6 Tourist Spots Worth Visiting in Alamada, North Cotabato

Alamada is a small town in North Cotabato located in the highlands. It is progressing rather gradually and is now being recognized as one of the tourist capitals of the province. Some years back, Alamada was pretty hard to visit due to unpaved roads that are prone to accidents. Things changed when people learned that behind the treacherous roads of this mountainous town are waterfalls, cold springs, rivers, and stunning views.  Today, Alamada is far from what it used to be. Concrete roads, commercial establishments, and resorts exist alongside its natural spots that people can all enjoy. In this blog, let’s take a look at these 6 beautiful tourist spots in Alamada, North Cotabato.

—1. Asik-Asik Falls

Asik-Asik Falls put the town of Alamada on the map upon its discovery in 2011. The locals call it the miracle falls. According to hearsays, this waterfall was non-existent and only emerged out of nowhere after a destructive flood. Even today, people still wonder where the water from these falls comes from that cascades perfectly like curtains on a rock wall covered in shrubs.  Regardless of its origin, there is no denying its magnificence that kept pulling visitors from different parts of the country and the world.

How to get here: Fly to either Davao or Cotabato then ride a bus going to Libungan. From Libungan, charter a ride to Asik-Asik Falls for P600-P800 for a return trip. Entrance Fee: P30-P50/head Travel Guide:  ASIK-ASIK FALLS: Journey To The Unspoiled Curtain Waterfall In North Cotabato

—2. Salukot Mountain View Resort

One of the newest resorts to emerge in Rangayen, Alamada is Salukot Mountain View Resort. It has infinity springwater pools that both adults and kids can enjoy. Its view deck was built to capture Instagram-worthy moments. Aside from day tour cottages, the resort also has native huts for those who wish to spend the night there.

How to get here: Fly to either Davao or Cotabato then ride a bus going to Libungan. From Libungan, charter a ride to Rangayen for P500-P600 for a return trip. Entrance Fee: P50/head viewing only | P100/head viewing & pool access Travel Guide: SALUKOT MOUNTAIN VIEW & RESORT: Travel Guide & Review

—3. Portalio Coldspring

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Keza | ᴅɪʏ ʙᴜᴅɢᴇᴛ ᴛʀᴀᴠᴇʟ ʙʟᴏɢ (@awanderfulsole)

Portalio Coldspring is one of the newly discovered spots in Alamada. It offers serenity like no other and one of the coldest and clearest waters you’ll ever bathe yourself in. The best part? It’ll only cost you P10 to experience this amazing coldspring.

How to get here: From Libungan, charter a ride and follow the road leading to Asik-Asik Falls. Turn left at the rough road before reaching the Golf Course, just a few meters away passed the cemetery. You can also ask the locals for directions to Sitio Waterpoint. Entrance Fee: P10/head

—4. Daday Falls

Daday Falls is not your average kind of waterfall as it requires a difficult hike along a perilous trail. Anyone who dares to see this magnificent beauty should be prepared to take on its challenge as this stunner is not making things easy one bit.

How to get here: In Libungan, charter a ride (motorcycle) to Brgy. Upper Dado. Just follow the road markers going to Daday Falls. Once you reached a Muslim village, drive straight until the end of the concrete road. You’ll see a dirt road on the right going inside a banana plantation. Just follow that road until you reach the caretaker’s house. Entrance Fee: P200/head Guide Fee (Not required): Starts at P300

—5. Coco’s Funville & Nature Park

Coco’s Funville and Nature Park is set on a vast piece of land overlooking the mountains of North Cotabato. It features a Mid-Century barn, a boating area, and a laidback cafe. It’s also home to several farm livestock and exotic birds. But the best thing to do here is to watch the collision of colors in the skies at sunset while munching popcorn.

How to get here: From Libungan, charter a ride to Rangayen for P500-P600 for a return trip. Entrance Fee: P100/head with free popcorn.

—6. Palepaz Falls

Our visit to Palepaz Falls was probably my favorite trip to Alamada from the drive all the way to the hike. It was a topsyturvy ride from the moment we took the turn to get to the trailhead. Then the hike which I thought was easy turned out to be very challenging but the beautiful scenery along the trail compensated for it. My only regret was being unable to capture the splendor of this waterfall due to heavy rainfall that forced us to vacate the area in a hurry.

How to get here: In Libungan, charter a ride to Brgy. Upper Dado. Take the right turn to the road leading to Palepaz Falls. If you encounter a junction/intersection, just ask the locals as they can point you in the right direction. Entrance Fee: None Guide Fee: Starts at P200

Some Tips in Visiting These Tourist Spots in Alamada, Cotabato

  • Bring your vaccination card and wear a facemask to maintain safety and adhere to health protocols.
  • Some parts of the town especially in the locations of these tourist destinations have spotty signals for all networks.
  • Bring enough cash as you can’t find any ATMs passed the town proper.
  • Don’t forget to bring food and water especially if you’re going to Palepaz and Daday Falls as there are no eateries in these areas.
  • Start your trip early to avoid rains that are pretty common in the afternoons. Bring waterproof bags and raincoats in case you get caught in the downpour.
  • Don’t stay far too late since the roads in the area are poorly lit which makes driving even more dangerous.
  • As always LEAVE NO TRACE and RESPECT the place and the locals.

There you have it, lovelies. I’m quite sure there are still plenty of places I still have to uncover in Alamada. Make sure to follow me on Facebook and Instagram to be the first ones to know of any newly discovered spots I’ll get to visit next. Until next time. Ciao!

Exploring the Beautiful Place of Makilala, North Cotabato

Exploring the Beautiful Place of Makilala, North Cotabato

With a population of 77,508 people as of 2010, Makilala is a 1 st -class municipality in the province of Cotabato in the Philippines. Formerly a barangay named “Lamitan”, it was created by virtue of Executive Order No. 63 issued by the then President Ramon Magsaysay. The name “Makilala” is coined from the names of the early barangays Malasila, Kisante and Lamitan. If you are wondering about the additional “la”, this is to match the Tagalog word that means “to be known”.

Like other places in the country, Makilala also boasts of great things that travelers and holidaymakers would enjoy. If it is included in your itinerary for your next trip, here are some tips to consider:

Tourist Attractions and Landmarks

The foothills of mount apo.

This area, especially the Mt. Apo National Park, contains several waterfalls, which are mostly hidden away in its old-growth forest. However, two of the tallest waterfalls, the Padalagi and the Matibago, are visible from the national highway. As of now, take note that access to these waterfalls are still not tourist-friendly, and you have to do hard trekking to get to them.

Zipline ride. Photo courtesy of makilala.gov.ph

Also situated within the parameters of Mt. Apo National Park, this barangay is elevated 1,600 feet above sea level. It is a starting point for hikers who want to reach the peak of Mt. Apo and is home to a troop of monkeys that are used to interacting with humans. Furthermore, the New Israel Eco Park has the longest zip line.

Sang’ngawan Falls

Found in the neighboring barangay of Batasan, the waterfalls has a collection of hot and cold natural pools that are found along the Malasila river. Its hot sulfuric pools are known for having some healing effects.

Le Reve Resort

Located along the national highway, this is an inland resort that is known for using un-chlorinated spring water that is sourced from Mt. Apo’s foothills.

Don Bosco Youth Camp

This is located in Batasan and is a favorite venue for events, such as conferences, seminars and weddings.

Cajelo and Aurora Camps

These camps are located along the national highway in Barangay Bulatukan and are known as the venues for the province’s annual scouting events.

Other Beautiful Sights

There are many access roads to Makilala’s many barangays, which make for a great mountain biking experience, with varying levels of difficulty.

Specialties

Makilala is known for having specialty food that can certainly satisfy your gastronomic cravings. Aside from some familiar food in the Philippines, such as mongo soup, green mango salad, steamed freshwater prawns or “ulang”, grilled catfish or “hito”, the place is also known for its grilled tuna belly. You can also find fruits that other provinces in Mindanao are popular for, such as durian and mangosteen.

The climatic condition of the municipality is characterized by rainfall that is evenly distributed throughout the year, which means that springs will keep flowing, rivers will be kept alive and farms will keep producing. The slopes of mountains, such as Mt. Libadan, Mt. Niponggis, Mt. Gap and Mt. Apo, serve as rain generators providing a dependable rainfall pattern and cool climate.

How to Get There

Makilala can be accessed from several airports, including the Dugong Airport (which is approximately 27 kilometers away), the Tawitawi Airport (which is approximately 52 kilometers away), the Davao Airport (which is approximately 64 kilometers away), the Surallah Airport (which is approximately 75 kilometers away) and the General Santos Airport (which is approximately 95 kilometers away). Everything you need to know about Asik-asik Falls : Where to Stay, Where to Eat and How to Get There from various routes and modes of transportation.

tourist spots in north cotabato

Asik-Asik Falls is one of my favorite waterfalls in the country. It is very unique compared to the other waterfalls I’ve seen so far. It is enchanting and majestic. It’s a place I want to go back over and over again. The falls is located in the remote area of Barangay Upper Dado in Alamada, North Cotabato. Due to its location, only very few people have visited the place which makes it more charming. [Check out our list of the top tourist spots in North Cotabato ]

How to Go to Asik Asik Falls?

From davao city to asik asik falls, from general santos city, from lake sebu:, from cotabato city, from midsayap to upper dado, alamada.

From Upper Dado to Jump off Point

Upon reaching Upper Dado, you will have to register at the municipal tourism booth and pay P30 entrance fee. Right across the street are tourism-accredited habal-habal which will take you to the jump-off point to Asik Asik Falls. Fare is standard at P75 one-way per passenger for a 30-minute ride. Again this is a standard fee so don’t try to haggle. Once you’re on the road, you’ll understand why it is way high than the usual rate. Brace yourself, it could be the worst habal-habal ride you will experience.

From the Jump-off point to Asik-Asik Falls

Upon reaching the jump-off point, you will be greeted with a scenic landscape. From the pavilion where you may leave your things, you will have to walk through a descending trail until you reach a stairway of about 500 steps. You will have to continue walking for a couple of minutes. It’s only about 30-minute trek or less depending on how fast you walk. Upon reaching Asik-asik Falls, you will be mesmerized by its enchanting beauty. You’ll forget about your stressful road experience. It’s majestic, it’s surreal. Don’t just take photo, experience Asik-Asik by dipping and swimming into its cold waters.

Where to Stay in Midsayap

There are a lot of accommodation in Midsayap but we chose to stay at White Hut Inn Resort . It is about 15 minutes trike ride from the town center. We chose the place as it is far from the busy streets of Midsayap and is relatively safe as it is well guarded. It is also along the national highway so it will be easier for us to move from the hotel to Davao, our next destination. We rented a room good for 4 for only P1200. It was definitely a good deal. The room was clean and huge enough for the 4 of us. There is also a swimming pool in the hotel compound which you can use for an extra fee. You may contact them at 064-229-8630 or mobile number +63 920 5329974 or email them at [email protected] If you decide to take an overnight trip in Alamada, the vendor at the jump-off point, Ate Sally can help you with a place to stay. She has a hut for rent at P500 a night good for 4 persons. You may call her at 09058064501.

Where to Eat in Midsayap

Make sure you buy your food from Midsayap or at least in Barangay Upper Dado after you pay the tourism fee. There are stores that sell bread, pastil (steamed rice with seasoned shredded chicken wrapped in banana leaves) and other food items. Also bring water, as you will surely need it. There is a small store near the jump off point where you could also buy food but it is a bit more expensive considering the road condition when moving goods from the town center to the store. Price maybe expensive but it is of course reasonable.

Cotabato City Tourist Spots

by thepinay solobackpacker | Jun 17, 2013 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

While most tourists avoid Cotabato City due to its disheartening reputation some local travel bloggers brave this blemished beauty.

Cotabato City Grand Mosque photo

Cotabato City Grand Mosque

Although Cotabato City is nestled at the heart of Maguindanao, it is politically independent from the province. Cotabato City is often mistaken as part of the ARMM  (Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao) Region,  but it is actually part of SOCCSKSARGEN Region.

Here’s a list of Cotabato City tourist spots and things to experience in Cotabato City :

  • The Grand Mosque of Cotabato City

The rising star of Cotabato City is undoubtedly the gorgeous Grand Mosque also known as Sultan Hadji Hassanal Bolkiah Masjid , named after the Sultan of Brunei who reportedly helped fund its construction. The walls of the Grand Mosque are painted in white and cream along with its minarets while its domes are pretty in yellow.  It is indeed gigantic, in fact, it can hold up to 800 male and 400 female worshippers. Will write a separate post about the Grand Mosque soon.

How to get to Cotabato City Grand Mosque ( S ultan Hadji Hassanal Bolkiah Masjid):

  • Tamontaka  Church

We had a hard-time locating the Tamontaka Church which is the first Christian church in Cotabato City built in 1872.   This unassuming church can also be found within the city proper.

How to get to Tamontaka Church :

This church can be reached by foot from Sinsuat Avenue, if you’re staying at Hotel Filipino, some of the attractions in Cotabato City are just walking distance. Or your can just hop on a tricycle to take you to Tamontaka Church.

  • Local Dishes

On top of exploring  Cotabato City tourist spots, you can also feast on traditional food here. Try eating at one of the halal eateries and order beef sinina.  Barbecue stalls selling pastel also abound in the streets, this sticky rice with mashed beef or chicken inside is a popular food in this lively city.

  • Barter Trade Center

On our way to the Grand Mosque, we dropped by at Governor Gutierrez Street to scout for some souvenirs at the Barter Trade Center.   The immediate exchange of commodities such as silk, porcelain, spices and other products was once a cultural practice of our ancestors when trading with foreign merchants such the Chinese and the Malays back in the days.  Today, barter trade is no longer observed in the country but the Barter  Trade  Center in Cotabato  City is still worth a visit because of the abundance of goods at reasonable prices. Whether you want to take home silk, brassware, original hand crafted Maranao products, hijab, batiks, malong  and inaul , you can find it at the Barter Trade Center.

  • Al Jamela Weaving Center

Pay a visit to Al Jamela Weaving Center where you see the actual weaving process of inaul , the traditional hand-woven textile of Maguindanao. Support the local industry by  buying some fabrics as souvenirs.

Brassware is a pride of the Maguindanaons, and CotabatoCity is a well-known supplier and producer of this product. To witness an actual brass-making process, rush to Brgy. Kalangalan.

  •   The Old and the New City Hall

Cotabato City’s old city hall is situated in front of the plaza at the city proper and is now the haven of Philippine Marines.  It is painted in white and has a lovely Islamic architecture.  A massive Cotabatao City New City Hall also called People’s Palace can be found on the road to the Grand Mosque at Malagpas.

How to get to the Cotabato Old City Hall:

Ride a tricycle to take you here, but since we stayed at Hotel Filipino, this is just across our place.

How to get to Cotabato City New City Hall:

Ride a multi-cab or jeep bound for Awang. Tell the driver you will get off at the People’s Palace.

  •   Sultan Kudarat Monument

At Pedro Colina Hill along Sinsuat Avenue, we came across the mighty golden statue  of  Sultan Kudarat, a brave Filipino hero who hails from Mindanao and is famous for having successfully opposed the Spanish colonization and hindered the Christianization of  their land.

  • Kuta Wato Cave

A few meters from Pedro Colina Hill, you can find Kuta Wato, it is  reputed to be the only cave in the Philippines located in the heart of the city.  It plays an important part in our history as it is believed to be a hide-out of the Japanese soldiers during World War II.  Unfortunately, today, it  its cavern  need some tender-loving care.

How to get to Kuwato Cave:

You can just hail a motorbike to take you here from the Sultan Kudarat Monument. Just  ask permission from the police and marines at the gate of the village before entering the premise.

  •   Al Nor  Restaurant Complex

Situated at Sinsuat Avenue, below the modern building of Al Nor Hotel is a chain of restaurants where delicious seafood is typically served.  It is also a popular place for hanging out at night.

There’s certainly more in Cotabato City that we failed to discover, and I will not think twice to revisit this blemished beauty and its neighboring territories in the future.
