We Began Just Like You We Began Just Like You

Highway Weather was born of necessity.

It began in late 2012 with a simple problem: The app founder, Devan Stormont, was trying to visit family for the winter holidays. The drive was about 7 hours through "middle-of-nowhere" rural country with limited road and cell services. A series of rolling snowstorms were moving in a way that it wasn't clear whether the trip could be made without getting trapped in a storm. Existing apps and websites were not helpful in resolving the problem.

For the sake of safety, the trip was cancelled. Out of frustration, the first version of Highway Weather was created over the following weeks (and originally called Weather Route ).

At first, it was a hobby/personal app used to solve a personal problem and updates were made to fix personal annoyances. Over time, it became popularly adopted by many travelers and commercial users.

Since 2013, it's been our mission to ensure everyone can arrive at their destination safely.

Today, we do that by providing you the best road trip weather planner app on the market.

Weather Channel’s road trip planner helps predict the forecast along your drive

weather on route of travel

Road trips are one of the ultimate summer activities, but it takes a lot of planning especially if you aim to head across the country. While you can map out exactly where you’ll eat and stay and what to go see, plans can change if you come across unexpected weather. Instead of rolling with the punches, you can now attempt to make plan B if you get hit with bad weather by making use of a new The Weather Channel travel planner. In collaboration with Stamen Design, the road trip planner will show you the weather forecast for each stop you make along the drive to help you prepare or choose a new route entirely.

The road trip planner can be especially helpful if there are several different routes you can take from one city to another. “So let’s say you’re driving from New York to San Francisco, and you’re trying to decide whether to go straight across or loop up or down a bit,” the Stamen Design blog post  reads. “This will give you a sense for whether it’s going to be rainy or sunny when you plan to be in the middle of Nebraska.”

To get started, simply type in your starting and ending cities. Click the plus bubble to add stops and the app will generate the predicted weather of that general location. You can also go into the details of each city to note what day and time you plan to leave to get the most accurate forecast. However, since weather predictions are not made for more than a week at a time, things can be a bit limited in that regard.

While the map won’t tell you the best recommended route, it can help with knowing exactly what to bring on the trip. Still, like most weather forecasts, you can’t always expect the predictions to be entirely correct. But for a free app that provides a useful insight, we don’t see a reason not to use The Weather Channel travel planner. Unless, of course, you like the feeling of uncertainty or driving in a storm. After all, what’s a road trip without some spontaneous adventures?

At the moment, the app is currently only available for travel in the United States. Sample your own possible trip here .

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The Red Square

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic!

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

  • Why it’s awesome: The Moscow Kremlin complex includes several palaces and cathedrals and is surrounded by the Kremlin wall. It also houses the principal museum of Russia (the Kremlin Armory).
  • Cost: USD $15.00
  • Food nearby: Bosco Cafe is a charming place to grat a casual bite to eat. They have excellent coffee and wonderful views of the Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin!

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

  • Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .
  • Cost: Free!
  • Food nearby: Khinkal’naya is a charming Georgian restaurant with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick. It’s a popular place with locals and right next to the Red Square!

Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb, is the modernist mausoleum for the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. It’s located within the Red Square and serves as the resting place for the Soviet leader! His preserved body has been on public display since shortly after his death in 1924.

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – St. Basil’s Cathedral

  • Why it’s awesome: A dazzling designed cathedral that showcases Russia’s unique architecture. This cathedral is one of the most recognizable symbols of the country!
  • Cost: USD $8.00
  • Food nearby: Moskovskiy Chaynyy Klub is a cozy cafe serving food items and pipping hot tea; it’s the perfect place to go if you’re visiting Moscow during the winter months!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

DOT promises temporary Route 15 bridge by mid-July as North Jersey town reels from traffic

  • Updated: Jun. 09, 2024, 12:05 a.m. |
  • Published: Jun. 07, 2024, 5:03 p.m.

Route 15 bridge over Rockaway River closed indefinitely for repairs, authorities say

The southbound bridge, which crosses over the river in Jefferson Township, just before Berkshire Valley Road, “has been deemed unsafe for travel,” according to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Department. Mohammed Jafar

  • Larry Higgs | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

State Department of Transportation officials will install a temporary bridge on Route 15 south over the Rockaway River after the loss of all southbound lanes on a 124-year old bridge that was being replaced, detouring tens of thousands of cars onto local Jefferson Township streets for the past four days.

DOT officials made the announcement Friday it plans to install the temporary two-lane bridge that will be delivered and built on an accelerated schedule that could be open to traffic in six weeks. That could change due to bad weather, officials cautioned.

“It is a relief,” said Jefferson Mayor Eric Wilsusen. “People just want to know what’s going on.”

The $11.6 million project went from a routine scheduled closing of one left lane of Route 15 south on Monday, leaving one lane open, to fully closing all southbound lanes on Tuesday causing traffic problems on local roads used as detour routes in the township.

Southbound traffic was closed completely when movement was observed on the bridge abutments, NJDOT officials said. The roadway “exhibited distress” and officials fully closed the bridge “out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of the public and workers.”

Aerial video footage showed a missing section of the bridge over the river. DOT officials said that was “absolutely not” a collapse, but a section of the bridge that was already demolished as part of the replacement project.

The outage affects a major north-south state highway relied on by commuters in the northwestern part of the state to reach larger highways such as I-80, 287, Routes 46 and 10. Unlike some of those highways, there is no parallel alternate route.

For township officials and residents, the impact has been accommodating heavy traffic on two-lane local roads, including many trucks, on streets where traffic volume was much lighter before Tuesday.

“For people living on the diversionary routes, it’s a problem,” Mayor Wilsusen said. “People who live on those roads will feel it 24/7 for the next 6 weeks. At least we have a better time frame…better it’s 6 weeks than 6 months.”

One of those secondary routes on Minnisink Road was briefly out of service Thursday when a loaded dump truck blew a tire and went off the road, Wilsusen said.

“What’s the biggest issue isn’t the cars, it’s the trucks,” Wilsusen said. “We have numerous quarries in Sussex County and that is the biggest problem, putting them on secondary roads with twists and turns.”

The state has pitched in, with State Police helping to direct traffic at intersections on local roads being used as detours. DOT officials are also looking at temporary traffic lights at some intersections, he said.

DOT is monitoring traffic and signal timings on the detour route, and adjustments will be made where possible to mitigate congestion, officials said. A website is being developed to provide project updates and additional information to the public.

Some traffic has eased a little as drivers have found other routes, the mayor said.

DOT officials have opened a designated lane to businesses on Route 15 southbound that were cut off by the detour. But many reported business has fallen off because it is not the same as 33,000 vehicles a day coming through, Wilsusen said.

“Businesses on Route 15 are dying; they said no one is stopping because drivers don’t want to get in lines (of traffic). Everyone is taking a big hit,” he said

Wilsusen is meeting with business owners next week and DOT officials asked to attend, he said.

Ratings and Reviews

Doesn’t tell us where they get their weather data.

Comparing the same route with other apps shows that their weather forecast is inconsistent. It would help to be transparent with where they get their data from to know if it’s accurate. Can’t find it anywhere in the app or the developer’s site. It’s concerning that the data does mot match other drive weather apps.

Developer Response ,

Hi, we get the data from multiple service providers (one of them being Climacell and the second being OpenWeather) to create a better forecast accuracy. As we give you a forecast at the time you arrive at your points, it might be different from other weather forecasts apps. Weather forecast points are snapped to the road layout, so even if you get the weather in any other app, it might not be the same point (coordinates) then in our application. The majority of apps in this category does not give an accurate map or does not request a weather forecast at the time of arrival, taking into account traffic and other weather conditions. In our app we do, that's why our app is being tested and trusted by a lot of truck drivers and motorcyclists who provided us with a lot of data on how to improve forecast accuracy in the first place. Hopefully this helps.

Something major wrong

I am in the three day trial. When I have told it to subscribe and I currently have a subscription, every time I try to touch a button to either reroute or do something the box still pops up that says that I have to do something with the subscription. I can’t test anything or even look at anything in the app because all it does is keep annoying me to get a subscription even though I already have the subscription. While it looks like a really nice app that I would like to try I cannot even get it to function. You developers really need to test your stuff there’s something really wrong and if you can’t get your stuff working then there’s no reason why a person should pay you.
Hi, we apologies for that. If you already have a subscription (or trial) you simply can restore your purchase in the app settings. Please go to the app settings (bottom right menu) and click restore your purchase - it should fix it for you. If restore is unsuccessful it might be because your trial is expired or you do not actually have a subscription. If you need a help please drop us a line on [email protected]. We will be able to assist you. Sorry for inconvenience.

Underwhelmed

I wanted to like this app. Unfortunately, I do not and am choosing another. The app sends you to ads for its paid version even when you are trying to use aspects listed as free. It is very slow to load the route forecast, even though I am on strong WiFi.
Thank you for your review. We are working on a new version which has support of new weather providers and will be working much more stable. It will have a lot of cool features for free.

Severe weather could hamper your travel, outdoor plans for Memorial Day weekend

weather on route of travel

A series of storms is forecast to unleash dangerous weather conditions across the central and eastern U.S. through Memorial Day weekend, likely snarling traffic and delaying flights during one of busiest travel periods of the year .

Friday's weather remained relatively calm throughout the day in many regions, which boasted comfortable temperatures for an early start to the holiday weekend. But weather advisories were in effect in several areas of the Midwest, where a handful of storms barreled through Friday morning.

Those storms brought winds as high as 70 mph and heavy rain Friday to small towns still reeling from powerful winds, rain and tornadoes from earlier in the week, including Greenfield, Iowa, where a twister killed four people , injured 35 others and damaged more than 150 homes on Tuesday.

In southwest Oklahoma, at least one tornado touched down late Thursday, the weather service said. Repair efforts were underway Friday after multiple houses were damaged, including one that had its roof blown off, according to local media reports. In Nebraska, softball-sized hail fell as strong winds uprooted trees and tangled power lines. As of Friday morning, over 25,000 homes and businesses were without power across Iowa and Nebraska, according to a USA TODAY outage tracker .

Meteorologists in the weather service's Quad Cities office on Friday warned of high winds and the potential formation of tornadoes in Iowa and Illinois throughout the day.

"An arcing line of severe storms continues to move east at 60 mph this AM. The primary threats are damaging winds, with embedded tornadoes possible in northwest IL," the weather service said. "After this line moves out, WE ARE NOT DONE! More strong to severe storms are possible this afternoon."

A corridor stretching from northeastern Texas and the Tennessee Valley to Missouri and Illinois – where more than 45 million people live – faces the greatest risk of floods, damaging winds and possible tornadoes on Friday, according to the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center . The cities in the crosshairs of the various storms include Dallas, Chicago, Indianapolis, Memphis and Milwaukee. Flood watches and warnings were in effect throughout eastern Arkansas, northern Mississippi and western Tennessee, where 2-3 inches of rain had fallen .

The persistent threat of severe weather comes on the heels of deadly storms that, since last week, have ravaged the Plains and Midwest, especially the Texas cities of Houston and Temple , and Greenfield, Iowa . Over the last week, at least nine deaths, dozens of injuries and millions of dollars in damages have been tied to the nonstop severe weather outbreak.

Weekend forecast: Plains, Midwest face unrelenting storms

Through the holiday weekend, the Plains and Midwest regions, which for the last several weeks have been battered by potent and deadly storms , will face a constant threat of tornadoes .

Meteorologists forecast "several strong to violent tornadoes, extreme hail, and corridors of widespread wind damage" throughout the central and southern Plains on Saturday. A moderate risk of severe storms – a 4 on a scale of 5 – is concentrated over Kansas and Oklahoma, with Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Wichita being the cities in the threat zone.

The storms are forecast to shift northeast on Sunday, bringing severe thunderstorms over parts of eastern Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. A much larger area of the Midwest and south-central U.S. is in the path of the storm system, too. By Monday, meteorologists expect the poor weather to expand into the mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions.

"Thunderstorms this weekend will not only threaten outdoor events such as weddings, barbeques and camping trips, but they can be dangerous across the Great Plains to the East Coast," according to AccuWeather .

Over 43 million people to travel during stormy holiday weekend

With the unofficial start to summer meeting a ferocious stretch of severe weather, travelers across the central and eastern U.S. may experience delays on the roads and at airports.

Nearly 44 million people  will travel 50 miles or more over the Memorial Day holiday travel period, which is from Friday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, according to projections from The American Automobile Association. Over 38 million people will travel by car, while more than 3.5 million will take flights.

"We haven't seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years," Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement. "We're projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we're exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead."

On Thursday, storms forced officials to temporarily ground flights at New York City's two major airports, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Hundreds of flights were delayed across the mid-Atlantic and New England, including at airports in Boston, New Jersey and Philadelphia.

Cleanup, recovery underway in the aftermath of devastating storms

Across the central U.S., construction crews, utility workers, emergency responders and residents worked to clear the immense wreckage left in the wake of recent storms.

In Greenfield, Iowa, dozens of volunteers joined authorities from around the state to assist in the recovery after the town was decimated Tuesday afternoon by a powerful tornado. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said at the news conference Thursday that the response has been remarkable. "I was on the ground yesterday and I can't even tell you the amount of debris that has been collected and hauled off," she said.

In Houston, authorities worked to repair buildings that were damaged by storms that barreled through the city on May 16, killing eight people and knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses, most of which has been restored this week. The city's emergency management office said several roads will be closed through the weekend as waste management workers continue collecting storm debris.

In Temple, a city about 60 miles north of Austin, emergency responders were clearing downed trees, piles of wreckage and restoring power following a tornado that damaged homes and left several people with minor injuries on Wednesday. In Bell County, which encompasses Temple, more than 25,000 utility customers were without power on Friday, according to a USA TODAY outage tracker .

SpaceX, NASA rocket launch traffic: Fastest routes from Orlando to Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach

Where’s the best place to watch a rocket launch ?

Google and Florida residents will likely say anywhere on the Space Coast of Florida, which has 72 miles of coast and is located about an hour from Orlando theme parks.

With summer vacation approaching, many families will likely be in Orlando to enjoy its theme parks and other attractions. If visitors wanted to add one more “attraction” or must-see thing to do, they could consider driving from Orlando to watch a rocket launch from a Space Coast beach. Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach are the closest beaches from Disney World , Universal Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter and SeaWorld. But with that comes battling the inevitable sluggish Central Florida traffic.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Here are the best ways to get to your destination quickly and a list of the best places to watch a rocket launch from Cape Canaveral or Kennedy Space Center.

Is there a rocket launch in Florida today? Rocket launch calendar for June 2024

Here's what we know about the rocket launch missions, mentioned in  FLORIDA TODAY's rocket launch calendar  for the month of June, which is updated frequently. (Check that link often for rocket launch times and dates because they are routinely subject to change for a variety of reasons.)

Weather permitting and depending on cloud cover, the Space Coast  should get a great view of a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket or a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket liftoff.

FLORIDA TODAY, a USA TODAY Network-Florida newspaper, provides interactive launch coverage and livestream at  floridatoday.com/space  with frequent updates on launches at least 90 minutes in advance, sometimes longer, depending on the mission. For questions or comments, email  Space Reporter Rick Neale  at [email protected] or tweet him  @rickneale1  on X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter. You also can contact Space Reporter Brooke Edwards at [email protected] or tweet her  @brookeofstars  on X or  Instagram .

What does a rocket launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, look like?

Watching a rocket launch lift off from NASA, Kennedy Space Center or Cape Canaveral Space Force Station is a beautiful sight and very Instagram -worthy. Browse the photos in our photo galleries of the June 5, 2024, NASA Starliner rocket launch or a recent SpaceX Starlink rocket launch to see what it’s like.

No tolls route from Orlando to Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Titusville, Kennedy Space Center, Florida

The fastest way to get from downtown Orlando to Central Brevard without tolls is to take State Road 50, then head east on State Road 520 to Cocoa Beach. Cocoa Beach is less than 10 minutes from neighboring Cape Canaveral.

If you want to go to North Brevard (Titusville, Canaveral National Seashore, near Kennedy Space Center) from the downtown Orlando area, take State Road 50.

Toll roads are more time-efficient. Fastest way from Orlando to Brevard County, Florida

No matter where you're coming from, your trip will be faster if you take the routes with tolls, as these roads are the most direct and have the highest average speeds, according to according to Michael Williams, deputy communications director at Florida Department of Transportation.

"Toll roads provide travelers with a choice that typically has greater reliability, less congestion and quicker travel times," Williams said. "Also, toll roads and other limited access roads in Central Florida are patrolled by Road Rangers who can render several services for free, including changing a flat tire, providing one gallon of gas, making minor mechanical repairs and towing a disabled vehicle to a safe spot."

If you're coming to Brevard from Orlando area, the toll roads you'll want to take are State Road 417 or State Road 408 to State Road 528.

It's best to map your route before the drive or have a navigator or directions plugged into your speaker system.

From Orlando theme parks via toll roads to Central Brevard area (Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral): From Walt Disney World, take State Road 417 north, then head to State Road 528 east. Another option is I-4 to State Road 528 east. From Universal Studios, drivers can take State Road 408 east to to State Road 528 east. Or, take State Road 417 north to State Road 528 east.

Does weather, time of day impact best route?

Toll roads are considered the fastest routes for everyone, including motorcyclists, regardless of weather or time of day, according to Williams. However, some times are busier than others.

These roads will experience heaviest traffic from around 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily, according to Williams. Traffic is lightest between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Preparing for your trip: Know what Orlando traffic looks like now

Before heading out, you can map your trip on apps like Google Maps or Apple Maps, Waze and others. Not only will these apps show you how long you can expect your drive to take, but they'll also show you if there are crashes or other delays along your route.

You can also check live traffic feeds from Florida Highway Patrol and FL511 , which will show you crashes, fires and other incidents along your route. FL511's feed allows you to map your trip with directions that can be printed ahead of your drive.

Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles recommends checking your vehicle's fluids and tire pressure before making a trip away from home, and also making sure you have your proof of insurance and registration with you. It's also a good idea to make sure you have a spare tire and to check its pressure prior to your trip, according to FLHSMV.

Storms Snarl Memorial Day Travel After at Least 23 Killed

The weather disrupted flights at airports from Atlanta to Boston on Monday after powerful winds and rain battered towns across the South over the weekend.

Severe Storms and Tornadoes Cause Destruction in Several States

Follow our updated coverage of Tuesday’s severe weather here .

Severe weather stretching across the Midwest and East Coast on Monday disrupted plans for millions of Americans trying to make it home after a busy weekend that was expected to break records for Memorial Day travel. The disruptions followed storms and tornadoes that killed at least 23 people in the South and left hundreds of thousands without power.

Flights at airports from Atlanta to Boston experienced ground delays and stops as severe weather, including heavy rain and potentially damaging wind and hail, moved into much of the Eastern United States on Monday afternoon and evening.

Parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were under severe storm watches through late Monday, and a tornado watch was issued for an area from northern Maryland through eastern North Carolina, including Washington, D.C. Heat and more thunderstorms were forecast for Texas and the Southern Plains on Tuesday, including possible hail and strong winds.

Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration said that they had worked with the airlines to plan for the expected weather disruptions over the Memorial Day weekend. On Friday, 2.9 million people were screened at U.S. airports , the Transportation Security Administration said — a single-day record.

By midday on Monday, La Guardia Airport in New York City had reported average ground delays of 100 minutes. Flights were also delayed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the busiest in the world. And ground stops and major delays were reported or expected at airports in Chicago, Virginia, Baltimore, Washington, Philadelphia and Cleveland because of the storms, according to the F.A.A.

In Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency on Monday morning after four people were killed over the weekend. On Monday afternoon, Gov. Beshear announced a fifth storm-related death in the state, a person who died from a heart attack while cutting fallen trees. More than 150,000 customers in the state were without power at midday after damaging winds.

Elsewhere, a tornado left at least seven people dead in North Texas, including two children ages 2 and 5. Eight people were killed in Arkansas, and two died in Oklahoma as severe storms swept through the region, flattening hundreds of buildings and blowing away homes. And severe thunderstorms in Virginia resulted in at least one fatality, officials said.

Share of customers without power

Thousands of others in the South and the Midwest were without power on Monday, according to the tracking site poweroutage.us .

Later on Monday, severe thunderstorms were expected from Texas to New York, the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center said . Flash flooding was possible from Maryland to the Catskill Mountains in New York, the Weather Service said , and tornadoes were possible in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Forecast risk of severe storms for Monday

The system was the latest to pummel the region over the past few days. Five people were killed and part of a city was obliterated in Iowa last week after a powerful tornado hit.

President Biden issued a statement of condolence to those affected by the storms, and he thanked emergency responders for their work.

“Jill and I are praying for those who tragically lost their lives as a result of devastating tornadoes that tore through Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma, leveling entire communities and leaving a path of destruction in their wake,” Mr. Biden said.

Mr. Biden said that the federal government was “ready to provide support as needed.” He noted that the Memorial Day holiday storms came just weeks after counties in the Midwest and South were recovering from severe weather.

On Sunday, severe thunderstorms in Howell County, Mo., produced hail the size of baseballs and tornadoes that downed trees and damaged homes near the town of Mountain View, said Kelsey Angle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Springfield.

An overhead view of debris scattered across a parking lot, with a brown pickup in the lower right-hand corner.

In Kentucky, Governor Beshear deployed the National Guard to help state forestry workers clear downed trees and dangerous debris. He activated the state’s price-gouging statute to prevent price increases on necessary supplies, and said he believed that the state would qualify for public assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Emergency workers have reported high water, fallen trees and other dangerous conditions in about a third of Kentucky’s 120 counties, mostly in the western part of the state, Jim Gray, the Kentucky transportation secretary, said at a news conference. The storms also impacted nearly 100 state highways.

In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott s igned a severe weather disaster declaration that covered 106 counties. Officials estimate that nearly 100 people were injured over the weekend, more than 200 homes were destroyed and over 220 buildings were damaged.

Johnny Diaz and Mike Ives contributed reporting.

Landslide leads to ‘catastrophic failure’ of popular Wyoming mountain pass highway

Teton pass connects jackson, wyoming, with victor, idaho. without the roadway, drivers now face a detour, which can take more than an hour to complete..

Video from the Wyoming Department of Transportation shows the catastrophic damage to Teton Pass on Saturday.

Teton Pass in Wyoming closed after landslide takes out road

Video from the Wyoming Department of Transportation shows the catastrophic damage to Teton Pass on Saturday.

JACKSON, Wyo. – The "catastrophic failure" of a Wyoming highway outside of Jackson will require travelers to add at least an hour to their drive time while transportation officials devise a clean-up and repair plan.

On Saturday morning, the Wyoming Department of Transportation said a landslide devoured part of State Highway 22, which connects the resort region with communities around Victor, Idaho .

"We understand this highway is a lifeline for commuters, deliveries, medical care access and tourism, especially with limited alternatives and the summer season upon us. WYDOT engineers, surveyors and geologists mobilized quickly to try to maintain highway viability as long as possible, but catastrophic failure could not be avoided," WYDOT said on Saturday.

No one was on the roadway due to a previous mudslide that shut down the thoroughfare, and no construction crews were reported to have been injured during the event.

Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon issued an emergency declaration on Saturday after the section of Highway 22 collapsed.

Gordon said WYDOT engineers and geologists are developing a long-term plan to rebuild the roadway, but there is no estimated time for reopening.

"I am grateful for the efforts of WYDOT staff to protect public safety during this developing situation, and am thankful no one was injured during this incident," Gordons said in a statement.

Photos showed the landslide took out both travel lanes at its widest point, and transportation officials have not stated how long they anticipate the roadway will be closed.

WHAT IS A LANDSLIDE

National Weather Service meteorologists said spring rainfall and significant snowmelt are to blame for river flooding and landslides throughout the region.

Temperatures of 10-20 degrees above normal have caused the ice and snow to rapidly melt, filling rivers and drainage tributaries.

"It's very common to have high-level snow still, and now that the upper levels are seeing the warmup, it's melting, which will continue through the summer ," an NWS meteorologist stated.

Despite the problems along the Teton Pass, nearby rivers such as the Snake, Teton and Wind were only expected to approach minor flood status. However, the NWS warned that water level rises can be unpredictable because of the melting of the snow.

Without a direct thoroughfare in the Teton Pass, a trip that used to take around 35 minutes is now expected to take at least 1 hour and 35 minutes, and that is without any obstructions along the detour. An Idaho resident said because of home prices and the cost of living in Jackson, many workers live in the Teton Valley and commute – a trip now that has more than doubled in time to complete.

WYDOT advised travelers to sign up for updates from 511 Notify for the latest road conditions and closures.
