Licensure Requirements

Since West Virginia is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact , you won’t need to get a state-specific license to work as a travel nurse there if you already have a multistate license in another compact state.

If your primary license is in a non-compact state, you may apply for licensure by endorsement. To complete this process, you must:

• Fill out an online application through the RN or LPN nurse portal
• Fill out a second application in the portal for a temporary permit if desired
• Request license verification through Nursys Ⓡ or from your original state of licensure (where you took the NCLEX )
• Complete an RN or LPN fingerprint-based background check

If you have requested a temporary license, it will usually be sent about seven business days after the application is complete and all requested materials have been received. Temporary licenses are valid for only six months.

Licensure Fees

The fees for licensure by endorsement are as follows:

• $125 for endorsement with a temporary permit
• $100 for endorsement without a temporary permit
• $25 for endorsement with a temporary permit ONLY (meaning you do not plan to work in this state for more than 90 days)

There may also be a small transaction fee for online applications.

Charleston Sternwheel Regatta, Live on the Levee road closures

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – It’s time once again for the annual Charleston Sternwheel Regatta!

The 2024 event runs from July 3 through July 7, but with Live on the Levee, weekend outdoor dining downtown and Regatta set up, traffic will start feeling the impact of the festivities on Friday, June 28.

Here’s what you need to know about traffic and additional information in the upcoming weeks:

• On-street parking will not be permitted on Court, Laidley or Summers Streets
• Kanawha Blvd will close from Clendenin St to Hale St at 2 p.m. and will remain closed through Monday, July 8.
• All vehicles must be removed from metered spaces on Capitol St between Kanawha Blvd and Lee St before 3 p.m.
• The intersections of Virginia St and Quarrier St will be accessible.
• Depending on the time the carnival arrives, the Boulevard may not be accessible through Clendenin St.
• Businesses along the boulevard between Pennsylvania Ave and Clendenin St will be accessible from Kanawha Blvd or Virginia St.
• Drivers will not be able to access Kanawha Blvd from Clendenin St.
• All vehicles must be removed from metered parking spaces on Capitol St between Kanawha Blvd and Lee St for outdoor dining and on Summers St between Quarrier St. and Lee St. for outdoor dining preparations and Regatta preparations respectively.
• Summers St. Will be closed from the Summers St. Parking Garage to Lee St. On-street parking will not be permitted, but the garage will be accessible from Quarrier St.
• Metered Parking will not be available in the Shankin Parking Garage from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• The Roosevelt, North Charleston, MLK and Kanawha City community centers will be closed for their Parks and Recreation team to facilitate WesBanco Family Fun Zone activities during the Regatta. City Pools will be open.
• The Kanawha Blvd closure will extend to Morris St at 6 p.m. and remain extended through the fireworks.
• Eastbound and westbound lanes of MacCorkle Ave will close between Porter Rd and Corridor G (US 119) at 7 p.m.
• These closures will reopen after the fireworks. Kanawha Blvd will remain closed from Clendenin St to Hale St.
• At 3 p.m., the Kanawha Blvd will also close from Patrick St to Ohio Ave for fire parade staging.
• On-street parking will not be permitted on Leon Sullivan Way between Kanawha Blvd and Virginia St, or on Virginia St from McFarland St to Leon Sullivan Way.
• Anyone wanting to go on Virginia St between Ohio Ave and Leon Sullivan Way should do so before the Fire Parade, or they will have to stay parked/paused until the parade passes by.
• The race will start on the Boulevard at Magic Island, go to the Hills Plaza, and then turn around back to Magic Island.
• Homes and businesses will be accessible with help from the Charleston Police Department during the closure. People who are parked on the Boulevard will also be able to get out with the help of CPD.
• After the 5K, Kanawha Blvd will stay closed between Ohio Ave and Pennsylvania Ave until 1 p.m. for the All Breed Dog Costume Parade & Weiner Dog Races 
• There will be a rolling closure on the Southside Bridge from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. for the Great Rubber Duck Race.
• The parade route starts at Capitol St. and Lee Way, then turns right onto Quarrier St, then right onto Summers St, then ends at the Slack City Plaza.
• Staging for the Parade will begin at 1:30 at Capitol St. and Lee Way.
• The Kanawha Blvd closure will extend to Morris Street at 7 a.m. for the Classic Car Show. The closure will revert back to Hale Street at 7 p.m.
• Kanawha Blvd will remain closed from Clendenin St to Hale St. while vendors load up and leave.
• Clendenin St, Laidly St, Court St. and Summers St. will also remain closed from Kanawha Blvd to Virginia St.
• City officials say the section of Kanawha Blvd between Court St and Capitol St may not reopen until Tuesday, July 9, depending on the clean-up.

CHARLESTON — The West Virginia Parkways Authority is prepared for another busy Fourth of July travel period on the West Virginia Turnpike.

An estimated 1.385 million vehicle transactions are expected to be completed on the West Virginia Turnpike during the 11-day period from Thursday, June 27 to Sunday, July 7.

“The weekend before and after Fourth of July, historically, have been some of the busiest travel days of the entire year on the West Virginia Turnpike,” said Jeff Miller, Executive Director of the West Virginia Parkways Authority. “This year the Fourth of July falls on a Thursday, which last happened in 2019. We have compared year-to-date, 2023, and 2019 travel numbers to provide a forecast for 2024, which we expect to process 1,385,000 transactions.”

11-Day Travel Forecast – West Virginia Turnpike Vehicle Transactions:

• Friday, June 28, 2024 – 150,000

• Saturday, June 29, 2024: 150,000

• Sunday, June 30, 2024: 115,000

• Monday, July 1, 2024: 105,000

• Tuesday, July 2, 2024: 105,000

• Wednesday, July 3, 2024: 135,000

• Thursday, July 4, 2024: 90,000

• Friday, July 5, 2024: 115,000

• Saturday, July 6, 2024: 140,000

• Sunday, July 7, 2024: 160,000

The estimated three busiest travel days of the period are Friday, June 28; Saturday, June 29; and Sunday, July 7.

“We fully expect that both weekends will be extremely busy, and with many out-of-state travelers passing through our area,” Miller said. “We encourage everyone to plan their travel accordingly and remember that peak travel times every day will be between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

“Our toll booths will be staffed accordingly as well as having traffic flaggers in place,” Miller said. “Our Courtesy Patrol vehicles and State Police Troop 7 will be out for motorist assistance.”

E-ZPass is accepted at all West Virginia Turnpike booths. Drivers may also apply in person at the West Virginia Parkways Authority E-ZPass Customer Service Center, 3310 Piedmont Road, Charleston, West Virginia 25306, or at the Beckley Customer Service Center located at 12 Pikeview Drive, Beckley, West Virginia 25801.

 The tolls for passenger vehicles are $4.25 per plaza.

WVJC School of Nursing Launches New Online/Hybrid Practical Nursing Program

CHARLESTON, W.Va . (WSAZ) - WVJC School of Nursing has launched a new online/hybrid practical nursing training program.

The program is available to students who live within driving distance of the WVJC Bridgeport campus in Bridgeport, West Virginia, the WVJC Charleston campus in Cross Lanes, West Virginia, or James Rumsey Technical Institute in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Leadership says the program offers students the opportunity to balance their lives and education. It allows them to complete didactic practical nursing courses virtually and then attend lab and clinical experiences in person, providing the best of both worlds. This approach is designed to ease students’ burdens, allowing them to complete their practical nursing diploma while managing other responsibilities outside of school.

“The hybrid online Practical Nursing (PN) program allows additional flexibility by limiting in-person time to lab and clinical experiences. We do this by placing the classroom environment in a collaborative online experience,” said WVJC Bridgeport Campus Director, Adam Pratt. “This adds an amount of flexibility to a PN student’s life because they are only in person for lab and clinical experiences while still maintaining the rigor and intensity of the PN training program.”

The direct admission approach is an exciting feature of the new online/hybrid Practical Nursing Program. Once accepted and all institutional requirements have been met, students will be enrolled in the Practical Nursing program. Upon completing the 12-month program, students will earn a diploma in practical nursing and be prepared to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

“We have seen great success with our hybrid modality approach in Martinsburg with our RN students, and we’re excited to expand this opportunity to practical nursing students as well in order to produce more nurses to the workforce in West Virginia,” said WVJC Bridgeport Director Of Nursing, Amanda Poling.

Applications are being accepted for the first cohort of online/hybrid practical nurses, starting in September 2024. Those interested in applying are encouraged to contact the WVJC School of Nursing by visiting wvjc.edu for more information.
