Tour n' Cure: Egypt launches medical tourism campaign to eradicate hepatitis C

With the highest rate of hepatitis C globally, Egypt has developed an expertise in treating it. Now it is looking to share its know-how, as well as locally produced low-cost drugs, with foreigners having trouble getting treatment at home.

After launching an aggressive campaign to fight the debilitating hepatitis C virus domestically, Egypt launched a program to help the estimated 71 million people afflicted with the disease worldwide. In May, 2016 the country launched the Tour n’ Cure programme, which has been promoted by football celebrities Lionel Messi and Dani Alves. For €5,900 or $8,000, European patients can spend a week in Egypt and tour the country at the same time they receive treatment for the virus.

“That includes everything flights, five-star accommodation, medical analysis, drugs,” said Mostafa El Sayed, managing director of Tour n' Cure.  “It also includes three days of tourism.” Visitors can choose to spend their sightseeing days in Cairo, Luxor, or Sharm el-Sheikh.

Patients take the first few rounds of medication while in the country, then bring the remainder of the medication home with them. They do the final test with their local doctor to determine if they have been cured. If not, they will be treated again at no additional cost, but all of the roughly 200 foreigners who have taken part in the programme, so far, have had successful outcomes.

The weak spot in Tour n’ Cure, experts say,  is not the treatment itself but rather that, firstly, a lot of people don’t see Egypt as a desirable vacation spot and, secondly, there are several reliable Indian pharmaceutical companies that not only manufacture the drugs but allow them to be ordered online.

“Tour n’ Cure is a bit weird in that it’s ‘come see the sites and get cured,’” said Charles Gore, president of the World Hepatitis Alliance. “Egypt is not the safest place, to be honest, at the moment. It’s an extremely illiberal regime.”

El Sayed said that the company realises that there are people who don’t want to travel to Egypt, so he set up a regional treatment hub in Moldova, which has already treated more than a dozen patients, and is looking at doing the same somewhere in Asia, likely Indonesia or Malaysia.

Sherine Helmy, CEO of Pharco, the company manufacturing the lion’s share of the generic drugs being used to treat the virus in Egypt, acknowledged that mail order is a good option for patients who don’t want to travel. He doesn’t see the companies providing that service as competitors, rather as fellow warriors in the fight to wipe out the virus.

“Last year we covered around 700,000 patients, but we are ready to produce in the millions,” he said. “Our plan is to cure 37 percent of patients worldwide by 2030.”

Shortcomings aside, the programme has been a lifesaver for people like documentary filmmaker and photographer Tim Coleman. He went through two unsuccessful rounds of interferon treatment in his native UK and had grown so weak from the disease that he could hardly work. Because of his previous failed treatments, he was low on the list to receive the drugs from the National Health Service, if he would have been able to get them at all. The only option available to him in England at that point was to pay the £120,000 the drugs cost in the UK.

“I had no energy, I had to get out of London and rest a lot,” the photographer and documentary filmmaker said. “I would go to Egypt to rest.”

It was during one of those visits that, while on an internal flight, Coleman saw an advertisement for Tour n’ Cure in the inflight magazine. He made the phone call as soon as he got to Cairo.

That was a year and a half ago. Today he is entirely virus free. “It is truly miraculous, what they’ve managed to do,” he said. “It’s such a success story. The whole thing is something the Egyptians can be really proud of.”

Tour n' cure: messi promotes medical tourism in egypt.

"Medication against Hepatitis C saves lives, let's put an end to the waiting lists," Messi said on his official Facebook page.

Messi, who was welcomed by renowned Egyptologist and former antiquities minister Zahi Hawass, toured the pyramids of Giza shortly after landing in Cairo on Tuesday.

"I came here before, in 2007, but I did not have a chance to explore the pyramids the way I did today," Messi said in a brief interview with local channel ONTV.

"Egypt is a country with a big history and I'm happy to visit it."

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism hopes Messi's "historic visit" will enhance the country's tourism sector, which has been  struggling  in recent years due to political turmoil and security issues.

"Such visits by international public figures, undoubtedly, pour in favour of Egypt and serve its tourism sector significantly," the ministry said in a statement.

The football superstar, who plays for Spanish club FC Barcelona, was initially scheduled to arrive in Egypt in December, but agreed to postpone after the deadly bombing of Cairo's St. Peter and St. Paul's Church, which left 29 people dead.

He postponed his visit for the second time last week his team suffered an overnight massive 0-4 loss to Paris Saint-Germain. Tour n' Cure

The 29-year-old, named the world's best player for a record five times, has signed to become the ambassador for Tour n' Cure , the Egyptian initiative said on its website.

The programme offers treatment for hepatitis C patients from all over the world "with no waiting time and at a fraction of the cost", it said.

It also offers "the opportunity to take in the beauty of Egypt and visit historic landmarks during the days of the treatment, while enjoying a relaxing stay at a 5-star hotel".

Hepatitis C affects 130 to 150 million people globally and can result in liver cirrhosis or cancer.

According to the World Health Organisation, it is responsible for up to 500,000 deaths every year.

The Cure announced their first run of North American dates in more than four years on Thursday (March 9). The Robert Smith-led band’s Shows of a Lost World Tour is slated to kick off on May 10 at the Smoothie Center in New Orleans and take the goth rock icons through Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, Montreal and Atlanta before wrapping up at Miami-Dade Arena in Miami, FL on July 1.

Tickets for all 30 dates will go on sale via Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan program beginning March 15; pre-registration is required and registration will close on March 13 at 10 a.m. PT. In the wake of ticket sale snafus affecting Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny onsales, in a message to fans, the Cure wrote, “we have priced tickets to benefit fans and our efforts to block scalpers and limited inflated resale prices are being supported by our ticketing partners.”

At press time there was no information about new music from the band, though Smith has been promising a follow-up to 2008’s 4:13 Dream for several years .

Chinese scientists cure diabetes using stem cells in world first

• The 59-year-old patient of 25 years received a transplant of pancreatic cells derived from his own stem cells in 2021. He is now insulin independent.
• This marks the world’s first successful use of stem cell-derived islet transplantation to cure diabetes .
• The achievement, published on Cell Discovery on April 30, comes after over a decade of research at Shanghai Changzheng Hospital.
• Diabetes is a major health threat, affecting 422 million people worldwide. While there is still no known cure for diabetes, methods of management include insulin injections and other medications.
• The patient reportedly suffered a significant decline in pancreatic islet function, which regulates blood sugar, after undergoing a kidney transplant in 2017. Since then, he had been dependent on daily multiple insulin injections. 
• In July 2021, a team at the hospital led by researcher Yin Hao used the patient’s own blood cells to create stem cells, which were then converted into pancreatic islet cells.
• The transplant successfully eliminated the patient’s need for external insulin within 11 weeks. Oral medication was also gradually reduced and ultimately discontinued a year later.
• Follow-up exams showed restored pancreatic function and normal kidney function, suggesting that the patient has been cured .
• In 2023, the FDA approved a similar cell therapy  treatment by a Chicago-based startup for type 1 diabetes.
• The Chinese researchers say more research is needed to confirm the long-term efficacy and broaden applicability of this treatment.

Jennifer Lopez cancels 2024 tour This Is Me: 'Completely heartsick and devastated'

Jennifer Lopez has canceled her summer North American tour , which was to be her first in five years, weeks before she was scheduled to go on the road.

The pop star made the announcement Friday in her On The JLo fan newsletter.

"Representatives for Live Nation announced today that the Jennifer Lopez US Summer 2024 Tour 'THIS IS ME...LIVE' is canceled, citing ... 'Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,'" the newsletter reads.

The statement was followed by a personal note , "A Special Message to My JLovers OnTheJLo."

"I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again," Lopez wrote. "I love you all so much. Until next time..."

Lopez's first show of the tour had been slated for June 26 in Orlando, Florida.

This Is Me... Live announcement comes after seven tour dates were canceled

The announcement comes weeks after several shows on the tour were canceled without explanation. According to Ticketmaster, Lopez's scheduled performances in Nashville, Tennessee; New Orleans; Raleigh, North Carolina; Atlanta; Houston; Cleveland and Tampa, Florida would no longer take place.

"Unfortunately, the event organizer has had to cancel your event," the message for those pages reads.

This is Me...Live was a 30-date arena tour that was going to feature Lopez's chart-breakers and classic hits from her discography, like songs "On The Floor," "Let's Get Loud" and "Jenny from the Block." Her most recent tour in 2019, the It's My Party tour, sold out venues across the country.

The tour was in support of her new album, “This is Me … Now,” which released in February. The record was accompanied by an Amazon Prime musical movie, “ This is Me … Now: A Love Story ."

Speaking to USA TODAY earlier this year about "This is Me ... Now" possibly being her swan song, Lopez said, "This was going to be the quintessential thing I have been searching for and wanted to say about love."

"I’ve been on this search for so long, since people first met me and my first record came out and even before that in my first movie role, where I’ve been on this journey trying to figure this thing out for myself. This (album) kind of closed the loop in a way,” she said. “It captures this moment to really say the things I want to say about love, and that is that true love does exist and some things are forever. Please don’t give up on that because that’s all that matters in life … love.”'

Separate outings have fueled speculation about marriage with Ben Affleck

Lopez's announcement also comes amid widespread speculation about her marriage of nearly two years to Ben Affleck.

After various media reports suggested Lopez and Affleck may no longer be living together, the Hollywood A-List couple has been increasingly under the microscope, with media prying over their whereabouts and whether both are still wearing their rings.

On May 16, Lopez and Affleck were photographed together for the first time in over a month, with each spotted wearing their respective wedding rings.

The two were engaged to each other twice: first in 2002 then again in 2021. The couple got married in a late-night ceremony in Las Vegas on July 16, 2022, which Lopez called "the best possible wedding we could have imagined."

This is the second marriage for Affleck and the fourth for Lopez.

Auburn freshman Jackson Koivun makes cut at the Memorial in PGA TOUR debut, one step closer to earning card

DUBLIN, Ohio – Jackson Koivun’s list of accolades is already extensive. The 19-year-old college freshman became the first golfer in NCAA history to sweep the three collegiate Player of the Year awards and Freshman of the Year in the same season. He also led Auburn to its first national championship title.

He can add a made cut in his PGA TOUR debut to that list.

Koivun birdied two of his final five holes to finish 4-over and inside the cutline through 36 holes at the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday. With the made cut, Koivun earned his 15th point in PGA TOUR University’s Accelerated Program. He is five points from reaching the 20-point threshold and earning a TOUR member. He would join Gordon Sargent as the only golfer to hit the threshold.

“I think today is probably the hardest golf conditions and course I ever played," Koivun said. "I'm pretty happy with how I played. It means so much to come out here with that sponsor's exemption and hopefully make the cut and play this weekend.”

Koivun earned a spot in the Memorial by winning the Jack Nicklaus Award, given by the Golf Coaches Association of America to the player of the year. Koivun also won the Ben Hogan Award, Haskins Award and Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award. He’s the first golfer to win all four in a single season.

Koivun won twice in his freshman season, including the SEC Championship. He finished in the top 10 in 12 of his 13 stroke-play starts and had the lowest adjusted scoring average (67.3) in Division I. He earned the clinching point in Auburn’s semifinal match in the NCAA Championship, which went to extra holes. Then he earned Auburn’s first point in the national championship against Florida State.

Koivun shot 4-over 76 on Friday after opening with a round of even-par 72. It was needed breathing room during a difficult second round with strong wind gusts and firming greens. Koivun was 5-over through 10 holes after making a double on the opening hole of the back nine, but the teenager found something with his swing on 11th hole. He made three straight pars before holing back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 to play himself back inside the cutline.

“In the back of my mind I'm like, you got a lot of birdie holes coming up and it could move to 5, so as long as you get through 10 or 11 and 12, they were playing straight in the wind and playing really hard, I had some good opportunities coming in, just needed to play smart coming through.”

He holed a 14-foot birdie on the 14th, found the green in two on the par-5 15th, and made a comfortable two-putt birdie. Koivun nearly grabbed another on the 18th but ran his mid-range birdie putt 5 feet by the hole. He missed the comebacker for a closing bogey, but that didn’t dampen his mood.

“It’s awesome,” Koivun said of his made cut.

Koivun’s quest for 20 PGA TOUR University Accelerated points now looks like a matter of 'when' not 'if'. Koivun has more than two years to earn five points after earning 15 in his freshman season. He is likely guaranteed to earn two more this summer. Currently No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Koivun will jump to No. 2 and earn another point once Christo Lamprecht makes his first professional start. Koivun will earn another point when he competes in the Palmer Cup in July.

Another point is still up for grabs this weekend. Koivun could earn his 16th point with a top-10 finish. He was tied for 45th when he walked off Muirfield Village on Friday afternoon.

“Every point is so valuable now, trying to make that push to get to 20,” Koivun said. “Hopefully I can get a couple more starts and kind of earn that TOUR card … but I'm looking forward to what the future has.”

The future is very bright.

Anohni and the Johnsons Set First North American Tour Dates in Years

For the first time in nearly a decade, Anohni will embark on a North American tour, this time backed by her group, the Johnsons. Last year, Anohni and the Johnsons released one of the most arresting albums of the year, My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross , which contained the single “Why Am I Alive Now?” — whose music video was directed by Hunter Schafer . Rolling Stone dubbed the LP one of the 20 best albums of 2023 . The tour dates mark Anohni’s first tour with the Johnsons since 2010.

“I am presenting a series of concerts in Mexico, the U.S., and Canada this fall,” Anohni said in a statement. “It is my first time touring since 2016, and first time with a band in 14 years. I feel like I want to sing for people, to affirm that these times are unprecedented, and to hold and express a sense of what’s really happening.”

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. local time on June 14.

Swift will head to Edinburgh, Scotland to perform at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield stadium on June 7-9 , and fans couldn’t be more excited.

Where to buy the cheapest Taylor Swift concert tickets

Throughout the “Eras Tour,” the cheapest last-minute tickets for Swift’s 2024 concerts have been on StubHub and Vivid Seats .

As of now, the cheapest ticket for Swift’s June 7 “Eras Tour” concert in Edinburgh is $345 on Vivid Seats , with tickets being listed as high as $6,784.

For her June 8 show, the cheapest ticket at the time of publication is $263 on Vivid Seats , with other tickets being listed as high as $7,298.

Finally, for Swift’s June 9 show, the cheapest ticket we could find is $328 on Vivid Seats , before fees. Other tickets were listed as high as $4,242.

After conquering the charts with “Espresso,” Sabrina Carpenter is ready to share her sixth full-length album , “Short n’ Sweet.” The LP is set for an Aug. 23 debut.

Carpenter shared the news on her social media along with the sultry sweet album artwork that has her front and center with a ruby red kiss mark on her shoulder. In the caption, Carpenter wrote, “I am so excited to announce my brand new album ‘Short n’ Sweet’ coming in August. This project is quite special to me and I hope it’ll be something special to you too. I also have a surprise coming for you on Thursday night so keep an eye out.”

Adding fuel to her fire, Carpenter also appeared as a guest on “Saturday Night Live,” and took over the mainstage at California’s Coachella festival. That weekend, she performed “Espresso” live for the first time, just days after the single premiered.

Carpenter released her fifth studio album “Emails I Can’t Send” last year, and it became her highest-charting to date. The LP included a hot single “Nonsense,” which has quickly become a fan favorite. She followed the 2022 release with a deluxe edition earlier this year, and embarked on an 80-date international headlining tour to support the project. She was also the opening act on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour , opening for the singer in South America and Australia.

Carpenter started her career in entertainment as the star of the  2014-17 Disney Channel comedy “Girl Meets World .” She simultaneously was working on music, first under the Disney-owned Hollywood Records, and now under Island Records.
