LA food tour reviews

How does lunch work.

Our food tour is a little different. While other tours charge more and give everyone the same thing, we charge less and recommend everyone bring an additional $20-$25 to buy food throughout the tour. This saves you money and gives you control over what you try. If your guide suggests chorizo tacos or vegan ramen and you want currywurst or a wood-fired pizza, go for it. Want to split with your family that’s traveling with you? That works, too. Between our two food hall stops, you’ll have lots of selection.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

Both of our foodie stops have a wide range of dining options, so there truly is something for everyone. Let your guide know if you have certain dietary restrictions, and they can help guide you to the right place to eat.

Is this tour wheelchair accessible?

Yes, this tour is accessible for both wheelchairs and strollers.

What is the cancellation policy?

We understand plans change. We offer a 100% refund or the option to reschedule up to 24 hours before your tour start time. Cancellations within 24 hours aren’t eligible for refunds or rescheduling.

When should I get there?

Plan to show up 15 minutes early. The tour starts promptly, and you may not be able to catch up if you arrive late.

What if it rains?

Our tours run rain or shine, so please check the local forecast to plan. In rare cases when we have to cancel for extreme weather, we’ll offer you the chance to reschedule or give a full refund.

What about gratuities?

Tips are always appreciated but never expected. They’re a great way to tell your guide they did an awesome job and show your appreciation.

“ I found some of my favorite restaurants thanks to the downtown LA food tour. ”

The host was amazing. The food was super unique and tasty. I found some of my favorite restaurants thanks to the downtown LA food tour (:

“ I loved that this was a more luxury experience. ”

I had the most amazing time on this food tour! Penny was a super enthusiastic guide that really knows a lot about the history of Los Angeles. I took the Downtown Los Angeles Tour, and all the restaurants served food that was out of this world! I loved that this was a more luxury experience, in the sense that each stop on the tour was seated at a restaurant.

Eirene G. via Google DTLA Food Tour

“ This is a tour for local foodies looking to explore new neighborhoods…not a generic food tour! ”

We have done 2 walking food tours with Avital and both have been amazing. First, the tour of Venice and then second the tour of Korea Town. The guides were knowledgeable, fun and we tried some really great spots. In Venice my highlight was the hands on sushi experience and in Korea Town I loved the different venues our guide showed us. In K town, our guide Penny was really great, she added humor and so much personality to our tour. This is a tour for local foodies looking to explore new neighborhoods…. not a generic food tour! Very well done!

What Are Los Angeles Food Tours?

LA Food Tours are organized events that take guests to several restaurants in one of the city’s vibrant neighborhoods. The value of taking a food tour versus visiting the restaurants yourself is that food tours are typically guided by a LA local that will show you hidden gems and provide rich context and stories about the place you visit. Los Angeles food tours are great for visitors who want to experience a lot in a short period of time, but also for locals to experience their city through a new perspective.

Avital’s Food Tours are prix fixe, progressive meals with appetizers, entree, dessert, and drinks, each served seated at a different restaurant. Our LA Walking Food Tours focus on quality over quantity. But we promise, you won’t leave hungry! Our goal is  for you to enjoy the highest quality ingredients – small plates with huge flavor and rich stories. We strive to shift your perspective and create a sense of connection with the neighborhood, its history, and the people.

The #1 Lafayette Tour!

We had a wonderful time and lot's of local, great tasting, and fresh food on this tour. Our tour guide was phenomenal and have an abundance of charm, knowledge, and expertise of the food scene in Acadiana. She picked us up from our hotel in her tricked out party tour bus and drove us to 5 different local food stops (restaurants and markets) to sample local food. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who visits the Lafayette, LA area.

Marie, Wow!! What a great tour and hospitality!! This is my 2nd tour and love your zeal for this area and culture. Myself and 3 of my friends did a birthday celebration on your morning tour. We are from this area, and loved the places you brought us to. We all agreed we are interested in taking another tour very soon!!

Exceeded my expectations! Great experience! I highly recommend for guests from out of town!

A wonderful culinary experience! Got to sample a variety of Louisiana classic foods prepared only as a Cajun chef can prepare. Our tour guide, Jay, was fantastic. He shared the rich and colorful history of the people of the area as well as sharing the origins of the delicious foods for which this area is so well known.

Enjoyed tasting different foods from local cuisines that are familiar to our area. The excursion was very well planned out and I enjoyed meeting new people as well as being entertained by Marie our tour guide. She did a fabulous job of giving the group a history of the area as well as being a delightful hostess. Would recommend the tour to everybody. Allons manage!

Even the chef in our group loved it! Our guide was fantastic. Learned some incredible food history facts and the tasting was delicious

After this experience I am booking every single kind of tour they have to offer! I loved every second of it! They accommodated me last minute and were nothing but kind. I took the 3 hr tour and it was phenomenal. Our tour guide was sweet, kind, knowledgeable, and very funny. And the food? Out of this world delicious. They truly picked their spots carefully. The portions are smaller and I am a big guy, however, after all the walking and the many stops I ended up feeling very full and grateful I hadn’t eaten any more than that.

The most fun our family has had in a long time. Wonderful food and a wonderful time!!

My husband booked this tour for our anniversary. I've seen food tours on television and said how nice it would be, but never in a million years thought I would go on one. I must say it was wonderful. From the pickup to the drop-off and everything in between. Our driver was amazing, fun, and very knowledgeable about the history of the tour. I've told a few people about it and we will book again.

We loved this tour from start to finish. We recently moved to Louisiana and wanted to get a taste of the good stuff. We were blown away by Marie’s hospitality. Even despite COVID restrictions she made the whole tour a blast and we left with our bellies full. With so many different restaurants on the tour and no two tours the same, we will indeed be back!

Y’all - if you’re ever in the area, you’ve got to take this tour!!! We went to five places and got to sample the BEST food. And I say ‘sample’ lightly- very generous portions at each place . Such a great way to taste so many different Cajun foods. And there is an ice chest on the bus , so you can make purchases along the way ! Jay was our guide- so knowledgeable on food history . Go do this! You’ll be sooo glad you did!!

Had a great time with Marie! We loved meeting the restaurant owner at our first stop and hearing how it's thrived through generations. Loved the variety of stops and all the food was delicious. Marie would offer information about the history of the food and culture at each place and was happy to answer all of our questions. She is not only knowledgeable but passionate and we loved hearing her story as well. We left feeling happy and full! We would recommend this tour to anyone visiting both near and far!

The Cajun Food Tour was wonderful. Marie knows the local history & has connections with some of the best restaurants with the most delicious food in the area. It was wonderful to just hop on the bus & let her take control of the afternoon. She made it fun & easy to relax with local friends as well as meeting new friends from out of the area. I highly recommend it.

If you are in Lafayette, you need to do this tour!! We were lucky today in that we had both Marie and Whitney as our guides. We shared the tour with visitors from Missouri, Minnesota and locals from Broussard. Our food included crawfish, gumbo, boudin, cracklin, smoked sausage, alligator, pizza, some local wonder and deep fried Oreos. Great way to spend three hours, meet great people and taste great local cuisine!!

My husband and I had a fantastic time on our tour this week! We had a chance to shop at a couple of the establishments, there was nice variety in the places we stopped and the food we tried, and Marie was outstanding! Very knowledgeable about the area, the history of Acadiana and cajun culture, and food. Cajun Food Tours is definitely a MUST if you visit Lafayette! Thankfully we live close enough to do all of the tours :)

Wonderful way to try a variety of food and different restaurants. Jay was our guide...he was very knowledgeable of not only food and food prep, but the history of the area. Also stopped at a local meat market which gave us an opportunity to shop. Wrapping up our two week stay in Lafayette, wish we’d done this last week...we would have made different food choices. Put this tour at the top of your things to do while in Lafayette list.

Delicious food tour + Excellent historical back stories = You cannot miss this tour We observed repeat local clients doing this tour Thank you Ms. Marie.

Nancy & I did the afternoon Cajun Food Tour on Monday, April 8. Marie & Whitney made the tour a wonderful experience. Marie’s Cajun roots, her extensive historical knowledge of the Acadian area of Louisiana, and her thoughtful scheduling of authentic Cajun “must try” foods made this tour unforgettable. This tour should be #1 on your agenda when you plan a trip to Louisiana.

A terrific time was had by all of my group of Vermilion Parish Retired Teachers. Marie is so knowledgeable about all of the restaurants we visited as well as their specialties. The first thing she does when you board the van is present you with two gifts as she tells you the rules for the tour. Then it's time for "Allons Manger" which is Cajun French for "let's go eat!". I am not able to tell you all of the great places we went to as its part of the "surprise " aspect of the tour. I will tell you however that you would be wise not to eat breakfast before you start the Original Cajun Taste Tour! Marie offers at least three other food tours and they all promise to be as enjoyable as the one I am reviewing!!

What a great experience!! We had been on this tour a few years ago and planned our recent trip to get to Lafayette again for their tour. Marie is wonderful, and so helpful. We called and asked for recommendations for the night prior to our tour. The place she recommended was great! Marie is so knowledgeable about the food, culture and activities around the area. A must do if you are in the area!

Mango sticky rice shaved ice with butterfly pea coconut gelato at Kanomwaan.

Every Friday our editors compile a trusty list of recommendations to answer the most pressing of questions: “Where should I eat?“ Here now are four places to check out this weekend in Los Angeles. And if you need some ideas on where to drink, here’s our list of the hottest places to get cocktails in town.

For a solid plant-based meal next to MDR’s boat taxi service: Planta Cocina

Interior of Planta Cocina, with archways and vibrant tiles and pillows.

Whether you live in or visit Los Angeles, fantastic plant-based options abound. Some of the country’s most innovative vegan restaurants are in this region and appeal to vegans and omnivores alike. Check out Planta Cocina this weekend and have a meal with the added bonus of dining in the consistently cooler temperatures in Marina del Rey. The Canadian and American plant-based restaurant chain debuted in 2023 and prepares stunning food like the ahi watermelon nigiri, or firecracker roll layered in sweet potatoes, avocado, unagi, gochujang mayo, and chili salt. Staff throw mushrooms, corn, and Japanese eggplant on the robata grill, though one can also opt for the hearts of palm “crab” tostada, an al pastor taco bowl, and a pasta verde with Woodland mushrooms and tomatillo salsa. In addition to inventive cocktails and an excellent wine selection, the non-alcoholic options are some of the best in the city. While there, take advantage of the adjacent city-operated water taxi service that costs $1 to cruise around the Marina. 4625 Admiralty Way, Suite 104, Marina Del Rey, CA, 90292. — Mona Holmes, reporter

For an underrated late-night pizza situation in the heart of Hollywood: Lucky’s Pizza

food tours la

Luigi Erausquin, who’s been selling delivery and take-out pizzas up in Canoga Park at Lucky’s Pizza to modest success, recently expanded to a handy brick-and-mortar storefront on Hollywood Boulevard serving the same menu of sourdough thin-crust New York-style pizza. The toppings tend to be heavier and mostly agnostic, leading to everything from elemental cheese or pepperoni all the way up to spicy barbecue, buffalo chicken, and meat lovers. This is basically elevated delivery pizza served until the wee hours of the night with a sweet, aromatic crust and the heft to keep all the cheese, sauce, and toppings in place. The Sabrosa pizza is a truly strange but satisfying topping mix of sausage, pineapple, basil, barbecue sauce, Canadian bacon, and ají limo (a Peruvian chile). Erausquin seems focused on a social media-oriented marketing strategy to help build an audience, which is smart given some of his more creative pizzas. However, Erausquin’s not a one-trick pony or a flash in the pan: This is genuinely very tasty pizza. 6541 Hollywood Boulevard, Suite 101, Los Angeles, CA 90028. — Matthew Kang, lead editor

For contemporary Thai desserts built for sharing: Kanomwaan

Mango sticky rice shaved ice with butterfly pea coconut gelato at Kanomwaan.

When Champ Jansaeng and his wife Chanita Maneekarn opened their dessert shop, Kanomwaan , in December 2023, the couple wasn’t sure what the reception would be like. Eight months into the endeavor their hub for Thai sweets is as bustling as neighboring restaurant Ruen Pair, which Jansaeng’s parents opened nearly 30 years ago and the couple now run. Swing in after the sun sets to find a line snaking out the door and groups huddling close to share scoops of Thai-inspired gelati in flavors like dragon fruit and tamarind and elaborate shaved ice presentations. The amply-portioned bing su inspired by the traditional bua loi dessert comes with four accouterments for maximum customization: chewy purple rice balls, salted egg yolk sauce, sweetened condensed milk, and Biscoff cookie crumbs. The heap of finely shaved ice is crowned with whipped cream and a scoop of the shop’s signature Candle Smoke Salted Egg gelato. Come hungry and dig in with help from at least three friends. 5261 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90027. — Cathy Chaplin, senior editor

For a Thai experience in the Santa Ynez Valley: Na Na Thai

A plate of shrimp over Thai noodles.

Located off the small-town-gem-dotted Highway 101, Buellton is perhaps best known for a pea soup restaurant ( Pea Soup Anderson’s, now in hibernation ) and the flame-licked, Santa Maria-style barbecue found at Hitching Post II, which featured in the movie Sideways . But tucked into one of its strip malls is Na Na Thai, run by husband-wife duo Nik and Ashley Ramirez, whose name nods to the street the couple lived on during a period abroad in Thailand, and Nana Plaza, an entertainment district in Bangkok. There’s no better first stop on a Central Coast road trip than Na Na, which immediately charms with red-painted walls and mid-century sconces. The menu brims with the zippy tang of Thai flavors — often a mixture of sour, sweet, salty, and nutty at once. Best bets here include the gai tod (a fried Jidori chicken served with a vinegary nam jim jaew), although a bigger group might go for pla tod, a fried whole seabass served with fried garlic and sauces; the lip-puckering, dried-shrimp-pocked som tum; and its classic pad thai , topped with massive grilled shrimp. Toast to the weekend with some of the restaurant’s local wine selections, and let the good times roll. 225 McMurray Road, Unit E, Buellton, CA 93427. — Nicole Adlman, cities manager
