Why rent a car in argentina.

The 8th largest country in the world by land area has a geography that is just begging to be explored. While visiting the cultural hubs of Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Mendoza is certainly worthwhile, it would be a shame to travel to Argentina and not take in its stunning landscapes. With more than 4,000km (or more than 2,500 miles) between the northern corner of the country and the southernmost reaches of it (a drive that would take more than 50 hours), there is a plethora to see if you have a rental car. 

Top ways to enter Argentina

Any information you may find indicating that Australian, Canadian, and American citizens must pay a reciprocity fee to enter Argentina for the purposes of tourism is outdated. As of July 2019, this fee has been suspended for all of the listed nationalities. 

Ezeiza International Airport - The main international airport of both Buenos Aires and Argentina is located southwest of the center of the city in the suburb of Ezeiza.   It is the busiest airport in Argentina and handles most of the international flights to and from the country. Rental cars are readily available from all major international rental companies making it the perfect place to begin and end a road trip through the country. 

Areoparque Jorge Newbery  - If arriving from abroad and your final destination is a city other than Buenos Aires, you are likely to have to make your way to this airport which is the main domestic airport of Buenos Aires. Keep in mind that journey through the city usually takes about an hour but can take even longer if traffic is particularly bad. If you happen to fly to the airport from another city in Argentina and would like to rent a car for your stay in Buenos Aires, major rental companies can be found at the airport.

Cataratas del Iguazú International Airport - This airport is located near the town of Puerto Iguazú, in the province of Misiones. It serves as the gateway to the stunning Iguazu Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Ingeniero Aeronáutico Ambrosio L.V. Taravella International Airport - This airport is located in the city of Cordoba, in central Argentina. It serves as an important hub for domestic flights within Argentina and some international flights to neighboring countries.

If your trip is focused on the Patagonia region of Argentina, it would make more sense to fly into one of the following airports. Most will connect via Buenos Aires if flying in from abroad.

San Carlos de Bariloche Airport - This airport is located in the province of Río Negro, in the northern part of Patagonia. It is one of the busiest airports in Patagonia.

El Calafate International Airport   - This airport is located in the province of Santa Cruz, in the southern part of Patagonia. It serves as the gateway to the famous Perito Moreno Glacier.

The Ushuaia-Malvinas Argentinas International Airport -  Located in the province of Tierra del Fuego, in southern Patagonia, this is the southernmost international airport in the world and serves as the gateway to the city of Ushuaia, which is known as the "End of the World" due to its location at the southern tip of South America.

Those already in South America may enter Argentina by bus. Given that it is virtually impossible to bring a rental car into Argentina from anywhere other than Chile (and even then, the necessary paperwork is expensive), buses are a good way to get to the country.  Mendoza is the natural entry point when coming from Santiago in Chile. Puerto Iguazu is a great starting point if coming from Brazil. Finally, if coming from Bolivia, starting in the stunning provinces of Salta and Jujuy is a great idea. Rental cars can be picked up in the first major city upon entering the country.

If coming from Uruguay, ferries from the charming town of Colonia are the most popular way to get to Argentina. The ferries leave frequently throughout the day and arrive in Buenos Aires in just a couple of hours. If this is how you plan to arrive, then you can pick up a rental car at the downtown locations of either Sixt or Alamo. Though they aren’t at one of the ports, they are within easy reach wby taxi. For example, the Buquebus ferry terminal is just two kilometers from these rental companies’ locations

• Buenos Aires - The capital of Argentina is famous across the world for its culture and tumultuous history. Tourists flock to the metropolis for its architecture, art scene, theaters, and nightlife. When it comes to dining, Argentinian steakhouses are popular across the world, but best in the city in which they originated. Plan to eat dinner late, though. Many places might not even be open at times when you’re used to eating. It is not uncommon to eat dinner at midnight in Buenos Aires! And if you wind up in a bar or club and think it must be lame because no one is there, wait around. Portenos, as the locals are known, don’t start partying until late — really late. It’s typical to start with drinks with friends around midnight, and clubs don’t usually get going until the early morning hours, with everything winding down well after sunrise. 
• Iguazu Falls - Located on the border with Brazil and near the triple border that also includes Paraguay, Iguazu Falls is one of the most visited attractions in South America. The town near the Argentine side of the falls is called Puerto Iguazu, which is a great place to spend the night. The Argentine and Brazilian sides of the falls differ, and it is worth visiting both sides. On the Argentine side, you get to see them closer up, including being right on top of them. On the Brazilian side, you get to see them in all their glory from farther away. Allow more time on the Argentine side as the many trails can take time to walk. Though it is possible to take a car from Argentina to Brazil with some rental companies, the steep fees for such make it unadvisable unless you plan to go further into Brazil. For just visiting Iguazu Falls, it would be best to cross the border with a bus, taxi, or on a tour. 
• The Eastern Coast - Though the western part of southern Argentina is often tourists’ focus due to the stunning scenery of the Andes Mountains, the eastern coast of the country is also worth a drive. Ruta Nacional 3 is the primary road along the coast and there are smaller, unpaved roads that often pas right by the ocean. Expect to see all sorts of wildlife including penguins, whales, and ostriches. Make sure not to miss the Valdes Peninsula.
• Aconcagua - The tallest mountain outside of Asia is 6,961 meters( 22,937 feet) high and is one of the Seven Summits. Though it is not a technical mountain, for the most part, it still deserves all of the respect a mountain of its height should get. Acclimatization is crucial for a mountain of these heights. 
• Ibera National Park - A decades-long effort by conservationists Kristine and Douglas Tompkins came to fruition in the declaration of this national park in December 2018. The wetlands it protects is one of the most biologically diverse areas of the country. It is now being developed for nature-tourism where visitors can spot wildlife and enjoy the landscapes of the park. 
• Northwestern Argentina - The provinces of Jujuy and Salta in between Chile and Bolivia provide stunning landscapes to the adventurous traveler. Though they may seem close to Buenos Aires on a map, Salta, for example, is 1,500km (930 miles) from the capital. This is a lesson in the vastness of the country. If you want to travel a little bit without your rental car, head to San Antonio de los Cobres and take the Train to the Clouds to the Plovorilla Viaduct. Stunning canyons and mountain vistas can be found all over these provinces. You could spend a week in just this part of the country.
• Mendoza - Located in western Argentina, Mendoza is known for producing some of the best wines in South America. There, you can go on wine tours and enjoy tastings, as well as enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking. 
• Patagonia - The region that brings the most tourists to Argentina is the southernmost part of South America which is shared with Chile. It contains the southern reaches of the Andes and Tierra del Fuego, the closest land to Antarctica. The region has long been famous for its natural wonders. While it used to only be popular with those seeking to spend significant time in the wilderness, nowadays, it caters to tourists of all types. Highlights include skiing, lakes, and some of the best national parks in the world. Some of the most beautiful places to visit in Patagonia include Bariloche, El Calafate, El Chalten, and Ushuaia Note that to reach Tierra del Fuego, you must pass through Chile. Driver's license requirements

• Argentina recognizes foreign driver’s licenses if they are in a Latin alphabet. However, some rental car suppliers require you to have an International Driving Permit (IDP). Make sure to check the driver’s license requirements of the rental car supplier before booking the vehicle.
• If your driver’s license is in another alphabet (e.g., Cyrillic or Arabic), you need to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Argentina.
• Even if you have an IDP, you still need to also provide your valid driver’s license from your country
• You must carry your driver’s license, not a copy, with you at all times. 
• You need to have had your driver’s license for at least two years. The required experience might be three years for some types of vehicles like 4x4s.
• Some rental car suppliers charge a young driver fee for drivers between the ages of 22 and 25 and a senior driver fee for drivers over the age of 65.
• There may be additional requirements depending on the car supplier and category, so make sure to check the rental conditions before booking. 

Crossing borders

In general, rentals can be taken from Argentina to Chile, though they must be returned to Argentina.  Avis and Budget allow renters to also take cars to Brazil while Enterprise, Alamo, and Europcar allow renters to also take cars to Brazil and Uruguay.

With all of the companies that allow travel to Chile, you must purchase additional insurance and pay a fee ($80 plus taxes and airport fees with Enterprise and Alamo, for example). The process of obtaining permission differs between companies. 

Budget, Avis, and Sixt require 10-day advance notice which can be done before the rental begins in most cases. Alamo and Enterprise do not allow renters to apply for permission in advance. Instead, they must visit a non-airport rental branch, apply for permission, and then wait 48 hours to pick it up. 

There are restrictions on which types of cars can be taken across the border in southern Argentina. Economy and compact cars are not allowed across the border if rented from El Calafate or anywhere south of it. This is due to the mountain passes that are needed to ascend and descend to get to the border. 

The usual method of avoiding the hassle and fees is to book separate rental cars in each country. This is a perfect strategy if you are planning to travel to the northern part of the country. For example, you can drop off one rental car in Santiago, take a bus to Mendoza, and then pick up another car. 

For travel in Patagonia, though, you may want to be able to cross the border in the rental car. For example, it is impossible to reach the Argentine part of Tierra del Fuego by road from mainland Argentina without crossing into Chile. And if nearby, you certainly don’t want to miss Torres del Paine National Park in Chile.

Chile is very isolated due to having the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Andean Mountains on the other. This restricts the movement of certain agricultural pests. To keep these pests from infecting Chilean crops and forests, there is a strict quarantine as part of the customs procedure. This means that you must declare any fruits, vegetables, firewood, honey, meat, and so forth upon entering the country. If you fail to declare these goods and are caught with them, expect steep fines. 

One-way rentals are usually possible with advanced notice and an extra fee. However, one-way rentals to or from Ushuaia are not possible. 

If you plan to drive in Argentina, you must be prepared to stop to pay tolls. There are many, many toll roads in the country. Though there is an electronic tag available to pay tolls with, rental cars do not come equipped with it nor is it possible to get one for a rental car. While this means you don’t have to worry about the fees associated with these, you will have the inconvenience of having to stop to pay tolls (and don’t worry, there are always physical booths). Be sure to keep plenty of change and small bills, as credit cards are usually not accepted. 

Top driving routes

Some of the most scenic roads in the country are unpaved gravel roads which are well-maintained (though many may be unpassable during periods of heavy rain). Note that traveling on these roads usually does not require a four-wheel-drive vehicle, but rental companies may forbid it or tell you that any insurance coverage is void if you use one of these roads without a 4x4 vehicle. 

• Ruta 40 - Traversing the western side of the country from the border with Bolivia in the north to near Rio Gallegos in the south, Ruta 40 is one of the longest roads in the world - and one of the greatest drives, too. Though most of it is paved, there are some sections you should be wary of if you don’t rent a four-wheel-drive vehicle. You may choose to take a detour along Highways 51 and 68 to avoid the unpaved section of Ruta 40 that passes over Abra del Acay at 4,972 meters. Only high-clearance 4x4 vehicles are suitable for that section of the road. Parts of the road in the province of Santa Cruz in Patagonia are also unpaved. One section can be avoided using provincial routes 5 and 7 which also allows access to the Torres del Paine region without having to drive on gravel. It is also possible to use provincial route 5 to reach Rio Gallegos avoiding the southern unpaved part. 
• The Road of Seven Lakes - This scenic road is located north of Bariloche and is its name suggests, passes beautiful alpine lakes. Though most say the road begins in Villa La Angostura, the road to the village from Bariloche is no less stunning as it hugs the shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi. Between Angostura and San Martin de Los Andes, the road snakes along passing through two national parks. Though the route is only 107km (67 miles) long, you could spend the better part of a day making your way leisurely enjoying the lakes, waterfalls, and hiking opportunities. 
• The Road of 365 Curves  - Some confuse this to be the road that leads to Santiago from Argentina passing near Aconcagua along the way. The title actually refers to the provincial route 52 traveling from Mendoza to Uspallata. The road is paved all the way to the Hotel Villavicencio. The area around the hotel is now a nature reserve that charges a small entrance fee and has trails that you can venture on. From there, you can go back the way you came or take the windy road to the other side of the ridge if you have a suitable vehicle.
• The Wine Route - Argentina is known for its wine regions, and a road trip through the wine country is a must for wine enthusiasts. The drive from Mendoza to Cafayate passes through several wineries and offers stunning views of the Andes Mountains along the way.

These daredevils, particularly in Buenos Aires, enjoy pretending they are ‘the maestro ‘ Argentina’s most famous race car driver, Juan Manuel Fangio.

(Interestingly, Fangio who people claim to see apparitions of in Chacarita cemetery , himself famously never had a driver’s license to drive on public streets his whole life — he said he was scared of the other drivers!)

Considering this, those thinking of renting a car at the airport should contemplate if they will feel comfortable driving from the international airport (32k from downtown Buenos Aires) after a long flight.

While it will be slightly more expensive, you can always get a ride to your hotel and pick up the rental car downtown the following day after a good night’s sleep.

This option works out well because it is usually more expensive to pick up a rental car at the airport anyway.

Most of the risk is mitigated simply by wearing a seatbelt — only 50-60% of the population wear a seatbelt in Argentina.

Enforcement and driving education have improved in Argentina in recent years too.

But for all the inroads Argentina has made in public education about the importance of seat belts and the dangers of drunk driving, it’s been overshadowed by the alarming number of drivers who use their cell phones while on the road.

The most challenging driving in Argentina is in the capital, Buenos Aires , where driving is rather aggressive, such as in New York City or Rome.

In Buenos Aires particularly, it is important to be aware of reckless drivers — often on motorcycles — and distracted pedestrians crossing the road.

In other regions of the country far from the capital, driving tend to be less stressful .

In relaxed Patagonia people are more civilized drivers, but the curvy mountain roads can be a bit tricky and it is important to look out for wildlife.

In some provinces such as Salta and Chubut, the drivers are mellower than those in the capital, but some roads may have potholes or flying gravel .

While highways throughout the country are generally in decent condition, driving on two-lane highways at night requires extra care.

Turning left on a two-lane road can only be done at a light with a green turn arrow, which virtually don’t exist.

This is why even passengers in Buenos Aires will notice taxis or Uber drivers take three right turns to go around the whole block to reach their destination.

Taking a right turn at a red light is also prohibited .

In many municipalities, traffic lights turn from red to yellow before turning green.

Drive with care when approaching intersections that have a four-way stop sign.

Generally, no one stops — at most, they may slow down for a ‘California roll.’

Crossing the intersection becomes a game of chicken, with whoever has the biggest vehicle ‘winning,’ so it pays to drive defensively.

Be aware that — even though it is law — no one seems to pay attention to the fact that the person on the right has the right-of-way at a four-way stop.

Blood alcohol levels allowed permissible for driving in Argentina are quite low.

The level to pass a sobriety test is .02% for motorcycles and .05% for car drivers, which is about one drink per hour for an average-sized person.

The driver’s seat is on the left-hand side of the car in Argentina , so any British weirdos 😀 used to driving on the right-hand side and using a stick shift with their left hand will need to adjust quickly.

Only on the Falkland (Malvinas) islands, a British overseas territory, do they drive on the left.

Popular Road Trips in Argentina

Route 40/ ruta 40.

Argentina’s most famous highway is RN40. It is one of the longest roads in the world snaking along the Andes Mountains, and not surprisingly goes through some pretty spectacular virgin terrain.

Traversing the western side of the country starting from La Quiaca on the border with Bolivia in the north to near Rio Gallegos at the tip of the country, most of Ruta 40 is paved these days. RN40 stretches 5,000 km (3,106 mi) from Jujuy to Santa Cruz and goes through 20 national parks and over many high passes.

The highest point is at almost 5,000 m (16,404 ft) at Abra del Acay pass in the Salta region.

Only high-clearance 4×4 vehicles are suitable for that section of the road.

There is a country-wide initiative to pave the whole road to promote tourism but parts of the 17-province route are unpaved.

Seven Lakes Route/ La Ruta de los Siete Lagos

The Road of Seven Lakes also called the ‘ Circuito Grande ‘ or ‘Big Circuit,’ is a captivating route that winds its way amidst the majestic Andes from San Martín de los Andes to Villa La Angostura. Many people start the route taking Route 40 from Bariloche .

Near Iguazu Falls , rent a car for a short trip to visit the Jesuit ruins. From Buenos Aires head down to the sierras of Tandil for a city getaway with opportunities for hiking. -Just like air travel , car rental is on the expensive side in Argentina because it is not common for locals to rent a car and vehicles are expensive here due to the country’s protectionist policies.

Those who have the time often take flights or long-distance buses to various destinations and then rent a car locally in the area they are visiting.

Renting a car on vacation provides a way to get off the beaten track, gain some flexibility, and accommodate time constraints.

• Can I leave the country with the car to visit neighboring countries?

-Not likely, but you can discuss this with the rental agency in their office.

If possible at all, this will most likely involve a lot of extra fees.

To avoid headaches and huge fees, cross the border and then rent another car.

Throughout Argentina, toll roads are common, and drivers should expect to stop and pay tolls during their journey.

Rental cars do not come equipped with electronic tag for toll payments, so drivers will need to stop at physical booths to pay the toll fees.

Choose your line wisely!

Make sure to carry enough change and small bills (cash is always necessary in Argentina), as foreign credit cards may not accepted.

Fueling Up: Five-Star Treatment

Gas station Service:

Most service stations in Argentina are full-service. 

An attendant will pump the fuel check your oil and potentially wash your windows.

Language:  It’s helpful to know basic Spanish phrases related to fuel. ‘ Nafta ’ is the word for gasoline.

To ask to fill up say, “ Llená el tanque por favor .’ (this is using the vos form)  

Tipping: Isn’t customary at service stations, unless perhaps they do something extra like change your tire.

Safety:  Exercise caution at service stations at night. 

Check your fuel gauge:  Don’t wait until you’re completely out of fuel. Service stations can be more sparsely located in rural areas. Consider carrying a couple of cans of gas if road-tripping in remote areas.

Be patient:  Service stations can get busy during peak hours.

• What if I get pulled over? Do the police bribe in Argentina?

If you are a decent driver it is unlikely you will get pulled over in Argentina (especially since many locals drive like maniacs), but there are police checkpoints along some roads.

When getting pulled over or stopped at a checkpoint, you’ll be required to provide your driver’s license, insurance papers and the legal documents for the car provided by the rental car company, usually kept in the glove compartment.

It is not likely, but it is certainly possible, to cross paths with a police officer trying to supplement their inadequate income by requesting a bribe.

Generally, they will hint or suggest you pay a fine on the spot or they will have to write you a ticket.

If you are sure you did nothing wrong, you can stick to your guns, ‘play dumb’ or lament aloud that don’t have any cash on you.

Suppose it begins to seem like a corrupt officer is dead set on ruining your vacation and you just want to go on your way, slipping a bill, that’s enough for an asado (barbecue) into the paperwork is how some locals choose to get out of the situation.

Others may choose to stick to their guns, which would most likely result in the officer hemming and hawing to waste some time because you called his bluff and he doesn’t actually want to write a ticket. 

Again, it’s an unlikely scenario for a tourist, but forewarned is forearmed.

Renting a car in Argentina is one of the best ways to explore this huge, beautiful country.

In a country that spans over 3,800 kilometres (2,300 miles) from north to south, having your own transportation can be incredibly handy. Whether you’re planning on driving through the north of the country, exploring rural towns or cruising around Patagonia, renting a car will give you the freedom and flexibility to create your own adventure and explore the highlights of Argentina .

I lived in Argentina for two years and, while we owned a car in Buenos Aires, we always rented cars when we flew to other cities in Argentina. (It’s much easier to fly and rent a car rather than drive for two days straight – this country is BIG!)

It can seem confusing to rent a car in a foreign country, especially a country where you may not speak the language. So, to help you out, here are some tips and suggestions for renting a car in Argentina.

1. When should you rent a car in Argentina?

If you plan on spending most of your time in cities like Buenos Aires or Mendoza, renting a car doesn’t make much sense.

Public transport is reliable in these cities – and it may actually be cheaper to use taxis or buses rather than renting a car. In Buenos Aires, Uber is cheap and there’s a good subway system. It’s also very walkable (check out my Buenos Aires itinerary , which uses your feet and public transport).

However, if you’re planning on getting out of the city and exploring more remote places in Argentina , then renting a car is definitely worth considering. This especially applies to those wanting to drive along the famous Ruta Nacional 40 (National Route 40) which runs along the spine of Argentina from north to south or who want to explore Patagonia.

Long-distance buses do traverse most of the country’s roads and are affordable, but you’re at the whim of their fixed schedules, especially if you’ve only got a short time in the country (like only 2 weeks ).

You’re also limited in how you can get around when you arrive at your destination. In remote areas, the attractions are usually spread out, so you’ll need some form of transport to get around.

Do I need to rent a car in Buenos Aires?

I would not recommend renting a car in Buenos Aires!

Driving in Buenos Aires is chaotic. Drivers are pretty aggressive, parking is a nightmare and there are just too many things that could go wrong in a city that you’re not familiar with. Bus drivers think they own the roads and cars rarely give way to pedestrians at pedestrian crossings. There are a lot of one-way streets and the street signs are just so different to what you’re used to back home.

Trust me! We owned a car in Buenos Aires and while it was great for getting out of the city to visit an estancia near Buenos Aires for the weekend, it usually stayed in our parking garage.

There are plenty of things to do in Buenos Aires that don’t require a car. It’s easy to get around the city on public transport or your own two feet.

2. Is it safe to drive in Argentina?

Driving in Argentina is generally pretty safe.

Drivers can be aggressive, but outside of the cities, you’ll find the roads are much more stress-free, with less traffic to contend with.

In rural areas, roads are often unpaved or in poor condition, so you have to keep your wits about you.

The hairiest experience we had was driving up to Iruya in northern Argentina . It’s very steep and the road isn’t wide, so it was quite nerve-wracking squeezing past cars as we anxiously looked down at the sharp drop below!

Avoid driving at night because roads usually aren’t well-lit. There’s also the danger of wild animals crossing the road – they can be hard to see in the dark.

3. How much does renting a car in Argentina cost?

Renting a car in Argentina will cost you anywhere between US$350 and US$550 a week , depending on the type of car and time of year.

For larger cars and 4×4 vehicles, you’ll be paying more than US$700 a week.

That’s probably double what you’d pay in the United States, so, yes, car rental in Argentina can be expensive.

But for me, the freedom of being on your own schedule and being able to go where you want outweighs the cost.

4. How old do you have to be to rent a car?

The minimum age to rent a car in Argentina is 18, but some rental companies may require you to be 21 or even 25 or older.

There are often “young driver” fees if you’re under 25.

Specific rental car companies in Argentina may have their own age restrictions and requirements, so be sure to check with the specific company you plan to rent from before making a reservation.

5. What documents do you need to rent a car?

You don’t need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car in Argentina.

But you do have to have a valid driver’s license that’s in a Latin alphabet (ie. English, Spanish, Italian etc).

If your license is in a non-Roman alphabet (Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic etc), you’ll need an IDP, plus your original driver’s license.

You’ll probably also need to show your passport. This varies from company to company, so it’s best to have it on hand just in case.

And, of course, you’ll need a credit card in your name to cover the rental fees and any additional charges.

6. What kind of car do I need in Argentina?

For most road trips in Argentina, a regular car will be just fine. A 4×4 is usually unnecessary.

Our north Argentina road trip took us to some pretty remote parts on unpaved roads, and we were completely fine with the compact 2WD we rented.

Check the roads where you’ll be driving and make a call about the type of rental car in Argentina you’ll need.

Not renting a 4×4 will save you a lot of money!

Most rental cars in Argentina will be compact or “economy” vehicles, but there are larger cars available if you’re travelling in a group or with a lot of luggage.

One important point to note is that most cars in Argentina have manual transmissions, so if you’re not comfortable driving a manual car, be sure to specifically request an automatic transmission when booking your rental car. They will usually cost a bit more.

7. How to choose the right car rental company

11. Tips for picking up your Argentina car rental

Like anywhere in the world, when you pick up your car, inspect it before you drive away.

Take photos of every single ding, scratch and dent and mark them up on the car report as well.

Make sure the car has a spare tyre and the tools to change it, and that there’s sufficient water and oil.

12. Driving in Argentina

Now you’ve got your car and you’re heading out of the rental lot – hooray! Here’s what you can expect when driving in Argentina.

Argentina road rules

Many of the same rules apply in Argentina – don’t speed, wear a seatbelt, don’t use a mobile phone while driving etc.

But there are a few specifics to be aware of:

• Drive on the right-hand side of the road
• Speed limit signs are in kilometres, not miles
• You must have your headlights on when driving on highways and main roads (I’ve been pulled over for this – I didn’t realise it was the law)
• Carry all your documents in your car when driving – ID, car hire paperwork, insurance etc
• The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05

Speed limits vary, but the maximums are:

• 40km/h (25 mph) in residential areas
• 60km/h (37 mph) in urban areas
• 80km/h (49 mph) on suburban main roads
• 120km/h (74 mph) on highways

Street signs

Unsurprisingly, road signs in Argentina are in Spanish. Here are a few to memorise:

• Pare : Stop
• Retorno : U-turn allowed (more likely it’ll be the curved arrow symbol)
• Entrada : Entrance
• Salida : Exit
• Prohibido : Entry prohibited

There are tollways on many of the main highways, so check this before you head out. You’ll need cash to pay for these – have small notes on hand.

Driving through tollways can be an experience. During peak periods the toll booth attendants can often get sick of having to take money, so they open up the gates and it’s a free for all. I’ve never seen anything like it! Hundreds of cars will speed towards the toll gates to get through before the attendant puts them back down!

Cost of gas in Argentina

Gas prices in Argentina are relatively low compared to other countries – although the impact of inflation can change this. Prices doubled toward the end of 2023.

As of January 2024, petrol is around ARS$662 a litre (US$0.83). You can check the latest prices online .

If you’re driving in rural areas, fill up when you have the chance as petrol/gas stations may not be as common.

Petrol stations aren’t self-service, so someone will always fill up for you.

Parking and security

When parking your car, look for well-lit, secure areas. Parking in a parking garage is usually safest – keep an eye out for the big “E” sign (E for estacionamiento, which means parking garage). There’ll be a fixed fee to park here.

If parking is free on a street, keep an eye out for trapitos . These are people who will look after your car for you – for a fee, of course.

You don’t have to use their services – but if you don’t, you may come back to a keyed car. Just give them a small amount of cash and make life easier. You’ll recognise trapitos by the handkerchief or rag they’re carrying or have hanging out their back pocket.

Like anywhere in the world, avoid leaving valuables in your car and always lock your doors.

Keep your windows up and doors locked when you’re stopped at traffic lights. I’ve had friends and colleagues who’ve had their phones swiped straight out of their hands through an open window while they’ve been waiting for the lights to change.

13. Can you cross the border with a rental car?

Yes, you can cross the border from Argentina into Chile (spend a weekend in Santiago , maybe?).

But vehicles rented in Argentina must be returned in Argentina.

There’s a fee of anywhere between $100 and $250 to take your rental car across the border into Chile.

Let the rental company know well in advance – they usually want 10 days to 2 weeks’ notice if you plan to cross the border.

Want to head over the border for an Uruguay road trip ? The same deal applies, although you’ll have to find a car rental company that will allow you to cross the border. You’ll also need to advise them well ahead, as rental companies need 72 hours to prepare the permit to cross the border.

In my research, I found that most rental companies don’t allow their cars on ferries (ie. the easiest way to get to Uruguay). It might be easier to book a separate rental car in Uruguay.

14. Know how to change a tyre

I’ve had few flat tyres in my life, but the most memorable was as we were heading down the Ruta 40 back to Salta at the end of a road trip around northwest Argentina. All of a sudden one of our rear tyres popped. Luckily it happened on the highway and not on one of the back roads.

Luckily, also, that my husband knew how to change a tyre.

Our friends didn’t.

So, because the roads can be rough in Argentina, make sure you brush up on your tyre-changing skills. Hopefully you won’t need them!

15. What happens if you get into a car accident?

If you’re unfortunate and have an accident while driving in Argentina, do what you’d normally do at home:

• Exchange details with the other driver (if someone else was involved)
• Take photos of your rental car and any other cars involved
• Call your rental company
• Call your insurance company  (if your insurance isn’t through your car rental company)

The multilingual tourist police can be called in an emergency on 0800 999 5000. In Buenos Aires, the number is 911.

16. Do police ask for bribes?

We’ve been pulled over by police while driving in Argentina (for not having our headlights on) and I think that the officer was trying to get us to pay him a “fine” on the spot… aka, a bribe.

We didn’t of course – and I wouldn’t recommend you ever do.

If you think a police officer is asking you for a bribe, simply be persistent and ask for a fine in writing. They’ll usually give up if you keep at it for a while.

Having said this, I’ve rarely heard stories about police in Argentina asking people – residents or foreigners – for bribes, so don’t be overly concerned.

Let’s start with tip one. Even if you just signed up, being a rewards program member often lets you earn loyalty benefits over time — like free upgrades and discounts — and skip the line to go straight to your car. That’s if all goes according to the rental car company’s plan. But those plans are based on a loose sense of fleet availability.

The standard rental car business model is not as straightforward as locking in a reservation and having a car set aside for you. It’s a fluctuating game of give and take, with customers ditching reservations last-minute, not bringing cars back on schedule, vehicles needing repairs and unexpected changes in demand.

To offset the chance of getting stuck with nothing, Peter Vlitas, the executive vice president of partner relations at Internova Travel Group , recommends booking a car with one of the big companies such as Hertz, Enterprise or Avis. “Their fleets are very large, and on the off chance a chosen vehicle isn’t available, they can quickly swap another car so you’re not waiting at the airport,” he wrote in an email.

My colleague, travel reporter Hannah Sampson , likes booking the most basic rental car options available because if they do run out of what you chose, you’ll get bumped up to something better. You can also just ask for an upgrade at the desk if you don’t mind swinging by the rental office, said Laura Doyle, president of travel agency the Travel Mechanic . “Kindness goes a long way in today’s world,” she added.

You can further improve your odds by paying in advance ; it’s a more firm agreement because there’s a financial obligation attached to it, making you a higher priority over customers who haven’t paid.

It doesn’t hurt to give the rental location a call ahead of your pickup date to see if there have been any spikes in demand that could derail your reservation.

Alternatively, you could try booking direct from another car owner through peer-to-peer services like Getaround or Turo . They’re not working with a fleet of cars and flighty customers; they list a specific car you can rent, so you should drive away with the car you actually booked.

A third option is booking a rental that gets delivered to you. New companies such as Kyte allow customers to book a car online and choose a delivery site most convenient for them. Turo hosts may offer the same for a fee. Uber has also gotten into the rental car delivery market with its Valet service.
