Isla Contoy Tour Tips

Birds on the Contoy Island

Visiting Isla Contoy is an amazing experience. Only 200 people a day are allowed to visit, and the beaches are pristine.

The government works hard to preserve the island because it is home to so many different bird species. Here are a few tips to enjoy your trip to Isla Contoy.

► Book early! The government limits how many people can visit the island each day. There are not very many tour operators who have permits to visit the island, so you need to book your tour early.

In the high season, this tour will sell out. Make sure to book early to guarantee there is space for you!

► Bring cash. You will want cash for tipping guides throughout the day. There is a $15 docking fee at Isla Contoy.

Many tours do not include this fee in the tour price, so you will need cash to pay it.

► Prevent SeaSickness . The water is usually calm, but it is always a good idea to avoid drinking the night before and eat light before getting on a boat.

Most tours stop at Isla Mujeres in addition to Isla Contoy, and nothing will ruin your day faster than feeling seasick.

► Respect the rules. Isla Contoy is a special place, and it is important all visitors respect the rules to keep it pristine.

How to be a responsible traveler on Isla Contoy

Isla Contoy Tour Review

Here, I’ll review each step of the tour so you know what to expect when you set off.

Pickup From the Dock

I’ll start by mentioning that it’s fairly common for tours to include hotel pickup. This one does not. The meeting point is behind La Perla Negra (The Black Pearl), a shopping center in the downtown area of Isla Mujeres.

If you’re staying in the downtown area, this won’t be a big deal. If you’re staying elsewhere on the Island though, you’ll need to plan for a taxi to the meeting point.

It’s also worth noting that if you’re staying in Cancun, get in touch with the tour company beforehand and let them know. They can usually make arrangements to pick you up at a dock in Cancun on the way.

View from the dock on Isla Contoy looking towards the beach

This is where the tour company will take attendance and settle any outstanding balances (it’s possible to book with a deposit). It’s also the last chance for you to put on sunblock. More on that in a moment.

The Journey To the Island

The boat ride to the Island is a short one. It’s 18 miles (30 km) away from Isla Mujeres. The ride takes about 30-40 minutes.

During the ride, you’ll learn about Isla Contoy and be told the regulations that help protect the national reserve. These regulations include not using sunscreen after boarding the boat.

The guides will explain to you that the chemicals in the sunblock can negatively affect the marine life around the island. This isn’t just a recommendation or request.

If the Park Rangers catch anyone using sunscreen, they’ll escort you back to your boat where you’ll have to wait for the remainder of the trip.

The guides and Park Rangers are also very strict about littering. Drinks in glass bottles are not permitted on the island. If you have one from the boat, you can ask for a cup to pour it into.

Contoy Island!

Arriving on Contoy Island is like a scene from a movie where the cast travels to a magical paradise island that seems like a dream location. Well, it’s not a dream!

View of the secluded beach of Isla Contoy

Our tour group was the first to arrive on the island, so the arrival was extra special. I asked the guides if it’s always like that and they said sometimes they get beat but their company is usually the first to arrive on the island.

When you get off the boat, you’ll have some time to find a spot on the beach and get some sun, or get in the ocean and enjoy the clear water. Swimming in the water on a secluded beach like this feels great!

Optional Contoy Island Walking Tour

I recommend taking this walking tour around the island. It’s a beautiful island and I recommend seeing more than just the beach.

I opted to go with the Spanish-speaking group, even though my Spanish is intermediate because I like the idea of immersion. Because of that though, I didn’t get a lot of the intricate details about the flora and fauna.

View towards the beach during a walking tour of the Island

I tried. It was making sense at the time, but recounting it now seems like an impossible task. What I can tell you is that it was beautiful and gave me some of the best pictures from my whole trip.

Mayan Buffet Lunch

Let me start off by saying I scoped out what some of the people were eating that came with other tour groups, and our selection was way better!

The dishes served will likely vary over the course of the year, but this day we were served fish, chicken, a hot pasta dish, salad, a cold noodle salad, bread, and rice pudding. They offered lemonade, a variety of sodas or water, and even beer.

I didn’t mention it before, but the beers are included in the price of the ticket!

Isla Contoy Snorkeling

When the Isla Contoy tour leaves the island, you’ll have the option to snorkel along the second-biggest coral reef in the world. The biggest of course is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

A lot of people don’t know that the next largest reef is right off the coast of Cancun between Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres.

View from the dock of the clear calm waters surrounding Isla Contoy

I opted not to do this part of the activity. I’m not a strong swimmer, at all. The guides explained that the current is very strong along the reef and recommended that only experienced snorkelers and strong swimmers do the activity.

From the boat I could see one swimmer kicking and paddling for his life and not moving at all because of the current, so I was glad I opted out of it, as awesome as it surely is.

I wanted to save myself the embarrassment of having to be dragged back to the boat by the guide who was half my size.

If you’re a strong swimmer, I’d definitely say go for it. Everyone who did it was exhausted but said it was really cool!

Isla Contoy Experience Overall Review

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of this tour, shall we?

  • Guides spoke Spanish, English, and French!
  • First arrival to Isla Contoy
  • Beer was included in the price
  • Best quality food of all the tour groups I observed
  • No pickup directly from the hotel
  • Restriction on reapplying sunblock (this is for all the tours, but it can be a con if you’re pasty like me)

If you’re wondering where the other cons are, there really weren’t any. It was a splendid tour. I did get pretty burned due to the sunscreen restriction, but there isn’t really a way around that without breaking the rules.

I’d advise you to wait until they’re about ready to board the boat, then apply a generous amount of sunblock. It’s all you can really do.

A beautiful and secluded beach, a hidden gem in Mexico

Don’t let the lack of hotel pickup deter you either. It’s a small thing that just adds a little walk or short taxi ride to the beginning and end of the trip.

Overall, the tour was amazing!

The guides and the boat captain were very nice, informative, and entertaining along the way. Everything was very organized and went off without a hitch. This company knows how to pull off a high-quality experience!

Where To Stay On Isla Mujeres

For your tour, you’ll want to be in the downtown area of Isla Mujeres, but if not, it’s not a deal breaker. Liking your hotel, hostel, or resort is more important than the area.

I’ve scouted and prepared the three best options for you depending on the budget you’ve decided on for your trip.

CONTOY ISLAND TOUR – OVERVIEW

Before going through the best Isla Contoy tour experiences, let’s discuss the essentials, such as the location, what to bring on the tour, and everything in between.

WHERE IS ISLA CONTOY?

Isla Contoy is a small island located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, about 18 miles north of Isla Mujeres.

The island is nestled at the meeting point of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

It’s an hour’s catamaran ride from the marina north of Cancun’s hotel zone.

HOW TO GET TO CONTOY ISLAND?

It’s important to note that the only way to get to Contoy Island is by joining a tour or taking a boat from Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, or Isla Mujeres.

There are plenty of tours available, which often combine a snorkeling session or a visit to Isla Mujeres , which is on the way from Cancun and Playa Del Carmen.

isla contoy tour, contoy island, isla contoy excursion, contoy island tours, best isla contoy tours

CAN YOU VISIT CONTOY ISLAND WITHOUT A TOUR?

No, the only way to travel to Contoy Island is with a tour company. Due to the limited number of arrivals allowed each day, you won’t be able to travel there on your own.

Contoy Island is a protected natural reserve, and as such, visitors are required to book a guided tour with one of the certified operators.

BEST TIME TO VISIT ISLA CONTOY?

While Isla Contoy is a great destination year-round, weather-wise, January to April, as well as November and December, are the best months to visit.

Keep in mind that the wettest months are June, September, and October, so you won’t have the best visibility when snorkeling.

WHAT TO PACK FOR CONTOY ISLAND?

Packing is key to a successful trip, and let’s start by saying that sunscreen and bug repellent aren’t allowed on the island, so you’ll have to apply them before taking the boat.

In addition, I recommend packing the following:

  • Change of clothes
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Sunglasses, a towel, a hat
  • Some cash to pay the entrance fee (USD $10)

In case, you’re prone to seasickness, consider packing some Dramamine for the boat ride.

Isla Contoy Tour Mexico: Ultimate Guide for 2024

' src=

Visiting Mexico and interested in the Isla Contoy tour? You’ve come to the right guide!

As a travel blogger that lives in nearby Playa del Carmen , I’ve personally been on the Isla Contoy tour and can tell you that it’s a truly unforgettable experience!

In fact, it’s one of my all time favorite tours in Riviera Maya and one of the prettiest beaches I’ve ever seen!

In this post, I’m sharing everything you need to know about the Isla Contoy tour , including the best one to book, detailed itinerary information, and top tips for taking the tour.

This Isla Contoy tour guide will give you an idea of what to expect, what to bring, and how to make the most of your visit.

Ready to find out if the Isla Contoy tour is right for you? Let’s get started!

What’s the Best Isla Contoy Tour?

My top recommendation for the best Isla Contoy tour is this Beach Escape: Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres Tour .

With over 440 5-star reviews, this is the top rated Isla Contoy tour that will take you to the island, as well as a stop on Isla Mujeres.

It also includes guided reef snorkeling on the way to the island, as well as a light breakfast, and a full lunch.

Plus, round-trip transportation with pickup from hotels in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Riviera Maya is included for a hassle-free trip!

Palm trees on the beach at Isla Contoy

Isla Contoy: Quick Overview

Next, let’s go over some of the basics on Isla Contoy:

Where is Isla Contoy?

Isla Contoy (Contoy Island) is located just off the coast of Cancun, Mexico about 30 km north of Isla Mujeres in the Caribbean Sea.

At only 5 miles (8.5 km) in length, the small island is very remote with only a few man-made structures.

Isla Contoy also marks the start of the Mesoamerican reef system , which is the second longest barrier reef system in the world and spans over 600 miles south all the way to Honduras.

Why visit Isla Contoy Mexico?

Isla Contoy is a highly protected island that is home to over 150 bird species and exotic wildlife, as well as sea turtles and other marine animals, making it the perfect destination for nature lovers.

In order to minimize the human impact, only 200 visitors are allowed to visit the tiny island each day.

Because the island is preserved from mass tourism, it is one of the more exclusive things to do in Riviera Maya offering the unique opportunity to experience an untouched Mexican Caribbean paradise.

Basically if you want to see one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, then visiting Isla Contoy will not disappoint!

A boat docked next to the beach at the entrance to Isla Contoy

How to Get to Isla Contoy

Isla Contoy can only be visited by boat and cannot be reached on your own.

The only way to get there is by booking a tour which will take you to Isla Contoy, in addition to stops at nearby Isla Mujeres and snorkeling at Ixlache reef.

If you’re staying in Playa del Carmen or the Riviera Maya, the tour will begin with a ground transfer to the marina in Cancun.

From there, you’ll board the boat to take you to the tour destinations.

Rules for visiting Isla Contoy

Isla Contoy is a protected island by the Mexican government so there are a few rules you must abide by when visiting this natural reserve:

  • No sunscreen (not even biodegradable)

Pickup and transfer to Cancun

The Isla Contoy boat tour begins with an early pick-up at your hotel between 7:00-8:00AM.

If you’re staying at an AirBnB or VRBO , then they will likely give you a designated pickup point.

We arrived early to the pickup point and our driver was already there waiting for us!

After departing Playa del Carmen, it is a little over an hour’s drive to the marina in Cancun. This is a good time to catch up on sleep if you’re able.

Punta Sam Marina (Cancun)

Once you arrive to the Punta Sam marina in Cancun, you will enter a private terminal where you’ll have breakfast while you’re waiting to board the boat.

It is a continental breakfast that consists of muffins, cookies, cake, fruit, coffee, and juice. Additional breakfast items like yogurt and sports drinks can be purchased for an additional cost.

In the terminal, there are also restrooms and a small gift shop, where you can buy sunscreen, insect repellent, and some souvenirs.

You’ll have about an hour in the terminal to eat breakfast and get everyone boarded on the boat.

Rocks next the Punta Sam Marina

Isla Mujeres

After departing Cancun, it is about a 20 minute boat ride over to Isla Mujeres. On the way, you’ll be able to see some of the most unbelievably turquoise water and passing yachts and catamarans.

Once you arrive to Isla Mujeres, you only have about 1 hour to explore the island. That’s not a lot of time so I would suggest planning out what you want to do beforehand.

I personally made a beeline for Playa Norte , which is about a 10 minute walk from the ferry and the most beautiful beach on the island.

Other things to do on Isla Mujeres include souvenir shopping, grabbing a bite to eat or drink, or exploring the downtown area. You’ll then return to the meeting point to set sail for Isla Contoy.

Travelista Tip:  One hour is not much time to really get to explore Isla Mujeres so I would highly recommend returning to Isla Mujeres on a day trip !

Fishing boats floating on the water in Isla Mujeres

After departing Isla Mujeres, you’ll be en route to Isla Contoy and the next stop will be snorkeling at the Ixlaché reef.

Snorkel equipment including masks, fins, and disposable snorkel tubes will be provided.

The group will be divided into a few different groups and you will set out with a certified guide to snorkel around the coral reefs.

We got to see a good amount of tropical fish and colorful coral reefs, but the Isla Contoy snorkeling wasn’t super impressive (at least on the day we went).

Me wearing a snorkel mask and life jacket during Isla Contoy snorkeling

Isla Contoy

After snorkeling, it’s just a short ride over to Isla Contoy, which is where the real magic happens!

As you are arriving, you will be absolutely floored by the tropical beach views straight out of a movie scene 😍

Calm turquoise water, white sand beaches, and lush tropical palm trees eagerly await as you disembark the boat. You’ll want to get your camera ready!

Because the number of visitors is restricted, we were the only tour boat on the island at the time, which is such a unique opportunity to experience an untouched natural paradise.

The view as you arrive to Isla Contoy

Once you get to the island, you’ll head to a pavilion for a lunch buffet, which was actually better than expected.

I was pretty famished so I forgot to take pictures but the food options consist of salad, fresh Tikinxic fish (straight out the ocean), lasagna, pasta salad, chips, bread, and rice pudding for dessert.

Travelista Tip:  While eating, be on the lookout for a few tropical island critters like crabs and iguanas.

Leisure Time

After a delicious lunch, you are free to explore the island at leisure. Basically you can stay at the beach, check out the small museum in the visitor center, or go on a guided tour of the island to check out the birds and wildlife.

We were so in love with the beach that we couldn’t be bothered to leave! It is such an unbelievably tranquil natural setting with calm, crystal clear waters, tropical palms, and only occupied by the other people on the tour.

It’s definitely a relaxing retreat compared to the often crowded beaches in Playa del Carmen .

Isla Contoy beach and palm trees

Return to Playa del Carmen

After you depart Isla Contoy, it is about an hour boat ride from Isla Contoy back to Cancun. This is a great time to enjoy some drinks and golden hour hues!

After you arrive in Cancun, you’ll board the vans waiting there to take you back to Playa del Carmen.

It’s a little over an hour ride and they’ll drop you off in the reverse order that they picked you up. You’ll likely be exhausted after an adventurous day in the sun!

What to Bring on the Isla Contoy Tour

Here are a few must-have items I would definitely recommend bringing on the tour and a few items that would be nice to have:

  • Biodegradable sunscreen : Any time you are going to be swimming in the ocean, it is so important to bring biodegradable sunscreen to protect and preserve the coral reefs. While sunscreen is not allowed at Isla Contoy, you are still allowed to use biodegradable sunscreen while you are at Isla Mujeres and for the snorkeling portion of the tour. You can pickup my favorite brand on Amazon here .
  • Beach towel: Don’t forget to bring a beach towel to dry off after you get out of the water. These microfiber beach towels are a great option because they are super light weight and dry quickly between the multiple stops on the tour.
  • Insect Repellent : When we first arrived to Cancun, the gift shop attendants told us we would need insect repellent as the mosquitos are very bad on Isla Contoy. I didn’t really believe them but reluctantly purchased some for the trip. However, I’ll admit the bugs were out in full force on Isla Contoy so I would definitely recommend bringing some bug spray with you.

Nice to Have

  • GoPro or waterproof camera : I would highly recommend bringing a GoPro or waterproof camera to capture your snorkeling and beach experience. I always bring my GoPro and am constantly amazed by the picture quality.
  • Snorkel Set : If you’re concerned about comfort or cleanliness, you can always bring your own snorkel set instead of using the one provided on the tour. My snorkel set didn’t fit me very well and I was wishing I had my own to ensure the best fit.
  • Rash guard : I would also recommend bringing a rash guard , which is like a swim shirt to stay warm and also protect you from the sun without the need for sunscreen. Sunscreen is not allowed on Isla Contoy so a rash guard is a Mexico travel essential if you need sun protection.

A boat docked at Isla Contoy

What to Wear on the Isla Contoy Tour

Here is what I would recommend wearing on the Isla Contoy tour:

  • Swimsuit: Whenever I go on snorkeling tours, I usually always wear a one-piece swimsuit . It’s just so much more comfortable and provides much more coverage when you’re dealing with your life jackets, putting on your snorkel gear, and getting in and out of the boat.
  • Swimsuit coverup : You’ll also want to wear a lightweight swimsuit coverup or shorts that can be easily removed when you’re ready to get in the water.
  • Flip flops : You’ll want to wear flip flops or waterproof sandals that can be removed easily when you’re snorkeling. The tour guides will also dump water on your feet to wash off the sand before getting back on the boat.
  • Sun hat : I would also recommend wearing a sun hat but makes sure you have one that fits very securely on your head as the wind can be strong on the boat. It’s also great to have when you’re on the beach at Isla Contoy to protect your face and shoulders from the sun.
  • Change of clothes : You’ll also want to bring a change of clothes so you can change out of your wet swimsuit before the ride back to your hotel or resort.

Isla Contoy Tour Tips

Here are a few tips for Isla Contoy tours from my experience:

  • Book in advance : I actually made the mistake of trying to book this tour the evening before and while I was able to book online, I quickly received a phone call that the tour was booked and needed to change my tour date. I would highly recommend booking online in advance to reserve your spot. There’s a 24-hour cancellation policy so it’s easy to cancel or reschedule if needed.
  • Book a private tour if you have a larger group : If you have a larger group (5+ people), I would highly recommend booking private tour to Isla Contoy . It’s actually not that much more expensive when split among the group and would be totally epic!
  • Bring bug spray: The mosquitos are seriously intense on Isla Contoy so be sure to bring some bug spray to avoid bug bites.
  • Bring biodegradable sunscreen : As I mentioned, don’t forget to bring biodegradable sunscreen . It’s absolutely essential if you need sun protection.
  • Bring sun protection: All types of sunscreen are prohibited on Isla Contoy so make sure to bring some sun protection like a sun hat , sunglasses , or rash guard to wear on the island. Otherwise you’ll be roasting or have to stay in the shade!
  • Bring cash for tips : This is something I often forget then feel terrible when I don’t any cash on hand to tip the tour guides. Make sure to bring some extra cash (dollars or pesos) to give the tour guides a little something extra. They work hard to deliver great experiences.

🇲🇽 Traveling to Mexico soon?

These are the Mexico travel resources I use and recommend:

🏨 Hotels : I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com . If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights : I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

🚗 Rental Cars : I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation : I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

🤿 Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen : Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list ! Regular sunscreen is prohibited when swimming in the ocean and cenotes in Mexico, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.

Isla Contoy Visitors Guide: The Best Things To Do In Isla Contoy

Welcome to Isla Contoy Mexico

Isla Contoy is one of the most enchanting day trips you can take when you visit the Mexican Caribbean. The island is home to over 150 tropical bird species and four types of endangered sea turtles. These animals and a handful of scientists are the only full time inhabitants on this heavily protected island. Since the island has strict regulations, there are a few logistical things you need to plan for ahead of time. Here is everything you should know before visiting Isla Contoy!

Isla Contoy Bay

Where is Isla Contoy?

Isla Mujeres On A Map

Isla Contoy is a small island in the northeast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. This untouched natural wonder is just a few miles off the coast of  Cancun and near to Isla Mujeres . Isla Contoy is widely considered one of the best and most unique of the Yucatan islands. Located on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef (the second-longest coral reef system in the world), Isla Contoy is in a perfect spot for turquoise Caribbean waters, white sand beaches, and world-class diving and snorkeling. This is DEFINITELY the island life!

The Best Time to Visit Isla Contoy

Looking for the best time to go to Isla Contoy? The tropical climate in Isla Contoy is quite predictable and easy to make plans around. Without much of a temperature difference throughout the year, (the average temperature lingers around 83 degrees F) it’s the rainy hurricane season that most travelers need to pay attention to.

January – April

Perfect weather-wise, but sees the highest influx of tourists. If you are not a people person, consider this.

May – October

The hottest and most rainy months of the year but still plenty of sunshine and fantastic warm water for snorkeling & diving. Also, the hurricane season peaks in September and October so keep an eye on the forecasts and definitely get travel insurance just in case. Fewer tourists mean you can typically expect lower rates at hotels, resorts and tour companies during this time.

November – December

The autumn-winter months are considered by many to be the best times to visit Isla Contoy. The hurricane season has passed by this time and the humidity is low. Can be a little “chilly” in the evenings.

How to Get to Isla Contoy

You can only visit Isla Contoy through a boat tour as there is no way of reaching the island on your own. To preserve the island’s lush natural habitat, it has a limit of 200 guests per day. Most tours offer roughly the same package, so you can choose the one that is most convenient for you.

Generally, a tour to Isla Contoy:

  • Costs between $100-175 USD and typically includes Isla Mujeres as well.
  • Includes a light breakfast, drinks and snacks on the boat, and lunch.
  • May offer hotel pickup in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Riviera Maya (optional for an extra fee).
  • Takes you to Ixlache Reef to snorkel.
  • Lasts from 9 am – 5 pm (not including pickup time).
  • Does not include a $15 national park fee (payable in cash at the island).

What You Need To Know

Before going on the trip, you should review your tour’s information and guidelines. Some important general information that you should know includes:

  • Sunscreen and bug repellent are not allowed on the island to protect the fragile reefs. You need to apply both (reef-safe biodegradable) before going on the boat.
  • There is no smoking on the island or the boat.
  • You should bring a swimsuit, change of clothes, comfy shoes, sunglasses, a towel, a hat, binoculars, and $15 for the park entrance fee with you. Check out our What To Pack Guide for great tips and recommendations.
  • If you tend to get seasick, consider bringing some Dramamine.

Just wanted to write and say that I love all of these visitors guides. These take a lot of the guess work out of planning for a Mexico vacation. Thank you for these.

You are most welcome. We love helping people experience this beautiful part of the world.

We took a tour here a while ago, pre-covid. It really gave off tropical island vibes – we had the most amazing lunch with local foods and saw the beautiful sea life and that really impressed the kids.

I came across this visitor guide while researching things to do on our last trip to Mexico. My family ended up booking one of the boat tours suggested here, and we highly recommend it. We all had such an amazing time.

This is great. We can’t wait to visit Isla Contoy when we get to Cancun.

Thank you for the helpful information. We cant wait to visit Isla Contoy when we visit Mexico in June!

This post is great! Thank you for putting this together, I will definitely be visiting Isla Contoy now. It just sounds magical.

Isla Contoy was the best part of our trip to the Yucatan. HIGHLY recommended. Thanks!

Thank you for your extensive information on Isla Contoy.. Looking forward to experience the beauty of the island.

Isla Contoy looks like such a change of pace from Cancun and Playa. We appreciate your helpful information and will visit next time we are in the area. I love sea turtles!

We will be in Playa Del Carmen in April. We hope to see this island.

Isla Contoy Tour: Your Ultimate Day Trip Guide (2024)

' src=

Wondering if you should take an Isla Contoy tour? Or what happens on a day trip there? You’ve come to the right place!

I lived in Riviera Maya with my family for almost a year, and we did all the fun activities in the Yucatan. Including an Isla Contoy tour!

There has been ongoing commercial development in Riviera Maya over the last couple of decades. So it may be hard to believe that there is still a barely touched paradise just off the coast.

Taking an Isla Contoy tour means you get to visit exactly that! After all, Isla Contoy is one of the islands around Cancun.

Isla Contoy Fast Facts ➡️ 37.5 kilometers (~23.5 miles) northwest of Cancun ➡️ 8.5 km long ➡️ 700 meters at its widest point ➡️ 20 meters at its narrowest point ➡️ The smallest island in Mexico ➡️ Totally uninhabited ➡️ One of 67 National Parks in Mexico ➡️ Run by the non-governmental organization Amigos de Isla Contoy A.C. ➡️ Supervised by the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT)

Everything You Need to Know to Take an Isla Contoy Tour

Getting to isla contoy.

There is no Isla Contoy ferry. The only way to get there is by booking an Isla Contoy excursion. We booked our Isla Contoy tour from Isla Mujeres .

To ensure Isla Contoy tours do not become over-touristed like other parts of the Mayan Riviera, only 200 visitors are permitted each day. In addition, the tour operators allowed to bring guests are severely limited.

According to the guide we used to book, there are only three companies with active licenses to do this.

Everyone else is basically a reseller for the permitted tour companies. If you aren’t sure who to pick, you can always go with the same company we did! It was a great experience.

👉 I recommend booking with this company for your Isla Contoy tour.

They offer an Isla Contoy tour from Cancun, Isla Contoy tours from Playa del Carmen , and even pick up as far south as Tulum.

Private Isla Contoy Tours

Private boats are occasionally allowed to visit for Isla Contoy tours. However, there are a lot of rules regarding when and how the boats may arrive.

Anyone wishing to take a private boat to the island must apply for permission in person at a National Park office. There are locations in both Cancun and Isla Mujeres .

👉 You can also book this private Isla Contoy tour .

They take care of all the paperwork for you so the cost of USD per person is more than if you book a small group tour.

Regardless of whether visitors travel by group tour or on their own boat , Isla Contoy tours are tightly controlled. All boats must arrive between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM. In addition, they must depart the island between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.

Isla Contoy Tour Itineraries

Due to heavy regulations ensuring the safety of local wildlife, all the tour operators offer the same standard Isla Contoy all-inclusive package. The Isla Contoy tour price is also roughly the same, including the motorized Isla Contoy catamaran tour

Note: The Isla Contoy catamaran tour is not a sailboat. It’s a huge 2-hulled motorboat that holds many people.

I don’t recommend the catamaran tour because when we visited, its group was twice the size of ours and seemed less personalized.

The guy who ran it didn’t seem very friendly either. He yelled at his passengers a lot. Our boat drivers and guides were really nice!

Tours depart Monday through Saturday but may be canceled if the weather is bad. Plan your Isla Contoy tour in advance, just in case it needs to be rescheduled.

After pickup in Riviera Maya or Isla Mujeres , boats head to the visitor’s dock on Contoy. It’s actually the only dock on the entire island.

tour solo isla contoy

Boats stagger their arrival times so that no one arrives at the same time and passengers can deboard easily. Tours are generally divided into four categories: hiking, relaxation, lunch, and snorkeling.

In addition, unlimited drinks are available on the boats. The open bar options include beer, Coke, and bottled water.

Pro Tip: Don’t skimp on drinking water despite all the beer available. Your skin will thank you later.

One group at a time is taken along the gentle “hike” to the highest point on the island. Flip-flops are perfectly acceptable footwear for the “hike,” which is more of a gentle stroll on a sandy path.

Pro Tip : Don’t hike barefoot. The sand gets really hot!

The view from the top is absolutely lovely! There are scores of birds soaring on the air currents from end to end above the island.

Isla Contoy Hiking Path

Isla Contoy tour visitors can see the visitor center, the beach, the lighthouse, and kilometers of palm and mangrove trees.

At the end of the summit trip, guides take guests to the visitor center. It has helpful information about the island’s history. There is also detailed signage on local wildlife and conservation efforts.

We didn’t spend as much time as we wanted in the visitor center because the mosquitos were REALLY bad. We all needed to escape the bloodsucking swarm to swim in the calm, cool ocean.

tour solo isla contoy

Either before and/or after the summit trip, Isla Contoy tour visitors are encouraged to enjoy the beach during some free time.

Pro Tip: Walk to the end of the beach first. Explore as far as permitted and then return for swimming and relaxation. The cool ocean water will still be there after a hot stroll in the sun.

Tour operators provide snorkel equipment if you don’t bring your own. The beach doesn’t have a lot of highly interesting wildlife for Isla Contoy snorkeling.

Beach snorkeling is fun for kids on Isla Contoy day trips

However, younger kids often enjoy just swimming and looking around. We brought our snorkel gear onto the beach for Little Man. He had a blast exploring the sandy bottom.

Surprisingly, we actually did find some wildlife in the shallow waters including a few sea conchs. Don’t touch them, though; they’re endangered!

We also had a huge school of tiny fish swimming around us. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a thousand of them!

relaxing on the beach is an essential part of any isla contoy day trip.

All tours include a cooked lunch. Regardless of the tour company, the food is the same. This includes private tours to Isla Contoy.

It is served by the staff living on the island. On our tour lunch consisted of lasagna, chicken and veggies, fish, pico de gallo, chips, water, and juice. Little Man happily enjoyed lasagna, pico de gallo, and chips.

tour solo isla contoy

According to our guides, the lunches are generally the same each day with some small variations. The meals are planned loosely with kids in mind. This is why popular foods like chicken, pasta, and chips are easily available.

Lunches are served buffet style, so visitors can return as many times as they wish. For conservation purposes, all plates, cutlery, and cups should be reused.

After leaving Isla Contoy, we headed to the nearby Ixlaché Reef for snorkeling. It’s a barrier reef and is part of the national marine park that takes up much of the area surrounding Isla Mujeres.

To stagger arrivals on the island, some tours snorkel before heading to Contoy. Little Man is a seasoned open-water snorkeler and has snorkeled in Indonesia, Malaysia , and Mexico .

Fun Fact: Ixlache reef sits where the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico meet. It’s the start of the 625-mile-long Mesoamerican reef system, which is the longest in the Western Hemisphere and stretches from Mexico to Honduras.

Because the reef is between two large bodies of water, the currents are chaotic and a bit strong. Thankfully, I am a strong swimmer and Little Man is fearless.

Due to the current strengths, there were some unique rules we had to follow for safety. Everyone had to travel in a straight, single-file line behind the guide.

We also had to swim hard to keep up with his pace but also to ensure we didn’t get too close to the corals. In some places, the reef is quite close to the surface.

We enjoyed snorkeling during our isla contoy day trip

We did see some really cool fish and coral formations. However, this was not the typical explore-and-meet-back-at-the-boat excursion. In order to ensure Little Man didn’t get left behind, I held his hand or arm the entire time we snorkeled.

At some points he got tired, so I pulled him with me as I swam. It was a very tiring experience.

Parents of children under eight or people who are weak swimmers should discuss with the guides how to accommodate their needs before getting in the water.

Stop in Isla Mujeres

When we got back in the boat at the end of our snorkel time, our tour guides told us that we were making a surprise stop. They were taking us to swim and relax at Playa Norte beach on Isla Mujeres .

This wasn’t part of our planned agenda, having booked from Isla Mujeres. However, it is included for tourists from Cancun.

Most isla contoy day trips stop at Isla Mujeres before the excursion ends.

We could have joined the tour for this option. However, we had enjoyed Playa Norte previously on our whale shark tour and we were staying on Isla Mujeres so we could go there any time.

Instead, we opted to head back to our hotel for a shower and early dinner.

Note: Swimming with whale sharks is really fun! Skip the private whale shark tour to save money if you do this experience.

Tours departing from Cancun typically arrive back there around 5:00 PM.

History of Isla Contoy

This island has a long history that pre-dates the Mayans. The origin of its use is so old that there are questions regarding what its name actually means.

What does Isla Contoy Mean?

Isla means “island” in Spanish. The word “contoy” is of Mayan origin but the exact meaning is disputed. Some say it combines the Mayan words “Kom” and ‘To’oy,” which together mean “low shelter.”

In that instance, it could be a reference to the island’s shallow waters that have provided refuge to fishermen, sailors, and pirates for centuries.

Other people say “contoy” is a mispronunciation of the Maya word “pontó,” which means “pelican.” These birds are one of the most commonly seen birds on the island, as we can attest from our Contoy Island tour.

tour solo isla contoy

Pre-Mayan Island History

Ceramics, worked shells, and other items lead archaeologists to believe it was occupied before 300-200 BCE. This was even before even the Mayan culture existed, in the period known as “Pre-classic Superior”.

The island was a part of the ancient pre-hispanic maritime route that linked the Laguna de Terminos , near Merida, with all the Caribbean islands. The Maya also visited Contoy but didn’t construct any permanent settlements on the island.

Fun Fact: Archeologists think the absence of permanent dwellings there is most likely due to the lack of freshwater.

The only known ancient structure on the island is the ruins of a Mayan shelling station, with fragments of carved shells and simple pottery found nearby.

During the colonization of Mexico, it became a resting place and shelter for conquistadors exploring and plundering the region. Mayan people stopped visiting the island during this time, too.

The waters surrounding Isla Contoy witnessed naval battles between galleons and pirate ships as well as shipwrecks.

Isla Contoy tours leaving from Cancun take passengers past several shipwrecks. The water is so clear in some areas that a knowing eye can see the shadows of at least one.

Discovering Isla Contoy’s Ecological Value

Isla Contoy was first officially mentioned by John L. Stephens in 1892. He highlighted the presence of large numbers and varieties of birds there.

During the early 1900s, the island lighthouse was constructed. Locals referred to the island as the “island of birds” and it began to be recognized as a sanctuary. More naturalists, especially ornithologists, began to visit and do research there.

tour solo isla contoy

Also in the early 1900s, naturalists E. W. Nelson and E. A. Goldman briefly stayed on the island making observations on the birds. Local residents told the naturalists about the disappearance of a nesting site for the blue-faced booby bird.

The disappearance was a consequence of the construction of the Contoy lighthouse. Since then, there are no records that the blue-faced booby has again nested on the island.

Isla Contoy

During the 1950s, turtle camps temporarily inhabited the island. Generally, though, the island has remained uninhabited. The exception is a handful of scientists doing wildlife research as well as some staff for the preserve to support the limited tourism allowed there.

Protecting Contoy Island

Shortly after 1950, Mexican ecological authorities and naturalists realized Isla Contoy is one of the most important seabird nesting places in the Mexican Caribbean.

The island’s lagoons and dense mangroves provide shelter for over 177 bird species like brown pelicans, olive cormorants, brown boobies, red flamingos, and white herons. During the winter, over 10,000 birds migrate there.

Fun Fact: On February 8, 1961, Isla Contoy was made into a natural reserve area by then-president Adolfo Lopez Mateos. This made Contoy the first protected area in the Yucatan Peninsula.

For two decades, local tour operators traveled periodically to the island. The visitor center and observation tower were built in 1982.

tour solo isla contoy

Later in the 1980s, island oversight passed to the Urban Development and Ecology Secretary (SEDUE), who categorized it as a special biosphere reserve. On October 29, 1986 the island’s beach was declared a protected area for sea turtles.

The Mexican government realized that the island has both scientific and historical value, so additional protection was needed. Isla Contoy was made a National Park on February 2, 1998. This means that it can never be privately owned or developed.

Rules for Isla Contoy Tours

☑️ Don’t touch any wildlife. No animals, no sea creatures. As a wildlife sanctuary, humans are only visitors.

☑️ No sunscreen or bug spray is permitted. This includes reef-safe or environmentally friendly brands. Zero chemicals are permitted in the National Park area, either on the beaches or in the water.

Sunscreen is not permitted on day trips to Isla Contoy.

☑️ Don’t hang anything from trees or bushes. This includes wet clothes. Living things need those plants for food or for their homes. Hanging things from them could damage the plants.

☑️ No smoking anywhere in the National Park. Including on the boats while they are docked. Most guides will not permit smoking on board at all.

☑️ Avoid the turtle nests. These are clearly marked with posts and caution tape. You cannot miss them. Stay far away if you see any. Sea turtles are endangered and Mexico takes seriously its role in increasing sea turtle populations.

We saw sea turtle nests on our Isla Contoy Day Trip

Our guide warned us before leaving the boat of the consequences if we broke the rules. There are guards patrolling the island to ensure visitors follow the rules.

If they find someone breaking the rules, the entire tour group is required to immediately leave the island. When that happens, no refunds are given to anyone.

Can you imagine the uncomfortable ride back if you were found breaking the rules? We didn’t want that to be us!

In addition, all the rules are common sense. We are just visitors to an island that is maintained for the safety of the wildlife. Their needs come before ours.

Isla Contoy Tour Packing List

Everything you take should easily fit in a small backpack or wet/dry bag. You can leave them on the boat or take them ashore with you. However, there is no secure storage on the boat so I recommend taking at least your essential belongings with you.

👉 We like wet/dry bags with backpack straps, like this one .

These allow us parents to keep our hands free for taking photos or helping Little Man as needed. Based on our Isla Contoy tour experience, we recommend visitors take the following:

  • Swimsuit. Definitely wear this under your clothing.
  • Snorkel gear. You can also use what the tour companies provide. However, with the pandemic, we now choose to bring our own.
  • Long sleeve rash guard. Preferably, choose one with a hood to protect your neck and face
  • Binoculars. There are so many birds on the island, these will definitely get some use!

👉 We travel with these binoculars so Little Man can use them easily, not just the adults.

  • Swim shorts or swim leggings. This day trip was the first time in years my legs were sunburned at the end. I tan easily, too.
  • A buff or sunhat if your rash guard doesn’t have a hood. Trust me, you do not want to sleep with sunburned ears.
  • Camera. Put it in a waterproof case if you plan to take beach pictures.
  • Waterproof Waist Pouch. To store important things, like money and room keys.

👉 I love this waist pouch . It triple seals before rolling down to velcro shut. After 2+ years of regular use, I’ve had no problems.

  • Flip Flops. While you can walk up to the summit barefoot, I wouldn’t recommend it. Even Little Man was grateful to have sandals, and he never wants to wear shoes.
  • A big towel or sarong. This can also act as leg protection in the visitor center. You’ll eat lunch there, so avoiding mosquitos completely is impossible.

👉 We prefer these quick-dry towels . They’re soft but also don’t feel wet very long. Plus each family member can have their own color, which makes for easy packing!

  • Sunglasses. This is self-explanatory. You’re in the sun all day, so protect your eyes!
  • Dramamine. The crossing isn’t terribly bumpy, so most people won’t need this. But have some handy if you or your kid are prone to motion sickness.

👉 If your kid doesn’t swallow pills yet, pick up some chewable Dramamine tablets .

Conclusion: Taking an Isla Contoy Tour

As far as excursions in Riviera Maya go, to tour Isla Contoy is truly unique. It’s an undeveloped paradise and very different from an Isla Mujeres tour.

Adequate sun protective clothing will make this experience a winner for any family, especially since long sleeves, buffs, and sarongs can protect from mosquitos as well.

Although the snorkeling experience was faster-paced and more physically demanding than we’re used to, it wasn’t unreasonable.

Knowing everything we do now, we’d still take this Isla Contoy tour again. And we certainly recommend it to others as well!

👉 While we have global health insurance for our day-to-day lives, we also elect travel insurance with SafetyWing for our spurts of fast travel adventure!

How to Visit Isla Contoy (Riviera Maya): The Definitive Guide

  • Isla Contoy (Cancun): Everything You Need to Know For Your Visit

Have you ever dreamed of visiting a pristine island paradise in Mexico ? If so, you will love Isla Contoy , a small island that boasts stunning turquoise waters, white sand, and exotic birds.

Isla Contoy is a dream destination for beach lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, but it’s not easy to get there. Only 200 visitors are allowed per day to preserve its natural beauty. That’s why you need to plan ahead and book your tour in advance.

In this guide, I will share with you everything you need to know about Isla Contoy, including what to see and do on the island , how to get there from Cancun and what to expect from the tour .

I will also give you my best hotel tips for Cancun and Playa del Carmen , where you can stay before or after your visit.

Are you ready to explore Isla Contoy? Let’s get started!

What is Contoy Island?

1. snorkeling, 2. a visit to contoy, 3. the quick stop to isla mujeres, how to get to contoy, where to stay when visiting isla contoy, how to find your plane tickets at the best price, rent a car in mexico, you’re traveling in mexico these articles will help you.

Contoy is a small island that stretches for less than 6 miles, where the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexic o meet, just 18 miles away from Isla Mujeres . It’s the oldest national park in Quintana Roo.

It’s also the most important nesting spot for seabirds in the Mexican Caribbean.

And it has 10 nesting sites for turtles : the Loggerhead, the Hawksbill and the Dermatemys mawii.

The island has 7 saltwater lagoons , but only one is open to visitors: the Laguna Azul.

No one lives on the island, except for some biologists and coastguards!

How is the tour to Isla Contoy?

I booked the tour to Isla Contoy from Playa del Carmen , but you can also go straight from Cancun ‘s port.

The tour has 3 parts:

We leave Cancun at 10am and in ten minutes we arrive at a snorkeling spot in the Ixlache reef . The activity is fun, especially because the water here is amazing. You can see coral, fish and even statues.

  • The downside: it’s packed with other groups and you have to follow the guide in the water so you don’t lose him. That makes it less magical. I also don’t like that they feed the fish to attract them and make them easier to see.

But the sun is bright, the water is refreshing, and I clear my mind. Marco, one of the friendly crew members, gives me a piña colada . I go to the upper deck and relax, enjoying the view, the sun and the breeze.

The boat heads towards Isla Contoy.

bateau cancun

It takes an hour to reach Contoy.

I use the time to watch the people around me: a Russian father and his son, three Argentinian girls who came to party in Mexico, a quiet couple from Quebec and a small family of Americans who are sunburnt despite using a lot of sun cream.

Halfway there, they tell us the rules for visiting Contoy:

  • no touching of plants or animals
  • no sunscreen (they ask us to put it on well before we get there, and to rub it in well so there’s no excess on our skin)

After passing by the beautiful Isla Blanca , Contoy finally shows up in the distance. The closer we get, the more I realize that this is indeed paradise!

contoy-mexique

When we get there, we have two options: relax on the beach until lunchtime, or join the short (30min) guided tour of the island . The first option sounds tempting, but I choose to follow the guide while most people go straight to the beach.

The guide takes us first to the small museum to tell us about Contoy Island and its plants and animals.

Then he takes us to the only lagoon open to visitors: the Laguna Azul . It’s full of seabirds, like the frigatebird , Isla Contoy’s iconic bird, that you can recognize by the male’s red pouch, which he inflates to impress females.

We follow the little path again, and the thick vegetation turns into palm trees. We walk along a sandy path to the other side of the island, which is very different from the beach. Here, the waves crash on the rocks, creating pools where tiny crustaceans live.

laguna azul contoy

On my way back to the beach, I see a big plate of fish that smells delicious. Luckily, it’s lunchtime. We can choose between chicken or Tik-in-chik fish . In this dreamy place, the fish sounds perfect!

poisson tikinchik

But I don’t want to linger at the table, because the boat leaves at 2:30 pm and I don’t want to miss the beautiful sandy beach and its clear turquoise water !

It’s time to go, and the crew is waving at us from afar.

Nobody wants to leave. People snap one last photo and head to the dock reluctantly.

Who would want to leave this place?

Before going back to Cancun , the boat stops by Isla Mujeres for a free visit .

Isla Mujeres , “Island of Women”, got its name from the Mayan temple dedicated to Ixchel , goddess of fertility, found on the island.

Today, it’s a tourist destination where people come to enjoy beaches, snorkeling and diving.

This is not the vibe of Contoy : here you’ll find small resorts, a small airport and a harbour with many boats. But luckily , it’s still a lovely, small island that hasn’t been totally changed or modernized for tourism.

We have about 1h15 on the island, enough time to explore its little streets and beaches quickly.

Here’s how to make the most of Isla Mujeres in the shortest time possible :

-When you get off the boat, take the street in front of you and turn left at the 3rd corner, Guerrero Street (the 1st and 2nd streets you’ll see are very touristy, full of vendors). You’ll see a more authentic, quieter and charming side of Isla Mujeres !

-Keep going on this street until you reach the beach : this is Playa Norte . You can rent sun loungers from restaurants and bars, but you might not have enough time anyway. other side of the island , which is very different from the beach . Here, the waves crash on the rocks, creating pools where tiny crustaceans live.

-The best part here is that you can easily walk in the water, as it’s shallow. Walk along the beach in a loop back to the harbour .

-Along the way, you’ll see the more family-friendly Playa Los Cocos , where you can relax without having to buy anything or eat anything.
