Trek Australia Buys WA’s Top Retailer, Expands in NSW

Trek Australia have purchased Western Australia’s largest specialist bicycle retailer, The Bicycle Entrepreneur (TBE).

TBE started as a single shop in the Perth suburb of Belmont in 1983 and steadily grew to six locations, all in Perth, including an online store and a central warehouse / mechanical servicing department.

TBE is already a Trek dealer, no doubt the largest in WA, but also currently stocks Giant, Scott, Avanti and Cannondale. It’s highly likely that these other brands will be looking at alternative options once the transaction has been finalised because Trek typically focuses upon its own brands, Trek, Electra and Bontrager within its company stores.

As a transaction between two privately owned companies, no details of the sale have been released and neither party is obliged to make any public comment at all.

However Trek Australia CEO Jason Pye said in a written statement, “We appreciate you reaching out and are excited about the future transition of TBE to Trek on 1 July. TBE have a fantastic business and staff and we look forward to working with them. As the transaction is between two privately owned businesses we will be keeping any further specifics private.”

Meanwhile Michael D’Arcy, co-owner of TBE said, “I believe everyone’s happy. The staff are happy, Trek’s happy, we’re happy and that’s all I really want to say about it.”

Michael said he would be focusing more on the Fusion POS bike shop point of sale software that he’s developed, not just for TBE, but for other bicycle shops.

Meanwhile in NSW, Trek are going to do a major re-fit and re-branding of their flagship Sydney store, Clarence Street Cyclery, which was founded by the Cook family over 40 years ago and sold to Trek several years ago after Tony Cook’s retirement.

Trek are also opening a brand new store in the regional city of Penrith, located at the base of the Blue Mountains, 57 kilometres west of Sydney. Penrith has a population of 216,000 and is currently served by a 99 Bikes, a Blackman Bicycles (which has other stories in Parramatta and Blacktown), and Panther Cycles a large, long established independent.

The Great Eastern Highway is 593km, and links Perth to Kalgoorlie. Stops on the way include John Forrest National Park, Northam and Kokerbin Rock.

The Great Eastern Highway is the main west-to-east road through Western Australia . It links WA capital Perth with the outback mining city of Kalgoorlie .

You’ll likely drive along the Great Eastern Highway on an interstate road trip from Perth to Adelaide , or Perth to Sydney . And nobody’s going to pretend it’s the most interesting drive in the world.

Great Eastern Highway length

The Great Eastern Highway is 593km long and starts just east of Perth CBD. It then heads north east through the city suburbs towards Guildford, the main town in the Swan Valley wine region .

Next comes Midland, before the Great Eastern Highway heads through the Perth Hills towards Mundaring. On the way it passes John Forrest National Park , home of Hovea Falls .

From Mundaring to Northam, the Great Eastern Highway travels through an increasingly rural landscape. Northam is the biggest town on the journey before reaching Kalgoorlie, and after the Perth to Northam leg of the drive you’re properly out in the sticks.

Great Eastern Highway towns

The Great Eastern Highway passes through uninspiring wheatbelt settlements such as Meckering, Kellerberrin and Merredin. The Kokerbin Nature Reserve , south of Kellerberrin and west of Bruce Rock , is probably the main attraction worth diverting off the highway for. This reserve is home to Kokerbin Rock, the third largest monolith in Australia.

At Burracoppin, slightly further along, it’s worth pulling over to read the signs about the State Barrier Fence . Formerly known as the rabbit-proof fence, this was the longest fence in the world, and Burracoppin was where construction started.

Wheatbelt and Goldfields national parks

After that, the Great Eastern Highway is frankly a slog. It passes through the Yellowdine Nature Reserve, Boorabbin National Park and Goldfields Woodlands National Park , but these are more about conservation than visitor experiences.

554 metres in, the Great Eastern Highway meets the Coolgardie – Esperance Highway. This will take you to Norseman and the start of the Eyre Highway across the Nullarbor Plain .

Continue on to Kalgoorlie, however, for tours of the Superpit , the Museum of the Goldfields and Hannans North Tourist Mine .

The Great Eastern Highway is in Western Australia and runs from Perth to Kalgoorlie in the eastern goldfields.

Great Eastern Highway is a 590-kilometre-long (370 mi) road linking the Western Australian capital of Perth with the city of Kalgoorlie. A key route for vehicles accessing the eastern Wheatbelt and the Goldfields, it is the western portion of the main road link between Perth and the eastern states of Australia. Many people commute along this highway, and the traffic is quite heavy in certain parts, however the stopping places and locations near this highway make the journey a real adventure. It is intimately linked with the old railway that used to go to Kalgoorlie, as well as the well marked Golden Pipeline set of locations that follow the water pipeline to Kalgoorlie.

Although not as isolated as other Western Australian country highways, services are limited between Merredin and Southern Cross, and Southern Cross and Coolgardie. It is worth having extra water and being prepared for issues.

The Merredin to Coolgardie stretch has monotonous landscape and limited facilities, so being well stocked with entertainment or spare drinks and food is well worth preparing for if you are travelling with children.

Sunrise and sunset on the more isolated stretches are prone to have wildlife close to the road, having headlights on is one thing, but it is better to travel outside of these times. Emus and kangaroos will come to road drains to drink after any rainfall, specially at those times.

The end points of the highway are in Perth and Kalgoorlie. From the western end in Perth, the highway can be accessed from numerous intersections with other highways and main roads – including Canning, Albany, Tonkin and Roe Highways, and Graham Farmer Freeway – as well as numerous arterial roads and suburban streets. From Kalgoorlie at the other end of the highway, it continues west from Hannan Street, the city's main east–west road.

There are also two rural highways that connect to the highway: Coolgardie–Esperance Highway terminates at Great Eastern Highway in Coolgardie, 40 km (25 mi) west of Kalgoorlie, bringing along interstate traffic from South Australia. Great Southern Highway , one of the highway routes from Albany, ends at Great Eastern Highway at The Lakes, a locality on Perth's eastern fringe. Other road connections are possible, generally at the towns on the highway.

If travelling from the eastern states of Australia, access to the highway is via Eyre Highway, west from state border to Norseman, and then north along Coolgardie–Esperance Highway, from Norseman to Coolgardie.

Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail

The highway runs mostly parallel to the Mundaring to Kalgoorlie water pipeline, which supplies the Goldfields with water from Mundaring Weir in the eastern part of Perth. The Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail is a tourist drive alongside the pipeline, with large sections of the trail following Great Eastern Highway.

Break up the long journey to Kalgoorlie by following the white-on-brown pentagonal heritage trail markers, and stopping by the pumping stations and other historic sites along the way.

The highway has monotonous sections where drivers fall asleep at the wheel - be vigilant in your own wakefulness, as well as watching other vehicles movements and behaviour. Near the goldfields region there can be heavy traffic, large road trains and trucks must be considered a hazard. Never try to overtake large trucks on narrow roads.
