable.

Just because a mobile home has wheels doesn’t mean it has to be moved around to be appreciated. In fact, a 40 foot long mobile home is not necessarily made to be moved from place to place or campground to campground. The Spartan corporation made smaller homes for that purpose. ‘Mobile homes’ that are longer than 28 feet were made to go to one place and be set up and lived in which is exactly what the owners did. Remember, 98% of all mobile homes are never moved once placed. Campers are made to be pulled, not mobile homes.

As always, thank you for reading Mobile Home Living!

Best of luck! PS I’d love to see your Spartans!

I have two – a 55 and a 58. Spartans are magnificent! They are perfect for where I live because mice and pack rats can’t get in. The 55 needs nothing and is in almost perfect condition. I use it as a guest house. The 58 needs some work, but is in good condition. I’m fixing it up to be lived in. Does anyone know where I can get parts? I need a new front door for the 58. Thanks. I had no idea Spartans were appreciated by so many.

Fantastic idea. Beautifully executed. The Spartan is elegant inside and out.

I use to own a 1954 Spartan Royal Mansion, which was right about 48 feet in length. Loved it until I realized it was too small to raise a family in. But I also have to agree, at the length it was, you did not want to be haling it from place to place. As the thing was what is known as a park model. And it was beautiful, all original with blond birch wood in it from 1954. Unfortunately it had been moved so much over the years, that it had a few problems especially with the evaporate cooler on top of the roof which eat holes in the roof from all the moving they did with it up there. Which is unfortunate, as some people do not really know how to care for old trailers like these, or simply will not take care of old trailers like these.

But I do still agree, you do not move those big boys around like you do a 28 foot travel trailer. As these things are one two heavy, and two not designed for that kind of use so it would simply be impractical to use them that way. You would not move a 50 foot manufactured home around like that, and this is essentially the same thing just on a narrower scale. as they are only 8 foot wide, instead of being 14 foot wide or 16 foot wide.

Ellie, I’m a few minutes away from buying a Spartan Mansion to live in also, here in Florida but I’m worried that I won’t be allowed to…. I need to call zoning and ask in the morning I suppose. Do you think I can just buy a lot with an old mobile home on it and get rid of the old mobile and replace it with the 41 foot Spartan? Have you had any problems with Florida doing this? I don’t know where to begin. My email is [email protected] please get in touch with me, I’m freaking out a bit. I’m looking for a place to live in the Ocala area… I have three dogs so I don’t want to live in a retirement type community.

Mary, it took a lot of money to do this. Of course, there’s no mention if they purchased the Spartan in that pristine condition or if they had to restore it themselves. Spartan restorations are a huge business and it’s not cheap at all.

The framing of Spartans are metal, not wood like most other mobile homes, so they aren’t susceptible to rot. However, there is wood within and wrapping the interior and that is susceptible. The outer shell of the home is riveted, not nailed or screwed so it does stand up well to mother nature. Leaks mostly occur around windows, doors and fans. It’s not hard to find a Spartan that is in good condition but most will require work to get it up to par.

The containment that they built here was probably a bit more than I can conceptualize. If I had to guess, I’d say in the 250-500,000 area, including the Spartan and whatever land modifications were needed as well as the water, sewage and electricity systems that were needed (it being on a huge plot of land I suspect the owners ran into issues trying to set up their own systems, the rain catchment was probably the easiest to create). There was an architectural firm involved so you know the total build cost a pretty penny..lol

Thanks for commenting! Hope you the best!

Hi Mary! I definitely want to read that novel when you are finished so please contact me. I’m a huge Spartan fan!

When I think of a high-end restoration of a Spartan, it’s all about getting the Spartan back to showroom appearance.

If you go to some of the Spartan restoration sites, and I’m sure you have, the big money is spent in restoring walls, flooring, siding, widows, etc and then finding or having the original fixtures special made to look exactly like it did at the dealership the day it was bought. If original isn’t available, a similar look is acceptable. The ‘original’ pieces is where the money is spent.

Spartan lovers, like myself, don’t like to see a Spartan that has been modified too much. Our stomachs have been known to turn as soon as we see a Spartan exterior that has been painted or if the gorgeous interior wood has been painted or altered in any way (oh, just the thought of it made my stomach turn..lol), we want everything as original as possible.

The appeal of Spartans is the connection to the past, when life was simpler and mobile homes were luxury items and not stereotyped as they are today. The appeal also lies in the fact that they were American made at a very special time in our history. The factory used what materials were available due to war (aluminum) and ended up transforming the entire travel trailer and mobile home industry. 60 years later and these home are still housing people and standing the test of time. There’s just so many things about Spartans that are admirable!

This retro-fit is about the best I’ve seen. They kept the home original and allowed it to be the center of attention, as they should be. Then they added the modern tech around it without altering or scarring the Spartan. It sounds like your idea/concept is very similar. Please, just don’t hurt the Spartan!

PS: If a ‘dead’ Spartan is revived we will appreciate it and be thankful that someone took the time and spent the money to bring it back to life even if it isn’t original. We will not judge those people in any way. ;)

Hope that helps!

PS to original comment — my idea would be similar to this on your site “Sitting 30 feet above the river and 5 feet above the flood plain on concrete piers anchored 25 feet into the ground, this Spartan is safe from any flooding disasters or wind, or probably even a tornado. It’s wrapped and bundled with 45 feet steel beams and ipe wood. Additional features include a redwood hot tub that the owner re-salvaged and rain water catchment systems. ” Just a bit more glitz — any ideas would be great, what does it take to do this, money, how long, how big is construction team…. [email protected]

Researching Spartan restorations — a large one — high end. I am working on a novel that will include a Spartan restoration set up under an elaborate water catchment shade roof and set up on a wooden or cement deck area to deter the snakes etc. Not as massive as yours but something that would be elaborate for land in Terlingua Tx. Can’t give story away, sorry ;) Please feel free to email me at [email protected] with any stories, examples of what you would include high end and why, and the restoration work in general. Thanks.

Mine, too Steven! They are classic in every sense!

I want this. Wow! Spartans are my fav.

Stunning. The exterior is a lovely setting for a beautiful gem. Absolutely swoon-worthy!

Amazing! I too, am a Spartan lover. this is genius!

WOW! I love Spartans and anyone who has 7 is a hero in my book..lol. I'm going to read your blog in the morning, word for word. Thanks for the link! I would love to get to interview you and learn more about your collection and your plans. FL does present some serious building issues for any construction, I'm sure it will be a wonderful structure that highlights the beauty of the Spartans…I Look forward to hearing from you again!

Thanks so much for letting me know. I fixed it. I never saw anything about the power or sewage. With it sitting on a such a large property I doubt they ran any lines for power. Perhaps a generator or solar system? I'd say sewage is a simple tank set up though. I googled the architect and went to the other links listed but there was nothing mentioned about either one. However, I did find some photos of the build which is pretty neat. Here's the link: and the architects link: http://andrewhinman.com/portfolio/02-locomotive-r …. Thanks again!

Very very lovely. I am in love with Spartans and wish I could afford one if I even found one. Great job! Love the structure around the trailer, it looks amazing and nice little swimming hole also to complete the home.

Great design. What are they doing for sewage and power?

Houzz link is bad htt phttp://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/13443165/list/Houzz-Tour–A-Most-Unusual-Trailer-in-Texas:// Should be http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/13443165/list/Houz …

Great article, like your outlook on it!

I own a collection of 7 Spartan Manors and Mansions, and will use 2-3 of them for a similar housing system in Florida. Mine will have the wheels and axles on them, but only for maintenance and protection from hurricanes. This was a great architectural insight on how to use these, not what I’m exactly doing, but in Florida we have different needs. We’ll put some in Portugal near the sea as well, where building permits aren’t easy on seafront land. Congratulations on a fantastic piece of work!

I think it is FABULOUS! Nothing lavish or pretentous – it's sleek and zen like with an appreciation of mid century modern asthetic! LOVE IT!

Love it, but that must have been an expensive venture!

Holy Cow! That is fantastic! I think it should get some kind of award for amazing ideas. Thanks SO much for finding this one!!! :)

Spartan Aircraft Company

Tulsa, Oklahoma

1954 spartan travel trailer

The Spartan Aircraft Company was founded in 1928 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The history of Spartan has its roots in oil .Two years before Oklahoma gained statehood in 1905, an oil gusher named the No.1 Ida Glenn sprung up southeast of Tulsa. This gusher turned out to be a giant oil reserve big enough to establish future companies such as Getty, Gulf, Standard Oil, (now Exxon), Sinclair and Skelly. The teens and twenties were a time of great opportunities. America was moving into the “modern” era. There were many new technologies being introduced and perfected: the automobile, electricity, and airplane flight were among a few. Oil and the internal combustion engine played a major role in these technologies. Oil companies had a great interest in these new products. William G Skelly founder of the Skelly Oil Company came to be known as “Mr. Tulsa”. In the 1920’s he turned his business into one of the world’s largest independent oil companies. He was one of the wealthiest men in the country and was very aware of the “modern” America and its new technologies. Skelly had a great interest in aeronautics. The Skelly Oil Company sponsored both The Air Adventures of Jimmie Allen and Captain Midnight. Both Series based around aviation. Skelly’s wealth allowed him to pursue this interest by his founding of the Spartan Aircraft Company which was started as an aeronautical college and airplane manufacturer In the late 1930’s Spartan was acquired by the Getty Corporation owned by the famous billionaire and oil tycoon J. Paul Getty. At the end of the W.W.II the Spartan factory was beefed up due to wartime production. Getty had to decide where he was going to take the company next. A product he could market to a large audience was needed. His engineers were busy with several exciting projects. A 5-passenger airplane prototype was completed and flown. Whose performance surpassed expectations and would be the best plane the company had ever built. In addition to this new plane they were also working on a new type automobile and a radically designed travel trailer. Due to the war the competition in airplane manufacturing had risen greatly. Top management figured the cost in dollars and length of time before their new plane design could be in production and producing supply for inventory would be to great an expense. As far as automobile manufacturing went the cost of retooling would be out of the question and this was too much of a departure from what they knew best. With the great need for housing after the war Getty determined that trailer manufacturing would be the way to go. The first prototype was made in the summer of 1945 using aircraft design similar to the Spartan Executive without much concern for other trailers trailer design of the time. They were out to produce the best product on the market. Using building techniques and designs that they had mastered in the aircraft building industry. By mid 1945 the pilot model had been completely road tested and a small production run of 100 was scheduled. G.R. Schutes, a designer of national reputation, had been hired to give the trailers a modern look incorporating many deco design elements. True to their intent, Spartan spared no expense on their trailers. They were of the highest quality and sleekest design employing the monocoque building technique used in airplane manufacturing. They were truly the “Cadillac” of trailers. When we compare the price of a brand new home in Levittown for under $8000 including the land the 25 foot Spartan Manor at close to $4000 was rather expensive. The first models rolling off the production line in the mid 40’s to early 50’s could be considered true travel trailers in every since with the largest reaching around 35 feet long. As the interstate highway system began to come into existence things would change. The company started making much larger trailers, or homes as Spartan preferred to call them. They were furnished in the latest of styles from couches to window coverings. The 50’s saw a great rise in the number of competing trailer manufacturing companies. Most offering models priced much below that of Spartan. In 1958, to stay competitive, Spartan introduced 2 new lines of trailers. The “Sparcraft” an all aluminum and riveted trailer constructed with less appealing styling than the Spartan ie: no compound curves lower grade aluminum and more conservative interiors of lessor quality. Their super economy line the “Sparlane” was a basic boxy affordable mobile home. 1959 marked the final year of production. At this time Spartan had a very extensive line of trailers with 19 models. The largest reaching 10 feet wide by 50 feet long. A fleet of 29 2-ton Internationals was used to deliver these large homes. Among this line up Spartan introduced the “Crescendo” and the “Carousel” two trailers with ultra modern 50’s styling and never before seen curving floorplans. Sadly this would be the last of the Spartans produced. In 1961 the plant closed and the company went into the insurance and financial business, under the name of the Minnehoma Insurance Co., After closing its plant, Spartan sold its name to the Spartan School of Aeronautics, which continues today. (www.spartantrailer.com) Aircraft Quality, Nifty Interiors The enterprising J.P. Getty saw a need, in the post-World War II era, for affordable yet high-quality housing. The Spartan Trailer, utilized for either recreation or primary living space depending upon the model and the needs of the owner, helped to fill this niche. Getty’s familiarity with manufacturing materials and laudable success running the Spartan factory’s war-effort fabrication of entire craft such as the Navy NP-1 trainer or components for B-24 bombers gave him ability and inspiration for creating these trailers. He knew of the durability of aircraft-grade aluminum and other materials, and insisted upon their use in the construction of the Spartan Trailer.

One of the, If not the Most expensive trailer on the market at that time. This travel trailer is in very good condition. What is the price of it?

Product Description

#0609055712020  (SOLD B.H.)

The exterior of this vintage Spartan is very complete, very original and pretty darn straight. It has all the original doors windows and vents. It is built like an airplane with riveted construction for long life and durability. It has aircraft grade aluminum that can be polished up to a mirror like shine.

Frame and A-frame. Frame has some surface rust but everything appears to be good and solid in all areas accessible for inspection.

Dents, scratches and damage. There are some shallow scratches between the entry doors and some dents and dings on the bottom wrap at the rear of the trailer. Overall the exterior is very nice and straight.

Entry door front. Has the original aluminum entry door with the cool porthole style window. Has the original Bargman brand lock which is in working condition but we have no keys. Keys can be made by a good locksmith. Exterior of door has some dents and scratches and several screw holes. It still has most of the vinyl interior door cover which is in poor shape but would work good for a pattern. Has new stainless steel catch to hold door in open position. Entry door rear. Has the original aluminum entry door with the porthole style window. Has the original Bargman lock but it is missing the cylinder. I believe new cylinders and keys are available on our parts e-store. The exterior skin is in good condition with only some very minor dings at the top. It also still has the original interior vinyl door cover which would work great for a pattern. Has new stainless steel catch to hold door in open position.

Screen doors. There are no screen doors on the trailer now but the screen door for the front door is inside the trailer but it is in poor condition. The rear screen door is missing. We offer new oak screen doors on our website.

Entry step front. Step is missing on front door but is inside the trailer closet. The step and bracket have some surface rust and metal which is bent up and need straightened. Entry step rear. Rear step is there and in working condition but it also does have some surface rust.

Front hoist. Has the original front hoist but it has been cut off on the bottom and needs to be replaced.

Hitch coupler. Has the original hitch coupler which is in working condition.

Roof and Vents. Has the original aluminum roof with riveted construction. This trailer has a cambered roof which is much better and stronger than a flat roof. It sheds water better and can hold up to heavier snow loads in winter climates. Roof is dirty but does not appear to have any damage. Roof vents will need new operators which we do carry on our parts e-store.

Exterior lights. Has all four of the original style teardrop marker lights with good plastic lenses. Has the original Bargman Trail-Lite #2 tail lights with glass lenses and stainless steel bezels. Glass lenses appear to be in good shape. Has the original Bargman Trail-Lite #4 license light and bracket. Both the clear lens and the red lens appear to be in good condition. All original lights are un-tested but temporary tow lights have been added in the rear so the trailer can be towed home safely.

Underbelly. Has the original aluminum underbelly which is in pretty good shape. It does have some small corrosion holes at the rear of the trailer.

Windows. Has the original curved plexiglass windows in the front which are in good condition but do you have some scuffing and scratching from age but no cracks. Has the original radius cornered aluminum windows which all open up. All these windows are complete with all hardware and all have screens except one. All windows have old seals which should be replaced. We do have the seals available on our website.

The interior of this trailer is in very nice condition. It is very original and very complete and it also has an awesome floor plan which has two bedrooms. One in the very front and one in the very rear, with the living room and kitchen and bathroom in between.

Cabinet and closet doors. Has the original birch cabinets and closet doors which are in good shape. One cabinet door has a small piece of veneer that is chipped off the bottom corner. Catches. Original and in working condition.

Countertops. Kitchen has the original countertops with matching backsplash. It has the gray basket weave pattern and countertops are in very good condition. Bathroom has same gray basket weave pattern countertops which are also in good condition.

Floor. The floor is solid in all areas. There are some areas where new plywood was installed.

Floor covering. Has the original 9 inch floor tiles throughout the trailer some areas are in good shape and some are in poor shape. Table. Yes. Has a vintage table with four matching chairs. Plywood under Formica top of table is starting to delaminate.

Unit sleeps. There is room for up to six persons to sleep in this trailer.

Walls. Has the natural birch paneling on both the walls and the ceiling. The paneling is in good condition overall. There are some panels where the finish is starting to flake off.  The ceiling panel above the furnace is water stained around the flue and is delaminating and probably should be changed.

RUNNING GEAR

Has the original running gear with the exception of brand new tires and wheels. The wheel bearings were inspected and repacked. We pulled this trailer over 600 miles with no problems.

Axles and springs. Has the original axles and springs. These have surface rust but everything appears to be good.

Dry weight. 8110#

Hitch ball height. Approximately 20 inches.

Safety chains. No.

Hitch weight. Approximately 1000 pounds.

Hitch ball size. 2 5/16”.

Hubcaps. No.

Couch/gaucho. Yes, it has a period correct couch with a bed that folds out from it.

Curtains. No.

Has the original electrical system which has a Magnetrip box with four automatic reset circuit breakers. Spartan is a high-quality trailer which used all copper wiring. All 110 V lights and electrical outlets are in working condition. Entire electrical system and appliances should be check by a certified expert before use.

110 V lights. Yes. Has all of the original light shades and fixtures which are in working condition.

12 V lights. No.

Breakaway switch. Yes. Has a brand new Tekonsha brand breakaway kit with battery.

Converter. No.

Porch light. Yes. Has the original bell type porch light which is in working condition.

RV battery. No.

Has the original copper LP line coming to the front of the trailer but rest of LP system is missing or in the trailer loose. Most of these LP items should be replaced for safety reasons anyway. Entire LP system and appliances should be checked by a certified expert before use.

Automatic changeover. No.

Furnace. Yes. Has the original Coleman brand heater which is fuel oil and untested.

Gas bottles. No.

Gas lights. No.

Gas regulator. Yes, regulator and LP pigtails with copper lines are in closet of trailer.

Range oven. Yes has the original 20 inch Dixie brand LP gas stove. This is the deluxe model that has the window to look into the oven. Stove is complete with all grates, burners, wire shelves and knobs. The pilots, top burners and oven burners all do light.

Refrigerator. Yes, has the original Frigidaire brand refrigerator made by General Motors. Refrigerator is complete with all shelves and dehydrator box. It even has one of the original aluminum ice cube trays. Refrigerator does cool but is a little noisy.

Water heater. Yes, Has the original Payne brand Electric water heater which is 6 gallons. Un-tested.

Has the original plumbing with copper freshwater lines and copper and brass drains I did a visual inspection and did not see any cracked water lines so we pressurized the water lines with air. It would not hold pressure so I’m guessing that there is a cracked or disconnected water line so it will need some plumbing work done.

Air pump. No.

Freshwater tank. No.

Waste holding tank. No.

Renovation Diary

New pictures coming soon, glass will be replaced next week Yeah! Cost about $30 per window. Used Kool Seal and nylon mesh tape on some leaking seams; Also used some silver Butyl Rubber caulk wiped into the joints in the aluminum molding on the upper and lower sides. This stopped more leaks than the roof work! I am sure the vintage airstream people have a better caulking material to use.

Started replacing the front ceiling with 1/4" birch plywood. I also am replacing some insulation while I am up there Cleaned out the Oil Furnace (Coleman Model 700), but haven't tried to light it yet.

UPDATE : I lit the furnace outside of the trailer. It works well, but many people have emailed me about the dangers of the old furnance, so I am leaving it our of the trailer. It took up alot of space anyway.

1954 SPARTAN IMPERIAL MANSION, MOBILE HOME, SOLD

1954 spartan travel trailer

1955 SPARTAN IMPERIAL MANSION

This is not,   and was not a Travel Trailer,   rather the highest quality mobile home of the 1950’s.

The trailer is superb,   very nice shape.   The trailer has been used as a guest house most recently.     The trailer has a large galley kitchen with updated tile, counter top, sink and tile,   refurbished original gas stove.   A new fridge that runs or propane/gas and a Mini Split Mitsubishi HVAC system.

The trailer has a full bathroom with large shower and really great tile,   rear bedroom and really nice Burl Wood paneling though-out.

Outside is clean and polished with no big dents or drags, and no known leaks.   The living room has awesome panoramic rap around glass.   There are no soft spots in the floors.   There is an entry door on both sides of the trailer.

I have personally towed this unit about 60 miles.   You will need a large F250 Diesel truck or larger to move it.     I hold a clear title to the unit.   This trailer can be moved to your lake property,   down to the coast and live in it,   or a weekend hide away.

Build a deck around it,   drop in a hot-tub and bam!!!!!     The trailer is currently stored in-doors near Retama Park in Selma Texas just outside San Antonio.       Thanks!     Its awesome!

Model Imperial Mansion

Posted Over 1 Month

I have this gorgeous girl for sale! One of the best I've ever seen in terms of overall shell condition. There are a few random small punctures that were present when I bought it, a couple small dents around the bottom and some of the glass needs to be replaced, but these shouldn't be a hurdle to anyone familiar with the repair forums out there. I used it as a retail storefront, and since the large stock window opposite the front door was shattered by the original owner, I cut it out and installed an ADA storefront/business door in its place. No studs were removed for this; the door is the same width as the original window, so the structural integrity has not been compromised. I gutted it from its original status, which was quite despicable on the interior. The original owner left it out in the woods behind his house for decades, so everything was rotten. I gutted it down to the shell and chassis and pressure washed the interior, then installed PT joists within the chassis to reinforce the new subfloor. It has top of the line Advantec subflooring, as well as a vapor barrier and foam sheathing insulation. All of my other improvements are strictly cosmetic and can easily be driven out with hex and spiderdrive bits. I only added new insulation and 1/4" paneling to the walls and ceiling, and I framed out a transaction counter and workdesk in the center and shelving over the wheelwells. I am happy to provide more pictures upon request. It also has ADA compliant Exit signs wired in, new parking lights on the exterior, complete code compliant commercial wiring with numerous outlets and light switches, as well as high-end commercial LED ceiling light fixtures. I also had new tires installed during the gutting, (Dec 2013) which only made 1 trip of approx 30 miles. Buyer will be responsible for greasing the bearings and axles, etc. although it was done with the tires. Be advised that Spartans are extremely rare, much more so than Airstream, and this was one of the largest models ever produced, which makes it that much rarer. This would be a great rebuild for the enthusiast or a turnkey operation for the retail vendor. I can include the mini fridge and portable standalone AC unit I used inside if needed. On Jan-10-17 at 19:06:41 PST, seller added the following information: UPDATE: Due to several emails about the interior and the glass needed, I've provided more pics. WINDOWS: The very rear folding window that is broken next to the door came to me in that condition, and I have not had time to fix it. I had it covered with tape and removed it for the shot. The handle condition is also as it was when I bought it, but replacement parts were available at the time through Vintage Trailer Supply. The middle door window was broken out last year by a vandal, as was the folding window with the blue tape in the corner. The windows to the right of the middle door are both plexiglass panels that I installed to replace the broken plexiglass panels that were there when I bought it, so if you are buying as an enthusiast who must have original fixtures, that's up to you. INTERIOR: As you can see the light fixtures are very nice and are LEDs that typically get installed in commercial office or retail space. The electrical panel is connected to city power, is brand new, and that's all I know about that for the gearheads. The surrounds on the desk and sales counter are made of the original underpinning, which was corroded to the point of scrapping but I recycled the best pieces. The tops are ambrosia maple. If you don't need the paneling, you can chuck it or recycle it, but I'm not putting any more work in it. All of the insulation in the walls is perfectly usable. It became too big of a project against my opening deadline back when I built the place, and then I never found the time to finish anything else inside. The moral of the story is that this is a super rare model that is 62 years old with perfect structural integrity, all of the horrible gutting done for you, and minor cosmetic repair. If you have not worked on one of these, you really need to understand how bad the condition can be when you get into them and be able to appreciate how this one has survived so well. DO NOT SEND lowball/ridiculous offers with bleeding heart stories about your grandmother needing a place to stay in your front yard. They will go unanswered. If there are any serious questions/offers, don't hesitate to ask. Thanks for looking.

Vintage 36' 1950 Spartan Imperial Mansion Travel Trailer

Yucca Valley, California

Vintage 36' 1950 Spartan Imperial Mansion Travel Trailer-Calif. This would be great to fix up for vintage trailer camping, an extra guest room or fantastic to live in. It has alot of potential. Look up oldtrailer.com/vintage-spartan-manor-trailer-pictures.html or oldtrailer.com and type in 1951 Spartan Trailer. So you can see what you can do with this trailer. I call this the long, long, pink trailer. But you can strip the paint off and polish it or re-paint it. Lot's and lot's of potential. The serial/model no. is: 36--50-85 According to the serial number. This is a 36' it is a 1950 model and it was the 85th one made that year. It is a Spartan imperial Mansion Towing ball is a 2". The jack works great. You will need to bring your own longer than 33' aux. lights. no towing lights on this baby at all. We just towed this more than 20 miles on bumpy dirt roads. But the tires do need to be replaced. I thin they could go a very short distance. They are holding air, but do have cracks in them. I will give you a Bill of Sale. No title. The body is in super good condition. I saw only 2 dents and you can seethem in the pictures. It is by the front door. And there is a trim piece missing above the tires on the front door side. Most of the windows are missing or broken. Both round door windows are there. And the 2 side windows in the back are there. No keys for the entry doors. It is missings vents and the other 2 are missing parts. The floor is solid. 760-364-4115

Here are 12 adventure-ready favorites that are listed for sale on Hemmings Marketplace .

1964 Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier

According to the seller, this 1964 Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier sports a rare one-of-50 dealer-installed camper package. It’s equipped with a roof rack, easy-access barn-style rear and side doors, a kitchenette, removable table, a configurable seating and sleeping area, plus plenty of storage and camping accessories. Get a closer look here .

1983 Mercedes-Benz Unimog

This 1983 Mercedes-Benz Unimog nicknamed “Project Everest,” is a fully rebuilt 1983 Mercedes Unimog U1700L with a multitude of upgrades, including a bespoke four-berth, torsion free mounted Arksen expedition body. Some of the best overlanding gear comes out of Australia, and this build is no different. Built by Arksen Overland, this high-end overlanding vehicle features an extended six-passenger cab and offers flexible living space for four adults or a family, with both a queen and a double bed and a five-seat dinette with 270-degree views. The luxurious 4x4 is stuffed full of creature comforts and modern technology, including solar power, a full kitchen, wet room with vanity, hot shower, air conditioning, and a Nature's Head composting toilet. Outside living is made easy with an integrated pull-out kitchen with BBQ grill, sink, storage, space for the hob, external power and a full-length awning. Check out everything that you can get for the (negotiable) asking price of $525,000.

1951 Spartan Royal Mansion

The 1951 Spartan Royal Mansion, originally launched in 1948, was an extravagant camper that soon became known as the Cadillac of the camper trailer industry. The seller writes; “This is potentially one of the best examples in existence. Meticulously restored inside and out, no detail was overlooked—right down to the embroidered pillowcases, original mid-century interior furnishings, and accompanying lawn furniture.”

According to the classified listing on Hemmings Marketplace , the luxury vintage camper sports many upgrades, such as “an Air-lift Gen IV suspension system with remote control, electro-magnetic brake drums on all four wheels, Goodyear tires on 15-inch steel wheels, three remote-control ceiling fan ventilators, microwave oven, and complete entertainment system with Bose sound, Blu-Ray DVD player, LED flat-screen TV, and an iPod dock.”

A top-of-the-line dual-axle 1951 Spartan Royal Mansion such as this example carried an original base price of more than $4,700 back in the day, equivalent to around $48,000 in today’s dollars. The seller is accepting offers now .

1987 Dodge Xplorer

Custom vans are famous for transporting roadies and van lifers to far away destinations in compact style. This three-owner 1987 Dodge Xplorer Ram Camper Van is described as “very, very clean inside and out,” is “rust free underneath,” and has only around 36,000 miles on the odometer. The seller states there are no mechanical issues to speak of. The interior features front swivel seats, foldable rear beds, a stove, fridge, and toilet. The van, which is equipped with like-new tires, is reportedly ready for its next adventure .

1977 Volkswagen LT28 Motorhome

This vintage 1977 Volkswagen LT28 motorhome would be perfect for someone familiar with vintage vehicle maintenance who doesn’t mind giving their off-road adventure rig a little TLC before its next long road trip.

The seller explains, “I originally purchased this RV to travel through Europe in, and although I love the RV, I unfortunately don't have the background or experience to maintain a vintage vehicle. It requires some maintenance and possibly some restoration due to its age, but it is a very rare Volkswagen and would be perfect for a vintage Volkswagen enthusiast.”

This Westfalia RV currently only runs on LP gas, but it is built to run on either LPG or regular unleaded fuel. Inside, the dinette converts into a bed in case the cabover sleeping area isn’t enough snoozing space. The kitchenette contains a gas-powered stove with two burners, and a new DC powered refrigerator/freezer combo was recently installed. A toilet and the original sink is kept in a separate room within the vintage motorhome. Exterior features include a manual awning and two solar panels that can be connected to a leisure battery with a Victron SmartSolar charge converter. Check out this rare vintage gem .

1954 Yellowstone 18-Foot Travel Trailer

This single-axle, 1954 Yellowstone 18-Foot Travel Trailer is described by its seller as “a rare example,” due to its porthole windows and polished aluminum exterior. According to the seller, the Yellowstone underwent a “total frame-up restoration” after being found in a field in Florida. Obviously finished to a very high standard, the trailer is owned by a longtime member of the Tin Can Tourists club of metal-finished trailer owners. All appliances were converted to electric operation for safety, including a new Frigidaire refrigerator, with the seller noting that the trailer has been “totally rewired” with new breakers. The seller states that the Yellowstone has always been covered, has “no rust,” and has reportedly won Best of Show in every competition it has entered.

1975 Volkswagen Westfalia

This tangerine dream 1975 Volkswagen Westfalia is lovingly named “Thelma.” The vintage VW, powered by its air-cooled engine and backed by a four-speed manual transmission, shows just over 14,000 on the odometer. Inside, it is upholstered in tweed plaid fabric and is fully equipped with a functioning sink, stove and fridge. Exterior updates include new tires and pop-up canvas, plus a new fuel pump, updated wiring and an oil change all done within the past six months.

The seller writes, “Rust does not exist in Thelma's world. She is a beautiful example of what these classics were made for and is ready to take you on your next adventure .”

1937 Pierce-Arrow Travelodge

This 1937 Pierce-Arrow Travelodge is reportedly one of under 30 examples known to exist according to the Pierce-Arrow Owner’s Club.

In response to changing markets and the company’s dire financial situation at the time, Pierce-Arrow released three camping trailers during the 1937 model year to capitalize on the growing market for recreational vehicles. This example, a 16.5ft “Model B,” was a step between the brand’s most expensive 19ft “Model A” and the entry-level 13.7ft “Model C.” Regardless of which models customers chose at the time, each vintage camper was built on a high-tech steel frame with aircraft aluminum outer shell and offered a generous amount of space, measuring 80-inches wide and offering 76.5-inches of interior headroom.

According to the seller, this 1937 Pierce-Arrow Travelodge Model B underwent a “complete nut and bolt (and splinter!) restoration in 2010 that was finished to an extraordinary standard.” Modern conveniences were added during the restoration, such as an electric braking system and seven-blade trailer electrical socket, a modern electrical panel that can handle original 6-volt, 12-volt and 110-volt electric supplies, plus a water pump system to aid water pressure from an external water supply. The fine details are where this restored vintage camper really shines. Get a closer look on the Hemmings Marketplace classified listing .

1961 Bedford Dormobile Camper

A 1961 Bedford Dormobile Camper such as this is sought after by classic van lovers and motorhome enthusiasts alike. According to the seller, this Bedford camper was extensively restored by a collector a few years ago. It features a unique tilting roof, signature left + right sliding doors, enough space for four to sleep, and functioning camping equipment. It is powered by a 1600cc 4-cylinder petrol engine paired with a manual gearbox. Imagine all the attention you’d receive by driving this classic camper on your next road trip.

1998 Land Rover Defender 110

Meet “Project Sahara,” a reimagined 1998 Defender 110 300TDI SW that underwent a full ground-up body-off restoration featuring extensive upgrades and modernizations.
