Asik-Asik Falls of Alamada: A Worthy Adventure in North Cotabato

Asik-Asik Falls

The once undisturbed town of Alamada in the highland of North Cotabato is now a booming tourist destination. Thanks to the majestic Asik-Asik Falls for a promise of a brighter tourism landscape for this part of Mindanao.

Asik-Asik Falls

Asik-Asik Falls or Dulao Falls for the locals is situated in Sitio Dulao of Barangay Upper Dado in Alamada, North Cotabato. It is nested in the lower slope of Mount Ragang, also called as Mount Piapayungan or Blue Mountain, an active strato-volcano that sits in the boundary of Lanao del Sur and North Cotabato.

There are various tales and side stories of the discovery of this natural wonder. Some say that it was accidentally discovered by military during a clearing operations while others say that locals already know the place ever since. The latter seems more true and probable. A beauty of such grandeur is impossible to have gone unnoticed. The locals probably just kept it as secret or ignored it thinking it was just a normal scene.

Asik-Asik Falls

But more than its captivating splendor, Asik-Asik Falls is a unique phenomenon. You won’t see a river or a stream above the towering wall. The cold water emanates from the spring covered by rocks and lush vegetation, cascading into a 60-meter high wall carpeted with variety of foliage, mostly ferns and moss. At approximately 140-meter wide, it visually looks like a green curtain of cascading water! The water then drops to a shallow rocky pool below before flowing into a stream tributary of Alamada River.

Asik-Asik Falls

There is no easy way of going to Asik-Asik Falls. One must endure more than half-an-hour of bumpy motorbike ride and climb down the 376-stone steps before getting rewarded with the awe-inspiring work of nature. Mind you, the hardship is all worth it!

How to Get to Asik-Asik Falls

The nearest airport would be Cotabato City. From there, make your way to the town of Midsayap in North Cotabato.  There are vans as early as 6AM and as late as 5PM from Cotabato City going to Midsayap, travel time is at most one-and-a-half hour and fare is P60.

Asik-Asik Falls

From Midsayap, you can either charter a habal-habal or motorbike for as low as P700 straight to Asik-Asik Falls (1.5 hours) and back , or take a jeep to Dado (2.5 hours, P70 per person) and transfer to another motorbike or skylab to Asik-Asik Falls (30 minutes, P75 per person). While the latter is the cheapest option, the former is the fastest and most convenient specially for those with time constraints.

If you choose to hire a motorbike from Midsayap, it is ideal to have only one passenger per motorbike due to the condition of the road. If you need a contact, please get in touch with Janjan, he charged me P700 for the round trip. Contact number:  +639305519760 or +639756918055 , say hi to him for me. 🙂

Asik-Asik Falls

Alternatively, you can take a van or jeep from Midsayap to Alamada Town Proper and charter a motorbike from there. The usual rate is P300, one way.

When to Visit Asik-Asik Falls

All year round! Rainfall in this area is evenly distributed throughout the year. The best time is in the early morning, as early as 630AM, before the crowd swells in. If you are coming from Midsayap and taking a direct motorbike as I did, leave as early as 5AM.

Asik-Asik Falls

Where to Stay in Midsayap

It is ideal to spend a night in either Libungan or Midsayap if you decide to visit Asik-Asik Falls in the early morning. If you are staying in Midsayap, White Hut Resort has budget fan room with own toilet and bath for as low as P300, good for two. Meanwhile, aircon room starts at P500. White Hut Resort is located along the national highway near the main junction, contact number +639205329974 .

Everything you need to know about Asik-asik Falls : Where to Stay, Where to Eat and How to Get There from various routes and modes of transportation.

tourist spots in north cotabato

Asik-Asik Falls is one of my favorite waterfalls in the country. It is very unique compared to the other waterfalls I’ve seen so far. It is enchanting and majestic. It’s a place I want to go back over and over again. The falls is located in the remote area of Barangay Upper Dado in Alamada, North Cotabato. Due to its location, only very few people have visited the place which makes it more charming. [Check out our list of the top tourist spots in North Cotabato ]

How to Go to Asik Asik Falls?

From davao city to asik asik falls, from general santos city, from lake sebu:, from cotabato city, from midsayap to upper dado, alamada.

From Upper Dado to Jump off Point

Upon reaching Upper Dado, you will have to register at the municipal tourism booth and pay P30 entrance fee. Right across the street are tourism-accredited habal-habal which will take you to the jump-off point to Asik Asik Falls. Fare is standard at P75 one-way per passenger for a 30-minute ride. Again this is a standard fee so don’t try to haggle. Once you’re on the road, you’ll understand why it is way high than the usual rate. Brace yourself, it could be the worst habal-habal ride you will experience.

From the Jump-off point to Asik-Asik Falls

Upon reaching the jump-off point, you will be greeted with a scenic landscape. From the pavilion where you may leave your things, you will have to walk through a descending trail until you reach a stairway of about 500 steps. You will have to continue walking for a couple of minutes. It’s only about 30-minute trek or less depending on how fast you walk. Upon reaching Asik-asik Falls, you will be mesmerized by its enchanting beauty. You’ll forget about your stressful road experience. It’s majestic, it’s surreal. Don’t just take photo, experience Asik-Asik by dipping and swimming into its cold waters.

Where to Stay in Midsayap

There are a lot of accommodation in Midsayap but we chose to stay at White Hut Inn Resort . It is about 15 minutes trike ride from the town center. We chose the place as it is far from the busy streets of Midsayap and is relatively safe as it is well guarded. It is also along the national highway so it will be easier for us to move from the hotel to Davao, our next destination. We rented a room good for 4 for only P1200. It was definitely a good deal. The room was clean and huge enough for the 4 of us. There is also a swimming pool in the hotel compound which you can use for an extra fee. You may contact them at 064-229-8630 or mobile number +63 920 5329974 or email them at [email protected] If you decide to take an overnight trip in Alamada, the vendor at the jump-off point, Ate Sally can help you with a place to stay. She has a hut for rent at P500 a night good for 4 persons. You may call her at 09058064501.

Where to Eat in Midsayap

Make sure you buy your food from Midsayap or at least in Barangay Upper Dado after you pay the tourism fee. There are stores that sell bread, pastil (steamed rice with seasoned shredded chicken wrapped in banana leaves) and other food items. Also bring water, as you will surely need it. There is a small store near the jump off point where you could also buy food but it is a bit more expensive considering the road condition when moving goods from the town center to the store. Price maybe expensive but it is of course reasonable.

MATIGOL FALLS: Travel Guide to a Beautiful Adventure in North Cotabato

There are a handful of places in North Cotabato that I have dreamt of visiting but I have always been hesitant. Matigol Falls is one of them, not because of safety concerns but because I have often heard people say how difficult it is to explore. I’ve already scaled several mountains and explored many waterfalls but Matigol Falls never cease to intimidate me. So when I finally summoned the courage to go for a visit, I wasted no time and took my chance but what I found out was completely baffling. Read on to know my amazing experience in Matigol Falls and how it’s completely the opposite of what I perceived it would be like.

OUR HIKE TO MATIGOL FALLS

Our initial plan was to explore Matigol Falls on a Sunday but because Pani (my travel buddy/cousin) and I were both hungover, we arrived in Arakan, sick and vomiting our insides from a 5-hour trip from Midsayap at 1 PM. We decided to rest it out in a nearby inn and postpone the hike for the following morning.  Our first day in Arakan was pretty uneventful as we spent most of our time sleeping and checking out some great ukay-ukay (pre-loved) finds.

The next morning, we left the inn at 6 AM to have a quick breakfast at an eatery nearby. The ride to Matigol Falls began at 6:30 AM through a concrete road that was a series of steep uphills and treacherous downhills with sharp curves in between. Also, a part of the ride was through an unpaved road so expect it to be a bit nerve-wracking. Although the ride only took less than 30 minutes, it was already enough to get us all pumped up for the adventure to come.

Arriving in Brgy. Matigol, we were ushered to the receiving area where we were briefed a little and paid the corresponding fees. Soon after, we started the hike. We covered a 500-meter uneventful hike until the end of the concrete road. We then shifted to a dirt path leading down to the falls. The downhill was pretty steep but it wasn’t anything difficult. I just had to watch my steps to prevent myself from tripping due to loose earth.

The scenery was really spectacular that it took my mind away from the hike. I hate downhills as they can take a lot of toll on my knees so I could use a little distraction. We also passed by several houses and exchanged smiles with the locals who were very welcoming. Ten minutes into the hike and I already had a glimpse of Matigol Falls. Its water cascading from the top of the hill to an unknown bottom was mesmerizing. It was such a beautiful sight the kind that made me wonder what it feels like to visit every tier where the water seems to have made natural pools.

From steep downhills, we shifted to a short uphill climb to the view deck. There we witness Matigol Falls in its full glory. We rested our knees a bit and took time to catch some air. The sun was already above the skies and the day was getting hotter by the minute. After getting our much-needed rest, we took photos of Matigol Falls and then picked up the hike.

We descended the same trail in going up the view deck to go back to the trail leading down to the base of Matigol Falls. There, we encountered a few parts that were a little hard to navigate but they were not that challenging. Soon after, we reached the base of Matigol Falls and basked in the otherwordly scenery in front of us. The base tier looks the most formidable of all. It’s where the water flows out to a rocky stream. Its catch basin is kind of out of sight and a fallen log obstructed the path to it so I didn’t pursue it anymore.

We started ascending back to the top of Matigol Falls after 15 minutes. This is where the difficult part began. The entire trail was very steep and included a 90-degree scrambling on rocks that stretched to about 15-20 meters. After that, there wasn’t any room for our knees to rest as the steep uphills have gone on for what felt like an eternity.

I like that I finally got to experience the beating that Matigol Falls has in store for its visitors. It was very challenging but I enjoyed it, especially because every difficult part led to every tier of this magnificent falls which served as our delightful reward. Our hike back to the top tier took almost two hours and there we experienced a bit of rock climbing, river crossing, and hopping from one cliff to another. The trail was pretty unforgiving but it was the kind that would make you craving for more.

When we reached the top tier where the natural pools abound, we decided to stay there for a little while. It was a little past the hour of 11 AM on my watch and I wasn’t at all in a hurry. The midday sun was scorchingly hot against my skin but the spring water was very refreshing. I spent about 30-45 minutes getting enough of the goodness of Matigol Falls while my companions dozed off. I smirked and wonder, “How could they even have the strength to sleep through the beauty that was in front of us?” Mind-boggling.

  • Camping near Matigol Falls is a better choice if you would like to stay overnight. It offers stunning views and the campground is spacious. There are also kubo being rented out for P500/night which can accommodate up to 5 people.
  • A guide is required to explore Matigol Falls and the guide fee is P300 for a group of 5.
  • You can choose between the long and short trails when exploring Matigol Falls. I suggest you take the long trail as it is an easy trek down to the base then use the short trail to go back to the top.

Exploring the Beautiful Place of Makilala, North Cotabato

Exploring the Beautiful Place of Makilala, North Cotabato

With a population of 77,508 people as of 2010, Makilala is a 1 st -class municipality in the province of Cotabato in the Philippines. Formerly a barangay named “Lamitan”, it was created by virtue of Executive Order No. 63 issued by the then President Ramon Magsaysay. The name “Makilala” is coined from the names of the early barangays Malasila, Kisante and Lamitan. If you are wondering about the additional “la”, this is to match the Tagalog word that means “to be known”.

Like other places in the country, Makilala also boasts of great things that travelers and holidaymakers would enjoy. If it is included in your itinerary for your next trip, here are some tips to consider:

Tourist Attractions and Landmarks

The foothills of mount apo.

This area, especially the Mt. Apo National Park, contains several waterfalls, which are mostly hidden away in its old-growth forest. However, two of the tallest waterfalls, the Padalagi and the Matibago, are visible from the national highway. As of now, take note that access to these waterfalls are still not tourist-friendly, and you have to do hard trekking to get to them.

Also situated within the parameters of Mt. Apo National Park, this barangay is elevated 1,600 feet above sea level. It is a starting point for hikers who want to reach the peak of Mt. Apo and is home to a troop of monkeys that are used to interacting with humans. Furthermore, the New Israel Eco Park has the longest zip line.

Sang’ngawan Falls

Found in the neighboring barangay of Batasan, the waterfalls has a collection of hot and cold natural pools that are found along the Malasila river. Its hot sulfuric pools are known for having some healing effects.

Le Reve Resort

Located along the national highway, this is an inland resort that is known for using un-chlorinated spring water that is sourced from Mt. Apo’s foothills.

Don Bosco Youth Camp

This is located in Batasan and is a favorite venue for events, such as conferences, seminars and weddings.

Cajelo and Aurora Camps

These camps are located along the national highway in Barangay Bulatukan and are known as the venues for the province’s annual scouting events.

Other Beautiful Sights

There are many access roads to Makilala’s many barangays, which make for a great mountain biking experience, with varying levels of difficulty.

Specialties

Makilala is known for having specialty food that can certainly satisfy your gastronomic cravings. Aside from some familiar food in the Philippines, such as mongo soup, green mango salad, steamed freshwater prawns or “ulang”, grilled catfish or “hito”, the place is also known for its grilled tuna belly. You can also find fruits that other provinces in Mindanao are popular for, such as durian and mangosteen.

The climatic condition of the municipality is characterized by rainfall that is evenly distributed throughout the year, which means that springs will keep flowing, rivers will be kept alive and farms will keep producing. The slopes of mountains, such as Mt. Libadan, Mt. Niponggis, Mt. Gap and Mt. Apo, serve as rain generators providing a dependable rainfall pattern and cool climate.

How to Get There

Makilala can be accessed from several airports, including the Dugong Airport (which is approximately 27 kilometers away), the Tawitawi Airport (which is approximately 52 kilometers away), the Davao Airport (which is approximately 64 kilometers away), the Surallah Airport (which is approximately 75 kilometers away) and the General Santos Airport (which is approximately 95 kilometers away). From these terminals, you can take several options on land transportation to Makilala, including taxis, car rentals and public utility vehicles.

Cotabato covers a total area of 9,008.90 square kilometers (3,478.36 sq mi) occupying the northeastern tip of Region XII and is centrally located in Mindanao. It is bounded on the north by the provinces of Lanao del Sur and Bukidnon, on the east by Davao City and Davao del Norte, on the west by Maguindanao and on the southeast by Sultan Kudarat and Davao del Sur.

Cotabato is strategically linked to the major “Arterial Road System” that traverses and connects the province to Davao City – SOCCSKSARGEN – Cotabato Corridor. The Cotabato via Kabacan – Maramag – Kibawe, Bukidnon Sayre Highway meanwhile serves as its link to the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan City Corridor.

Cotabato stretches from the east at Mount Apo, which separates it from Davao, to the Piapayungan Range on its boundary with Lanao in the west. Between these highlands is the basin of the Pulangi River or Rio Grande de Mindanao, the second longest in the Philippines at 373 kilometers (232 mi), which rises in Bukidnon and flows south to Maguindanao and Illana Bay. The province’s fertile plains are traversed by tributaries of this great river.  Read More:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotabato
