Western University protesters targeting student-led campus tours: School officials

An afternoon meeting between Western University administration and protesters Tuesday failed to hammer out an agreement to end the pro-Palestine campus encampment that began May 8 and is now into its fourth week.

Protesters who say they want the London university to sever economic ties with Israel or companies doing business there have dug in on campus in a protest, akin to others across North America, over Israel’s months-long military offensive in Hamas-controlled Gaza.

The protesters, calling themselves the Western Divestment Coalition, issued a Tuesday night statement saying school officials promised to offer “an update” on what the school “is considering . . . with a view to bringing about resolution to the encampment.”

But the group added: “Regrettably, the updates proposed by the administration fall significantly short of the students’ expectations.”

In its own statement, the university said it will continue to meet with student representatives but safety issues are growing. School officials said some protesters “scale(d) several storeys of a building to post a flag, putting themselves and others beneath them at serious risk of injury.”

School officials said protesters have also started targeting student-led campus tour groups, “following them closely and chanting at them.”

High school students felt “frightened and shaken by this aggressive behaviour” during the tours, the statement from school officials said.

Although most Western students have left for summer break, the campus is busy with summer classes, school tours and upcoming convocations. The encampment began May 8, echoing similar protests at universities across North America amid the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Israel’s attacks were triggered by the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack by Hamas militants in which 1,200 people were killed and more than 240 taken hostage. Nearly 35,000 Palestinians have died since Israel’s military offensive into the Hamas-controlled territory began, according to Gaza health officials.

Western Oregon University student wins prestigious poetry competition

western uni tour

Posted by Brittany Kima

Pictured: Jasper Beck (left) and Henry Hughes Ph.D. (right)

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Western Oregon University student Jasper Beck, an English major, recently won the prestigious College Undergraduate Poetry Competition sponsored by the National Federation of State Poetry Societies .

“We all knew Jasper was a terrific poet, but winning a major national prize provided serious confirmation of his talent.” shared Henry Hughes, Ph.D., Beck’s English professor.

The contest requires students to submit a manuscript of ten poems, and Beck’s collection, titled “Creator & Destroyer,” was selected as the winner from among 31 submissions from 24 schools in 15 states. NFSPS will publish the collection as a chapbook to be launched at their June convention in Roswell, Georgia. The collection is now available for purchase on Amazon .

“I’ve always viewed poetry as a personal passion, but this award inspires me toward a professional career as a writer.” shared Beck.

Beck will receive a $500 cash prize, free copies of the chapbook, free registration, and a stipend to attend the June conference to read from his collection.

In the official April 2024 NFSPS newsletter, Lana Austin, one of the judges, stated, “From the first poem, I fell in love with Creator & Destroyer because I could see, smell, taste, touch, and hear the worlds these poems inhabit that are dripping with luscious verisimilitude. Deft technical precision is evident, yet organically incorporated when considering the chapbook’s sonic splendor.'”

Current Project

2024 it catalyst listening tour.

Beginning in June 2024, the 2024 IT Catalyst team will be partnering with the WMUx Market Research team to conduct a listening tour.  The listening tour is aimed at strengthening relationships with campus stakeholders, understanding current challenges and opportunities, and actively solving existing or anticipated challenges through the application of IT expertise and resources.

Fuel:   To build and strengthen institutional relationships by demonstrating a genuine desire to engage, understand the needs of stakeholders, and to extend a hand in partnership and solution provision.

Heat:   To boost awareness and appreciation of the members of the WMU IT community and broadcast the variety of solutions and talents that enable WMU to fulfill its mission. Tell our story: What is IT, what are our goals, how we strive to support the needs of WMU and its stakeholders.

Launch:   To identify a single or several IT-related problems to serve as the focus for the collective or multiple teams to adopt and address by the conclusion of the current IT Catalyst session.

Through a series of scheduled conversations with members of the WMU community, two-three members of the IT Catalyst team will ask you and your colleagues questions to elicit details on the current relationship with IT, the perceived value of current service delivery, outstanding and foreseeable needs related to IT, and details on how to best engage and provide a longstanding, positive rapport with each area.  Your honest feedback and open discussion are strongly encouraged.

Pre-meeting

Sessions will be proceeded by the distribution of preliminary questions and guidelines for discussion.  The intent is to prepare you and your colleagues so you have a clear understanding of the listening tour goals and the types of questions that will be asked.

These interactive sessions will focus on listening to you and your colleagues as you share your needs, ideas, and concerns. IT Catalyst members will ask insightful follow-up questions and contribute their own ideas to gain a deeper understanding of the current situation and specific needs. A member of the WMUx Market Research team will be present at each session to capture the ideas, sentiments, and challenges being expressed.

Post-meeting

Following each meeting, a summary of salient points will be compiled and shared with all participants for review, clarification, and confirmation.  If there were needs conveyed for which a solution already exists, those details will be shared either during the session or in the post-session follow-up.

The WMUx Market Research team will work with members of the IT Catalyst team to provide an analysis of the findings.  To effectively address requests, we will create a project scoring matrix to categorize and rank them based on importance, urgency, impact, and feasibility.  All findings, anticipated next steps and the status of projects will be shared on this site.

SPRINGFIELD — There was much foot traffic along historic Mattoon Street on Sunday afternoon, as little knots of people moved from house to house, climbing stairs to see what was inside those narrow brick homes.

It was, of course, the Springfield Preservation Trust’s annual Home Tour, this year taking in a 19th-century gem in the middle of downtown Springfield.

Case Western Reserve University

LLM Program named to International Jurist Magazine Honor Roll

The CWRU seal illuminated behind the commencement stage

The LLM program at Case Western Reserve University was recently named to the International Jurist Magazine’s LLM Honor Roll . This distinction places our program within the top 30 in the United States among over 100 law schools open to foreign attorneys.

Practicing law in a global society demands a firm grasp of cross-border interests and implications of a nation's laws. Attorneys who advise international clients need to understand how to operate in various legal environments and communicate and work effectively with lawyers and clients around the world. Our LLM degrees prepare lawyers for this challenge.

As one of the most well-established LLM programs in the nation, we have refined our teaching approach over the years and now boast a network of over 1,500 successful LLM alumni around the world. We offer four LLM degrees, a joint program with South West University of Political Science and Law, a Summer Language and Law Institute and an LLM+ option. These programs ensure you can gain the knowledge and experience necessary for a successful international law career.

“Our LLM graduates often express how grateful they are for the support they get from LLM faculty and staff,” said Elizabeth Woyczynski, Director of Admissions and Student Services. “It's rewarding to see their positive experiences reflected in the International Jurist Honor Roll.”

Taylor Swift fans cause ‘2.3-magnitude earthquake’ during shows

Quake it off.

As if Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour wasn’t creating enough of a groundswell, Swifties caused such a ruckus during the Seattle, Washington leg that they generated the equivalent of a 2.3 magnitude earthquake — rivaling the legendary “Beastquake” of 2011.

“This was much bigger,” Western Washington University geology professor Jackie Caplan-Auerbach told King 5 after comparing the tectonic activity .

The groundbreaking phenomenon occurred over the weekend while the “Antihero” singer had performed sold-out back-to-back shows to over 144,000 fans at Lumen Field, the Seattle Times reported .

Little did the Grammy winner know that her concert would prove earth-shattering in the seismic sense: The activity from the three-and-a-half-hour marathon caused quite a commotion on a seismometer located next to the stadium, which prompted Caplan-Auerback to conduct a study to see if it surpassed the previous Lumen record caused by the Beastquake.

For those unfamiliar with Seattle sports lore, this seminal event occurred in 2011 after Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch scored a touchdown and fans went wild.

To see how the two events compared tectonically, Caplan-Auerback first analyzed data from the two Swift shows.

“I grabbed the data from both nights of the concert and quickly noticed they were clearly the same pattern of signals,” the scientist explained, per CNN . “If I overlay them on top of each other, they’re nearly identical.”

The only difference was that the Sunday performance was delayed by 26 minutes — which was corroborated by fans online, who said the show had indeed been postponed by half an hour.

She then cross-referenced the data with the number of the “Beastquake” and found that the discrepancy was only about 0.3 on the seismometer.

However, Caplan-Auerback said that in terms of overall magnitude, “Swifties have it in the bag.”

“This was much bigger than the Beast Quake in terms of the raw amplitude of shaking and it went on for a whole lot longer,” she explained, noting that the Swift concerts went on for hours while the 2011 post-touchdown cheering only lasted a few seconds.

Which songs prompted this record-breaking Tayquake?

According to Mouse Reusch, a seismologist at the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network who used a sonogram to identify the tunes performed when the ground shook, the songs that prompted these Tay Tay-induced tremors were “Blank Space” and, perhaps fittingly, “Shake It Off.”

And the fan activity didn’t just register on the Richter scale: Swift herself praised her Pacific Northwest supporters for their seismic energy in a Monday Instagram post.

“Seattle that was genuinely one of my favorite weekends ever,” the “Bad Blood” singer wrote. “Thank you for everything. All the cheering, screaming, jumping, dancing, singing at the top of your lungs.”

Needless to say, the Tayquake marked perhaps the height of an all-star lineup of memorable Swiftie moments, which included fans “hijacking” a plane and women taking over the men’s bathroom during the Texas leg .

Swift is currently nearing the end of the Eras Tour, which could earn $1 billion in sales, potentially making it the highest-grossing tour of all time.

Ingrid Lindblad

Recognizing the Highest-Ranked Women’s Collegiate Golfer in Her Final Year of Eligibility, Lindblad Receives Exemption to the   LPGA Tour’s Portland Classic

Lindblad to Participate in a Two-Day Mentorship Retreat with Juli Inkster, Advances to 2nd Stage of LPGA Q-School and Receives $50,000 Courtesy of Workday and the Juli Inkster Foundation

DUBLIN, Ohio, June 4, 2024 –Five-time All-American and Louisiana State University (LSU) senior Ingrid Lindblad has been named the recipient of the 2024 Inkster Award Presented by Workday, recognizing the highest ranked women’s Division I (DI) collegiate golfer in her final year of eligibility for the 2023-2024 college golf season.

The award is named after Juli Inkster, a World Golf Hall-of-Fame member and LPGA legend who was a three-time All-American at San José State (1979-1982). Inkster elected not to turn professional until finishing her four-year commitment to her school, winning 17 individual titles during her college career. The Inkster Award winner was announced today onsite at the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday, a PGA TOUR event in Dublin, Ohio.

Lindblad, a fifth-year senior, is the top-ranked amateur in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and finished the season as the top-ranked DI women’s college golfer according to Clippd. She captured four victories during the 2023-24 season, highlighted by the individual medalist at the NCAA Regional Championships. She completed her collegiate career with 15 total victories, an SEC record. She also finished third at the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur.

Lindblad turns professional this week and will tee it up on the Epson Tour in Michigan.

As a result of winning the 2024 Inkster Award, Lindblad will receive:

  • Exemption to compete in the 2024 Portland Classic on the LPGA Tour, taking place Aug. 1-4 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Ore.
  • She will automatically advance to the second stage of LPGA Q-School, Oct. 15-18 at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla.
  • As a presenting sponsor of the Inkster Award, Workday will provide $50,000 to the Juli Inkster Foundation to help support Lindblad’s transition to her professional golf career. The $50,000 will support Lindblad’s mentorship retreat with Inkster and assist with Lindblad’s travel expenses.
  • She will join Inkster on a two-day mentorship retreat in Northern California.

“Ingrid has had a decorated amateur and collegiate career at LSU, earned her college degree and excelled on the golf course as the world’s top-ranked amateur,” said Inkster. “That says a lot about not only her performance on the course but also about her goals and passions away from it and putting education as a priority. I look forward to mentoring Ingrid as she navigates the next stage in her professional and personal journeys.

“I also want to thank the Women’s Golf Coaches Association and Workday for partnering with me on this award,” continued Inkster. “To have a player be honored for her commitment to her school, coaches and her teammates is what this award is all about.”

“I’m super excited to be the recipient of this year’s Juli Inkster Award," said Lindblad. "Juli has had an incredible career on tour and I aspire to follow in her footsteps. I would like say thank you a big thank you to Workday and Juli Inkster for this mentorship and opportunity to start my professional career.”

“The Juli Inkster Senior Award is a very unique and special award to receive.  It’s always special to get recognized as one of the best seniors in college golf but I think it’s what comes with winning the award that makes it special,” said Garrett Runion, women’s golf head coach for LSU. “With the help of Workday and Juli Inkster, the winner will be set up very nicely to start their pro career.  I can’t think of three more beneficial items that would help your pro career than what Juli does for these winners.  The chance to win The Juli Inkster award was another reason why Ingrid wanted to come back for her fifth year. Now she will have at least one LPGA Tour event start, a little money for travel and most importantly have a Hall-of-Fame golfer to help mentor her as she starts her professional career. After getting to know Juli more during this process, it’s neat to see how invested she is and how much she wants to help the winners succeed.”

Lindblad wrapped up her collegiate career by leading LSU last month to a T5 finish at the 2024 NCAA Women’s Golf Championships in Carlsbad, Calif., last month, finishing No. 3 in the NCAA rankings. Lindblad, who also recently was named the WGCA Player of the year, compiled 15 career college wins, the most in Southeastern Conference history, and had four wins during the 2023-24 season, including the NCAA Regional Championships in Bryan, Texas. She also recorded three top-three finishes in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, won the 2021 European Ladies Amateur and led Sweden to victory in the Women’s World Amateur Team Championship in France.

The 2024 recipients of the Division II and Division III Inkster Award will be announced at a later date.
