ITB is an annual event where I meet colleagues from around the world. great networking. more important is the efficiency to have meetings with people from any geografical direction - it would normally ... take me roughly a month to get done. The presentations and speeches vary from really great to udderly poor. as always. negative aspects: meeting rooms/cabins to rent? wifi? a damn app which works properly. the organizers focus to much on the conventional aspects of a trade fair but lack to service and convey with state of the art tools. on- and offline. oh btw: the catering offering is terrible. luckily there are good exhibitors like the austrians who serve great food & drinx. Great business opportunities but the buildings and the layout of Berlin Messe , are pretty much a nightmare. Parking, sitting areas , meeting aeras, food areas, all of it truly terrible. To connect m ... y mobile phone and my laptop i had to go to a restaurant 3 blocks away from the Messe buildings. You cant eat, cant sit, cant connect, cant work anywhere really. The idea to put events in between the exhibitors might look atractive at first but the noise if you are close by having a meeting is totally unaceptable. If you dont care about all of this and you are there for straight business i guess its a top event, since literally everyone important in the travel industry you can find there one way or the other. What is ITB Berlin? A Guide to The World's Largest Travel Trade Show

  • Travel Tips
  • What is ITB Berlin? A Guide to The World’s Largest Travel Trade Show

What is ITB Berlin?

A guide to the world’s largest travel trade show.

Are you planning on attending ITB Berlin 2024 ?

“Hey, Mexico’s doing free cocktails! I’m checking out New Zealand right now but I can meet you there in like 10. I’ll call Ben too, but I think he had a meeting with Israel…”

This is the kind of conversation you overhear a lot at ITB Berlin, and it’s exactly as fun as it sounds.

If you haven’t heard of ITB Berlin before, it’s a pretty big deal. It’s to the tourism industry what ComicCon is to popular culture, or what New York Fashion Week is to the fashion industry, or what the Eating Insects conference is to insect gastronomy advocates.

It’s five days of everything tourism and travel related, it’s fantastic, and it’s on from the the 6th to the 10th of March, 2019.

ITB Berlin Travel Trade Show

So, What is ITB Berlin?

The ITB – or Internationale Tourismus-Börse (in English: International Tourism Exchange) – in Berlin is the world’s biggest travel trade show, and by “world’s biggest” we mean really, really big. The Messe Berlin, where ITB is hosted, sprawls over 160,000 square meters. Considering the average house size in the US is 250 square meters, that’s the equivalent of a decent sized suburb.

To get a sense of just how big we mean, imagine 640 houses smooshed together, then add 160,000 visitors and 10,000 exhibitors, including booths for more than 180 countries. Then imagine if those 10,000 exhibitors started putting on dances and showing videos and hosting interactive gingerbread baking shows and, occasionally, handing out alcohol. You could walk around ITB non-stop for days and still not see everything.

If that’s not enough, the ITB Berlin Convention runs at the same time, which is the world’s leading travel industry think tank. The convention features presentations on global trends and innovations in the tourism industry that provide a great opportunity for learning and networking.

Two thoughts have probably occurred to you by now:

  • Yes. Yes I want to go this giant smoosh house travel exhibition and also that convention sounds great.
  • Where do I start?

Luckily, this handy guide is here to help you get prepared.

Quick resource guide for ITB Berlin

  • Buy your ITB  tickets
  • Book accomodation  for ITB Berlin
  • Start networking using the ITB Networking Directory , found on the ITB Virtual Marketplace
  • Sign up for the ITB  Trade Visitor Newsletter
  • Sign up for Blogger Speed Dating
  • Browse ITB Berlin events and the convention program
  • Download a map of the ITB exhibition grounds
  • Download the ITB app
  • Save the Wifi password (Network: RadissonHotelGroup@ITB Password: radissonhotels)

Find Accommodation and Book Your ITB Tickets

With the entire travel industry coming to Berlin, it’s no surprise that accommodation gets snapped up quickly, so it’s best to book early. You can find a place to stay on your own or get in touch with ITB’s official travel partners for help. Keep in mind that your days at ITB Berlin will be long, and you’ll probably want to head to some of the parties hosted after exhibition hours, so it’s really worth finding somewhere quick and easy to get to from the Messe Berlin. We recommend staying in the western neighborhoods of Berlin – such as Schöneberg, Wilmersdorf, or Charlottenburg – or somewhere along the RingBahn if you’re relying on public transport while you’re there.

Tickets to the trade show are available on the ITB website . It will be possible to buy tickets at the door if you need to, but they will be more expensive and there is often a line. The first three days of the trade show are only open to trade visitors, while the last two days are open to the general public. A lot of the business that takes place at ITB will happen on the trade visitor only days, and many of the senior people in a company will head off before ITB opens to the public, leaving locally hired event staff to tend the booth. So, if you can only attend one or two days of ITB, we strongly recommend the trade only days (if you need another reason, the booths also offer better swag before the general public arrives).

Set your goals for itb berlin.

There are so many things you’ll want to see and do at ITB Berlin, but, unless you have an army of clones, there’s just no way you’ll get to do it all. Setting clear goals for your time at the trade show will help you prioritize, and decide who you should reach out to for meetings, which talks and events you should go to, and the parties you can’t miss.

Have a think about what you really want to achieve at ITB – whether that’s to meet new contacts, form new partnerships, generate leads, or make some sales – and write down your most important goals.

Start Networking With The Travel Industry

ITB is all about networking, however, you can’t rely on just running into the perfect contact at the trade show and striking up a conversation. The sheer size of ITB Berlin and number of people in attendance means that effective networking requires planning, and the sooner you can start planning your meetings, the more you’re going to get out of your experience.

We highly recommend utilizing the ITB Networker Directory , which is part of the ITB Virtual Marketplace , to start making connections as early as possible. Once you’ve created a profile on the Networker Directory you’ll be able to search through contacts, send meeting requests, and keep in touch with people once the trade show is over. The directory even offers recommendations for networking based on your profile.

Keep in mind that the contacts you meet with will be talking to hundreds of other people at ITB, and it’s very unlikely you’ll get the details of any deals, sales, or opportunities hammered out at the show. Your priority at ITB should be on making a good first impression that will set you up for a productive, ongoing conversation. Aim to have short, focused exchanges that you can follow up in longer calls or emails at a later date.

Plan Your ITB Schedule

Even if you’re usually a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of person, we promise that if you put time into planning out your schedule now you’ll be grateful later. There’s nothing worse than hearing about a great party or the perfect forum the day after it’s already happened.

Take a look at the ITB events calendar and convention program to find talks, forums, and parties you won’t want to miss. The ITB Berlin Convention is the world’s leading travel industry think tank, and every year it tackles the most important trends and issues. The convention program is filled with incredibly interesting talks and forums that provide a great opportunity for learning, and for networking organically with other attendees. This year, the convention is focusing on ways the global tourism industry should act on climate change, environmental sustainability, future mobility, and over-tourism.

If you’re a travel blogger, you’ll likely want to sign up for the Blogger Speed Dating event on March 7th. The event is exactly what it sounds like: rounds of very short meetings (8 minutes) with a number of travel industry representatives. Unlike regular speed dating, the meetings are pre-scheduled, so you’ll be able to do some research beforehand (also unlike regular speed dating, your chances of being paired with a guy who collects snakes and still lives with his mom are pretty thin).

As well as the official parties listed in the ITB events calendar, there are also a lot of off-site parties that take place throughout the week of the convention. Some parties you might not hear about until you’re at the show, however a bit of Googling and digging through Facebook Events can definitely lead you to a few.

While you’re planning your schedule, keep in mind that the Messe Berlin grounds are huge (640 houses smooshed together, remember?) so make sure you give yourself enough time to get around as well as occasionally eat, grab a coffee, and go to the bathroom. The size of the trade show and the crowds it brings in means that it can take up to an hour to get between places, and that’s if you don’t get lost. We also recommend making sure your schedule allows for some flexibility, and leaving a few windows of time that you can spend just exploring and enjoying the show.

Have all the Trade Show Resources

Heading to the biggest travel trade show in the world can be a little intimidating, but there are a number of resources to help you feel more prepared. We recommended familiarizing yourself with the exhibition grounds , signing up for the trade visitor newsletter , exploring the ITB Virtual Marketplace , and downloading the official ITB app .

As well as the official ITB resources, there are a few other tools you might find useful. An app for capturing and cataloging business cards, such as the ABBYY business card reader , will save you from having to carry around business cards from everyone you’ve met, and ensure you don’t lose anyone’s contact details. If you’re using public transport to get around in Berlin, you can use the BVG FahrInfo Plus app to plan your route, buy tickets, and get the latest schedules for the city’s S-Bahn, U-Bahn, buses, and trams.

There will be free wifi available to ITB visitors in the Messe Berlin (Network: RadissonHotelGroup@ITB Password: radissonhotels), however it can be very slow and the signal doesn’t reach everywhere. If you need access to reliable high-speed internet while you’re at ITB we recommend bringing your own wireless hotspot or ensuring that you’re covered with your cell plan provider.

Get Excited!

In the digital age, some people might dismiss large trade shows as unnecessary. However, the environment at ITB is something that just can’t be replicated online. Nowhere else can you see a full cross-section of the entire travel industry in one place, or get face time with contacts from across the world. It might be hard to get deals done at ITB, but it’s an opportunity to introduce yourself to people you might never meet otherwise, as well as discover places, products, and services you might never have heard of. In our opinion, trade shows like ITB are as important and valuable as ever.

We do know, however, that it can be easy to get wrapped up in worrying about the details. We suggest taking a step back, and reminding yourself that – at its core – ITB Berlin is all about meeting and connecting with like-minded people in your industry. By the end of your ITB experience you’ll have friends in countries you’ve never been to and a place to stay in towns you’ve never heard of, and you’ll have started conversations that you can develop into fruitful business relationships.

Get excited, because you’re about to experience a trade show like nothing else you’ve ever seen before.

This you'll find only in Berlin: our tips!

You definitely don´t want to miss that in Berlin! Besides the top sights, Berlin has a lot more to offer.

Berlin has been the stage for a lot of world history and not just the fall of the Berlin Wall. You can still discover the traces of history in countless places around the capital. You can also explore traces of history in the modernist housing estates , which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Every three years, the large, supra-regional festival of building culture, the Triennale der Moderne , focuses on Berlin's modernist architecture.

Berlin is also a proper shopping destination . Besides luxury shops along Kurfürstendamm, you will also want to check out the numerous flea markets around the capital. Go on a shopping tour of Berlin: we're certain you'll find something you'll treasure.

Be sure to visit the popular food markets in Berlin's market halls and try out street foods from all over the world. And no Berlin visit is complete without a taste of local cuisine: we have the best tips for you and your travel companions.

Connecticut Families: Paddle boats return to New Britain’s Stanley Quarter Park

N EW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) – Thanks to a partnership between the City of New Britain and the Rotary Club of New Britain-Berlin , a popular waterfront recreation is back!

“It’s been since 2003 since the paddle boats have been a staple here at Stanley Quarter Park ,” said Mayor Erin Stewart (R) of New Britain.

The excitement is real!

“I came down, we were driving by and my husband, he was like, ‘paddleboats!’ I said, ‘The paddleboats, the paddleboats!'” recalled local resident Tina Johnson.

Stewart said the boats are great for tourism.

Anyone can come to this beautiful park and give ‘em a whirl, but this free experience is especially beneficial to local residents.

“In an urban area like us, you wouldn’t think this exists in a city like New Britain but we’re really, really happy to be able to give that experience to people who wouldn’t have it otherwise,” Stewart said.

Folks can just show up, get a little lesson, and adorn a life jacket- which is a must.

Then lead to the boat and enjoy 15 minutes on the water.

“It’s really cool, the nooks you can go into, the nature that’s out there, the birds, go right up to them, it’s really a fun thing,” said Erik Barbieri, director of the New Britain Parks & Recreation Department.

Right now there are three paddle boats and one hydro-bike for the public’s use. One of the boats can accommodate a person in a wheelchair and can be operated with hands instead of feet.

There’s a plan in place to make this opportunity grow.

“We made a three-year $45,000 commitment at the Rotary Club to help fund the purchase of the boats,” said David Obedzinski of the Rotary Club of New Britain-Berlin.

That means more boats are on the way in coming years.

It’s all about savoring summer in the sunshine, enjoying friends, family and an activity that’s pure fun.

“I think we know this has been a home run and it’s going to be for a very long time,” said Barbieri.

The paddle boats are available from noon to 7 p.m., seven days a week. Just head down to the park- you don’t need to sign-up ahead of time.

For the latest news, weather, sports, and streaming video, head to WTNH.com.

‘Babylon Berlin’ Review: Dancing While the World Begins to Burn

The long-awaited fourth season of the cult-favorite German thriller takes place in 1931, with the Nazis not quite in power.

  • Share full article

A man in a suit, trench coat and gray fedora stares out of frame

By Mike Hale

Far from the eyes of Emmy voters or the digital gremlins compiling streaming Top 10 lists, there is a series — a German period drama, of all things — that a small core of aficionados would argue is the world’s best television show.

Some of their fondness may have to do with absence. It has been more than four years since a new season of “Babylon Berlin” became available in the United States. And the first three seasons, which resided formerly on Netflix, moved this year to MHz Choice, a boutique streamer of international series and films whose (unreported) subscription figures would probably constitute a good morning’s uptick for Netflix.

So if you are part of the cult — tracking the right subreddit , commiserating with a Facebook friend group of the requisite sophistication — it is a very big deal that the 12-episode fourth season of “Babylon Berlin,” shown in Germany in 2022, is finally premiering on MHz Choice in the United States on Tuesday. (To answer the immediate questions: $7.99 a month, seven-day free trial, and the full season will be up by July 30.)

Based on historical mystery novels by the German writer Volker Kutscher , the show is a sleek, louchely sexy blend of police procedural, love story, Freudian melodrama and expensively rendered costume epic. All of the elements (with the occasional exception of the heavy psychological symbolism) are juggled with finesse by the show’s creator-writer-directors, Achim von Borries, Henk Handloegten and Tom Tykwer. (Bettine von Borries and Khyana el Bitar are also credited as writers in Season 4.)

The balls stay in the air with the mesmerizing rhythm of one of the cabaret acts at the show’s fictional nightclub, Moka Efti; the effect can be, to use the favorite descriptor among “Babylon Berlin” fans, addictive. The series — and the fourth season in particular, which has a story line involving the gathering of Berlin’s criminal gangs — has been compared to “M,” the great 1931 thriller by the German director Fritz Lang. But a better comparison would be to Lang silents like “Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler” and “Spies,” intricately assembled thrillers that are some of the most deluxe entertainments ever put on film.

It helps, of course, that the place and time the show inhabits are Berlin in the Weimar era of the 1920s and early ’30s, a ready-made backdrop of artistic, cultural and sexual ferment in a city headed toward political and social catastrophe. The action hopscotches from police labs to the soundstages of expressionist films, from munitions factories to beer halls, from baronial manors to squalid tenements, with a studious devotion to the quality and evocativeness of costumes, sets and locations.

Season 4 jumps ahead to New Year’s Eve in 1930, a little over a year after Season 3 ended amid the chaos of the stock market crash. Newsreel footage of bread lines and of angry crowds of the unemployed is used as a counterpoint to scenes of the show’s characters joining in the celebrations as 1931 begins.

In a season-long motif, Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries), the former prostitute who has worked her way onto the police homicide squad, happily dances down the street to a peppy new tune, “A Day Like Gold” (actually sung by the contemporary German jazz singer Max Raabe). Later she will compete in a dance marathon, and she will end the season hoofing to “A Day Like Gold” once again, proclaiming, “Tomorrow is tomorrow, and now is now, and now I want to dance.” The obviousness of the metaphor is mitigated by our knowledge of how completely the world is about to burn.

The new season is typically replete with story lines. On the crime drama side, the murder of a civil servant spurs an investigation of the city’s ringvereine, criminal gangs with connections to boxing clubs. On the social history side, Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch), the police detective and former heroin addict who is Ritter’s on-and-off-again love interest, is enmeshed with the SA, the brown-shirted Nazi paramilitary.

Around those central threads, there are also plots involving a secret society carrying out extrajudicial trials and executions; Ritter’s hard-boiled sister, Toni (Irene Bohm), becoming a murder suspect and going on the run; the continued tribulations of the liberal journalist Katelbach (Karl Markovics), which constitute a self-contained spy thriller; and the arrival in Berlin of an American Jewish gangster, Abraham Goldstein (Mark Ivanir), in search of a diamond stolen from his father. (The season is based on the third novel in Kutscher’s series, “Goldstein.”)

There is even more going on than in previous seasons (the first two were eight episodes each), and while the show is as watchable as ever, the action does not stay as sharply in focus as before — the strands still weave together in credible and entertaining fashion, but the individual story lines do not carry the same dramatic and emotional weight. They do not demand your attention quite as insistently.

There is also an implicit question that begins to weigh on the series in the new season: What happens when the Nazis take over? As long as they remain on the outside, in conflict with the police, army and government, the universe of the show can be one in which most of the characters, most of the time, will act based on rational, relatable motives. Once the historical calculus changes, however, the dramatic calculus of the show will have to change as well, and it seems likely that the tone and structure will need to shift significantly for the show to remain believable. (A fifth season has been ordered; Kutscher’s most recent novel, the ninth in the series, is set in 1937.)

The show’s source material is usually referred to as the Gereon Rath series; Rath is central to the action as the lead detective in the most significant cases, and his mental trauma from his service in World War I — he’s the shattered man of the modern age — is the running theme. But what ties the TV series together, supplying the melancholy yet irrepressible melody at its center, is Fries’s performance as the indomitable Ritter, and that is especially true in Season 4. With her pixieish expressiveness, Fries is equally adept at playing a comic-book action heroine and a situationally ethical justice warrior — a character whose fluidity suits her for the perils of her era.

A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE

image

When, in 1966, ITB was first launched on the fairgrounds in Berlin, nine exhibitors from five countries presented their products and services, namely: Egypt, Brazil, Federal Republic of Germany, Guinea and Iraq. In 2019 it was around 10.00 exhibitors from 181 countries showcasing their products and sevices to around 160.000 visitors of which 113.500 were trade visitors. Wow - what a ride it has been!

With the expert knowledge of the trade fair team, long years of experience and a keen understanding of trends and developments in the international travel industry, ITB Berlin established itself as the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show® . Over the years ITB has not only grown in size, exhibitor numbers and attendance, it has also become a comprehensive industry marketplace, showcasing travel products and services from around the world and growth-intensive niche markets.

Developments in politics, the business world and society have, at all times, also been reflected in the travel industry. Neil Armstrong’s moon landing in 1969 nurtured dreams of space travel, which today no longer seems so far away – as we were able to hear from the world’s longest-serving astronaut at the ITB Convention 2007. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 made it possible for East Germans to finally realize their dream – to be able to travel – and they gained inspiration for this newly found freedom at ITB Berlin.

In 1992, ITB Berlin recognized that many tourists were influenced in their travel choice by environmental considerations and human rights issues, at a time when the show was already focusing on these topics. In 2000, travel technology and the mobile internet received display areas of their own at the show – long before smartphones became part of our daily lives.

2004: The launch of ITB Berlin Convention makes it the the largest industry event of its kind. Also in 2004, the arrival of Facebook and other social networks led to accounts of personal holiday experiences becoming the most popular stories on the web – and since 2011 the ITB eTravel World examines and discusses the latest social media trends.

In 2008 ITB Asia was born in Singapore and developed rapidly to become what it is today: the leading B2B show for the Asian travel market.

By introducing an LGBTQ+ travel section in 2010, ITB Berlin took an important stand regarding equal rights for tourists from lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.

2014: Key topics at the ITB Berlin Convention: big data, data protection and luxury travel. Opening of the CityCube with new possibilities for hosting events, expanding the fairground halls for even more exhibitors.

A big celebration in 2016: it's the 50th edition of ITB Berlin!

In 2017 the first-ever ITB China marked its premiere and proved its importance as China’s new marketplace for the travel trade industry. In 2021 ITB India joined the ITB brand family.

With the Corona pandemic hitting the entire world hard, ITB had to step back from being able to host the world LIVE on the fairgrounds. Following the cancellation of ITB Berlin in 2020 the show was held digitally. Finally, in 2023 we are back as a LIVE event!
