TOUR Championship

August 29–September 01, 2024 at East Lake Golf Club

The Tour Championship Explainer

The Tour Championship is a unique thirty-runner event on the PGA Tour whereby the current standings in the FedEx Cup handicap the leaderboard from the starts as below:

  • 10-under par : Scottie Scheffler
  • 8-under par : Xander Schauffele
  • 7-under par : Hideki Matsuyama
  • 6-under par : Keegan Bradley
  • 5-under par : Ludvig Aberg
  • 4-under par : Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Sam Burns, Patrick Cantlay.
  • The rest : 11-15. 3-under par, 16-20. 2-under par, 21-25. 1-under par, 26-30. Even par

Be Careful With Your Bets!

This week’s different format means bettors need to be careful to place their wagers in the correct bet slip.

The two markets will be:

  • To win the Tour Championship : the market is settled on the Tour Championship result
  • The Tour Championship without starting strokes : the traditional 72-hole best score

Once you become comfortable with the format and markets, it leads to two different sets of betting dynamics.

The East Lake Golf Course is a testing track where course specialists have been known to excel. A Donald Ross design that stands the test of time and at 7346 yards for the par 70 it is a lengthier test than many of his other tracks. Indeed, the course is very much a second-shot track where those with strong long iron play can excel . The greens are Bermuda grass and require clever placement of the approach shots in the preferred areas of the greens.

Why Wyndham Has a Live Long Shot Chance?

We believe that Wyndham Clark has a live long shot chance this week. Last year was the first time the Denver golfer made the season-ending Tour Championship on the back of two PGA Tour wins at the U.S. Open and Wells Fargo Championship.

Those wins came on two tough championship tracks. In fact, Quail Hollow, where he won the Wells Fargo, is on the major championship rota, so little wonder he took to East Lake Golf Club like a duck to water. An impressive debut resulted in the thirty-year-old finishing 7th and with that course experience in the locker, we can expect Clark to do better this year as he tees it up in good consistent form.

That form in 2024 saw Clark winning the Pebble Beach Pro-am and being runner-up at the Players Championship early doors. After a mid-season slump in form, recent weeks however have seen Clark back to shooting low scores in a run of high-placed finishes when he has not been able to string four good rounds together.

The Tour Championship market sees Clark start 8th, six strokes back and we suggest a small bet on Wyndham Clark to put four good rounds together.

Golf Pick : Wyndham Clark ML (+4000) at Bet365

Do we stick with Billy Horschel?

Readers and followers will remember that we tipped Billy Horschel for the Wyndham Championship, and he did not disappoint when yielding a profit for a top 10 finish when placing in 7th. He starts this week in one of the lowest positions on the leaderboard but as explained above, we have a more appropriate market for a player who excels at East Lake Golf Club.

Go back a decade and the thirty-seven-year-old from Florida scooped the season-ending FedEx Cup and he has made the finale in six of the last eleven years. On three of those six occasions, Horschel has been in the top 10, in fact, he was the 72-hole runner-up in 2018 .

Yes, starting back in #21 on the FedEx race this week, the chances of him winning the Tour Championship are very low, but in the 72-hole market without starting strokes, he has a very strong profile to consider.

At Bet365, utilize their markets without starting strokes at this week’s Tour Championship to back Billy Horschel to win it and finish in the top 10.

Golf Pick : Billy Horschel to Win (+3000) at Bet365

Tour Championship 2024 odds, starting strokes and picks to win

The grand finale of the 2024 PGA Tour season has arrived as the top 30 players in the season-long points race have made their way to Atlanta for the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler holds the top spot in the FedEx Cup Standings, meaning he'll begin his first round at 10 under, two shots ahead of Xander Schauffele (No. 2 in the FEC). Scheffler, who tied for 33rd in the 50-man field at last week's BMW Championship, is +110 to win.

Defending FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland is 17th in the points standings, meaning he'll begin the event at 2 under, eight shots back of Scheffler.

This week's winner will take home $25 million of the $100 million FedEx Cup bonus pool.

Starting strokes, leaderboard

Betting odds, picks to win, rory mcilroy (16/1).

The only three-time FedEx Cup champion will begin the week six shots back of Scheffler, but don't let that get to you. When he won here in 2022, he started his week with a triple bogey on the first hole but came all the way back to claim the title.

Coming off a T-11 performance at the BMW Championship, McIlroy provides decent value at this number.

Ludvig Aberg (20/1)

The Tour Championship is one of the weirdest events on the schedule to bet thanks to the staggered start. The key is finding value, and Ludvig Aberg at 20/1 feels like a great number.

The Swede was one of the runner-ups to Keegan Bradley at Castle Pines and his game should fit East Lake nicely, especially his prowess off the tee.

Patrick Cantlay (35/1)

The 2021 FedEx Cup champion will start the week at 4 under, six shots back of Scheffler.

Cantlay tied for 13th at the BMW Championship a week after tying for 12th at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Sam Burns (40/1)

Burns used a 7-under final round at the BMW Championship to finish in a tie for second. He's one of those players you roll with when he starts to get hot.

I expect Burns to make a lot of putts on the Bermuda greens this week, and he'll need them starting at 4 under, six back.

  • The 2024 PGA season concludes this weekend in Atlanta with the Tour Championship.
  • The top 30 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings will battle it out at East Lake Golf Club for the first-place prize of $25,000,000.
  • Read below to learn more about the Tour Championship and check out our favorite picks for the tournament.

The FedEx Cup will be awarded this weekend in Atlanta, as the top 30 PGA golfers from the 2024 season descend on East Lake Golf Club. Scottie Scheffler is, understandably, a big favorite to lift the Cup this year, but he struggled last week at the BMW Championship. Can he hold off Xander Schauffele, Hideki Matsuyama and others? Tune in to the Golf Channel, NBC and Peacock Thursday-Sunday to see who wins a cool $25 million.

Tour Championship and FedEx Cup: How It Works

This week’s tournament is unique in the way it is set up. First, only 30 golfers will compete. Only the 30 players with the highest FedEx Cup points totals will be in attendance.

Second, Scottie Scheffler will start at 10-under par. Yes, you read that right. Since Scheffler is the current points leader, he’ll parlay that into a -10 starting score this week.

The other top golfers will get a head start on this week’s scoring, too. Here’s a look at how the advantages play out:

  • Scottie Scheffler: 10 under
  • Xander Schauffele: 8 under
  • Hideki Matsuyama: 7 under
  • Keegan Bradley: 6 under
  • Ludvig Åberg: 5 under
  • Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Sam Burns, Patrick Cantlay: 4 under
  • Sungjae Im, Sahith Theegala, Shane Lowry, Adam Scott, Tony Finau: 3 under
  • Byeong Hun An, Viktor Hovland, Russell Henley, Akshay Bhatia, Robert MacIntyre: 2 under
  • Billy Horschel, Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Matthieu Pavon, Taylor Pendrith: 1 under
  • Chris Kirk, Tom Hoge, Aaron Rai, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Justin Thomas: Even

Scheffler is hard enough to beat even when he starts with the same score as the other golfers. Give him a 2-stroke lead over Schauffele (and an even bigger lead over the rest of the field) and watch out!

With those stroke advantages built in, this weekend’s tournament simply becomes about winning. Lowest score takes home the $25 million first-place prize, but there are plenty of other big paydays coming to all the players who earned a spot in Atlanta.

Tour Championship Picks

  • Scottie Scheffler to win (+115)
  • Keegan Bradley top 5 (+200)

They’re not the best odds, but if we’re handing Scheffler a 2-stroke lead over Schauffele and an even bigger advantage over everyone else in the field, I like him to win. He rises to the occasion on the biggest stages with the most at stake — the Olympics, The Masters, the Players Championship, etc.

With $25 million on the line, the pressure might get to some of the other guys. But Scheffler keeps his cool even in the most stressful moments. I’ll snag the +115 odds on Scheffler to win over at bet365 with a smile on my face.

Meanwhile, Keegan Bradley sits at No. 4 on the leaderboard entering this week’s championship. He came into the BMW Championship having barely qualified, as he had the 50th-most points for the 50-player tournament. But then … he went out and won!

Now he’s all the way up to No. 4. I think he’ll be able to maintain a top-5 position this weekend. And at +200 odds to do so, he’s a good value.

Tour Championship Longshot Pick

  • Ludvig Åberg to win (+1800)

If Scheffler doesn’t win (which is a big if), who is in the best position to steal the FedEx Cup crown? Look no further than Ludvig Åberg, who finished at -11 last week. That was only a shot off of Bradley’s winning score.

He’ll need to overcome a 5-stroke advantage from Scheffler, but hey, he was 12 strokes better than Scheffler at the BMW Championship last week. Xander Schauffele is another guy who you could put some money on to win, as he has less distance to cover in catching Scheffler, starting only 2 strokes back. But his odds are a meager +250 to win, meaning he’s not a great value.

I’ll be placing a small wager on Åberg to play at an elite level for a second week in a row. If Scheffler doesn’t win, I think the young golfer from Sweden is a solid pick to win his first-ever FedEx Cup. Tune in to NBC and Peacock this weekend for the final PGA action of the season!

Tour Championship betting guide: 6 picks our gambling expert loves this week

  • Follow on Twitter

Our expert likes Xander Schauffele's chances this week.

Getty Images

Welcome to our weekly PGA Tour gambling-tips column, featuring picks from GOLF.com’s expert prognosticator Brady Kannon. A seasoned golf bettor and commentator, Kannon is a regular guest on SportsGrid, a syndicated audio network devoted to sports and sport betting. You can follow on Twitter at  @LasVegasGolfer , and you can read his picks below for the Tour Championship, which gets underway Thursday in Atlanta, Ga. Along with Kannon’s recommended plays, you’ll also see data from  Chirp Golf, a mobile app that features both Free-To-Play and Daily Fantasy golf contests  where you can win cash and prizes with each round and tournament.

If winning the FedEx Cup is indicative of who the PGA Tour season-long champion is, then this tournament ought to be a two-person field featuring the two best players in the world: Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele . It’s hard to swallow Keegan Bradley somehow catching them and winning this week when he’s had one win on the season and prior to last week, hadn’t finished in the top 20 in three months.

Yes, the system is flawed, and I believe everyone is well aware of this. The tough part is fixing it and I’m not here to grandstand about how to do it, because I don’t have an answer either. I love the first two weeks of the FedEx Cup playoffs. The drama, the jockeying for position, trying to sneak inside the top 50 and eventually, the top 30. I thought last week’s golf course, at elevation, provided some wonderful, new, twists and turns. And East Lake is great — now a newly-renovated, beast of a par-71 — but the drama has been sucked out of what is supposed to be the grand finale. The Tour Championship is anticlimactic to say the least. Of the 30 players in the field, I believe only the top-10 in starting strokes have a chance.

Speaking of starting strokes, they are awarded according to where one sits in the FedEx Cup points standings coming into this week. Scheffler is No. 1 and begins the tournament at 10-under par on Thursday. Schauffele is second and starts at 8-under. Matsuyama is third and begins at 7-under. This pattern continues on down the board. The final five players in the field, Nos. 26-30, start their week at Even par, 10 shots off the lead, basically playing only for pride and to capture as much cash as they can. This tournament can be very entertaining for just a handful of players at the top. It loses quite a bit of luster after that and I don’t feel it is very receptive to betting either.

Andrew Green was brought in to bring some of the original Donald Ross characteristics back into play at East Lake Golf Club. He has reshaped greens, bunkers, and fairways. He has added and repositioned bunkers. He has changed some of the run-off areas around the greens – and he’s changed the turf on both the fairways and greens to different strains of Zoysia grass and Bermuda grass, respectively. Over 100 yards was added to the golf course and it will now play as a par 71, measuring just under 7,500 yards.

Adam Scott fist pumps after making putt at 2024 BMW Championship.

2024 Tour Championship odds: BMW runner-up is our long shot

Many of the approach shots at East Lake will come from 200-yards or more. Each of the four par-3 holes are longer than 200 yards. The majority of the 11 par-4s fall pretty closely into the 400-450 yard window. Scrambling is key. Driving Accuracy is probably more important than Driving Distance. The gnarly Bermuda grass rough is to be avoided both around the greens and off the fairways. Avoiding bogeys, I believe, is more important than making birdies and of course, approach play and hitting greens in regulation will go a long way toward that silver cup and the $25 million that comes along with it.

I believe the list of correlated courses is somewhat extensive this week. TPC Potomac and TPC River Highlands make a lot of sense to me. Sedgefield is another Ross design that has crossover I believe. Royal Troon, home to the recent Open Championship, has similarities. Muirfield Village (the Memorial) is another, with its emphasis on second shots, driving accuracy, and scrambling. TPC Southwind certainly has some differences but does have the same combination of Zoysia grass fairways and Bermuda grass greens. And finally, Innisbrook, the Copperhead Course where they play the Valspar Championship.

All of that being said, I’m right back to where I began. I believe this is simply a two-person race.

Brady’s best bets at East Lake

Before we get too deep here, there are markets out there in which one can bet who will have the lowest 72-hole score (like a traditional golf tournament), meaning without the starting strokes. Outside of the “Big Two,” I feel like Aaron Rai has a shot in this market at around 50-1. Hideki Matsuyama makes some sense at around 18-1 but you have to wonder about his health after withdrawing from the BMW Championship last week. Former FedEx Cup champs, Viktor Hovland (15-1), and Billy Horschel (35-1) are excellent choices, I believe. And finally, for a long bomb, Christiaan Bezuidenhout would be my choice for a flyer at around 70-1.

However, I’m playing the with the strokes market and have been saying for a month now that I believe Xander Schauffele (+225) is the best bet to win the FedEx Cup. He has been the best horse for this course for several years. He won here in 2017 and has finished runner-up three times. He was again the low 72-hole scorer in 2020 and in 2023. In seven trips to East Lake, he’s never finished worse than seventh.

He’s won at TPC River Highlands and Royal Troon. He’s finished top-15 at the Memorial three times and took eighth there earlier this season. Schauffele is about dead-even with Scheffler in the stats this week. They are pretty much 1-2 or 2-1 however you look at it. But he has been the better player at this golf course and he comes at twice the price.

I believe Scheffler will be voted Player of the Year on the PGA Tour and he definitely deserves it, but I’m betting on Schauffele adding one more notch in his belt at East Lake this week.

Tour Championship Picks, Odds & Favorites: Value Comes Without Starting Strokes

Last Updated: August 24, 2023 9:31 AM EDT • 4 min 58 sec read. Twitter link Google News Link

For the second year in a row, Scottie Scheffler is the betting favorite for the Tour Championship by the odds from our best golf betting sites  as we make our top picks. He'll hope for a better result than his co-runner-up finish in 2022.

A T-2 finish in the BMW Championship propelled World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler to first in the season-long FedEx Cup standings , thus making him the betting favorite by the odds to win the 2023 Tour Championship. Scheffler will begin the Tour Championship at 10-under par and with a two-stroke lead over Viktor Hovland, who won the BMW Championship at minus-17 with the help of a final-round course record of 61.

Scheffler won twice this PGA Tour season but not since The Players Championship in mid-March. Still, there's little argument he has been the best player in golf this year and remains first in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Heading into the Tour Championship, he has taken over from Jon Rahm as the betting favorite by the FedEx Cup odds .

Here are our best Tour Championship picks for East Lake Golf Club near Atlanta, GA (odds via our  best sports betting apps ).

Tour Championship picks

Scottie scheffler to lead after first round (-150 via betmgm , with starting strokes).

One of the best aspects of golf betting is the wide availability of plus-money odds due to the size of the fields and the volatility of the sport. However, we need to adjust with a condensed 30-man field. So let's pounce on this mispriced -150 offering from BetMGM for Scheffler to hold the 18-hole lead.

Surprisingly, none of our  best sportsbooks  are offering a low 18-hole score market that would negate Scheffler's two-stroke advantage on Thursday morning. DraftKings , Caesars , and bet365  are posting Scheffler's odds at -175, with FanDuel offering the market low of -195. This -150 price is way out of line and gives bettors an excellent profit opportunity.

Scheffler began the 2022 Tour Championship with a two-stroke lead and was one back of the opening 18-hole pace that Joaquin Niemann and Matt Fitzpatrick set at East Lake Golf Club. He also holds nearly a full-stroke advantage in average PGA Tour Round 1 scoring in 2023.

What we're hoping for with this pick is that Scheffler's woeful putter won't cost him two-plus strokes on Day 1 of the Tour Championship. When the greens of East Lake are playing at the softest and easiest form possible, we'll be able to rely on the field-best approach game and the ball-striking of the No. 1 player in the world.

Bonus bets will expire in 7 days. One new customer offer only. Additional terms and conditions apply.

Tom Kim to win without starting strokes (+4000 via DraftKings)

Get this market-best price from DraftKings quickly. FanDuel and BetMGM are the only other two of our  best sports betting sites  offering this low 72-hole score market as of Tuesday morning and they have Kim's odds at +2900 and +2800, respectively. That's much closer to in line with where I think Kim should be priced this week.

The two-time PGA Tour champ struggled for much of 2023 while battling various injuries. He has since racked up four top-10 finishes in his last seven events, including the U.S. Open, Genesis Scottish Open, British Open, and last week's BMW Championship, and begins the Tour Championship eight strokes back of Scheffler while 16th in the FedEx Cup standings. That play in strong fields is what we want to target in the 30-man Tour Championship.

While Kim's making his first appearance at East Lake Golf Club, he's an excellent course fit. The 21-year-old star ranked third in the 50-man field last week in driving accuracy and averaged 0.92 strokes gained: putting per round. He also ranks well in this field in birdie-or-better percentage from this week's key distance of 125-150 yards, and he's among the field leaders in SG: approach across his last 24 measured rounds.

Terms and conditions apply.

Rush out to get this +4000 ticket as I expect DraftKings to lower its odds closer to those offered by FanDuel and BetMGM by Thursday morning.

Tour Championship field notes

Tyrrell Hatton, Jordan Spieth, and Sepp Straka crept into the 30-man field for the Tour Championship with respective finishes of T-34, T-34, and T-37 in the BMW Championship. They're three of the five golfers—with Sam Burns and Emiliano Grillo—who'll begin the Tour Championship at even par.

Scheffler will start Thursday's first round from the pole position at minus-10 with a two-stroke lead over Hovland (minus-8). Reigning FedEx Cup champ Rory McIlroy will begin his defense at 7-under par after beginning six strokes back of Scheffler at minus-4 last year.

Rahm opens the final event of the season at minus-6 and Lucas Glover begins at 5-under. Max Homa, Patrick Cantlay, Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, and Matt Fitzpatrick start at 4-under. Tommy Fleetwood, Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, and Xander Schauffele open at minus-3. Tom Kim, Sungjae Im, Tony Finau, Corey Conners, and Si Woo Kim begin their week at minus-2. Taylor Moore, Nick Taylor, Adam Schenk, Collin Morikawa, and Jason Day are nine strokes back of Scheffler at minus-1.

Justin Thomas and Hideki Matsuyama headline the notable absences from the Tour Championship field after failing to qualify for the top 30 in the season-long points race.

East Lake Golf Club course info

  • Par:  70
  • Length:  7,346 yards
  • Greens:  Bermuda
  • Architect:  Tom Bendelow, Donald Ross, Rees Jones

East Lake Golf Club demands accuracy off the tee. Bunkers, trees, and water pose hazards throughout the course. Still, roughly half the holes play below par on average, including six par 4s.

This venue has hosted the Tour Championship each year since 2004. The winning score, including starting strokes, each of the past three years was minus-21. Since the inception of the starting strokes format in 2019, Dustin Johnson (2020) and Patrick Cantlay (2021) opened as the leader at minus-10. McIlroy's two victories in this format in 2019 and 2022 started at minus-5 and minus-4, respectively.

Tour Championship tournament info

  • Where: East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta, GA
  • When: Thursday, Aug. 24 - Sunday, Aug. 27
  • 2022 champion: Rory McIlroy (21 under)

The winner of the Tour Championship (with starting strokes) will earn a bonus of $18 million and a five-year PGA Tour exemption.

The PLAYERS Championship Live Odds: Follow the Action At TPC Sawgrass

With a huge $20 million purse on the line, a loaded field has teed it up for the always-exciting PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass. Check out the live odds to win The PLAYERS Championship below as the event unfolds.

Jared Hochman - Content Manager at Covers.com

Golfers are starting to fine-tune their games with the 2022 Masters about a month away, but next up on the PGA betting slate is the unofficial fifth major of the year — The PLAYERS Championship.

OWGR No. 1 Jon Rahm entered the week as the pre-tournament betting favorite, but he's got lots of company at the top of the board.

With the event officially underway, here are the live PGA Tour odds to win the 2022 PLAYERS Championship, teeing off from March 10-13 at TPC Sawgrass' Players Stadium Course.

If you're signing up for a new sportsbook for The PLAYERS Championship, here are two of the best bonuses available:

USA: Hideki Matsuyama, Jon Rahm, or Collin Morikawa to win The PLAYERS Championship  BOOSTED to +500  (was+450) at DraftKings!.  Claim Now

Canada: Jon Rahm to finish as the Top European at The PLAYERS Championship boosted to +500 at Betway!  Claim Now

The PLAYERS Championship 2022 pre-tournament favorites

Jon rahm (+1,100).

Rahm, the No. 1-ranked player in the world and current betting favorite to win The Masters, is atop the PLAYERS Championship odds board with opening lines posted. The Spaniard has entered six events in 2022, posting two Top-3 finishes and three Top-10s. He hasn't finished worse than 21st this year but remains without a victory and is coming off a T17 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Justin Thomas (+1,400)

Just behind Rahm on the odds board is a three-way tie for second betting favorite, headlined by defending champion Justin Thomas. The American, who sits seventh in the Official World Golf Rankings, has been red-hot with five Top-8 finishes in his last six events (dating back to November) and he's also already been confirmed to start The PLAYERS Championship in a feature group with the other two golfers tied with him at +1,400.

Collin Morikawa (+1,400)

Morikawa's meteoric rise in 2021 has continued this year, as he currently sits No. 2 in the OWGR and has a Top-7 finish in all five events entered this season, most recently a T2 at the Genesis Invitational. Morikawa has done well at high-profile tournaments lately, finishing fourth in last year's U.S. Open then winning the British Open, and despite posting just a T41 at last year's PLAYERS Championship, he ended on a high note with a 6-Under 66 final round.

Rory McIlroy (+1,400)

McIlroy is no stranger to TPC Sawgrass, winning The PLAYERS Championship in 2019, but he missed the cut two of the last three times he's entered (the event was canceled in 2020) and his 2019 victory was his only finish inside the Top-13 since 2015. The fifth-ranked golfer in the world posted a T10 at the Genesis Invitational last February and started off well at Bay Hill, but crumbled over the weekend with consecutive +4 rounds to finish T13.

The rest of the field

As mentioned above, this is a loaded field for the biggest non-major event of the year, so it's no surprise to see some big names — such as World No. 3 Patrick Cantlay, big bomber Bryson DeChambeau, and former world No. 1 Dustin Johnson — all sitting at 20/1 or higher. But there are a couple of intriguing names to keep an eye on at interestingly high values.

The PLAYERS Championship 2022 notable sleepers

Daniel berger (+3,000).

The 28-year-old Berger has two Top 5s in four events in 2022, most recently a fourth-place result at the Honda Classic two weeks ago. After a rough opening round at TPC Sawgrass last year, Berger rallied back to finish ninth (-8) and coupled with a T7 at the U.S. Open, T8 at the British Open, and T11 at the TOUR Championship, he's proven himself to be a player that elevates his game in the biggest events.

Webb Simpson (+4,000)

We haven't seen much lately from Simpson, who's played just one event since the beginning of December (a T61 at the Sony Open in January) due to nagging injuries. But he finished 2019 at No. 11 in the world and ended 2020 as the world's sixth-ranked player, so if he can get healthy he has the talent to deliver on 40/1 odds this weekend at TPC Sawgrass... where he also won this event in 2018.

The PLAYERS Championship Odds FAQs

Scottie Scheffler is a +550 betting favorite to win THE PLAYERS Championship in 2024, with Rory McIlroy second in line at +1,200.

Scottie Scheffler won the 2023 PLAYERS Championship with 10/1 odds and is on the board at +550 to defend his title at TPC Sawgrass this week.

THE PLAYERS Championship is held annually at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.

The 2024 PLAYERS Championship has a purse of $25 million, with $4.5 million going to the winner. It's the best purse of the PGA Tour season, including majors.

2023 Players Championship picks, odds: Expert predictions, favorites to win from betting field at TPC Sawgrass

Who will win the players our experts dive into all the twists and turns as the pga tour continues its hot start.

graphic-playerspickshov.png

With the 2023 Players Championship fast approaching, the key question everyone's asking is the same across the golf world: Who are you picking to win at TPC Sawgrass coming off the PGA Tour's hottest stretch in quite some time? With a tremendous field featuring 44 of the top 50 golfers in the world, we are in for an epic ride beginning with Thursday's first round.

No matter how you want to categorize The Players, it's a big-time event. Just look at the aforementioned field. Players storylines are plentiful , and the star power is no joke. Justin Thomas will be looking for his second win in the last three events, while world No. 1 Jon Rahm is looking to get right after a tough outing at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are attempting to continue their hot play, while Viktor Hovland seeks to break through with a significant victory on a big-time stage.

Plus, with the 2023 Masters fast approaching, the entire field is either seeking momentum ahead of the year's first major or an opportunity to play their way into golf's most prestigious tournament.

So what is going to happen this week in Florida? Let's take a look at a full set of predictions and picks from our CBS Sports experts. Check out a full set of 2023 Players Championship odds via Caesars Sportsbook.

2023 Players Championship expert picks, predictions

Kyle Porter, senior golf writer

Winner -- Scottie Scheffler (10-1): I'm not sure we have appreciated Scheffler's current tear. He has been  by far  the best ball-striker in the world so far in 2023 and more accurate off the tee than his footwork would suggest. That accuracy comes in handy this week as he makes amends for his late bogey at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and grabs the second monstrous victory of his already-great season.

Sleeper -- Keith Mitchell (55-1): Mitchell is driving the hell out of the ball and played great at Riviera in February. It will depend whether his iron play is up for the challenge, but he's a fun bet at 55-1. If you can contend at Riv, you can definitely do so at TPC Sawgrass. If you want to dive even deeper, Jhonattan Vegas at 180-1 should get a look. He's been a great ball-striker this year and finished T3 here in 2019.

Top 10 lock -- Viktor Hovland: I love the way Hovland is playing. He finished T9 here a year ago and said he recently solved some of his ball-striking woes, which netted him a top-10 finish at Bay Hill. I don't believe he's going to win this week, but I do envision him playing well for the second straight year and being in the mix on Sunday.

Star who definitely won't win -- Jon Rahm: Let's get crazy and say Rahm. I'm partly playing the percentages -- is Rahm really going to win four times in the first 70 days of the year?! -- but I do think his wayward driver catches up with him a bit at TPC Sawgrass and he cedes his throne going into the Masters to last year's green jacket winner.

Surprise prediction -- This will be an all-time Players: Why would that be a surprise? Well, we're coming off a Kurt Kitayama win week, which (no offense to Kitayama) was not the most compelling ending to a large audience. Also, The Players is not necessarily known -- at least in recent memory -- for its star-studded leaderboards. I think that changes this year. The board will look like the OWGR top 10 come Saturday afternoon and only get better from there. So many big names are playing such great golf right now and everything this year, it seems, has led us to this.

Lowest round: 65 (-7) Winning score: 275 (-13) Winner's Sunday score: 68 (-4)

Patrick McDonald, golf writer

Winner -- Viktor Hovland (25-1):  The young Norwegian sunk his chances to claim the API with a water ball on the par-5 16th but looks keen on entering the winner's circle soon. Hovland finished T9 at this championship a season ago gaining roughly 14 strokes through his ball striking, and a similar output isn't out of the realm of possibilities. The short-game concerns are real, but his ball-striking metrics are too tantalizing to pass up.

Sleeper -- Keith Mitchell (55-1):  Over the last three months, Mitchell ranks first in strokes gained off the tee and eighth in strokes gained tee to green. He is slowly commanding respect in the betting markets, but this still feels too cheap for a top-25 talent. He sat one stroke off the lead after 18 in last year's championship before ultimately finishing T13 and surprisingly does some of his best work on shorter golf courses like TPC Sawgrass.

Top 10 lock -- Will Zalatoris:  The signs of a Zalatoris breakthrough are there. He has driven the ball brilliantly in his last two outings, and soon enough, the iron play will come around. In his two appearances at TPC Sawgrass, he has nabbed a solo 21st and a T26 finish. If he putts well, he could win.

Star who definitely won't win -- Jon Rahm:  He will go down as one of the best drivers of the golf ball to ever play, but right now, that's not the case. The trouble at Bay Hill exposed his relative struggles with the big stick, and the test won't get much easier this week at TPC Sawgrass. The world No. 1 has rode a red-hot putter during his historical stretch and conventional wisdom suggests it should begin cooling soon.

Surprise prediction -- Five of the top 15 players in the OWGR miss the cut:  Weird things happen at TPC Sawgrass. The volatility is real and we have no choice but to embrace it. With this in mind, don't be shocked if a number of big names miss out on the weekend. Tony Finau, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth and Collin Morikawa have less-than-stellar histories here, and world No. 15 Sam Burns looks more like the world No. 100 at the moment. Between these six and one or two more surprises, there's a scenario where five of the best players in the world are sent packing early.

Lowest round:  64 (-8) Winning score:  273 (-15) Winner's Sunday score:  68 (-4)

Adam Silverstein, managing editor

Winner -- Max Homa (16-1): It's been quite a run for Homa since the end of 2022 with four top-five finishes, including a victory and solo second, in his last six events. He finished T13 at TPC Sawgrass last year with his score decreasing over each of the final three rounds (66 on Sunday). Homa has plenty of momentum at his back entering this Players, and he's been one of the hottest golfers in the sport ranking third in total strokes gained and first in strokes gained approach over the last three months. His putting has been nearly as strong as his iron play, and given the way some of the game's (bigger) stars faltered last week, perhaps he breaks through with the biggest victory of his career to date.

Sleeper -- Rickie Fowler (55-1):  OK, so, perhaps this is more of a longshot than a sleeper, but Fowler has been playing much better of late. He has four top-11 finishes already this season and ranks both 15th in total strokes gained and sixth in strokes gained approach since December. Fowler has also improved his tee-to-green game significantly, and he knows this course having won a playoff here in 2015. At these odds, there's much worse wagers.

Top 10 lock -- Jon Rahm: Sorry, I'm not jumping on the bandwagon of doubting arguably the game's best player because he had an off week. Outside of last week's strange faltering, he went 7-0 in top-10 finishes to start the season with three wins and two other top fives. This is not some foreign course, and TPC Sawgrass rewards experience.

Star who definitely won't win -- Justin Thomas:  Sure, J.T. is the last Players champion still eligible to play the event, but his game is just off right now. His strokes gained numbers are actually solid, but he's finished T20 or worse in six of eight events since the Presidents Cup and didn't show signs of a turnaround last week when his score increased over the final three days of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Maybe Thomas will get everything turned around for major season, but right now, asking him to win another Players is a tall task.

Surprise prediction -- Keegan Bradley makes a run: At 40-1, Bradley could have easily fallen into the sleeper category, but there seems to be a lot of belief in his game this season. Bradley had one of the best ball-striking weeks of anyone at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and has two top-10 finishes in his last four starts. If not for an awful Round 1 at the Genesis Invitational that led to a missed cut, he would be considered one of the hottest players on Tour over the last month. Whether he wins is another question, but look for Bradley to be near the top of the leaderboard on Moving Day.

Lowest round:  65 (-7) Winning score:  274 (-14) Winner's Sunday score:  69 (-3)

Joshua Mullenix, producer

Winner -- Jason Day (25-1):   It's time for the Aussie to return to the winner's circle. He's finally healthy again, and the results back it up. Day already has six top-11 finishes this season, including a current stretch of four straight top 10s. Last week, he finished in a tie for 10th, and it didn't feel like he played that well. The putter gives him such a high floor even when he doesn't have the best of ball striking weeks, and I think he'll regroup and strike it like he was leading up to the API. In the best form since spring of 2019, J-Day gets his second Players Championship.

Sleeper -- Keegan Bradley (40-1):  Lean and mean, Keegan is playing some high quality golf right now. He got a win at the Zozo Championship back in October and three more top 20s to his name, including a second at the Farmers Insurance Open and a T10 last week. He's coming off his best ball-striking week of the season, and the putter was much better than it was in his missed cut at the Genesis Invitational. He finished fifth here last year and has recorded four top-29 finishes in his last four starts at Sawgrass.

Top 10 lock -- Viktor Hovland:  Last year, Hovland contended at the API and parlayed it into a top 10 at The Players. It should've been a better finish as he stumbled down the stretch. The struggles with his swing are well documented by the man himself, but the ball striking categories suggest he's getting more and more comfortable. He finished second in strokes gained off the tee and 4th in strokes gained approach at Bay Hill. If the trajectory continues upwards, he should be in the mix on Sunday.

Star who definitely won't win -- Jon Rahm:   I've never seen a player go from seemingly unstoppable to lost in two days the way Rahm did last week. It's all in the issues with the driver. He put on an approach clinic at Riviera, but the driver was sneaky mediocre. Then, he lost strokes off the tee at Bay Hill -- something he hadn't done since last year's Tour Championship -- and finished dead last in strokes gained off the tee among those who made the cut. This is widely considered one of the best drivers of the golf ball in the world, and he completely lost it last week. Sawgrass isn't the best place to try and find it.

Surprise prediction -- Tom Kim nets a top-10 finish:  This despite three finishes outside the top 34 in each of his his last three starts. Kim's major issue is length off the tee. He's so solid everywhere else, and overwhelming length is less of a factor at Sawgrass. The fairways this week are not very wide and avoiding big numbers on the back nine is the name of the game when it comes to contending at The Players. Golfbet recap: Patton Kizzire cruises to first PGA TOUR win in nearly seven years at Procore Championship

Golfbet News

Patton Kizzire has found the winner’s circle on the PGA TOUR for the first time in nearly seven years.

After shooting three consecutive rounds in the 60s, Kizzire shot a 2-under 70 on Sunday at Silverado Resort & Spa in Napa, California, to win the Procore Championship by five shots over David Lipsky. It was Kizzire’s first win on TOUR since winning the Sony Open in Hawaii back in January of 2018.

He began the day in the negative – as an odds-on favorite to win the championship at a price of -110, holding on to a four-shot, overnight lead.

Round-by-round odds for Patton Kizzire to win Procore Championship

  • Pre-tournament: +17500
  • After Round 1 (T2, trailed by 1): +2200
  • After Round 2 (led by 1): +550
  • After Round 3 (led by 4): -110

After two holes the lead was down to three shots and Kizzire’s price had dropped down to -105 to win the golf tournament. Two holes later the lead had been cut in half. Lipsky, seeking his first-ever TOUR win, was at 16-under for the championship, two shots back of Kizzire and a +300 underdog to pull it off.

But it all turned in Kizzire’s direction when the Auburn Tiger drilled a 51-foot chip for eagle on No. 5 and Lipsky settled for par. The lead was back to four and the price was now -500 on the 38-year-old to get his third TOUR win.

It got interesting for a moment when Lipsky got it back to just a two-shot gap with a birdie at the par-3 11th hole while Kizzire made bogey. Headed to the par-5 12th, Kizzire was down to a -400 favorite while Lipsky had shortened to +350. This hint of drama, however, was wiped out quickly when Kizzire bounced back with a birdie at No. 12 and Lipsky settled for a par. We were back to a three-shot margin and Kizzire was back up to a -1000 favorite with six holes left to play.

  • Mike Glasscott: Maverick McNealy (+2000) MC

Patton Kizzire gets up-and-down for birdie at Procore

Being from Alabama, Kizzire has always struck me as a player who fares well, not only down south, but on Bermudagrass greens. His win in Hawaii came on bermudagrass. A triple-digit longshot pre-tournament, Kizzire never made it onto my radar this week in the handicap, especially on the blended Poa Annua/Bentgrass putting surfaces at Silverado.

He’s never been especially successful in the state of California. He did, however, finish runner-up at this tournament in 2016. He did one better on this Sunday, eight years later. Like a fine wine, Kizzire has aged well.

The FedExCup Fall will take the rest of the month off. The Presidents Cup is up next, beginning September 26, and then we resume on TOUR in Jackson, Mississippi, for the Sanderson Farms Championship on Oct. 3. Don’t tell Patton Kizzire, but the Country Club of Jackson does indeed have Bermudagrass greens.
