Taking a Madison Square Garden tour is the best way to see this famous coliseum-style arena up close. Madison Square Garden (MSG) is a world-renowned performance venue that has hosted some of the biggest names in athletics and is home to the New York Knicks basketball team, the New York Rangers hockey team, and the New York Liberty women’s basketball team.

In addition, MSG regularly holds concerts, comedy shows, and political events, and it has several exhibits chronicling its 130-year history.

The Best Tour of Madison Square Garden

You can explore MSG on your own when you attend an NBA game or concert, but if you don’t plan on going to an event, the Madison Square Garden all-access tour is a great alternative. Personally, we don’t prioritize sporting events, so being able to take a guided tour of the facilities was super convenient.

After all, MSG is part of the fabric of the Big Apple, so visiting the arena is crucial to any New York experience. During the tour, you’ll get a peek at the backstage preparations, player locker rooms, luxury VIP box seats, and other exclusive areas. Below, I’ll let you know what to expect from the tour as well as important information like ticket prices and schedules.

If you’re ready to book and want to skip our Madison Square Garden tour review , you can book your ticket online here . Keep in mind that the tour is included in several New York city passes like the New York Pass , so if you plan on visiting some other attractions, I recommend getting one of these tourist cards.

Why take a tour of Madison Square Garden?

Madison Square Garden is one of the most famous places in NYC and is well worth visiting, especially if you love music or sports. This huge performance venue has 130 years of history and has a prominent place in New York City’s culture.

It’s also an important part of New York’s sports scene, particularly professional basketball and hockey. MSG has hosted several All-Star Games for the NBA, WNBA and NHL, and it’s where Stephen Curry broke the NBA’s all-time record for three-pointers in 2021, scoring his 2,977 th three-pointer.

Outside of MSG, tours of madison square garden

Over the years, the Madison Square Garden arena has seen musicians, comedians, politicians, and other top performers take the stage. Elton John says MSG is his favorite performance venue, and he once held the record for most shows here. Billy Joel now holds that record, with 134 shows.

It’s not hard to see why celebrities love this place. MSG’s coliseum-inspired shape and rich history make it one of the most unique venues in the world, and taking a Madison Square Garden tour is the best way to see its most exclusive areas.

The Madison Square Garden all-access tour

During the all-access tour of Madison Square Garden , you’ll follow a professional guide to see several backstage areas and interesting exhibits.

In the Main Concourse, you’ll see the Garden 366 Retrospective , a visual exhibit showcasing one important cultural moment for every day of the year, including February 29 th . The oldest event is from 1879 when the arena first opened, and this Hall of Fame is subject to change as new moments occur.

Another thing you’ll see is the Defining Moments exhibit , a documentary-style collection of memorabilia, including articles, photographs, and recordings chronicling the 130-year history of Madison Square Garden . Here, you’ll get a glimpse of key moments from the past, like John Lennon’s final performance before his death, Wayne Gretzky’s retirement from professional hockey, and the legendary 1971 boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.

This backstage tour of Madison Square Garden continues with a visit to more exclusive areas like backstage, the luxury suite, and the Chase Bridge , a catwalk-style overhang under the roof with two rows of seating. From here, spectators get the most unique aerial view of the arena, which is why they’re considered the best seats in the house.

Finally, each tour includes a bonus surprise visit. Depending on the day, it could be the ice rink, a new stage setup, the locker room, or another exclusive area that’s normally closed off to the public.

Our experience and review of the Madison Square Garden tour

Visiting Madison Square Garden is totally worth it, even if you aren’t a huge sports fan or music lover. At the end of the day, the arena is one of the most impressive places in the Big Apple and a crucial part of its cultural significance and history. If you’re not going to attend a game or event at MSG, the tour is a great alternative that will allow you to explore the famous performance venue.

I also think the Madison Square Garden tour is great for all ages since there are parts of the tour that will appeal to everyone. Whether you want to learn more about its history or you want to see the expansiveness of the arena, you’ll walk away satisfied.

However, I do wish that the tour was a bit longer, so we had more time to take photos. The tour is only an hour, so the guides are pretty strict about moving everyone along. Also, I highly recommend getting the New York Pass so you can save money on your Madison Square Garden tour tickets and save money on other nearby attractions like the Empire State Building .

Madison Square Garden All Access Tour

Madison Square Garden All Access Tour Passes

The World’s Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden in New York City. | Photo Courtesy of Madison Square Garden

Walking through the doors of “the world’s most famous arena” imposes an unrelenting feeling of excitement. Even on quieter, off-days when there aren’t any games or concerts to be played, the energy remains. A lifelong New York Rangers fan, just a stroll past the Garden elicits memories of walking the concourse with my dad, the roar of the crowd after a goal scored and witnessing hockey greats like Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Mike Richter take to the ice. So, when the opportunity to experience the Madison Square Garden All Access Tour presented itself, to say I leapt at the opportunity would be an understatement.

[soliloquy id="15058"]

On the behind-the-scenes tour of Madison Square Garden , you’ll visit the home of the New York Rangers and New York Knicks, learning about iconic moments that have made sports and entertainment history. Perusing the main concourse—now a full-fledged exhibition of “Defining Moments” and historic MSG memorabilia, our guide shares notable events throughout the arena’s illustrious past, like the “Fight of the Century” between Muhammad Ali and Joe Fraiser, John Stark’s famous dunk over Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky’s final game in the NHL.

[soliloquy id="15059"]

Photos border the ceiling throughout the hall. Part of Garden 366, each image chronicles one thrilling moment in Garden history for each day of the year—the oldest dating back to 1879! There’s even an interactive display offering more information for each notable event. Naturally, I had to give it a try. Scanning through MSG’s vast history, I discover that Black Sabbath had played the arena with Van Halen on my birthday nearly 15 years before I was born.

[soliloquy id="15060"]

Above Garden 366 is “Celebrity Row” and the Lexus Level suites. Entering one offers a real feeling of luxury. The intimate space accommodates up to 24 people, offers a premium food menu from signature chefs and sommeliers, a private bathroom and suite attendant, and a guaranteed,  incredible view of the event below. We’re a bit early, but we catch a glimpse of MSG crew constructing the stage for that night’s J. Cole concert.

We’re given a moment to recline and take in the view of the empty arena. Our guide points out additions from Madison Square Garden’s 3-year, $1 billion renovations between 2011 and 2013.

As we exit the Lexus Level, we take a complimentary video. MSG staff offers us New York Rangers and Knicks gear, hockey sticks, basketballs, boxing gloves and more as we step in front of a large green screen to say “MSG!”

Grab memorabilia from your favorite team and take home a complimentary video! | Video Courtesy of Madison Square Garden

Beyond the suites awaits more MSG collectibles, like Elton John’s autographed set list, the liturgy book for the Papal Mass of Pope Francis, Dave Matthews’ guitar and so much more. More interactive exhibits are available, too! Put your goalie reflexes to the test and compete against Henrik Lunqvist—let’s just say I’m no match for the King, compare your hand size against Knicks legends, assess your boxing strength and answer concert trivia. There’s also an incredible, new VR experience that puts you center-stage at one of Billy Joel’s 102 performances at the arena—it is surreal.

[soliloquy id="15061"]

Heading atop the Chase Bridge, I’m in awe. Looking outward, eye level with New York Rangers and Knicks championship banners, the 233-foot suspended platform offers some of the most distinctive views of any arena in the world.

The finale of the tour is a unique opportunity to see the New York Knicks and New York Rangers locker rooms. This is by far  the  highlight of the experience. Unfortunately, there aren’t any athletes around during our visit.

Jennifer Lopez cancels tour, including Prudential Center, Madison Square Garden shows

1-minute read.

tour of madison square garden

Singer Jennifer Lopez' summer tour "This Is Me, Live" has been cancelled, including shows at the Prudential Center and Madison Square Garden, Live Nation representatives announced on her website .

The website says the reason for the cancellation is because Lopez "is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends." Back in March, their were reports that seven shows on her tour were cancelled due to a "logistical issue," according to Ticketmaster.

Lopez herself released a statement on her website saying how she is "completely devastated and heartbroken about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn't do this if I didn't feel it was absolutely necessary."

How to get a Jennifer Lopez refund

All tickets purchased through Ticketmaster will automatically be refunded, according to the statement on her website. If fans purchased tickets on third party sites such as SeatGeek, StubHub and VividSeats, those must reach out to the point of purchase for further details.

A New Jersey show at Prudential Center in Newark was scheduled for Aug. 10 on the summer tour. Lopez was also supposed to perform at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Aug. 16.

Lopez was on tour for her new album "This Is Me, Now" which released in February. An Amazon Prime movie called "This is me, now: A Love Story" was released simultaneously with her music project.

Even though Lopez has achieved great commercial success in the past with four No. 1 singles in the Billboard Hot 100 , Forbes reports that her last album sold 14,000 copies , the lowest of her career.

Lopez has great ties to the metropolitan area being from the Bronx, a place that the singer and actress has shouted that out many times in her music and throughout her career.

Tomorrow x Together Made Dreams Come True on Stage at Madison Square Garden — Their Fans' and Their Own (Exclusive)

The K-pop stars open up about feeling "grateful" as they tick off major milestones on their ACT : PROMISE tour and enjoy every moment along the way

Mackenzie Schmidt is the Home and Travel Editor for PEOPLE. She's worked at PEOPLE for over five years as a writer and editor on the Lifestyle team.

tour of madison square garden

  • Tomorrow x Together played Madison Square Garden for the first time this week
  • The tour wraps up its U.S. leg in Washington, D.C. this weekend before heading to Japan
  • Their set list was a combination of album tracks from their latest release, Minisode 3: Tomorrow, and fan favorites from over the years

When Tomorrow x Together takes the stage on their third world tour, they're dressed like prnces, draped in finery. About three hours later, as they make their final bows, they're in jeans, t-shirts and hoodies.

The transition from untouchable idols to approachable friends, is one the K-pop group's five members — Soobin, 23, Yeonjun, 24, Beomgyu, 22, Taehyun, 21, and Hueningkai, 21 — revel in every night on their 22-date tour, ACT : PROMISE, which wraps up its U.S. leg in Washington, D.C. this weekend before heading to Japan.

"I think one of the unique aspects of our show is that it has storyline. It makes the entire experience more immersive for our fans," says Soobin, the group's leader, while catching up with PEOPLE backstage at Madison Square Garden on Sunday

Taehyun is a fan of their opening number "Deja Vu" for "the sound and the visuals. They're all grand in terms of scale," he shares. While Hueningkai appreciates the finale for its fashion: "The end of the show, it's too hot so it's just t-shirts," he says with a laugh.

Asked what they want fans to come away from their show saying, Hueningkai's hope is simple: "I was happy. It was a happy moment for me," and of course, "I want to come again."

TXT's shows — like most in the world of K-pop — are elaborately choreographed and exactingly executed, but five year's into their careers, the members have hit their stride in a way that allows them to relax a little more and savor the experience.

"I've started to feel this like the year before last year or last year. I think we definitely evolved. And we've improved a lot of our music and also vocals and performances," says Taehyun, who sang a remarkable few bars of "Empire State of Mind" at the New York show. "But at the same time, I feel like we've grown so much in terms of our demeanor on stage. We feel more relaxed and comfortable. I'm quite surprised about myself and my members."

That evolution allows them to enjoy the unplanned moments on stage too. And there have been quite a few.

During their outdoor show in Oakland, for example, a confetti canon's streamers were caught by the wind and ended up clobbering Beomgyu and Yeonjun , who like true pros carried on singing and even turned it into a catwalk featuring their accidental accessories . (That moment may also remind fans of TXT's label mates BTS, whose member V famously handled a similar conundrum the same way.)

Sometimes, says Beomgyu, the props are just out to get you. He recalled one such night to PEOPLE: "I had this buchae [a traditional Korean fan] that I used while I was performing and it just flew away. And then I kicked the mic stand and it's supposed to be knocked over, but instead it just came back. So that night, I had that kind of moment."

On occassion, MOA (their fans' collective name, an acronym for "Moments of Alwaysness") create those unexpected moments for them.

Recently during a meet-and-greet, a fan handed Yeonjun a piece of paper asking if he'd film him proposing to his girlfriend. Yeonjun was elated and the video of the special moment — and his completely shocked expression — has naturally gone viral on Tiktok.

"I didn't have any expectations for that, so I think that makes it even more memorable," he says, grinning, before adding that another fan recently told him they used their 2021 track "Magic" as their wedding song.

Their set list at MSG, where they played back-to-back shows this week, was a combination of album tracks from their latest release, Minisode 3: Tomorrow, and fan favorites from over the years. Some songs are fully in English, like "Back for More," which they first recorded as a duet with Anitta , but many are primarily in Korean.

The group's international fans still sing along to the best of their ability and make up the difference by shouting out the English parts. And it doesn't bother the group one bit that they're not having every syllable echoed back to them. "I actually find it adorable," says Hueningkai. "It's cute that they are trying so hard and they go [he hums the tune of one of their songs enthusiastically]. They know the melody."

In 2022, PEOPLE caught up with TXT at their New York hotel after a show at the Hulu Theater (capacity 6,500). Asked whether they liked the intimacy of that venue or would prefer something bigger, Yeonjun answered immediately, "Larger spaces." In particular, the dream was Madison Square Garden.

"We'd love that. It sounds so fun," Soobin added at the time. On Saturday and Sunday, they realized that dream, filling the venue that can seat 20,000.

"I'm so grateful that we're hitting so many milestones," says Taehyun. "My goal for this tour is just for everyone in the group to stay healthy to the last show. For next year's tour, if it's possible, I would like to see more stadiums."

Adds Hueningkai, "We're going to dream big."
