Travel medicine

When you’re traveling abroad, you want every aspect of your trip to go well. Unfortunately, each year as many as 25 percent of Americans who travel abroad experience some type of illness during their trip. On a typical two-week trip, travelers can lose an average of three days because of illness.

The Edward-Elmhurst Health travel medicine specialists can help you take proactive steps to stay healthy and make most of your experience. Contact our travel medicine specialists at least six weeks before your departure , and we’ll customize a plan that prepares you for every place on your itinerary.

What to expect at the travel medicine clinic

When you visit our travel medicine clinic, you’ll consult with one of our specialists about your trip. The discussion will cover:

  • All the places you’re visiting, the purpose and timing of your travels, and how long you plan to stay
  • Activities you’re planning on your trip, such as mountain climbing or mission work
  • Your vaccination and medical history, including allergies
  • Your current medications

Travel medicine tailored to your needs

Based on your consultation, we will recommend the appropriate vaccines and prescriptions for your trip. Recommendations will be customized to your unique needs. For example, you may need medication to limit altitude sickness during a climbing expedition. You’ll also learn how to plan for water and food safety, protect yourself from disease-carrying mosquitoes, and deal with traveler’s diarrhea and other common ailments.

We carefully consider the risks and benefits of vaccines and medicines and, in some cases, provide an explanatory waiver rather than a vaccination. This document explains the decision not to give a vaccine, typically due to a person's age, medical condition or current medications.

Vaccines and immunizations

The Edward-Elmhurst travel medicine clinic offers the following vaccines:

  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • Yellow Fever*

*CDC Certified Yellow Fever Immunization site.

Certain vaccinations may require more than one dose and/or a follow-up consultation.

Make an appointment six weeks in advance

Travel medicine consultations must be scheduled in advance. A 4-6 week lead time is strongly recommended for most vaccinations, as there may be a waiting period before the vaccine becomes effective. Payment is due at the time of service. Most insurance companies do not reimburse for this service.

Services offered at:

Edward Hospital Campus 100 Spalding, Suite 212 Naperville, IL 60540

To schedule an appointment, call 630-527-7299 .

Immunizations and Prophylactic Medications

Travel health advice.

The traveler is responsible for researching both required and recommended immunizations and medication for all overseas destinations. The best resource for this information is the country-specific pages available from the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Travelers’ Health page .

We advise travelers to print these recommendations and take them to any medical appointments in order to review the recommendations in light of travel activities and specific in-country locations.

Routine immunizations

All countries recommend travelers be up-to-date on routine immunizations. Refer to the Immunization Schedules provided by the Centers for Disease control and prevention.

Keep in mind that some immunizations require a series or spacing for protection (as long as three or six months for a series of shots), so allow as much time as possible for immunization.

Many routine immunizations are covered under domestic health care plans. It may not cost very much money (or anything at all) to update routine immunizations.

Travel medicine appointments

The CDC provides country-specific information about required or recommended vaccines and medications. For medications or immunizations unavailable from a local pharmacy or family physician (such as anti-malarial tablets or a Yellow Fever vaccine), travelers may need to visit a county health department or a hospital/clinic that specializes in travel medicine.  Check insurance coverage before making an appointment.

Chicago-area Travel Clinic

Northwestern Medicine operates a full-scale Travel Clinic, located at 676 N. Saint Clair Street (Suite 900) in downtown Chicago (near the Northwestern Law school). Call (312) 926-3155 for an appointment .

Deciding on recommended immunizations (or prophylactic medications)

Whether or not to obtain travel immunizations or prophylactic medications is a personal decision that should be made in consultation with a medical professional and in consideration of one’s medical history, destination, planned activities abroad, potential for exposure and possible side effects. Some prophylactic medications for Malaria, for example, interact poorly with certain prescription medications, so it’s critical to discuss these issues with a travel health professional.

Travelers can save “time, money and discomfort” by reviewing the CDC recommendations in light of their itinerary, exposure and activities, and then if applicable, schedule an appointment with a licensed travel health professional.

Cost of immunizations

Domestic health care plans, such as Blue Cross/Blue Shield, may or may not cover travel-related immunizations, so it’s important to discuss this with your practitioner.

Attention Northwestern Students: Aetna Student Health  recently made a business decision to cover travel vaccines the same as other routine vaccines. Referrals are not required as the vaccines are now considered routine. However, the Insured (student) should use providers that are in the Aetna Student Health Network. If the insured chooses to have this service outside of the Aetna Student Health network, then the annual $250.00 deductible will apply, and the plan will pay 80% and the Insured will be responsible for 20%. For more information, please contact [email protected]  or (847) 491-3621.

To learn more about vaccines available on campus and their associated price per dose, visit the   Immunization Requirements FAQs on the Northwestern Medicine Student Health Service website.

Traveling abroad health experts share the shots to get and meds to take to stay healthy, after being cooped up during the pandemic, a lot of americans plan to travel abroad for the first time in years, by lauren petty • published june 13, 2023 • updated on june 13, 2023 at 5:55 pm.

Now that post-pandemic travel is booming, the Northwestern Medicine Travel Clinic is busy too.

“This week has been honeymoon week already and it's only Tuesday,” said Helen Bedross, a registered nurse in the clinic. “A lot of honeymooners going to South Africa and some of the surrounding countries, Asia as well. When it when it opened up, my gosh, the floodgates opened.”

Watch NBC 5 Chicago news stream free, 24/7, wherever you are

With honeymooners, business travelers and families taking international vacations, the staff at the clinic is working to get travelers prepared. They treat families with children age 6 and up.

“I just think it's really important to think ahead about your travel and what you can do to prevent illness like that's the main thing we want to do here,” said Moira Nguyen, a nurse practitioner in the clinic.

“Two people going to Peru can need totally different things. So it's your activities that you're doing, where you're going, your medical history, any medications that you're on -- all those things will let us know what is safe to give you,” Bedross said.

Some locations won’t require a visit.

“Generally Europe is a pretty, you know, ‘go ahead and enjoy your trip’ without visiting us,” Nguyen said.

But what you need in Asia, may be different than what you need in Africa.

“We offer meningitis, yellow fever, pre and post exposure rabies, Japanese encephalitis, the whole gamut of vaccines,” Bedross said.

Feeling out of the loop? We'll catch you up on the Chicago news you need to know. Sign up for the weekly Chicago Catch-Up newsletter here.

It’s not just about immunizations. There are also several prescribed medications you could need, depending on where you’re going and what activities you will be doing.

“We usually give an antibiotic for traveler's diarrhea, but that's just in case. We hope people never have to use it. We also talk about altitude sickness medications, motion sickness, there's some things with freshwater exposure,” Bedross said.

Anti-malaria pills are common too.

When it comes to vaccines, timing is key. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting vaccinations four to six weeks prior to departure, if possible.

“Generally, we say at least four weeks. Most vaccines, depending on if it's just a single dose, take at least 10 to 14 days to become effective,” Nguyen said.

There are, however, some two-dose vaccines, so health experts advise you to plan ahead to have a safe and healthy trip.
