Notify customers of known delays, cancellations and diversions

While we always aim to get you to your destination on time, there may be times when weather, air traffic control or other operational factors lead to cancellations, diversions or flight delays. When this happens, we will make available the most current and accurate information about your flight to or from the US, within 30 minutes of us learning of a cancellation, diversion or delay of 30 minutes or more.

We will provide you with this information via:

  • The boarding gate area of an impacted flight, within the US.
  • Airport flight information display screens at departure airports (that are under our direct control), within the US.
  • Flight status updates at www.emirates.com (Opens page in the same tab) and the Emirates mobile app.
  • Upon request, via phone call to the Emirates customer contact center.
  • Email alerts and notifications through the Emirates mobile app, if you have subscribed to Emirates flight status notifications.

Deliver baggage on time

We always strive to deliver your baggage in a timely manner following the flight’s arrival.

If your baggage does not arrive on the flight with you, please see an Emirates representative in the baggage reclaim area and file a missing baggage report. We will make every reasonable effort to deliver your baggage to your final destination within 24 hours when you are flying Emirates. When your journey involves another carrier(s), you may experience a slightly longer delay.

If you incur expenses because of delayed baggage and are eligible to receive compensation, we will reimburse you, as required by applicable international agreements and up to international limits, for reasonable and necessary out-of-pocket expenses.

We will also reimburse any additional fees you paid us to transport a bag, if that bag is lost.

Refunds requested within 24 hours of booking

Provide prompt ticket refunds.

We will provide prompt refunds for eligible tickets once we receive your request. If your ticket was purchased online or via the Emirates customer contact center, the refund will be credited to the card used to make the purchase. You may make a refund request for your booking via our online refund request form (Opens link in the same tab) . Refunds are issued in accordance with fare conditions.

If you used a credit card to make your purchase, we will submit the request for refund to the credit card issuer within seven business days of receiving your completed request. The credit card issuer will refund the purchase price under the terms of the credit card agreement. Please note that your credit card statement may not immediately reflect the refund. For purchases made with cash, check or other forms of payment, we will issue your refund within 20 days of receipt of your completed request for refund.

This also applies to refunding fees charged for optional services that you are unable to use due to oversales or flight cancellation.

Properly accommodate customers with disabilities and other special needs

Customers with disabilities.

Customers with disabilities can look forward to a safe and comfortable journey with Emirates. We will be pleased to assist you in any way we can. We recommend that you notify us at the time of booking, or at least 48 hours before your flight, of any assistance you would like us to provide before, during, or after your flight.

Please check our Accessible Travel page (Opens page in the same tab) for details of the many services we offer to accommodate our customers with disabilities and other special needs.

During lengthy tarmac delays, our employees will make every effort to properly accommodate customers with disabilities and other special needs. For further information, please see the Emirates Tarmac Delay Contingency Plan (Opens page in the same tab) .

Emirates has employees at each airport that operates services to/from the US, who are trained as Complaint Resolution Officials (CROs). Our CROs are trained to comply with the Air Carriers Access Act (14 CFR Part 382) and we will make a trained CRO available during operational hours, either in person or via telephone.

You can access a copy of the US Airline Passengers with Disabilities Bill of Rights on the  United States Department of Transportation website (Opens an external website in a new tab) .

Children traveling without an adult

We know that letting your child fly alone can be worrisome, for both parent and child. That is why we have developed our Unaccompanied Minors service for children traveling alone with Emirates.

We make sure your child enjoys a smooth and stress-free journey from start to finish with our friendly, helpful staff. Unaccompanied Minors are children above five and under 12 years of age traveling alone, and are entitled to the Unaccompanied Minors service as long as they are traveling on a full adult fare ticket. Please note that we do not accept children under five as Unaccompanied Minors. Please contact our customer contact center to arrange these bookings. For further information on our Unaccompanied Minors service, please see the Unaccompanied Minors page (Opens page in the same tab) .

Children from 12 years of age up to, but not including, their 16th birthday, can also enjoy the Unaccompanied Minors (Opens page in the same tab) service for a fee, if specifically requested by the parent or guardian.

Be aware that:

  • To avoid any inconvenience to your child, if there is another airline included in the itinerary, we recommend that the connecting time at transfer points does not exceed four hours.
  • If Dubai is the transfer point, the maximum permitted connecting time is eight hours. This is because we have a specialist team to take care of children.
  • We cannot accept Unaccompanied Minors for journeys with transfer connections involving either an overnight stay at a transfer point or a transfer between two airports at the connecting point, unless the parent or guardian has arranged for the child to be met and cared for at the transfer point (and these arrangements are confirmed by the local Emirates office), or if the child is traveling with an adult escort.
  • Please note that the Emirates Unaccompanied Minors service is not available in conjunction with a 'child' discounted ticket; you must purchase a full adult fare.

Meeting customers’ essential needs during lengthy tarmac delays at US airports

Treat customers fairly and consistently in the case of oversold flights at us airports.

Airline flights may occasionally be overbooked, and there is a slight chance that a seat will not be available on a flight for which you hold a confirmed reservation.

If your flight is oversold, you will not be denied a seat until we first ask for volunteers willing to give up their confirmed seats in exchange for compensation (in an amount determined by Emirates) and travel on a later, specified flight. If there are not enough volunteers, we will deny boarding to customers in accordance with Emirates’ boarding priority policy. If you are involuntarily denied boarding and have complied with our check-in and other applicable terms and conditions, we will give you a written statement that explains your rights and our boarding priority policy for an oversold flight. You will generally be entitled to compensation and transportation on an alternate flight, as required by 14 CFR Part 250.

Compensation will not be payable to a customer who does not comply with Emirates’ reservation and check-in requirements, or who cannot be accepted for transportation under the terms and conditions detailed in Emirates' Conditions of Carriage (Opens a PDF in a new tab) .

Our rules for the payment of compensation, as well as our boarding priority policy, are available at each US airport we serve.

Disclose cancellation policies, frequent flyer rules, aircraft configuration and lavatory availability

We will give you clear information on our website about policies and service aspects that may be important to you and, when you ask, through our customer contact centers. This means providing clear information about:

  • Aircraft configuration and lavatory availability (Opens page in the same tab) .
  • Important terms and conditions that apply to your ticket and travel, including cancellation and refund policies.

We also make information about our Emirates Skywards loyalty program (Opens link in the same tab) on our website (Opens page in the same tab) and in materials provided upon enrollment and in updates to Emirates Skywards members.

Notify customers in a timely manner of changes to a travel itinerary

Occasionally, unforeseen or extraordinary circumstances require us to change the schedule of a flight after the booking has been made. Where the change is known at least seven days in advance, we will endeavor to advise customers and travel agents of changes to itineraries.

We will contact customers who have booked with us directly, either via our website or our customer contact centers, using the telephone number or email address given to us at the time of booking.

For customers who booked through a travel agent or tour operator, and who have not provided us with their contact details, we will send a notification message directly to the agent/operator through Emirates’ reservations system.

Ensure responsiveness to customer complaints

Identify services to mitigate inconveniences resulting from cancellations and misconnections.

  • Do our best to contact you in advance regarding a flight cancellation using the contact information in your reservation or in your Emirates Skywards profile.
  • Work to confirm you on the next flight we operate that has seats available in the same class of service when rebooking is necessary.
  • Provide refreshments and hotel accommodation (if available), if an overnight stay is required while you are away from your home or destination.

Emirates Wants to Shake Up Ticket Sales Through Closer Ties to Travel Agencies

Sean O'Neill, Skift

April 7th, 2021 at 2:00 AM EDT

Emirates is one of the largest airlines yet to try to shake up how tickets are sold worldwide. Sabre is at the negotiation table to avoid a content cutoff in July, while other tech partners and travel agencies are still figuring out how to adapt to the new commercial model.

Emirates is hoping to return to profitability next year by trimming costs while recapturing demand ahead of its rivals.

The Dubai-based carrier has been revealing details about one of its newest strategies. It aims to make its distribution more cost-effective. In July, Emirates will adopt a carrot and stick approach to encourage travel agencies to get more of their content from its data feeds rather than from middlemen tech companies.

Emirates’ “carrot” for travel agencies is that it has rolled out a digital portal to make it easier for agents to book products that the carrier has only been offering for sale via Emirates.com .

The “stick” is that — beginning on July 1 — Emirates will slap a surcharge on tickets booked through the software of global distribution system players. Travel agencies will avoid the fee by booking instead through the carrier’s direct connection gateway, launched last October.

“Our strategy is to become more agile,” said Adnan Abdul Fattah Kazim, Emirates’ chief commercial officer. “We want to move away from the marketplace treating our content like it’s a commodity.”

Emirates will add a fee of between $14 and $25 for tickets booked through the global distribution system players Amadeus , Travelport , China’s TravelSky , Japan’s Infini , and Russia’s Sirena .

As a side note: Emirates’ contract with Sabre for new and old types of airline distribution content ends in July. The companies are negotiating, Kazim said.

Emirates is arguably now the largest carrier to introduce surcharges, joining predecessors Lufthansa Group, Air France-KLM Group, International Airlines Group, Singapore Airlines, Aegean, and Qantas. Emirates is the world’s fourth-largest airline — after American, Delta, and United — when ranked by revenue passenger-kilometers , or the distance that paying passengers flew pre-pandemic, according to the International Air Transport Association.

Emirates’ Breakaway Distribution Move

Why now? Emirates is a relative latecomer to “unbundling” its product. In 2019, years after some other carriers, it “unbundled” its business class fares . It offered business class seats as standalone products. It required passengers to pay more for lounge access, advanced seat selection, chauffeured drives to the airport, and other benefits that the carrier had once included with the typical seat purchase.

Adnan Kazim emirates

Airline Weekly has pointed out the context for this unbundling move. The recent bust in oil prices has weakened many economies, such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Russia. That, in turn, has hurt business class ticket sales. (Airline Weekly subscribers can read “ Emirates’ Heavy Metal Muddle .”)

Emirates found itself competing in some markets against rival carriers that had already unbundled products, giving them a cheaper base price point for more bare-bones tickets.

So Emirates responded by setting aside some of its products, such as seat upgrades and the ability to pay excess baggage fees, for sale only on its consumer site, Emirates.com . Its new gateway portal will make this same content available to participating travel agencies and other trade partners.

Emirates plans to roll out “dynamic pricing,” also known as “continuous pricing,” through its gateway, Kazim.

“Part of our strategy is to have more dynamic pricing, with fares changing quite rapidly in response to market requirements on a daily basis,” Kazim said.

For context on the trend, see Skift’s recent article: “ Air France-KLM Joins Airlines Getting Ahead of Fare Wars by Mimicking Uber .”

A Journey With Agencies

Some travel agencies that are already coping with pandemic-related disruptions may balk at new workflows. Some won’t like seeing their traditional incentive payment models overturned, too.

“We’re working very closely with agencies so that the end game will be a benefit to these agencies,” Kazim said. “We’ll be working with them on the incentives and other factors.”

The carrier is in talks with major travel management companies, such as those like American Express Global Business Travel, Kazim said. A spokesman for Amex GBT denies any talks took place.

Emirates is even requiring Dnata , which Emirates Group owns and which is one of the Middle East’s largest corporate travel management companies, to access its content via aggregators.

“Dnata isn’t involved in any of these distribution processes that we’re working and developing and doesn’t have a special connection to the content,” Kazim said.

Opportunities for Tech Vendors

Emirates’ distribution shift is creating opportunities for many tech vendors.

Salesforce , a maker of customer relationship management software, provided some key components to support the Emirates Gateway.

“Our in-house IT team built most of the platform along with the help that’s coming from Salesforce.com,” Kazim said.

Salesforce can help Emirates adopt tools beyond its loyalty program to understand its customers better. This work builds on work tech vendor SAP began for Emirates a few years ago — helping the airline track the seat and service treatment individual passengers get. Among other things, Emirates has a custom implementation of a content management system on Salesforce’s community cloud. (For more on Salesforce’s interest in travel, see Skift’s recent story .)

“We’re trying to move away from B2B [business-to-business] thinking to move to the B2C [business-to-consumer] thinking,” Kazim said.

Larger agencies connect to Emirates via its Gateway Direct portal. Tech vendor Accelya ‘s FLX system is supplying the data feed used by agencies for this portal and to orchestrate offer and order management and create dynamic offers. Emirates uses Accelya’s FLX Open Connect, FLX Merchandise, and SPRK products.

Smaller agencies can access Emirates’ content via a certified technology partner. Verteil Technologies , TPConnects , Infiniti Software , and Duffel are some of the vendors the airline has authorized so far.

“As a homegrown brand, we are delighted to partner with Emirates,” said Rajendran Vellapalath, CEO of TPConnects, based in Dubai.

What about the tech giants? A few of the airline groups that introduced surcharges years ago have in the past seven months announced deals involving cooperation with some of the global distribution systems, such as Lufthansa Group signing a December deal with Sabre .

Emirates is in “close dialogue” with the global distribution systems about how they can take part in its new distribution strategy, Kazim said.

Emirates will “extend its outreach” to travel agencies, too.

“The journey that we’re in can’t be one-sided,” Kazim said. “Some things may not be right in the beginning. But it’s our commitment to make sure we give all the backup and support our partners need to get the benefits of the change.”

Exploring Other Ways to Sell Tickets

For a couple of years before the pandemic, Emirates participated in a program called Worldwide where EasyJet sold flights on it and other airlines, such as Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic, with a promise of “seamless” connections with its own flights for baggage transfers and handling delays and cancelations. Dohop, a tech firm in Iceland, ran the program.

Emirates started with connections via London’s Gatwick Airport. It was expanding with connections via Italy’s Milan Airport before the crisis hit.

Emirates has more recently mirrored this so-called virtual interlining closer to home.

It partnered with FlyDubai , a budget airline owned by the gov’t of Dubai, to be part of a similar seamless transfer arrangement at Dubai Airport. It moved FlyDubai’s operations from Terminal 2 to a stretch between Concourse C and part of Terminal 3 to enable a more seamless transfer of luggage between the two carriers.

“You need one platform and one tech solution hosting the whole thing from A to Zed,” Kazim said. “People in today’s world don’t want to be jumping between three different carriers or between different airports or different terminals to complete a trip. You need a seamless approach to the baggage transfer, too.”

“I think the concept could work in different places, but for us, we always believe that once we bring in everything under one platform and make it seamless for the customer, that’s where the success is always biggest,” Kazim said.

UPDATE: This story was updated to include a denial by Amex GBT that talks ever took place with Emirates, despite what the airline’s chief commercial officer Kazim said.

UPDATE: Emirates says it mentioned Amex GBT in the context of the kinds of companies it is talking to, as a hypothetical. That was not made clear by Kazim in the interview.
