The  Woodward Dream Cruise  event is an automotive enthusiast event held annually on the third Saturday of August in Metropolitan Detroit, Michigan, along Woodward Avenue, a major thoroughfare built in the early 20th century. The WDC Event spans much of the avenue: drivers travel from the suburbs of Pontiac through Ferndale in Oakland County, Michigan, to the State Fair Grounds within the Detroit city limits, just south of 8 Mile Road.

Here's your dose of americana from this year's cruise.

The 2022 running of the Woodward Dream Cruise just went down, and we were there from morning to evening drinking in the sweet sights and pre-emissions exhaust fumes. Yes, it’s a little smelly on Woodward Ave. this time of year.

Just like always, the Dream Cruise invites all comers to cruise their machines on Woodward from Ferndale, MI to Pontiac , MI. Everybody is invited, but the original intent of the Dream Cruise was to highlight classic American muscle cars. You’ll see plenty of those in our mega gallery above, but we’ve sprinkled it with a bunch of other vehicle types, such as modern muscle and other intriguing American vehicles.

Similar to years past, though, sometimes the classics aren’t the most entertaining thing to look at on Woodward. That’s why we’ll have other mega galleries coming soon, highlighting the weird cars and (great) dogs of the Cruise, all the imports and exotics you can imagine and a special one for all the trucks of Woodward — perhaps even more so than in years past, the truck population on Dream Cruise day was quite high.

You won’t be alone, as it’s estimated that over 1 million people attend the Dream Cruise to either watch from the side of the road or to sit in the most glorious traffic jam in the world.

DETROIT – The 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise is Saturday, August 19. Here’s everything you need to know.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest one-day celebration of classic car culture that attracts over 1 million visitors, and more than 40,000 muscle cars, street rods, custom, collector and special interest vehicles.

The Woodward Dream Cruise takes place each year on the third Saturday in August, and runs between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

What is the Dream Cruise?

In August 1995, Nelson House and a group of volunteers looked to relive and recreate the nostalgic heydays of the 50s and 60s, when youth, music and Motor City steel roamed Woodward Avenue, America’s first highway.

That year, 250,000 people participated—nearly ten times the number expected. The rest, as they say, is history.

Where is the Dream Cruise route?

The Woodward Dream Cruise spans much of the avenue: classic vehicle drivers cruise through nine participating communities (Pontiac, Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, Royal Oak, Berkley, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge and Ferndale) in Oakland County, Michigan. Spectators and cruisers travel to Metro Detroit, the birthplace of the American automobile, to participate in an event that celebrates all things automotive.

How much does it cost?

There are no fees to cruise in the event or to watch. Anyone can participate although, those not driving a classic car are asked to stay out of the two right lanes nearest to the curb.

Where do folks park?

The Woodward Dream Cruise is a spectacular experience to drive, or, merely watch and marvel from the sidelines. Public parking is available along or near the cruise route.

Public safety info

The Woodward Dream Cruise is an alcohol-free, family-oriented event. As public safety is paramount, cruisers are asked to obey all rules of the road.

Police departments from each community patrol on foot, horseback and vehicles during the Cruise to ensure a safe and family-friendly environment for everyone. A team of amateur radio operators also serve as additional “eyes and ears” of law enforcement officials along the Cruise route.

Detroit — Auto enthusiasts from around the globe will rev up their engines and descend on Metro Detroit this weekend for the highly-anticipated Woodward Dream Cruise.

Ushering in more than 1 million people and roughly 40,000 classic street machines to the region, spectators will line up along Woodward Avenue for a stretch spanning nine Oakland County communities this weekend.

Here's everything you need to know.

How far will the car parade stretch? 📍

The cruise runs along a 16-mile route through Berkley, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, Pleasant Ridge and Pontiac in Oakland County.

Woodward Dream Cruise Targeted By New Michigan Bill Proposing $1,000 For Loud Exhausts

• A new bill is being referred to the House Committee on Transportation, targeting Michigan drivers with modified exhaust systems.
• It proposes to fine first-time violators $500, and repeat offenders up to $1,000.
• The bill follows complaints from residents of Woodward Avenue.

Drivers in Michigan could face fines of up to $1,000 and criminal charges if found to have cars with modified exhaust systems. The bill, introduced by state Rep. Natalie Price, D-Berkley, is aimed at targeting loud vehicle exhaust systems, proposing hefty fines and penalties for those who modify their cars to amplify noise.

Introduced on Thursday, the proposed legislation would authorize police to stop vehicles for excessive noise and impose harsher fines. First-time offenders could face a $500 fine, escalating to $1,000 for repeat offenders, with the possibility of a misdemeanor charge for third-time violators. Currently, the penalty for such infractions is just $100.

Price’s bill also aims to penalize those who perform exhaust modifications, targeting both drivers and the mechanics who make the changes. Repeat offenders risk having their vehicles impounded or towed, adding another layer of deterrence.

The bill has been proposed following complaints from residents of Woodward Avenue, a historic corridor famed for the annual Dream Cruise. The cruise is known as the world’s largest one-day automotive event, and it regularly attracts over one million visitors and more than 40,000 vehicles.

“Day and night, Woodward is often used as a racetrack by drivers who have modified their vehicle’s exhaust systems with boosters that amplify their noise and often sound like gunshots,” said Price in a statement .

“The effect is deafening noise and a seriously eroded quality of life for residents and businesses in the surrounding neighborhoods. We need to clamp down on this purposefully disruptive behavior with a targeted approach,” Price added.

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Grewe supports the bill, noting the limitations of current laws. “Existing law limits what we can do about it, and unfortunately, the current $100-per-offense civil infractions do not seem to deter this behavior,” he said. “With higher penalties for those intentionally seeking to disturb the peace, this bill will hopefully disincentivize vehicle modification and offer us more tools to deal with those who continue doing so.”

Sen. Mallory McMorrow highlighted the negative impact of noise pollution. “While cruising on Woodward is a treasured tradition, the ear-splitting noise from new aftermarket exhausts on cars and bikes which run as loud as possible every day from the first warm day of the year until the first frost and late into each evening has made living along this historic corridor a nightmare for many residents.”

He went on to say that many residents have worried that loud cars that backfire are instead gunshots. “Noise pollution at this volume is proven to have highly negative impacts on health — noise which disrupts sleep, wakes babies, shakes houses and even sounds like gunfire.”

The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Transportation and will be debated at a future date. If passed, it could mark a significant shift in how car enthusiasts modify their vehicles, potentially affecting the vibrant car culture that has long been a staple of Woodward Avenue and similar areas.
