News: Hozier Confirms Return For Aussie Tour

will hozier tour australia

(AUS) Following the huge worldwide response to debut artist, Hozier, and the monumental reaction to his smash hit and viral sensation Take Me To Church, Chugg Entertainment and Lunatic Entertainment can now announce that a return tour has been confirmed for October. On his recent debut on Australian shores earlier this month, his throngs of fans were treated to a heart-achingly deep and fathomless performance with his Bluesfest slot drawing crowds of over 10,000 punters.

Early 2015 saw the then little-known Irish artist ascend to worldwide notoriety with a subsequent first time visit to Australia. A festival appearance at Byron Bay’s iconic Bluesfest was confirmed, as well as intimate headline dates at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel and the Metro Theatre in Sydney. With the huge support behind Hozier from commercial radio and other media outlets alike, these shows sold out in a matter of minutes and the legions of empty handed fans were left longing for another opportunity to see this ground-breaking artist. In the wake of Hozier’s debut appearance in the country for these shows, it’s with great pleasure we can confirm the following return dates for later in 2015.

A lot can happen in a few months, and though Andrew Hozier Byrne’s musical past is longer and richer than his tender 24 years suggest, his ascension into the mainstream consciousness has swept across Australia, and the world, at breakneck speed. Since announcing his first ever Australian appearances in early February, he’s performed at the GRAMMYS with Scottish heroine Annie Lennox (watch HERE ) as well as being nominated for the distinguished Song Of The Year award, performed on BBC’s Live Lounge for the second time with a cover of Ariana Grande’s smash hit Problem (watch HERE ) and has been honoured by such artists as Ellie Goulding with the release of her Take Me To Church cover (listen HERE ) with nearly 4 million listens in just a few days, as well as the release of the stunning video of Ukrainian ballet dancer, Sergei Polunin performing an exquisitely choreographed routine to Take Me To Church in a video directed by David LaChappelle (watch HERE ).

2013 saw the release of Hozier’s debut EP Take Me To Church , featuring the breakthrough single of the same name. Since then, with a second EP From Eden and the 2014 release of his debut self-titled LP, tastemakers and critics have wholeheartedly embraced his spirited and soulful sound. Locally, the album has hit #1 on the iTunes Chart and #3 on the ARIA charts and is now certified gold. Take Me To Church is now certified four times platinum, reaching #2 on the ARIA singles charts, #1 on the iTunes chart and #1 on the Australian Radio Airplay Charts. The new single Someone New was serviced to media on 19 March and is being added to radio across the country. The video for the track features Game Of Thrones star Natalie Dormer and has already received 7 million views since premiering.

With so many countless fans missing out on seeing Hozier live on this brief Easter visit, here now is your chance to witness the grandeur and yet deeply intimate nature of this extraordinary artist.

Hozier, Who is Very Much Having a Moment, Performs “Too Sweet” on Colbert: Watch

The post Hozier, Who is Very Much Having a Moment, Performs “Too Sweet” on Colbert: Watch appeared first on Consequence .

It’s safe to say Hozier is having a moment. Back in April, he became the first Irish artist to to top the Billboard Hot 100 since Sinead O’Connor with his song “Too Sweet.” And this week, he’s again making history by playing a four-night sold-out run at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, New York — the first artist to do so in the venue’s 101-year history.

Hozier has plenty of more tour dates on the horizon, including festival appearances at Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Fest, and Montreal’s Osheaga, plus a run of headlining shows across North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. As a preview, he stopped by the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday to perform the chart-topping “Too Sweet.”

It all comes in support of his 2023 album, Unreal Unearth . Revisit our 2023 interview with Hozier , where he shared his thoughts on being perceived, poetry, and preparing for tour.

Hozier

This fall, Irish singer-songwriter Hozier is hitting the road for a full U.S. tour — his first outing post-pandemic. Following a handful of warmup dates at smaller venues stateside and overseas, his Unreal Unearth tour (in support of his long-awaited third album, of the same name, released Aug. 18) will bring him and his new backing band to iconic venues from coast to coast for some of his biggest shows to date.

Hozier Heading for Debut U.K. No. 1 With ‘Unreal Unearth’

Expanding his show (and setlist), trending on billboard, celebrating his heritage.

“This is the first time that I’ll be singing songs in the Irish language or singing parts of songs that are in Irish Gaelic. So I’m really excited to [play] Madison Square Garden or Hollywood Bowl, and sing in Gaeilge [the Irish language]… and watch as, hopefully, concertgoers and fans learn those lines and maybe even sing it with me.”

Fawning Over His Opening Act

“I’ve always been a huge fan of Madison Cunningham — how astoundingly skillful she is on her instrument, and inventive. I think she represents one of the most talented creative forces of our generation. I’m honored she’s on these shows and that I get to hear her music every night and watch her do her thing.”

This story originally appeared in the Aug. 26, 2023, issue of  Billboard.

Hozier connects Irish and Palestinian histories at sold-out New York concert

Hozier was both political and poetical at the first of four sold-out shows at new york's forest hills stadium.

Hozier concert review

Jokes about the straight boyfriends of bisexual women attending Pride could just as easily apply to a Hozier concert, based on both the attendees and the rousing speech for inclusion and tolerance he made during his encore Tuesday night in Forest Hills, Queens. At the show, attended by The A.V. Club , LGBTQ+ rights were clearly top of mind; at one point the singer fastened a Pride flag to his mic stand. But Hozier (on tour for his 2023 album Unreal Unearth and the 2024 Unheard EP) used the subject as a jumping-off point to deliver an almost academic lecture about the history of protest movements in the United States and how they influenced similar movements in Ireland and around the world, ending with a call to end the genocide in Palestine.

Related Content

Hozier spent the evening in New York casting a spell over the crowd, drawing in their attention and enthusiasm as the night wore on to achieve maximum impact for his climactic remarks. Surprisingly, he started the show with “Too Sweet,” his most recent hit, which he subsequently thanked fans for making the first number-one song of his career. He also became the first-ever artist to have four consecutive sold-out shows at New York’s historic Forest Hills Stadium. The sold-out crowd for his first show clearly enjoyed the signature songs (“Jackie & Wilson,” “Francesca”), but the relationship between artist and audience truly locked in when Hozier moved to a smaller stage to perform a perfectly-timed “Cherry Wine” solo at sunset, followed by a twilight rendition of “De Selby (Part 1).” (As the songwriter explained, the Irish Gaelic lyrics translate in part to “you come to me like nightfall.”) It should be noted that Hozier is a powerhouse vocalist with impressive range; throughout the entire set, his live vocals sounded exactly like his records, except for the moments where he went bigger and bolder.

Much has been made of the decline of concert etiquette in the post-COVID era, but this outdoor summer show was an example of a genuinely positive communal experience. Watching the general admission crowd follow the musician from one stage to another like moths to a flame or the flashlights flickering on up in the riser seats are bonuses to seeing a great performer. Even the frequent complaints about filming on phones didn’t seem like such a problem at all. It was more like seeing a group of people taking a picture of a great sunset or the full moon all at once—it’s a human instinct to try to capture something beautiful and special, even if it’s kind of ordinary. No matter if it happens during the next three nights in Forest Hills or throughout the rest of the year as Hozier continues his tour, hearing a chorus of 10,000-plus people tenderly singing along to “ Cherry Wine ” is singularly gorgeous, and not to be missed.

It was in this spirit of community that Hozier finished a rollicking set—multiple times naming and thanking his band members, as well as much of the crew (and even had everyone sing Happy Birthday to the head of his lighting crew)—and re-emerged for a powerful and political encore. He tracked the throughline from the fight for women’s rights to LGBTQ+ rights to the fight to end apartheid in South Africa, preaching that many civil rights movements required the global community to push back. The lengthy speech reached its peak when he condemned the violence in Rafah and called for an end to the genocide of Palestinians.

“No matter where you come from—whether you’re Palestinian, whether you’re an Israeli citizen, you’d want anybody to live in peace and security and safety. And that would mean seeing a Palestine free from occupation, a Palestine free from violence, and a Palestine free to pursue meaningful self-determination and statehood,” Hozier said, encouraging the crowd to reach out to their representatives about the issue. “As I said, I come from Ireland, Ireland has its own history with occupation, centuries and centuries now. And it was two communities coming together and saying, ‘You know what, peace is better,’ and looking at a political solution, a long-term political, peaceful solution. And that was a peace agreement that America was party to brokering as well, too, and it was a huge part of the American citizenship and the American administration was part of brokering that peace agreement, and as a result, I grew up in a peaceful Ireland.”

This was all a prologue to the Wasteland, Baby! track “Nina Cried Power,” which on that record features the singer and activist Mavis Staples. Hozier said Staples, who with her family band The Staple Singers became voices of the American civil rights movement, is an example of Irish revolutionary James Connelly’s quote that “no revolution was ever complete without its poetical expression.” Before concluding the night with his own poetical expression, he left the crowd with a call to action for “A revolution of love, a revolution of honest human witness, a revolution of kindness and radical inclusion that I think all of us would rather see in this world.”
